Predictions as to which Republican candidate will come away with the prize of the national party’s presidential nomination is an impossible task this early in the race. But there is no doubt that Florida will be a pivotal state in a hard-fought 2016 election, according to Susan MacManus, a University of South Florida political scientist. “There’s not another state in the country that will be this competitive,” she said. “It’s considered a bellwether, a microcosm.” MacManus addressed about 30 people at the Conservative Club of East Pasco on June 15 at the group’s monthly meeting in Zephyrhills.

The city of Zephyrhills lost its bid to purchase Hercules Park, but there is hope still that a large swath of the park and its aquatic center can become city property. The Pasco County School Board unanimously voted to begin negotiating the park’s sale with developers from Gh&G Florida LLC. Their bid for $2.3 million topped Zephyrhills’s bid of $1.7 million for the 15.5acre park. But Deputy School Superintendent Ray Gadd said any deal brought back to the school board must stipulate that between 10 acres to 11 acres of the park would be donated to the city of Zephyrhills. The acreage would include a fitness trail, the children’s playground and the aquatic center. School board member Allen Altman said he agonized over his vote. He explained: “We just don’t have the ability to turn down additional money right now.” The school district is recovering from significant budget cuts resulting from the economic crash in 2008. The lack of funding for capital improvement projects is critical,

The Interstate 4 corridor will be key to carrying the state, she said. Gov. Rick Scott had just a 1 percent edge in votes along I-4 in his re-election victory over former Gov. Charlie Christ in 2014. And, past presidential elections were decided by about that same slim margin. “Almost half of registered voters are between Pinellas County and Daytona Beach,” MacManus said. Florida mirrors the nation in demographics such as population age and diversity among registered voters, though not among total population. It is a myth, MacManus joked, that people in Florida are 95 years or older. Also untrue

said school board member Cynthia Armstrong. “It is our constitutional duty to do fiduciarily what is best for our people, our students, who are also the people in Zephyrhills,” she said. Other board members echoed those sentiments despite impassioned pleas from Zephyrhills’ Mayor Gene Whitfield and others to accept Zephyrhills’ bid. “I’m disappointed,” Whitfield said. “We want the park. We’ll do everything we can. We’ll wait to see what they offer and proceed from there.” Prior to the school board’s vote, Whitfield recounted the park’s history. He described a “handshake” agreement nearly 50 years ago between Hercules Powder Co. and the school district that the park would be used for children and for education but not for commercial use. At one time Hercules Powder Co. was the largest employer in Zephyrhills. The company processed pine stumps into rosin, turpentine and pine oil on about 80 acres. The property later became sites for the park, Zephyrhills High School and Woodland
Elementary School. Some residents had feared that a gas station would be built on a corner lot at U.S 301 and County Road 54, adjacent to the park. But a $1.7 million bid from Del Lago Ventures Inc., affiliated with Race Trac Petroleum Inc., was rejected. Belleair Development Group, with a $1.6 million bid, also lost out. “Something needs to be worked out, because we in Zephyrhills need that (park),” said resident Fern Williams. “I’m not even seeing what your vision is with a gas station on that corner.” In April, school officials announced plans to put the corner parcel on the market for commercial sale. Zephyrhills’ City Council previously agreed to rezone the site with expectations that the school board would consider leasing the remaining acres to Zephyrhills for $1 a year for 100 years. In March, he sent a letter to Chairman Ted Schrader naming the legislative delegation’s five appointments to the panel. “We strongly urge you to make the commission’s report binding,” he wrote. But he also complimented Schrader for statements that county commissioners would distance themselves from the panel and “not micromanage.” Coalition members have not met with Corcoran as yet, Colson said. The lawmaker in recent weeks has been in Tallahassee attending a special session of the Florida legislature. “We’re waiting until he is back in Land O’ Lakes,” Colson said. The coalition and Corcoran don’t agree on every issue. Corcoran has said he wants an elected county administrator, but coalition members want to keep that a non-elective position. Other issues supported by the coalition include term limits, single-member and atlarge districts, a $250 limit on campaign contributions, nonpartisan elections, ethics reform and a process for residents to recall elected officials. The petition will be promoted through social media and online.

Clearing up some myths about Spanish moss By Whitney C. Elmore
Hence, it appears that Spanish moss is causing a problem, but it really isn’t. So, Spanish moss is not killing trees. On rare occasions, moss growth can be heavy enough to shade the leaves on trees causing photosynthesis to the host plant to slow, and that might result in slower growth. But a healthy tree will outgrow the moss. With heavy moss accumulation – the added weight can break branches. So, it may be necessary to remove excess moss to keep limbs from breaking and causing damage to property, people or animals. If you wish to remove the moss, keep in mind that it will grow back. While it’s usually best to have an arborist remove the moss, you can remove it by hand – just be careful not to fall or injure yourself. Most of the time it simply isn’t necessary to remove the moss. In fact, many birds build nests from Spanish moss, and other animals use it to build shelters. So, removing the moss can have a negative impact on wildlife. Historically, Spanish moss has been used for everything from stuffing in cushions and mattresses to home insulation. Today, it’s more commonly found in floral and ornamental arrangements. If the moss hanging from your plants bothers you, carefully remove it. The rest of us will simply enjoy the view. Spanish moss is an icon, symbolic of lazy southern days. It sways in the breeze, welcoming travelers to Florida. Its tendrils trail, acting as a beacon to those looking for adventure in the Sunshine State. But for some Florida residents, Spanish moss is not always such a welcome sight — especially if it’s hanging from our oaks, cypress trees and ornamental shrubs. That’s because Spanish moss is often misunderstood. Spanish moss is a bromeliad and not a moss at all. It’s a perennial plant closely related to the pineapple. Spanish moss is an epiphyte, which means it grows on other plants, but it isn’t a parasite. Epiphytes gather nutrients from the air and even from the dust settling on the surface of their host plant. Spanish moss literally catches moisture and nutrients using tiny scales along its leaf surface and is quite drought tolerant. When residents notice Spanish moss, or even ball moss, on plants that seem to be in decline, many automatically assume that the Spanish moss is the problem. If fact, what you’re seeing is the moss inhabiting “easy” areas on the plants that are already struggling due to some other issue. The Spanish moss (and ball moss) isn’t a parasite or a disease, so it rarely ever causes a problem. Spanish moss doesn’t have roots, so it cannot “hook” itself into plants – it simply hangs on by wrapping itself around a structure and using it for support. When a plant is struggling, the canopy will often thin exposing the Spanish moss that’s hanging on the plant to more sunlight. That causes the moss to grow more vigorously.

94-year-old pens her first book By B.C. Manion

There was an excitement in the air on a Tuesday afternoon, as people gathered in the reception area in the building on East Chapman Road in Lutz. People had trekked from such places at Georgia and Texas, Wesley Chapel and South Tampa, Carrollwood and Lutz, to be there. They wanted to hear Gladys Kuhn — Gobby, to those who know her — talk about her first book. It wasn’t a typical setting for a book signing, as this one was at Horizon Bay, a retirement home at 414 Chapman Road East. And the author making her literary debut was 94 years old. She didn’t read dramatic passages from her book, which is simply called “Gobby.� Instead, she shared recollections from a past that is chock full of fun and adventure. At the front of her 105-page book, Gobby offers this disclaimer: “To whoever reads this book: All the facts, dates, times and details may not be completely accurate. I am getting a little forgetful at 94.� The book, which is dedicated to her children, tells the story of a woman who remembers when horses delivered the family’s milk, a card in the window let the ice man know how much ice to leave and movies cost a nickel each. She recalls a time long before television, cellphones and computers. Gobby grew up in Chicago during the Depression. “Sometimes the food on the table was pretty skimpy,� she writes. “Mom would make Brown Flour Soup, where she would brown the flour and butter in a fry pan, then slowly add water and onions. I hated it because it had onions in them, and I didn’t like them as a child.� But she adds, “We always had homemade bread with it to fill the tummy and, sometimes, Mom would put a little sugar and canned milk on the bread if you didn’t like the soup.� The book recounts her family’s life, as she was growing up — the jobs her father held, the homes they lived in and how they had fun. She recalls getting a job in an embroidery factory after high school, to help pay for her dancing lessons. That’s when she met her friend, Ruby Ryan, and the two of them joined a show that was heading to New York. “We played all of the big theaters,� Gobby’s book recounts. “We interviewed with the Rockettes and got hired, but the war started and my brother was called to service, so my Mother made me come home.�

The book also follows Gobby’s marriage to Bob Kuhn and the family they had together. It tells tales of her life as a Girl Scout leader and the adventures she shared with her scouts. And, she recounts the family’s life on the lake in Odessa, and the good times she had while sailing. Throughout the book, her love of life is evident. In fact, she concludes many portions in her memoir with this simple, declarative sentence:“Life is good.� During her book chat, Gobby’s eyes lit up as she recalled the happy times that she’s had. But she also told those gathered that she’s had her dark times, and for a period of time she had wanted to die. But that was before she met Raymond Paradis, who also lives at Horizon Bay, she says, and when she mentions his name, she becomes joyful again. Those gathered to celebrate Gobby’s book release were delighted to be there. “I think it’s pretty remarkable. My mother has always done remarkable things,� said her daughter, Lynda Rix, who lives in Lutz. Her daughter, Kathi Traywick, of Ellijay, Georgia, helped Gobby organize her book. So did Melissa Horvath, now a graduate student, who was volunteering at Horizon Bay. Susan Cuellar, of Carrollwood, helped her mom to get started on the book. “A lot of times, as people age, we lose some of our hobbies,� Cuellar said. “I was looking for a new thing to kind of keep mom busy. Something for her to do. I had an old computer. She was having a hard time writing. I thought she could type. “And, it turned into a book,� Cuellar said.
The Gulf Harbors branch of the Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office will be able to accept applications for new concealed weapons permits, effective June 24. During regular business hours, customers will be able to visit the Gulf Harbors location, 4720 U.S. 19 in New Port Richey, to apply for a concealed weapons permit, according to a news release from Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano. Fingerprints, photographs and related services will all be available to process new applications. “As tax collector, I am committed to improving customer service in every way I possibly can,� Tax Collector Mike Fasano, states in the release. “Processing concealed weapons permit
applications is an important service that until recently was carried out by state-level workers. With passage of legislation last year that allows the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to delegate that responsibility to county tax collectors, our office was one of 30 in Florida to request the ability to provide this service. New applicants will be able to visit our office and quickly go through the steps to apply for a concealed weapons permit. The application will be sent to Tallahassee for approval and issuance,� Fasano says. Concealed Weapons Permit services are available at the Gulf Harbors branch of the Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Tuesdays and Thursdays they are available from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. “This service is not available on Saturdays at this time. Appointments for concealed weapons permit applications are not required. SUELLEN SMITH RECEIVES HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Suellen Smith, cafeteria manager at Zephyrhills High School, received the Community Humanitarian Award from the Florida School Nutrition Association at the 2015 FSNA Annual Conference in Daytona Beach. The award recognizes an individual who has applied his or her knowledge and expertise to help others in their community in a humanitarian effort. Throughout the year, Smith has collected clothing and accessories for students who cannot afford prom and homecoming attire, organized the collection and distribution of new backpacks filled with toiletries, food and basic school supplies, and served as homecoming coordinator. Smith’s latest project is a student-mentoring program. She also raised $3,500 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Tampa East Sertoma celebrates 50 years of service The Tampa East Sertoma club celebrated 50 golden years of community service at a June banquet. More than 70 charter, past and present members joined the celebration to reminisce and toast the club’s commitment to helping others. The club has donated more than $1.5 million and more than 30,000 service hours to support local organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy of Tampa Bay, Support Our Troops, Seniors in Service, Hillsborough House of Hope, Sertoma Youth Ranch and more. Sometimes that deal you’re getting that seems to be too good to be true is too good to be true. Most professions in Florida are regulated by a state, county and/or a city license, according to the Better Business Bureau and the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Unlicensed professionals typically lack the proper qualifications required of a license and will bid a price much lower than that of a licensed professional just to get the job, the Better Business Bureau says. Unlicensed activity is against the law. The Better Business Bureau and Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation take unlicensed activity very seriously, because it threatens the safety of Florida’s consumers as well as takes away business from licensed professionals through the state. Those allowing unlicensed contractors to perform services also run the risk of being fined or arrested. The Better Business Bureau and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation hear from consumers all over Florida who have been victimized by unlicensed persons in various professions. Consumers complain they’ve received substandard services and, in some cases, that the contractor ran off the with their money without doing any work. Here are some reasons to hire a licensed professional: • A licensed person has the required education, experience, insurance and qualifications to obtain a license.They must pass a competency examination before practicing. • Many licensed individuals are screened for prior criminal history. • Regulatory agencies can discipline and even revoke a license if the person does not live up to professional standards. This provides a strong incentive for the licensee to do good work. • You may be able to sue the licensee in civil court for problems related to the work done. The best way to avoid becoming the victim of unlicensed activity is to verify licenses and check references before you hire a professional. Consumers can verify professional licenses online at MyFloridaLicense.com, or by calling (850) 487-1395. Require a copy of their current certificate of insurance. Pay by credit card, if possible; you may have additional protection if there’s a problem. Check that the contractor’s vehicle has signs or markings on it with the business name, phone number and the appropriate state license plates. Scott Walker, who has not officially announced as a candidate, was not impressive. “I was rather disappointed,” she said, though she will give him another chance. “I didn’t think he’d had a lot of sleep.” Bush’s launch of his campaign, however, was masterfully done, she said. He spoke to a crowd that reflected the diversity in Miami and across the country, dispelling the criticism that Republican crowds are mostly white. MacManus also noted that the Republican field of candidates is more diverse than Democrats running for president. Bush’s first speech as a candidate struck an anti-Washington tone, MacManus said. She expects he will tout his economic record in Florida and his education reforms, as well. The question MacManus is asked most often is who will win Florida’s Republican primary, Bush or Sen. Marco Rubio. She doesn’t have a crystal ball on that one. “So much is volatile,” she said. She does predict that the 2016 presidential race will be the most expensive ever,

However, local and state candidates may face challenges because national races, including Congressional elections, will compete for donations and media attention. They could be “starved out a bit,” MacManus said. On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is the front-runner for the party’s nomination. But MacManus said, “It is surprising to see the interest in (Sen.) Bernie Sanders…People find him very interesting.” She also has been surprised that there are women voters who like Sen. Elizabeth Warren “but wouldn’t vote for Hillary Clinton.” Some of Clinton’s support comes from women voters who believe she got a “raw deal” in 2008 when then-candidate Sen. Barack Obama won the nomination. But there is another reason. “She would be the first woman president,” MacManus said. “People love people that can break the mold. That’s why Obama got elected. He broke one of the biggest barriers – race.” Voter turnout will be crucial for both parties. “The emphasis, and rightly so, will be to get people to vote,” she said. Though extended and early voting is popular, the trend hasn’t boosted overall turnout, she added. “Both parties have felt the sting of bad turnout.” With the election about 17 months away, residents should be prepared for campaigns that likely will be fought through social media, scare tactics and negative advertisements, MacManus said. “That’s kind of sad,” she said. But on the plus side, Florida and Tampa Bay will be the place for politics. “Thank God, I don’t live in North Dakota,” MacManus said.“How very dull.”

When Jeff Sproat was offered a chance to play a golf simulator a few years ago, he wasn’t interested. He was a real golfer who played real courses. What interest could he have in a simulation of the game he loved? Then, he tried it. “I ended up spending about three hours in there. I got hooked,” Sproat recalled. Years later, it’s become more than his hobby. It’s his business. Sproat is the owner of Golfer’s Grail Indoor Golf & Tap, 10019 N. Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 100, in Tampa. With four simulators, he’s spent the past couple of years encouraging people who are skeptical of the concept, like he was, to give it a try. There are many aspects of the indoor golfing simulation that mirror the outside game, Sproat said. Customers bring their own golf clubs and use them for different shots, just like they would on any course. They use real balls. They swing as hard as they would outside. And they can play just about any game you’d find at a golf club or tournament, including driving contests, closest-to-the-pin competitions and even target golf games. And the game is scored the same way, too. Still, there are important differences, he said. Golfers are competing on simulations of real courses and some imagined ones — 66 in all, not counting five putt-putt courses and a program that lets players smash windows for fun. When they hit the ball, it actually makes contact with a screen onto which the course is projected. While they’re playing, LED sensors track the club swing, and audible sensors track the ball.That data provides an estimate of the accuracy and power of the shot, and the results are displayed by showing the ball either landing in a preferred spot, or somewhere else that reveals

Sproat has played a little from every course on the simulator, and said they’re accurate to the real-life counterparts he’s tried out in real life. And while the players aren’t actually at those locations, they won’t get any closer to the courses without airfare, time off from work and a hard-to-get tee time. “It is the next best thing, because you actually are hitting the ball. You’re playing the shots. When it’s uphill, you have to hit it harder; when it’s downhill, you have to account for that,” Sproat said. On July 4, guests can celebrate freedom with special nameyour-own-price pet adoptions on the kennels marked “Ready to Go.” All adoptions include spaying/neutering, vaccinations, county license tag, microchip with free lifetime chip registration, and a holiday tote bag. The event also will feature a cookout lunch served by volunteers and supporters to benefit medically needy shelter pets, free pet adoptions on July 4 and July 5 for all active and retired members of the U.S. military with proper ID, and complimentary patriotic pet name tags for those attending the event.
The Pet Resource Center reminds all pet owners to keep pets safely indoors during festive fireworks, with county ID tags securely fastened at all times. On July 4, the shelter will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., for adoptions and lost pet searches. The facility will be closed on July 3.
