Water still primary gold standard in Zephyrhills By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com

Long before there was a Zephyrhills, and even before there was a Pasco County, people would journey through the dense, dangerous Florida forests to find a small oasis near the headwaters of the Hillsborough River. There they could find plenty of fresh, clean water bubbling up from the ground, always at a refreshing 72 degrees. The waters at Crystal Springs may not have had the healing and restorative powers some believed at the time, but it was cer-

tainly quite tasty. And by the time Zephyrhills itself was founded in 1910, the area already had a reputation for some of the best water in the state. So it’s no wonder a businessman named Don Robinson saw the potential of turning that water into more than just a local commodity in the early 1960s, and Zephyrhills bottled water was born. Today, hundreds of thousands of gallons of that commodity is shipped throughout the state. The plant, off 20th Street and Alston Avenue in Zephyrhills owned by Nestle Waters North America, employs 250 people making an annual average wage of

$46,000. Another 900 more people or so have jobs related to the operation around Florida. “It’s a great economic driver, but it’s also a great story for Zephyrhills to tell, and one it has told for decades,” said Vonnie Mikkelsen, executive director of the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce. This year, Zephyrhills bottled water celebrates its 50th anniversary, continuing to put this small city of nearly 14,000 people it borrowed its name from on the map. As new school year begins, be sure kids can hear teachers By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A child’s hearing difficulties are not always easy to spot. That’s why volunteers like Alice Jones of Zephyrhills can play such an important role in a child’s life. Jones — recently named Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida’s volunteer of the month — has spent the past several years traveling to various Pasco County schools to conduct hearing tests for children. The 76-year-old goes to schools within roughly a 20-mile radius of her home, sitting with children who are wearing earphones, and asking them if they can hear the sounds coming through the wires. When they can’t, Sertoma lets the school know, so they can inform the child’s parent. Most of the time the youngsters can See HEAR, page 6

After three straight undefeated regular seasons, Pasco High School slipped to 7-3 in 2013.They failed to win their district, making the playoffs as a runner-up in Class 5A-District 6. That record would represent a great season for many schools, but expectations run high at Pasco. And it’s a drop in production from what the Pirates have usually accomplished under Tom McHugh. Still, don’t expect the head coach to be disappointed in that outcome. “Last season with the things that happened within the team internally and the players, I think that we actually overachieved,” McHugh said.“I was proud of the way everybody reacted.” The team’s starting quarterback was dismissed from the team early in the year, MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTO causing an entire overhaul of the offense. Innovation yields national award for Saint Leo By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Two librarians at the Daniel A. Cannon Memorial Library at Saint Leo University have received national recognition for an innovative program they created. Jackie Bryan and Elana Karshmer recently returned from the American Library Association’s national conference in Las Vegas where they received the inaugural award for innovation in instructional programming. The award stems from a program the pair put together to help students effectively navigate the university’s library, learn about its resources, and meet its staff. They based it on the 1960s television series “Mission Impossible,” Karshmer said. They called their project, “Mission Impossible: Free Fritz.” “The whole point of this mission in the library was to go to different stations that we set up where they would actually practice information literacy skills, and then if they successfully completed those skills, they would get a letter,” Karshmer explained. When they obtained enough letters to spell a particular word, it would free Fritz, Saint Leo’s mascot. As students made their way through the stations, they completed challenges and had a chance to have fun, intended to reinforce the lesson they learned. In the upstairs stacks, for instance, students had to find a book. Once they found it, they hula-hooped, to reinforce the idea that the volume came from the library’s circulating collection. The librarians conducted research and borrowed ideas from other places when they were creating their program, said Bryan, who is a reference and instructional services librarian as well as an associate professor. “Gamification is a trend now in higher ed,” she said. “A lot of these things are out of (kindergarten through 12th grade). They’ve been

doing it forever,” said Karshmer, an instruction program and information literary librarian, as well as an associate professor. It took several weeks to design the program, which included a number of games and a pair of videos. One video explained what the students would be doing in the library. The other covered the research process.

After watching the video about research, students visited the library and used the catalog, the databases and the library website. The project reflects the university’s desire to help students get the best use of the university’s resources, Bryan said. Learning how to use the library when they start college helps give them a solid footing. “It really sets the foundation for the rest

of their academic career,” she said. “They may think they know how to find information, but there are so many skills that we can teach them to help find the correct information they need and how to evaluate it, as well.” It can also help transfer skills to other subjects. Students who learn how to use a database for English, for instance, can apply those same skills for research in other disciplines. Those skills are valuable beyond college, Bryan added. “Say you’re doing a project for some company you’re working for, and you have access to the public library. These are still skills you can use,” Karshmer said. “And, you’ll want to use them because people are going to expect you to be able to find highquality information no matter what you’re doing.” Many students know how to conduct Internet searches, but haven’t learned how to do scholarly research, Bryan said. “They’ll take the first results when they do a search, instead of drilling down,” Bryan said. It’s also important to know how to refine a search to obtain the information you need, instead of getting thousands of irrelevant results. “You need to find credible resources,” Bryan said. Brent Short, Saint Leo’s director of library services, said he knew Bryan and Karshmer were doing good work, but it was nice to see their efforts receive broader recognition. “What we’re really trying to facilitate and encourage is the ability to read deeply and write deeply,” Short said.“One of the temptations for students now is they think they can get an instant answer.” The library staff wants students to feel welcome, encouraged and supported, Short said. “We do have some expertise to offer,” he said.“We can help guide them where they need to go, and really save them a lot of headache and wasted time.”

CAMPAIGN CRUNCH

Politicians reveal where their dollars are coming from By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com

Erika Remsberg has not raised a lot of money for her bid to replace Pat Mulieri on the Pasco County Commission — and she never expects to. Through July 25, the lone Democrat seeking a spot on the commission has collected $4,425 on direct donations, better only than the $2,350 raised by Ken Littlefield — one of three people Remsberg may face in the November election. And it’s practically pennies compared to the nearly $162,000 both Mike Moore and Mike Wells have combined to raise for their own races so far. But Remsberg isn’t worried. While other candidates are getting the $1,000 maximum from many donors, she is averaging far less than $100 per contribution. And that’s a proper grassroots campaign in her eyes. “I have been at a financial disadvantage since I started,” Remsberg said. “I had to make careful decisions about how I spend money.” More than 80 percent of Remsberg’s donations have come from people living inside Pasco County, according to campaign finance records, maintaining what she says is her commitment to find support first among county residents. But not everyone has taken that approach, like one of the

Republicans seeking Mulieri’s seat, Bob Robertson. The financial analyst from Zephyrhills has raised a little more than $10,000 in donations in his primary fight against Littlefield and Mike Moore. But less than 20 percent of that has come from the county, or even from Florida, for that matter. “I think part of what that says is that my sort of boundaries of life are a little broader than Pasco County,” Robertson said.“These are people who know me, who believe in me, and really have nothing to gain from me personally. They are just interested and being supportive of what I’m doing and what I believe.” Many of those donations have come from Robertson’s native Maryland, and have consisted of smaller donations — well below the $1,000 maximum — from people Robertson has called friends and family. He would prefer his local amount of donations to be higher, but his focus has been more on making sure he doesn’t collect money from those who have business with the county, especially developers. Robertson, in fact, has only collected $250 — or less than 3 percent — of his donations from those who work in land development or sales directly associated with it. That was a check from contractor Terry Cradick of Pepper Contracting, who Robertson told The Laker/Lutz News last

week that he’s actually returning, because he since has found out Cradick does business with the county. It’s keeping his hands clean from those looking to make money with the county that has kept Littlefield away from not only those donations, but most contributions in general. The former state legislator has practically bankrolled his entire election, with just minimal support from donors. “I’ve made sure that any money that I’ve taken, that they didn’t have the potential of appearing before the board” of commissioners, Littlefield said.“I certainly can’t speak for them, but I’m sure those donors are looking for a foot in the door, and I’m not giving them one.” That philosophy is different with the remaining commission candidates, however, including the lone incumbent looking to keep his seat — at least by actions, if not by rule. Henry Wilson Jr., is trying to stave off a challenge to his seat from Mike Wells Jr., the son of county property appraiser Mike Wells Sr.The open primary Aug. 26 will let anyone choose between the two, regardless of the voter’s political affiliation. In a candidate forum last week in Dade City, Wilson tried to distance himself from Wells by telling the audience he wasn’t collecting money from developers and real estate agents.

MICHAEL HINMAN/STAFF PHOTO

Mike Moore, left, and Ken Littlefield have run nearly polar opposite campaigns for the District 2 seat on the Pasco County Commission, at least when it comes to fundraising.

“The first time around (in 2010) they didn’t support me, and the second time around (in 2014) they still didn’t support me,”Wilson said.“Those builders and developers are not Pasco County residents. I need to be business-friendly with them. But my support, I want it to come from our residents here.” Except Wilson is getting support from the developer community. More than $10,000 of his donations, or just under 30 percent, come from that group. That percentage is close behind both Wells and Moore, who each have had about a third of their campaign funded by those in the developer community. When presented that statistic, Wilson clarified his earlier statement, focusing instead on where geographically the money came from. “I have some local people, some local developers, who gave to me,” he said.“But the national firms, the national companies, they’re the ones who aren’t giving.” But of the developers who have contributed to Wilson, less than 15 percent listed addresses from Pasco County, according to an analysis of campaign finance records. These developers are small businesses that can’t be ignored, Moore said, in an email. “It’s humbling to know that so many people and small businesses believe in our cause, and have been willing to make phone calls, knock on doors, donate funds and put up yard signs,” he said. Wells is not ashamed of the support he’s received, adding that everyone deserves a voice, especially when they are contributing more than $350 million in new construction to the county. “Contractors, builders, Realtors, road builders, etc., are playing a major role in fueling our county’s economic engine,” Wells said, in an email. “These business people have invested heavily, and have a real interest to see their county run properly.”

This newspaper keeps growing The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Are newspapers turning into dinosaurs? It may appear the Internet is forcing a lot of newspapers to cut back, but the exact opposite is happening at The Laker/Lutz News. During a special celebration Aug. 5 at the Porter Campus of Pasco-Hernando State College,The Laker/Lutz News unveiled its new size and design, entering the world of broadsheet papers. The change makes the paper the same size as daily newspapers in the area, and provides even more room for local stories and photos relevant to the communities of Land O’ Lakes, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, New Tampa, Odessa, Zephyrhills and Dade City. The Laker/Lutz News publisher Diane Kortus appeared Aug. 6 on “Your Wake Up Call” on WWBA-AM 820 with Alex Hinojosa and Jenna Laine to talk about the new Laker newspapers, and where the industry is going. “The daily newspapers have had lots of challenges, both on the local level and national level,” Kortus said. “On the weekly

level, the community newspaper industry is stronger than ever.We give readers the kind of news they can’t get anywhere else.” Delivering news in the 21st century may mean having an online presence, like at LakerLutzNews.com, but true success at the community level is still making sure that there is a newspaper readers can hold in their hands. “People who read community newspapers, whether it be weekly community newspapers or daily newspapers, they only go to that paper’s website once a month,” Kortus said.“People want to get this news in the traditional newspaper format. “The news is important to them, but it’s not earth-shattering. They don’t need to know it immediately. They like to sit down with a cup of coffee and read it.” To hear the entire interview on News Talk Florida, visit tinyurl.com/LakerXLRadio. To see a video featuring the new size, visit tinyurl.com/LakerXLVideo. For pictures of the launch event at PHSC, visit tinyurl.com/LakerXLPics.

HEAR, from page 1 hear. But when they can’t, there are places where they can plug in for help, said Barbra Antonelli, an audiologist at the New Port Richey site for All Children’s Outpatient Care Center of Pasco. Children can be born with hearing loss or it sometimes develops as they grow older, said Judith Reese, an audiologist at JC Audiology in Lutz. Federal law requires screening of infants. That typically occurs before the baby leaves the hospital, or during a follow-up visit soon after. Some Pasco County public schools have staff members who conduct hearing screenings, but others use volunteers to do the checks. Sertoma volunteers, like Jones, con-

duct hearing tests for kindergarten, first- and sixth-graders in Pasco County public schools. The organization always is looking for more help, Jones added. She got involved because a member of the Zephyrhills Noon Rotary Club asked members to volunteer. There are various causes of hearing loss, Reese said. “One of the things that happens most often in children is a temporary hearing loss that is due to ear infections or even a build up of fluid in the ear,” Reese said.“Those are easily treated by medical professionals.” Sometimes the problem is not obvious, Reese said. Typically, if a child has an ear infection, parents become aware of it because it hurts. “So, they’re crying or their ears are real red,” Reese said.“But if it’s just a build up of fluid, they may kind of just disengage, or tug at their ear.” But sometimes fluid inside the ear doesn’t hurt, but is hindering a child’s hearing. In a case like that, a parent may think that their child is refusing to behave, or lagging behind in school because they’re not trying, Reese said. In fact, it may be that the child didn’t hear his parents or teacher, or didn’t hear them accurately. Some signs that children may have a hearing loss include errors in articulation, Antonelli said. It also may seem that children don’t listen well or have trouble following directions. Or, they may want the volume on the television turned up. When children don’t get help, they can experience academic and social difficulties. If the hearing loss is spotted early, though, those problems can be avoided. Even newborns can be fitted with hearing aids,Antonelli said. “Basically, they’ll never fall behind,” she said.

WATER, from page 1 Wise remembers the first time she saw Zephyrhills water after moving to the area in the early 1970s. “The whole phenomenon of bottled water was developed more in the 1990s, but I do recall a lot of businesses before that having that big bottle and drinking station,” she said. “Even then, you would pull out a small paper cup to get a little bit to drink, and it was fresh water from a place just down the road.” The spring water operation of Zephyrhills requires an average of about 650,000 gallons of water per day from Crystal Springs, said Kent Koptiuch, a natural resource manager with Zephyrhills parent company Nestle Waters. It’s shipped directly from the spring on a more than three-mile journey in an underground 10inch diameter stainless steel pipe. Once it arrives at the plant, it goes through a complex purification and packaging process — but it can be ready to ship in less than 15 minutes. “I grew up in the country, and we would drink our water out of a hose as kids,” Koptiuch said.“But if you look at history — especially ancient European, Asian and African history — people have been bottling water for thousands of years.” Of course, those methods would have been in goatskins or sheep stomachs … not exactly the most appetizing way to make water portable. “They didn’t have plastic bottles, but they still had to travel, and they had to carry water somehow,” Koptiuch said. The springs naturally push out an average of 35 million gallons of water per day, literally turning a small stream near the site into the Hillsborough River. While people no longer visited the springs hoping to be cured of ailments, Crystal Springs was a popular local recreational attraction for decades. However, when landowner Robert Thomas closed the springs in 1996, some residents in the 150 homes near the springs were outraged. They fought for years to reopen the springs to the public, and even tried to block Nestle’s ability to extract water from the site. Today, the only remnant of those recreational days is a set of cement steps leading

“I know it sounds like I’m making it up, but I don’t ever look ahead,” McHugh said. ”I couldn’t tell you who the second game of the season is until after we play Sunlake.” While the coach is looking to get back to his accustomed level of success and have fewer struggles than last season, he’s not sorry it happened. He said that the younger players have now learned that they can’t just step onto the field and expect everything to go their way. After fighting through last season and still finishing with a winning record and a playoff berth, McHugh hopes his athletes can apply the lessons from 2013 to have a stronger campaign in 2014. “Sometimes you can get kind of complacent and you think it’s (winning games) just going to happen, and sometimes a swift kick in the butt will help you,” McHugh said. ”No one likes to lose, so I think in a way it’s probably a good thing that things like that happen once in a while.” For his part, Starling knows that just being a quarterback for Pasco High School

More than 50,000 students ranging in age from elementary school to college visit the springs every year.An indoor classroom nearby teaches them all about the environment, and even water ecology. And small wooden bridges give visitors a chance to see where the springs and the Hillsborough River interconnect. “The most students we get are fourthand fifth-graders,” Koptiuch said.“Our focus is to educate the youth because they are going to be our future leaders.” Zephyrhills has been the “City of Pure Water” long before the bottling plant existed, but the business has helped solidify that slogan and made it even easier to market the city as a whole, the chamber’s Mikkelsen said. “It’s an international brand anchored right here in Zephyrhills,” she said.“It’s clean manufacturing, and very high-tech. So happy to be back on Zephyrhills soil By Lee Heffelfinger Gem Estates

It is so good to be back in Zephyrhills again — safe and sound — after a two-week vacation to Bethel, Pennsylvania. There we stayed in a farmhouse that was remodeled by our friends, Ray and Clara Moyer. The Moyers also have a house here in Gem Estates. The weather in that two-week period was fantastic, in the 60s and 70s. It only rained one evening, and of course it was when we were at my brother’s house in Schaefferstown having an outdoor get-together. We had a high school class reunion at the Dutchway restaurant, and there were 16 of the 35 classmates in attendance. Not bad, considering about 10 of them passed away during the past 50 years. We were invited to several home-cooked dinners. And if you know anything about Pennsylvania Dutch cooking, it was good food, and very filling. Joe and Ann Casey recently returned from a trip to Hawaii to attend Ann’s son, Chet Darby’s wedding. He and his new bride,Tammy, were excited to have Ann and Joe be part of the wedding party at White Rock Beach on Maui. The wedding took place near the beach homes of Clint Eastwood and Oprah Winfrey, which made it even more memorable. Other than the wedding, Joe and Ann spent the remainder of their vacation trip biking, swimming and horseback riding on the amazing beach, and enjoying the spectacular rainforest scenery with skyscraping volcanic peaks. They agree with the locals who say “Maui no ka oi,” which means “Maui

We still have our coffee socials on Thursday morning, and that’s where we hear the news about what is going on in the park. We know Betty York is having a rough time and is in rehab, and her grandson is staying at her house and is nearby to help her. We have several new residents that moved into the park. Shirley Schaeffer’s house on Rockford has been sold to Debi Molzon, and the Bernice Edwards property sold to David and Dale Taylor. Welcome to the park. We have several birthday celebrants in August: John Phillips, Pat Cook, Joan Newland, Joan Andress, Harold Beck, Sy Budzinski and Virginia Carlson. Happy birthday to all. We are planning a bus trip to Biloxi, Mississippi, in September for a mini vacation, staying at the Imperial Palace for four days. We can gladly take anyone along that has the $209 for the bus fare. A break from Grand Horizons, with adventures in Maine By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons

During the middle of July, we took a trip to Maine. We try to go there every so often as we have some good friends who retired in Maine, and we all get together for a good time. Before meeting them, we made a stop to see the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and Park. It was lovely there, and the lighthouse is situated on majestic rocky ledges on the Maine coast in Bristol. This is a favorite spot for artists and photographers, as the views are breathtaking. This is usually a spectacular spot to not only see the lighthouse and the view, but also sit for a while on the benches that are in the park and take in the surroundings. It was somewhat foggy that day, but we could still take in the various sites, and it was so relaxing. This lighthouse was selected by Maine residents to represent their state on the quarter in 2003.The lighthouse is 39 feet tall and commands a dramatic view of Johns Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The light was automated in 1934, and later the fog bell, which hung on the bell house, was removed. After viewing the lighthouse and park, we went to a fisherman’s museum, which was adjacent to the lighthouse. Inside, we saw the navigation room that had an exhibit with the lens formerly at Baker Island Light, on loan from the U.S. Coast Guard. This is a Fresnel lens built in France. Also seen were a bronze buoy bell and iron chain, a four-valve mechanism from a whistle buoy, and a Lyle gun for shooting a lifeline to ships in distress. You also can see a chart of the coast of Maine used by fishermen and all coast traffic, along with pictures of all the lighthouses on the coast with numbers showing their location on the chart. We then went on to the Fish House, which is the work area of the lobsterman. Here you will see tools and gears on workbenches, and lobster pot buoys that are

hanging on the walls. The gallery consists of working half-models of fish boats, and more photographs showing aspects of the industry in bygone days.Almost all exhibits have been donated by fishermen and their families. From here, we saw some more sites like a working alpaca farm. The alpacas were out in full force, and they looked so docile. I honestly didn’t get to find out firsthand, as I

was quite intrigued by the gift shop and items that were made from alpaca. They were so soft. On to a big department store called Big Al’s Super Values, and they had items that we haven’t seen for quite some time. It was a delight just to browse through the store. It actually brought back pleasant memories. We went on a cruise and got to see the

sights from the water. It was so relaxing, and the two hours just flew right by.After the boat ride, we did view several more lighthouses, and each one was different than the other. Each one had a distinctive quality about it. While we were going home to Connecticut, we did make a stop at Scarborough, Maine, to see Lenny at Len and Libby Chocolates. This place houses the world’s only life-size chocolate moose. I had to see it to believe it, and the ad was so true. There was Len, but they also had Libby, also life-size.Yes, it was a chocolate Maine black bear and her two cubs. We just had to see this, as we couldn’t picture it. It was almost unbelievable. Our last stop on this trip was to visit the Hebert Candy Mansion located in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. This is a sweet adventure for the entire family. They had every type of candy available for sale. There were all kinds of handcrafted chocolates. One thing was different, and that was an ice cream buffet that we just had to try out. It was sure worth it.Yummy!
