Wiregrass Sports Park on new path? By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

The future of the Wiregrass Sports Park is in play, again. A new call for proposals will be issued within the next month seeking developers who want to partner with Pasco County in building and operating a field house for indoor sports such as basketball, wrestling

and volleyball. The project also envisions the potential for four or five outdoor ball fields. And, eventually there could be tourist attractions such as an indoor zipline, indoor skydiving, and a driving range. But, even as the county puts the project out for bid, negotiations are under way on a new proposal from the Porter family, who have played a considerable role in influenc-

ing the development of the area. The family previously owned the land now occupied by The Shops at Wiregrass, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, PascoHernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, as well as residential subdivisions and public schools. The Porters donated more than 200 See PARK, page15A

Pasco’s tourism figures are rising By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When the final tourism numbers are in, Pasco County’s tourism manager believes the county will be issuing a report on a record year for the county. “I’m actually probably going to have a record year, once I see September’s numbers. The average daily room rate is up about 10 percent across the board,” said Ed Caum, tourism manager for Pasco County.“It’s pretty exciting.” FILE PHOTO And, the prospects are bright for even Tree Hoppers is an aerial adventure park in more visitors in the coming year. Opening day a hit Shoppers flock to Tampa Premium Outlets By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Margie Hamman was one of the earliest birds to land at the Tampa Premium Outlets. Almost too early. Her 5:30 a.m. arrival at the fog-shrouded parking lot, off State Road 56, surprised one parking lot attendant who said she should come back later. As she began driving off, a man “in a suit and tie” flagged her down and ushered her back to the parking lot, she said. She was rewarded for early arrival when she came away with a bag full of coveted handbags and the bragging right of being the first customer inside the Coach store when the mall opened at 10 a.m. She got a steal for her 10 designer purses, and then she moved on over to Gap. “I’ll be making a lot of trips to my car,” said Hamman, who drove from Homosassa to her daughter’s home in Odessa the night before.“I’m doing my Christmas shopping.” She was among thousands who thronged the walkways on Oct. 29, the opening day for the highly anticipated outlet mall developed by Simon Property Group. Hamman expects to be back, again and again. The Ellenton Premium Outlets (also a Simon mall) is no longer her go-to destination, especially when she has a daughter living so close to Tampa Premium Outlets. Like Hamman, there are others who will forego outlet malls in Ellenton and Orlando to jingle cash registers in Pasco County instead. The outlet mall will be an economic shot in the arm, Pasco County Commissioner Chairman Ted Schrader, said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We know it’s going to be a very big success, building on this momentum,” he said. “We are so looking forward to shoppers spending so much time in Pasco, maybe looking around, staying and living here.” About 800 people gained full and parttime jobs at the outlet mall, and local labor hired about 500 people to help build it. The outlet mall adds cache to the Tampa Bay region and will help boost tourism, said Ed Caum, Pasco’s tourism manager. Visitors to the area can be expected to spend their money in more than one county and at more than one venue, he said. “It will have a regional influence,” said Caum. “People will fly in to Tampa International Airport. They may stay in Clearwater, but eat at Ulele (in Tampa), and come here to the mall.” Foreign visitors, especially from Canada and Brazil, are frequent shoppers at the Orlando Outlet Mall. And, Caum said Pasco plans to focus some of its marketing on Central and South American countries including Venezuela, Argentina and Mexico. With counties sharing in the tourism

pool, Hillsborough County’s tourism agency, Visit Tampa Bay, will include materials on the Tampa Premium Outlets in its marketing packages at an upcoming trade show in London. “Everything that’s in Pasco, we’re going to be working very closely with them,” said Kevin Wiatrowski, regional media relations manager for Visit Tampa Bay. “All of our materials have this built into it along with our regular stuff. It’s an impressive time to be here.” Wesley Chapel resident Rita Faddoul came from Lebanon more than 20 years ago. She remembers when the community had “one store, one light.” Now, she says relatives coming from Europe will enjoy something unique in her neighborhood. “It’s better than the International Mall,” Faddoul said.“I want to stay until midnight.” Cool vibe and good deals The 441,000-square-foot mall, with its Stephen Yalof, chief executive officer of “Key West” décor, will offer more than 100 Premium Outlets for Simon, talks about the See OUTLETS, page15A

Cybersecurity opportunities expand at Saint Leo By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

In a world where new cyber threats constantly emerge, a new agreement between Saint Leo University and (ISC)2 will expand opportunities at the university in the arena of cybersecurity. (ISC)2 is a nonprofit organization that primarily focuses on education and certification in the field of cybersecurity. Saint Leo University has recently joined (ISC)2 in a Global Academic Partnership. USF and Polk State College are other institutions in the region that also joined (ISC)2’s Global Academic Partnership. “This is one of the largest and most respected organizations that operates in this field, said Dr. Vyas Krishnan, assistant professor of computer science at Saint Leo University. “It’s sort of a gold standard, he added, noting the organization boasts a membership of more than 110,000 cybersecurity professionals worldwide. “They also offer some of the most highly respected certifications in the field of cybersecurity, Krishnan said. The university benefits because the partnership provides Saint Leo students access to educational modules and certification op-

portunities that (ISC)2 provides for professionals, he said. “Since we are a Global Academic Partner, our faculty, ourselves would be providing workshops, seminars and training for some of those certifications, Krishnan said. That will enable Saint Leo students to work with the same faculty that they’ve been taking classes from at the university, he noted.

Additionally, the partnership will give students a chance to interact with working professionals, Krishnan said. The cybersecurity field is constantly evolving, and it’s a field that offers significant employment opportunities, Krishnan said. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 37 percent increase in demand for cybersecurity specialists in the next 10 years, he added. Jobs in this field pay well. Experts can earn from $75,000 to $125,000, with five to 10 years of experience, and the proper certifications, Krishnan said. Many of the certifications required in job postings are certifications provided by (ISC)2, he noted. Through the agreement, (ISC)2 will provide thousands of students and professionals across the states of Florida, Virginia and Georgia, and online students from across the country with the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and certifications. (ISC)2 also sees a benefit by partnering with Saint Leo, because working professionals must earn continuing professional education credits to keep their certifications current. Another benefit is that through interactions between the university, the working professionals and the (ISC)2 consortium, knowledge can be shared in the evolving field, Krishnan said. The interactions will provide a broad view, and raise awareness about emerging threats and new ways to mitigate them.

Cyber criminals are constantly coming up with new ways to steal data or stymie systems. “The frequency is going up. Cyber criminals are becoming more sophisticated, Krishnan said. At the same time, companies and organizations recognize that steps must be taken to ensure that data is protected. “Upper management has fully realized the gravity of the situation, how important it is to protect the assets because there could be legal implications and there could be financial implications, reputation hits, things of that nature, Krishnan said. “The ramifications are huge. The cybersecurity profession is highly technical, Krishnan said. But he added: “It’s also challenging and exciting. “It’s a lot of cat-and-mouse kind of games. “You can see the tracks that they leave behind. You can see how they’re impacting your network, but you cannot see the person. A lot of times, you may not even know where they’re located. Saint Leo University offers a master of science in CyberSecurity and a master’s in Business Administration, with an Information Security Management Specialization. It also offers a bachelor program in Computer Science and the one in Computer Information Systems. Next August, it expects to add a bachelor’s degree in CyberSecurity. All of these degree programs are available in a face-to-face setting or online.

usic festivals can be fun. You get to experience an entire day (or weekend) of diverse musical styles and groups, enjoy the atmosphere and do something different outside. It’s a fun way to spend a weekend. It’s not really a cheap way, though. Festivals can be expensive. It’s not unusual to spend $20 or $30 to get in.And that’s just one day. A festival that runs two or three days can cost $50 to $80. And that’s just for one person. Oh, you weren’t planning on going by yourself? Better empty your wallet. Or, find a better festival. Let me suggest the Hernando Music Fest, which will take place this weekend at Tom Varn Park, 306 Darby Lane in Brooksville. It’s the first year for the festival, and the schedule includes a lot of music, some extra activities for children, and a price point that will make your heart sing. But, first things first. A music festival, naturally, will feature music. And the Hernando Music Fest will have nearly 15 acts spread out over two days, representing talent from area counties. It’s not just one music style, either. Whether you like jazz, rhythm and blues, country, or swing, there’s someone for you scheduled to perform. And, even if you prefer one style to another, an event like this is made for experiencing different genres and appreciating an array of musical talents. You might surprise yourself and find you like something different, after all. So, there are plenty of performances to enjoy, but the music theme isn’t limited to the stage. A music activities tent will feature an instrument “petting zoo” for children, meaning they’ll get some hands-on experi-

ence with instruments they might have never even seen before, including the keyboard, harmonica and saxophone. There also will be art projects, giving them something to take home. The focus on educating and inspiring youth isn’t surprising, since the event is presented by the Hernando County Arts Council, the Hernando Jazz Society, and Stir Up The Gift Talent Organization. There also will be a food court at the festival, with wine and beer available to purchase. Coolers aren’t allowed, so that’s where you’ll go for refreshments throughout the day. So, it seems like a full day of entertain-

ment. Two days, actually. And that’s exactly what the Hernando County Fine Arts Council had in mind. “Our whole goal is to give back to the community what they give to us, and in the meantime to spread the arts,” explained Jan Knowles, project coordinator for the council. If this festival goes well — like their annual Art in the Park that has been a success for many years and draws thousands — they’d like to make it an annual event, she said. There is one thing missing, though: A famous name. That’s what usually anchors a music festival, and that’s what accounts for a festival’s high cost.

Neither exists at the Hernando Music Fest, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a lot of great sounds coming from the stage. They’re locally based acts with a lot of talent and some pretty impressive resumes as well. One of those artists, Jenny Rimmer, performed at last year’s Pasco Music festival, where she served as an opener for the Marshall Tucker Band. If you like country music, from Patsy Cline to Carrie Underwood, you’ll recognize a lot of Rimmer’s songs. She represents several eras in country music, and will perform both days at the festival. So the variety is there, and the talent is there. What’s not there is the price. The Hernando Music Fest is absolutely free. That’s no admission cost either day. The way the sponsoring organizations make money is through the parking fee, which is a paltry $5 donation. Throw in whatever you choose to eat and drink, and it’s still a pretty cheap way to enjoy a couple of days full of music. Just look at what other music festivals are charging, and you’ll see what I mean. This one isn’t too far from home, provides more than a dozen acts, features various styles and like, I said, there’s no admission charge. That’s music to my ears, and my bank account. So, bring a chair or blanket, and have a great time. The Hernando Music Fest runs Nov. 7 from noon until 8 p.m., and Nov. 8 from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. No dogs or coolers are allowed on the premises. For more information and for a lineup of music acts, visit HernandoArts.org, or call Knowles at (352) 279-5182.

This is the first time the event has included the walk for homeless prevention. “We want to get sponsors out to walk and bring donations to the program,” said Brenda Welcher, one of the event’s organizers. “We want to help them become established in the community and as a family.”

The Family Walk for Homeless Prevention will take place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. During the event, former homeless individuals have the opportunity to give testimonies about their struggles and how the Samaritan project has changed their life. This is designed to help inspire others to make a change in their life. Local businesses, vendors, churches, and organizations also are all taking part in this event to support the cause with family games, food, and live entertainment. —Compiled by Taylor Zack, intern for The Laker/Lutz News

Tampa now has a source for heirloom, organic seeds from Seed Savers Exchange. Through a cooperative arrangement with Ecology Florida, the Botanical Gardens at the University of South Florida Tampa, is offering a wide range of organic, heirloom, non-GMO seeds exclusively from Seed Savers Exchange, according to a news release from Ecology Florida. The Botanical Gardens at USF is at 4202 E. Fowler Ave., in Tampa. It will be the second location in all of the West Coast of Florida offering these packaged seeds from Seed Savers Exchange, which is located in Decorah, Iowa, the news release says. The Botanical Gardens joins Rose’s Bistro Off Main in New Port Richey, as the exclusive locations west of the Orlando area, north of Ft. Myers, and south of Tallahassee for gardeners to acquire Seed Savers Exchange’s heirloom, organic seeds. USF Botanical Gardens Director Laurie Walker is committed to sustainability, local gardening, and the ideals of Ecology Florida, the news release says. The Botanical Gardens has long been a leader in sustainable community development and joins other like-minded businesses and the community leaders in the Greater Tampa Bay area that are demonstrating leadership in ecological stewardship, sustainability, and resiliency.

Some of the seed packs will include lettuce, collards, kale, a salsa collection, and many other heirloom, organic vegetable seeds, including some from local farms and gardens. A children’s seed collection that includes a 10-page booklet will help both children and adults learn to plant, save seed, and tell their own seed story. The Botanical Gardens at USF is a 16-acre garden, which is part of the university’s Department of Geography, Environment and Planning in the College of Arts and Sciences. The gardens include a greenbelt area and a living collection of more than 3,000 of plants, animals and natural habitats. The site attracts about 35,000 visitors annually and serves as an outreach component of the university. Plant festivals and other events attract enthusiasts from around the state to shop for rare and unusual plants. The gardens also house ongoing research in medical botany and provide opportunities for student organizations to get involved on campus. Ecology Florida is a Florida-based not-forprofit organization focusing on restoring balance and harmony in the ecologies of nature, culture and economics. This cooperative project with the Botanical Gardens at USF embodies the ideals of Ecology Florida, by bringing heirloom organic seeds into the community, enhancing local culture, and supporting the local economy, according to the news release.

Pasco Upcycle Festival is eco-friendly By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Hauling recyclable cans, bottles and paper to the curb is a habit that is second nature to many people who worry about the environment. But, how about getting creative and upcycling a few items? Take a pair of jeans and repurpose them as aprons. Or take costume jewelry and fabric scraps, and use them to make bookmarks. Upcycling is defined as the process of transforming a recyclable item in to a new product of better quality or better environmental value, according to Pasco Upcycle Festival organizers. The festival hopes to get people as interested in upcycling as they are in recycling. “What can you do with these items before they ever get to the curb? asked Kristen King, coordinator for Keep Pasco Beautiful. The first-time festival will be on Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Little Everglades Ranch, at 17951 Hamilton Road in Dade City. About 2,500 people are expected to attend. There is no admission charge, but there will be a $5 parking fee collected by the venue to offset some of its costs. As a first time event, there will be no fees collected from vendors. More environmentally friendly vendors are being sought, including those with fresh produce typically sold at farmers’ markets. The festival will feature numerous upcycle vendors, including makers of pallet furniture and jewelry from recycled household items. Vendors also will sell items such as homemade soaps and pepper jellies. Many individual vendors who upcycle as a hobby will offer items including bracelets and pendants from utensils, or aprons made from jeans. A hands-on demonstration will show children how to make bookmarks from recyclable items around the house. Food trucks, including Hillbilly Farms and Philou’s Cajun on the Geaux, will be on site. Bluegrass bands, the Michigan Misfits and Mean Mary, will provide entertainment. “We are so excited to launch this new event, King said, in a press release announcing the festival. “It gives us the opportunity

Early detection may help prevent diabetes The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

More than 1 million Americans are diagnosed annually with diabetes, and while it is a condition that can be largely be managed through proper diet, exercise and medication, many people with diabetes will develop serious health complications during their lives. That’s why diabetes screenings are so important. With early detection, most individuals can make the lifestyle changes necessary to avoid developing the disease, according to a news release from Bayfront Health Dade City. “Often patients who have prediabetes aren’t even experiencing symptoms,” said Dr. Joseph Nystrom, a family practice physician, in the new release. “If we can test at-risk patients and catch the condition early, we can often help them avoid diabetes and associated health problems, such as glaucoma, kidney disease and heart disease,” Nystrom added. Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose, or sugar, in the blood. Those who have prediabetes have blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as fullblown diabetes, the release states. According to the American Diabetes Association, 86 million Americans aged 20 and older had prediabetes in 2012 and more than 29 million Americans had diabetes. Physicians previously tested for diabetes and prediabetes by administering a glucose

tolerance test, which required patients to fast for several hours before having blood drawn for a lab test. The test would give patients a score, with those scoring higher than 100 considered prediabetic and those scoring 126 or higher considered diabetic. But physicians recently have begun favoring a different method of diabetes testing, called the A1C test. This test can provide a more accurate assessment by measuring the average level of glucose in the blood over the previous two to three months. An A1C level of 5.6 is considered normal, 5.7 is considered prediabetes and 6.5 or higher is considered diabetic. “We recommend individuals who are at elevated risk for diabetes, particularly those with a family history, get tested annually,” Nystrom added. Although genetics can contribute to the risk of developing diabetes, individuals who are overweight, physically inactive, have high blood pressure, certain racial heritage (African-American, Latino, Native American, Asian-American and Pacific Islander) and a history of gestational diabetes are among those at increased risk. Individuals who are concerned about their diabetes risk, or who have been diagnosed with the disease, should see their primary care physician, Nystrom recommended. By working closely with their physician, the condition can be managed or even prevented. If you need assistance finding a doctor, call (877) 362-5321 or visit BayfrontDadeCity.com.

OUTLETS, from page 1A designer brand shops selling top-line merchandise at 25 percent to 65 percent discounts daily. Many stores sweetened the bargains with larger discounts, coupons and giveaways during the mall’s opening weekend from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1. Karen Jenkins, and her mother, Beth McDonald, sat on a bench studying a brochure and a map of the outlet mall. “I’m really just looking to see what they have,” said Jenkins. “If I see something I like, I’ll buy it.” Tampa Premium Outlets has some stores that shoppers won’t find at Ellenton, including Naturalizer and The Limited. The duo registered with the Tampa outlet’s VIP Shopper, and got a few coupons including a discount on Ralph Lauren merchandise. “We’re thrilled we’re not driving to Ellenton,” said Jenkins who lives in Land O’ Lakes. But, she added: “My husband’s not happy about this.” Kaiya Davis and her son, Jamal McIntosh, had a quick hop to the mall, from their new home in Lutz. Davis took the day off to check out the shops. McIntosh is starting a job with the Florida Department of Transportation and soon could be working on highway projects to ease traffic woes at the interchange of Interstate 75 and State Road 56. “Lots of new beginnings,” said Davis. Besides a being new shopping venue, the new homeowner sees an added bonus from the mall. “The price of property values are going to go up,” she said. Another Lutz resident Karen Fortin, and

meet everyone’s expectations. Discussion with the Porters is ongoing. “There are moving parts,” said Gehring. “The geography is not fixed at this time. We’re trying to make it a win-win for as many people as possible.” Gehring said it would take about three weeks to write a proposal for the field house. Bidders would have 60 days to submit their plans. The recommendation to build a field house emerged from a study by Chicagobased Johnson Consulting Co. The facility would be between 85,000 and 100,000 square feet, built on five to seven acres. There would be up to eight basketball courts, four to six multi-purpose rooms and lockers. It would operate under a private/public partnership agreement. By the fifth year of operation, about 100,000 people a year would use the facility, said Charlie Johnson, the company’s president.

In the future, outdoor ball fields could be added, he said. “You can start with indoor, and grow from there,” Johnson said. The field house and the Porter’s future development project is a sound one, said Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore. “To me, we’re getting everything the (Johnson Consulting) report stated but above and beyond,” he said. “I’m excited… looking at it.” Porter said the proposal allows the family to “control our destiny,” while also providing park space to county residents. He anticipates consulting with Pasco parks and recreation officials to determine how to develop the park. “We’ll ask them what they are lacking there,” Porter said. If the land swap is done, he added, “We’d start immediately laying it out as amenities, not just for Wiregrass but everybody.”

her mother, Margaret Carreiro, left Columbia Sportswear, one of their favorite stores, carrying bags containing shoes and a fleece jacket. The travel time to the shopping destination can’t be beat, they said. “We’re right here, 2 minutes from home,” Fortin said. Caralee and Charles Shapero had a longer trip, coming over from Clearwater. But, they might come back. “We will see,” said Caralee Shapero. “It’s missing a Bath & Body Works, but it is closer. So far so good.” They are Yankee Candle enthusiasts and were ready to snap up a deal – five candles for $50. “We’ll be walking out with 10,” said Caralee Shapero. Natalie Scheer and Blanca Jordan sat down on a bench with Disney Store Outlet bags at their feet. They rattled off stores they had been to and others they were ready to take on. “We’re only halfway there,” said Scheer, who along with Jordan, works at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel. They expected to spend two hours to three hours scouring the mall for bargains. “We threw our bags in the car already,” said Jordan. “This is our second round. It’s wonderful. We don’t have to go all the way to Orlando.” Jordan said she sometimes goes to Westfield Citrus Park. But, she added: “Outlets are much better. You get better deals.” The women liked the setting, too. Pasco-Zephyrhills ‘not just another game’ By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Coaches are used to giving stock answers to common questions. Take things one game at a time. Play hard for 60 minutes. And, even if they’re facing a rival, it’s just another game. Zephyrhills head coach Reggie Roberts isn’t toeing that line when it comes to the annual Pasco-Zephyrhills football matchup. “It’s not just another game. It’s the NineMile War,” Roberts said, referring to the distance between the two schools. “This is a rivalry game,” he said. It’s also a game that has hurt Zephyrhills in seasons past. Three of the past four years, a loss to the Pirates cost the Bulldogs a playoff spot. Last season, the game didn’t impact the teams ability to make the playoffs, and it reached the postseason for the first time under Roberts’ tenure. But the Bulldogs still lost to Pasco. For this season’s game, there is no playoff spot on the line. At 7-2, Zephyrhills is already playoff-bound. And at 4-5, Pasco won’t be in the postseason. But the game still means something, and Roberts has nothing but respect for Pasco. “They’ve played some good football,” Roberts said, noting that the Pirates have faced a tough schedule. He also singled out their talented quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., as a player Zephyrhills needs to contain in order to be successful. “We’re not going to sleep on them, thinking that they’re a .500 team. We know better FRED BELLET/STAFF PHOTOS

Zephyrhills practiced hard before the season started, and have been rewarded with a 7-2 record. But, even over the summer, theplayers knew the season-ender against Pasco was going to be an important game.

Zephyrhills coach Reggie Roberts was optimistic over the summer. Now he has even more to smile about, with his Bulldogs in the playoffs for the second straight year.

than that. We know that they’ll be ready to play, and that we’re going to have to play our game,” he said. Pasco has played its game each of Roberts’ five previous seasons as head coach at Zephyrhills. The Bulldogs are 0-5 against the Pirates during his tenure. It’s a far cry from the success he had as a student at Zephyrhills: He never lost to Pasco as a player. Roberts remembers the energy and excitement of the game when he was on the field, and said he won’t need to give a big motivational speech to get his own players ready for the game. “You don’t have to say much,” he said. “If I have to hype a kid up to play that game, I

don’t know if he has blood running through his veins.” Roberts definitely won’t have to hype up receiver Jackie Tucker. The senior wide receiver has been through several of the losses to Pasco, and he wants to finish his high school career as a winner in the rivalry game. Tucker knew they had a lot to prove in this game, even before the season started. “I have to show my doubters what we can do. They say that Pasco’s always been on top in the county. At Zephyrhills, we’re here to show them different,” Tucker said back in August.“It’s going to be a crazy game.” With home-field advantage, Roberts expects the fans to contribute to the

Pasco-Zephyrhills has a built-in playoff atmosphere, and it’s a good way for him to see how the team handles a pressure situation with a lot on the line. It’s up to his players to perform at a high level, but he expects the fans to do their part to keep the enthusiasm level high. “We have a new dog pound section of the stadium. I’m sure that’s going to be packed and faces painted,” he said. “We have the truck pound on the north side of the end zone. With every grand opening comes a ribbon cutting. Here, left to right, Danielle De Vita, senior vice-president of development, Pasco County Commission Chairman Ted Schrader and Stephen Yalof, Simon’s chief executive officer of Premium Outlets, cut the ribbon signaling the opening of Tampa Premium Outlets.

Tampa Premium Outlets enjoys smooth opening By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

T

Overlooking the Lagoon Court, Grace Cann, left, and Joan Johnson, both of New Tampa, found a few moments to relax amidst their shopping at Tampa Premium Outlets.

Fitted with a backpack for shopping, Margie Hamman, far left, of Homosassa, was not only one of the first to arrive at the new outlets on State Road 56, but also was first in line and awaits the opening of the Coach shop last Thursday morning. Hamman bought several handbags during the opening day at Tampa Premium Outlets.

he early morning fog was thick, but a steady stream of vehicles turned into the entrance as the sun was rising at Tampa Premium Outlets. There were plenty of police and mall security on hand to guide cars, as they pulled into the mall’s massive parking lots. Cars were arriving two hours or more before the shopping destination opened its doors to shoppers on Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. Even those who came to see the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which took place 20 minutes before official opening, found that cars were nestled close to the entrance long before any speeches began. By the looks of the cars, the opening attracted a diverse group. Sports cars and SUVs shared the lot with pickup trucks and foreign compacts. Luxury vehicles were parked next to simple economy cars. Some looked brand new; others were a bit past their prime. A little rust here, a new paintjob there, and child-ofthe-month bumper stickers were all part of the parking lot decor on opening day. Before long, good spaces were at a premium. As the mall officially opened, drivers continued making the slow crawl toward empty lots, which filled quickly. Less than an hour after the mall opened, valet parking was full, and cars were directed to an overflow lot.

From the outset, the outdoor mall was ready for the crowds. Police were directing traffic trying to get to the entrance, which competed with the typical morning rush on State Road 56 on a limited-visibility morning. But, there were no delays or gridlock on the roads surrounding the mall. Overall it was a smooth experience, and didn’t get in the way of what people came to see. Despite the music and fanfare, the biggest draw was the stores. Nearly 100 stores were open, and they were well staffed, and ready to welcome patrons into their stores. Some drew plenty of interest, while foot traffic was more modest at others. People lined up at Coach, waiting to get in. Overall, it wasn’t a mad rush of determined bargain hunters like you might find on Black Friday. Instead, it was an interested, patient group, appreciating the spectacle and celebration of a new venue, and taking the time to appreciate the details while they surveyed their new shopping options. The outdoor areas were at least as busy as the shops themselves. Visitors took photos by the mall’s elaborate fountains. They relaxed on benches and chairs. Or, they strolled throughout the mall, getting a feel for the lay of the land. They did plenty of shopping, too. Those scoring opening-day deals became walking billboards for stores like Disney Store Outlet and Under Armour, carrying bags that advertised their morning haul.

Beth McDonald, left, of Odessa, and her daughter, Karen Jenkins, of Land O’ Lakes, look over the schedule of events planned for the grand opening of the new Tampa Premium Outlets.

PET of the WEEK

One excitable lady

Lady is a 6-year-old lab husky mix. She loves to go for rides in the truck and is super-playful. Her ‘watermark’ is that she spins in circles when she gets very excited. Lady’s proud owner is Sara Singleton of Wesley Chapel.

This bird, believed to be an immature black-crowned night heron, was perched on top of John J. Draper’s pool screen in his backyard. He sees hawks, eagles, turkey, sand hill cranes, rabbit, possum, deer, raccoon and fox, but this was the first time he spotted one of these. The adult birds are short-necked, relatively short-legged and stout herons, Draper says.
