By B.C. Manion

A proposal by Moffitt Cancer Center to boost its share of the state’s annual cigarette tax money would support expanded cancer care and research, both in Hillsborough and Pasco counties. The new location in Pasco County would be near the Suncoast Parkway and

State Road 52, and is being viewed by local leaders as having the potential to be a catalyst that would transform the Central Pasco landscape. Moffitt is asking for an increase to its current share of 4% up to 10%, with the increases coming in two phases. The first phase would increase Moffitt’s share of the tax from 4%, up to 7%, which would generate $11 million in additional an-

nual revenue, said Yvette Tremonti, executive vice president chief finance and administrative officer for Moffitt Cancer Center. The second increase would boost Moffitt’s share from 7%, up to 10%.That increase also would generate an additional $11 million in annual revenue for Moffitt. See MOFFITT, page 15A

The Zephyrhills Public Library, 5347 Eighth St., is hosting no-cost weekly basic level chair yoga classes, geared toward helping people of all ages improve their balance, flexibility and range of motion, by using a chair for support in a variety of seated and standing yoga poses. Certified Humana SilverSneakers yoga instructor Cara Godwin teaches her students many simple, modified yoga poses and relaxation exercises that, if practiced regularly, could lead to some very positive health benefits. Godwin said that some of the benefits include stress reduction, mental clarity, improvement in balance (which will help prevent falls), as well as improved flexibility and range of motion (to help with the task of getting up and out of chairs, and automobiles). Chair yoga meets every Wednesday at 1 p.m., and will run through mid-December. Classes are limited and weekly registration is required. For more information or to register, call the Zephyrhills Public Library at (813) 780-0064, or register online at PascoLibraries.org. Above, chair yoga instructor Cara Godwin asks her class to imagine that they are a tree in a hurricane with their branches blowing, in a pose that she describes as a ‘flamboyant’ seated tree pose. Godwin said that she likes to make her classes fun.

School district expands mental health services By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco County school district has been ramping up training and tapping into outside sources, in its quest to build a better mental health support network for students. Statistics from across the school district underscore a compelling need for increased services. District figures show that more than 1,200 suicide assessments were done last year of students in elementary, middle and high schools. The breakdown showed that 463 suicide assessments were reported at the elementary school level; 408 at the middle school level; and, 308 at the high school level. There also were nearly 600 threat assessments across the district, with 278 See HEALTH, page 15A

Playground aims to remove barriers for having fun By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Olivia Campbell, and her parents, were front and center at the future site of a play space that aims to give all children access to fun. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Sept. 20 at Wesley Chapel’s District Park for its new universally inclusive playground – the first in Pasco County. The amenity will be designed to accommodate children who have special needs, such as Olivia, who has Down Syndrome. “Inclusive playgrounds actually make a fundamental statement about how communities value meaningful play experiences for people of all ages and abilities,” said Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore, who helped conceptualize the playground. “We believe in creating play environments where everybody can play, focusing on both the physical and social aspects of inclusion,” Moore said at the gathering, which included Pasco County officials, local residents and representatives from organizations that provided financial support for the project. Moore has spent a fair amount of time at the district park, while coaching teams there. During those times at the park, Moore

said he noticed that there were no suitable accommodations for children with disabilities. Moore talked it over with Keith Wiley, director of Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, and together they began an initiative to create an inclusive playground. In addition to researching other inclusive playgrounds, they spoke with special needs organizations for suggestions.

The new play space will be next to the park’s existing playground, with the two connected by sidewalks. This will come in handy for Olivia, who frequents the park about four times a week to watch her sisters play soccer. Her father, Stuart remarked:“We spend a lot of time at the park, so we’re absolutely ecstatic that they’re doing such a good project. See PLAYGROUND, page 15A

Ridge Road extension permit coming soon, administrator says By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A permit to clear the way for the construction of the Ridge Road Extension is expected to be granted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers within the next four weeks to six weeks, Pasco County Administrator Dan Biles said. That would signal the end of a twodecade effort to secure the federal permit needed to create a new 7.6-mile east-west connection from Moon Lake Road in New Port Richey to U.S. 41, in Land O’ Lakes. The only way for the county to be absolutely sure it will receive the permit is for the Corps of Engineers to issue it, Biles said. “They won’t ever tell you that you’re going to get the permit until they sign the letter on the permit, giving you the permit. They’ll never tell you,‘Yea, you’re going to get approval on the permit’ until then. That isn’t the way the Corps works,” the administrator said. That being said, it appears that everything is lining up toward the county obtaining the permit, Biles told those gathered at Sept. 17 breakfast meeting of The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce at Scotland Yards Golf Club, on U.S. 301 in Dade City. While the county awaits the permit, it is preparing to move ahead with the project. The first phase of the project, which is funded, is from Ridge Road in New Port Richey to the Suncoast Parkway. The second phase of the extension, not yet funded, will provide a link between the Suncoast Parkway and U.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes. Biles told the breakfast crowd:“The construction project is actually on the street today, so we can bid that and start work the day I get the call from the Corps. “We’ve got it set so that, I get the call from the Corps, I call public works, I call the project manager. They get our consultant out there and start removing the gopher tortoises off the right of way. “Our surveying crew is already working on surveying the right of way,” Biles added. The contract includes three milestones, with bonuses available to the contractor if

the work is completed within certain timelines. The Pasco County Commission approved the approach. “It’s pretty unique. It took a lot of work in the county attorney’s office to set it up,” Biles said. The first milestone involves providing a secondary access to River Ridge High and River Ridge Middle, before the school year begins in August 2020. To achieve that, Biles said he would need the permit in hand, and a contractor notice to proceed, by Dec. 1. “That’s a goal to hit that, and we can do it,” Biles said. The second milestone is to have two lanes of Ridge Road open to the Suncoast Parkway, and to have the interchange operational before Hurricane Season 2021, Biles said. “So, we’re going to get there, open up two lanes, we’re going to breathe and relax for about 30 seconds, then they’re going to finish the other two lanes, finish the project by the next hurricane season,” the administrator added. Biles said he wants to get the first two lanes open as quickly as possible, to get traffic onto it to the Suncoast Parkway. That will provide another hurricane evacuation route, and will open up the west-central area of the county to within a “commutable distance” of downtown Tampa, Biles said. It also would be good timing, in conjunction with a new $191 million expansion campus that Moffitt Cancer Center wants to create in Pasco County. Moffitt recently announced it would be asking the state Legislature to increase Moffitt’s share of the state’s cigarette revenue from 4% to 10% to support an expansion of its facilities in Hillsborough County, and to provide for a new campus in Pasco County. The project would allow Moffitt to meet future demand for cancer therapies, create a research park that would be a magnet for biotech partners, and expand its services in the Tampa Bay region, according to information provided by Moffitt.

Bellamy Brothers headline Rattlesnake Festival By Kevin Weiss

53rd annual Rattlesnake Festival

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The Bellamy Brothers are returning to a local festival that launched the beginning of their iconic country music career five decades ago. Darby natives and residents Howard and David Bellamy will headline a special concert at the 53rd annual Rattlesnake Festival on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., at the Pasco County Fairgrounds’ Dan Cannon Auditorium, 36722 State Road 52 in Dade City. The duo will be available to sign autographs at their merchandise tables following their hour-and-a-half long performance. The concert serves as a prelude to the traditional festival days on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20. The Rattlesnake Festival marked The Bellamy Brothers’ first official gig back in 1968 — where Howard and David performed on stage with their father at San Antonio Park. The Bellamys continued to play the festival for several years prior to the the release of their 1976 chart-topping country pop hit, “Let Your Love Flow,” which spearheaded a career of 20 No. 1 hits and 40 million album sales worldwide. In an exclusive interview with The Laker/Lutz News, Howard Bellamy said he’s looking forward to returning to the Rattlesnake Festival and host a concert for his hometown community. “There’s no place we love better. We’ve toured in 72 countries and somehow we always come back to Darby, Florida,” Howard, 73, said. “It’s a special place and special people around, so when they got this all together and asked us, we jumped right on. It’s very special and you get to see a lot of old friends you haven’t seen forever.” He added, “We’re always grateful to be back home because this is where it started and this is where it will end.” Howard and 69-year-old David Bellamy graduated from Pasco High School in the 1960s before embarking on their successful music career. They spend any downtime amid their frenetic showbiz schedule on their 200-acre family ranch in Darby, just outside the Dade City limits.

COURTESY OF RATTLESNAKE FESTIVAL

The Bellamy Brothers are scheduled to perform a special concert at the Rattlesnake Festival on Oct. 18.

When they return to town next month, The Bellamy Brothers will be fresh off an overseas tour that takes them to Norway and Sweden. They’ll immediately head out for a show in North Carolina following the Dade City concert. “We should be well-rehearsed,” Howard quipped. Howard said the special concert’s set list “definitely” will include “Let Your Love Flow” and several other hit tracks. He noted there also will be some cuts from the band’s latest studio album, “Over the Moon,” which released in February. “You know, we do as many hits as we can during the show, and we thank God we have enough of them that we have a choice, so people want to hear the hits,” Howard said. Known for their busy ways, the Bellamys’ appearance comes in the midst of filming the third season of their reality television show, “Honky Tonk Ranch,” airing on the Cowboy Channel. Howard said the band is also working on several other projects with other artists. “We’re always up to something,” he said. The Bellamy Brothers’ last appearance at the festival came about 40 years ago, according to Joe Simmons, executive director of the Thomas Promise Foundation that puts on the Rattlesnake Festival. Simmons said he tried to book The Bellamy Brothers for the event a few years ago, but they were on another road tour at the time. The event organizer went about getting in touch with the band’s manager earlier this time around, to try to work the Rattlesnake Festival into the band’s lineup that includes roughly 150 tour dates every year.

You know, everybody loves The Bellamy Brothers.” Simmons acknowledged The Bellamy Brothers’ forthcoming appearance has generated extra buzz for the weekend long festival.

“Everybody’s excited,” he said. “Everybody loves it when the Bellamys come back home and play and, for us to be able to accommodate that and bring them back, it was a win-win situation.” All proceeds raised from the Rattlesnake Festival will go toward the Thomas Promise Foundation, which provides meals and other programs to food-insecure children. Meet Artist Suzanne Natzke 21 paintings on display at Avalon Park West

T

his Friday’s artist reception at the East Pasco Gallery of the Pasco Fine Arts Council is an opportunity to meet Suzanne Natzke, an accomplished watercolor artist whose works have been recognized nationally. The public is invited to this free community affair between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Avalon Park West Welcome Center in Wesley Chapel. Attendees will also enjoy live music by Jared Violin, and complimentary wine and refreshments. Natzke is a Pasco artist known for her variety of subject matters, including animals, landscapes, florals, and even abstract. “When deciding what to paint, I follow my nose and pursue things that interest me,” said Natzke. The artist has 21 paintings on exhibit at the show — primarily work that has been completed in the past three to four years. “My style is more impressionism than realism, but in recent years it has become more contemporary by using harder edges, which create movement and make my paintings more dramatic,” said Natzke. By comparison, Natzke said traditional watercolor paintings use softer edges, colors that flow and bend, and lines that are lost in the painting. “A painting is a very static, two dimensional thing. I try to bring life to my work by creating a sense of motion – like the wind blowing through a landscape, or a sense that something is about to happen in the scene,” said Natzke. All but two of Natzke’s paintings at the show are watercolor. One is mixed media and the other uses an acrylic Gesso underneath the watercolor to give it texture. Her favorite piece on exhibit is of a young girl with an owl resting on her leather glove, which she calls, “An Owl Named Winston Churchill.” This painting recently received a prestigious honorable mention at a national show hosted by the Georgia Watercolor Society. Natzke regularly enters art competitions in Florida, California and Georgia. These are very competitive shows, with hundreds of entries and only 80 to 100 artists invited to exhibit, she explains. Natzke is proud to be a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society, which means her work has been chosen at least three times to be exhibited at its annual show. A Michigan native, Natzke moved to Florida in 1985. Then in 2001, her family moved to Trinity in West Pasco County, and she had more time to explore her interest in painting. “I was a stay-at-home mom looking for something to do,” said

‘An Owl Named Winston Churchill’ is one of 21 paintings by artist Suzanne Natzke that will be exhibited through Oct. 22 at the Avalon Park West Welcome Center in Wesley Chapel.

‘Moments In Time’ Reception

Natzke. “I had been inspired by all the beautiful artwork at the Tarpon Spring Fine Arts Festival, and thought to myself — now here is something I could do from home.” So, she set up a studio in her Trinity home with the help of her mother, who painted as a hobby. “I quickly realized that I had no idea what I was doing, and really needed classes and direction,” said Natzke. She began taking classes at the Pasco Fine Arts Council in New Port Richey, and kept taking classes for four years, until she developed the skills and techniques to be good enough to begin exhibiting her work. Over the years, she has studied under several local and nationally renowned artists, and today is an instructor herself. Natzke’s very first teacher was Jo

Artist Suzanne Natzke

Baughman, who today is the director of the Pasco Fine Arts Council, the group partnering with Avalon Park West to bring the arts to the east side of Pasco County. One of the main goals of this partnership is to introduce people to local artists with monthly exhibits and demonstrations, and also to offer art classes for youngsters and adults. “People tell me all the time that they could never paint,” said

Natzke. “But, that’s not true. Anyone can learn to paint with lessons, practice, desire and enthusiasm.” And that is exactly the plan for the new East Pasco Gallery of the Pasco Fine Arts Center. “We want to have art classes and workshops for our community, and a place to share artwork created by students and adults,” said Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of marketing and community relations for the Avalon Park Group. “As it turns out, the Pasco Fine Arts Council has been providing these types of programs for years, and all it needed was a place in East Pasco to bring their programs and exhibits to our residents in Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, San Antonio and Dade City. “It is our vision to build Downtown Avalon Park West as the cultural and event center of East

Pasco County.” After Natzke’s “Moment in Time” show closes Oct. 22, a new artist will be featured at the Avalon Park West Welcome Center. A total of six artist exhibits, one competition and two art demonstrations are scheduled for the East Pasco Gallery through next May. Next spring, the Pasco Fine Arts Council is bringing its annual Middle School Photography competition to Avalon Park West. The exhibit, with hundreds of photos by participating Pasco County students, will be on display at a new charter school, Pinecrest Academy Wesley Chapel, that is being built at the entrance to Avalon Park West. Pinecrest will be open for the 202021 school year. “This is a photography competition we hold in conjunction with Pasco County Schools, where students earn first, second and third place recognition in each grade level,” said Baughman. “It is very exciting to finally have a location to put on a show for these youngsters, and to share these outstanding photos with the public.” For more information on the artist schedule and upcoming events, please visit AvalonParkWest.com.

Don’t Settle for an Unqualified Handyman Protect Your Home, Budget and Family by Hiring Professionals

I

t may be tempting to hire a self-proclaimed, jack-ofall-trades handyman to fix your noisy air conditioner, leaky pipes or other homerepair problems. But, here’s the truth — the few dollars you may save now will cost you money later if you need to call in a professional to fix the repairs your handyman did wrong. “The best way to protect your budget and secure your family’s safety is by hiring a professional who is certified and trained to handle your home’s A/C, plumbing or electrical problems,” says Dana Spears, president and owner of Cornerstone Pros in Land O’ Lakes. How can you be certain you are hiring a certified and qualified person when someone recommends their handyman, or you come across a person or company on your neighborhood Facebook page, or see promoted on Nextdoor and other community groups? “It begins with asking lots of questions,” said Spears. “If you’re hiring a company, ask how long they’ve been in business, because they may not still be around when your system needs warranty work, maintenance or repairs. And be sure to ask if their technicians are employees, or subcontractors, to be sure they will stand behind the work of their people. If you do end up hiring an individual tradesperson, make sure to request proof that verifies his or her credentials.” You can also take the hassle-free route, and hire an established and respected company like Cornerstone Pros. “Our company does the screening and training for you, ensuring that every technician is a licensed and certified air conditioning, plumbing or electrical pro before adding them to our team,” said Dana. “When you turn to us, you can take comfort in knowing you’ve hired only qualified people for the job.” If you have had a bad experience with an unqualified contractor, Spears encourages you to protect

Dana Spears, president and owner of Cornerstone Pros.

other homeowners from suffering the same consequences by reporting unqualified contractors and unlicensed tradesmen to the Florida’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation at myfloridalicense.com. In the long run, the best way to prevent home emergencies is to plan ahead with regular maintenance on your home’s mechanical systems. “Your A/C should receive regular maintenance every six to 12 months to prevent an emergency situation,” said Spears. “Folks don’t realize that their A/C is a home appliance, just like their refrigerator. All appliances have a life span, and don’t last forever.” Maintaining your A/C is much like taking your vehicle in for regular oil changes and service updates, explains Spears. “If you don't service your vehicle, you are looking for trouble. And, if you are not doing regular maintenance on your A/C system, when

you have problems, it will likely be during the hottest times of the year, or during the holidays when you have a houseful of people,” said Spears. Cornerstone Pros offers several maintenance programs that are affordable and will make sure that recommended service is done on all of your home’s mechanical systems. Cornerstone Pros was founded in 2006 as an air conditioning service company. It moved to its 4-acre site on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard in 2011, and the following year added plumbing services. In 2014, it expanded again with electrical services. In 2018, Cornerstone Pros built a 6,000-square-foot warehouse next to its headquarters on U.S. 41, to store air conditioning units of all sizes and stock high-demand service items for its air conditioning, electrical and plumbing operations. It also stocks tankless hot water systems, and portable and permanent generators,

including whole-house systems by Generac. “Every morning our vans are fully stocked with everything our technicians need, which means on most calls, we are able to solve a customer’s problem on the first visit,” said Spears. “Our warehouse has allowed us to become a more efficient service operation and provide even better customer service.” Spears credits her company’s growth to its commitment to outstanding customer service, and also because its employees exemplify her company’s values. “We hire people who are genuine, honest, trustworthy, clean-cut, and live their life with good ethics and morals,” said Spears. “Most employees are local people who live in our service area, and are very committed to their work and community.” The company has developed its own training program for employees to become certified in its trade areas. Over 20 employees have successfully completed these programs, receiving numerous industry certifications, and now work as highly skilled tradesmen. “We’re always looking for eager, hardworking men and women with a good attitude and mechanical aptitude,” Spears says. “We’re successful because we’ve built our business on reputation and trust, which begins by hiring great people.” Cornerstone phones are answered 24/7, and technicians are available around the clock, including weekends and holidays. Call (813) 990-0561 anytime, day or night. For more information, visit their website at CornerstonePros.com.

Proven, Step-By-Step Carpet Cleaning That Is Reliable and Safe

M

ost people don’t give much thought to how their carpet will be cleaned when they hire a carpet cleaning company to come into their home. And, while most companies utilize some version of hot water extraction, few follow the detailed, step-by-step process used by every Stanley Steemer location. “Whether we service you from our Lutz location, or you have used Stanley Steemer in another part of the country, your carpets will be cleaned using the same proven process developed by Stanley Steemer over its 70-year history,” said White, co-owner of the Stanley Steemer Carpet franchise on State Road 54 in Lutz. “It’s a bit like McDonald’s — where you expect a Big Mac to taste the same no matter where you buy it. With Steemer, we provide the same consistent, professional services that you can trust your carpets to.” White and his father, Chet, have owned the Stanley Steemer franchise in Pasco County for five years. Last year, they opened their new Lutz headquarters, which employs 13 technicians and three customer service reps. Stanley Steemer is the only carpet cleaning company that manufactures its own equipment, which uses hot water and steam to extract dirt and grime from flooring. “We do a very thorough job when it comes to carpet cleaning,” said White. “We always pre-treat carpets with a spray that loosens and suspends soil in the carpet, and then pre-scrub the carpet with a mechanical, circular machine to further loosen the dirt and debris. Both are done before using our proprietary hot water extractor to suck grime out of the carpet.” Most carpet today is synthetic, which means you don’t want the water to be too hot, because it can melt the fiber, White explains. “Our water is maintained at a steady 185 degrees — hot enough to be effective, but not too hot to damage the

The Steemer Way 1. Inspect the rooms being cleaned. 2. Move as much furniture as we can. 3. Spot treat problem areas. 4. individual carpet strands, or loosen the latex glue that holds the carpet strands together,” said White. White goes on to explain that a carpet’s worst enemy is sand, because sand scratches the synthetic fiber, which over time creates wear patterns. “We can clean the dirt and grime out of your carpet, but we cannot repair the damage to the fibers that result from sand scratching your carpet fiber,” said White. “The best advice I can give is to vacuum your carpet often. It doesn’t matter what brand you use — a $40 vacuum used a few times a week is always better than a $400 vacuum used once a month.” Stanley Steemer never uses subcontractors. All of its technicians are

employees who meet the company’s high standards – including background checks, drug tests and extensive training before going out in the field. Employees wear professional uniforms and take great pride in their appearance. “We are very cognizant that we are welcomed into someone’s home, and we make sure our employees meet the high standards we set for them,” said White. Stanley Steemer technicians always work in teams of two. “Most homeowners feel safer with two techs in their home, plus two techs move furniture better and get the job done twice as fast,” said White. “We also stand behind our work with a 10-Day

Redo Policy, which fortunately we are seldom asked about, because we strive to get the job done right the first time.” Stanley also prices its job differently than other carpet cleaning companies, many which have hidden fees. “We consider a room as up to 300 square feet, while most competitors define a room as 200 square feet,” said White. “So even if their advertised price is less than ours, they usually end up costing more because a lot of rooms are more than 200 square feet.” In addition, White explains that Stanley Steemer never charges to move furniture, and pre-treatments for heavily soiled carpets are included in price — items that are often an additional cost at other companies. Stanley Steemer's carpet cleaning is certified asthma and allergy-friendly, because it removes an average of 94 percent of common household allergens. “This means it is safe for you, your pets and the environment. In other words, a carpet cleaning from Stanley Steemer will leave your home cleaner and healthier,” said White. October and November are the busiest time of the year for carpet cleaning, because families are getting their homes ready for the holidays. To make sure you get the day and time that’s best for you, call now to schedule ahead, or request a same-day service. Call the Lutz Stanley Steemer at (813) 996-2436, or schedule online at StanleySteemer.com.

Currently in its third phase, when Asturia’s development is complete, it will likely have less than 550 single-family homes. “What makes Asturia stand out from other new home developments is our smaller size,” said Lane Gardner, senior managing director for Hines, the developer behind Asturia. “Other communities in the area are looking at 3,000 to over 5,000 homes, and many years of construction. Our families prefer the intimate neighborhood experience that comes with Asturia’s modest community size.” Asturia’s central location is just five minutes from the Suncoast Parkway, and also provides close proximity to U.S. 41, U.S. 19 and I75. Its master plan incorporates retail, office, multifamily and a variety of single-family residential offerings. More information can be obtained by visiting Asturia’s model homes, registering at the community’s website, AsturiaFlorida.com, or by calling (813) 227-4148.

Pulte and Arthur Rutenberg New Builders In Bexley

B

uilding a new home is exciting — from selecting a lot, to choosing a floor plan, and waiting expectantly as your builder constructs your house, where you will create many years of memories. Bexley by Newland, the top-selling master-planned community in Tampa Bay according to the RCLCO mid-year 2019 report, is adding more home options. It is introducing two new builders, Pulte Homes and Arthur Rutenberg/Custom Craft Homes, which will offer new homebuyers ample ways to turn their house into a dream home. Homebuilder Arthur Rutenberg recently opened its Avalon model home at Bexley. Prospective homebuyers can choose from 19 different floor plans that were created just for the community. All feature expansive kitchens with a walk-in pantry and large, open first-floor great rooms that flow easily into an outdoor lanai, for the very best in indoor/outdoor living. “Being in Bexley was just the natural thing to do,” said Ernie Lashlee, building company president for Arthur Rutenberg Homes/Custom Craft Homes. “We started building custom homes in Newland’s FishHawk Ranch community more than a decade ago. Bexley has superior amenities for its residents. But, what has impressed us are the residents themselves. They love this community. Neighbors know their neighbors and there’s a real sense of connection. We’re pleased to be a part of that.” As one of the nation’s largest homebuilders, Pulte Homes builds consumer-inspired homes that provide homebuyers the best quality of life. At Bexley, Pulte will offer three flexible home designs that allow for personalization with upgraded designer options and superior construction quality. Pulte’s homes also feature an industry-leading, 10-year protection plan warranty. Conveniently located close to Bexley Elementary School, prospective Pulte

Pulte Homes is now building single-family homes in Bexley, including its popular Driftwood floor plan with its oversized kitchen island.

homebuyers can select from three- to five-bedroom homes with up to three bathrooms, and two-car garages. Pulte is no stranger to Bexley. The company opened its Del Webb at Bexley 55+ active adult neighborhood last year. “We have been so excited with the success of Del Webb Bexley, and are thrilled to expand our presence in the community and introduce our Life Tested Pulte designs,” said Sean Strickler, Pulte’s division president for West Florida. “We’ve had several of our active adult homeowners already inquire about their family members building with Pulte in Bexley, and look forward to introducing that opportunity later this year.” “Bexley is truly a unique community,” added Pam Parisi, vice president, marketing for Newland. “That’s one of the reasons we’re able to attract such outstanding homebuilder partners. Arthur Rutenberg and Pulte Homes will be great additions to our Bexley family.” Arthur Rutenberg and Pulte Homes

join an established lineup of builders, including Cardel Homes, David Weekley Homes, Homes by WestBay, and Lennar. Home designs include single-family and luxury homes priced from the mid-$200s to over $800,000. Bexley’s 1,825-acre community offers a wide range of activities and amenities just minutes from your doorstep, in-

cluding resort-style pools, a state-ofthe-art fitness center, miles of dual-surface trails and a BMX pump track, plus the Twisted Sprocket Café and Suncoast Trailside Bicycles, which are both open to the public. MOFFITT, from page 1A The first increase would take effect in 2020, and the second one would take effect in 2023. Both would last until 2053, Tremonti said. The primary driver for the request is Moffitt’s need for additional space for both clinical care and research. Moffitt is currently operating at or near capacity for both clinical and research purposes. “We have patients that receive a cancer diagnosis that aren’t able to get into Moffitt, as timely as they need to be,”Tremonti said. Revenues generated from the first increase would be used for a new clinical and research facility in Hillsborough County, with the goal to start that in July 2020, Tremonti said. That project has been designed in two phases. Moffitt will be spending about $332 million on phase one; and the increase in the cigarette tax would allow it to build out phase two, she said. Revenues generated from the additional increase in Moffitt’s share of the tobacco tax funds would go for a clinical and research facility in Pasco County, Tremonti said. That project is intended to meet future demand for cancer therapies and to create a research park. The goal would be to start that in July 2023, the Moffitt executive said. Regardless of what happens with its request, Moffitt plans to pursue the new clinical and research facility in Hillsborough County,Tremonti said. If Moffitt doesn’t receive its request to boost its share of the tobacco tax revenues up to 7%, it would not be able to build out

HEALTH, from page 1A reported at the elementary level; 134 at the middle school level; and, 186 at the high school level. District data regarding Baker Act cases reported 171 at the elementary level; 211 at the middle school level; and, 207 at the high school level. Baker Act cases involve individuals who are deemed to be a threat to themselves or others who are referred for mental evaluation. “We obviously have many students that need significant support from us, relating to mental health,” said Melissa Musselwhite, the district’s director of student support programs, during a school board session on mental health held this summer. Pasco Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning pointed to the suicide assessments. “Twelve hundred and sixty — 463 just in elementary school alone,” Browning noted. He also observed there were more suicide assessments at elementary level, than in high school. “The same with threats,” noted School Board Chairwoman Alison Crumbley. “It’s

phase two of its Hillsborough plan. And, if the increased funding from 7% up to 10% did not happen, Moffitt would have to delay its expansion into Pasco County,Tremonti said. Because of its research and the novel treatments it has developed, Moffitt serves patients from all of Florida’s 67 counties, from all 50 states and from other countries, too,Tremonti said. Moffitt is ranked one of the Top 10 cancer hospitals in America and best in the Southeast. Pasco County is attractive because of the area’s tremendous growth,Tremonti said. The site’s proximity to the Suncoast Parkway and Tampa International Airport are pluses, too, she said. Moffitt’s proposal is drawing a positive response from elected leaders and local officials.

State Sen. Ed Hooper, a Republican representing District 16, which includes a portion of Pasco County, said Moffitt’s request is “not an inappropriate ask.” He’s not sure whether the Legislature will support Moffitt’s full request, but he said he would. “I’m just a fan of Moffitt Cancer Center, and I want them to be able to have the tools necessary to be successful to find a cure for a variety of cancers,” Hooper said. “Cigarette revenue is the most appropriate of all funding sources, as a known cancer causer. How better to use that money to find a solution to that disease?” Rep.Amber Mariano, a Republican representing District 36, also supports Moffitt’s request. “I think it makes total sense,” Mariano said, especially using cigarette tax “to treat the disease those products create.”

She said Moffitt’s new campus in Pasco would be transformative. “It’s going to open up that whole area,” Mariano said. “They’ll be able to bring in more companies, health care, startups. “With the growth that we’ve already got going on, it’s just the perfect fit,” she said.“I couldn’t be more thrilled that they’re coming.” Bill Cronin, president and CEO of Pasco Economic Development Council Inc., said the proximity to Tampa International Airport makes it a “wonderful ‘fly-to’ site for businesses all over America, as well as international clients and partners to visit their campus facility.” Besides attracting additional companies to locate near them, Moffitt also can be a magnet for talent, said Cronin, via email. State Rep. Randy Maggard, a Republican representing District 38, characterized Moffitt as “a great research institution” and said it “wants to bring jobs to Pasco.” But, he said he needs more information before taking a position on the request. “I’ve just got to really dive into it and just take a look at it, and make sure that this is good for the citizens of Pasco. That’s the bottom line, at the end of the day,” Maggard said. Pasco County Administrator Dan Biles said a new Moffitt campus in Central Pasco could have a profound impact. “You hear the term ‘game changer’ a lot and it seems that, over the last decade, it seems to be overused,” he said. However, he added: “I don’t have another word to replace that.” This is the kind of project, Biles said, that 50 years from now when people living elsewhere hear the name Pasco County, they’re going to think: “That’s where the Moffitt Research Center is.”

ride for those in wheelchairs. It also features canopy-shaded benches, and will be near a butterfly garden. Donors that helped make the project possible are the Wesley Chapel Rotary Club, AdventHealth Wesley Chapel and the Lennar Foundation. Representatives from each organization were present at the groundbreaking ceremony. Their contributions, along with the county’s park impact fees, amounted to $340,000

toward the project. “[At] AdventHealth Wesley Chapel hospital, we take care of sick people every day,” said Erik Wangsness, the hospital’s CEO.“But, another part of our mission is to nurture the health of the community.” Chris Casella, president of the local Rotary club, added that he and his members instantly knew the project would be worth taking on. Pasco County Commissioners Kathryn Starkey, Jack Mariano, Ron Oakley and Mike

Moore stepped onto the site’s barren ground with organization representatives. With hard hats and shovels in hand, they posed for the customary groundbreaking snapshot. Even Olivia got the opportunity to stand among the group. “The good thing – I think – about this playground, is she’s actually going to meet children like her,” Olivia’s mother said. The project is expected to be completed in November.

(threats) higher at elementary.” Jeannine Welch, senior supervisor for student support services, told board members that it’s difficult to pinpoint what the statistics mean. For instance, a suicide assessment could refer to a student who was assessed, but not in any danger. Musselwhite also said more information is needed:“Do we have the same standard for kids we are referring, let’s say for suicide assessment? “If the kid has scissors and says,‘I’m going to stab you,’ or ‘I’m going to stab myself,’ do we have a common practice across the district how we respond to that? “Those are questions. I don’t know.We really need to analyze the data more deeply,” Musselwhite said. Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools David Scanga said the statistics are telling. “It does reflect the stress level of elementary that probably 10 years ago we didn’t see,” he said.“So, the stress on the families, the stress on the communities, the stress within the building. I hear what Melissa is saying, but we also know and agree that there are things in elementary that we’re dealing with that are more frequent — not that they were never

there — but they are more frequent than they were in the past.” To help address the needs, the district has been collaborating with Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, which has allowed the district to expand its services. Central Florida has worked out a memorandum of understanding with all of the providers, so the district doesn’t have to obtain a separate contract for a specialized service,Welch said. Students receiving services are run through a voucher system. That helps stretch the district’s spending capacity because if a child is eligible for Medicaid, or would be potentially eligible, those dollars are used first,Welch said. The district has added key personnel and has expanded training efforts. It has added mental health coaches to coach school-based student services staff regarding mental health initiatives. The mental health liaison has been able to help analyze data, and also has provided “literally, someone to call instantly in order to be able to problem-solve with some of the situations we have within schools,” Musselwhite said. The district is working to improve its sup-

ports for students. When a student has been Baker-acted, for instance, the district wants to be sure it supports that student when he or sure returns to school. “We want to make sure that it’s truly done as a safety net for them,”Welch said. “We’ve had kids that have been gone for a week and come back, and said they’ve been on a Disney cruise. They weren’t on the Disney cruise,”Welch said. The district has ramped up training. “We are required to train staff and make sure they have first-aiders at schools. When this first came out, we had zero trainers,” Welch said.“This summer we’ve trained 688 staff members.” The district continues to build on its capacity, she said. “We spent this year building up trainers,” she said. “It shouldn’t just be the administrator. It should be others that, these are embedded practices that live on, regardless of the leadership,” she said. “The state has rolled out a new threat assessment protocol that we’ll be training all student services and administrative staff, in the next month (by Oct. 1),” Musselwhite said.

Sports complex expected to attract national events By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

ith concrete footers poured and steel beams heading vertical, the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex is a step closer to its much-anticipated opening. The $44 million sports complex is targeted for a mid-July 2020 soft opening — more than two years after a celebrated groundbreaking ceremony that marked the beginning of construction at 3211 Lajuana Blvd., in Wesley Chapel. Once completed, the 98,000-square-foot indoor space will feature a multipurpose sports layout that accommodates up to eight basketball courts or 16 volleyball courts, plus a separate competitive cheer and dance studio, fitness and athletic training center, and other amenities. Besides primarily basketball, volleyball and cheer offerings, the Pasco Countyowned facility also will be able to accommodate martial arts, wrestling, gymnastics, curling, badminton, soccer, lacrosse and pickleball. Secondary uses of the complex will include conventions, banquets, exhibits, concerts and so on. Originally, the facility was expected to open later this year. But, the project experienced some delays. “That goes with a major development project like this,” said Richard Blalock, president and CEO of RADD Sports, the private sports management company tasked with operating and managing the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex. Those delays included inclement weather, permitting issues and redesigns of the facility to make it hurricane-resistant, Blalock said. “When you’ve got as many moving parts that’s involved in this project, it’s just a matter of getting all the contracts lined up, and the contractor online and bids opened,” he said. The facility is being promoted as a regional and national attraction. The indoor gym on weekdays will operate as a community-based sports center where local youth, adults and seniors will be able to practice and play. Weekends, meanwhile, will be set aside to play host to national travel tournaments, competitions and other events to generate hotel stays and tax revenues for the county. The facility’s first weekend tournaments aren’t expected to be booked until around October 2020, Blalock said. The target is scheduling roughly 25 to 30 weekend events during the first full year and then grow it from there, Blalock said. He mentioned RADD Sports already has received numerous inquiries from youth and amateur sports organizations asking about the facility’s availability. “We’ve got ‘em lined up now, wanting to sign,” Blalock said. The complex also will host a series of weeklong sports camps each July or August, which Blalock said otherwise is a slow period in the travel sports marketplace.

Concrete footers and steel beams represent construction progress on the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex. The 98,000-square-foot facility is anticipated to be a regional and national draw for youth and amateur sports.

Those camps would allow for local school sports teams to get advanced instruction and match up against teams from all over the country, Blalock said. “They’re not going to have to travel very much and we’re bringing all the competition in, so it’ll be a good marriage,” he said. Not unlike nearby AdventHealth Center Ice in Wesley Chapel, the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex figures each year to draw hundreds, if not thousands, of youth and amateur travel sports teams and their families. Officials are excited about the prospects for Pasco County tourism. Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore, who chairs the county’s tourist development council, suggests the facility will be “a huge boon for the local economy.” Said Moore,“People travel from all over the nation to go these tournaments and these facilities. They all have to stay in hotels, they’re all eating in restaurants, they’re all buying the gas.” Moore said projections show the facility will generate annual revenues of roughly $4 million to $4.5 million each of first five years or so in operation, not including additional hotel and retail tax revenues generated. The commissioner emphasized that it’s key for those traveling visitors to stay overnight locally instead of heading to Hillsborough County. It’s something he’s assured will happen, pointing out the county already has 38 hotels “with more coming.” Moore explained: “Previously, when there’s a lot of tournaments that came into the county, a lot of the families were staying in Hillsborough County, so a lot of the local businesses didn’t see that revenue. Well now, we can handle those families, we can handle these tournaments.” To take it another step further, Moore said the county’s tourism department is developing a marketing campaign to encourage the myriad sports travel teams and visitors to explore the county’s other offerings, outside the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex. The county’s tourism arm official-

ly rebranded itself as “Florida’s Sports Coast” earlier this year. Said Moore,“We want them to take the day and maybe go rent a boat and go kayaking or go fishing with one of our guides, or hit some of the islands. That’s another benefit for the families coming — great activities outside of the sports or watching their kids play.”

OUTDOOR OFFERINGS ON TAP, TOO

The Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex will be more than just an indoor space. The complex eventually will include seven outdoor sports fields, an amphitheater with an event lawn, walking trails, pavilions and a playground. There also will be an adjacent 128-room Marriott Residence Inn built with private funds by Mainsail Development Group. Many of those features are expected to be finished in Phase II of the project, about a year or so later, officials say. The entire complex is being built on 80 acres of land donated years ago by the Porter family, developers of Wiregrass Ranch. Several proposals for some type of sports facility on the land fell apart over the years, including one for a baseball complex in 2015. But, with the mix of indoor and outdoor components, the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex provides “the biggest bang for our

taxpayers’ buck,” Moore said. “It’ll be a really big thing for the area,” the commissioner said.“When you think about the area, there’s really nothing like this around here at all. And, if you see how well similar facilities do, this is going to be strong.” He added:“It’s nice to obviously see the progress that’s being made. It won’t be long. It’ll be done before we know it. It’ll sneak right up on us.” Meanwhile, the complex adds to a growing list of premier sports offerings in the East Pasco area — with construction underway on a multi-million tennis center in Zephyrhills and preliminary plans for a multi-million outdoor aquatics center in Land O’ Lakes. Even Cypress Creek Middle High, in Wesley Chapel, with its a state-of-theart rubberized running track and field space has been highly regarded for hosting events. Blalock underscored what all that could mean for the county’s quest to position itself as a sports tourism destination:“For the most part, we’ll be able to run any type of Olympic event in a short radius, and it’s crazy. There’s nowhere I’m aware of in the southeast, or anywhere in the country really, that can really do that.” He also posited this:“If everyone in the community pulls together and we work together, and all the facilities work together, it could really, truly become an amateur sports destination that equals nowhere else.” with the Texans in September. McGough graduated from Gaither in 2014. There, McGough registered nearly 5,000 passing yards and 50 passing touchdowns in three varsity seasons — after transferring to Gaither from Wesley Chapel High School following his freshman year. Collecting litter to help keep Pasco clean By Christine Holtzman choltzman@lakerlutznews.com

bout 340 volunteers fanned out across Land O’ Lakes to pick up litter and trash along the area’s roads, public lands and waterways. They were among the thousands who took part in Pasco County, as part of the annual International Coastal Cleanup event on Sept. 21. Volunteers in Dade City, Lacoochee, New Port Richey, Port Richey, Hudson and Holiday also joined in the efforts that were organized by Pasco County and the not-forprofit environmental organization, Keep Pasco Beautiful. Those pitching in on the Land O’ Lakes effort met around 8 a.m., at the community center at Heritage Park, 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., to pick up gloves, trash bags, safety vests and bottles of water. Event sponsors paid for the supplies, and volunteers who had registered received a keepsake bag and an event T-shirt. Some of the volunteers have been helping out for decades, including 84-year-old Gloria Dale, of the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club, who worked at the registration table. She’s been pitching in for 26 years. Lottie Kelley, another longtime volunteer, has helped for 24 years. She works for Covanta, one of the event sponsors, and was the Land O’ Lakes site captain. Helping to keep Pasco clean and green is what makes the event important, Kelley said. “Litter is very unsightly, and it’s not good for the county,” Kelley said. Besides being unattractive, roadway trash can be dangerous for wildlife, she said. “We need to keep the litter off the roadways, so the animals don’t eat it. They can end up being in a terrible situation,” Kelley said. She said this year’s effort focused on roadways in Land O’ Lakes, including Ehren Cutoff, Collier Parkway, Parkway Boulevard, Hale Road, Bell Lake Road and Carson Drive. Boy Scout Troops 33 and 34, and Cub Scouts from Pack 33 from Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Land O’ Lakes, collected trash along large stretches of Collier Parkway and Parkway Boulevard. The troops have been participating in this event for approximately 15 years and, over the years, have picked up all sorts of items, including a glass table, a microwave, beer bottles and even a device that looked like a pipe bomb. The idea is to remove every piece of trash discarded on the roadways to prevent it from ending up in waterways, and eventually into oceans. As each piece trash is picked up, it is recorded on sheets, or on a downloadable app provided by the nonprofit organization Ocean Conservancy. The ocean-advocacy group is on a mission to tackle the greatest global challenges facing the ocean. By recording the types of trash and the amounts, the group can establish a snapshot and a state-by-state index of the problem of marine debris. Last year, 1,823 volunteers picked up 11.94 tons of trash throughout Pasco County, according to the Keep Pasco Beautiful website.

CHRISTINE HOLTZMAN

In their first year volunteering for the Coastal Cleanup event, the Dana family, from Wesley Chapel, work together to pick up trash that was discarded along Collier Parkway, north of Hale Road. From left: 7-year-old Peyton, Cliff, 10-year-old Ethan, and Lydia.

Eleven-year old Olivia O’Malley, of Land O’ Lakes, holds a trash bag open, as her father, Michael, throws away a decaying trash bag that was found on the side of Parkway Boulevard. O’Malley, a member of Boy Scout Troop 34, and her dad also found a piece of a car bumper earlier in the morning.

Five-year-old Aliya Goodwin, of Lutz, left, and 9-year-old Caleb MacKenzie, also of Lutz, take a break from picking up trash, and sit on the bumper of an SUV. The kids were volunteering their time by collecting trash along Parkway Boulevard in Land O’ Lakes with Cub Scout Pack 33.

Twelve-year-old Wesley Swank, of Land O’ Lakes, emerges from the bushes with a large Styrofoam cup, that was discarded along Parkway Blvd, near Paw Place. Swank is a member of Boy Scout Troop 33, which is based out of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Land O’ Lakes.

Seven-year-old Brendan Pratt, of Land O’ Lakes, left, and his father, Michael, stand on the corner of Parkway Boulevard and Collier Parkway. To stay hydrated, Brendan is drinking water from a hose, that is connected to the backpack full of water that he is wearing.

Cub Scout Pack 33, based out of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Land O’ Lakes, picks up trash along Parkway Boulevard, near the corner of Collier Parkway.

Thriving buck

Harrigan said residents spotted ‘Gimpy’ years ago noticing his damaged right front leg and wondered if he got hit by a car, and if he would survive. This young buck seems to be doing just fine!
