Remedying a massive sinkhole in Land O’ Lakes has taken a minor step forward, four months after it opened and swallowed two homes on Ocean Pines Drive in Lake Padgett. Residents of the Lake Padgett community were presented several preliminary solutions for fixing the sinkhole long-term, during a Nov. 8 meeting at the Land O’ Lakes Community Center. The audience also had the opportunity to ask questions and offer input to county officials.

Kevin Guthrie, assistant county administrative of public safety, led the meeting. He offered up three possible solutions for “success” in the sinkhole’s remediation: • Build a fence around the sinkhole with a cul de sac on each side (estimated cost of $1.7 million) • Connect the sinkhole to Lake Saxon while adding a cul de sac to each side of the lake (estimated cost of $2.5 million) • Rebuild the original road through the sinkhole (estimated cost of $800,000) The first two options would require the county to purchase several properties, either to connect the sinkhole to Lake Saxon and/or
develop a cul de sac. The third option, meanwhile, requires the reconstruction of Ocean Pines Drive using a sheet piling methodology. Fences then would be placed around bodies of water on either side of the road — similar to how retention ponds have fences around them. A fourth option consists of leaving the sinkhole “as is,” adding a chain-link fence and signage around its perimeter. The option would cost about $50,000. Denham Oaks Elementary School was awash in red, white and blue as children and staff offered a warm welcome to about 75 area veterans at a Nov. 10 celebration. As they arrived, a series of signs posted outside the school honored the men and women who have served in the nation’s military. There were posters and other artworks all over campus carrying the same message of gratitude. Fourth- and fifth-graders expressed their appreciation through a gallery of patriotic artworks. Adam Thomas envisions Pasco County becoming one of Florida’s “must-see” tourism destinations. Aside from mostly pleasant weather, the county lays its claim to bountiful ecotourism, miles of bike trails, premier multipurpose sports facilities — as well as beaches and resorts. “We have a lot of opportunities,” said Thomas, who is Pasco’s newest tourism director. “Our destination is really primed for success in the future, and ready for success now. We have a lot of key attractions and key different segments in tourism right here...” Thomas, 38, started his $82,000-a-year job in September. He shared his vision for Pasco County’s Office of Tourism Development — which is known as Visit Pasco — during a Nov. 8 luncheon hosted by The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce. He expressed confidence in the county’s tourism offerings, but he said the county’s current strategy “lacks an identity.” “Not one person can identify what our brand is, as a tourism destination,” Thomas told chamber members and county stakeholders gathered at the Fox Hollow Golf Club. Thomas needs to develop a brand strategy that highlights the county’s assets and create a business model that attracts not just
locals, but also resonates with people “50 miles and beyond.” He noted he has considerable work to do to attract visitors that will produce economic impact over the course of the year. Most recently,Thomas served as director of the Citrus County Visitor’s Bureau, since 2013. Before that, he was a minor league baseball player, a career that spanned more than a decade, and took him to three continents and countless cities across the United States. Thomas replaced Doug Traub, who left after just three months on the job as the county’s first tourism director.Traub arrived in Pasco from Lake Havasu,Arizona, where he was the chief executive officer of the visitor and tourism bureau. Pasco County previously had a tourism manager position, but the director’s job expands on those duties to handle long-range strategic goals. In Citrus County, Thomas said tourism generated $11.7 million in sales taxes in 2016, ultimately saving each county household about $197 on taxes that year. “Something that I love about our industry is that it’s no tax burden on the citizens in their household, but it’s providing economic sustainability,”Thomas said. Duplicating results for Pasco, he said, starts with auditing each event and festival coordinated by his office — to determine whether or not they drive hotel room nights and create an economic impact that “brings the highest yield of investment.”

Avalon Park West in Wesley Chapel announced its first commercial tenant for the master-planned community’s “town center.� Power Martial Arts signed a five-year lease for about 2,500 square feet of retail space in Downtown Avalon Park West, according to a news release from Avalon Park Group. A groundbreaking is expected in 2018, with a grand opening in 2019. Power Martial Arts currently operates at the Lake Bernadette Community Center in Zephyrhills. The town center for Avalon Park West is planned as a central gathering spot for residents in the Wesley Chapel area. “We’re very excited about getting this place, a permanent home to teach martial arts to the community,� Matthew Brown, the
owner of Power Martial Arts, said in a written statement.“To be part of the launch of this great concept will be a great adventure.� Avalon Park West is at 33613 State Road 54, about 7.5 miles east of Interstate 75. It is within easy access of The Shops at Wiregrass and The Groves at Wesley Chapel. At build out, the community will have about 4,800 residences, including singlefamily houses and apartments. About 560,000 square feet of commercial space and about 120,000 square feet of offices are planned. Avalon Park Group, based in Orlando, has already built or is currently building about 700 single-family homes. Cindy Ross of RP&G is asking guests to come build a bear that they would be willing to donate to a child in the local,Wesley Chapel area elementary schools.The event was inspired by Ross’ daughter, Miranda, who came up with the idea while she was a student at Wesley Chapel High School. Last year, the fundraiser yielded 70 bears, with a total estimated value of $1,100.The
schools have already been contacted to get a count of their needs.This year, if more than 160 bears are made to be donated, other area elementary schools will benefit as well. If you cannot join in at one of the above times, those interested can stop by the Build-A-Bear shop at anytime to make a stuffed animal, and then drop off their donation at RP&G Printing, 2664 Cypress Ridge Blvd., Suite 104, in Wesley Chapel, before Nov. 27. W
hen it comes to Southern pies, Florida has its famous Key Lime pie. Georgia has a classic Buttermilk Custard pie. And, North Carolina has its Chocolate Chess pie. But when it comes to the fall, seasonal favorites are apple, pecan, pumpkin and sweet potato — in alphabetical order. That’s because the ingredients needed for the seasonal pies are at their peak. And, it turns out that these pies often add the exclamation to a traditional Thanksgiving feast. Many recipes are passed from one generation to the next, to carry on the family traditions. Last year, the editors of Delish conducted a national Favorite Turkey Day Pie survey, which revealed that pumpkin remains the No. 1 favorite, with 36 percent of those polled choosing it. Pecan pie came in second, with 15 percent of the vote. Apple came in third, at 14 percent, sweet potato pie garnered 10 percent of the top votes and chocolate pie scored 8 percent.The remaining pies — cherry, blueberry, lemon meringue and others — received 5 percent of the votes or fewer. The survey data was broken down even more. Evidently, pumpkin is more popular in the western part of that nation, where 46 percent ranked it first, compared to 39 percent of Midwestern voters and 33 percent of northeastern. Surprisingly, pumpkin pies scored only 30 percent of the top vote in the South. Among age groups, pecan pie scored the second highest votes and apple pie ranked third, among Gen Xers, between the ages of 38 and 53. Pumpkin pie was most popular with the baby boomers, ages 54 to 72; and traditionalists, ages 54 to 72 , but slightly less than a third of millennials, ages 18 to 37, ranked pumpkin pie first.
Pumpkin-Pecan Pie with Cinnamon-Pecan Crust and Streusel Topping INGREDIENTS Crust: ½ (14.1-ounce package) ready-prepared/refrigerated piecrusts Spray cooking oil ½ teaspoon cinnamon sugar 1½ tablespoons finely chopped pecans, toasted Filling: 1 can (15 ounce) pumpkin (not pie mix filling) 1 cup fat-free evaporated milk ½ cup light brown sugar, firmly packed 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 ½ teaspoons pumpkin pie spice 1/4 teaspoon salt Topping: ¾ cup pecan halves, coarsely chopped 1/3 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons butter, melted ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
• In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together pumpkin, milk, sugar, eggs, spice and salt. Pour into pie plate. • In another bowl, add together all topping ingredients, mix well, and set aside. • Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove pie from oven. Carefully cover edges with a 3-inch wide strip of aluminum foil to prevent burning and return to oven for 40 more minutes. • Remove pie from oven. Remove aluminum and add streusel topping. Return to oven for 15 minutes to 20 minutes. You may have to cover top of pie with aluminum foil after 10 minutes to prevent topping from burning. • Cool completely on a wire rack. Makes 8 servings. Leftovers must be refrigerated.
Apple-Cranberry Pie with Cinnamon Crust INGREDIENTS Crust: 1 package (14.1 ounce) / two ready-prepared/refrigerated piecrusts Spray cooking oil 1 teaspoon cinnamon sugar, divided
Instructions: • Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. • Open package and remove one roll/pie crust. Bring to room temperature and then unroll into a 9-inch pie plate, lightly-greased (with spray cooking oil). • Evenly sprinkle dough lightly with cinnamon sugar and pecans. Lightly press into dough with back of spoon. Fold under edges and crimp into points with fingers, or with tines of fork, and set aside.

COOKING TIPS: • Use a prepared pie crust. That saves time, trouble and cleanup. If crusts are refrigerated, rest on counter for approximately 15 minutes to reach room

Sprinkle ½ teaspoon cinnamon sugar on each side of crust before pressing into a 9-inch pie plate, lightly-greased (with spray cooking oil). Set other roll aside. • In a bowl, combine sugar, lemon juice, flour, salt and spices. Stir in apples and cranberries. • Turn fruit mixture into pastry-lined pie plate. Dot with butter pieces. • Cover with top crust. Fold under and crimp edges to seal. Cut several slits in top. • Brush crust lightly with water and sprinkle cinnamon sugar. • Bake 15 minutes. Cover edge with 3-inch wide aluminum strip and continue baking. • Bake approximately 25 minutes to 35 minutes more, until crust is brown and juices begins to bubble thru the slits in the top crust. Let cool 2 hours before cutting.

The Pasco County Commission has renamed the community center and park in Land O’ Lakes as the Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park. Commissioners adopted the new name on Nov. 7, at the request of Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore. “They are trying to have more of an identity in that area,” said Moore.“I think they’ll be excited by this.” Moore said he consulted with members of the board of directors for the Heritage Foundation before making the suggestion. The word “heritage,” it appears, is becoming a unifier in that effort. A newly built Heritage Stage made its debut in August at the park. And, the Heritage Park Foundation, is a longtime voice of advocacy for the community at large, as well as the park. The foundation grew out of initial efforts to preserve the parkland, and later attempts to raise money to build a stage for community gatherings at the park. The completion of the stage marked a major milestone for the foundation, which had long pushed for improving opportunities for community unity, through social gatherings in the park. More is on the way as the foundation plans to install a story board to honor Land O’ Lakes’ history, and the park.“There’s a history of the park being a community-built

The outdoor stage was built through a partnership between Pasco County, Pasco County Schools, the Florida legislature, local businesses and volunteers. A Pops in the Park holiday performance, featuring the brass section of the Florida Orchestra, is planned for December. The new name could have another benefit. For years, the Land O’ Lakes Community Center has been located at 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., and the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, at 3032 Collier Parkway. The similarity of names has been a source of confusion. “I can’t tell you how many times I’d hear people say ‘I thought it was at the rec center’,” Graves said. There was some discussion about renaming the park Heritage Park, but keeping the name of the community center intact. Paula O’ Neil, Pasco’s clerk of court and comptroller, favored renaming the entire complex to create greater clarity. County commissioners and county staff also supported one name. With the name change, that leaves a wellworn sign outside the community center, with the old name. That’s not expected to last long. “You’ve renamed the park. So, get ready for a new sign,” Moore said.

CONSTITUTION ESSAY WINNERS The Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller’s fifth annual Constitution Essay Contest drew a record 72 entries, nearly 70 percent more than in 2016. The top prize in the contest was awarded to Bailey Keyes, a fifth-grader at Trinity Elementary School, for “her grasp of individual liberties guaranteed by the Constitution,” and noting personal examples along with her “clear beginning and logical ending,” according to a press release. Ryleigh McQueen, a fifth-grader at Woodland Elementary School, won second place; and, Nathan Grimes, a fifth-grader at Trinity Elementary School, won third place. The winners will be awarded trophies at the Pasco County School Board meeting Dec. 19. Keyes also will receive a tour of the Pasco courthouse of her choice, plus lunch with Clerk & Comptroller Paula S. O’ Neil.
STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MANUFACTURING DAY Manufacturing Day activities throughout Pasco and Hernando counties drew the participation of more than 2,000 students. Approximately 500 students attended tours of local manufacturers, while 1,800 more students throughout Pasco and Hernando high schools and middle schools were educated about manufacturing through a virtual tour of a local Pasco County manufacturer,Arete Industries. Two local fundraisers also took place, as well as library events to inform the public about manufacturing, and the opportunities manufacturing offers to jobseekers and the local economy.
TIMOTHY BEARD JOINS TECH COUNCIL Timothy Beard, Ph.D., president of Pasco-Hernando State College, is the newest member of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.
Beard joined PHSC in 2007 as the vice president of student development and enrollment management, after more than 30 years in education and student services. He was selected to serve as the college’s fourth president in 2015. Enrollment at PHSC has increased by 40 percent under Beard’s leadership. Beard’s expertise and knowledge in higher education and workforce development will help guide The Corridor in its mission to grow high tech industry and innovation through partnerships that support research, marketing, workforce and entrepreneurship.

SINKHOLE, from page 1A term recovery efforts at the sinkhole site. The sinkhole opened on July 14 at 21825 Ocean Pines Drive, and swallowed two homes, a motorcycle and a boat. Five more houses on both sides of Ocean Pines have been condemned. On July 31, the county approved $1.3 million for an initial cleanup of debris, and stabilization of the site.That work has been completed. Guthrie said additional geotechnical investigation is required before any remediation can be done, which would cost an additional $100,000 to $200,000. The University of South Florida also is recommending a resistivity survey be completed to determine how the sinkhole interacts with underground surrounding areas. The cost would be another $15,000. Dr. Lori Collins is a research professor at USF, and is a part of the team of geologists and postgraduate students researching the sinkhole since Day 1. She explained further testing is needed to truly understand how the sinkhole penetrates the Florida aquifer and connects to the lake system. “We want to make sure science tells us what the alternates should be first. Right now we don’t know…what’s going on underneath the ground,” Collins said. The necessary prep work could take another 45 days, Guthrie said, before a final recommendation is presented to county commissioners. “We want to do it right the first time and not keep coming back, time and time again,” Guthrie said. Since the sinkhole involves private property and a county road, the county is a stakeholder in the situation. Had the sinkhole never touched the roadway, it would’ve strictly been a private property issue, Guthrie said.

Regarding funding, Guthrie mentioned municipal service taxing units (MSTU) or municipal services benefit unit (MSBU) as options that have been used in the past. Utilizing the county’s general fund reserves is another possibility. However, the county is already “significantly dipping” into those reserves following Hurricane Irma, Guthrie said. Assistance through grants and the state also will be vetted, he said. “We’re trying to get whatever we can,” Guthrie said.“It’s going to be very difficult… to help pay for this.” Terence Doohen was one of several sinkhole victims who attended the Nov. 8 meeting. He said the public forum proved beneficial to affected homeowners and community members. “I felt there was some good information there that had not been communicated to me,” he said,“so I thought it was well worth my time and some other people’s time.” The 44-year-old, along with his wife and 10-year-old son, in August had their lakeside property red-tagged by the Pasco County Building Inspectors Office. Doohen said he’s in favor of “whatever is the safest solution for everyone involved.” “I would go to bat for long-term, whichever is the safest option,” he said. Doohen also supports the county taking a thorough look at the sinkhole matter before making any major decisions. “I’m fine with the time that’s gone by,” he said “I think it’s fine, if everybody’s dotting all the ‘i’s and crossing all the t’s, and if it moves at a little bit slower pace than one expected; I think you’ve just got to kind of live with it and roll with it.” Several additional community meetings are expected over the next several months. Guthrie acknowledged the sinkhole matter will be handled in a methodical fashion, likely extending well into 2018. “We are at step one on a ladder that’s probably about 10 stories long,” Guthrie said.

Thomas pointed out the county spent a combined $694,000 on the three-day event over the last seven years alone. “That’s a $94,000 (annual) bill for us, with 80 percent of the rooms going to Tampa. Is that a good business decision?” he asked. “It’s really not all about heads and beds. It’s about getting the right event or the right audience in our destination to create the highest economic impact and the highest visitor expenditure.That’s going to offset costs, again, to the local community in the sales tax,” he said. He also detailed some of his long-term ideas. He said he wants to lure more small conferences and trade associations — with various incentive packages — to places such as Saddlebrook Resort & Spa and the forthcoming Wiregrass Sports Complex, both of which offer thousands of square feet of meeting space, along with numerous recreation opportunities. “These are small, little initiatives that can really make an impact to the entire community,”Thomas said. He also wants to popularize scallop harvesting in west Pasco, with the approval of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Scalloping was a draw for traveling families in Citrus County between June and September, he said. Drawing other profitable sporting events and fishing tournaments are definite possibilities, too. Elsewhere,Thomas wants to furnish interactive kiosks and mobile video displays to promote the county at events and trade shows. He noted other communities have introduced digital billboards, videos and virtual reality to portray their respective various
tourist attractions. “There’s a lot of things our office hasn’t been doing in the past that we need to be doing moving forward,” he said. “We’re behind the eight-ball a little bit...” Meanwhile,Thomas plans to completely rebrand “Visit Pasco” during the next several months. He plans to have a consulting firm in place by January to help with new branding, as well as marketing efforts. The process could take anywhere from six months to eight months, he said. “We first have to identify who our target audience is...and we have to do that through a brand and research strategy where a firm comes in and works directly with our events holders, our properties, to actually find out who’s coming here and why,” he explained. “We have some really key attractions, but it’s all going to be a part of the brand umbrella,”Thomas said. Whatever slogan is selected, Thomas wants Pasco to identify as an entirely separate entity from Tampa — not merely an extension of it. “We want to pull ourselves away from Tampa,” he said, “and the only way we’re going to be able to do that is with the brand strategy to be a standalone competing destination for it. “We don’t want to be a room night, a day trip from Tampa into Pasco.We don’t want to be a bedroom community to Tampa,”Thomas said. Thomas and his staff of two will have a budget based on the recent doubling of Pasco’s tourism tax, to 4 percent from 2 percent. The surcharge on overnight hotel stays and other short-term rentals had remained at 2 percent for 26 years, until August. Pasco officials estimate the additional 2 percent tourism tax will generate an additional $1.2 million in fiscal 2018, which began Oct. 11.

It’s also the only event where
we can get the entire school — because of the numbers — all together at the same time,” Mark said. “All of the kids are getting into it,” Partain said. Cornelius agreed. “It’s special because they see the value of what our vets did for us.” Barbosa also noted:“When we’re teaching these songs, we’re teaching them what it means to be a veteran.We’re teaching them why this country is so great and what makes it so great.” Edwin Aguiar said he couldn’t resist attending the ceremony. “My granddaughters (Lilliana Nazar and Gracey Jayska) — you cannot say ‘No’ to them, so I decided to take the day off and come in,”Aguiar said. Derrick Jayska, another Army veteran, is

He said he also has a niece and nephew at the school. “It’s awesome to come out and see all of the stuff they did.” “It’s nice to see that they’re teaching them the history behind things.” Caryl Wheeler, a spectator, from Lutz, was pleased that her husband and other veterans were honored. She also was impressed by the ornament and greeting cards the children made for veterans to take home. “They thought enough to give this to our veterans, the people who served our country — when there is so much hatred now for the American flag,”Wheeler said. “I’m glad that this school and other schools throughout Pasco County are doing a great job of promoting the flag and the country,” she added.

and O’ Lakes High School’s varsity football program will have a new leader in 2018. Brian Wachtel, the Gators head coach since 2011, stepped down following the team’s final regular season game on Nov. 3 — a 36-6 win over Fivay High School. Wachtel, 39, announced his decision to principal Ric Mellin prior to the game. Land O’ Lakes athletic director Michael Frump said the school will advertise the coaching vacancy after the Thanksgiving holiday The Gators finished the 2017 season 4-5 overall, with a 1-3 district mark. Wachtel’s entire seven-year run offered mixed results. He posted just one winning season (8-2 in 2013) and a combined 25-42 record — including an 0-10 mark in 2011 where games were forfeited as a result of an ineligible player.

Wachtel came to Land O’ Lakes with considerable fanfare in 2011, after posting a 13-7 record in two seasons at Mitchell High School. His career as a coach began nearly 15 years ago as an assistant at his alma mater River Ridge High School, where he quickly rose up the ranks in the profession. Land O’ Lakes historically has fielded one of the top football programs in Pasco County, earning a string of 14 straight playoff appearances from 1997 to 2009 under coaches John Benedetto and Matt Kitchie. However, the recent success of other programs in the county and an ever-challenging district made winning consistently a tall task. While the Gators win-loss column left much to be desired, Wachtel and his staff mentored several athletes who advanced to the college ranks, at the NCAA Division I, II and III, and NAIA levels. Among them is Samford University’s Shaheed Salmon, a pre-
season FCS All-American who’s quickly developed into one of the nation’s most productive linebackers. Additionally, Wachtel this year coached five players who’ve been selected to the Pasco County Senior East-West Classic— wide receiver Taylor Winn, offensive tackle Justin Collier, offensive guard Guston Farr, defensive tackle Xavier Arroyo and linebacker Matt Geiger. Projecting forward, the Gators next coach should have budding talent to work with — on both sides of the ball — in 2018. Leading rusher Kyle Leivas, who tallied 1,050 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, is expected to return for his senior season, teaming up with a promising quarterback Ethan Forrester, who will be a junior next year. And, that’s not all. The Gators defense is expected to return its top three tacklers in linebackers Myron Bloom (76 tackles, two sacks) and Clayton Hendriksen (75 tackles, 1.5 sacks), and safety Nate Howard (66 tackles, one interception).

he ninth annual SwampFest attracted people from across Tampa Bay to enjoy rides, music, fair foods and games.The event, hosted by the Land O’ Lakes High School Booster Club, seeks to provide a chance to have fun, while raising money to benefit venues selling armbands for the event. In previous years, for instance, SwampFest proceeds were used to purchase equipment for the weight room at Land O’ Lakes High School. By doing that, all of the school’s students benefit, not just a particular team, according to Doug Hutchinson, who has coordinated the event for years. Event proceeds also paid for the high school’s sign, which is out near Land O’ Lakes Boulevard, also known as U.S. 41.

PET PAWS CONNECTING VETERANS WITH SERVICE DOGS Pasco County Animal Services is working with K-9 Partners for Patriots to help connect veterans with service dogs. Specially trained service dogs can help veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Military Sexual Trauma (MST). The K9 organization, a Brooksville nonprofit, trains veterans and their service dogs together through a 19-week program that helps veterans cope with stress and anxiety. Pasco County Animal Services has shelter pets considered as candidates for the training program. Dogs qualify if they are able to pick upon the scent of adrenaline. Animal Services staff members then select dogs based on assessments performed at the shelter, and K9 Partners for Patriots further assesses pets for temperament and service dog potential.
The service dogs, training and equipment are available to participating veterans at no cost. Pasco County Animal Services has place more than 15 dogs with the K9 organization and will continue to help find suitable canine candidates for the program.
ADOPTION FEES WAIVED The Citrus County Animal Shelter is over capacity, and dogs continue to come into the shelter on a daily basis. In an effort to clear out the kennels and make room for more dogs, the shelter is waiving adoption fees until further notice on all dogs that are currently available for adoption. The recently seized dogs are not available for adoption at this time. Citrus County residents, however, will be required to pay $10 for a county registration tag. LENNAR JOINS PASCO EDC Mark Metheny,Tampa division president of Lennar Homes joined the board of directors of the Pasco Economic Development Council. WOMEN-OWNED BUSINESSES Florida has an estimated one million women-owned businesses that employ nearly 500,000 people, and report nearly $94 billion in revenues, according to the seventh annual State of Women-Owned Businesses Report. The report is commissioned by American Express OPEN, and relies on data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Business Owners.The report also looks at relative changes in the Gross Domestic Product, or GDP. The report analyzes data by industry, revenue and employment size at the national and state levels, as well as the top 50 metropolitan areas. It also reviews national growth trends over the past 20 years in women-owned businesses.There currently are about 11.6 million women-owned businesses, with nine million people employed, and about $1.7 trillion in revenues. Nationally, the number of womenowned businesses increased about 114 percent in the last decade, the report found. That’s a growth rate about 2.5 times faster than the national average. In comparison, all businesses in that same period increased only 44 percent. Florida is ranked second in growth of the number of women-owned businesses in the past 20 years, with a 208 percent in-

LENNAR’S SOLAR HOMES Lennar Homes is building 28 solarpowered homes in Bexley Courtyard, a new community within the Bexley master-planned development in Land O’ Lakes, off State Road 54 at Suncoast Parkway. Bexley Courtyard, at 17295 Brighton Lake Road, will be the home builder’s first solar-powered community in the Tampa Bay area. Its solar panels are from SunStreet, which uses an advanced solar power technology that produces more renewable energy than most traditional solar panels. In addition to the solar-powered homes, Lennar will have single-family homes and townhomes with standard energy in other areas of the community. Bexley Courtyard will have four floor plans with about 1,800 square feet to about 2,500 square feet.The solar energy is included in the price of each home.All equipment comes pre-installed and ready for activation. Homeowners would pay a fixed monthly fee to SunStreet that never in-
creases based on energy consumption. Energy produced, but not used, is sent to the homeowner’s utility provider. It may be used as a credit, based on the provider’s policies and procedures. In cases where the homeowner needs more energy than the solar panels produce, additional energy comes from the utility provider. Credits may be used to offset the cost. Lennar, with SunStreet as partner, has about 200 solar-powered communities nationally. Babcock Ranch, a masterplanned community in southwest Florida, for instance, will run mostly on solar energy and will have about 20,000 homes at build out. Florida, known as the Sunshine State, has lagged other states in solar power. According to a June 2017 report by Solar Energy industries Association, the state ranks third in solar capacity potential, but 13th nationally for installed solar capacity. They don’t look like elves, but a quartet of International Baccalaureate students from Land O’ Lakes High School has set off on a mission to make the holidays merrier for preschoolers in foster care. The IB students — Deah Bhojani, Geanna Alamares,Ariana Rao and Angelina Rodriguez — dreamed up the idea for an operation they’ve dubbed “Stocking Stuffers.” It’s a simple concept, but the teenagers hope it will have a profound impact on the children receiving the holiday stockings. And, they’re asking for the community’s help. To get things started, the young women set out collection boxes on Nov. 1 at the clubhouse at Wilderness Lake Preserve, Lake Bernadette and Meadow Pointe. They also placed two boxes at Land O’ Lakes High School. Those wanting to help can either donate a stocking that’s already been stuffed, or can contribute items to help stuff a stocking. Since the stockings will be given to preschoolers, the gift items should target that age group. Small purses, little cars, coloring books, art supplies, costume jewelry, dolls, stuffed animals and puzzles are the kinds of items they’re seeking to collect. The idea is for the item to be small enough to fit in a stocking, but not small enough to pose any kind of hazard to a young child.

The organizers also are asking contributors to refrain from donating any type of food. The collection boxes will remain up through Dec. 11. The young women also are appealing to large businesses that may buy in bulk to donate some items for the cause. Bhojani said she came up with the idea because her dad owns a preschool, and some of the children he serves come from foster families. She also volunteered to feed the home-
less and saw firsthand how those children struggle. She saw a young boy who was freezing cold. “He was wearing shorts and a jacket that was way too small for him,” she said. “I’ve just been very fortunate. I’ve never really had to go through the holidays without family and support,” she said.“So, I just wanted to do something for kids who might not be as lucky as I am during this time of the year.” She also noted that many people give to
large charities that help people in far-away places, but people sometimes fail to notice the need for help right here. Rodriguez said she wants to help share Christmas joy. “To me, Christmas is a season of giving, and love and charity. I love Christmas. I’ve always loved it,” she said. Alamares said she wanted to get involved because she understands there are people who are much less fortunate, including some of her own relatives who live in the Philippines. She also has seen that need locally. When she did some volunteer work at Tampa General Hospital on the children’s floor, she met children who live in difficult conditions. “It was eye-opening for me,” she said. Rao said the idea appealed to her because she could see that it’s the kind of project where “small gestures can have a broad effect.” The IB students hope to collect at least 50 stockings to distribute to foster children through the Early Learning Coalition of Pasco County. That’s one goal they hope to exceed.
