Growth spurs school construction By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When Pasco County School Board member Alison Crumbley considers anticipated growth along the State Road 54/56 corridor, she said, she is “taken aback.” She worries about the school district’s ability to provide schools for all of the students who will be moving into the new communities that are taking shape along that corridor. Superintendent Kurt Browning shares that sentiment. “That 54 corridor concerns me greatly,” Browning said, during a recent school board workshop on the district’s construction plans. “Our need certainly outpaces our resources,” the superintendent said. “When you look at the 54 corridor, from really, Little Road to just beyond Wiregrass, that’s Curley Road — there is so much growth and projected growth.

“Nor, do I want to build new schools and, the next thing you know, you see portables being pulled up on those school campuses,” Browning said. The lack of revenue has prompted the school district to launch an impact fee study, which could lead to higher school impact fees paid for new construction of residential properties in Pasco County. Meanwhile, the district is engaged in numerous construction projects and have others planned in the near future. B.C. Bryant said.“I think the price reflects that.” The bank currently has six branch locations in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, and in Sarasota. There also is a loan company in Clearwater. Details on the transition are being worked out, and it is not clear yet if any locations will close, Bryant said. The merger is part of a trend that has emerged since the financial crisis of more than five years ago, he said. One reason is that low interest rates are affecting banks’ operating margins. But another issue is the increase in banking regulations in response to the crisis. Smaller banks, in particular, are burdened with absorbing regulatory costs, Bryant said. “I think there is some pressure on the banking sector that would suggest consolidation is going to continue,” he said.

Wesley Chapel company expects to expand to new markets By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

KeriCure Inc., a Wesley Chapel company, has secured a patent that is expected to open new doors for partnerships with pharmaceutical and medical device companies. “Our foundation of the company was actually built around this nanoparticle drug delivery technology that I helped to create at the University of South Florida,” said Kerriann Greenhalgh, who operates the company from her Wesley Chapel home. The company, which launched in 2011, has been offering consumer products to help promote the healing of cuts and wounds on people and pets, through liquid bandages sprayed on the skin. The polymer retains its elasticity, protecting the wound and allowing the cut to heal. The products for people are sold under the names Natural Seal Liquid Bandage, Natural Seal and Natural Seal on the Go, and are available at Publix, Kroger, Price Choppers, Marsh and Meijer, and in natural product stores throughout the United States. The pet products are known as Tough Seal for Pets and Champion Seal, and are available online and at some feed stores. The company also has a professional line of liquid bandage products, under the name of KeriCure’s Advanced Seal — Rx for Medical Use. That formulation is used by B.C. “We’re not only out there to gain a better knowledge and pulse of the business community, but also to take action and champion these things,” Mikkelsen said. Overall, business owners were upbeat about the future. About 82 percent said they felt Zephyrhills was moving in the right direction in creating a business-friendly atmosphere. About 38 percent said they planned to hire additional employees in the next six months. And, none were planning layoffs. Sales volumes are increasing, and the trend is expected to continue during the next 12 months. Half of business owners said they would expand facilities in the next two years, and 60 percent expected to invest in new equipment. Growth is not being hindered due to lack of capital or financing, and that trend likely will continue. The survey also showed the commercial reach of Zephyrhills, which is strategically located near major road systems with access to markets beyond Pasco County and the Tampa Bay region. That reach may be surprising to some. Many Zephyrhills companies sell statewide and nationwide. About 45 percent

of surveyed companies reported international sales to Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and the Mediterranean. “There are a lot of gems here,” said Mikkelsen. “It’s truly a remarkable coming of age for Zephyrhills.” The report establishes a foundation for future spin-off activities and programs that bolster Zephyrhills’ ongoing economic growth. As future reports are done, trends can be spotted and opportunities can emerge, Mikkelsen said. The implications go beyond this one report, said John Hagen, president of the Pasco Economic Development Council. “It’s a good thing to do for the community, but it also is a template for other communities,” he said. “What we’re trying to accomplish, other than just working in Zephyrhills, is to work out a methodology that we can then duplicate and use in other communities and with other chambers.” In the future, Hagen said he anticipates efforts to share the Zephyrhills’ experience as a model of how to conduct a proactive business survey. It was the first locally initiated program of its type in Pasco County. “That is something for Zephyrhills to be truly proud of,” said Mikkelsen. “We did it because we needed to, but that is an indication that we did it right. It’s really exciting.”

With school out for summer, more teens are on the road and more families are taking vacations or enjoying weekend outings. It’s easy to get distracted, and it never hurts to hear some reminders on driving safety. It’s an important issue. The Florida Department of Health points to statistics compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to remind people of just how important it is to use care when driving. In 2013, Florida’s age-adjusted injury death rate for unintentional motor vehicle injury was 12.46 percent per 100,000 people, according to CDC figures. “Responsible driving habits keep our communities safe and healthy for everyone,” State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong said in a news release.“It is especially important for adults to model safe-driving skills for our future drivers.” To reduce your risks of transportation-

related injury, the National Safety Council recommends: • Designating a sober driver or making other transportation arrangements • Driving the appropriate speed for conditions • Getting plenty of sleep before you drive and scheduling regular breaks to avoid getting tired • Avoiding cellphone use while driving, even a hands-free device causes distraction • Practicing with your teen, even after he or she is licensed. Parental involvement reduces teens’ crash risks. According to the National Safety Council, half of teens will be involved in a crash before graduating from high school. Survey results from Liberty Mutual and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) indicate that teens succumb to more risky in-vehicle behaviors during the summer months. These behaviors lead to more crashes, serious injuries and deaths than during the school year. The National Safety Council reports that nearly 100 people die every day on our roadways, in preventable car crashes due to

alcohol, speeding, fatigue and distraction. According to Danielle Branciforte from the Florida Teen Safe Driving Coalition, “The top three reasons teens die in crashes are because of inexperience behind the wheel, distracted driving (cellphones, peer passengers, eating, etc.) and speeding.” Daphne Lampley, of LiveFree! Coalition, said “Adults play a crucial role in making sure that when teens get behind the wheel, they understand they are in control of their lives and not invincible from danger.” Below are tips from LiveFree! and their partners that you can use to talk with teens to help keep them safe while driving. • Limit the number of passengers allowed in the car while your teen is driving • Tell your teen to power off their cellphone, and to put it in a purse or glove compartment so they are not tempted to use it while driving • Remind your teen that underage drinking is illegal, and they must not drink • Wear a seatbelt. • Obey posted speed limit signs. Tennis app serves up statistics By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Lutz resident John Straumann was playing tennis several months ago and was trying to keep statistics on how his shots were going during a match. It wasn't going well. "One of the biggest things was trying to track unforced errors versus winners, and I was trying to do it in my head. It was impossible," said Straumann, who was then living in Washington. "I started thinking, well, this new Apple Watch is coming out. I wonder if I could do something so I could track the stuff myself." Like many people, Straumann thought he had come up with a pretty good idea for a mobile device application. But unlike the vast majority of those people, he actually designed the app, tested it and brought it to market. ScoreIt! Tennis is now available in Apple's iTunes App Store. Straumann graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in computer science and engineering, and works in software sales, so it might sound like designing an app would be easy for Straumann. After all, he'd been doing it for years. There was just one problem: All his experience was with the Microsoft Windows platform. Apple's operating system is different, and he didn't own an Apple computer or an iPhone. He didn't even own the watch that was supposed to be the platform for his new app. So, he invested about $5,000 in the current technology and taught himself the ins and outs of Apple hardware and software. He spent a couple of hours in the evenings after work and got up early on Saturday mornings to write and test the app before his family woke up. During the same time frame, the family also was moving from Washington to Lutz. It may sound like a lot of sacrifice and effort but, for Straumann, it was a form of challenging fun. "It was almost more interesting to me because it was new. It was learning something new, taking on a new project, a new technology," he said.

PHOTO COURTESY OF JOHN STRAUMANN MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTO

John Straumann's work center in his Lutz home is more like a command station, with desktop computers, laptops and smartphones working together on his projects. It's where he developed the ScoreIt! sports apps for the Apple iWatch in his spare time.

In less than two months, he had an app ready to go. Wearing an iWatch, a tennis player can record his or her statistics during a match. With a couple of swipes after each point, players can record what type of shots they hit and how they fared. If there's an unforced error, the player can log it was a forehand, backhand or serve return, for example. For winners, slices, drop shots, lobs and other types of shots can be recorded instantly and analyzed later. Designing an app is one thing, but making it useful is another. And Straumann wanted to make sure it would work as well on the court as it did on his computer. "The biggest things were ease of input and connectivity," he said. Because the iWatch has to be in constant communication with a companion iPhone for the app to work, he had to make sure the connection would be strong from various distances on a tennis court. And he didn't want recording each shot to interfere with the natural flow of a game. Once a player learns how to use the app, recording statistics should take about a second, he said.

Once he had a useful app, he obtained a developer program membership and sent it to Apple for their testing and review. If they approve it, it's ready to go. But if there's a problem, Straumann said they don't offer much insight into what's wrong. He had to wait a couple of weeks to get the verdict. Apple responded with the green light. So it was ready for market, right? Not quite. It turns out that Straumann was a harsher critic than Apple itself. "I wasn't happy with what I had done, so I rejected it myself and then submitted it again," he said. After a couple more tweaks, and a little more back and forth, both sides were happy, and he felt good about what he had produced. The app has only been out for a matter of weeks, but Straumann is happy with the response he's seen so far. At $1.99 (with no ads), Apple gets about 25 percent of the tennis app revenue, allowing Straumann to see a little monetary compensation for his efforts as well. And the ScoreIt! app family has already grown. A golf app for the iWatch is designed

The app is designed to be utilized on the court during a game. Straumann said it should only take about a second to input the necessary data.

to help players keep score on their watches and input data based on the particular course they're playing. An update to the tennis app also lets players use it to keep score if they'd prefer to do that instead. Another feature allows a parent or coach to track tennis stats via a non-watch device while the player is on the court. The new app business is a family affair for the Straumanns. The website introduces daughters Alex (marketing and social media) and Avery (gameplay consultant), as well as wife Patti (graphics) as important team partners. And while he considers designing apps for Apple devices to be a fun project (he's now a fan of their products), Straumann said the tennis app has real-world uses for people looking to improve their game. By analyzing the statistics, trends will develop that show what areas are strengths for a player and what areas need more work in practice, he said. "I think if they really use it, they can look at things they can improve," he said. For more information, visit ScoreItapp.com, or look up ScoreIt! Tennis in Apple's App Store.

Local mom's website highlights family friendly fun By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

As a mother with two young children, Miriam Cook wanted to find inexpensive, family friendly things to do. The Land O' Lakes resident would search the Internet for fun places to go, but was frustrated that it wasn't as easy as it should have been. "I was watching online and couldn't really find anything that was what I wanted, with events and stuff like that," Cook said. "So I thought, I have to create my own." Around eight months ago, she did just that. Now, FamilyFriendlyTampaBay.com is a destination for thousands of users each week, highlighting local freebies, cheap movies and other low-cost activities that everyone in the family can enjoy. Cook takes her job as event seeker seriously, with specific criteria in mind when she's looking for places to go. She's looking for places that appeal to all family members, so children of all ages can have fun. Alcohol can't be the focus of the event, she said, and accommodations like restroom facilities are important. Price matters, too, of course. Cook uses her own family as a template. She has two sisters with children who are in

the education field, and she wants to highlight events that families like theirs can afford. As a former preschool teacher herself, she knows that families often have to stick to a tight budget, and the event has to be something that fits, or is worth saving for if it's pricier. Her website is finding an audience. She records about 225,000 page views a month, with about 54,000 different users in that time frame. And they're sharing their opinions too, which Cook says makes her project unique. "There are a couple sites that are similar to mine, but none of them have reviews." Readers can find ideas on the website, then go on the Facebook page and share their opinions about what they did. Cook brings her own review committee with her when she attends events. If daughters Jasmine, 5, and Hazel, 3, want to go back to a destination, Cook knows she has a winner. And on weekends, husband Ben joins in as well. Still, it takes work to keep a popular website running and current with the latest happenings. She spends time each day researching deals in the area, and her email inbox is full of messages from different busi-

nesses and public relations companies. She filters through the offerings and compiles the list she thinks represents the best of Tampa Bay. The site isn't a moneymaker yet, but Cook can see it growing into a business in the future. She's already planning expansions into other markets such as Orlando and Miami. But for now she's working toward building the site's popularity and gaining the trust of local families. And the positive feedback she's received from friends and people at her church is an indication that she's on the right track. "My focus has really just been trying to get the word out that my website's here to help people out," Cook said. Cook also wants those families who visit the site to attend and support as many events as possible, which will encourage companies to take note of the demand for events that go easy on a budget and everyone can enjoy. "If we go and participate in these events, then they're more likely to cater to families and make sure that their events or their location is more family friendly," Cook said. For more information, visit FamilyFriendlyTampaBay.com.

A side benefit of running a website about family friendly events is that there are places to visit. Daughters Hazel, left, and Jasmine approved of the outing to The Potter's House Studio in south Tampa, which was running a special.

Land O’ Lakes/Lutz - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse,

turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800-244 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

Big changes for businesses processing credit cards By Mike Matthew Special to The Laker / Lutz News In just a few months, business owners who process credit card payments will benefit from a favorable new rule regarding Fraud Liability — so long as they meet certain criteria. “Beginning in October, 2015, the liability on fraudulent transactions switches to the issuing bank instead of the merchant, so long as the merchant is able to process credit cards that have the new chip technology,” explains Terry Inman, President and CEO of Vecter Technologies, LLC. “The new chip technology is known in the industry as EMV (Europay MasterCard Visa) which is a technical standard for smart payment cards.” “However, businesses that are unable to process smart cards will continue to be liable for fraudulent transactions,” Terry explains. In order to benefit from this important change, Vecter Technologies is updating its current customer base, while also helping new merchants, by providing compliant credit card processing equipment needed to process EMV transactions. “Vecter loans EMV capable equipment to qualifying merchants at no cost,” says Terry. “Vecter never leases equipment to its customers, as equipment is constantly changing to meet processing demands. In many cases, merchants are stuck in a lease where the equipment they are using is no longer a viable solution. Lease options can be a costly investment to the merchant.” Terry goes on to say, “We encourage businesses to upgrade their equipment which will allow them to accept EMV, near communications, and swipe transactions now, and not wait until the liability shift in October.” EMV cards, or smart cards, which have been in use for years in Canada and Europe, have a small computer embedded in them which significantly reduces credit card fraud. “These smart cards help with fraud prevention and will not be usable if a thief attempts to skim

the card numbers, which is unfortunately something that can happen with magnetic stripe cards today,” Terry stated. “Even though Pay at the Pump stations and ATM locations are prevalent to these type of fraudulent transactions, the Fraud Liability shift for these services will not go into effect until October, 2017. The reason for the delay is due to the significant equipment investment and the limited number of certified installation technicians across the country.” “The liability shift gives issuing banks a real incentive to provide customers with EMV credit cards,” Terry said, “even though they are more expensive to manufacture than traditional magnetic stripe cards commonly used today.” “This means smart cards will quickly become the standard card used by most consumers. It’s essential that businesses update their processing equipment so they are ready to accept smart card transactions,” Terry noted. In addition to providing credit card processing services, Vecter Technologies has a proprietary point of sale system (POS) called Total Commerce. It also offers an industry specific POS system for cigar merchants called Fuego Total Commerce, and a software application specifically designed for private schools called Total Campus, in order to provide a cashless environment. In addition to having their own frontend gateway, they are also certified on most Point of Sale software solutions including tablet systems such as BreadCrumb, iConnect, and ShopKeep. Vecter Technologies, with sales offices in 22 states, differs from its competitors as its sales agents earn a portion of the residual revenue instead of an up-front commission. “This creates a personal relationship between the agent and the merchant. It also provides a real incentive for the agent to assist in resolving any merchant related issues that may arise,” said Terry. Vecter Technologies is a register Agent of Citizens Bank NA, Providence, RI and utilizes WorldPay as its primary acquiring partner. Terry and his wife, Kristan, are the sole owners of Vecter Technologies, LLC. The main office is located in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. They welcome calls from business owners wanting to learn more about the upcoming industry changes and how they can prepare their business for the future.

Tips to avoid summer storm dangers Take Back Your Free Time! The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

• Serving clients for over 30 years • Licensed, Bonded, Insured

With school out for summer and families enjoying vacations, more people are spending time outdoors. And, in Florida, spontaneous rain showers often occur during summer. Those storms often take the form of torrential downpours and lightning strikes. The Florida Department of Health wants to remind everyone to remain vigilant of severe weather. “This summer, as you enjoy Florida's great outdoors, stay ahead of severe weather by knowing the forecast and having a plan to get indoors," said State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong, in a news release “Be prepared for any weather change, expected or otherwise.” In order to ensure all enjoy the outdoors safely, it is important to understand the dangers of lightning and follow a safety plan in case of inclement weather. For the past 30 years, lightning ranks just behind tornadoes and flooding in weather-related deaths, the news release says. “Florida averages more lightning strikes per square mile than any other state, and our abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities makes lightning a very serious concern,” said Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Bryan W. Koon. “Our Kids Get A Plan campaign is one of the tools we use to address lightning safety. Visit our website, KidsGetaPlan.com, for an interactive book about lightning safety, The 30/30 Rule, and to talk to your family about how you can remain safe when the threat of lightning is present.” The National Weather Service offers safety tips to avoid the threat of lightning.

30 Years Experience Trimming Trees By Meaghan O’Neal Special to The Laker / Lutz News

Buck Rollings is passionate about making trees healthy and safe, and his crew at Omega Tree Service shares his commitment. Buck is the owner of Omega Tree Service, a commercial tree trimming company that has been in business for over 30 years. Buck bought the business three years ago when he retired from the U.S. Marines Corps after 20 years of service. Buck was already a certified arborist (having owned orchards in Texas), before buying Omega. With the business came key crewmembers who had been with Omega for many years. “The crew that came with Omega has been invaluable, because they are keeping alive the craftsmanship of tree trimming by training our younger employees,” said Buck. Buck explains that tree trimming is an art that is dying — a skill that can’t be found in books. “It’s something you learn by doing,” Buck explains. “There’s a huge difference between having the knowledge of how a tree should look, and then actually being able to trim a tree safely and accurately.” Once you understand how trees should be trimmed, it’s troubling when you see trees that are trimmed incorrectly, Buck says. “There’s only one way to trim trees, and that’s the right way,” says Buck. All of Omega’s crewmembers are certified, and all participate in ongoing training with other arborists in the area, as well as enrolling in programs taught

by the University of South Florida. Because felling trees and trimming massive tree limbs can be extremely dangerous, Omega’s employees are trained to avoid accidents and know how to leave a tree so it’s safe for customers. “Trimming trees improperly doesn’t just make them less appealing visually, but it can actually make them very dangerous to homeowners. That is why we put so much time into training and making sure our work is done correctly,” said Buck. Another priority of Buck and his staff is prolonging the longevity of their customers’ trees. “We are very passionate about finding ways to preserve trees, instead of doing major work just for the money,” he said. With Omega’s extensive experience and equipment, it primarily focuses on larger tree trimming jobs. Buck and his crew do a lot of work in Lutz and Land O’ Lakes because there are so many mature, older trees in this area.

SCHOOL, from page 1A offer a curriculum that emphasizes science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. Quail Hollow Elementary, set to reopen in August, has a new floor plan that established individual classrooms in the formerly “open” school. The school also will have updated building systems, technology on par with any new elementary school in the district and a new cafeteria with a stage. The school district also is in the process of designing three new schools, Elementary W in Wiregrass Ranch, Elementary B in Bexley Ranch, and High School GGG on Old Pasco Road, which will open as a school for sixth grade through 12th grade. The district also is planning additional schools in the Wesley Chapel area. “Elementary W is the first of potentially three or four in Wiregrass,” Williams said during the board workshop. The district is working on a new design for Elementary B in Bexley Ranch, because it wants the school to accommodate more students than a typical district elementary school, Williams said. Bexley Ranch will provide substantial relief for Oakstead and Odessa elementary schools, Williams said. Other future schools are proposed for the Bexley Ranch area, and a future elementary school is planned for Starkey Ranch. A future middle school is also proposed for Starkey Ranch,Williams said. The district also already has purchased land for a future school on the south side of State Road 54. The biggest concern about middle school capacity is in the Wesley Chapel area, Williams said. High School GGG, which will serve grades six through 12, will provide significant relief to Wesley Chapel area middle schools and high schools. Wiregrass Ranch High has so many students, it is going to a 10-period day for the next two years to manage the number of students on campus at one time. High School GGG will have a capacity of 1,900 students. It is expected to draw students from areas now assigned to Wiregrass Ranch and Wesley Chapel high schools, and Weightman and Long middle schools. The district is using this approach because it can’t afford to build both a high school and a middle school. As population grows and demand increases, the district plans to build Middle School HH at the same location. The boundary process for High School GGG and Elementary School B is expected to begin in about 18 months, the planning

director said. Williams said he is concerned about the ability of Mitchell, Sunlake and Land O’ Lakes high schools to absorb anticipated future enrollment. “Land O’ Lakes (High), hopefully, when we remodel that school, we can add some capacity. It’s not going to be enough for long-term,” Williams said. “We do have a high school site promised to us in Bexley Ranch. That potentially is going to have a big impact, especially on Sunlake. “I continue to look for two additional high school sites, one in the Land O’ Lakes area and one in the (State Road) 54/Suncoast Parkway area,”Williams said. But he added: “Those are hard to come by.” “There is a high school site promised in the River Landing area, that could potentially impact Wesley Chapel, Wiregrass and Zephyrhills,” Williams said. “It would be along the extension of State Road 56. It would be east of Mansfield, but on the west side of Morris Bridge Road. Zephyr Egg Property, if you’d ever heard of that,” he said. School Board member Allen Altman said he’s worried that the increasing need to spend money on new construction will make it that much harder for the district to maintain the buildings it has. It’s a known fact that proper maintenance saves taxpayers money in the long term, but the district doesn’t have a choice. It must spend money to provide school capacity, he said. While the district considers its longrange plans and short-term needs, construction continues. Elementary W, being built between John Long Middle School and Wiregrass Ranch High, is set to open in 2016. When it opens, it will be possible for students to attend elementary school through college on the same street, since PascoHernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch is just down the road. Williams expects the school boundary process for Elementary W to begin in October or November. That school will help relieve crowding at Seven Oaks and Double Branch elementary schools, but the particulars of how that will be achieved have not been determined yet. “Seven Oaks really popped this year,” Williams said. Meanwhile, in East Pasco, the school district will be building a new cafeteria, and doing parking and traffic improvements at Cox Elementary. Pasco Elementary also is getting some improvements, as plans call for remodeling several buildings,Williams said.

COMPANY, from page 1A applications. With a patent granted in June, Greenhalgh expects her unique polymer to be used in a much broader array of applications. The patent “gives us the opportunity to talk to larger pharmaceutical companies — who have products, drugs, bioactives that they want to deliver topically — and tell them we have a great, FDA-cleared system in place now, and that we can incorporate their drug into and provide very sustained release with our product,” Greenhalgh explained. “One area that we’re looking at is in the anti-cancer area,” she said. “We would incorporate a very wellknown anti-cancer drug into our polymer system,” she said. Or, her product could be used to apply radiation seeds topically. Patients could benefit from her company’s product, she said. “The beauty of this is that they wouldn’t have to be getting exposed to massive amounts of radiation. It would be extremely targeted,” she said. “So, you would get rid of a lot of the side effects that happen with radiation. “That is a very serious opportunity,” she said. companies that have an interest in its technology, Greenhalgh said, including 3M. “They have a couple of projects that they’re interested in having us collaborate on.” Greenhalgh said she launched the company as a consumer products company because it was the smoothest way to raise revenue. “We really want to grow in the biotech space and create products for advanced wound care, like chronic wounds and burn wounds,” Greenhalgh said. “We’re actually in talks with a couple of large wound care companies, as a private label. We do have a very interesting opportunity in front of us right now.” “We’ve just been asked to go to CVS and present to its private label group of buyers, so they’re interested in bringing the product on as a CVS product,” she said. “We just got picked up by Cardinal Health. They’re the largest medical product distributor in the U.S.,” she said, adding her company will be attending Cardinal Health’s trade show in Las Vegas this month. It also is presenting at Winn-Dixie’s local buyer division this week. Greenhalgh grew up in New Tampa and graduated from Wharton High School before obtaining her bachelor’s degree and doctorate from USF. The scientist lives with her husband, Daniel Opp, and their son, Nolan Opp, near Quail Hollow.

NEW CRICKET FIELDS IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

Hillsborough County is opening its first designated cricket fields at Evans Park, 1104 N. Kingsway Road in Seffner. The park includes three cricket fields, two lighted batting cages, lights for night matches, covered bleachers and LED scoreboard. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for July 18 at 10 a.m.

HUNTER’S GREEN CHARITY CLASSIC EVENTS NEXT MONTH

The Ninth Annual Hunter’s Green Charity Classic will be take place over two weekends in August. On Aug. 15, a mixed doubles tournament will be followed by a Casino Night. The following weekend, there will be a dance and dinner party Aug. 21, with a golf scramble and awards luncheon scheduled for Aug. 23. The event benefits three charities. For information about these events, contact Allegra Campos at (813) 973-4220. For sponsorship and auction donation, contact Ashley Nelson at (813) 482-0298.

As a champion gymnast and polevaulter, Nikki Carroll relies on her superior balance. But when she found out that she won the Amateur Athletic Union High School Sullivan Award, she became uncharacteristically shaky on her feet. “I was just so shocked. I couldn’t even believe what she was saying,” Carroll recalled about the phone call confirming she won the award. “I had to hold onto the table that was next to me. I almost fell on the floor.” While the AAU hands out the award to four male and four female athletes around the country, just one of each wins the top prize of $10,000 in scholarship money. Carroll, who lives in Land O’ Lakes, beat out hundreds of applicants around the country to take the top female athlete prize. Her athletic accomplishments are impressive – she’s a two-time high school state pole vaulting champion, and she took the top all-around position for gymnastics at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. But, it takes more than physical skill to win the top Sullivan prize. In addition to participating in at least one AAU sport, athletes are also

judged on academics, leadership and character, and had to prepare essay responses on the application. In those areas, Carroll also compared favorably to her peers. She maintained a 3.7 grade point average in high school, coached younger athletes over the summer and volunteered at Feeding America Tampa Bay, where she sorted food and distributed it to the needy. She won’t win any medals by volunteering, but Carroll said the result is rewarding just the same. “It’s such a great feeling, being able to help other people,” she said. Helping young athletes learn new skills was particularly rewarding, Carroll said. Perhaps that’s because she used to be one of those young athletes herself. She’s been doing gymnastics since she was around 5 years old, and her dedication to two sports has required much of her limited free time. At Tampa Catholic High School, Carroll spent several hours a day after school on gymnastics, whether it was beam, bars, floor or vault work. Weekends meant a trip to Merritt Island to practice pole vaulting at Pole Vault City. And that doesn’t count the outof-state traveling. As an AAU participant, Carroll travels to places

like Iowa and New York to compete in gymnastics and pole vaulting events. She’s been to the Big Apple several times just this year, she said. She has enjoyed competing against athletes from different states. She also has had the chance to meet coaches, too, who have provided valuable advice and critiques on her form. She’s even planning to attend a camp run by a coach she met at a competition. Now that she’s graduated high school, Carroll’s schedule will change. But it won’t get easier. She’ll miss gymnastics, but pole vaulting will become a priority, since it earned her a full scholarship to the University of South Florida. Her academic studies will focus on integrative biology in pursuit of a career in either trauma medicine or forensics. And the $10,000 in scholarship money won’t hurt, either. While the monetary prize and the state champion accolades are nice, Carroll is most proud of not just being named a Sullivan winner, but in taking the top female spot out of all eligible high school athletes. “This is on a whole other level than everything else that I’ve done,” Carroll said.

New uniforms for Special Olympics soccer team The Land O’ Lakes High School Unified Special Olympics Soccer Team will compete in the World Games later this month. And they’ll look good doing it. The team received their new uniforms on July 6, and they’ll use them on the field when they travel to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games that begin on July 25. The team leaves for the games on July 20, with a special send-off scheduled for noon at Land O’ Lakes High School, 20325 Gator Lane. The team consists of seven Special Olympics athletes and five partners. Their progress can be followed on the team’s Facebook page, at Facebook.com/LolhsTeamUSA. The team’s journey and progress will be updated via social media throughout the games, which end Aug. 2. For updates, photos and video, follow the team on Facebook at Facebook.com/LolhsTeamUSA, on Instagram at Instagram.com/usaunifiedsoccer and on Twitter at Twitter.com/pascophotos.

CRUISIN’ AT WIREGRASS CAR SHOW

FRED BELLET/PHOTOS

Car enthusiasts found a great deal to checkout on the streets at The Shops at Wiregrass during the Cruisin’ at Wiregrass Classic, Custom & New Car Show.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

P

eople who enjoy browsing had plenty to see at The Shops at Wiregrass during the regional shopping mall’s Cruisin’ at Wiregrass Classic, Custom & New Car Show on July 12. Besides the usual shops and stores, visitors could also check out streets lined with a collection of impressive machines. The event — with its variety and quality of vehicles — was a feast for the eyes.

Car show competitor Larry Eichelberger’s 1939 Ford Deluxe was something to look at as Craig Witt of Wesley Chapel checks it out while holding his son, Ian Witt, 3. The antique was paralleled park next to a Paseo Drive fountain during the mall’s car show.

Ten-year old Dylan Desai finishes inspecting the inside of a 2006 Dodge Charger, Daytona owned by Roberto Rodriguez of Orlando. When Dylan’s father, Ashish Desai, asked the boy if he wanted a muscle car like that one, the New Tampa boy responded, ‘Right now, I’d rather have a new bicycle.’ His father and 7-year-old brother, Sahil, laughed in response.

The highly polished chrome grille of area attorney Dennis Hernandez’ Rolls Royce was a standout at the Cruisin’ at Wiregrass Classic, Custom & New Car Show. The partially silhouetted image of Palm Harbor resident Reggie Robert reflects on the shiny metal, as the car’s hood ornament looms above.

Tom Rowledge’s bicycle ride is always eventful. Rowledge, of Wesley Chapel, lives nearby and rides through The Shops at Wiregrass almost daily. During his ride last Sunday, Rowledge put on the brakes as a customized Smart Car owned by Xplizit Car Club member, Angelo Nance of Orlando, caught his eye.

Yianthoni Fuentes’ 2011 Toyota Corolla was spotless, and he was keeping it that way prior to the official judging.

A headlight reflector on Robert Thibodeau’s 1957 Chevy is great for spreading the light of your high beams, said the Valrico man who was competing in the Cruisin’ at Wiregrass Classic, Custom & New Car Show competition. Bill Barrett of New Tampa just happened to be looking the car over as seen in the highly polished chrome above the headlamp.

Keeping your pet safe this summer The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Summertime can be an especially risky time for poisoning accidents with pets. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Poison Control Center offers these tips to help keep your pets safe: • Don’t leave alcoholic beverages within reach of your pets. Alcoholic beverages have the potential to poison pets. If ingested, the animal could become very intoxicated and weak, severely depressed or could go into a coma. In severe cases, your pet could die from respiratory failure. • Don’t apply sunscreen or insect repellent on your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Ingestion of sunscreen products can result in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy. The misuse of insect repellent that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems. • Always keep matches and lighter fluid away from your pets. Certain types of matches contain chlorates, which could damage blood cells and result in difficulty breathing—or, in severe cases, kidney disease. Lighter fluid can irritate skin, and, if ingested, can produce gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop. • Don’t put glow jewelry on your pets, or allow them to play with it. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not highly toxic, excessive drooling and gastrointestinal irritation could still result from ingestions, and intestinal block-

age could occur from swallowing large pieces of the plastic containers. • Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products away from your pets. Ingestions can produce stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. If inhaled, the oils could cause aspiration pneumonia in pets. • Be sure to keep your pets on their normal diet. Any change, even for one meal, can give your pets severe indigestion and diarrhea. This is especially true for older animals that have more delicate digestive systems and nutritional requirements. It’s also important to keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes, raisins, salt and yeast dough all can be potentially toxic to companion animals. The American Kennel Club also offers these tips to keep your pets safe during summer. • Avoid scraps from the grill. While tempting to our pets, any sudden change to your pets' diet can cause stomach upset. • Avoid feeding your pets fatty and rich foods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken and baby back ribs. They can lead to indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea and ultimately pancreatitis. • Don’t give your pet raw meat or fish, because they contain bacteria or parasites that are extremely dangerous to our pets and can be fatal. • Don’t give your pets discarded bones from ribs, steak or chicken because they can cause an obstruction or lacerations of your pet’s digestive system.

Lots of places have become so urbanized that the only chance people have to see wildlife is at a zoo. But that’s not true in many parts of The Laker/Lutz News’ coverage area. If you’ve captured a photograph of an interesting bird or wild creature, we’d love to share your image with our readers.
