Serving up food and kindness By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

It’s not uncommon for generous acts to surface during the holiday, especially charitable gestures for those who are less fortunate. But, when you have a group that guarantees a hot plate every Sunday throughout the year, that’s not such a common thing. That’s precisely what an organization

called Love One Another has been doing for 10 years. The ministry serves meals every Sunday at the Pasco County Nutrition Center, 13853 15th St., in Dade City. It feeds whomever walks through the door. Lucy Avila helped to found Love One Another. She said it all began with a simple idea brought up during a staff meeting at the

First Baptist Church, where she attends. Initially, it was a program aimed at feeding only the homeless. Flyers were placed around the city to get the word out. In the beginning, organizers planned for 100 people, but only 10 showed up. The First Baptist Church supplied and prepared the meals for the first five months, See KINDNESS, page 19A

Burgess’ departure will trigger a special election By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis has announced his recommendation of state Rep. Danny Burgess to serve as the state’s next executive director of Florida’s Department of Veterans Affairs. If his appointment is confirmed, Burgess will have to resign from his District 38 seat in the Florida House of Representatives. “It’s bittersweet,” Burgess said, noting the appointment “is completely unexpected and not something I sought out.” But he added, receiving the call from DeSantis regarding the opportunity to serve in the new capacity was humbling, See BURGESS, page 19A

The Metropolitan Planning Organization heard a report about the Wesley Chapel Roadway Connection project — along with pros and cons on various aspects of potential roadway connections during the board’s Dec. 13 meeting. The presentation was for information only, with no action taken by the board. Meghan McKinney, of the AECOM organization, has been collaborating with the MPO to conduct studies on the pros and cons of potential connections. The project is focused on three potential connections: • Mansfield Boulevard and Kinnan Street • Meadow Pointe Boulevard and Meadow Pointe Boulevard Extension • Wyndfields Boulevard and Wyndfields Boulevard Extension Public workshops have been held, as part of the study, in both April 2017 and May 2018. “The reasons we wanted to do this study is we wanted to get public input, to hear if views have changed,” McKinney said. In general, it’s a consensus in the community that the area’s roads can’t handle the current traffic demands, and there are especially concerns about safety near schools, she said. Of all three potential connections, the most controversial involves a possible link between Mansfield Boulevard and Kinnan Street. In a 2017 survey, 36 people said they favored the connection, while 37 people were opposed. Several alternatives are being considered, McKinney said. McKinney also told board members that regardless of which alternative is selected, the area’s traffic projections for 2040 reveals significant traffic increases. “Basically you have an area where just by connecting the road, you’re not neces-

sarily adding more people to the area,” she reasoned. “You’re just shifting the routes they may use.” However, the projection also showed that the No Build Alternative would have its greatest increase near Beardsley Drive and Mansfield Boulevard. The alternative’s biggest decrease in traffic would occur on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard between County Line Road and Cross Creek Boulevard, she said. Aside from the road connection proposed, McKinney also addressed several planned improvements, including additional traffic lights and turning lanes. One plan addresses concerns about traffic near schools on Mansfield Boulevard. The bus drop-off and pick-up area near See STUDY, page 19A

ALTERNATIVES • No Build Alternative: Would have no connections for public use but only provide a gate for emergency vehicles, and would make accommodations for cyclists and pedestrians • Alternative 1: Would focus on connecting Mansfield Boulevard and Kinnan Street • Alternative 2: Would focus on the Mansfield Boulevard/Kinnan Street and Meadow Pointe Boulevard Extension • Alternative 3: Meadow Pointe Boulevard Extension • Alternative 4: Mansfield Boulevard/Kinnan Street, Meadow Pointe Boulevard and Wyndfields Boulevard Extension

County continues pursuit of Ridge Road Extension By Brian Fernandes

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County is continuing its pursuit of a project to allow the extension of Ridge Road, and Sam Beneck, the county’s project manager, gave a briefing on the status during a Dec. 12 luncheon meeting of the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. “We are currently in the design and permitting phase,” said Beneck. “We have not started any construction activities,” he told members and guests during the luncheon at the Fox Hollow Golf Club in Trinity. The planned 9-mile project will be broken into two phases, the project manager said. Phase 1 would stretch from Moon Lake Road in New Port Richey heading east to the Suncoast Parkway. Phase 2 would run from the Suncoast Parkway to U.S. 41, in Land O’ Lakes. The duration for the first phase is expected to be three years, but the county hopes to shorten that. The U.S.Army Corps of Engineers views it as one project, and the funds for the phases will be allocated separately. The first phase is estimated at $67.8 million. The second phase has not yet been funded. A Suncoast Parkway interchange also is being considered. The design for that project is expected to cost $1 million, with funding from the Florida Turnpike Enterprise. “In prior years, we have expended almost $20 million on this project,” Beneck ex-

plained.“That includes land acquisition, a fair amount of design and redesign.” He emphasized that in working with the Corps of Engineers, the county vigorously sought the alternative that is cost efficient, while improving mobility and reducing hurricane evacuation time. Replacing roadside slopes with walls and pedestrian rails is being considered, he said. The project manager also said the county has been working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reduce impacts to the environment. Pasco County and the Corps of Engineers

came to a consensus in 2017 on an approach called Modified Alternative 7 as the least environmentally damaging option. It calls for partially elevating the Ridge Road Extension. According to a traffic analysis survey, Modified Alternative 7 would also increase traffic flow and reduce evacuation time. Under the plan, 16 bridges would be added in sensitive areas, as well as curbs and guardrails. Specialized fencing also will be installed in areas where animals are most likely to frequent.

The county also would provide $3.2 million in compensation for environmental impacts during Phase 1. The county also is collaborating with Duke Energy to design a new trailhead with parking and to provide access to existing hiking trails within the Serenova Preserve. The county expects a permit decision by the Corps of Engineers by September 2019. While the county continues to press forward on its efforts, the project continues to meet resistance. Two of those opponents spoke at the Pasco County Commission’s Dec. 11 meeting. Dan Callaghan, a long-time critic of the Ridge Road Extension, said that contrary to the county’s claims, the project is being pursued to promote development, not to improve hurricane evacuation. He said the county wants to nibble to death its preserve areas and “slash our wild places to death, by a thousand cuts.” Clay Colson, who also opposes the Ridge Road Extension, urged commissioners to protect the county’s preserves. “You know preserve is something that means we’re going to keep it for our future generations,” Colson said. Instead of extending Ridge Road through the Serenova Preserve, Colson said the county should extend Connerton Boulevard to the Suncoast Parkway. Staff writer B.C. Manion contributed to the report.

Commissioners urge against ‘celebratory’ gunfire The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The Hillsborough County Commission is urging residents to refrain from ‘celebratory gunfire’ to bring in the New Year. It is illegal to fire a gun in the air in Hillsborough County, and it can be lethal or can cause injuries, according to a news release from Hillsborough County Commission Chairman Lesley “Les” Miller Jr.’s office. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that more than three

quarters of celebratory gunfire injuries are to the head, shoulders and feet, the release says. “We have a lot to celebrate during the holidays because we live in such a wonderful community,” Miller said, in the release. “We do not need to ruin somebody else’s holiday with reckless behavior like celebratory gunfire.” Last year, for instance, a guest at Busch Gardens was stuck by a bullet that had been shot in the air miles away from the park, according to the release.

This fair was a showcase of ideas — turned into inventions By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Students at John Long Middle School recently transformed the school’s cafeteria and gymnasium into a venue where students showed off inventions they created, based on their ideas. The school’s Maker Mania community night was inspired by the concept of Maker Faire, an international movement which encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to produce something unique of their own. John Long Middle was the first public school in Pasco County to have such a fair, last year, and it was so successful that this year, the school invited the community — as well as the students’ families — to come take a look. There was plenty to see. Throughout the cafeteria and gymnasium, long rows of booths showcased creations from 76 students, in sixth through eighth grades. As people stopped by, students explained what they had made and demonstrated how it works. “The focus is to learn how to do something they didn’t already know how to do,” explained Darcy Cleek, a science teacher at John Long. Students are taught about the process of engineering, but they also learn how to market their products, Cleek said. Eleven-year-old Ava Krutulis, for instance, had a booth displaying her name brand ‘AK Toys,’ which she came up with using her initials. As part of her brand, she presented her blue robotic snake to viewers. The snake’s head, body and pointy tail were carefully shaped and constructed from pieces of plastic — held together with toothpicks, beads, hot glue and thumb tacks. Ava explained the source of inspiration for her project: “My sister really wanted a snake, but we can’t (have one).” Her mother, Gina, chuckled recalling her response to the request for a real pet snake: “Mom said no,” she said. Ava decided to make the next best thing. During her demonstration, the toy snake twisted and slid across the floor with the help of a battery-operated motor. Down the hall in the gymnasium, Isabel Martinez, 11, displayed her homemade lava lamp. The sixth-grader said the idea caught her eye while she was doing research on Google. Soda bottles containing water and oil were each placed on light pads so there would be a glow on the inside. Her booth had instructional poster boards, and she explained how the lava lamp works, while demonstrating. “Vegetable oil and water don’t mix, so when I put the Alka-Seltzer in, the water reacts and pushes it up towards the oil,” she said. Along with the tablets, Isabel dropped in food coloring, creating an even more interesting visual. Next to Isabel stood Breanna Martin whose project used different colors of water, released through syringes, to move a hydraulic arm up, down or forward. The 13-year-old said her father who works in construction, and with hydraulic equipment, helped her with her project. Besides learning how water pressure works, she also learned how to advertise, she said. “This would help manufacturers,” she added. “Before you have to present something on what you want to build, you have to show them a diagram.” Back in the cafeteria, 11-year-old Logan Cantele displayed something similar, but more computerized. “I have a claw machine that moves on wheels,” he stated.“It’s a reliable source.” The Claw Rider runs on four motors to help move it up, down, to spin and clench small objects. Using an app on his tablet and a remote control, Logan demonstrated how the claw could pick up a ball and place it inside a cup.

CHRISTINE HOLTZMAN

Eleven-year-old Logan Cantele rolls out his remote-controlled Clawrider robot, which is capable of moving and picking up items.

Eighth-grader Breanna Martin, 13, shows how a hydraulic arm she made is powered by water. Each syringe of colored water represents a different command that the arm is able to perform. Using household ingredients, such as bottled water, vegetable oil, food coloring and AlkaSeltzer tablets, 11year-old Isabel Martinez, shows off a colorful lava lamp she created to demonstrate at Mania Maker Night.

Eleven-year-old Naomi Gibson sits behind her ‘Tide Killer Shark,’ a device designed to eliminate red tide.

Eleven-year-old Sylvana Armstrong uses a remote control to change the colors of the LED lights on her Bluetooth stereo speaker project that she named the ‘Alien Party Time Music Box.’

Eleven-year-old Brooke Wheatley demonstrates how her project, a dance shoe dryer and deodorizer, can fix stinky shoes in 15 minutes by using rice, scented oils and a fan.

The sixth-grader was compelled to create the machine because his late great-grandmother once had limited mobility. “What I have here is something that can help someone that can’t walk or can’t really do much,” he said. When asked if his project helped him develop a greater appreciation for science, he replied,“you bet it does – especially the engineering part.” Sylvana Armstrong, a sixth-grader, made what is essentially a music box. She redesigned a portable speaker with painted cardboard – an Alien Party Time Music Box. She demonstrated with a Bluetooth how to connect her phone to the portable speaker. As she pulled up a music video on YouTube, she could watch the visual and pace around while getting amplified sound at a distance from the speaker. She said she wanted her project to be unique, and she said, overall, being involved in Maker Mania has helped her to become more creative. The faculty at John Long didn’t set out to have the students compete with one anoth-

er, but to learn the fundamentals of being an inventor. “The things that you can’t get away from [are] critical thinking and problem solving,” Cleek said.

“That’s at the heart of what this whole thing’s about.” As Cleek surveyed the booths and the crowds of students, she said the sight makes her feel hopeful about the future.

Richard Corcoran is new state education commissioner By B.C. Manion

At Obstetrics and Gynecology of Trinity our skilled and friendly team provides high quality, comprehensive and personalized medical care for women in all stages of life. Services include routine gynecological and pregnancy care, family planning and surgical procedures. Our physicians are especially skilled in the areas of minimally invasive surgical procedures, including those utilizing the daVinci robot.

Richard Corcoran is Florida’s new Commissioner of Education. Corcoran was selected unanimously for the position by the State Board of Education at its Dec. 17 meeting. In a news release about the appointment, Richard Corcoran said,“I look forward to working with the Board to ensure students and their families are empowered to take control of their education options, more resources are directed to Florida’s classrooms and all students have high-performing educators. Gov.-elect Ron DeSantis set strong expectations for education in Florida, and I look forward to working with our state’s education stakeholders and the Florida Legislature to ensure Florida’s students have the greatest chance at lifelong success.” Corcoran, a veteran and an attorney, served for eight years in the Florida House of Representatives and served as Speaker of the House from 2016 to 2018. As a legislator, he advocated for the Schools of Hope program, which serves students in persistently low-performing schools; the establishment of the Hope Scholarship to help bullied students; and the Best and Brightest Scholarship Program, to reward and recruit quality educators. Under the Florida Constitution, the State Board of Education is responsible for appointing the commissioner of education. State Board of Education Chair Marva Johnson said,“Richard Corcoran has a strong

Richard Corcoran

leadership record. He is the best leader to ensure a smooth transition and to identify opportunities to accelerate progress along the way,” according to the release.“He brings with him a passion for providing Floridians access to the world-class education options they deserve and being a good steward of taxpayer dollars. I am confident he will be critical to keeping Florida’s education system moving in the right direction.” Other state board of education members also spoke highly of Corcoran’s appointment to the post, including, Gary Chartrand who said Corcoran “has a well-deserved reputation for advocating intensely on behalf of Florida’s students and their families. I have been outspoken about parents’ right to choose the best school for their children’s individual needs, and he will play a pivotal role in maintaining the positive momentum we have built around school choice in Florida.”

We are located on the campus of Medical Center of Trinity, just 15 minutes west of the Suncoast Expressway on State Road 54.

Bexley Residents Stay Healthy In The Sunshine

M

ost weekday mornings you can find Bernie Schmitt working out in the fitness center at The Bexley Club. Spending time on the recumbent bicycle and rowing machine helps keep his body flexible and staves off the occasional arthritis pain he feels, after undergoing several back surgeries. Schmitt and his wife moved to Florida to retire about a year and a half ago. “We came down to stay healthy in the sunshine and see the grandkids,” said Schmitt, whose three sons live nearby. One of the factors that drew the active couple to purchase their home in Bexley, Pasco County’s award-winning master-planned community, is how convenient it is to exercise right within the neighborhood. Set on 1,825 acres of land, Bexley was designed so that residents could enjoy the great outdoors and Tampa Bay’s spectacular weather yearround. The heart of the community is The Bexley Club with a resort-style pool, separate heated lap pool, open-air game room, playground, and cardio-focused, state-of-the-art fitness center. The Bexley Club is also home to the Twisted Sprocket Café, which is open to the public. It’s the perfect

place to enjoy an after-workout smoothie or coffee, along with an outstanding menu of breakfast items, gourmet lunches, craft beer and wine. Bernie and his wife also enjoy the miles of multi-surface trails developed by fitness pioneer Avid Trails™. Designed to encourage residents to get fit while getting back to nature that is easily accessible from nearly every home, Bexley’s trails are

ideal for walking, biking, jogging and strollers. Along the way, exercisers can use 10 separate Fit Stations, which add fun and variety to workouts. The popular Bootcamp Loop offers exercisers a complete circuit-training workout along the trail. When complete, Bexley will have more than 10 miles of trails meandering throughout the community. With so many bikers in the com-

munity, it’s the perfect location for Suncoast Trailside Bicycles, which opened its second location within Bexley. The shop provides tune-ups, repairs, sales, and test rides for residents and visitors. One of the most popular bicycles being offered are battery-powered ebikes, which let users pedal on their own, or turn on the battery when they need some extra assistance. The staff at the bike shop also assists with BMX bike clinics at Bexley’s very own Mud, Sweat and Gears park, which features a unique BMX pump track. “We designed Bexley to be a community that makes it easy for residents to get outside and live an active lifestyle,” said Pam Parisi, vice president of marketing for Newland Communities, the developer of Bexley. “Residents can enjoy the beautiful scenery, acres of nature preserves and the vibrant, social atmosphere that Bexley offers.” Located in Land O’ Lakes along State Road 54 just east of the Suncoast Parkway, Bexley has earned numerous awards, including best master-planned community and best recreational facility from the Southeast Building Conference, and a Best in American Living Award for best single-family community from the National Association of Home Builders. To learn more about all that Bexley has to offer, visit BexleyFlorida.com.

There’s nothing better than living g in Bexley. Is Buying A Home Right For You?

M

any millennials are buying their first home in a marketplace that is more challenging than the one their parents encountered when they bought their first home. Interest rates are on the rise, and home prices are, too. The good news is that there are still lots of reasons why buying a home makes sense for many young adults.

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: • Do the math. Purchasing a home can be cheaper over the long term than renting, even though there may are upfront costs before closing on that new home. Consider the cost of rent, insurance and annual rent increases against your monthly loan payment, along with how long you plan to stay in the home. • Know that a home is an asset that may appreciate in value. If market conditions are good, the longer you stay in the property and makes payments, the more equity

you build. However, when you rent, monthly payments go to the landlord and there is no opportunity to build equity. • Don’t let the down payment be a deterrent. Lenders offer a conventional fixed-rate loan for first-time homebuyers that allow buyers to get into a home with as little as 3 percent down. • Consider the intangible benefits of owning. Are you someone who likes to plant flowers or choose paint colors and floor coverings? Do you have kids and pets who need a backyard? Do you want to get to know your neighbors? Owning a house can offer all these benefits, and more. Deciding whether to buy a home is a big decision for many millennials. Potential buyers should understand and consider all the financial options available when purchasing a home.

Cardel Homes Expands At Bexley New models and large homesites

C

hoosing the right home and community are two of the biggest decisions you’ll make when buying a new home. Not only do you want you a community that gives your family plenty of ways to enjoy a wide range of activities and amenities, you’ll also want a builder whose floorplans and home features meet your family’s needs and exceeds your quality expectations. You’ll find this perfect combination with a new home built by Cardel Homes in Bexley. This master-planned community developed by Newland Communities in Land O’ Lakes is located north of State Road 54 at the Suncoast Parkway — a prime location that is convenient to many areas of Tampa Bay. Bexley is known for its unique amenities, excellent schools and preserved wilderness with 13 miles of planned hiking and biking trails. Cardel Homes is one of several builders in Bexley, and has been in the community since it opened in the Fall of 2016. “We have been one of Bexley’s most successful builders, selling all but our model home during its first phase, and recently moving to Bexley’s second phase with two new models,” said Brian Phillips, Vice President of sales and marketing at Cardel Homes. Cardel Homes is one of Bexley’s premium builders and offers buyers some of the community’s largest homesites, many with pristine conservation views. Its homes are built on 70-foot lots, with sizes ranging from 2,507 to 3,939 square feet, and prices beginning in the $390,000s. “Our homes offer, as standard, many exclusive features that other builders sell as upgrades,” said Phillips. “This means dollar for dollar, you get more with Cardel Homes because we put the most popular features that buyers want in the base price of our homes.” “We give our buyers many selections to choose from, including 11

different styles of cabinets, 20 flooring options and 12 countertop choices,” said Jeffrey Lorenzo, who heads up Cardel’s sales at Bexley. “Our buyers love that they have so many choices in the base pricing, which means they typically spend less at the design center than they would with other builders.” Customers also appreciate Cardel’s flexibility and ability to make changes.“I listen closely to what my buyers want and work closely with them all the way through the buying process,” said Lorenzo. “Because we are flexible, we are able to make changes that many national builders are not able to do.” Another unique feature that Cardel offers is its large selection of one-story floorplans.“Families of all ages prefer living in a one-story home,” said Phillips, who adds that 90 percent of the homes Cardel sells are one-story floor plans. “We have refined our one-story plans to meet the demands and desires of families of all sizes —couples with schoolaged children, empty nesters wanting a beautiful home to entertain, and retirees looking to build their dream

home to spend their retirement years.” One of Cardel’s models at Bexley is the Henley, a new floorplan the company designed for families who love to entertain and want very open living spaces. “The Henley offers our biggest great room and biggest bonus room,” said Phillips. “At almost 4,000 square feet, it’s a lot of house for the money, and one of the best values we offer.” The Henley model features five bedrooms and four bathrooms with a 26 x 23 great room and 20.4 x 28 great room. Cardel’s other model home, the Savannah, is a versatile four-bedroom, three-bathroom home with 3,308 square feet. Both homes have three-car garages. Cardel’s phase one Bexley model home is currently for sale fully-furnished at the reduced price of $749,990. “This home has over $200,000 in upgrades, and is a tremendous value for a family wanting to move now,” said Phillips. Visit Cardel Homes at Bexley, Mondays through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.

Count on Cornerstone Pros For All Home Maintenance Needs

L

ocal residents have counted on Cornerstone Pros for their air conditioning service since 2006, and many of these customers now turn to the Land O’ Lakes company for their electrical and plumbing needs. “We expanded into electrical and plumbing several years ago because our customers kept asking if we could help them with other home services,” said Dana Spears, founder and president of the company. “They trusted us and were comfortable having us in their homes, and we wanted to accommodate them.” Today Cornerstone Pros is the only residential HVAC company in central Pasco to offer homeowners one-stop shopping and service for air conditioning, heating, plumbing and electrical services. There are many advantages to using Cornerstone for ongoing maintenance of your home’s primary mechanical systems. 1. Every employee passes a stringent background check and drug tests before they are allowed to enter your home. “We hire people who are genuine, honest, trustworthy, clean-cut and live their life with good ethics and morals,” said Spears. “Most employees are local people who live in our service area, and they are very committed to their work and community.” 2. All technicians have the appropriate certifications and licenses. “All of our technicians are specialists who have specific, ongoing training in their fields,” said Dana. “This means our A/C guys are experts at air conditioning, and they only go out on HVAC calls. Our licensed electricians and plumbers are assigned specifically for electrical and plumbing work. There is no cross over between the trades — your technician is always qualified to diagnosis your problem, recommend a solution and qualified to do

the work to meet the industry’s highest standards.” 3. Cornerstone warrantees all of its work, and the company’s satisfaction guaranteed policy applies to every job. “We have a dedicated team of experienced technicians who follow up on any warranty problem. There is no charge for this service, and the tech keep coming back until the problem is 100 percent resolved,” explains Spears. 4. Cornerstone maintains a customer database of all work completed on your home, similar to the historical data your automotive dealership maintains on your vehicle. “Our database is continually updated, so we always know what and when a service was completed, and what parts were ordered,” said Spears. “Having the history of your

home’s maintenance for A/C, electrical and plumbing all at one place is a tremendous convenience for homeowners, especially for those who do not keep detailed records and files.” 5. Preventative maintenance is essential to keep your home’s systems in proper working order so they don’t stop working when you need them most — such as the hottest day of the year, or when you have visitors staying with you. “We have very affordable residential maintenance packages, which range from $15/month for one service area, to just $24/month for all three — HVAC, electrical and plumbing,” said Spears. 6. Customers with maintenance agreements are preferred customers, which means they get service first at a discounted price. “When you have an emergency at your home, you are a priority client

and we send a technician to your home first,” said Spears. 7. Cornerstone recently opened a 6,000 square-foot warehouse so that techs have everything they need when they go on a service call. “Every morning our vans are fully stocked with everything our technicians need, which means on most calls, we will be able to solve a customer’s problem on the first visit,” said Spears. In addition to air conditioning, electrical and plumbing services, Cornerstone also provides customers with portable and whole-house generators, and is one of largest Generac distributors in the region. It is also the exclusive distributor for Westinghouse Progressive Series of water treatment equipment, which works around the clock to provide your home with refined, clean soft water. Clothes and linens will be softer, brighter and last longer, and your plumbing fixtures, dishwasher and refrigerator will be free of water spots, scaling and soap scum. Cornerstone, which has 65 employees and a fleet of 35 trucks, always strives to go above and beyond customer expectations. Phones are answered 24/7, and technicians are available around the clock, including weekends and holidays “We are successful because we’ve built our business on reputation and trust,” said Dana. “We always stand behind the work of our employees, and everyone of our employees strive to make customers happy every day.”

Maximize Your Outdoor Space For Florida Living

I

f you’re looking for a new Florida home, consider how you’ll use an outdoor living space, how you’ll maintain it and how to budget for it. Whether it’s a classic covered lanai or a gourmet outdoor kitchen, be sure you create space to enjoy the fresh Florida air.

LIGHT A FIRE The cooler months are perfect for a toasty fire pit or outdoor fireplace. Not only do they allow your family and guests to linger longer outside, they’re great for roasting marshmallows and assembling s’mores.

REALLY LIVE OUTDOORS Regardless of the size of your outdoor space, think of it as a true living room. Use comfortable seating and enough tables to capture drinks and books. Ottomans also provide convenient landing spots, and today’s hardy outdoor fabrics and furnishings keep it all looking good year-round.

MAKE IT EASY TO GET OUTSIDE Eliminate indoor obstacles to your outdoor living space. Track the clearest footpaths from your indoor spaces to your outdoor space, then make sure they’re easy to use. For example, the refrigerator door — when open — shouldn’t impede someone’s route to a patio entrance. Also consider decorating your outdoor space similarly to your indoor living space. Complementary design becomes an unspoken extension and invitation.

LIGHT IT UP Be both practical and fun when lighting an outdoor living area. Sconces and recessed lighting are good options, but so is candlelight, in combination with electrical lighting. Try clustering scented candles — all shapes and sizes — down the center of an outdoor dining or coffee table. Non-electrified sconces and chande-

liers also lend an atmospheric brightness. Don’t forget to illuminate your exterior — those floodlights beaming up palm tree trunks make a statement. So does the glow from your pool lights.

Use your planters to enhance the decor of your outdoor living space. And, if you’re an enthusiastic outdoor chef, tend your own potted herbs, steps away.

NEVER TOO MANY PLANTERS

EXERCISE CREATIVITY UNDERFOOT

You live in a subtropical paradise, so pile on the plants! Go for classic terra cotta containers and greenery, or a courtyard garden teeming with colorful hibiscus, geraniums or bougainvillea.

How will you pave your outdoor living space? If it’s smooth, burnished concrete, try weatherproof rugs as accents. If you prefer something

dramatic, use pavers to build a permanent rug. Whatever your exterior flooring choice — bricks, pavers, stones or tiles, to name a few — creativity is another way to enhance the outdoor living experience. Ready to live the Florida lifestyle outdoors? Then don’t forget to include your outdoor living space in your planning. Courtesy of ICI Homes

Home Design Ideas Trending In 2019

U

sher in the new year with inspiring fresh ideas across home design. To help you keep up with the latest décor trends, celebrity interior designer, Taniya Nayak, has pulled together the top five home design trends for 2019 to provide inspiration, no matter your personal taste. 1. Natural and Organic. Bring a touch of Mother Nature into your home with this trend that accentuates earthy, organic elements. Nayak recommends adding layers of textures, like natural raw jute, and incorporating muted tones, such as terra cotta, moss green or mustard, to achieve this nature-inspired style. 2. Feminine and Free. This style embraces a pastel palette of pale blue, pink and cream to achieve a romantic and glamorous look. Infuse this trend into your space by creating a striped accent wall with soft-hued tones or alternate different paint finishes, such as eggshell and satin, in the same color for a dimensional effect. Bring the look to life with fresh greenery and indoor plants. 3. Eclectic and Bold. “Own your own style and show it off and make a personal statement," Nayak says. An easy way to achieve this bold trend is to paint a door, an accent piece or even a ceiling in a bright color, such as Jester Red or Ceylon Yellow. Unsure if bold colors are for

you? Take a look in your closet to see which shades you tend to gravitate toward most. 4. Fluid and Fashionable. Create a space that exudes effortlessness by infusing repetitive patterns and fluid transitions of the same color. According to Nayak, the best way to incorporate varying shades of a single color is to use a paint sample strip, like you might find at a paint supply store, as guidance to achieve a serene look throughout the space. Otherwise, stick to a single shade and carefully play with patterns. For example, pair striped dining room chairs with a patterned rug for a fashion-forward statement. 5. Luxe Modern. A little design secret to keep in mind — mixing metals is back and in a big way. Nayak encourages DIYers to complement metallic accents, instead of matching them. She suggests creating a palette of two to four metal tones and distributing them throughout the space in ways that are intentional and maintain balance. For a look that is glamorous, yet modern, consider pairing rose gold with pewter or brushed gold and stainless steel. Ingenious and easy to achieve, these rising trends for 2019 will provide the necessary inspiration to update your home’s interiors.

Crystal clear lagoon at Epperson opens with a splash By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Metro Lagoons, by Crystal Lagoons — the first Crystal Lagoon amenity in the United States —officially opened with a party on Dec. 16. About 400 invited guests and residents were expected to turn out, according to officials. “Residents have waited a few months to get in here, so we wanted to throw them a nice holiday party,” said Eric Wahlbeck, managing director of Metro Lagoons. “This is compliments of Metro,” he said, noting the festivities would include a Eric Wahlbeck showing of the movie, “Elf,” on a huge screen, followed by the broadcast of the game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Baltimore Ravens. There also was free barbecue, bounce houses, a visit from Santa and, of course, people taking advantage of a chance to play in the lagoon — the only one of its type in the United States. The lagoon covers 7.5 acres and includes 16 million gallons of water. “It’s a pretty amazing idea of bringing crystal, clear water — this amount of water, this size, into a residential community. It’s something that’s never been done before. We’re really excited to offer this through the Epperson community,”Wahlbeck said.“What we’re excited about is getting the residents in here and allowing them to start enjoying

the space.” The lagoon’s water temperature fluctuates with the ground temperature. “In the summer, it’s going to be like the Gulf (of Mexico),” he added. The lagoon is operated using sustainable technology and maintained remotely by Crystal Lagoons to ensure crystal clarity. It offers various aquatic activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding and a waterslide with rock wall. There are also private cabanas, a family beach, an event pavilion and more. And, what’s there now is only the beginning,Wahlbeck said. “We’ve got development plans all around the lagoon,” he said, noting that new amenities will be added over time. The Epperson community currently has about 300 homes, with about 1,500 people living there. At completion, it is expected to have 4,000 dwellings.

There were lots of ways to enjoy Metro Lagoon by Crystal Lagoons, during a party to mark the amenity’s official opening at Epperson.

What’s Cookin’

Have some Hoppin’ John, and a Happy New Year By Betsy Crisp

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

The beginning of 2019 is right around the corner, and celebrating the start of a New Year often involves partaking in a traditional food ritual to promote health, luck and prosperity in the year ahead. In the Southern United States, many subscribe to the notion that eating just a bowl of Hoppin’ John will bring you good fortune in the New Year. The ritual dates back to the 1800s in South Carolina, where the food is also known as “Carolina Peas and Rice.” This AfricanAmerican dish is nothing fancy. It’s just a simple recipe of pork (ham hock/bacon/country sausage), black-eyed peas (or red cow peas/field peas) and rice. There are many ethnic variations of this dish. Beans and rice have been staples of many cultures around the world from Africa to Brazil (baiao-de-dois), Guiana, Peru (tacu-tacu), Costa Rica/Nicaragua (gallo pinta),Venezuela (pabellon criollo), Puerto Rico (arroz con gandules), the Caribbean and Cuba. You can follow the traditional way of cooking separately, or, as some prefer you can cook the black-eyed peas and rice in the same pot. Some may even add the greens to that same pot making it a one-dish meal. I like the simplicity of that idea, but would probably go a

FREE

step further and adapt to using my slow-cooker. In modern times, the recipe has been modified to make a somewhat healthier/more nutritious version using smoked turkey (instead of fattier pork products) to add flavor; sometimes jalapenos to add spice; red or

green bell peppers to add more color; and then served upon a bed of brown or white rice. I find the symbolism intriguing. Each food item represents a different meaning: black-eyed peas = coins; greens = money (“green backs”); corn bread = gold;

and tomatoes (optional) = health. Betsy Crisp is a Professor Emeritus, UF/IFAS Extension – Family & Consumer Sciences.

HOPPIN’ JOHN FOR NEW YEAR’S DAY Ingredients: 2 smoked turkey thighs (cooked as instructed below) 2 Tablespoons olive oil 1 cup onion, chopped 1/2 cup celery, chopped 1 cup red bell pepper (or ½ red + ½ green), diced 2 jalapenos (remove stem and seeds), chopped 1 Tablespoon garlic, chopped 1 pound dried black-eyed peas (rinse, remove any tiny stones/debris; soak overnight; rinse and drain)* 1 quart chicken stock (low-sodium) 1 bay leaf 3 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme) 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper Cayenne pepper to taste 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes 1-2 Tablespoons cider vinegar (optional) 1 cup green onion, thinly sliced for garnish 4 cups freshly steamed brown or white rice

Instructions: • In a large pot/Dutch oven, add turkey breasts and enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and reduce to simmer to cook until tender and meat falls off bone. Remove meat from pot (reserve broth in a large glass measuring cup – fat will rise to top and can easily be removed when cool). Let turkey cool to touch to remove bones and skin, and set aside. • Heat the olive oil over medium-high heat in the large pot. • Add the onion, celery, bell pepper, jalapenos and garlic, and cook until opaque and lightly browned, about 8 minutes. • Add the turkey meat, peas, chicken stock, bay leaf, thyme and a teaspoon of salt. • Simmer for 40-60 minutes, or until peas are just tender. • Add the can of diced tomatoes** • If liquid evaporates, add the saved broth. (You may have to add more seasoning) • Add 1-2 tablespoons cider vinegar (optional) ** and stir. • Garnish with green onions.

• Serve hot over rice (uncooked rice can be added to the pot early, but you will need that extra broth). Serve with collard/mustard/turnip greens (even chard/kale/cabbage/spinach) and corn bread to complete this Southern meal. Makes 10 servings. Notes: • Soaking dried peas overnight is not the only method, but helps speed cooking process, otherwise beans can take 1 ½-2 hours to become tender (do not overcook or they will become paste). Another technique is to rinse and sort to remove tiny stones/debris. Place peas in a large soup pot over medium-high heat and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, cover pot and let stand 1-2 hours. Drain and rinse beans. • Acid in the form of vinegar, tomatoes, lemon juice or something similar may make beans tough if added early in the cooking process and, therefore, beans may take longer to cook.

BUILD A BEAR FUNDRAISER NETS 200 DONATIONS Two hundred bears were made during the third annual Build A Bear For A Cause campaign, a fundraiser to bring holiday cheer to the under-served children in local elementary schools. The bears were distributed as follows: 19 to Double Branch Elementary, 32 to New River Elementary, 15 to Quail Hollow Elementary, eight to Seven Oaks Elementary, 30 to Veterans Elementary, 30 to Watergrass Elementary, 14 to Wiregrass Elementary and 44 to Wesley Chapel Elementary. In response to a last-minute request, eight bears also were donated to New Leaps Academy in Wesley Chapel, a school for children with varied exceptionalities.

A LESSON IN GIVING

The Primrose School at Collier Parkway is teaching children in VPK classes an important lesson about giving to others during the holiday season. Teachers took the three VPK classes on a field trip to Publix in Collier Commons to shop for other families in need served by Pasco Kids First. The classes of 15 to 21 children took turns shopping at half-hour increments. The school has had a holiday food drive for Pasco Kids First for the past two years, and the students brought items in from their homes. In the days that followed, the children and teachers discuss how food banks and shelters help people in the community. Each activity supports the lessons at the heart of the Caring and Giving Food Drive:

BURGESS, from page 1A

RICHARD K. RILEY

The Rev. Dayan Machado, left, of St. Rita Catholic Church, and Ed Laezza, a coordinator for Love One Another, are all smiles as they welcome people to Pasco County Nutrition Center on Dec. 16 for a meal served by the Love One Another ministry.

KINDNESS, from page 1A but then decided to reach out to other churches in Dade City, asking them to help. The churches responded. Now, in addition to First Baptist Church, other churches pitching in are St. Rita Catholic Church, Calvary Assembly of God, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church and Dade City Christian Church. “It’s really a joint venture, but it’s all to promote Jesus Christ,” explained Jesse O’ Berry, a volunteer who attends Dade City Christian Church. Each Sunday, a different church prepares and serves the meals. Besides expanding the ministry, the organization also began opening its doors to anyone who wanted to come to enjoy a hot dish. There’s also a food pantry — so those attending can take home items to last them through the week, and they can select items from a collection of clothing and personal hygiene items. Offering these items, Avila said, benefits people who are limited financially and who are sometimes are forced to make the difficult choice between buying groceries or prescription medicines. Ithzi Diaz, a mother of four, has been enjoying the hot meals for three years now. With scarce resources, she said it’s a struggle to provide for her children. The ministry has been a source of real help, she said. “It’s just a relief to have places like this,” Diaz said.“It’s hard for a single mom.” And, besides being able to take home groceries to help her family, she also can pick up treats for the pet cat. This time of year, the Nutrition Center has a holiday feel. There’s a decorated Christmas tree behind a table of pantry items, and the tables are neatly set with holiday-themed tablecloths. The desserts even include some colorful cookies, shaped like ornaments. Avila is grateful for the year-round generosity of those who sustain the ministry. “I’m so thankful that people have contributed to make these things happen,”Avila said. Donors include the nonprofit organization Restored Hope, and Panera Bread. A fitness center also helps, by providing canned goods and pet food. Schools pitch in, too. Pasco Middle School, Centennial Middle School and Centennial Elementary School all contribute canned goods on Fridays. Students from Saint Leo University volunteer occasionally, too. In addition to the Sunday meals, Love One Another also helps other organizations, when it has a surplus of food. “If there’s a need out there, and we can help somebody else because we’ve been blessed, then we pass that on,”Avila said. Forty-one-year-old Joey Yawn has witnessed Love One Another’s good works, and tries to emulate them. He’s been attending

the Sunday meals for the past 10 years. The Dade City man said he’s willing to open his home to others in need because the organization has helped him. In addition to providing a welcome meal, the program has created a community, where friendships are formed and people care about each other,Yawn said. He recalled one instance someone gave him some eggs and he passed them along to a single mom, so she could take them home. Over time,Yawn has managed to get his brother, Kevin, and a friend, Ben Lehman, to come to the Sunday dinners. “It’s been a blessing that God has put this in our lives because, without this, a lot of us would probably go hungry during the week,” the 20-year-old Lehman said. Like his friend, he too has learned the meaning of sharing love and compassion to others. “If I see a homeless guy on the way and I have a bag, I try to give him something,” he explained, quoting the Golden Rule. When people ask him why he has such a joyful spirit, he tells them he can only attribute it to having a close relationship with God. Many of those attending a recent Sunday gathering felt the same way as Vonette Mobley, who said,“Everybody that we meet, they’re very nice and make us feel like we’re family.” Mobley, who initially came because she was invited by Avila, said she always felt respected and welcome. There’s never been a sense of being looked down on, Mobley said. She has always felt like an equal. She brings along her two daughters, Jasmine and Moesha, plus her granddaughter, Destiny. “I was wondering earlier — ‘What am I going to cook for a Sunday meal?’ — and then my kids said,‘Mom, just go to Love One Another’,” she said, chuckling. Besides the meal and company, those attending often get something else, too: News of free events that will be coming up soon in the community, such as the Dade City Symphony or the Christmas Parade. Plus, at the beginning of each month, there’s also a cake to celebrate those having a birthday that month. At Love One Another gatherings, there’s food for the body, and soul.

and exciting. He said he’s delighted to be the one person, in a state of 21 million, that DeSantis wants for the post. “I’ve worked hard on veterans issues,” Burgess said. This new position will give him greater opportunities to serve people who have served this country, he said. DeSantis explained his recommendation, in a written statement, according to the Sunshine State News. “Danny’s commitment to our nation and especially to Florida’s veteran community make him the perfect fit to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs. “His relentless advocacy for veterans in the Florida Legislature is proof of his commitment to the well-being of our veterans and addressing the important issues they face. I know he will work tirelessly to continue to improve our ability to serve Florida’s veterans, and I look forward to discussing his exemplary record with members of the Cabinet when we convene,” the Sunshine State News reported. Burgess recently won a third term for District 38, which covers eastern Pasco County. He also is a captain in the U.S.Army Reserves. Before serving in the Florida House, Burgess served on the Zephyrhills City Council was mayor of Zephyrhills. If Burgess vacates his seat, it will trigger a need for a special election. The timing of that is not yet certain, said Pasco Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley. First, DeSantis must be sworn into office, which is slated for Jan. 8, and the cabinet has to confirm Burgess. Then Burgess must vacate his seat.

State Rep. Danny Burgess has been recommended to serve as the state’s next executive director of Florida’s Department of Veterans Affairs.

Once those things, which are expected to happen, happen, Corley said then the new governor would issue an order for a special election for House District 38. There are about 115,000 voters in District 38.The special election would work like any other election, including early voting, vote by mail, and voting on election day. “There could be primaries. It all depends on who decides to run,” Corley said. It’s not unprecedented in Pasco to have a special election to fill a vacancy, after a governor appointment, Corley said. Mike Fasano resigned from his House District 36 seat after Gov. Rick Scott appointed him in 2013 to become the Pasco County tax collector, after Mike Olson’s death. That appointment required a special election to fill the District 36 seat in the Florida House, Corley said. Burgess said he’s aware that Randy Maggard plans to run for District 38. “He’s a close family friend,” Burgess said. “He’s got my full support.”

and underway, she said. Another proposal calls for adding lanes at all four stops at the intersection of State Road 56 with Mansfield Boulevard, Meadow Pointe Boulevard and Wyndfields Boulevard. Any road expansions on State Road 56 would be independent projects from the three proposed roadway connections, she said.

Top moments in sports during 2018 By Kevin Weiss

eams captured state titles and local athletes turned in outstanding performances, during a year that brought shining moments and lasting memories. Here are some of the highlights, from across The Laker/Lutz News coverage area:

Zephyrhills Christian Academy senior Evan Miller won first place in the 1A boys 100meter dash in 10.75 seconds at the Florida High School Athletic Association Track & Field 2018 Championships.

Local sprinter wins state title It’s not often a small-school athlete gets to celebrate on a big stage. But, that’s what happened to Zephyrhills Christian Academy senior Evan Miller. He captured the Class 1A boys 100meter dash title in a blistering 10.75 seconds at the Florida High School Athletic Association Track & Field 2018 Championships, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. The senior was also the final leg of the school’s gold-medal winning 4x100-meter relay team that scorched the competition with a 42.10 second mark — joining junior NyJohn Moody, sophomore Tyler Davis and senior Calvin Samuel. Those marked the only first-place finishes at the state track & field meet among athletes from The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. It’s also noteworthy, considering Zephyrhills Christian has about 250 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade and was in just its second year offering a boys and girls track & field program. For Miller, the memorable showing had been a year in the making. The previous summer, the multi-sport athlete suffered a broken ankle during a 7on-7 football tournament. The injury forced Miller, a standout de-

USA Women’s Hockey, fans celebrate gold in Wesley Chapel Just days after celebrating a gold medal win in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the USA women’s ice hockey team returned to where their remarkable journey started — Wesley Chapel. That’s where the team spent more than five months preparing for the Winter Olympics, training at Florida Hospital Center Ice and lodging at Saddlebrook Resort. It’s also where daily practices, off-ice testing and intra-squad scrimmages were used to determine the 23 players selected in May for the Team USA roster. The team spent the better part of an hour on the afternoon of Feb. 28 greeting fans, posing for pictures and signing autographs at the Center Ice facility. The event drew excitement from hockey enthusiasts, such as Wesley Chapel’s Rob Simonelli, who was prideful of the fact the Olympic team trained in his hometown. “I just was excited that this was their home base. Just following them when they made this their home was kind of cool,” Simonelli said, at the time. “They’re really friendly, and it’s nice that they decided to come and just kind of say ‘Hey’ to the people,” he added. The surprise visit was part of a nationwide media blitz that also took them to Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and New York City. The week prior, the team defeated Canada in a 3-2 shootout to win gold, ending a 20-year drought for the women’s hockey program. Florida Hospital Center Ice was picked fensive back, to miss several games in the fall as a member of the Zephyrhills Christian varsity football team. Unable to hit the gridiron, Miller hit the starting blocks instead, as part of his rehabilitation process. The newfound sport proved to be his true calling. Miller linked up with well-regarded AAU track coach and personal trainer BB Roberts, who runs the Wesley Chapel-based Speed Starz Track Club, and lists NFL and MLB athletes as training clientele. Roberts, a former track star in his own right at Wesley Chapel High School and Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College, worked to correct Miller’s running form and technique, among other tips. The fixtures shaved Miller’s 100-meter personal record from a still-impressive 11.2 to a 10.69 — which he set at the Steinbrenner High Invitational in early April. Miller is now a freshman sprinter at Division I University of South Carolina, where he’s training under the Olympic pedigree of legendary head coach Curtis Frye.

Academy at the Lakes varsity softball won the FHSAA Class 2A state title on May 22 after defeating Monticello Aucilla Christian 1-0 in 11 innings. The Wildcats finished the season 26-4.

Academy at the Lakes wins first state softball title Buoyed by a longtime Division I coach in Diane Stephenson, one of the state’s top arms in Lexi Kilfoyl, and a potent offense averaging nearly seven runs per game, the 2018 Academy at the Lakes varsity softball team lived up to the preseason hype — finishing with a remarkable 26-4 record and winning its first-ever Class 2A state championship. The state crown was a follow-up to an impressive 20-win season and regional final appearance in 2017. For the Wildcats, the most dramatic moment of the 2018 campaign came in its most important game. Academy at the Lakes outlasted Monticello Aucilla Christian 1-0 in 11 innings on May 22 at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, in a game that featured a pitcher’s

duel through wet, muddy conditions. Kilfoyl, then a junior, outlasted Aucilla Christian senior and Florida signee Elizabeth Hightower by unleashing a 13-strikeout, fourth-hit shutout. The softball sensation and Alabama signee also did some work with the bat. Kilfoyl was responsible for the game-winning single that allowed freshman shortstop Brooke Blankenship to score on a two-out single in the 11th inning — unseating an Aucilla Christian program that had won state crowns two of the last three years. Forecasting ahead, a state title repeat for the Wildcats in 2019 certainly seems within reach. Kilfoyl and Stephenson return, as do much of the key contributors from its statewinning squad.

as Team USA’s training ground over such hockey facilities in Boston, Chicago and other cities — placing a feather in Pasco County’s cap in its quest to become a topnotch sports tourism destination. The time spent by the Olympic gold medalists in Wesley Chapel led them to later be dubbed by some residents as ‘Pasco’s team.’ The stay in Wesley Chapel likewise proved special for the elite athletes, from top-flight training digs and hospitality, to the warm, sunny weather.

Said defenseman Cayla Barnes, then the youngest member of Team USA at 19 years old:“These facilities were awesome, the staff here was amazing, and they really helped us with everything we needed. It was great to be down here, such nice weather, and really nice to train out here in preparation for the games.” Added two-time Olympian and forward Kendall Coyne:“Hockey in Florida was new to a lot of us, but I don’t think it took long for us to realize that hockey is serious in Florida,”

Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex breaks ground The Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex’s June 7 groundbreaking represented a major step for Pasco County, as it looks to become a premier sports tourism destination in the years ahead. Expected to open in late 2019, the $44 million, 98,000-square-foot complex is slated to feature eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts, a cheer and dance studio, a fitness center, and sports medicine and athletic training offerings. In addition to its indoor offerings, the complex will have seven outdoor sports fields, an amphitheater with an event lawn, walking trails, pavilions and a playground. The complex — being built off State Road 54, near The Shops at Wiregrass— will operate on Monday through Thursday as a community-based sports center for youth, adults and seniors, while weekends will be set aside to host tournaments, competitions and other events that will generate hotel stays and tax revenues for the county. The county will own the facility and share in anticipated profits with RADD Sports, a private company that will operate

and manage the sports complex. Officials say annual economic impact would be about $6.5 million for the new facility. Over 10 years, about $8 million or more in sales and use taxes would be generated, not including tourism taxes from hotel stays, officials say. The complex adds to a growing list of premier, state-of-the art sports facilities in east Pasco — and further markets the area as a sports tourism destination primarily for youth and amateur sports. Other nearby offerings include Florida Hospital Center Ice in Wesley Chapel, which opened in early 2017 as the largest hockey complex in the southeastern United States; Saddlebrook Resort & Spa, an upscale resort renowned for world-class golf and tennis training; and, Wesley Chapel District Park, which sits on 144 acres and contains 10 fullsize athletic fields, and lighted outdoor tennis courts and basketball courts. Efforts also recently began in a quest to build a premier aquatics facility in Land O’ Lakes, as well as a multimillion dollar tennis complex in Zephyrhills.

LAND O’ LAKES HIGH HONORS ‘VOICE OF THE GATORS’

ACADEMY AT THE LAKES WINS ITS SECOND STRAIGHT FOOTBALL TITLE

For Land O’ Lakes High School, the 2018 ‘Butter Bowl’ will go down as one of the most historic, as the Gators football team finally cracked an eight-game losing streak to crosstown rival Sunlake High School, with a 35-24 home victory. The most enduring moment of that Sept. 14 evening, however, happened right before kickoff. That’s when a special dedication ceremony was held to honor longtime athletics booster Mike Connor. The press box space at John Benedetto Stadium named the Mike Connor Family Press Box. The dedication drew dozens of friends and family, as well as current and former Gators coaches, who showed their support and appreciation for Connor, who passed away a month later at age 69. Connor, a volunteer at the school since 1989, was instrumental in building a sustainable athletic and football booster club. His efforts also helped established a yearly scholarship fund for a male and female at the high school. Connor, too, served as the ‘Voice of the Gators,’ calling the action of every Friday night home game for nearly two decades, and creating catchphrases, such as ‘a gaggle of Gators.’

Following last year’s historic eight-man state title run, questions swirled about how the Academy at the Lakes football program would handle a newfound target on its back and the loss of several impactful players. The team responded with aplomb— finishing with a perfect 10-0 record and winning its second straight eight-man state title, downing Miami Citi Christian Academy Fire 36-18 in the Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools (FCAPPS) championship game on Dec. 8, at Southeastern University in Lakeland. Filled with new faces and inexperience at some positions, the Wildcats proved to be greater than the sum of its parts, winning games by way of stout defense and timely offense. In the playoffs, the Wildcats overcame a 16-0 halftime deficit in the state semifinals game against Duval Charter, ripping off 27 unanswered points to send them to the state championship game. The state title game also proved to be a test of mettle, as the Wildcats held onto a 22-18 lead late into the fourth quarter before pulling away for good.

Did Lincoln actually sign this document? Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders Special to The Laker/Lutz News

This columnist traveled to Illinois to find out

M

y travels to Lincoln, Illinois, began with a column published in The Laker/Lutz News on July 11, regarding a document that had been passed down, from one generation — to the next, to the next. That column pondered:What would it be like to have a large document signed by Abraham Lincoln, and not know its value or its history — or if it really had been signed by the nation’s 16th president? The document belongs to 84-year-old Martha M. Fountain, a lifelong resident of Zephyrhills. It is an Executive Order, dated Dec. 15, 1864, and appears to be signed by President Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton and Assistant Adjutant Gen. E.D. Townsend. The document originally belonged to Martha’s husband of 31 years, Guy Joseph Fountain Jr. It had hung proudly in his office at Best Way Electric in Dade City. When he died in 2016 it became Martha’s sole property, because the couple had no children. However, Martha had no knowledge of the document’s original history. After months of research involving several military websites and the History Center at the Pioneer Florida Museum and Village, north of Dade City, I tracked down the history of Guy Fountain’s great-great uncle Samuel Warren Fountain, who was 15 years old at the outbreak of the American Civil War on April 12, 1861. To recap some of that history, Samuel volunteered to join the Ohio National Guard, serving under Maj. Gen. David Hunter, during the Valley Campaigns of 1864. Hunter later achieved his own fame as part of the military commission trying the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Samuel’s military career also continued, involving at one point military campaigns against Geronimo and Sitting Bull. In 1904, when Samuel was a lieutenant colonel, he directed security at the St. Louis World’s Fair. Ironically, Geronimo was also at the fair as a living exhibit intended as a “monument to the progress of civilization.” Samuel was a brigadier general a year before the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in the nation’s capital, and he gave a speech about Lincoln during an appearance before the Union League Club of Philadelphia on Feb. 9, 1921. In part, Samuel said:“Other men have reunited a divided nation, or liberated an enslaved race, or carried to conclusion a fratricidal war, or swept immoral institutions from the earth by consummate statesmanship; but no man ever combined and carried through, chiefly by the clarity of his mind and the purity of his character, several such gigantic enterprises in half a decade.” So, with Samuel’s accomplishments welldocumented — and with the permission of Martha and her attorney, John Council, I set out with the document to the Land of Lincoln to see what I could find out about it.

From left, James M. Cornelius, John Paul and Norm Schmidt, examine Martha Fountain’s Lincoln Document, in downtown Springfield, Illinois.

President Abraham Lincoln’s signature remains legible after 154 years.

Martha Fountain proudly holds her Lincoln document.

Lincoln, Illinois, is the only town named by Lincoln himself. He was a young lawyer practicing there from 1847 to 1859.

TRAVELING TO FIND SOME ANSWERS The trip itself was quite an adventure. In an attempt to outrun Hurricane Michael, in October, I barely missed a tornado — that was just a mile away in Jacksonville. Then, I survived a hotel room without power, in Walterboro, South Carolina, and then spent an afternoon with the staff at a Cracker Barrel in Charlotte, because of heavy downpours in North Carolina. Once I reached the home of Norm and Judi Schmidt, who live in Akron, Ohio, I soon would have a personal guide for the remainder of my trip. Norm had learned about Martha’s Lincoln document through a copy of my column he received from Donna Swart, a former mayor of San Antonio and former curator of the Pioneer Florida Museum and Village in Dade City. Donna also was a neighbor who grew up next door to Norm’s family farm in Illinois. When Norm and I arrived in downtown Springfield, Illinois, on a cold Sunday after-

noon, James M. Cornelius and John Paul were there to meet us. Cornelius is the curator of the Lincoln Collection at the Lincoln Presidential Library, and Paul is a bookseller who owns Prairie Archives in downtown Springfield. We asked Cornelius to assess the authenticity of the document.

He told us: “The signatures of Lincoln, Stanton and Townsend were engraved by someone using a real signature, so it could be reproduced over and over. “The fine eagle decoration at the top also began as an engraving,” he said.“Once the printing plate had been set with the text, and the decoration, and the blank lines to be filled in by hand, any number of copies could be run off of a press from that plate. The ink used is darker, more enduring than what would come directly out of a fountain pen.” Families in Ohio would have more reason to hold onto the documents since the names were handwritten, Cornelius explained. “Ohio had roughly 15 regiments of these 100-days men in 1864,” he said. “At 1,000 men per regiment, that’s 15,000 copies printed with the engraved signature of Lincoln, Stanton and Townsend.” The document received by Samuel Warren Fountain is unique in one way, however, Cornelius said. “Most of the Ohio men who did the 100 days in 1864 were ‘old’ for soldiering, usually 30 to 45 years of age.” So, it turns out that while the document wasn’t originally signed by Lincoln, it isn’t a forgery. Paul examined Martha’s document, to estimate a value. Paul said that Martha’s document dates back to the civil war period. He also noted “some marginal tears and one small marginal loss.”

Paul estimated the document’s value at $400. “Our value is based largely on the history of this individual soldier, an underage volunteer, with a subsequently successful military career,” Paul explained. Cornelius agreed that Fountain’s history is compelling.“Rarely would you get a story and career as interesting as Fountain’s from such service.” Indeed, Fountain was photographed with Douglas MacArthur at West Point, and was good friends with John “Black Jack” Pershing, who later served as the commander of the American Expeditionary Force during World War 1. After visiting Springfield, Norm and I traveled south to the city of Lincoln, Illinois, where the Lincoln Heritage Museum is located on the campus of Lincoln College. It was here that an offer was made to display Martha’s document as part of 50,000 items of Lincoln memorabilia at the museum. Martha and her attorney are delighted that the document will have a permanent home in Illinois. “This seems to be a perfect place,” Martha said, smiling broadly.
