Browning: Schools must improve By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When the state released its school grades last month, the news wasn’t good for numerous Pasco County schools, or for the district itself. “The Friday that grades were released, it was not a good day for me. Nor the district,” Superintendent Kurt Browning said at a school board workshop on the issue on Aug. 2. The state’s report showed a number of Pasco schools slipping a grade, and the district, itself, slipping from a B to a C. On one hand, Browning said, school grades don’t paint a complete picture of a school. “There’s a lot more that goes into a

school than just a single school grade,” he said. On the other hand, he noted: “People judge the quality of a school based on the school grade, and I get that.” Kurt Browning There were changes in the way the grades were calculated this year, Browning said. But he added:“You had 66 other districts that were operating under the same rules.” The district is assessing where it is and why it saw changes, particularly in the increase of C and D schools, Browning said. “We are really trying to assess why we

are where we are,” Browning said. “We were at 34 (34th in the state) when I took office. We went to 33. Now, we’re at 39,” he said. “Anyway you cut it, slice it or dice it, we’re 39th – and that is not something that appeals to me at all. “I do think there are things that we can do, that will move the needle,” Browning said. But he noted, there are no easy fixes. “I learned a long time ago that the art of educating kids is not like building a widget. You don’t start out with a table full of parts, and at the end of the assembly line they all look the same and function the same,” he said. At the same time, “we have got to think See BROWNING, page 11A

Teachers headed back to Pasco County Schools this week to prepare for the first day of school on Aug. 15. Opening day is a big deal on every campus every year, but it will be especially meaningful at Wiregrass Elementary School, at 29732 Wiregrass School Road in Wesley Chapel because that school is having its “first” first day. The mood across campus during a teacher move-in day last week offered a glimpse into the significance. People were focused on getting things ready — but there was an obvious excitement, too. Like many schools,Wiregrass been counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until school starts. This label is above the ticking clock on

its website: “Countdown until Wiregrass Elementary changes the world forever.” The opening of Wiregrass Elementary, of course, caused a shifting of school boundaries. That means some Wesley Chapel children will be experiencing their first day of school this year at at Denham Oaks Elementary, at 1422 Oak Grove Blvd., in Lutz. The 2016-2017 school year also marks the beginning of a new S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Magnet program at Centennial Middle School at 38505 Centennial Road in Dade City. The school will be using the Learning Active Technology Infused Classroom model, said Principal Rick Saylor. That instructional approach centers around rigor, student engagement and student responsibility.

Centennial Middle also has been equipped with new technology, offering new opportunities for students. For instance, it now has flight simulators that it will be using in its technology education class. And now, because it’s a magnet school, it will be drawing students from outside its traditional boundaries, as well. Pasco Elementary School, at 37350 Florida Ave., in Dade City, will be adding 50 minutes of daily instructional time for students in grades four and five, to comply with a state requirement. In a July 18 letter posted in English and Spanish on the school’s website, Principal Nena Green tells parents:“We see this as a great opportunity for us to provide students with the additional support that they need to be successful.” As a result of the additional instructional time, the school day for Pasco Elementary students in grades four and five will be from 8:40 a.m. to 3:40 p.m., while student in prekindergarten through third grade will remain on the school’s 8:40 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., schedule. Hotels go up as tourism grows in Pasco By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County’s hotel market is thriving. Five hotels are either under construction, closing in on a groundbreaking or will open within months. A new Hilton Garden Inn is the most recent to complete permitting, with a construction start now in the offing. The 125-room, six-story hotel is rising off of State Road 56, at Maple Silver Parkway. Another 110-room Hilton Garden Inn at Northpointe Village, on State Road 54 at the Suncoast Parkway, is expected to open in three to four months. Off State Road 56, an 80-room Holiday Inn Express is well under way, next to the construction site for the Florida Hospital Center Ice sports complex. The ice complex is expected to open by Labor Day, and play a significant role in boosting Pasco’s sports tourism industry. Developers of Cypress Creek Town Center, on the north side of State Road 56, are planning a 130-room Hyatt Place Wesley Chapel hotel. And,Wiregrass Ranch is set to build a 92room Fairfield Inn & Suites, also off State Road 56. The hotel expansion comes as Pasco

County is looking at another record-breaking year for tourism, with the county’s cash register jingling with bed tax dollars from hotel stays. Pasco County’s Tourism Manager Ed Caum anticipates hitting $1 million in revenues from the bed tax, exclusively paid by hotel guests who live outside of Pasco. To date, he said revenues are about $856,000, a 4.6 percent increase over projections. In the last 18 months, hotel occupancy has been about 72 percent to 75 percent.

And, the average daily hotel rate is $8 higher than last year. “Now there is more demand, so there’ll be more supply,” Caum said. Pasco currently has about 3,600 hotel rooms. More than 600 rooms will be added from the new hotels. In 2013, an Urban Land Institute study predicted that Pasco would add about 75 rooms a year through 2020. By that yard stick, Caum said,“We’re actuSee HOTELS, page 11A

Wiregrass Elementary revving up for first day By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Crews are kicking it into high gear at Wiregrass Elementary School to ensure the school is ready to open for students on Aug. 15. The new school, at 29732 Wiregrass School Road in Wesley Chapel, will have its “first” first day of school, and Principal Steve Williams said he and his staff can’t wait. “This is going to be a fantastic school. It’s going to be an outside-the-box kind of school. It’s going to be a school that doesn’t necessarily do things the way everybody else does, because we are pushing for incredible outcomes. Intentional outcomes,”Williams said. The school was built to relieve crowding at other nearby schools. As of Aug. 4, its enrollment was 505 students, but that number has been increasing every day, the principal said. “We certainly anticipate that this is going to be a growing school. There’s a lot of subdivisions being built,” he said. Williams said the school has features he thinks will help to make it special. There’s an area called Wiregrass Court, an inclusive play area for children and a park. There are other differences, too. “We’re trying to push what the definition of learning spaces look like. So, we don’t have a media center. We have what we call The Wiregrass Innovation Factory. That’s where you have the large space with technology and books, and opportunities to collaborate and create,” the principal said. Each grade level team also has its own “Local innovation Factory,” tailored to each age group. “It looks different. It feels different. It’s got great technology in it. In addition, it’s got some furniture. It’s got a maker space. It’s got some instructional materials. Ultimately, you’ll have two 65-inch TVs, plus an interactive whiteboard, all with wireless technology,” Williams said. The school’s staff was set to report to work on Aug. 8, but some teachers dropped in earlier to unpack boxes and arrange their classrooms. “We’ve opened these past two days — yesterday and today — for staff that wanted to move in,”Williams said on Aug. 4.“For most

of them, this is their very first time being on this campus. They’re here to drink it all in and to move stuff,” he said. “They’ve been very, very excited and I understand it, because I’ve been excited, too,” the principal added. Robin Kestenbaum, who teaches first grade, loves the idea of helping to launch the new school. “I honestly felt like a little first-grader, getting ready for the first day of the school,” she said. Kestenbaum, a teacher for 17 years, said she has taught in Massachusetts and Tennessee, and on the east coast of Florida. Most recently, she taught at Pine View Elementary. The beginning of every school year is exciting, she said, but that’s especially true this year. “I have to be honest with you, this is one of the most exciting for me, personally,” Kestenbaum said. Third-grade teacher Maria Pita brought a crew along to help her move in. Her husband was there, and so was her daughter and her daughter’s friend. And, another daughter was expected to arrive to join in, too.

The teacher previously taught at Pasco Elementary. “It’s going to be a whole new adventure,” Pita said, who taught at Pasco Elementary last year. Music teachers Heather Croucher and Christine Reed are also delighted to help open Wiregrass Elementary. Croucher, who taught at Denham Oaks Elementary, will be at Wiregrass Elementary five days a week. Reed will be Wiregrass Elementary for two days a week and Pine View Elementary for three days a week. “We’re excited about all of the new stuff that we have,” Croucher said. The music department also has two rooms, she said.“This is our music suite.” “That’s S-W-E-E-T,” Reed added. “We’re looking forward to doing lots of musicals here,” Croucher said, including “maybe a xylophone group, and maybe even utilizing that outdoor area for some recitals.” The school has four things it is focusing on, Williams said. Those are: Safety pursued. Learning focused. People valued. And, outcome driven. “All of our conversations and all of our systems are all based around those four things,” he said.

In learning focused, for instance,“this first year we’re doing a lot of conversations about students owning their own learning and what does that look like?” the principal said. “How do we help our student to own their own learning? Of course, that looks different at kindergarten than it does at fifth grade,” the principal said. Helping kids “own” their own learning can mean that different kids will be doing different things in the room at the same time — aiming for the same learning goal, but coming at it from different paths, he explained. The goal is to prepare students leaving the elementary school to be successful in middle school, said Williams, who previously was the director of teaching and learning for Pasco County Schools. Before that, he was the principal at Sunlake High School and worked in other roles. When the opportunity to lead Wiregrass Elementary came along,Williams said he was pleased to accept the role. “One of my professional goals was always to open a school as principal,” he said.“This has been the chance to cast a vision, to hire the staff, to buy the materials, to do everything from the ground up.”

The White Pear is dressing up Wesley Chapel By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

A traffic light, six mannequins, a well-situated picture window – and a love of fashion – are what Nanette Del Valle mixed together to launch her dream job. Nearly six years ago, she left the paralegal world behind to open The White Pear, a women’s formalwear consignment boutique in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. On Aug. 2, she opened her second White Pear boutique in Wesley Chapel, at 1045 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., near County Line Road. The original boutique, which started in her home, eventually settled into a brick-andmortar shop, with five employees and 4,000 dresses. In its infancy, Del Valle would adorn mannequins in glamorous gowns and cocktail dresses. Motorists pausing at a red light by her house would get an eyeful through her picture window. “That was my billboard,” she said “I would change the windows weekly.” A Facebook page, with postings three times a day, also tapped into the social media market.“That’s how it blossomed,” Del Valle said. She started with about 80 dresses. Most came from the closets of friends and family. Many of the dresses at the Wesley Chapel shop came from her Pottsville flagship store. But, already Del Valle said she is receiving consignment gowns locally. Del Valle is sharing retail space with Jennifer Smith, owner of Fancy Frock. Smith opened her bridal shop nearly six years ago, selling wedding gowns as well as women’s formalwear for all occasions. But, she is focusing now on her first love – brides and wedding gowns. “That’s my true passion,” said Smith, a former Pasco County teacher. Del Valle is filling out the shop with formal gowns and dresses for proms, homecomings, informal weddings and special occasions. All of the once-worn dresses are sold on consignment with a 50/50 split on sales.

Jewelry and other accessories can be found at The White Pear, a women’s formalwear consignment boutique in Wesley Chapel.

She also sells new jewelry and shoes. A seamstress is in-house to help with alterations. “It’s a one-stop shop,” Del Valle said. Del Valle and her husband moved to Wesley Chapel about a year ago, getting ready for retirement in sunny Florida. But,The White Pear remains her baby, and the future looks bright as Pasco booms with new development.

In Pennsylvania, two formal seasons, in winter and spring, are the biggest selling times. But Del Valle said,“It’s a different market down here. There are more galas and events where women need a beautiful dress.” There also is an abundance of high schools with young girls eager to find special gowns for proms. “There is a need for the service I have,”

Del Valle said.“Proms are probably my biggest events.” She carries high-end designers, such as Jovani, Sherri Hill and Rachel Allan. Del Valle said she enjoys giving personalized service for customers looking for just the right dress for special occasions.“My husband calls me a memory maker,” she said.

We’re all summoned to battle Zika’s threat

By Tom Jackson

tjackson@lakerlutznews.com

s promised — no, as feared — Zika has come ashore, invading Florida, most likely from Latin America, replicating the first wave of a map from a science fiction movie. Soon, because we are mobile and restless, it could be everywhere. What emerged out of a Ugandan rainforest, a virus that sickens some adults with aches and rashes but is linked to horrific deformities to babies in the womb, has come to America the modern way: not through the vampiric work of infected flying insects, but probably on the wings of Boeing jets, or aboard a luxury cruise ship. Somebody visited someplace where Zika is rampant, picked it up and came home, possibly — because the symptoms in adults often are too subtle to notice — without knowing he was sick. But now that it’s here, it’s most likely mosquitos — specifically the aggressive, daylight-active Aedes (from the Greek for “odious”) aegypti — that will enable its spread. The good news, to the extent that anything regarding Zika can be regarded as good, is that as of late last week, reports of the virus being spread by mosquitos remained contained to Miami. Otherwise, Zika cases across the state, including about a half-dozen in Pasco County and 10 in Hillsborough County, are evidently travel-related. That, of course, could change overnight. An infected person back from vacation goes out for the night, suffers a bite, and what started as an exotic respite in Belize or St. Martin triggers an outbreak back home. Which is why, more than ever, we need to know what’s going on at the Pasco County Mosquito Control District. To be sure, we remain on the front line of beating back the menace of the opportunistic Aedes aegypti, which uses our bad — or at least risky — habits to its reproductive advantage. Mosquitos rely on collections of still water for egg-laying and early stage development. While its cousins prefer natural collection points, such as water lettuce, water hyacinths, ditches and tidal puddles, Aedes aegypti seeks out human-caused pools, everything from discarded tires to bird baths to mop buckets to the kids’ beach toys. If it’s outside and it’ll hold water, it’s

even money the female Aedes aegypti considers it a nursery. Everybody who’s spent time in the South, especially Florida, already knows — or ought to know — this. Oddly, though, it’s usually not until reports of some alarming public health menace makes the news that most of us take a mental inventory of the possible collection sites under our jurisdiction. Well, that and you’re under the icy, cobalt gaze of entomologist Dennis Moore, Pasco’s mosquito control director, who has three words for us:“Drain and cover.” I might have gone with “Dump and cover,” because it sounds more like “duck and cover,” but the message is the same.We should deny Zika’s “vector” mosquito breeding space wherever we can, but because we can’t count on our neighbors, we should cover ourselves (with clothes and effective insect repellant) and our residences (with screens in good repair). Moore says this even as the part of the district’s program with which we are most

familiar — the distinctly orange spray trucks — prepare for another night of going to war with mosquitos out for a “blood meal.” What we might not know, but find reassuring, is the district also employs airborne tactics — a pair of low-flying Aztec airplanes and a couple of helicopters — to attack mosquitos in rural and coastal areas in their larval stage; airboats to kill off lake and pond vegetation that collects water; amphibious vehicles to go where airboats cannot go; and, where vehicular intervention or mass attacks are impractical,

handheld foggers for that personal touch. What we also might not know, but find fascinating, is that craftsmen, welders and mechanics working for the district fabricate much of what Pasco’s mosquito hunters use. This is not due to a lack of offthe-shelf stuff, Moore says, but because his people can take the elemental parts — a Briggs & Stratton engine and a sprayer, for instance — and create the blower linkage that makes a better, cheaper mosquito killer. “And, when it breaks,” Moore says, “we know how to fix it, because we built it.” For instance, those pesticide-holding tanks on the bottoms of the Aztecs? They’re fiberglass sprung from molds fashioned by the machine shop. You can buy them off the rack for about $30,000, Moore explains, but the district’s do-it-themselves tanks cost about one-sixth as much. Meanwhile, back in the lab, researchers are growing mosquitos, which become tiny wriggling and buzzing lab rats for the testing of various types and combinations of mosquito-specific pesticides and growth-inhibitors. And, they know where to spray because of a full-time trapping program. Why the fussiness? Because the Pasco Mosquito Control District is an agency unto itself, with a board (two of whom face reelection challengers in November) and a $6 million budget that corresponds with a line item on Pasco property owners’ tax bills. Being responsible for itself means being able to pivot more quickly when conditions change. Nobody has to go to the county commission for an emergency budget adjustment. On that front, nothing changes until it does, Moore says,“and then, it’ll change fast and a lot.” To meet the challenge, the agency would add staff and ramp up training, both of which could challenge the district’s bottom line. If that happens, the three-member board will have some choices to make. But they will be their choices, not the choices of a county commission with layers of concerns. For now, the capable folks at the district will do what they can to make our next barbecue, sidewalk cafe visit, after-work golf getaway or trip to the park as nuisance-free as science can make it. But, like the man said, they can’t do it alone, and Zika is out there. Drain and cover, y’all. Drain and cover. Tom Jackson, a resident of New Tampa, is interested in your ideas. Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. And, if your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you

Nobody seems to know for sure if Coolidge visited Dade City Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

A

bout a year ago, my first history column for The Laker/Lutz News posed the question: “Did President Calvin Coolidge have lunch in Dade City?” Since that column published, on Aug. 19, 2015, new information has surfaced that keeps the question open. At the July meeting of the Pasco County Historical Society, I reminded those gathered that Dade City didn’t appear to offer much back in 1929, when Coolidge was said to have stopped there for lunch. There’s no doubt President Coolidge was in Florida that year, because he gave a speech at the dedication ceremony for Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. It’s possible he could have stopped at the Edwinola in Dade City, if he took a detour and came to the area on the Seaboard Airline Railroad. The Edwinola opened as a hotel in 1912. There, Coolidge could have enjoyed the tea dances held with an orchestra at one end of the large porch. But, the Valencia Restaurant was not open for business. Neither was the Crest Restaurant. Lunch on Limoges would not serve its famous pecan chicken until 1981. And,A Matter of Taste restaurant did not open until 1997. So why does rumor have it that he lunched at the Gray Moss Inn? Supposedly, there was a connection between Coolidge and the owners of the Gray Moss Inn. However, I was never able to confirm that lead. After my first column was published, though, I heard from Susan Maesen, of Dade City.

Legend has it that President Calvin Coolidge ate lunch at the Gray Moss Inn in Dade City, but no documentation has yet been found to verify that.

COURTESY OF DOUG SANDERS

Somewhere in this beautiful home in the Historic Church Street District in Dade City, the pages of an old hotel registry may contain an original signature by Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States. And, it’s possible that Bob and Jo Larkin, who own the home, don’t even know it.

DESIGN

She wrote: “Mr. Sanders, I am sorry I didn’t have the opportunity to give you information concerning this article.” As the daughter of Jack Dudley, Susan has memories of her family running the Gray Moss Inn after the death of her grandmother. “There were ledgers that each guest had to sign in,” she wrote.“I cannot verify that Coolidge signed a ledger. I can verify my dad telling me that he visited.” In last year’s column, I indicated there were unconfirmed “tips” that the old guest registry wound up in the hands of Dr. R. D. Sistrunk, who lived a few blocks down the street across from the First Baptist Church. Now, I know from Susan, that Dr. Sistrunk was her grandfather on her mother’s side. But, did the Pasco County Historical Society know that Coolidge’s train may have stopped briefly in the early morning hours at Trilby?

Dade City Commissioner Scott Black, who grew up in Trilby, said he was told by the late Clifford Couey, that no one got off the train when it stopped in Trilby, before it departed from there traveling on the Orange Belt Railway en route to St. Petersburg. I was unable to independently confirm that Coolidge’s train did stop in Trilby. But a year later, it can be documented that Coolidge appeared at the Vinoy Park Hotel, in St. Petersburg, on Jan. 24, 1930. After my original column on Coolidge was published, “Georgia Marble Company” Daniel Wright, of Citrus Springs, wrote: “Perhaps something new will turn up in a private collection that will confirm it one way or the other.” That is still a real possibility. So, please, look through your closets and check your attics. If you can find evidence that Coolidge visited Dade City in 1929, I’d love to see it and to share it with readers of this column, which is published regularly in The Laker/Lutz News. Doug Sanders has a penchant for unearthing interesting stories about local history. His sleuthing skills have been developed through his experiences in newspaper and government work. MEET THE TOOLBOX SISTERS: Expert Home Specialists Special to The Laker / Lutz News

One of the newest names in real estate in Pasco County is the Toolbox Sisters — a unique moniker that captures the knowledge shared by two sisters who maximize new technology to assist their clients. Amanda and Allison Vaughn wanted a memorable name for their company, and one that extolled the importance of technology when selling or buying a home. “As former teachers, Allison and I understand the importance of knowing how to use technology effectively, and the need to embrace innovation that makes research even more accessible,” said Amanda. “Teaching also taught us to be good listeners,” Allison adds. “People tell us of their frustrations with other Realtors who are insistent on showing them homes outside their budget, or in areas where they don’t want to live. We always listen to our clients, and by incorporating the latest in technology, match their needs and desires with the best possible options for their family.” The sisters’ interest in real estate began in 2011, when they moved from Independence, Missouri, to Wesley Chapel for teaching jobs. Learning much from their personal relocation experience, they began to invest in real estate by buying and flipping houses, doing most of the renovation work themselves. Amanda and Allison had so much fun investing in real estate, they decided to study for their Realtor licenses and sell real estate full time. Being younger than many full-time Realtors, the Toolbox Sisters have a long-term approach to their business. “It’s never about the number of homes we

sell, but rather the quality of service we provide our customers,” said Amanda. “We build relationships with our clients by educating and guiding them as trusted advisers. We use tools that most clients are unfamiliar with — something they greatly appreciate.” New home representation is an area that the Toolbox Sisters specializes in. “Most people believe they’ll get a better price if they buy direct from the builder because there’s no real estate commission to pay. But, that simply is not true,” said Amanda. “Builders always include commission in their pricing, and they don’t give the commission back as a discount if the customer buys direct.” The Toolbox Sisters also helps buyers look for resale homes, and even “For Sale by Owner” homes. For sellers, they use technology to get the most money for their property that the market will allow. Call the Toolbox Sisters at (813) 563-7915 or (813) 756-8688 to begin your journey to find the home of your dreams at the best price, best location and with the most incentives.

“WE CREATE FREE TIME FOR BUSY PEOPLE”

Korean War spy shares wartime experiences By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

For nearly 50 years, Eddie Ko didn’t tell a soul about the integral role he played during the Korean War. “Not even my wife or my children,” the now 80-year-old said. But for the past 15 years, the Tampa resident has gladly shared the experiences he had as a 14-year-old spy, helping the United Nations throughout the “Forgotten War.” He began sharing his story in 2002, after he began organizing an annual golf outing for Korean War vets at his golf club — the Quail Hollow Golf Course in Wesley Chapel. The outings — held until he sold the course in 2012 — encouraged vets to share their wartime experiences with family and friends. “Most of the Korean veterans who were in combat — they don’t want to talk about it, even though they are heroes,” Ko said.“Just remember, they were only 18 (years old) or 19 years old, and they had to kill somebody in order to survive. “But...it’s my opinion that I feel better when I talk about it and get everything off of my chest,” Ko said. In June of 1950, about 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army invaded Ko’s homeland of South Korea. They wiped out thousands of civilians, including his Christian missionary parents. “That really hurt my heart,” Ko said. “That day forward, I decided I was not going to be accepting of the (North Korean) army.” His anger possessed him to join the Student Volunteer Army, an anticommunist group of 12 teenage spies spearheaded by a South Korean officer with ties to the U.S. military.

SCHOOL, from page 1A This will be a special year at Rodney B. Cox Elementary, at 37615 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., in Dade City, as the school celebrates its 90th anniversary — with festivities planned throughout the year. While some schools are launching new initiatives, others are continuing on paths they began last year. For instance, Wiregrass Ranch High, at 2909 Mansfield Blvd., in Wesley Chapel, will stick with a 10-period school day for the 2016-2017 school year. Next year, a new high school, now being built on Old Pasco Road, will open to relieve overcrowding. By having a 10-period day, the school can provide a less crowded campus for most of the school day, according to Principal Robyn White There will be some changes, though, White said. For instance, it will go back to having pep rallies during the day, instead of after school, because it found it had a higher participation rate. It also has changed its schedule to close down one of its buildings later in the day because it found that most of the discipline issues it dealt with last year happened in that building later in the day, when there were fewer classes there. “Typically, during passing, the teachers are standing outside the door,” White explained. When there are just a couple of classes in a building, there are fewer teach-

BROWNING, from page 1A differently about the way we educate our kids.Apparently, something is not clicking. It’s not producing the results that we absolutely have to have, in order to be successful under the state’s accountability system.” Whether the district likes the state’s system or not, the superintendent added,“it is, what it is.” Vanessa Hilton, assistant superintendent for student achievement, provided a presentation explaining differences in the state’s calculations for this year’s grades, noting key areas needing attention and identifying strategies for tackling the issues.

KEVIN WEISS/STAFF PHOTOS

Eddie Ko, 80, visited the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans’ Nursing Home on July 26. He worked as a teenage spy during the Korean War.

“At 14 years old, you don’t really have patriotism — you have ‘revengism.’The revenge of mine was so mad that I really wanted to help the Americans,” Ko said. For three years, he penetrated enemy lines, and relayed valuable information to U.S. Navy Lt. Eugene Clark. Working as a teenage spy, Ko was the first to discover that Chinese Communist Forces had crossed the border into North Korea to join the fight against the United Nations. That tip prevented U.S. Marines from walking into an ambush of nearly 120,000 Chinese soldiers. ers to supervise the area, she explained. The school will be keeping the fifth lunch period it added last year because it helped make the lunch periods more manageable,White added. At Pine View Middle, 5334 Parkway Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes, the school will be entering its second year as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Candidate School. The program aims to expand learning opportunities for all children, and to broaden connections by providing instruction that’s deeper and wider. Some schools will stick with tried-andtrue traditions. Wesley Chapel Elementary School, at 30243 Wells Road in Wesley Chapel, for example, will have its annual Boohoo Breakfast. “Whether you are saddened or excited, we would love to see you in the cafeteria on the first day of school, beginning at 9:30 a.m.” the school’s website proclaims, referring to the breakfast. When children arrive on campus at Wesley Chapel Elementary, they’ll be greeted by Stan Mykita, the school’s new principal. Parents who want to know more about their child’s school, how to get involved, how to help their child and details about such things as bus stops, school lunch prices and supplies, can find much of the information they need on their individual school’s website. Some information is also available on the district’s website, at Pasco.k12.fl.us.

School board member Allen Altman said he doesn’t want to overreact, but at the same time doesn’t want to underreact, either. Board member Alison Crumbley said the district may want to take a look at what’s working in its A and B schools, too, to see if those practices can be used in other schools. School board member Cynthia Armstrong said,“You’ve identified what you need to do. The what, but not really the how.” Armstrong said she’d like another board workshop to get more detail on how the district plans to accomplish the strategies it has laid out. Browning got the message:“We will schedule another workshop, to delve in, once we kind of put the meat on the bones,” he said.

Eddie Ko provides free copies of the book, ‘Korea Reborn: A Grateful Nation Honors War Veterans for 60 Years of Growth,’ to Korean war veterans.

“They didn’t even know that the Chinese were involved,” Ko said. “The lack of intelligence was the biggest fault during the Korean War.” Nearly 34,000 Americans were killed during the Korean War. “A lot of Americans died because they didn’t even know where they were, and who they were fighting,” he said. To gather intel, a young Ko lurked alongside enemy commanders, asking seemingly innocent questions: How many soldiers are here? Are more reinforcements on the way? Where are the heavy tanks? Ko would report his findings to American forces either via radio communication, or in person.

HOTELS, from page 1A ally ahead of projections.” While business travelers still fill up most of Pasco’s hotel rooms, Caum said more leisure travelers are coming into the mix. That market is expected to grow as the county reaps benefits from tourist destinations such as Tampa Premium Outlets, more

“Many times it was very risky,” Ko said. He used faith to help him handle the stressful moments and constant anxiety. “I became very, very religious at the time and very, very confident in myself,” Ko said. “That’s what helped me survive for three years.” The Korean War came to an end after an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953. North and South Korea remain separate and occupy almost the same territory since the war began. After the war, Ko left South Korea to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. He attended high school in East Orange, New Jersey, and subsequently volunteered for the draft in 1956. He served three years in the U.S. Army, working in counterintelligence and civilian affairs in South Korea. “I thought wearing a U.S. uniform, I could help the Korean people more. I’m so proud I did that,” Ko said. He became a successful businessman, and owned three golf courses in Florida before selling them. Ko now serves as the chairman for the Korean War monument at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. 301 in Tampa. He often visits the 20 Korean War veteran’s association chapters throughout Florida. He tells his story, and gives out copies of the book, “Korea Reborn:A Grateful Nation Honors War Veterans for 60 Years of Growth.” Ko presents the book — which is a retrospective look at the Korean War and the prosperity that followed — to help uplift Korean War veterans. “They should be proud of their service,” Ko said.“After 80 percent of Korea was destroyed, now 50 million Korean people live in peace, and it’s one of the strongest economic countries in the world.” retail and restaurants at Cypress Creek Town Center, Florida Hospital Center Ice, SunWest Park and TreeHoppers Aerial Adventure Park. About 6,000 people are employed by the hospitality industry in Pasco, including at hotels and restaurants. Supportive businesses indirectly account for more than 12,000 additional people being employed. “That’s huge,” said Caum.

Area fall football preview: Pasco County By Kevin Weiss

T

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

he 2016 high school football season is just around the corner and several teams in our coverage area enter the year with intriguing storylines, standout players and must-see matchups.

THREE TEAMS TO WATCH: SUNLAKE SEAHAWKS The Seahawks enter the 2016 campaign with plenty of momentum, especially after a 54-13 thrashing of Hernando High School in their spring game. The Seahawks look to build on that May 20 victory, as well as their 8-3 mark in 2015. Sunlake returns several key pieces on offense and defense, starting with pro-style quarterback Justin Hall, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior capable of filling up a stat sheet (1,729 yards, 17 TDs, 3 interceptions) Hall will have plenty of weapons at his disposal, led by scatback Justin Metzger FILE PHOTO (577 yards, 5 TDs) and three receivers with at Sunlake enters 2016 with six conseculeast 20 receptions (Ryan Clark, Cris Galdos, tive winning seasons. Tyler Peretti.) On defense, three of the team’s top four tacklers return, led by Galdos, a senior linebacker who makes plays all over the field. One major question for the Seahawks is how quickly a makeshift offensive line will gel after the graduations of three anchors—Leo Baez, Bryce Cooley and Joe Russum.

WIREGRASS RANCH BULLS

FILE PHOTO

Staying healthy will be key for Wiregrass Ranch in 2016.

If not an improved team,Wiregrass Ranch High School should at least be an interesting one. The Bulls, who haven’t had a winning season since 2010, are stacked with Division I prospects — led by juniors Jordan Miner and Shamaur McDowell. Several new faces are expected to make an impact, as well, starting with former AATL two-way player Daniel Biglow, and A.J. Brown, a rangy wide receiver from Carrollton,Texas.Another player to keep an eye on is sophomore quarterback Grant Sessums, who’s opened eyes at various statewide football camps this summer. While a talented bunch, the biggest key to having more success is staying healthy all yearlong. Last season, Mark Cantor’s Bulls suffered 19 season-ending injuries, virtually crawling to a lethargic 2-8 finish.

ZEPHYRHILLS BULLDOGS The Bulldogs are entering the 2016 season with a first-time head coach and several unproven players. Nick Carroll — a longtime Sunlake High School assistant — has big shoes to fill in taking over for the revered Reginald Roberts (39-23 in six seasons). The pressure to win immediately will be elevated, considering the program’s recent triumphs. But, winning won’t come easy, considering the Bulldogs’ top offensive playmaker — running back Antwione Sims — will miss several FILE PHOTO games due to injury. Moreover, the Bulldogs Players like Myles Carter (No. 3) will be expectmust find more impactful reinforcements ed to step up for a Zephyrhills team that lost after the graduations of their top receiver several impact players from last season. (Jackie Tucker Jr.) and top three tacklers (Kevin Lee, Arttonyo Lee Jr., Leonardo Guzman) from last year’s 8-3 team. The team will also be without defensive end Zander Lemay (47 tackles, 3.5 sacks), who recently transferred to Tampa Catholic High School — forcing the new coaching staff to find yet another replacement heading into the season.

THREE PLAYERS TO WATCH: ZEPHYRHILLS SENIOR RUNNING BACK ANTWIONE SIMS

Depending on when one the of the area’s most electrifying playmakers returns to the field, fans will surely flock to the stands to see the 5-11, 196-pound Sims (2,093 rushing yards, 24 TDs.) The senior is likely to miss “most of the season” after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in March, but a possible late-season return could prove vital for the Bulldogs down the stretch. Once he returns to the gridiron, it will be interesting to see if Sims still has the same quickness and speed he showed in 2015. A consensus three-star recruit, Sims has 11 scholarships offers, which includes Boston College and Navy.

SUNLAKE SENIOR RECEIVER/LINEBACKER CRIS GALDOS

What Galdos lacks in measurables, he more than makes up for with his production. The 5-foot-7, 170-pound do-it-all playmaker is widely viewed as one of the most versatile football players in Pasco County. His offensive statistics (21 receptions, 224 yards, 2 TDs) coupled with his defensive prowess (81 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, four interceptions) are a key to Sunlake’s continued success. His workout numbers are also impressive: 4.60 40-yard dash, 30-inch vertical jump, 290-pound bench press and 405-pound squat. Galdos recently received his first scholarship offer (University of Saint Francis in Indiana) and is likely to receive a few more by the season’s end.

WIREGRASS RANCH JUNIOR DEFENSIVE BACK JORDAN MINER

Pasco County typically doesn’t produce many Division I football prospects on an annual basis, so it’s always worth noting when a player entering just his junior year already has five DI offers— Bowling Green University, Middle Tennessee State University, University of South Florida, University of Toledo and Tulane University. At 6-foot-1, 185-pounds, Miner has the size that major college programs crave in a defensive back. In seven games last season, Miner made an impact in both the second-

ary (35 tackles, 1 interception) and as a kick returner (34 yards per return.) It won’t be a surprise if Wiregrass Ranch foes avoid the passing game, considering one of Miner’s teammates in the secondary — cornerback Shamaur McDowell — is also a Division I prospect, with several offers. Naturally, football runs in Miner’s family — his older brother, Jaye Miner, is a linebacker at Florida Atlantic University, a Division I school.

THREE GAMES TO WATCH: WIREGRASS RANCH @ GAITHER (OCT. 21, 7:30 P.M.)

• Two teams loaded with college prospects face off in a late-season game that’s sure to bring several recruiters to North Tampa.

MITCHELL @ SUNLAKE (OCT. 21, 7:30 P.M.)

• Sunlake looks for revenge at home after Mitchell handed the Seahawks their lone district loss last season. The matchup also pits two of Pasco’s top quarterbacks against each other in Mitchell’s Larry Dalla Betta and Sunlake’s Justin Hall.

ZEPHYRHILLS @ PASCO (NOV. 4, 7:30 P.M.)

• Though last season’s 9-Mile-War was lopsided in favor of the Bulldogs; this year’s matchup should be a closer affair.

back-to-the-farm movement is spurring a new kind of small business entrepreneur. From small u-pick blueberry farms to backyard chicken roosts to garden vegetable patches, more and more people are finding their calling in the cottage food industry. They often set up shop in farmers’ markets, food truck rallies and local festivals. For many, it is a new direction in their lives. “This is a dream for some people,” said Whitney Elmore, Pasco County extension director. “It can be the start of something bigger. We can help them do that.” About 75 people attended the inaugural Tampa Bay Cottage Industry Expo on July 30 at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel. The daylong workshop gave participants a chance to learn from experts from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, the Florida Department of Agricultural and Consumer Sciences, and cottage industry entrepreneurs. The expo laid the groundwork for what organizers hope will become an annual event. Novena Prayer to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal

I

mmaculate Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus and my mother, I come to you with confidence in your powerful intercession, manifested through your Miraculous Medal.

As your loving, trustful child I ask this favor...Obtain for me as well, a pure heart, that my entire life may give glory to God. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.

Amen.
