Speakers at the recent “Discover Dade City” symposium cast a spotlight on East Pasco’s development opportunities. The event, held in the conference center at the East Pasco campus of Pasco-Hernando State College, focused on ongoing projects, as well as those on the drawing board and future prospects. The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Greater Tampa Realtors and Central Pasco Association of Realtors (which merged with the Pinellas Realtor organization), hosted the inaugural event on Nov. 29. Larry Guilford, who moderated the two panels of speakers, said “so many things are already happening in Dade City, and so much more is going to happen.” Dade City Mayor Camille Hernandez said since becoming mayor in 2012, she has tried “to make sure that Dade City has a seat at

the table.” The city continues to look at ways to enhance its quality of life, through such amenities as recreational trails, a bike hub and a splash park, Hernandez said. It also wants to find ways to repurpose its old buildings, and to explore a Farm-toTable initiative, she said. As the city grows, it wants to be sure it plans appropriately, Hernandez added, so it can preserve the “quaint authentic nature of Dade City that you won’t find anywhere else.”

Pasco has new process for school choice program By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Schools adopted a new approach this year for its school choice program. Now, the district has separate time frames for submission of secondary and elementary school choice applications. Also, all school choice options including International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge, STEM, Collegiate High School and Wendell Krinn Technical High School have been combined into one time frame for secondary schools. And, the school choice options for elementary schools, including International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge and STEAM also have been combined into one time frame.

The application window already has opened for choice applications for middle and high school students in Pasco County Schools, with a deadline of Dec. 14 for those applications. The parent acceptance period for those students is Feb. 5 through Feb. 15. The choice application period for elementary school students will be Jan. 8 through Jan. 18.The parent acceptance period for those students will be Feb. 20 through March 1. To help families understand the new process and their options, the district had two choice expos. Parents streamed into an expo on Nov. 29 at Wesley Chapel High School, accompanied by children of all ages to check out their school choice options. See SCHOOL, page 15A

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Story time happens every week at New River Branch Library, but the program on Dec. 5 was particularly special because the library was one of 250 public libraries across the country to receive a grant from the American Library Association’s ‘Libraries Ready to Code’ initiative. The initiative, sponsored by Google, aims to help implement and plan coding activi-

ties during Computer Science Education Week. The grant allowed the library to purchase a toy called a Code-A-Pillar by Fisher Price, which can be used to teach young children the basics of computer coding. In recognition of Computer Science Week, the library, at 34043 State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel, also set up coding stations, robots, crafts and cool projects throughout the week to teach toddlers to teens about computer science.

Local agency helps Laker/Lutz News sales people to stop smoking executive receives honors By Brian Fernandes

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

While some people wait until New Year’s Eve to make a resolution to quit smoking, experts say there’s no time like the present to get started on the effort. Those who have tried to quit smoking understand the uphill battle in attempting to kick the habit to the curb. But, help is available. Through its tobacco cessation program, the National Area Health Education Center has been training health care professionals nationwide to help smokers overcome their addiction. In Florida alone, the organization has 10 centers covering all 67 counties. The Gulf Coast North Area Health Education Center (GNAHEC) covers five counties, includ- Nicole Kelly ing Pasco. Established in 1993, this center has long been affiliated with the University of South Florida’s College of Medicine. It provides resources to help end tobacco use. The Gulf Coast center offers courses through funding provided by the Florida Department of Health. “They contract with us to do the in-person group classes,” said Nicole Kelly, tobacco cessation program manager for the center. Kelly’s background in public health serving Pinellas County was put to good use when she joined the center’s staff in 2013. After undergoing additional training for her position, she became certified in holding tobacco cessation programs – which aims to help smokers to kick the habit. The Gulf Coast center offers two free tobacco cessation programs – ‘Tools to Quit’ and ‘Quit Smoking Now.’ ‘Tools to Quit’ is a one-time, two-hour session that helps attendees to make plans and prepare to quit smoking. Specialists, like Kelly, identify the withdrawal symptoms that are expected, how to deal with them as they arise and offer nicotine replacement therapy, if needed. “We encourage them to set a quit date a week or two after class, so they don’t feel like they have to quit that day,” she explained. One-time sessions are usually followed up with an evaluation to check on the person’s status seven months after the class. While walk-ins are welcomed, those who plan to attend are asked to register in advance. This helps to get an idea beforehand of how long they have been smoking, how often and if they have taken any medications. ‘Quit Smoking Now’ is a six-week program. Class members meet one hour each week. It’s the same methodology as ‘Tools to

Quit,’ but at a more gradual process. Between classes, members are supposed to put into action the techniques and advice given. At each session, they report their progress and, by the third week, are asked to quit cold turkey. The Gulf Coast center is planning to implement a third program in January 2019, which would accommodate large classes at behavioral health sites. Programs can be held at various locations from medical establishments to libraries. “Most hospitals and health care systems don’t have tobacco cessation programs that they provide, so we fill that gap perfectly,” said Kelly. The program also partners with establishments at on-the-job sessions for employees battling with addiction. This was the case on Nov. 15 for the Great American Smokeout when Gulf Coast center specialists helped encourage workers at their job site to quit smoking. During the annual event, put on by the American Cancer Society, thousands of smokers across the country make a pledge to quit. In 2006, Florida voters accepted an amendment that would allocate funds into tobacco cessation programs, thus supporting the Gulf Coast center and creating the Tobacco Free Florida Bureau in 2007. Tobacco Free Florida opened up courses not only for cessation to end chain-smoking, but also courses for prevention as well. These organizations also aim to prevent smoking, especially among youths. According to the Florida Department of Health, the state has made improvements among high school students. In 2018, 3.6 percent of students were reported as cigarette smokers, a decline from 8.5 percent just five years before. However, electronic cigarettes, or e-cigs, have become a popular alternative to traditional ones among Florida teens. In 2013, 5.3 percent of high school students were consuming the product where now, in 2018, it has nearly quadrupled, to 24.8 percent. The Gulf Coast center does not advocate the use of e-cigarettes or vaping as a method within its program. As part of the reasoning, Kelly stated: “Our program is evidence-based. We follow the clinic practice guidelines for tobacco dependence.” She added that there are seven medications known to help and “we only promote the ones that we know there is strong research to show that they can help someone quit.” While Kelly works mostly with adults, she said she gets excited when younger smokers come to the sessions because she can help stop smoking earlier in life. Many older adults experience a health scare, which triggers their decision to quit smoking, she said. To find an upcoming tobacco cessation class in your area with contact information, visit GNAhec.org/tobacco-cessation.

Guardian ad litem volunteers advocate for children By Brian Fernandes

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

One of the greatest opportunities a child can have is to be raised in a safe, caring foundation, surrounded by those they know they can trust. According to the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), there are more than 400,000 children in the United States living in foster care — many without any understanding of what it is to have a permanent home. Abuse and neglect are the primary reasons why youths are removed from their homes, and CASA is a nationwide organization which assists children through the court system to be placed in homes. Guardian ad Litem is a child advocacy group, operating under the auspices of CASA, which offers services across the 20 judicial circuits of Florida. Guardian ad Litem is made up of a team of volunteers, attorneys and child advocate managers whose sole purpose is tending to the needs of foster children. Guardian ad Litem, of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, which covers both Pasco and Pinellas counties, was established in the early 1980s. This year the circuit has the second highest rate of abused and neglected youth in and out of home care – with more than 2,000 reported cases. Larnelle Scott and Mariela Ollsen both work for Guardian ad Litem in the Sixth Circuit. While there are different factors for why the rate in this circuit is so high, both women attribute much of it to the rise in the opioid epidemic, which has also plagued

Dade City and in New Port Richey. Guardian ad Litem doesn’t have any say in whether a child is removed from the home or where they are placed, but they can make recommendations based on their case studies and interactions with the children. While they are ultimately trying to provide security for those in foster care, sometimes the kids don’t see it from that perspective. “Court can be a scary thing for kids,” explained Ollsen.“There’s a lot of trauma involved with the kid when you remove them. Parents concerned about their child’s well-being sometimes reach out to her, as they know she will advocate for what is in their child’s best interest. As the community outreach coordinator, Scott has become a familiar confidant in the children’s lives as they sometimes divulge their deepest feelings. She affirmed that: “The foster home placement might change, the case manager may change, the schools might change, but the Guardian ad Litem is usually that one anchor that they know is going to be in their corner.” If interested in becoming a volunteer, visit GuardianAdLitem.org. OTIVES WHAT’S NEW FOR 2019 FROM AUTOMAKERS? Your local automotive buyer’s guide

Presented by The Laker/Lutz News • DECEMBER 2018

S

ome have been around forever, some not quite so, many will be around for decades, and quite a few undergo major modifications. That’s the auto industry for you. Here’s a peek at the noticeable changes in vehicles for 2019:

By NITISH S. RELE

motoringtampabay@gmail.com

HONDA: The Insight is back, a hybrid that can fetch up to 55 mpg while base-priced at just $22,830, and it does look far better than its predecessor – almost a carbon copy of the Civic. Also making a return, after 16 years though, is the Passport slotted between the compact CR-V and the larger Pilot. It will get a sole standard 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower, mated to a fresh nine-speed auto gearbox.

2019 ACURA RDX ACURA: With crossover vehicles in huge demand, Acura saw it fit to redesign the 2019 RDX inside and out. It now sits on a new platform, powertrain (2.0-liter inline-4-cylinder engine putting out 272 hp and a roomier and always expected techsavvy cabin. Lest we forget, the 10-speed auto transmission. It also acquires Acura’s new touchpad user interface.

2019 CHEVY SILVERADO CHEVROLET: Amid tough competition in the pickup market comes an overhauled Silverado 1500 4WD with a wheelbase stretched by 3.9 and length by 1.6 inches. Rear seat legroom gets a 3-inch boost. And, the truck is lighter by 450 pounds from the previous model. And, it comes with a varied choice of power trains, abundant passenger room and incredible tow/haul capabilities. What more can a pickup shopper ask for in a work ride? GMC: Hardcore pickup owners, your poised ride is here. The Sierra 1500 pickup has been totally redesigned with an all-new 3.0-liter diesel 6-cylinder engine. It’s also larger, longer and lighter (360 pounds) than the previous version and comes in six engine/transmission combos. This

utilitarian workhorse boasts not just generous cargo and tow capacity but also outstanding performance, marvelous ride and an upscale, gargantuan interior. JAGUAR: It’s stacking up awards by the dozens. That’s the all-electric I-PACE, which looks to directly compete with Tesla. Priced at $69,500, the SUV with a 90kWh battery delivers a range of about 230 miles on a full charge. Zero to 60 is achieved in just 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. Not bad at all. NISSAN: The Altima receives a major exterior and interior design change, two all-new engines and for the first time ever, an all-wheel-drive power train on a Nissan sedan in America. This for a ride that was introduced in 1993. Base-priced at $23,750, the Altima has proved to be a huge success story. For 2019, the Japanese carmaker has also refreshed the Maxima sedan and the Murano crossover. KIA: After a one-year hiatus, the restyled K900 returns with a 3.3-liter V6 engine pumping 365 hp. The Korean carmaker’s rear-wheel-drive premium flagship boasts a cabin as top-notch and upscale as any of its German competitors. Also undergoing a styling change is the compact Forte, now longer by 3 inches, opening up plenty of room for occupants. Not only is the gas-sipper (EPA 34 mpg city) fun, lively and well-balanced, but also inexpensive at around $20,000.

2019 JAGUAR I-PACE liter (181 hp). This Urban + X-over (crossover) is a purposeful vehicle with no compromises! Also, an F Sport joins the midsize ES sedan lineup.

2019 SUBARU ASCENT SUBARU: Meet an all-new family hauler that has replaced the long-forgotten Tribeca. The aptly-named Ascent is equipped with a 2.4-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine producing a healthy 260 hp. The seven-seater will definitely give the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9 a run for the money. Subaru also has revamped its smaller Forester SUV. LINCOLN: Remember the midsize luxury MKX? Well, it’s been replaced by the Nautilus with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (245 hp) or the 2.7-liter turbo V-6 (335 hp), which was offered in the MKX. Gorgeous to the eye inside and out, the SUV boasts nippy acceleration and excellent handling.

CADILLAC: The all-new XT4 features a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine putting out 237 hp while mated to a 9-speed auto gearbox. Available in front- and all-wheel drive, it’s priced just right starting at $35,790. That is economical and attractive for even an entry-level luxury SUV Caddy like the XT4. FORD: After eight years, the Ranger is back! The midsize pickup will be offered in at least three trims and two body styles, but will share one power train: 2.3-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine developing 270 hp and coupled to a 10-speed gear box. Also revamped are the Edge SUV and the best-selling F150 pickup. LEXUS: Lexus has introduced the UX in the fastest-growing compact SUV segment. The urban-centric ride is available in two trims: the frontwheel-drive UX200 with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine (169 hp) or the AWD UX250h gas/electric hybrid with a 2.0-

2019 HYUNDAI SANTA FE HYUNDAI: Just so there is no confusion, the Santa Fe Sport model is out. From 2019 onward, all you have is a two-row, five-passenger Santa Fe offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive. And, it will be a while before the three-row Santa Fe XL hits the market. The Veloster hatchback 2.0-liter engine gains horsepower and a redesign. Joining the Hyundai lineup is an all-new Kona subcompact SUV with 1.6- and 2.0-liter engines. RAM: The Ram 1500 pickup has gone through a major transformation. Sales are nationally up 9 percent, year-afteryear basis. The pickup, now longer,

WE DIDN’T JUST FIX TOONYYA’S CAR. WE FIXED HEER FEAR OF GETTINNG IT FIXED.

wider and offering the largest cabin in the segment, is loaded with tech goodies. Engineers at the recent Miami Auto Show praised its enhanced fuel economy and tow/haul increase of 20 percent. They claim the Ram is a “no-compromise truck.” We agree. TOYOTA: The best-selling car nameplate in the world gets a new hatchback with a 2.0-liter inline-4 cylinder (168 hp). Millennials will dig the look and feel of this hip Corolla. Also totally restyled is the RAV4, though Toyota has retained the 2.5-liter DOHC inline-4-cylinder engine (205 hp). Off-roading is now a real possibility in this roomy and secure ride.

2019 VW ARTEON VW: A longer and bigger Arteon flagship sedan replaces the CC four-door coupe. The sleek-appearing car with a wide stance gets a 2.0-liter TSI engine (268 hp) while paired to an eightspeed auto gearbox. With an even bolder front fascia and upscale cabin, the Jetta becomes an even more attractive proposition for small-car buyers. Indeed, this compact sedan is a splendid combination of thrift (starting at $18,545), practicality and fun to drive. BMW: The 8 Series returns to the U.S. after two decades. Under the hood of the all-wheel-drive car resides a 4.4liter TwinPower turbo V8 engine delivering an astounding 523 hp. Base price? Just $111,900! The BMX X3, X4 and X5 undergo noticeable alterations. BENZ: A Mercedes-Benz base-priced at just $30,000? Yes, readers, your dream has come true. The brand-new A-Class compact sedan is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder engine and puts out just 188 hp. Also, the CLS 450 gets a design overhaul. AUDI: The A6, A7 and A8 sedans have been restyled.

REVAMPED 2019 LEXUS ES350: A NEAR PICTURE-PERFECT RIDE! By NITISH S. RELE

L

motoringtampabay@gmail.com

aunched 30 years ago, the Lexus ES350 has been the standard bearer for midsize luxury sedans. Delivering an entertaining and energetic ride since its launch, Lexus has once again totally overhauled the front-wheel-drive car for 2019. The seventh-gen ES is longer (2.6 inches), wider (1.8 inches), and lower (0.2 inches) from its predecessor. And, Lexus has added the more lively F Sport trim to the ES badge for the first time. The ES300h hybrid is available, too, with an all-new 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine putting out 215 horsepower and boasting fuel economy figures of 44 city, 45 highway and 44 combined. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine in the ES350 blasts off 302 horsepower (up by 34 hp for 2019) @ 6600 rpm and 267 pounds-feet (up 19) of torque @ 4700 rpm. Out goes the six-speed auto gear box to be replaced by a more capable, smoother and fuelefficient eight-speed. Suspension handled via independent front MacPherson strut-type and rear trailing-arm multilink does a worthy job of soaking up potholes and other road bumps. Returning a weighted response to the driver’s input is an improved power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. And, 0 to 60 mph is achieved in 6.6 seconds instead of the former 7.1 seconds, which is fittingly quick for a 3,649-pound vehicle. Ensconced on a unitized steel body is the signature spindle grille with a centered Lexus insignia, flanked by slim L-shaped LED projector-beam headlights and daytime running lights. A low, sleek roofline leads to wraparound LED tail lamps. Project chief designer Yasuo Kajino says the car has a “provocative elegance … The ES has always been an elegant luxury ride. For this generation, we have added daring design elements that challenge the traditional expectations of buyers.” And that certainly shows in its graceful stance. The cabin is typical Lexus with welcoming wood and piano black trim and leather as occupants are pampered in spacious seats. DAVID MAUS FAMILY BUYS GORDON CHEVROLET NEW OWNER BRINGS FAMILY VALUES TO DALE MABRY DEALERSHIP

G

ordon Chevrolet, the only automotive dealership in Carrollwood, has been sold to the David Maus family and is now Maus Family Chevrolet. Located on north Dale Mabry Highway, midway between Van Dyke Road and Bearss Avenue, it is the only dealership in the north Tampa area until the State Road 54 corridor in Lutz. “Our location makes us unique, because we’re the only dealer for several miles and we’re surrounded by residential neighborhoods that have grown up around us,” said David Maus Jr., who comanages the dealership with Patrick Abad, a family friend and longtime Maus employee. “Patrick and I are proud to be an integral part of the community, and excited to be enhancing and expanding automotive services for our neighbors,” said Maus. “We love shaking the hand of everyone who stops by, and welcoming them to the Maus family. We like to say we’re small enough to know you, but big enough to serve you.” In addition to selling new Chevrolet vehicles, the dealership has a large inventory of pre-owned trucks, SUVs and cars, a customer-focused service center and a professional body shop. “We believe it is important to be a full service dealership, so our customers can count on us for all their automotive needs,” said Maus. Maus adds that the dealership sells all makes of pre-owned vehicles, and that its service center and body shop take care of vehicles from just about every automobile manufacturer. Family is at the heart of every Maus dealership, and is the center of its core values. “We operate using Biblical principals, and look to Jesus as an example of how to serve people,” said Maus. For over 10 years, the Maus family has managed its businesses following a corporate philosophy they call IMPACT. “IMPACT stands for ‘Implementing More Positive Actions Creating Togetherness,’” said Maus. “And, that’s truly what we do — we are a positive, for-

ward thinking company that works hard to do the right things to bring us together as a family.” One reflection of this is the position his sister, Savannah, heads up for the company — Customer Appreciation. Her job is to make sure every customer has a positive experience, whether they are buying a new vehicle or having their vehicle serviced. Another example is the David Maus Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars to children’s charities throughout Florida, including Pasco Sherriff Charities and Ronald McDonald House Charities. There are close to 20 family members who work for Maus family dealerships in New Port Richey, Homosassa, Crystal River and now north Tampa. “Every member of our family adheres to these values,” said Maus. “We all live in

this area, attend church here, send our children to school here. We are committed to this community, which is why we believe so strongly in treating everyone we serve as members of our family.” David Maus Sr., started his automotive career in the mid 1990s in Orlando, where he eventually owned several auto dealerships. In 2014, he sold those dealerships and moved to Tampa Bay, where he bought a Nissan dealership in New Port Richey from Ferman Automotive. “We knew we wanted to be in the north Tampa area as well, and my father had his eye on Gordon Chevrolet for several years,” said Maus. “We couldn’t be more happy for the opportunity to buy Gordon Chevrolet and add it to our family of dealerships.” Maus has worked closely with his father his entire life, and credits his dad for making him the man he is today.

“I am so proud of my Dad. He is a man of faith and family, driven by hard work to succeed and provide for his family. Everything we do here is because of the lessons learned from our father,” said Maus. David is the oldest of five children. His older siblings also work in the business — Savannah in customer appreciation, and his brother, Tyler, as a used car manager. Before becoming general manager and vice president of Maus Family Automotive, Maus worked in several positions at the company, learning the business from the ground up. “On my 15th birthday, my dad asked me what I wanted, and I said a job, and he gave me a job stocking parts in the service department,” said Maus. “When I turned 16, dad moved me to the service counter and I began helping customers. At 17, I became a full-time detailer, probably the most fun job I’ve had – cleaning, buffing and detailing vehicles, and seeing the customer’s excitement when their vehicle was delivered.” At 18, Maus’ father told him it was time to go into sales, and he began selling vehicles at David Maus Toyota in Sanford. “I was working with sales people in their 40s with many years of experience, and I doubted that I could succeed,” Maus said. “But, I learned that sales is mostly about listening and serving, and asking the right questions to put a customer in the right car that works well for their lifestyle and budget.” Instead of going to college, Maus continued to learn on the job about management, financing, communicating, writing and providing excellent customer service. “I always wanted to be very good at every position I held in the company before moving up to the next one,” he said. “I want to earn everything I have by working hard, just like my father did.” Maus invites you to meet him and his staff at Maus Family Chevrolet. “Please stop by anytime so we can shake your hand and welcome you to the Maus family,” he said. “This is the best time of the year to buy a new vehicle, and the Maus family is here to help you,” said Maus.

CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH

Florida KidCare reminds parents that checking in on a child’s mental well-being is critical, and does not have to be intimidating. Behavioral or mental health is just as important as a child’s cardiovascular health, weight and other physical developmental benchmarks. Children often feel as much stress as adults following stressful situations, such as natural disasters like a hurricane. Kids’ symptoms can be subtle, so a few key signs to be mindful about include: • If your child is having trouble sleeping or having a loss of appetite • If your child is reluctant to cooperate • If your child is angry or irritable • If your child’s grades are suffering • If your child becomes less interested in an activity they once enjoyed Being a kid today comes with a lot of pressures and that is why starting the conversation early is key. Mental illness is like any other disease — the earlier it is identified and treated, the better the health outcomes. Florida KidCare says parents should consider their child’s pediatrician or family doctor as a partner in starting the mental health conversation.

ited Gulfside’s Center for Hospice Care in Zephyrhills to present the proclamation. In the last year, Gulfside’s staff of more than 300 interdisciplinary professionals has cared for 2,701 patients facing a life-limiting illness in Pasco County. Nationally, more than 1.6 million Americans living with life-limiting illnesses, and their families, received care from the nation’s hospice programs in communities throughout the United States.

LUMINARY AWARD GIVEN

MODEL UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE

Students from Tallahassee Community College’s Model United Nations team won five awards at the National Model United Nations Conference in Washington D.C., in November. That team included a local student from The Laker/Lutz News coverage area: Samuel Goetz, of Odessa. TCC’s student team represented the U.N. delegations of Sweden and Nepal. Both delegations earned Honorable Delegation Awards for their overall team effort in representing and speaking for these nations in various U.N. committees. The team was also recognized with three Position Paper Awards, which are based on the research and written policy positions submitted by students prior to the conference.

The Pasco Education Foundation’s Take Stock in Children Scholarship program has been named a recipient of the statewide Take Stock in Children 2018 Luminary Award. The program provides scholarships, mentors and hope to eligible students, and is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty through education. The criteria for the award is to exceed targets in every category of the Balanced Scorecard, the measurement of deliverables set by the statewide Take Stock in Children headquarters and the Florida Department of Education. SAINT LEO BEGINS CHRISTMAS SEASON

Saint Leo University kicked off the Christmas season at the school’s annual tree-lighting ceremony at the main campus on Nov. 27. Father Kyle Smith, university chaplain, read the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke, and then blessed the Christmas tree and the nativity, leading the Saint Leo community in prayer as it prepared for Advent. Music was provided by students Olivia Callahan and Allie Losee, and Dr. Cynthia Selph, director of the music program. Lucas Nocera, music minister for University Ministry, played the keyboard and led everyone in Christmas carols. The evening was capped off with cookies and treats for the students, faculty and staff.

promote economic growth. Burgess said, “That will open up so many opportunities.” David Gwynn, secretary of the Florida Department of Transportation District 7, said it looks like the State Road 56 extension could be completed as early as next spring, or at least by summer. The transportation leader talked about a number of other projects that will have a significant impact in East Pasco. The biggest investment involves projects on State Road 52, starting at the Suncoast Parkway, with stretches being widened all of the way over to U.S. 301, he said. “This summer, in June, we’re going to let over $150 million in state projects just on State Road 52,” he said. “Widening to six lanes the portion between the Suncoast (Parkway) and (U.S.) 41; some other projects between (U.S.) 41 and the interstate (I-75); and, the realignment (of State Road) 52 all of the way out.” The state also is studying whether State Road 56 could be further extended from U.S. 301 over to State Road 39 to create another corridor leading to Interstate 4. Another big project, referred to as the Diverging Diamond, is expected to begin construction in early 2019. Aimed at reducing congestion at State Road 56 and I-75, the project is expected to make traffic in that area more challenging during construction. The planned construction of an I-75 interchange at Overpass Road also is expected to provide a significant improvement to

PREPARING FUTURE WORKFORCE

On the education front, Kurt Browning, superintendent of Pasco County Schools, said a new technical high school expected to open in 2022 on Old Handcart Road will expand opportunities for students, while helping to boost Pasco’s economy. The school will serve students from the Dade City, Zephyrhills and greater Wesley Chapel areas. The goal is to build a school that helps students to develop skills that are needed by employers, which will benefit the school’s graduates and companies seeking to fulfill workforce needs. The district is doing its homework now, to ensure that the school is equipped to offer relevant programs, Browning said. “We don’t want to build a building and then figure out what programs we’re going to teach,” the superintendent said. Pasco County Commission Chairman Ron Oakley addressed the need for local government to pick up the pace with regards to permit approvals. “That’s the worst part of government — how slow it moves,” Oakley said. He pledged:“Pasco County is not going to hold up the builders and others who want to do things the right way. We’re going to make it so it’s more streamlined for them to get those permits. “There’s nothing wrong with controlled growth,” Oakley said.

being made in East Pasco. Jason Newmyer, administrator for Florida Hospital Dade City, said next year will be a transformative year at the hospital, as a $22 million makeover begins. Michael Lawson, director of operations for Metro Development Group, talked about Connected City, which is intended to be a place where there will be opportunities for everyone, ranging from large companies to small entrepreneurs. “We’re going to create this environment that will promote this growth,” Lawson said, noting the 50-year plan for Connected City calls for the development of 10 million square feet of nonresidential and 40,000 residential units. Connected City is in a corridor covering about 7,800 acres in northeast Pasco County. It borders Interstate 75, State Road 52, and Curley and Overpass roads. Some things are already happening. Epperson, a community in Connected City, became the first community in North America to open a manmade turquoise lagoon, known under the trademarked name, Crystal Lagoon. “Crystal Lagoon has been a game-changer for the industry. We were proud to be the first in the U.S. We’ll see these deployed all over the country, but that’s just one element (of Connected City). There are going to be so many more. “I look at Connected City as basically being an iPhone with unlimited ability to put Apps on it,” Lawson said. Dewey Mitchell, co-owner of Capstone Tropical Holdings Inc., was the symposium’s keynote speaker.

Agreeing with other speakers on the agenda, Mitchell said there’s no doubt East Pasco is poised for growth. He also touched on an issue raised by Dade City Mayor Hernandez. “I think the biggest issue for Dade City going forward — as all things happen, and they are going to happen — is keeping the charm the city has currently. I think that’s going to be the biggest issue. “I kind of like to look at the city of Dunedin. They’ve done a really good job of merging the old city with newer development. “It’s a pleasant place to be.There’s restaurants and shops. It’s lively. They have a bike path through. “It sounds easy, but it’s not,” he said. “At the risk of being offensive to someone, take St. Pete Beach. They messed it up,” he said, and now,“they’re struggling to get back what they once had. “They just didn’t do it right. Dunedin did,” Mitchell said. The symposium’s aim was to raise awareness of development opportunities in the East Pasco area, and provide networking opportunities for developers, brokers and property owners, according to John Moors, executive director of The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce. Saint Leo University was the presenting sponsor, assisted by Pasco-Hernando State College, First National Bank of Pasco, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Florida Properties Group, Florida Hospital Dade City/Zephyrhills, San Antonio Citizens Federal Credit Union, the City of Dade City and The Laker/Lutz News.

At various locations on campus, parents and their children could attend presentations on school choice programs, and in the school’s gym, they could stop by tables to talk to school representatives about programs being offered at their school. A similar expo was held on Nov. 26 at J.W. Mitchell High School in New Port Richey. The east-side and west-side events, both

Academy at the Lakes wins second straight title By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

T

hey did it again. The Academy at the Lakes Wildcats notched its second straight eight-man football title, downing Miami Citi Christian Academy Fire 36-18 in the Florida Christian Association of Private and Parochial Schools (FCAPPS) state championship on Dec. 8, at Southeastern University in Lakeland. Academy at the Lakes (10-0) never trailed against the Fire (7-3) in a game marked by physicality, aggressive play-calling and bouts of sloppy play. The Wildcats struck first blood midway through the first quarter when quarterback Jalen Brown, in the face of heavy defensive pressure, completed a 3-yard touchdown pass on fourth down to running back Adrian Leverette. Near the end of the first half, the sophomore signal-caller drove the Wildcats to the end zone again, with the score square 6-6. Fielding the ball at their own 38 after a Citi turnover on downs, Brown quickly brought the ball into opposing territory rumbling 22 yards on a bootleg run. He then completed two passes for downs, to set up a 17-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jullian Jennings, with under a minute to go in the half. For Brown, who entered the game with 26 total touchdowns, those types of plays have been par for the course. Brown was named offensive MVP for the game. “I thought his play was awesome,” Wildcats head coach Shawn Brown said.“I thought he stayed under control. I thought he stayed composed. “He had a heck of a season,” the coach FRED BELLET said. Team members for Academy at the Lakes hoist the championship trophy after beating Citi Christian Academy of Miami. The Wildcats cushioned their lead to 226 midway through the third quarter on a 3-yard rushing touchdown by senior running back/linebacker Dylan Price — set up by a successful onside kick that gave the Wildcats good field position. The squad from Miami didn’t give up without a tough fight, however. The Fire answered with two consecutive scoring drives — the first touchdown set up by a Wildcats failed onside kick; the second, set up by a Brown interception — to narrow the game to 22-18 early in the fourth quarter. And, they had a chance to take the lead, driving the ball from their own 38-yard line with 4 minutes left in regulation. At that point, the Wildcat’s championship prospects appeared dicey, with momentum on the opposition’s side. The team stuck together, however, through the tense moments. “Nobody got down on each other,” coach Academy at the Lakes’ quarterback No. 2 Jalen Brown was the offenHead Coach Shawn Brown signals during game action against Citi Brown said.“We constantly lift people up. sive most valuable player at the championship game against Citi Christian of Miami. After handing Santa a notebook that contains his Christmas wish list, 7-year-old James Kern of Odessa, left, listens as Santa, reads the list aloud inside the booth operated by the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club. (Santa couldn’t be there, so he sent his helper, Tom Bock, of Lutz, to fill in). Donations made at the booth will benefit the YMCA.

Shopping, tradition and Brunswick stew By Christine Holtzman Special to The Laker/Lutz News

T

here was essentially something for everyone at the 39th annual Juried Arts & Crafts Holiday Show, presented by the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2. Thousands flocked to Keystone Prep High School, at 18105 Gunn Highway in Odessa, to check out offerings from about 350 vendors, to enjoy a bite to eat and to socialize. Some were there to confer with Santa, too. Spending time at the arts and crafts show is an annual tradition for Nicole Reilly and her mother, Mary Lynn, and this year they were thrilled to introduce it to the newest member of the family, Nicole’s 7-month-old son, Lincoln. Bonnie Duvall and Judy Curry, friends who live in Wesley Chapel, said they enjoy attending the event every year to shop for Christmas gifts and to enjoy the Brunswick stew served at the Boy Scouts booth Heather Herzog, of Port Richey, and her mother, Debbie Denamen, of Hudson, also made the trek to do a bit of shopping.

They had plenty of choices. There were booths indoors and out — offering handcrafted jewelry and home décor, soaps and candles, paintings, photographs, gourmet sauces and dips, and handmade clothing and quilts, among other things. Seven-year-old James Kern, of Odessa, took advantage of the opportunity to hand-deliver his Christmas wish list to Santa.Among the items he would like are a Hess truck, Disney passes and Play-Doh. Karen Lee Kulas, owner of ExclusiveLee Designed, a new vendor at this year’s event, had not considered there wouldn’t be electricity in her booth. So, she improvised. She shined a flashlight on her handcrafted pendants, to show off sparkling opals, agate, jaspers and fossil jewelry. Kulas, a snowbird from Wisconsin who winters in St. Petersburg, was at the festival, with her husband, Mike. Event admission was free, but a $5 parking fee was collected to benefit Keystone Prep High School. The festival is the largest fundraising event for the GFWC Lutz-Land O’Lakes Woman’s Club, which uses the proceeds to support scholarships and numerous local community causes.

Six-year-old Nola Barber, of Lutz, left, and her 9-year-old sister, Crosby, search through a large bin filled with name engraved ceramic pendants used to make necklaces at the booth owned by Lora Thomas. They were hunting for the names of their beloved horses.

Seven-month-old Lincoln Reilly, of Tampa, sports cool shades while napping in the comfort of the baby carrier worn by his mother, Nicole. His grandmother, Mary Lynn, said she and her daughter attend the festival every year, and were thrilled this year to introduce the tradition to a new generation of the family.

Bonnie Duvall, left, and her friend Judy Curry, both of Wesley Chapel, admire the handcrafted Christmas wreaths made by shop owner Carol Matthews. At the Burn Out Candle Company shop, Gail Allison, of Floral City, smells the inviting scent of a sandalwood soy candle. The shop owners are Allan and Vicki Spires, of Lake Placid.

These 8-year-olds, Willa Jeckel, left, and Sophia Shelhart, were not about to let a little rain put a damper on their day of shopping. The girls, both from Tampa, make good use of a pink butterfly umbrella on the afternoon of Dec. 1 at the 39th annual Juried Arts & Crafts Holiday Show.

PET PAWS Toilet bowl a no-no Penn News Service of the University of Pennsylvania issued a news release stating that the toilet bowl is a no-no for dogs. To a dog, the bowl may look like an oversized water dish, but there are reasons that pet owners should keep canine companions from quenching their thirst in the bathroom. According to Shelley Rankin, a microbiologist at the university’s School of Veterinary Medicine, microorganisms in the toilet can be harmful to furry friends. Rankin said, in the release,“We don’t put bleach down there every time we go to the toilet, which means that dogs are occasionally coming into contact with organisms that can potentially make them sick.” Zoonotic diseases (those that can infect both humans and animals) can also make the leap in the other direction, from pet to person.

There is a simple, free way to eliminate the risk: Close the lid.

You’re probably well aware that a stroke is dangerous; a blockage has cut off, or interrupted, the blood flow to your brain. Tick. Tick. Tick. The blockage needs to be removed, oxygen restored.
