Angel Mendez, Sammy Ortiz and Isabel Lopez talk about how a program called Young Entrepreneurial Students, also known as Y.E.S., can create new opportunities for disadvantaged and minority youths.

Wrong turn creates a new path for opportunities By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Sammy Ortiz was headed to the annual Dade City Kumquat Festival a couple of years ago, but instead of taking the usual turn onto Meridian Avenue, he wound up on Lock Street. The Wesley Chapel man was astounded. He could not believe the difference between the conditions along Lock Street and the Southern charm of downtown Dade City. Lock Street, roughly a mile away from downtown,“looked like a Third World country,” Ortiz said. The minister felt called to become involved. “I feel like God impressed on my heart that I need to do something for the area that didn’t involve necessarily preaching to them, but giving something to them,” Ortiz said. Soon after, Ortiz rented some space in Dade City, and began walking Lock Street to become acquainted with the residents and their needs.

The pastor said he’d been warned not to walk down Lock Street, that the area was too dangerous. But, he said, he never felt threatened and instead encountered people who were nice. He decided to begin a program that he calls Y.E.S., which stands for Young Entrepreneurial Students. “I felt if we could change the mindset of young people concerning economic distress, then we can really help future generations,” Ortiz said. One group of nine students has completed the program, and a second one is underway. “The first cohort was a guinea pig cohort. It consisted of five weeks,” Ortiz said. “We are now doing them in 15-week increments. “What we want to teach young people is how to start their own business, organization or cause,” he said. Nineteen-year-old Angel Mendez was in the first group. “Y.E.S. gives hope to young people in the community,” said Mendez. The program, he added,“helped to look at where my passions

were and where I wanted to take them.” It also helped him get his hands on some video production equipment and gave him an opportunity to network. Now, he has a video production business he calls WhatEyeSee Productions. It’s a fledgling operation, but he’s excited about what lies ahead. Isabel Lopez, 19, is part of the second cohort. She heard about Y.E.S. from another graduate and was attracted to the opportunity. “I like it. I actually changed my major in college to psychology,” she said, deciding to follow her passion rather than simply choose a more practical career. Osvaldo Limas, another Y.E.S. participant, likes to dream big. He’d like to open a zoo in Dade City, he said, via an email to The Laker/Lutz News. “Now, opening up a zoo in Dade City is a very tall order,” Limas acknowledged. But he is undaunted. “The path is long, but I am determined that I will reach the end,” Limas said. See PATH, page 11A

Holocaust scholar talks theology in Nazi Germany By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

For historians studying the Holocaust, many questions still remain, including how Christian theologians grappled with their beliefs under National Socialism. Dr.Victoria Barnett offered insight to that phenomenon, during a Nov. 9 speaking engagement at Saint Leo University. Barnett is the director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Programs on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust. Her local appearance was timed to observe the anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the “Night of Broken Glass.” On Nov. 9 and Nov. 10, 1938, a series of violent attacks against Jewish temples, businesses, property and individuals were launched in Germany and nearby occupied areas. The episode is considered to be the start of the Holocaust. Barnett’s presentation centered on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a compelling figure who emerged at a young age as an influential Christian thinker, author, and an operative in a covert resistance movement against the Third Reich — including a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler and about 30 other Nazi leaders. After resistance activities were discovered, the Nazis executed the 39-

year-old Bonhoeffer in 1945, just days before the end of World War II. Barnett, though, pushed back on Bonhoeffer’s legacy, suggesting the celebrated theologian actually endured a “slow movement towards certainty” in opposing the Third Reich. More recent historiography yields a varying perspective of the theologian, she said. Regarding Nazi resistance in the early 1930s, Barnett described Bonhoeffer as “sometimes doubtful about what he was doing.” This uncertainly, Barnett explained, was exemplified in 1933 when Bonhoeffer initially refused to perform a funeral procession for his twin sister’s husband, who was Jewish. “One of the interesting things in his personal papers and his letters is how often he talks about how much trouble he has making a decision, how doubtful he is that something’s the right thing to do,” Barnett said. “It’s a very human moment where you see that kind of uncertainty under pressure of not knowing what to do,” she said. Barnett, too, argued there’s little evidence to suggest Bonhoeffer’s involvement in the resistance “was motivated purely out of his concern for the persecution of the Jews.” One of his primary motives, instead, may

have been related to the church — such as converting and baptizing people of Jewish descent. “One of the big questions for historians,” the scholar said,“is understanding how the church treated such people who were baptized very differently from members of the Jewish community or secular Jews. “...The Confessing Church was very often willing to speak out for people who were in the church who were baptized Christians and now affected by the racial laws, but refused to do so when it came to See HOLOCAUST, page 11A

Food and shopping: a great combination By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons

The Lunch Bunch, a women’s luncheon, took place Nov. 7 at Fred’s Market Restaurant in Lakeland. There were 16 women who went to the restaurant, and everyone seemed to have a good time. It seems there was a little mix-up, but the restaurant came through very nicely. The women who attended had a separate room to converse in. The food was delicious, and they had a buffet, plus you were able to order from the menu. The buffet consisted of chicken, salad, dumplings and desserts. This luncheon was arranged by Robbie Lockard, and about eight women went shopping afterward at the Lakeland Mall. Several days later, on Nov. 10, we had Lunch Connoisseurs at Ford’s Garage in Lutz. There was a big crowd of 56 people. This was organized by Shirley and Chuck Carlson. The restaurant was decorated with old cars greeting everyone upon entering the restaurant, with several more trucks/cars inside the restaurant with tires on the walls. The restrooms also had more tires around the sinks and gas pumps for door handles. There was a sign in the restroom that stated the following:“What happened in the garage, stays in the garage.” The menu was varied, and there were more than enough dishes. Shirley and Chuck were the perfect host and hostess as, upon the completion of the meal, they asked everyone how their lunch was. From the restaurant, there was a mall nearby, and people could take their pick and either shop or go home.

Caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients don’t have to go it alone By B.C. Manion

B.C. MANION

Phyllis Bross, a retired attorney, runs a monthly Alzheimer’s Association support group at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library.

For instance, when visiting an elder law attorney, ask about the possibility of your loved one qualifying for Medicaid, in case the family ends up not being able to afford all of the care that’s going to be needed. It’s also important to become aware of long-term care facilities that may become necessary at some point. “Look at facilities. Even if you’ve promised your loved one you won’t put them in a facility, you don’t really know how sick they’re going to get,” Bross said. Sometimes, no matter how much a caregiver wants to keep his or her loved one at home, it becomes impossible. In short, Bross recommends:“Try to get as much information as you can. Try to get as much support as you can. Try to get things rolling.” Beyond needing help with feeding, bathing and other physical needs,Alzheimer’s patients sometimes become difficult to handle. “Their temperament changes very often. They might become abusive,” Bross said. She advises to prepare for “the worst-case scenario.” Bross also recommends a book called, “The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementias, and Memory Loss,” by Nancy L. Mace and Peter V. Rabins. “People in my Alzheimer’s care group call

Practical ways to help caregivers: If you’d like to help a caregiver of someone afflicted by Alzheimer’s disease, here are some ways you can help: • Offer to give them a break by volunteering to watch over the patient, while the caregiver does shopping, goes to a hair appointment or does errands. (This may not be possible based on the patient’s condition or willingness to accept your care. If that won’t work, another option would be to provide a gift of paid-for respite care.) • Bring over dinner or provide gift certificates for meals. • Watch a movie at the caregiver’s house. • Take some nice photographs of the caregiver and their loved one, so the caregiver will have them later. • Provide emotional support, through a poem or a loving letter. • Step in to help in practical ways, such as yard work, house work or other chores.

Memory loss and confusion are the main symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, but those also can be symptoms of other health conditions. A medical diagnosis is necessary to pursue appropriate treatment and to rule out other possible, sometimes reversible, conditions. People with Alzheimer’s may experience these types of symptoms: Cognitive: mental decline, difficulty thinking and understanding, confusion in the evening hours, delusion, disorientation, forgetfulness, making things up, mental confusion, difficulty concentrating, inability to create new memories, inability to do simple math, or inability to recognize common things Behavioral: aggression, agitation, difficulty with self-care, irritability, meaningless repetition of own words, personality changes, restlessness, lack of restraint, or wandering and getting lost Mood: anger, apathy, general discontent, loneliness, or mood swings Psychological: depression, hallucination, or paranoia Other common symptoms: inability to combine muscle movements, jumbled speech, or loss of appetite Source: Google fact sheet

When someone learns that a loved one is afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, it can seem overwhelming. Phyllis Bross, a retired attorney from Land O’ Lakes, understands the feeling. Her mother and aunt were both Alzheimer’s patients, and she now runs the Alzheimer’s Association/Caregiver Support Group that meets monthly at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library, 2818 Collier Parkway. Based on her own experiences, Bross said, generally, when a caregiver learns about the diagnosis, he or she feels lost. “You’re worried about your future finances, and providing medication, and other kinds of support and help for your loved one. “You know you don’t have a medical background, so you’re wondering: Should someone else be taking care of him or her? Or, should I do it because of the familiarity and the love for the person?” Bross said. Because they don’t know what to do, most people begin sorting things out by turning to a support group for help. “I think that’s a great place to start,” said Bross, who, in addition to her legal experience, has an undergraduate degree in social work. There are all kinds of support groups available, offered by the Alzheimer’s Association and other groups, she added. There are definite steps that caregivers can take to help themselves, Bross added. While the loved one is competent, it’s important to ask:“Do you believe you can trust me … to take care of you, to take care of your money/the family money, to take care of your health, to make end-of-life decisions for you?” Bross said. If the answer is yes, the next question would be:“Can we go to an attorney, an elder law attorney and discuss you’re possibly providing me with a durable power of attorney?” Bross said. Taking that action will simplify later decisions that will need to be made, she said. She also suggests organizing a family meeting, so you can find out their level of support and if they can help you make decisions. It’s also important to start asking questions early, Bross said.

Dale purchased most of the cards herself, and has broken her own record this year by writing personal greetings and embellishing a total of 4,625 cards. In addition, woman’s club members also have crafted and delivered a total of 300 holiday favors for Meals on Wheels and the Lutz Senior Center. Mark VanTrees, Support the Troops director, accepts a cart full of cards from Gloria Dale.

PATH, from page 1A Ortiz said the Y.E.S. program consists of weekly sessions. “The curriculum is modular. They learn about their personal strengths, how to develop a team. They learn about personal obstacles and limitations. They learn about their passions and their dreams, and then they begin to identify problems,” he added. They identify what problem they are solving, who their customers are and what solutions they are offering. They must calculate the costs for launching their business and figure out how much funding they need to keep it going, and how they will generate that revenue, Ortiz said. The youths use a curriculum that was developed by Co.Starters — which is a youth version of the curriculum that Pasco Economic Development Council uses for its adult entrepreneurial program, Ortiz said. He credits John Welsh, of the Pasco EDC, for helping him to get Y.E.S. rolling. Unlike the Pasco EDC’s program, Y.E.S. provides its program to minority and underprivileged youth at no charge. Ortiz also has launched a cohort at the Juvenile Detention Center, will be starting one at Cox Elementary School, and is beginning an entrepreneurial club at Saint Leo University and another at Pasco-Hernando State College. “I want to make sure that young people, especially those that are in economically distressed areas, have the same opportunities

that I would call privileged young people would have. “They have some great ideas. “Somebody has to encourage them to pursue things that they may feel a little apprehensive pursuing,” Ortiz said. In some cases, he noted, these students are the first from their families to pursue a college education. Some youths have potential, but lack confidence. He likes to tell them: “You may not do that yet — but you can learn how to do that.” He doesn’t want youths to be held back by their financial circumstances. “They can’t be excluded,” Ortiz said. “I want, if anything, just to make room at the table.” Ortiz wants to extend the opportunities to more disadvantaged youths and has been working to raise funds to support it. At the moment, he and his wife have been the primary financial supporters. “Poverty is cyclical. So, we want to break that,” Ortiz said. “We want success to be cyclical.” When Ortiz thinks back to a couple of years ago, he realizes that none of this might have happened, if he hadn’t driven down Lock Street. “I’m glad that I got lost,” Ortiz said. If you’d like to know more, or would like to help, call Ortiz at (813) 563-5753, or email him at Sammy@youngentrepreneurialstudents.org. Or, you can visit the website, YoungEntrepreneurialStudents.org.

HOLOCAUST, from page 1A the Jewish community itself or the secularized Jews,” she said. Barnett referenced Bonhoeffer’s 1933 essay, “The Church and the Jewish Question,” where he addressed the new problems the church faced under the Nazi dictatorship. Despite the essay’s “brilliant Lutheran deconstruction of why the Nazi state is not a legitimate form of leadership,” it also includes what Barnett defined as “one of the most anti-Jewish paragraphs that you can find in the literature of that era.” Barnett explained:“You have the deicide charge—the so-called Christ-killer charge, you have supersessionism — the argument that the Jews are suffering because they still need to convert. It’s an incredibly offensive paragraph and — in the shadow of the Holocaust — one can’t read it without really cringing and thinking,‘What is that doing in this essay?’” Barnett also argued that Bonhoeffer’s role in the assassination attempt of Hitler in July 1944 has been exaggerated. “The mythology about Bonhoeffer...kind of has him laying the bomb or pulling the trigger or being the one who was going to assassinate Hitler. That’s simply not the case. He’s brought in, and he’s simply one of about 6,000 people, somewhere in this broader network of conspiracy circles,” Barnett said. “His role is central in that he’s related to several figures by family who were very central in the conspiracy, so he knows what’s going on,” she added. New revelations aside, Barnett acknowledged Bonhoeffer as “a person of real decency, real integrity” and “an extraordinary individual who died much too young.” She added: “Life, especially in dictatorships like that, can get complicated, very quickly, and I think realizing that is very important when we study this era.” The tale of Bonhoeffer, meanwhile, leads to the broader issue of the church structure during the Nazi regime. Barnett explained the portrayal of the Confessing Church — a movement within German Protestantism during Nazi Germany that arose in opposition to governmentsponsored efforts to unify all Protestant churches into a single pro-Nazi Protestant Reich Church — is “more complicated than people had initially thought.” While Protestant and Catholic churches in 1945 were the two German institutions

Dr. Victoria Barnett’s presentation centered on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a compelling figure who emerged at a young age as an influential Christian thinker, author, and an operative in a covert resistance movement against the Third Reich.

the allied military trusted in denazification proceedings, Barnett said history shows many in both churches enabled the Nazi regime. Said Barnett:“There were indeed figures both in the Protestant and Catholic churches, like Bonhoeffer, who did stand up briefly, who did oppose National Socialism, who fought back against them, but, there were very, very many people in both churches who went along with it. Some of them became Nazi party members. Some of them actually betrayed colleagues. Some of them defended National Socialism.” She also noted German churches and monasteries employed thousands of forced laborers during the Third Reich, raising additional questions of moral ambiguity, complicity and guilt. The paradox illustrates how Nazism fully pervaded German society by the early 1940s, Barnett said. “You could not get away from what was happening,” Barnett said. “It was so thoroughly permeated in German society that was no way for anyone to step outside of it.” Barnett’s presentation was organized by the university’s Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies (CCJS).

This special league puts the focus on fun By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

ins and losses don’t matter in this softball league. But having fun does. Every fall and spring, Idlewild Baptist Church (IBC) in Lutz hosts a softball league for the special needs community in Tampa Bay. It’s called the IBC Champions Division. And, together it brings children and adults of all ages, with varying physical and mental disabilities. Some players have autism. Others have Down syndrome. It has even accommodated a blind player in the past. “We have them all, and we love them all,” said Louise Faust, one of the league’s volunteers. Faust, along with a handful of others, serve as designated “Field Buddies.” They keep the games moving along and shielding players from any hard-hit balls. The league draws more than two dozen special needs players from Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties. Church membership isn’t required to participate. “It’s not all folks from within our church congregation,” said Deana Troyer, manager of Idlewild’s special needs.“There are people from the community here that may be part of the church or part of no church, but this commonality draws them together. “We all come out and have a blast,” she added. Troyer noted the special group bonds over their relative circumstances. “They look out for each other. They operate like a family,” she said. The six-game fall season ran from Oct. 7 to Nov. 18. Games are played for about an hour on Saturday mornings at Idlewild’s Champions Field, a fenced-in complex made of rubber pavement — from recycled tires — to safely accommodate wheelchairs and walkers, and help prevent injuries from accidental falls. Donations to the church’s foundation helped build the facility in 2011. Unlike other recreation sports, the rules of this league are lenient and accommodating. There are no practices. No one keeps score. Players can opt to hit off a tee or receive pitches from a designated coach or player. Anyone can hit a home run and run the bases if they so choose. And, teams are split in half, based on who shows up each week. “We have our own rules,” Faust said.“It’s just for fun and everybody enjoys it. I enjoy it, too.” Count 52-year-old Kelly West among those who look forward to games each week during the season. West, who has Down syndrome, is accompanied to each game by her mother, Donna West. The pair were among the first arrivals at a recent Nov. 11 contest. “It’s cute and it’s fun, and they really enjoy it. I know my daughter does,” Donna West said. Kelly proved one of the game’s standouts, eking a standup triple out of a groundball. Her energy and enthusiasm never wavered. What does she adore most about the league? “We’re a family,” she said. Another player, 36-year-old Tim Culver, has played in the league for the past four years. “Making friends” keeps him coming back. Christine Hoerner, too, has been in the league for several years. The 30-year-old is known among her peers for her hitting power — slugging her share of home runs. In fact, the field clears to the dugout when she steps to the plate. “I like to hit it over the fence,” she said. Besides its players, Champions Division softball holds significant meaning for its volunteers. Kathy Alvarez has helped as a coach, since the league began more than a decade ago when games were played on regular fields, until the Champions Field was constructed. Alvarez said the program provides an opportunity for special needs players to learn new skills, while getting exercise and having an all-around good time. “They look forward to it and they’ll see me at church and say, ‘Coach, baseball’s coming soon,’ and it might be in June and they’re already looking towards October.” She added some newcomers are initially hesitant to participate, but eventually warm up to the idea once seeing others play. Alvarez explained:“What’s interesting about it is I can get a new kid...and they won’t want to get out of the car, or they’ll sit on the bench and won’t want to play, which is fine. Then the next week, they say,‘Hey, I’ll come up to bat,’ and in a couple weeks they know that they hit the ball, they run the bases. They learn on their own just by watching; it’s an awesome thing to go through.” Henry Morales, another volunteer, likewise has seen the progression of players firsthand, since he began volunteering over six years ago. He supports his niece, Christine Hoerner. Said Morales,“Some of them have never

played any kind of baseball or anything before coming here, so you kind of start them off on the tee ball like a 3-year-old. And when we first started in 2011, a lot of them were doing that. Now, almost all of them are taking pitched balls and hitting them.” The softball program also puts regular life into perspective for David Johnson, another “Field Buddy.” He explained:“We go through our every-

day lives, stressing,‘Man, I’ve got to do this...’ We think we have a big burden on our shoulders, but when you stand behind home plate and you watch them play and laugh and give you high-fives, your problems don’t seem that bad.” He added:“Every time they give me highfives and give me hugs, it just makes my day. There are some things you just can’t forget. It sticks with you; it stays with you.”

In addition to softball, Idlewild Baptist Church offers a comprehensive special needs program. Among the highlights are a fishing program, called Fishing, Faith and Fun, beginning in January. There’s also a Christmas pageant, featuring special needs participants, on Dec. 3. For more information on the programs, visit Idlewild.org/category/special-needs/.

adio-controlled model airplane pilots from throughout Florida had a nearly perfect day to fly their aircraft at the 10th annual Bay City Flyers Meet held at Area 52, eight miles north of Land O’ Lakes.

The meet, on Nov. 18, attracted 48 registered flyers and about 300 spectators.Admission was a $3 donation per carload. The landing fee for pilots was $10. It was a sunny day, with no wind, as the model airplane pilots demonstrated their skills, and showed off their remote-controlled military aircraft and warbirds. Bay City Flyers is a nonprofit radiocontrol flying club that has four events each year. It is chartered by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, the world’s largest sport aviation organization. These pilots are serious about their hobby, which involves an investment of both time and money. Building the models requires painstaking detail work, and the models can cost anywhere from several hundred dollars up to $30,000.

AROUND THE PARKS

Special people, special friends By Judy Pearce

Sweetwater RV Resort

Tom McCormick is a ‘man of many hats’ at Sweetwater RV Resort. Since he and his wife Cinda came here in 2000, he’s been one of the weekly golf coordinators for 10 of those years. He currently represents all ‘sports’ on the executive committee, and has been involved in the committee for 12 years. He enjoys buying and selling golf clubs at garage sales, as well. Being a past educator, he is often sought out for advice and support. He walks 2 miles to 3 miles a day and wears a ‘tilly-like’ hat. Tom loves to decorate the large tree right outside his front door. Even when one of the branches was cut off, he still managed to work around it. At Valentine’s Day, a large heart and arrow appeared; for St. Patricks’ Day, a shamrock; and for Easter/Spring, a tulip. Seasonal flags and lighting also get changed, to add to these special effects for all to enjoy. Betty Keller will turn 80 years old this November. She and her husband, Monty, came to Sweetwater in 1994, when they were looking for a place for themselves and their friends. When they found one, they suggested their friends use it in order to find their own place. They spent their first winter here in 1995. They lived next door to an avid quilter, so Betty Keller and Susie Parish began to quilt together. They started a small club, which has eventually become the very active Twisted Stitchers Club that we still enjoy here today. When I saw Betty at the St. Patrick’s Day Lunch, with her large hat on, it made me think of her as a sweet ‘Betty quilt.’ Betty and Monty moved to a larger unit in 2000, and she enjoyed having her own washing machine. She tried to encourage people to have fun…she shared a story of buying 12 large dresses from a lady, for 25 cents each.

Elfriede Pfister in her Florida home, surrounded by family pictures and handmade crafts.

She got 12 men to dress up in them for a Valentine’s contest, and everyone had a good laugh. This led to involvement in talent shows, where she remained focused on people having fun. Betty was elected president of the Running Water Club from 2004 to 2007, and she and Monty were king and queen of the park at one point. They loved to dance together, and Monty often said he wanted to be on the dance floor when the good Lord wanted him. Ironically enough, after a round of polka at the January 2014 Coronation Dance, Monty passed out and, sadly, did not recover. A defibrillator was purchased in his name the following season and was hung in the

clubhouse. Training was offered so people would have options in the event of another health episode at functions. Betty did not come down in 2015, but she resumed her winter getaway in 2016. She continues to quilt and have fun with her friends here. She says she’s quilted for 50 years and there are many picture albums stored in cabinets by the stage that tell the stories of years gone by. Of particular mention, during Betty’s time as president, are the many tables and chairs used in the clubhouse. Betty says that many fundraisers were held in order to purchase these, and they are still being taken care of and used extensively. Elfriede Pfister is 87 years old and has been coming to Sweetwater for 32 years. She

was born in Germany and came to Canada, with her husband and young daughter, in 1960. She currently lives on a lovely treed lot on a lake in Apsley, Ontario. She has two grown children and five grandchildren, ranging in ages from 25 to 32. Her husband passed in 1991, and “Elfi” has continued to fly down on her own for the winter. She still handwrites Christmas letters, in German, to seven of her remaining 33 classmates in Germany, and she is seen as a very strong woman by many of them. Elfriede was first drawn to Betty because she had a sewing machine set up in the clubhouse. When Elfriede was 18 years old, she worked in a factory environment in Frankfort, doing piecework by sewing pockets on the pants of officers’ uniforms. She describes herself as a crafter, not a quilter, and it was evident by all the handmade items in her Florida home. She used to attend two weekly craft groups and bingo, so she knows people at Settlers Rest as well. She prides herself at making all her husbands shirts in earlier years. Elfi has many special items, but the ones that made her light up the most were two plastic canvas rabbits (male and female), hung up in her bedroom. They are the first things she sees when she wakes up, and it gives her great pleasure to point out their blues eyes, looking at each other. She also has handmade crochet dolls in many colors on each bed in her Florida and Ontario homes. Elfriede says she always helped out whenever she could at Sweetwater events. Of particular mention was the yearly strawberry shortcake event. She said she went out for two hours to pick strawberries, then she proceeded to wash and prepare them once she returned. When Betty lost her husband, Elfriede tried to comfort her as best she could, and they both cried many tears together. She says,“Betty is the best friend anybody could have,” and they keep in touch by phone when they are not together in Sweetwater RV Resort.

Celebrating the holidays

COURTESY OF MABEL BUDZINSKI

The community of Gem Estates saw a lot of its neighbors return in time for the Thanksgiving holiday and to enjoy a traditional turkey dinner prepared by a great group of volunteers, coordinated by Ron and Ellen Raymond. Residents also celebrated Veterans Day with a picnic, at which Ken Mann and Andy Pratt used their grilling expertise.
