Support the Troops director Mark Van Trees inspects care packages headed for Afghanistan. They contain basic items like coffee and toothpaste, which are precious cargo for troops stationed overseas.

Support the Troops remembers those serving overseas By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Mark Van Trees received the Champion of Service Award presented by Gov. Rick Scott on Nov. 12 for his work with Support the Troops. And it would be a good story — except Van Trees doesn’t like talking about it. “It’s certainly not deserved,” the Wesley Chapel organization’s director said. Instead, Van Trees prefers to talk about the dozens of volunteers who stock, store and pack the steady stream of care packages that get shipped to military personnel overseas. He believes they’re the ones who

deserve to be honored. He also likes talking about Bob Williams, the founder of Support the Troops, who worked tirelessly growing the organization until an accident in 2012 left him unable to continue the project. Williams deserves the credit,Van Trees insists, as indicated by the hundreds of certificates of appreciation addressed to him that decorate Van Trees’ office and the walls of the facility, located at 29807 State Road 54, that ships the packages.Williams now resides at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home in Land O’ Lakes, and Van Trees is now the person who works six days a week, raising money for the seemingly

endless postage expenses associated with shipping thousands of care packages overseas every year. The recipients live on military bases that don’t have the facilities for personnel to get the basic comfort items we take for granted in the United States, he said. And while receiving the award was a proud moment,Van Trees keeps a more personal kind of recognition in a box by his desk. “Thank you so much for the gifts. They are greatly appreciated,” reads one card from a member of the military.

Mary Maldonado stepped into a driveway in Dade City on Nov. 7 expecting to take a few photos in front of a home she was preparing to buy. She got a lot more than she bargained for. Maldonado arrived with her infant son, Leonni, and was greeted by Warrick Dunn, former NFL player and philanthropist. His charity, Homes for the Holidays, helps single parents realize their dreams of owning a home. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco County, who helped Maldonado through the home-buying process and set her up with an advantageous loan, Dunn welcomed her into a fully furnished home with a well-stocked kitchen. From living room furniture to a bedroom set for Leonni, the home was move-in ready. She signed the ownership paperwork, received her keys, and accepted a ceremonial check for $5,000, which went toward her mortgage, courtesy of Homes for the Holidays. Not bad for a Friday morning.

ince its introduction to the United States just after World War II, people have had a fascination with the Volkswagen Beetle — or more affectionately known as the Bug. So much, many people still think Volkswagen only ever made the Beetle or the popular bus of the 1970s. Even when VW stopped producing the Beetle for a short time in the early 2000s, excitement about the German car company continued with the annual Pasco Bug Jam. Now in its 26th year, it brought hundreds of VWs and thousands of people to the Pasco County Fairgrounds earlier this month. Here’s a look at what drove in.

FRED BELLET/PHOTOS

Lydia Childress, 5, of Fort Myers, was right at home among the Volkswagen buses and Bugs at the recent Pasco Bug Jam. Lydia’s mom and dad, Tanya and Mike Childress, were busy with customers at their vendor’s booth, Foreign Policy VW Parts & Restoration.

Sitting in his 1967 VW Bus, David Baigent’s reflection is caught in a vanity mirror inside the bus, which also has a toilet, fold-out bed, sink, refrigerator, closet space, and a hammock for two above the driver’s cabin. It sleeps four. David and his wife Tracey are originally from England, but now reside in Longwood.

Here, the well-known insignia on the front end of Chris Bachtel’s 1967 VW Bus was parked next to the colorful Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club 1972 Volkswagen Bus owned by Mike Ham. George Gharib of Palm Beach swiftly makes his way to the next row of VW Bugs, where he was looking for some customizing ideas. ON PAGE 1: The shiny chrome surface on the hubcap of Larry Franklin’s 1966 Beetle reflects a 1972 version of the famous Volkswagen car owned by James Suydam of Kissimmee. VW enthusiast Eric Werbelow of Sarasota is caught in the reflection as he looks for customizing idea and parts for the four Volkswagens in his family.

There were some Zzzzzs emanating from behind a trailered Volkswagen owned by Steve LeBlanc of New Port Richey. Michelle Wertz of New Port Richey attended the Pasco Bug Jan with LeBlanc, who was waiting for someone to buy his 1971 pink Bug. Steve’s mom, Dominique LeBlanc, was the original owner, and it had been sitting in the garage a while.

This 1999 Volkswagen Beetle owned by Jackie Miller and its offspring caught the eye of Regan Loomis, 13, of Umatilla, as she, her mom Bonnie Loomis, and friend Traci Bogle of Deland toured the many rows of VW show cars at the Pasco Bug Jam.

Bulldogs look past playoff loss to promising future By Michael Murillo Zephyrhills Bulldog junior linebacker Kevin Lee swats down a pass from Sunlake quarterback Dayton Feiden during the final game of the season that Zephyrhills won 22-7. The Bulldogs would lose a heartbreaking first-round playoff game, while the Seahawks would move to the next round after beating Ocala’s Vanguard High School.

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

The Zephyrhills Bulldogs played approximately 540 minutes of football this season — but it was the final two minutes that were the most disappointing. The team came up short on a fourth-andone that would have sealed a victory in their first playoff game in eight seasons. Instead, their opponent — Suwannee High School from Live Oak — drove down the field quickly and scored a touchdown. Suwannee then recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff for another score. And just like that, Zephyrhills’ season was gone. But not forgotten. “We’re a little disappointed about the loss, not getting the win up in Live Oak, especially being ahead most of the game,” Bulldogs head coach Reggie Roberts said. “But we played good football to get there, and we played good football when we got there. But we just have to finish at that level.” As the sting of not finishing a winnable playoff loss subsides — the team led 24-9 at the half — it will be replaced by memories of the good football that brought them to that point in the first place. Their 8-3 final record is the best of Roberts’ tenure, which began in 2010. It was their fourth straight year with a winning record, and the playoff appearance snapped an eight-year drought without postseason play. The Bulldogs took the field for that game ready to play their brand of football, not like a team that was just happy to be there or wanted to play conservatively. For his part, Roberts has no regrets about going for it on that critical fourth down at the end of the game. Converting that yard would have meant a victory, he said, and the circumstances at that time and the field position dictated it was the best move for the team. But that decision was made and the playoff game is over. And Roberts, like all successful coaches, doesn’t like to dwell in the past. He’s already looking ahead to 2015, and he likes what he sees. While he admits that replacing offensive

cogs like quarterback Ty Tanner, receiver Tyler Kirby and running back Jaylen Pickett won’t be easy, Roberts believes the team’s depth will step up and fill the gaps. “Our seniors will be missed, but by the same token, we have a lot of young players that know how to play football,” he said. The Bulldogs will welcome back known talent like receiver Jackie Tucker and running back Antwione Sims, who distinguished himself this season and in the playoff game. They also have a number of junior varsity players who are ready to graduate to varsity and contribute immediately. If there’s an early area of concern, it’s the kicking game. Somebody will need to fill punter and kicker Zach Gleaton’s spot, but there’s time to find a replacement. coach feels good about the talent he’ll carry into 2015. “I like what we have coming back,” Roberts said. He also likes the renewed community interest in Zephyrhills football, and the fact that coaches are now coming to him asking for advice on how to build and maintain a successful program. The returning players will bring a renewed desire to win and a lot of pride in what they’re building, but they’ll also carry some bitterness about the way the season ended. After the playoff loss, he found the younger players hurting after the game, even if they didn’t get on the field much. They were upset at the way things ended for the team, and the coach wants them to use that frustration as fuel for

next season. “They’re going to remember that pain,” Roberts said. “They’re going to remember this experience. They’re going to remember it takes blood, and hopefully that’s going to just energize them and motivate them to get back there (to the playoffs) every year.” If Roberts is looking for indications that the team will learn from this year’s lessons, he’s already seen some positive signs as the long off-season gets underway. The players aren’t interested in taking extended breaks, even when offered by the coach at the end of a hard-fought playoff game and a successful 2014 campaign. “I gave the kids two weeks off, and the kids were in the weight room” four days after the playoff game, he said.“If that doesn’t tell you anything, it tells me a lot.”

Out of sight, out of mind. Pat Mulieri wasn’t part of the decision that built Pasco County’s animal shelter well off the beaten path inside the Lake Patience community and behind Oakstead Elementary School, but there are times she wishes she was. The shelter is 2 miles off Land O’ Lakes Boulevard, requiring a little bit of navigation along Lake Patience Road to Dogpatch Lane. Locals know exactly where to go when they need to deliver a pet, or adopt one, but the thousands of new residents calling Pasco home each year are surprised to learn Pasco even has such a facility, and that sometimes makes it difficult to get the word out. “I came to this shelter years ago when I had lost a pet,” Mulieri, a 20-year member of the county commission, said.“My husband didn’t lock the screen door for our two little dogs. One came back, and the other didn’t.” What Mulieri found at the shelter, however, was something she was not ready for. “They let me in with the place closed, when they only had one building out here, and that’s when I saw the dead cats,” Mulieri said.“They had killed so many cats a day, and I didn’t even realize it. I couldn’t come back.” It would actually take years for Mulieri to return, but when she did, she was there to stay. Now Mulieri is a common face around the halls of the shelter’s administrative offices, and has been a major proponent in helping to build the shelter’s profile, and find homes for hundreds of pets each month. Promoting the shelter and finding ways to attract adopting families has fallen on the shoulders of Andrea Ciesluk, the assistant education coordinator at Pasco County Animal Services. Ciesluk joined the staff there earlier this year, and almost immediately, the shelter was getting noticed. “We want to advertise and get the word out so that people know who we are and where we are,” she said.“That’s not as easy as it sounds.” Ciesluk is doing it using a much different approach than what the shelter has done in the past. While animal services have typically worked with newspapers, television and radio to spread the word about the shelter’s needs, Ciesluk is reaching deep into the business community to find corporate partners willing to lend a hand — even if it’s simply through a new way of promoting events and specials the shelter has on a monthly basis. “What we are doing is getting new businesses and local businesses to sponsor an animal,” she said.“In return, every time we post that animal’s picture, people will see their involvement too.” Those businesses also have helped to reduce adoption fees for many families who might want to take a dog or cat home, but balk when they find out how much they

have to pay in order to do it. Business donations, Mulieri said, have helped reduce those costs to as low as $20. “That’s neutering and spaying, immunization and microchipping all in the same package,” Mulieri said.“That’s the best buy in town, and it’s the only way we’re going to cut down on euthanizing.” In 2011, less than 40 percent of the animals boarded at the shelter left it alive. But in 2012, the live release rate grew to 55 percent, and last year, had reached 81 percent. The shelter’s goal is to find homes for 90 percent of the dogs and cats brought through its doors, Mulieri said, but it’s going to require more work than just adoption specials. “You’ll never be able to adopt them all out, and you’ll never be able to cut down on the pet population until you change people’s ideas,” Mulieri said. Despite animal overpopulation, many families with pets shy away from spaying or neutering, feeling their pets need to have litters.A typical cat can have up to six kittens in a litter and can have three litters a year. That means one cat couple and their offspring, according to one animal group, can result in 420,000 more cats in seven years. And it’s not easy to find them homes. Last year, the Pasco shelter put down 27 percent of the cats it received. New shelter manager Mike Shumate realized that mindset needed to change. Before he arrived, qualifying families who fixed their cat or dog could send their bill to the county, and be reimbursed up to $40. “That rarely covered those costs,” Mulieri said.“People couldn’t afford to do it, so they wouldn’t do it. And the number of animals coming into the shelter was just getting out of control.” Instead, the goal is to partner with local veterinarians to offer discounts that would make such procedures affordable. On top of that, the shelter has partnered with Spay Pasco with the Trap Neuter Return program that allows for the trapping of feral cats that are then fixed for $10, and returned to their habitat. “We need to do this,” Ciesluk said.“And we’re going to keep working to expand it even more.” For more programs and specials at the shelter, visit PascoCountyFl.net/PAS.

PASCO SCHOOLS HONOR VETERANS

Pasco County schools hosted a districtwide Veterans Day presentation Nov. 11 at the Wesley Chapel Center for the Arts. Supervisor of Elections’ outreach ambassadors also conducted voter registration at all high schools on that day.

Money spoke loudly in this year’s election By Michael Hinman and B.C. Manion The Laker/Lutz News

He showed up around 6:30 a.m., just as the sun was starting to rise above the horizon. His place was in a side parking lot at Bridgeway Church, located on Wells Road in Wesley Chapel, and he came ready for the day. Nick Burgess put signs up around his pickup truck, touting his older brother Danny Burgess, who was running for Florida House District 38. Nick was staying until polls closed at 7 p.m., and he had brought enough food to tide him over until then, and a restroom just inside the church to help get him through the long day. Burgess was happy to be there, however. He wanted to show support for his brother, who was facing Beverly Ledbetter in the race to replace Will Weatherford in Tallahassee. And he has supported him from the beginning, especially when Danny told his family for the first time that he was going to run. “I’m behind you 100 percent,” Nick told

Danny.“The whole family is.That’s what it takes.” The community was behind Danny Burgess as well, giving him 60 percent of the vote and a rather seamless journey from when he was an 18-year-old Zephyrhills City Council member, to the 28-year-old man he is now representing eastern Pasco County in the state House. To do that, however, he had to get past retired educator Beverly Ledbetter, who felt there was a lot she could do in the Legislature. But if nothing else, she wanted to make sure voters had a choice. “I was excited by the fact that many people, for the first time, were getting involved in the political process,” Ledbetter said. “They were walking neighborhoods, putting up signs, and making phone calls. That is an accomplishment.” While Ledbetter felt she had local support from a dedicated group of people, one place she didn’t get much help from was the Democratic Party — at either the state or local level. Burgess picked up more than

$23,000 in support from the Republican machine, while the other major party chipped in just a little more than $2,000 to Ledbetter’s campaign. “You have to have money to actually get your message out,” Ledbetter said.“Besides your newspaper, none of the other major newspapers covered any of the local races, so people didn’t really get a great deal of information.” She is still trying to figure out why the party virtually ignored this race, which she feels could’ve made a huge statement if Democrats claimed a seat currently held by the Republican House Speaker, Will Weatherford. “That is part of the problem with people wanting to run, is that the state party gives you absolutely no support,” Ledbetter added. Burgess took 60 percent of the vote, and another Republican — Mike Moore — had about the same success in his race to replace Pasco County commissioner Pat Mulieri. Despite not picking up endorsements from regional news outlets, or Mulieri

COLLEGE RECEIVES GRANT

The Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation recently received a $10,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation to support its Concept College program. Concept College is an outreach program for high school students who are economically disadvantaged, minorities, teen parents, disabled, migrant, retrieved dropouts, or otherwise non-traditional. The program is coordinated with Pasco and Hernando County school districts to identify at-risk students. For information on the PHSC Foundation or Concept College, call (727) 816-3410, or visit PHSC.edu/foundation.

herself, Moore spent a lot of money to beat Erika Remsberg in the District 2 race. Moore finished with more than 91,000 votes in the race, and paid about $1.82 per vote received. Remsberg had a little more than 63,500 votes, paying out just 17 cents per vote, which shows the rather large gap between fundraising. Remsberg won just 11 percent of the precincts voting by an average of 46 votes, according to unofficial results from the Pasco County Supervisor of Elections office. Her biggest margin was the precinct at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Port Richey, one of the few precincts in the county that has more Democrats than Republicans. Early in her race, Remsberg knew her chances against a well-financed candidate in a Republican-leaning county were not the greatest, but the Land O’ Lakes social worker looked forward to the opportunity to run. “I love going for the underdog,” Remsberg told The Laker/Lutz News back in July. “It’s just that this time it’s me, which is a new experience for me. But I’m good with grassroots efforts and community organization, and I’m getting out wherever I can to share a message of how we all need to work together.”

brings people together with history, but also introduces others to the museum that has been at the barracks for more than a decade. “People still come up to us and tell us they didn’t even know the museum was here,” Johnson said.“That surprises me, but I’m glad that we’re finding ways to let everyone know what we stand for.” The museum is free to the public on Saturdays, and will open for special visits from schools and other groups during the week, and keep expanded hours during Lakeland’s Sun n’ Fun weekends in April. So much has happened since that day where the United States was drawn into a world war — the assassination of John F. Kennedy and 9/11 just to name a couple — yet, Johnson said the Pearl Harbor attack is something that must be remembered. “History does have a way of repeating itself, and it happens regardless of whether we learn the lessons before or not,” Johnson said.“It’s kind of scary to say that, but unfortunately, it’s going to happen again. But if you don’t remember the story, you’re most certainly doomed to repeat it again.”

their 90s.” This year’s event will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is free to the public, although donations also will be accepted. It will make it a full weekend for the museum, which normally is open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Age is now taking a lot of the veterans from that great war, yet interest remains strong in the world’s battle against Nazism and fascism. A good portion of the military museum — itself in barracks that were used by U.S.Army pilots during World War II — is dedicated to that. Yet, it’s tough to beat talking to actual eyewitnesses of a major historical event like Pearl Harbor. “These guys love to tell their stories about what happened that day,” Johnson said.“It never gets old to them, and it never gets old to me to see it.” This is one of a series of events the military museum has throughout the year, including special observances of D-Day and other historical milestones. It not only

DUNN, from page 1 While Habitat for Humanity provides a no-down payment, interest-free loan, applicants need to meet certain criteria to be eligible. They must have a need for affordable housing and have been at their current employer for at least one year. And while they don’t need perfect credit or a specific credit score, applicants must demonstrate that they have a history of taking responsibility for their debts. “Not everyone qualifies,” explained Stephanie Black, director of development and public relations at Habitat for Humanity. “We’re not doing them any favors by putting them into a home that they can’t afford.” As a result of the screening process, volunteer work and classes, default rates are very low. This was the 140th event for Homes for the Holidays, and Dunn — a former Tampa Bay Buccaneer — has been to almost all of them in the charity’s 17 years. For Maldonado’s celebration, he had to drive in from Atlanta. But he believes it’s important to attend each one while he can. “For me, it’s the experience,” Dunn said. “Getting those expressions and how they react.”

Sometimes the reactions come later, after the presentation and when the new homeowner can sit in their house and realize it really belongs to them. While he often has to travel to attend the events — Homes for the Holidays has helped families in a dozen cities and plans to keep growing — Dunn pays for all his travel expenses out of his own pocket. Dunn’s charity honors his mother, Betty Smothers, who died before realizing her own dream of home ownership. Now his charity helps single families realize that dream, and Dunn said he witnessed the true importance of charity’s work after he saw the first event covered on television. “When I went home and I watched the news, then it really hit me, the impact that I had that day,” he said.“Now I really understand the impact on the community.” Habitat for Humanity’s impact is seen in new homeowners like Maldonado and those who are going through the process of buying a home. And completing that process results in a great deal of satisfaction for both the homeowner, and Habitat for Humanity’s employees as well. “I love it,” Sadler said.“To see the smile on the family’s faces, to get to know the kids and the family, it’s an honor and a privilege to work for Habitat for Humanity.”

Rusty Huff, 91, left, of Land O’ Lakes and other Quilts of Valor recipients beam with pride in their new quilts made possible by the Quilts of Valor Foundation. World War II veterans are being honored again Dec. 7 as the Zephyrhills Museum of Military History remembers the Pearl Harbor attack.

TROOPS, from page 1 “Thank you very much for your recent donation,” starts another from a group hosting a charity golf event. “We would like to offer our sincerest gratitude and appreciation,” continues another card. They arrive daily from different groups and individuals from the Tampa Bay area and throughout the world. The thank you cards are small but meaningful tokens of gratitude from those who have been touched by Support the Troops and its mission, and each one means a lot to its director. “We read every one and then we post them out there (in the work areas) and we let all the volunteers know,”Van Trees said.“They’re not for me.They’re for the volunteers.” The packages themselves mean a lot to the recipients and the entire unit that shares in the bounty. Coffee, toothpaste, razors and socks are minor comforts, but coveted items for military members stationed far from home. Once Support the Troops gets requests from the soldiers or their families, volunteers assemble a 50-pound care package and dispatch it to bases in Africa, Afghanistan and other locales. They also take donations, whether it’s pallets of surplus Girl Scout Cookies or a single five-pack of razors. They accept private donations and whatever few dollars local residents can spare. The donations go to military-related causes, whether the items get shipped in care packages, or provide comfort to local homeless veterans, or are donated to other organizations with similar goals. They also ship a lot of candy, and those supplies are often replenished by donations as well. Last week, more than 320 pounds of Halloween leftovers made their way to Support the Troops courtesy of Academy at

the Lakes, a private preparatory school in Land O’ Lakes. The school’s National Junior Honor Society collects candy for Support the Troops every year, and the amount they donate grows annually as well. Colleen McCormick, a teacher at the school who delivered the candy, said the school was enthusiastic about seeing it all go to a worthy cause. “Our families are so great and so involved,” McCormick said.“It’s rewarding for (students) to see it all come together and then being given away.” Even though donations keep the shelves stocked and the boxes full — and the volunteer staff keeps things moving — postage costs can be daunting. At nearly $50 per package, it adds up quickly. Support the Troops spent more than $160,000 last year, Van Trees said, just to ship the packages. But if that’s the cost to fulfill every request and keep the post office busy (each recipient receives packages every couple of weeks while stationed overseas), Van Trees will keep finding a way to pay the tab.The important thing, he said, is that the ones sacrificing overseas, and missing holidays, birthdays and other life events with their family, never feel forgotten. Even if the media moves on to other topics, or spends more time on celebrities than soldiers,Van Trees wants people to remember there are still thousands serving in remote locations whose days are brightened by receiving a box shipped from Wesley Chapel. “It’s like Christmas,” he said of their reaction when receiving a package.“The thing we battle every day is to let people (here) know they’re still over there.” To make donations to Support the Troops, or request care packages for a member of the military, call (813) 991-4256, visit OurTroopsOnline.com, or e-mail Van Trees at mark@ourtroopsonline.com.

AROUND THE PARKS

Another season begins with morning coffee By Ian Marwick Happy Days RV Park

The fall colors are quickly reminding us that Florida is calling. All snowbirds recognize the signs. We seem to be closely related in some ways to the Canada geese, or the monarch butterflies. When it is time to rake or shovel, we get out of town! This is truly a happy time of year, and I know we all look with anticipation to renewing our old friendships and developing new ones. As usual, Dan and Judy Olson and our owners have given us a park that is a proud home for snowbirds to return to. New carpets in the hall, new fence for the pool, new paved entrance, and a well-manicured park. We did not have to suffer the heat and rain over the summer to do this, as Dan took care of it. Bravo for your effort. It also will be a time of reflection, for some of our old friends will not make this trek again. This is the natural way in the circle of life, leaving us thankful for their friendship, and filled with their memories: laughing, dancing, companionship, and wisdom. Still others have to put off part of this year through unseen medical problems. Hurry back, we miss you. Why is one hard chair better than another? Why is one table better than another? The Monday morning coffee hours at Happy Days RV Park may provide the answers.

COURTESY OF JUDY OLSON

A new sign at the Happy Days RV Park entrance greets residents and visitors.

It may be the geographical locations in Michigan, New York or Ontario. It may be an association with your favorite activities. It may be the compatibility of longevity, or like social styles. It may be because you like the wit, demeanor or openness. It is obvious: it is friendship. In any case, favorite chairs and tables are filled in this designed manner like the natural order of life. It is warming to look in this corner or that,

hear the familiar buzz and laughter, the loud roar of our extraverts, the lineups for coffee and doughnuts, and the banter of the raffle ticket sellers. Our Monday coffee hours have begun. Our past president Bill Wellivere was the guest host for the first few weeks until Linda Jenkins breaks out of the cold north. We are back to eating the doughnuts provided by a generous donation of Nicole, the

corporate representative of the park owner, and it is only the first week. Bill has not lost his touch. He pointed out that in order to fill in for the men not here yet, a couple of ladies sat in at the poker tables. One who will remain anonymous has a quite a bit of his money. Bill mentioned the park improvements that took place during the summer, and thanks to Dan and Jeremy for their help in assisting in making this possible. There are new park entry signs, a newly paved road at the park entrance, new vinyl fencing around the pool, and best of all, new carpet in the rec hall, replacing the 35-year-old one that was there before. Nicole Weiss from corporate welcomed us back and thanked all for making this a truly wonderful park. The volunteer list is up for coffee hour host. Get your team together and sign up. All activities are firing up. Check the activity listing for November and get in the swing. The next six months will be filled with sports, games, crafts, jam sessions, socializing, and just plain sitting back and watching the neighbors and time go by. So uncover the furniture, sweep off the floors, wash the windows, put out the patio chairs, restock the fridge, and enjoy, because the snowbirds have returned south. And, if you are reading this outside Happy Days, drop in, meet Judy in the office, and see why this park is a great place to spend your winters.

November started with so much going on in our park. We will start off by mentioning a luncheon for the ladies on Nov. 4, and I spoke to Joyce Bell about it. She informed me that the Lunch Bunch group enjoyed a wonderful experience. Pat McKain worked with the restaurant owners at DiMaggio’s That’s Amore Italian Cuisine setting up the luncheon. The restaurant was still waiting for some permits, so the 24 ladies from Grand Horizons were treated as guests. Upon arrival, appetizers of olives, cheese and pepperoni were served. The ladies then received a bowl of wedding soup, and then came a tomato and mozzarella cheese dish. Next, they had a choice of an Italian sausage with peppers and onions sub or chicken parmigiana sub. The main course was a generous portion of fettuccine with shrimp and crabmeat. For dessert the ladies received a cupcake and cannoli baked by their pastry chef. All the food was homemade, and some recipes were taken from generations of family cooking, and the atmosphere was magical. This was by far the best luncheon the Lunch Bunch group had ever experienced. The restaurant rolled out the red carpet for the women who attended, and served them a meal that was so good, words couldn’t do it justice.

Jim Leitzke introduces the Veterans Day program honoring all branches of the military at Grand Horizons.

On Nov. 6, approximately 40 people gathered at the community center for a social club meeting, talking mainly about the curtains for the stage. There also was an election of officers, and they included Cheryl Leone as president, Vic Dyson as treasurer, and Chris Fulton as secretary. A pancake breakfast, starting in the near future, was discussed, in addition to the golf cart parade to be held Dec. 6, right after PHOTOS COURTESY OF TERRY GARDNER the Egg ‘n Bag. Grand Horizons honored veterans from all branches of the military at a ceremony Nov. 8. Each branch of service was then recognized. After the names of each branch were mentioned, Loris Weber played a tune on the piano while the audience sang the song that went with each individual branch. For instance, Del O’Hara and Barbara Sullins called the names of the ones who served in the U.S. Army. We then sang “The Army Goes Rolling Along.”Then, Judi Leitzke called the names of the ones that live in Grand Horizons who served in the U.S. Marines, and the “Marines’ Hymn” was played on the piano by Loris while everyone sang. Loris Weber played each military branch’s theme on piano as names were called during a veterans ceremony.

Welcome home, everyone! It is nice to see everyone returning to our friendly park. Our bingo games have been going well all summer. We now have special meals and snacks. Of course, we serve our famous ice cream, too. Come be a winner. In October, we celebrated Halloween with a dance. Sandy and Chuck provided the lively music. Everyone enjoyed the snacks, and prizes were awarded for the best costumes. November brought the Veterans Day celebration. Pud Pelkey was the coordinator and provided a beautiful program. Many veterans shared their military experiences. Chris Donohue made a great speech. The

Returning residents get big welcome home back to Zephyrhills ceremony was followed by cake and coffee. Also in November, we had a scavenger hunt using our golf carts. Many people were seen whizzing around the park in search of the secret prize. After a fun search, everyone gathered for snacks. We are in the process of planning for Thanksgiving dinner for all those interested in gathering for the feast. Bowling has begun on Wednesday mornings at 9:30. Thanks to Jim and Dolly Harkenrider for getting this up and running. Shuffleboard players are filling the courts each morning, also. There is going to be all new horseshoe equipment for those that enjoy that sport. Our bus is operating for various trips, and thanks to Bonnie Pratt for driving. Wishing you all a happy, sunny winter and a great big welcome back.

AROUND THE PARKS

Changes springing up in new season By Sandra Abel Rainbow Village

As we drove into our Rainbow Village Resort for the first time in the 2014-15 season, we saw the new vinyl fence around the front of the resort. As you entered, you discover the beautiful landscape around the entrance and the office grounds, which were beautifully landscaped by our new residents, Andy and Diane Schmied. They have volunteered to take care and maintain the flowers and shrubbery. It is such a pleasure to watch them each day watering, taking care of the flowers, and creating new places for a fountain and more flowers.A big thank you to Andy and Diane. A lot of improvements were made like moving and painting utility sheds, new air conditioning at our main hall with heat, repairs to the pool, a remodeled women’s shower room, a new wooden fence at the rear of the resort, removed trees, upgraded water system for landscape and flowers, new storage shed for residents, and lots more improvements. Our resort manager, Sue Flynn, reported that we have some new staff members. Christy Rodriguez is in housekeeping, and Mike McClintic is in maintenance.Welcome to Rainbow Village. After many years of dedicated service to our resort, Bill Flynn has retired. We will never be able to thank him enough for all he has done, and we hope to get him to help out on a few projects we have planned this season. Bill will have more time to ride his motorcycle with his buddies and just to enjoy life. Thanks, Bill. Enjoy your retirement. We had a rough year since May as we lost at least 10 residents, and they sure will be missed. Pastor Don Wright died on Sept. 14. Our worship board, under the supervision of

Welcome to Rainbow Village. We all will miss Pastor Wright. who served us for seven years. Our deepest sympathy and love goes out to his wife, Patti, and family. On Halloween, residents were greeted in the office by our resort manager, Sue Flynn, and office manager Ann Ring dressed as M&M’s, and handing out treats to residents and pets in our resort. Activities have started for this season. Lots of card games, pool exercises, bocci ball, jamming on our lifestyle stage, Bible

study, and a new class taught by Carolyn Laub called chi kong, a therapeutic tai chi. Some benefits from this class are it balances the mind, body and spirit. Great for us snowbirds. Our first association meeting was with our new president, Ray Kappes, presiding. The board members were introduced and a lot of business was discussed. We will be having a Christmas bazaar on Dec. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon. Judy HerseyPhillips is the chair, and there also will be a big yard sale. Mr. and Mrs. Santa will make an appearance from 11 a.m. to noon. Baked goods and food will be available. Come and visit the vendors and do some Christmas shopping. We are looking forward to a great season.

Rainbow Village welcomes new pastor Jim Austin and wife Mary, who will minister to the residents.
