HART rolling out regional bus service North Tampa Aero Park airport up for sale

By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

The debate over building and operating a tri-county bus rapid transit system on Interstate 275 won’t be settled for months. But, on July 1, Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, known as HART, will launch a new limited express bus service down I-275 from Wesley Chapel to Tampa. Connections also can be made to existing routes operated by Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority with services to Largo, Clearwater and St. Petersburg. The 275LX route will be a first for regional transit in the Tampa Bay area. It also will be a test of the regional potential for bus transit. Funding for the new route is from about $1.2 million in grants from the Florida Department of Transportation. Funds are expected to cover operating expenses for 18 months. “We’re very excited about this service,” said Steve Feigenbaum, HART’s director of service development. “We have very high hopes for it.” Route 275LX largely will follow Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Interstate 275. Feigenbaum said this service is separate from a proposed “catalyst” project for a bus rapid transit system that would travel on dedicated lanes built on the shoulders of I275.

By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

The Florida Department of Transportation funded a study that prioritized a 41-mile bus rapid transit system from Wesley Chapel to St. Petersburg. Initial construction estimates were nearly $455 million. Supporters hope that bus rapid transit can jumpstart a long-range transit vision for the area. Opponents say the project is too limited, too expensive, and won’t, by itself,

North Tampa Aero Park is on the market. The sales price for the licensed public airport is $4 million, according to brokers with CBRE. The company’s airport specialist group is in charge of marketing and selling the airport, located at 4241 Birdsong Blvd. “We’ve had quite a bit of interest,” said Gary Bauler, broker and first vice president for industrial properties at CBRE in Tampa. The airport, which dates to the mid1970s, covers 21 acres sandwiched between Wesley Chapel Boulevard and Interstate 75. Compark 75, a business park with premier office, warehouse and manufacturing tenants, is adjacent to the airport. The airport offers about 10,000 square feet of maintenance hangar space; 3,500 square feet of offices; three platted residential lots; office and hangar buildings; a fuel farm, 16 T-hangars; annual runway easement

Park once again may be a place to make memories By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When Peterson Park originally opened, it was a place where motorists traveling down U.S. 98 could pull over to a wayside rest area to take a break. But, it was more than that. The small park, south of the Lacoochee River, became a popular place with locals — and was the setting where people made memories that have lasted for decades. When Scott Black, a Dade City commissioner, shared the news on his Trilby Homecoming Facebook page that Pasco County is seeking to reopen the park, his page lit up with comments. One post, by Tim Gibson, recalls:“I spent many summer days there as a kid (and enjoyed) fried fish, hushpuppies, cheese grits and baked beans.” Larry McElveen shared his recollections, too: “I remember picnics, family reunions and especially the summer swims with my Crawford (Sharon, Brenda and Janet) cousins at Peterson Park. Fond memories, indeed.” Rodney McLeod experienced an especially big moment at the park:“This is where I proposed to Debbie Marsee on 13 March 1981,” he posted. “Happy to see it reopened.” While many shared memories of socializing at the park, Barbara Basham recalled enjoying a different aspect of Peterson Park. It was, she posted,“my go-to place for reading and quiet time.” Alan Spriggs recalled going to the lowlying park when it was under water: “We even had fun when it flooded, trying to find the (picnic) tables to sit on,” he posted. And,Alvaro Fernandez shared a memory of a higher spiritual purpose for some visits to the park:“I remember the Baptist Church would baptize at the river at that location,” he posted. Black, a local historian with a deep fascination for Trilby’s history, keeps people up to date on news involving the community. When he posted about Pasco County’s intention to sign an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation for a 30-year lease for Peterson Park, he couldn’t believe the extent of the reaction. “I’ve never had one (post) that generated this much interest,” Black said. “This had more views than anything:“11,647 people were reached, 274 people have reacted with Emojis, 113 comments. 147 shares,” he said. Peterson Park, which sits on less than 2 acres, became a park in 1952, when the state road department decided to establish wayside parks along state highways. The park is on the west side of U.S. 98, just south of the Lacoochee River, near the Pasco-Hernando county line. “They would set up these nice little picnic areas for the travelers, for them to stop,” Black said. Besides being a place for picnics, it was next to the river, so people could fish there, swim there and put in their boats there,

B.C. MANION

Scott Black has a Facebook page called Trilby Homecoming. When he announced Pasco County’s plan to sign a lease with the Florida Department of Transportation that could lead to the park’s reopening, the post unleashed a floodgate of memories involving the park.

This was a group of church members from the Trilacoochee Church of Christ having Sunday dinner after the morning church services.

Black said. The park had concrete picnic tables and benches, which are still there. “Everything is pretty much original,” Black said, noting county parks department may want to consider keeping it just the way it is. The site does flood periodically, so it’s probably not a good idea to have wooden picnic tables, or a dock, because those would be damaged by floodwaters, Black said. The park has been gated off for more than 20 years, according to the agenda item involving the lease agreement.

Peterson Park is a low-lying park, which is prone to flooding. This is a look at the park in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

The county’s Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Department is interested in reopening it. Doing so would provide access to recreational opportunities along the Withlacoochee River, which is a state-designated paddling trail, according to county staff. Reopening the park would provide opportunities for picnicking, fishing, wildlife viewing, canoeing and kayaking, the agenda item says. There is no current timetable for reopening the park. The agenda item for the lease states that

county staff “will continue to seek grant funding opportunities to redevelop the park. A county match may be required but would be presented to the BCC (County Commission) for approval at the appropriate time.” Black hopes the county will be able to secure funding to reopen the park. “This is where I grew up out here, so it’s a special place for me,” Black said.“People will drive by and bemoan the fact that the park is there, but can’t be used.” To read more of people’s memories, or to add your own, go to the Trilby Homecoming page on Facebook.

Delay appears likely on Ridge Road extension permit By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County officials were hoping for a decision on a permit, and a construction start for the proposed Ridge Road extension by winter 2018. Instead, a revised schedule provided to the United States Army Corps of Engineers projects the anticipated permit decision in late February 2019. Despite the revised time frame, Pasco County Administrator Dan Biles remains

hopeful of a quicker decision. “I still think there’s a way to get there this year,” Biles said. Pasco is whittling down a checklist of additional information requested by the Army Corps in May 2017. Monthly status reports are provided to the Army Corps and weekly conference calls are held. Biles said he was set to meet with Army Corps representatives on June 15 in Cocoa Beach.

“We wish we’d moved here sooner!”

Members of the Pasco County Metropolitan Planning Organization got a brief update on the project at their June 14 meeting in New Port Richey. A May 3 letter to the Army Corps, with the new schedule, was included in an agenda packet for the meeting. The county has been on a quest for the Ridge Road extension permit for nearly 20 years. The roadwork would entail an 8-mile extension of Ridge Road, which currently dead-ends at Moon Lake Road in New Port Richey. The new segment would link Moon Lake to U.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes, across from an entrance into the master-planned community of Connerton. The county puts a priority on Ridge Road as an east-west evacuation route during hurricanes. Environmentalists are fighting against the project, which would cut through environmentally sensitive wetlands in Serenova Preserve. The Army Corps is the federal agency in charge of regulating the Clean Water Act. In April, the agency selected one of 17 proposed routes through the Serenova Preserve as “the least environmentally damaging practicable alternative.” But, the Army Corps requested additional engineering and environmental information, including wetlands mitigation plans. In March, Pasco County commissioners approved a wetlands credit purchase agreement with Ecosystem Investment Partners

Visitors to the Serenova Tract at Starkey Park Wilderness Preserve can enjoy trail walks past scenic water views.

Credit Co., for up to $4.4 million. The Florida Turnpike Enterprise would pay a portion of the costs. The credits would come from the Old Florida Mitigation Bank, located south of State Road 52 and east of U.S. 41, adjacent to the Connerton Preserve. The route under review was set aside in a court settlement years ago to mitigate about 200 acres of wetlands lost during construction of the Suncoast Parkway. Opponents of the road extension say the county’s road project violates that agreement. They also maintain the road is meant to encourage new development, and will destroy wildlife habitats. Attorneys for the Save the Serenova Coalition have submitted documents in opposition to Ridge Road. Coalition members have said they would file a lawsuit, if the Army Corps grants the permit.

Military academy appointments include soccer standout By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Growing up, Victoria Mitchell always knew she wanted to serve her country with a career in the military. She’ll soon get the chance, when she’s officially inducted into the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on June 28. The 17-year-old recent Wesley Chapel High School graduate received her official appointment to the Navy in late March — about 10 months after she verbally committed to play soccer there last May and five months after she was nominated for appointment from the 12th Congressional District by U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis. Mitchell is one of six Tampa Bay area students who were nominated and subsequently received appointments to a United States service academy through Bilirakis’ office. The others are: River Ridge High School’s Connor Beckman, United States Military Academy; Mitchell High School’s Austin Jerome, United States Merchant Marine Academy; Clearwater Central Catholic High School’s Annalise Klopfer, United States Naval Academy; Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School’s Dennis Teicher, United States Military Academy; and,Wiregrass Ranch High School’s Payton Wilson, United States Air Force Academy. Mitchell, for one, vividly remembers when her acceptance letter arrived in an email. “I was pretty much overwhelmed with excitement,” Mitchell recalled.“I actually read the email several times and couldn’t believe that, like, I actually got in. I remember showing the email to my dad and being like, ‘Is this for real? This means I’m going straight there?’ I thought I was going to a prep school at this point, so I was kind of down; I didn’t think I was going to get in immediately. I had almost given up hope and then I got that email when I least expected it. I was just overwhelmed, excited — like, it was one of the best days ever.” Each year, members of Congress nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five academies: U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, Maryland; the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado; and, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Connecticut, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

APPLICATIONS FAR EXCEED OPEN SLOTS Appointments by service academies are usually made between January and April, and sometimes as late as May. Congressional service academy nominations don’t always guarantee acceptance. Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the Naval Academy’s “plebe” or freshman class, and each student is required to participate in Plebe Summer. Last year the Academy received more than 16,000 applications for the Class of 2022.

COURTESY OF VICTORIA MITCHELL

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis held an annual reception last month to honor local students who received his nomination and subsequent appointment to a United States service academy. Appointees, pictured from left, Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School’s Dennis Teicher, United States Military Academy; Wesley Chapel High School’s Victoria Mitchell, United States Naval Academy; Wiregrass Ranch High School’s Payton Wilson, United States Air Force Academy; and, River Ridge High School’s Connor Beckman, United States Military Academy.

A 2018 study by the U.S. News and World Report found the U.S. Naval Academy to have an 8 percent acceptance rate — the 12th most selective among all colleges and universities in the United States. Attending a service academy comes with an obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. Each student receives a full scholarship. The application process alone is arduous, Mitchell said, from filling out hundreds of pages of paperwork to undergoing a background check and a physical fitness test. It also requires a series of interviews before a group of retired and active duty service members, which she labeled “probably the most complex part of the application.” Mitchell’s passion for the military traces back to her grandfather, Patrick Mitchell, who served in the Air Force for 24 years. As a young girl, her family would take her to Air Force bases throughout Florida, where she was in awe of “seeing our soldiers in uniform and just everything they stand for.” Mitchell, too, has always considered herself “a patriot at heart.” Said Mitchell,“I love my country, and I’ve always known I wanted to serve my country and protect our land — especially like nowadays with all the controversy going on, there’s a lot of disrespect towards our nation and it kind of motivates me to stand up (and) encourages me to go join our military…” Immediately after induction, Mitchell will report for Plebe Summer, which is designed to help freshman prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy. During this time, plebes have no access to television, movies, the Internet or music, and restricted access to cellphones. They are only permitted to make three calls during the six weeks of Plebe Summer. As the summer progresses, the new midshipmen learn basic skills in seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing, and handling yard patrol craft. Plebes also learn infantry drills and how

to shoot 9-mm pistols and M-16 rifles. Other daily training sessions involve moral, mental, physical or professional development and team-building skills. Activities include swimming, martial arts, basic rock climbing, obstacle, endurance and confidence courses. Forty hours are devoted to the instruction of infantry drill and five formal parades. Mitchell is looking forward to all of it. “I know the summer’s going to be very difficult, very busy,” she said,“but overall, I’m excited for the structure of the academy. “I’m really excited to gear up, do PT (physical training) with the brigades, I’m excited to basically learn to be a soldier, and I’m going to be living that life for the next four years, and they’re grooming me to be the best officer I can for our country, so I’m excited to learn everything over the next couple of years.”

JUGGLING ACADEMY LIFE AND SOCCER Besides handling responsibilities of the service academy life, she’ll also be a member of the Navy women’s soccer team, a Division I program.

Mitchell, a forward, opted to strictly play club soccer her senior year after playing varsity soccer at Wesley Chapel High the past three seasons. Her junior year, she posted a team-leading 34 goals in just 16 games played, earning second-team All-Sunshine Athletic Conference honors. Also throughout high school, Mitchell was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She volunteered for Special Olympics and Relay for Life, and was a youth soccer coach for a local development academy. The Naval Academy was the only school she applied to, after vetting other service academies and what they offered. “It’s a pretty good fit for me,” she said,“because I get to play Division I soccer, go to school and then I also graduate as an officer.” She plans to serve for at least 10 years, noting she also has an interest in entering the aviation field at some point. “I’m going to see where it takes me,” she said of the Naval Academy. ”I know there’s a certain point in the Academy where you can sign on for more years in the service, which I’ll probably do,” she said.

WHAT TREE IS THAT?

Zephyrhills reunion being held for 48th year

CHARLIE BROWN PLAY

It’s an annual reunion that draws people from near and far to celebrate the days they spent in any of Zephyrhills schools, from elementary through high school. Some of those attending the party didn’t attend a Zephyrhills school or work in one, either, but they’re friends or family members of people who did. The gathering is set for June 24, with the doors opening at noon, a covered-dish luncheon served at 1 p.m., and recognitions and announcements made at 2:30 p.m. The event will be at the Zephyrhills Lions Club, 5827 Dean Dairy Road. Everyone is welcome and there’s no admission charge, according to the new release. Of course, donations are accepted and it is a potluck supper. So, those who show up should bring a large food item to share. And, if you’re having trouble thinking about what to bring, organizers say that meat and vegetables are always in short supply. Please bring your dish to share in a disposable container. The reunion association supplies paper plates, napkins, plasticware, cups and iced tea. To help keep things flowing, the association has dropped the registration process that’s been used in the past and there won’t be any door prizes, the news release says. Those who want a name tag can make one to wear. The idea is to maximize the amount of time people have to sit and visit with each other. As usual, recognition will be given to the Oldest Grads, Youngest Grads, and teachers and administrators, past and present. Institute aims to equip students for success in college and life By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The National Hispanic Institute led the International Collegiate World Series at Saint Leo University last week for the second year in a row. The event is the capstone of a series of three programs designed by NHI to help high school students to develop the skills needed to become the next generation of community leaders, said Zachary Gonzalez, associate vice president of the institute. The conference is held annually for high school students from across the United States and from global Latino communities, Gonzalez said. This year, it attracted more than 110 students — traveling from different countries and from across the United States. Saint Leo University picked up the students at the airport, housed them, fed them and provided them a chance to get a taste of life on a college campus. “We are proud to again partner with the National Hispanic Institute for the Collegiate World Series,” Dr. Jeffrey D. Senese, Saint Leo University president, said in a prepared statement. “NHI holds the same values as Saint Leo University—both instill the drive for excellence and encourage respect for all. Saint Leo welcomes learners of all backgrounds. We are excited to welcome these young people to our campus, and help them learn about college life and all that it offers.” The program uses a self-directed, studentcentered learning method that encourages critical thinking. “Every high school program that we have focuses on a different angle of leadership development,” Gonzalez said.“NHI’s mission is to build more community leaders that don’t rely on external forces to guide them. Sometimes they don’t have any prior experiences in working with students of different nationalities, different backgrounds, confronting different cultures, confronting different social environments,” Gonzalez said. “We’re not here to tell them there’s a right or wrong answer. Making sure kids don’t go hungry during summer break By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

For some children, the meals they eat during the school day are their only source of nutrition. So, when schools close for the summer, there’s a chance that they could go hungry. The Summer Break Spot takes aim at that issue. The program, also known as the Summer Food Service Program, is a federal nutrition program operated by schools and local nonprofits to make sure that children have an opportunity to receive meals during the summer months. Through the program, although schools are not in session, there are many places across Pasco County where children under the age of 18 can have a free breakfast, lunch or snack. No application is needed at the sites operated by Pasco County Schools. Any child 18 or younger is eligible for a free meal during serving times. Adults or a responsible teen are asked to accompany the children receiving meals because the school district does not have a

large staff to oversee the program. No transportation is provided to the site. The free breakfast consists of one serving of milk, one serving of a fruit and/or vegetables and one serving of grains. The free lunch includes one serving of milk, one serving of grains and one serving of protein. The free snack includes one serving of milk, one serving of fruits and vegetables, one serving of grains and one 1 serving of protein. Lee Beville, a bus driver who is working in the program for the first year, said he drives a bus to deliver lunch to Pretty Pond and Wire Road, and at Zephyr Park. “The people who come are super appreciative,” he said.“We get a lot of people — they don’t know what they would do if they didn’t have this.” The numbers are going up, said Gail Hohensee, who serves the meals.“It helps them a lot.” The program also operates in Hillsborough County. To find out specifics on when the sites are open and where additional sites are located, visit summerbreakspot.freshfromflorida.com, or go to fns@pasco.k12.fl.us.

Labor laws explained at chamber luncheon By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Navigating wage and hour labor laws can be complicated. The North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce offered a primer on the topic at its monthly economic briefing luncheon at Fox Hollow Golf & Country Club. The guest speaker was Lourdes Bahr, community outreach specialist for the wage and hour division of the United States Department of Labor. Based in Tampa, she travels throughout Central Florida providing federal labor law training. Bahr is an Emory University graduate and former investigator for the labor department’s wage and hour division. She also serves as trainer for new investigators. Good record keeping is the first piece of advice she offered. “Make sure you have good records,” she said. “They are your protection. They are your friend. Make sure you are proactive in checking records.” When the labor department investigates for violations, Bahr said it generally is the result of a complaint from a past or present employee, or maybe a third party. Some investigations also arise based on multiple complaints against a particular industry, she said. Investigations require interviews with employees and review of records, including

time cards and payroll sheets. “It’s always a nuisance when you’re investigated,” Bahr said.“Our staff knows this. We try to be as efficient and helpful as possible.” Bahr said the Tampa office has four technicians available to answer questions about labor laws, if business owners have concerns.“There’s nothing wrong with calling,” she said. Currently the labor department is offering a self-auditing program, known as PAID (Payroll Audit Independent Determination). It began about three months ago, and will continue for another three months, Bahr said. The program offers employees and employers a way to resolve inadvertent violations of overtime and minimum wage. It avoids costs and fees of litigation. However, employers can’t participate if they are in litigation or under current investigation by the labor department. The process requires completion of an application and registering with the labor department. The error can be corrected, and the business owner will have a “clean plate,” Bahr said. So far, not many businesses have applied, but she said,“We want to make sure people have the option to do this. We’re hoping to get some traction with it.” For information on PAID, visit DOL.gov/whd/paid.

Pasco County wins national recognition The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Pasco County will be honored in July for its county administration and management by the National Association of Counties, according to a news release. The county is receiving the national association’s 2018 achievement award for Pasco’s innovative and effective county programs that strengthen services to the communities and residents it serves. County Administrator Dan Biles said, “A big part of my decision to join the Pasco County team was that we are committed to a unique, best-practice infrastructure. Organizational Performance Management gives us a real advantage.” NACo’s annual Achievement Awards program, started in 1970, is designed to recognize county government innovations. Each nominee is judged on its

own merits and not against other applications received. Nationally, awards are given in 18 categories reflecting the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice, county administration, information technology, health, civic engagement and many more. “We are honored that NACo is recognizing Pasco County with another National Achievement award,” Dr. Marc Bellas, the county’s organizational performance management director, said in response to the award. “The work we have done over the past six years is paying off. Our goal is to be high-performing in every aspect of our business to support delivering the best possible service to our citizens,” Bellas added. The national association will recognize award-winning counties at its 2018 Annual Conference and Exposition July 13 through July 16 in Nashville,Tennessee.

While most local airports are regulated by municipalities or aviation authorities, Bauler said North Tampa Aero Park is unique in being privately owned. The Brammer family has owned and operated North Tampa Aero Park for years. But, Bauler said,“They think it’s time to get out of the business, and do something else.” The area has seen a lot of changes since the airport opened in 1975, Bauler said. “When it was originally built, Pasco was a lot more undeveloped,” he said.“Now, you’ve

BUS, from page 1A address traffic gridlock. A decision on bus rapid transit is expected in the coming months. Meanwhile, major stops on HART’s limited express service will include Tampa International Airport, the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, the University Area Transit Center, the Westshore business district, and the Marion Street Transit Center in downtown Tampa. According to a HART news release, residents and businesses, especially in New Tampa and Wesley Chapel, asked for the bus route. It is considered a boon for employees commuting to and from work across county lines, and for area residents who want to visit dining, shopping or entertainment destinations in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. HART estimates about 123,000 residents live within the service area. Transportation from Pasco to the veteran’s hospital in Hillsborough is an especially important benefit to the area, said Kurt Scheible, director of Pasco County Public Transportation (PCPT). “I get requests all the time on how can we get people down to the veteran’s hospital,” Scheible said.“I think this is a great step forward.” The July 1 start is a soft opening, with an official ribbon cutting at Tampa

The flight center offers a range of services, including flight instruction, aircraft sales, instrument proficiency checks, parts sales and biennial flight reviews. It has been a training and teaching resource for the Wesley Chapel Civil Air Patrol. Some hangars are leased, but others are condominium hangars, whose owners are represented by a condominium association. For information, visit CBRE.com.

International Airport scheduled for July 13. HART buses will pick up passengers at the Route 54 bus stop operated by PCPT. The bus stop is located at the Wiregrass Park-n-Ride, at 28222 Willet Way, near Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. The Wiregrass bus stop is the “backbone” of Pasco’s transit system, with the kind of ridership that makes it a perfect fit for HART’s new route, said Scheible. HART’s operating hours will be seven days a week, generally from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with buses leaving hourly. Bus fares will be $2 each way. Free WiFi is available on the bus ride. PCPT’s Route 54 operates only six days a week, with no buses running on Sundays. Weekday hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., for east/west service from Universal Plaza in New Port Richey to Zephyrhills. Major stops are at Medical Center of Trinity, the Shops at Wiregrass and Tampa Premium Outlets. However, the Wiregrass park-n-ride is open seven days a week for residents taking a ride on HART’s buses. New services are coming in the future, including the expansion of Flamingo Fares, a mobile application for regional bus passes, Feigenbaum said. It is available from HART and the PSTA. In the next months, Pasco and Manatee County’s transit systems also will provide the mobile app and regional bus passes. “It will be seamless, built into all the systems,” said Feigenbaum.

Locals well-represented in 2018 MLB Draft By Kevin Weiss

205-pound Sims, who bats left-handed and throws right, hit .250 with 17 hits, nine runs scored, four doubles and four home runs. He also drove in 13 runs while finishing the 2018 season with a .485 slugging percentage and .354 on-base percentage. Meanwhile on the mound, Sims held a 2.35 ERA in six appearances with 10 strikeouts and just four hits allowed. He allowed just two runs in his 7.2 innings of work. Sims is the second Saint Leo player to be drafted by the Padres, joining Darrin Reichie, a fourth-round selection in 1987.

ecoming a professional baseball player will soon be a reality for a handful of athletes with ties to The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. The 2018 Major League Baseball Draft ran from June 4 to June 6 — whereby four locals had their names called. University of North Florida junior righthander Frank German, who grew up in Lutz and graduated from Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, represented the highest local draftee when he was taken in the fourth round (127th overall) by the New York Yankees. German recently signed with the club for a reported bonus of $350,000. German’s college teammate, junior lefty Austin Drury, a Land O’ Lakes native/ Wiregrass Ranch High School product, was also drafted, in the 34th round (1034th overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Meanwhile, a pair of Saint Leo ballplayers also were selected — junior righty/first baseman Jake Sims, in the 31st round (921st overall) by the San Diego Padres; and senior second baseman Zach Scott, in the 32nd round (958th overall) by the Seattle Mariners. Both Sims, who signed with the Padres on June 12 for an undisclosed amount, and Scott helped Saint Leo University to a 38-11 record and a 21-9 mark in the Sunshine State Conference. They respectively join 49 other former Lions who have had their name called for the draft, dating back to 1969. Elsewhere, Saint Leo signee Waylon Richardson was also drafted, in the 40th round (1,187th overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies. Richardson, a 6-foot-5 righty out of Kankakee (Illinois) Community College, opted to sign with the Phillies for an undisclosed amount, forgoing his eligibility to play baseball for Saint Leo. The first-year player draft is Major League Baseball’s primary mechanism for assigning amateur baseball players, from high schools, colleges and other amateur baseball clubs, to its 30 teams — which offer up millions of dollars in signing bonuses to its top draftees. All 30 MLB teams have until July 6 to get 2018 drafted players signed. There were 40 rounds and 1,214 picks in total, during the three-day draft. Players came from across the United States and Canada, from high school and college, and from every position on the diamond. There were players from 47 states taken. Of those picks, 158 were from Florida, second to only California, which yielded 187 selections. Following California and Florida, were Texas (114 draftees), Georgia (65) and North Carolina (49). Last year’s draft was particular fruitful for area talent. Among the 2017 crop were four Steinbrenner High School products — Kevin Merrell (first round), Patrick Morris

(14th round), Josh Falk (17th round) and CJ Van Eyk (19th round); Bishop McLaughlin products Nate Pearson (first round) and Paul Coumoulos (40th round); and Sunlake High School’s Tommy Mace (14th round). Here’s a closer look at the local 2018 MLB draftees:

Game/Rawlings (3rd team), as well as being named an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-South Region (2nd team) selection. Additionally, he was a First-Team AllAtlantic Sun Conference honoree and was named a semifinalist for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation’s top college baseball player. The accomplished thrower has a threepitch arsenal, which includes a 90-mph to-94-mph fastball, along with a curveball and changeup — which some draft experts say projects him as an end-of-the-rotation starter at the next level. As a high school senior, German earned 3A All-State honors and helped guide Bishop McLaughlin to the State Final Four.

FRANK GERMAN, RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER (New York Yankees-fourth round, 127th overall) HOMETOWN: Lutz/Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School COLLEGE: University of North Florida As a fourth round selection, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound righty became the highest-drafted pitcher in North Florida program history, which previously never had an arm drafted within the top five rounds. This past season, German went 8-3, posting a team-leading 1.58 earned run average and 108 strikeouts in 91.1 innings. He allowed one or fewer earned runs in 11 of his 14 starts, while notching six or more strikeouts in 13 contests. He also allowed just 14 walks and held opponent bats to just a .190 average. German picked up All-American honors from D1Baseball (2nd team) and Perfect

JAKE SIMS, RIGHT-HANDED PITCHER/FIRST BASEMAN (San Diego Padres—31st round, 921st overall) HOMETOWN: Guelph, Ontario, Canada COLLEGE: Saint Leo University Sims proved himself a capable two-way player for Saint Leo in his first and only season with the club, coming from Roane State Community College in Tennessee. At the plate for the Lions, the 6-foot-2,

ZACH SCOTT, SECOND BASEMAN (Seattle Mariners—32nd round, 958th overall) HOMETOWN: Scottsdale, Arizona COLLEGE: Saint Leo University The 6-foot, 185-pound Scott was a mainstay at second the past two seasons for Saint Leo after transferring from Colorado Christian University. He wrapped up the 2018 campaign with a .312/.570/.385 slash line, recording 58 hits on the year with 12 doubles, six triples and eight home runs, while scoring 45 runs and driving in 42 RBI in all 49 games. Defensively, Scott posted a .947 fielding percentage with 85 putouts and 131 assists while turning 27 double plays. He’s now one of three former Lions to get drafted by the Mariners, joining Daniel Torres (2013) and Taylor Perez (2015), all infielders.

AUSTIN DRURY, LEFT-HANDED PITCHER (Los Angeles Dodgers- 34th round, 1034th overall) HOMETOWN: Land O’ Lakes/Wiregrass Ranch High School COLLEGE: University of North Florida A former A-SUN All-Freshman and Freshman All-American, the 5-foot-11, 175pound lefty had a slightly down showing in 2018, finishing with a 4-4 record in 13 starts with a 4.85 ERA, recording 58 strikeouts in 68.2 innings of work and holding opponent’s to a .258 batting average. Yet, his past success and potential as a southpaw is likely what intrigued pro scouts to call his name late in the draft. In 2017, as a sophomore, Drury went 6-2 with a 2.43 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 74.1 innings, holding opponents to a .231 batting average. Should Drury sign with the Dodgers, he’ll achieve a rare designation as a thirdgeneration professional baseball player. His uncle, Ronald Kelly, and grandfather, Roy Kelly, both played in the minors. Prior to college, Drury was a four-year member of the Wiregrass Ranch High School baseball team. His senior year he earned First-Team All-Pasco honors as the Bulls’ top batter (.380) and pitcher (1.83 earned run average). He was also teammates with his older brother, Zach, at both Wiregrass Ranch and North Florida.

The Land O’ Lakes Gators Athletics Foundation inducted five new members to the school’s athletics Hall of Fame during a dinner ceremony last month. The inductees for the 2018 class were: William Gebauer, a longtime administrator and varsity coach for football, track and wrestling; Jeff Hendrix, a three-sport athlete from 1979 to 1981 who became the first Land O’ Lakes football player to receive a Division I scholarship; Don Meredith, a three-year letterman in football and wrestling from 1988 to 1990 who later became a standout offensive lineman at the University of North Carolina; Dr. Kirk Peterson, a three-sport standout in soccer, football and track in the late ’80s; and Karla Walsh Graziano, a three-sport athlete from 1979 to 1981 in volleyball, basketball and track, where she qualified for the state meet and set the school’s jump record. Ginny Geiger delivers a high-energy lesson on the importance of bees.

Buzzin’ about bees at the Hugh Embry Library By Christine Holtzman Special to The Laker/Lutz News

G

inny Geiger, a member of the Dade City Garden Club, delivered an entertaining and informative program on the importance of bees at the Hugh Embry Library. Geiger led the “Nature Detectives Bee Workshop,” dispensing information and, at one point, demonstrating how a bee might act, if a wasp — an enemy of the bee — approached the hive. In her hour-long workshop, Geiger talked about the importance of bees as pollinators. The western honey bee, according to the University of Florida, IFAS Extension, is conceivably the most important pollinator in Florida and American

Agricultural landscapes. Bees are critical to the food chain, and without them much of the fruits and vegetables at local supermarkets would disappear. Besides talking about the importance of bees, Geiger also gave the children a chance to try their hand at making a bee. The workshop, held during National Garden Week, was sponsored by the Dade City Garden Club, in coordination with the Hugh Embry Library. The program was first developed by the St.Augustine Garden Club and is recognized by the American Library Association. Everyone who took part received a bee swag bag — containing things to do, fun facts, a packet of flower seeds, honey samples and a copy of the book “You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Bees.”

Deborah Roberts, of Zephyrhills, helps her grandson, 5-year-old Kaeden Roberts, construct a model bee during one of the hands-on activities given recently at the Nature Detectives Bee Workshop at the Hugh Embry Library. Deborah says that her grandson loves nature and was excited to attend the workshop. Seven-year-old Annabelle Harris, of Dade City, and her brother, 9-year-old Anderson, construct their model bees during a hands-on activity at the Nature Detectives program. Pasco County participants ages 9 through 12 are eligible to apply for a scholarship for a one-week paid nature camp at Camp Wekiva, near Orlando, in 2019.

With her model bee in hand, 9-year-old Glorie Todd, of Dade City, listens to instructor Ginny Geiger as she speaks about the next activity, which will be sampling honey.

Three-year-old Miguel Alvarez, of Dade City, proudly shows off his bee that he made during the workshop.

Water play Eddy Miranda, from Asbel Creek in Land O’ Lakes, took this diving dolphin shot off Anclote Key in the Tarpon Springs area. Miranda also captured this photo of an underwater manatee in Homossassa Springs.

DID YOU KNOW? Readers can now find Pets of the Week and Local Wildlife photos on our website at LakerLutznews.com, under the Pets/Wildlife link. A slithering reptile Sandra Vann, of Lutz, saw this yellow rat snake crawling up a tree and snapped the photo from the boardwalk at Lettuce Lake Park in Tampa. Reptiles are cold-blooded animals that raise their body temperature by lying in the sun or lower it by crawling into the shade.

Mandy is a survivor Mandy is a champion Australian Shepherd and was rescued when she was 9 months old. Mandy was beaten and abused if she barked or wanted to play. Her previous owner gave her limited food and water, and no toys. A neighbor convinced the man to give Mandy a chance at freedom. Bob Halczyn’s puppy needed a playmate, so when the puppy's trainer told him Mandy’s story, he knew he had to make room for her in his family’s home and hearts. Today, Mandy is spoiled a little, eats well and plays in the yard. She loves her stuffed animals, daily walks, training and cuddling at night with her mommy. Mandy enjoys being part of the Halczyn family, of Wesley Chapel, who are blessed to have adopted such a sweet, beautiful, kind fur-baby.

PET PAWS NATIONAL PET FIRE SAFETY DAY Just like fire drills, pets need consideration when preparing for unexpected fire emergencies. National Pet Fire Safety Day is observed annually on July 15. Taking precautions now can both save your home and your pet. Pet fire safety tips: • Extinguish open flames. Pets are curious and not cautious. Wagging tails can knock over candles. Cats can paw at sizzling grease. • Remove knobs from the stove when not in use, so they will not accidentally get turned on. • Consider flameless candles and backup lighting in the event of a power outage. • Replace glass water bowls with metal or plastic. Glass bowls, when placed outside on wooden decks, can heat up and start a fire. • Have leashes and collars stored near the entrance to your home. When away, have your pets in the main living area for easy rescue. • Secure young pets when away from home. Pet kennels or pet-proofed rooms are options. • Fire alert window clings can help firefighters identify a room a pet is located in and identify the number of pets in a home.

Add a cling to the window of the room pets are kept in while you are away. Keep it updated with the number of pets that reside with you and your current phone number. • Have a plan when you are at home. Know which family members will be responsible for each pet. Pet owners can put these tips into practice and have a fire drill to keep your pets, and your humans, safe. For more information, visit NationalCalendarDay.com.

SHARE YOUR PET NEWS If you have pet news about adoptions, walks or other events for pet owners and their pets, you can let us know by sending us an email. We just need the basics: who, what, when, where and why. The information should be submitted two weeks prior to the desired publication date. We also need a contact name and number, in case we have questions. There is no guarantee of publication, but we consider each item we receive. If you’d like to make a submission, send it to news@lakerlutznews.com. Readers can now find Pets of the Week and Local Wildlife photos on our website at LakerLutznews.com, under the Pets/Wildlife link.

PUT YOUR PET IN THE SPOTLIGHT! We are looking for photos and information on your favorite pet. Include in your short story your pet’s name, age, breed, and anything else you would like to mention. Don’t forget to include the owner’s name and city of residence! Send photo and information to:
