Matt Thon, vice president for the Aldi’s Haines City division, said the grocery chain looks at many factors, when choosing store locations. “We want the best sites that are closest to our shoppers and can support a high daily traffic volume,”Thon said. Gus Bilirakis was among those gathered to honor the veterans at the event, which included a video of various phases of the Vietnam War. It was presented by The Rotary Club of Land O’ Lakes and Acme On the Go mobile advertising. The event was held on the morning of the first full day of Swamp Fest. Medal of Honor recipient inspires local students By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

It was May 8, 1968, in La Chu, when then 19-year-old U.S. Army Specialist 4 Robert Martin Patterson singlehandedly bumrushed five machine gun bunkers, killed eight enemy soldiers and captured a weapons cache, all in the midst of a firefight in the Vietnam War. The actions that day earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor, the United States military’s highest and most prestigious designation for acts of valor. Patterson would go on to serve 26 years in the Army and reach the highest enlisted rank, Command Sergeant Major, before retiring in 1991. Post-military, he worked as a representative for the Department of Veterans Affairs for 12 years. He is one of just 70 living Medal of Honor recipients, out of total of 3,507. See HONOR, page 15A

Brewery aims to become Wesley Chapel ‘gem’ By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

If all goes according to plan, Florida Avenue Brewing will open in Wesley Chapel by next spring. It aims to become “a destination, a gem,” said Anthony Derby, the Founder and CEO of Brew Bus Brewing, located in Seminole Heights. Brew Bus Brewing and Florida Avenue Brewing are affiliated, but Florida Avenue Brewing is considered to be the company’s flagship brand. And, while operations will continue in Seminole Heights, the Wesley Chapel location will be called Florida Avenue Brewing and will be known as the company’s flagship location. The goal for the new Pasco County location is to create a place that people refer to as “a cool brewery,” Derby told those attending the North Tampa Bay Chamber economic development luncheon last week. “The project that we’re building now is going to be able to do 60,000 barrels (a year). It will be the largest locally owned

He’s excited about the possibilities. The brewery will operate in a 32,000-square-foot building, formerly known as Sports + Field, at 2029 Arrowgrass Drive. “For us, it’s kind of a blank slate. We’re going to be able to do a lot of really cool things,” Derby said, noting he wants to incorporate the best elements of what he’s seen at breweries across the United States. The company is making a sizable investment. “Before we open the FILE doors, we’ll have spent about Anthony Derby is the Founder and CEO of Brew Bus $10 million on the project,” Brewing. Derby said. That includes land acquisition, new equipment brewery in the state of Florida,” Darby said. and building improvements. Part of the brewery will have community seating, on a first-come, first-served basis — promoting a come-and-go vibe. And, a small space will be devoted to a more formal dining setting. There will be a private event space, too, accommodating about 100 seated guests, or between 150 to 200 standing, Derby said. That area will have three huge sliders that open to a private beer garden. Plus, a 3,500-square-foot outdoor beer garden is planned, too. “We’re not building any new structures,

but a lot of internal modifications need to happen,” Derby said. “We are painting the entire façade, almost a whitewash brick with a gray metal roof and then some red or burnt orange accents.” The entrance to the building will be moved. Glass is being installed, so guests will be able to see into the brewery from the outside, and also from the dining room. “We’re upgrading our water line from a 2-inch to a 4-inch,” he said, to support brewing operations.Additional power is needed, too, so an additional transformer is being added. To preserve parking, they’re paving a roadway to enable valet parking for the special events area. On the brewery side, all of the equipment will be new, including its canning line, which will be imported from Italy. It will be able to do about 250 cans a minute, compared to the company’s current canning line that does 50 cans a minute. A grain silo is planned, on the State Road 56 side, to allow the brewery to buy grain in bulk. Besides getting the site ready for the business, the company also will be hiring about 50 employees. That’s in addition to its 53 current employees in Seminole Heights, Derby said. Jobs will include such roles as a lab manager, a general manager, an assistant general manager, an event coordinator and hourly employees, such as bartenders and servers. Plans call for being open daily, with doors opening at 11 a.m. Closing times will be set, as the business dictates.

Principal raises the roof to promote literacy By Christine Holtzman choltzman@lakerlutznews.com

Students at Wiregrass Elementary School have a summer tradition. They take part, every year, in the Scholastic Book reading challenge. Two years ago, the students logged in over 43,000 minutes, and came in eighth in the state. But, Steve Williams, principal of the school at 29732 Wiregrass School Road in Wesley Chapel, knew they could do better. So, he challenged them to log in more than 50,000 minutes. If they could, he promised he would spend time reading to them from the school’s roof. The students slayed the challenge — logging more than 160,000 minutes of reading. And, the principal responded by spending a full day on the school’s roof — about 32 feet above ground — reading through a megaphone to the students below. About every half-hour or so, the principal went on Facebook Live to connect with the community and with his students. Healing from the wounds of war

The Brian Bill Foundation hosted its sixth annual Special Operations Sporting Clay Shoot at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays in Land O’ Lakes. The event raised about $20,000 for the St. Petersburg, Florida-based nonprofit foundation, which helps special operators heal from the invisible wounds of war. The foundation is named for Brian R. Bill, who was a Navy SEAL killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011. In addition to shooting clay targets, there were special capabilities demonstrations from the Pasco Sherriff’s Office SWAT Team, and a live and silent auction. New York Times best-selling author and former Navy SEAL Team SIX Commando Don Mann gave the keynote address. When Andy Warrener went to Villagio Cinemas in Carrollwood last week, he wasn’t going merely as a movie patron. He was there to see the Florida premier of “The Black String, a movie which the Odessa native co-wrote and co-created. For Warrener, the film’s Florida debut was a moment that was years in the making. “I’ve been in the screenplay format since I was 19, he said.“Screenplays became a creative outlet. A photojournalist by trade, Warrener made a transition into the film industry. His love for literature also compelled him into that line of work, he said. He moved to Los Angeles in 2002, where he lived for almost seven years. While there, he met director Brian Hanson, who introduced a screenplay idea that Warrener found intriguing. The concept dealt with a psychiatric patient who couldn’t distinguish between delusions or reality. “I’m like ‘I love it. Let’s talk more about it,’ Warrener said. “Subsequently, we had meetings and sessions, and we fleshed out the idea. Next thing you know, there was a script. However, the two screenwriters began to focus their attention elsewhere, putting the script aside. It wasn’t until 2017 that producer Richard Handley read the script, found it interesting and wrote a newer version – ultimately becoming the film’s storyline. Jonathan, the main character of “The Black String, is played by Frankie Muniz. Muniz rose to prominence as a child actor starring in the television series “Malcolm in the Middle, as well as several movies. Initially, the film premiered at the Austin Film Festival in 2018. The film also has been released on DVD,

Red Box and Google Play. Warrener, who considers himself a “horror film buff said “The Blair Witch Project and “Paranormal Activity are some of his favorites. “What makes those movies so scary, to me personally, is that it’s something that could happen to anyone, he said. He thinks “The Black String is a film that resonates with viewers. Although this was Warrener’s first screenplay to become a film, he has written nine others. He also noted that he’s teaming up with Hanson again, and this time they’ll be working on a mystery-thriller. And, Warren, who lives in Odessa again, said he’s not ruling out using Tampa Bay as the setting for future projects.

Helping children to have a Happy Birthday By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Birthday parties and children seem to go together naturally — but some children are in situations in which his or her birthday can be overlooked. That’s where Celebrate Birthdays, a nonprofit organization, comes in. It collaborates with organizations and agencies to find foster kids, other kids with certain needs or kids in clubs, to throw a birthday party for them. Belinda Leto and Celina Saunders founded Celebrate Birthdays. They go to various locations and throw a monthly birthday party, for all of the children at that particular place celebrating a birthday that month. The festivities include cake, ice cream, games, activities and presents for all the children at the party — whether they are celebrating their birthday or not, Leto said. “We want every kid to feel special, she said. “It makes them look forward to when it’s their birthday, knowing we’ll show up consistently, Saunders said.“We do not disappoint. The idea for creating Celebrate Birthdays came up two years ago, when Leto was involved in her church’s gift donation program. She said she was approached by a grand-

mother who asked whether there were local services that provided birthday gifts for children. Leto didn’t know, so she reached out to a friend who worked for Hillsborough County. She found out that the county wasn’t aware of such programs either. So, Leto and Saunders set out to fill that gap. “That was the initial spark and seed that really started the idea, Leto said. Celebrate Birthdays began serving children, and in March, it was officially recognized as a nonprofit organization. News of the program’s existence has spread

mostly through word of mouth and social media. The organization also collaborates with organizations such as the Joshua House and the Boys & Girls Club, who refer children to Celebrate Birthdays. Even a local Girl Scout troop has assisted the effort by collecting gifts and forming a bond with a “birthday buddy. “It’s kids helping kids, Leto remarked. “It doesn’t get much better than that. Children who are not part of an organization are not overlooked, she said. Maybe you’re a history teacher, with a penchant for the World War I era. Perhaps you have a fascination for the impacts that World War I had on politics, medicine, diplomacy or, even closer to home — your family’s personal history. Maybe you’re just curious about what life was like in the wider world, during the time of Downton Abbey. If any of this resonates with you, an upcoming conference at Saint Leo University could be right up your alley. The university is inviting teachers, history and political buffs, veterans and the general public to a conference that centers on the history of World War I, and subsequent peace-building efforts. The Nov. 16 event, called the Centennial of World War I & Peace 1914 to 1919 Interdisciplinary Conference, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the university’s campus in St. Leo. The event comes slightly more than a century after the original Armistice Day — Nov. 11, 1918 —which marked the official end of World War I. The conference is structured around three panels, with presentations by speakers and time allotted for questions and answers, said Marco Rimanelli, full professor of political sciences and international studies at the university. The presentations will cover: • Military and diplomacy • Medical and health care issues in the Great War • The impact of the League of Nations Rimanelli’s presentation is entitled

The Rattlesnake Festival had its biggest year since The Thomas Promise Foundation took over, despite the appearance of Tropical Storm Nestor, event organizers say. “We’ll be able to provide 100,000 lunches as a result of this years’ Rattlesnake Festival,” Joe Simmons, executive director for The Thomas Promise Foundation, said in a news release. “That’s more than the last FILE two years. Bella Tire Opens On State Road 52 By Deborah Bostock-Kelley News Special to The Laker / Lutz News Rich Nicoloff was already late for church when he spotted a couple on the side of the road with a blown tire. He knew if he stopped, he’d miss the service. But, Nicoloff also knew he wasn’t the kind of person who could just drive past. So, he pulled over, explained that he owned Bella Tires in Land O’ Lakes, and offered to open his shop on a Sunday to replace the couple’s blown tire. Nicoloff didn’t think much of that act of kindness, because he enjoys helping people as much as he enjoys managing Bella Tires, a business he opened in August, after a 27-year career as a criminal investigator for government. Following the advice of a friend who also owns a tire store, Nicoloff found a highly visible spot for his business on State Road 52, about a mile east of U.S. 41, in front of the Pilot Country subdivision. Bella Tires, which is named after Nicoloff’s daughter, offers tires and automotive services for personal and commercial vehicles and trailers. It has a drive-up port for semi-trucks for tire repair and replacement, and will soon be adding two new service bays. Nicoloff buys his tires directly from the manufacturer (purchased through a distributor), which are of better quality than tires sold at box stores and national tire retailers. If he doesn’t have the particular tire needed, he will get it — even a lawnmower tire. In addition to tire repair and replacement, other services include lift kits, leveling kits, brush guards, winches, car and truck

accessories installed, oil changes, professional detail service, vehicle diagnostics, batteries and general mechanical jobs, charging systems, air conditioning, trailer axle service, trailer wiring jobs, and diesel truck engine service. Nicoloff wants his customers to understand how and why a vehicle should be serviced, and offers a free lunch and learn for ladies on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. “I want to help educate women, so if anything is wrong with their car, they know at least a little something about it,” said Nicoloff. “I teach simple stuff, such as the importance of keeping your tires at the recommended pressure for fuel economy, and also so your vehicle handles better. I want women to know that when you get your brakes changed, always ask for your brakes back, because then you know that new brakes were put on your car.” Servicing vehicles is only part of what Nicoloff loves about owning a tire company named after his daughter. “I love meeting interesting people and being able to witness for Jesus Christ with Bible study on Thursday evenings, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. — that’s probably my favorite part of running Bella Tires,” Nicoloff says.

Three new Aldi stores will be opening in Pasco County to keep up with the area’s growing demands.

ALDI, from page 1A years, with new residential and commercial developments. Aldi’s history dates back to its first store opening in 1961. Since then, it has branched out to have a total of 1,900 locations in 36 states across the country, the retail grocer’s website says. The grocer also expects to open nearly 2,500 new stores nationwide by 2022, according to the website. Aldi operates as a grocery store with a variety of foods, including meats and fresh produce. The majority of products are exclusive brands, only found in Aldi stores. Like other Aldi locations, the Pasco stores

will be roughly 12,000 square feet. They also will have an interior layout that’s similar to other stores in the chain. Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore said he’s happy to see the new Aldi coming to his district, which will be built almost directly in front of a Costco store. Moore said he’s been hearing a desire by his constituents for an Aldi store for quite some time. “It’s great to have options for people. The more options the better. They’re in a good location. That’s for sure,” Moore said. Having more locations is good for both the company and consumers,Thon said. He said the bottom line is this:“We want to be conveniently located for our shoppers in Pasco County.”

Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Robert Martin Patterson recently visited Land O’ Lakes High School as part of an educational program to inspire middle and high school students.

HONOR, from page 1A Patterson’s heroism and military career were highlighted during a recent speaking engagement at Land O’ Lakes High School. The visit was part the school’s yearlong collaboration with the Medal of Honor Character educational program, where teachers use stories of Medal of Honor recipients to help students explore the values of courage, integrity, sacrifice, commitment, citizenship and patriotism. Patterson’s appearance at the school coincided with this year’s annual Medal of Honor Convention in Tampa, which hosted 46 Medal of Honor recipients from Oct. 22 to Oct. 26. Seven other Pasco County schools also were visited by Medal of Honor recipients through the program. They were Deer Park Elementary; Centennial, Pine View, Charles S. Rushe, and Paul R. Smith middle schools; and Hudson and Wesley Chapel high schools. Addressing a lecture hall full of students, the 71-year-old Pensacola resident inspired high schoolers to follow their dreams and strive to do their best. “The most important part of your life is your education,” Patterson said.“You can be anything that you put your mind to. You want to be a doctor? You can be a doctor. You want to be a lawyer? You can be a lawyer.” Patterson emphasized the importance of personal integrity and good decision-making, as a means to set up for future success and happiness in adulthood. “The most valuable asset is your integrity,” he said.“You are the only person that can affect your integrity. Nobody else can. Only you. Don’t ever jeopardize your integrity. Once your lose that integrity, you’ll play hell ever getting it back.” The overall theme was something he himself battled growing up in a poor family of tobacco farmers in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Patterson was known around his hometown as a troublemaker, dropping out of high school in 12th grade. “I wasn’t going to be anything in my life, according to all my teachers and everything.

Ministries – a program that relies on the study of Scripture, to help men get their lives back on track. After his two-year stay on the Dade City campus, he went on to graduate from Southeastern University and is now a minister helping to build churches. Loving Hands Ministries has two campuses. One is in Dade City and the other is in Palmetto. Marshall Walker is program director for the Dade City campus. He, too, went through the ministry’s two-year program. “The reason it’s become successful for me — and I believe for all the men — is that it’s a spiritual regeneration,” Walker said. The program requires the men to spend several hours each day studying the Bible. Walker described himself as a struggling drug addict when he moved onto the Dade City campus. Building a relationship with Jesus and getting away from worldly distractions changed him,Walker said. “Sin is fun for a season, but then after a while, it’s not fun anymore,”Walker said. Loving Hands Ministries was founded in the 1980s by Pastor Wendell Wilson and his wife, Nancy, who wanted to help men like Cabrera and Walker. Pastor Wilson had led a number of different churches throughout Florida, but after ministering to men on the street and in jails, he felt compelled to do more, said Kim Dodson, his daughter and current president of the organization. In 1982, the Wilsons opened their Bradenton home to men who were struggling with addiction or other issues — and encouraged them to redirect their lives. The Wilsons opened the first campus of Loving Hands Ministries in 1984 in Bradenton. That ministry later relocated to Palmetto. The Dade City campus opened in 1992. It now has five buildings for living quarters, a dining area, a gym and a food storage area. There’s also a recreational facility and a basketball court. And, the foundation has been laid there for a new chapel. It will provide the men more room for their spiritual work. Men come to the ministry in different ways. Some are court-ordered; others join voluntarily. Some travel from different parts of Florida. Others, from different states. Some learn about the program when they’re in the hospital, or in jail, or at a church. The two-year program keeps the men productive — with cooking, daily chores

and several hours of Bible study daily. Through such responsibilities, the men can discover their gifts, Dodson said. She put it like this:“We teach these men that their life matters and they’re created by God for his purposes, and to be used daily to serve someone else.” During the second year of the program, the men begin to learn how to minister to each other on campus. They also visit churches to share their testimonies — hoping to reach others who can benefit from the ministry. Occasionally, they get away, too, for deep sea fishing, to watch the Tampa Bay Rays, or to enjoy other outings. Those who graduate from the program, like Walker, have the chance to build careers at their respective campuses. Some have gone on to higher education. Some are now businessmen, or ministers. Loving Hands Ministries relies on individual, community and church donations, and occasional fundraisers, such as yard sales, golf tournaments and banquets. In fact, it is planning to celebrate its 35th anniversary with a banquet on Nov. 21, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Zephyrhills. David West, of Making a Difference Inc., will be the keynote speaker. Dodson noted: “All these years we’ve never charged a man or their family.” As her late father used to say:“You can’t put a price on a life.” Even though her parents have passed away, Dodson wants to continue their vision, with plans to branch out to South Florida. “Overall, we’re just so blessed with the success rate,” Dodson remarked. “In the end, it’s the change that takes place in a man’s heart that really changes him,” she said. To find out more about the organization, or the banquet, visit LovingHands.net or call Marshall Walker at (352) 523-1399.

(They said) the only thing I’d ever be in my life was nothing but a dirt farmer,” Patterson recalled. Patterson, of course, would later prove any doubters wrong with his decorated military service, where he also obtained a college degree. “The only thing blocking you from doing anything in your life, is your own mind,” Patterson said, adding, “I really do regret dropping out of high school because education is really important in your life, and I didn’t realize it until years later.” For students facing similar challenging life circumstances, Patterson recommended the military as a positive route getting on the right track. He pointed out the service instills punctuality, work ethic and personal responsibility.“Military is not a bad way to get a start in the job market,” he said. As for his distinguished act of bravery over 50 years ago, it was all a blur. “I don’t remember my actions at all,” he said.“I was young, dumb and invincible.” And, he doesn’t consider himself to be a hero, either. “I just did my job,” he said. “Somebody was going to do it, I just happened to be the one that did it.” Asked about what it means to don the Medal of Honor, a humbled Patterson said,“It’s not mine. I just keep in sacred trust. It belongs to the (soldiers) that didn’t come back.”

Tourism to keep booming in Pasco County, officials say By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

T

ourism is booming in Pasco County — which reported nearly a million visitors last year. And, the best may be yet to come, according to a presentation by county tourism officials Adam Thomas and Kolby Kucyk Gayson, during a recent Dade City Commission meeting. The county now brands itself as “Florida’s Sports Coast,” with the tagline, “Let’s Play,” in its tourism pitches. Previously, it used the slogan “Visit Pasco. Open Spaces.Vibrant Places.” It changed its brand in March to highlight the county’s growing list of recreational sports venues and outdoor activities. “We were in dire need of a rebrand as a destination,” said Gayson, communications manager for Florida’s Sports Coast. “We needed our own identity within the Florida tourism market.” Now, word is spreading about Pasco County in tourism circles regionally, nationally and even internationally, said Thomas, the county’s tourism director. “In the past six, seven months, we’ve created some strong destination awareness, so the buzz is starting to get out there about the Sports Coast,” he said. Thomas expects a noticeable uptick in activity once the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Complex of Pasco County comes online in July 2020 and begins booking events for 2021.The $44 million, 98,000-square-foot indoor space in Wesley Chapel will primarily accommodate basketball, volleyball, cheerleading, dance and gymnastics events. “We’re thinking on a global scale for that facility,”Thomas said. “It’s a one-of-a-kind facility,” he said, noting no other facility in the Southeast compares to it. “We’re offering something that’s unique that people are going to travel around the state to come experience,”Thomas said. The sports complex will ultimately benefit each surrounding community in Pasco, the tourism director explained. That’s because, he said, there’ll be opportunities for marketing partnerships with local chambers and merchant’s associations, encouraging visitors to make trips

to Dade City, Zephyrhills, New Port Richey and so on. He put it like this:“The longer (tourists) stay here, the more money they spend. The more money they spend, the greater the economy gets.” During the presentation,Thomas shared various tourism facts and figures from the past year. There were 965,000 visitors to Pasco, booking 1.23 million hotel room nights in 2018, he said. That generated roughly $57.5 million in sales tax for the county. The economic impact generated an estimated $194 in tax savings for each Pasco household,Thomas added. Additionally, tourism supports about 7,500 jobs each year, at hotels, restaurants, attractions and other businesses, he said. That represents 13 percent of all jobs in the county, he said. The tourism agency’s “bread and butter” is youth and amateur sports tourism. The next most popular categories are

leisure and adventure travelers for activities including biking, fishing, boating, ziplining and so on. He pointed out the county’s top tourist attractions annually, in order, are: • Skydive City in Zephyrhills • Giraffe Ranch in Dade City • Lift Adventure Park in Hudson • TreeHoppers Aerial Adventure Park in Dade City • Anclote Key Preserve State Park in West Pasco • Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park in West Pasco He described adventure attractions as “where the rubber meets the road in pulling the entire 742 square miles of a destination together under one umbrella to call ourselves Florida’s Sports Coast.” In addition to sports and outdoor recreation,Thomas said a greater focus is being placed on soliciting social, military, education, religious, fraternal groups, as well as business travelers, conventions and corporate retreats.

COURTESY OF RADD SPORTS

They’re doing that by leveraging meeting space that’s available at various hotels, golf clubs and local colleges. “Those are the niche marketing segments or niche influencers that we’re trying to partner with and cater to,” Thomas said. The bulk of the county’s visitors come from other areas of Florida and the Southeast region, followed by the Northeast and Midwest, he said. But, he noted, there’s a growing number of international tourists. They made up 9% of all travelers to the area in 2018. Pasco’s top international market is Canada,Thomas said. They mainly visit between January and April and their primary interests lie in outdoor activities, particularly cycling. Meanwhile, as tourism grows,Thomas’ department is growing, too. The agency has six staff members, including Thomas, but also is hiring a corporate tourism sales manager and a digital media producer, he said.

PET PAWS HUMANE SOCIETY RECEIVES $11,257

During the month of September, the Humane Society of Pasco County was the featured charity at the Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office. A combined total of $11,257 was collected by the staff at all the tax collector office locations. The Humane Society of Pasco is a 100% no-kill shelter, run solely by volunteers and community donations. “Thank you so very much for making the Humane Society of Pasco your Charity of the Month,” commented Suellen Szeskyski, president of the Society’s board of directors, in a release. “The amount donated was way beyond our expectations. We are trying hard to get a new shelter building before the one we have completely falls apart and this will really help,” she added. For information about the charity programs and other services, visit PascoTaxes.com, or call Greg Giordano, assistant tax collector/communications & special projects, at (727) 847-8179. For information regarding the Humane Society, visit HumaneSocietyofPasco.org, or call Christine DePaolo, shelter director, at (727) 856-6762.

GRANT TO HELP WOMEN AND YOUTH

Baz needs some TLC Baz is a middle-aged boy that arrived at the shelter a little over a week ago after being left behind in a home. At 21 pounds, he is in need of a home, a diet plan and exercise to help reduce his weight, and ensure a long and healthy life going forward. Baz currently resides in the Feline Freedom room.

The nonprofit Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida announced a $13,000 grant to the National Wild Turkey Federation – Gator Gobblers, to introduce more women and youth to hunting. In addition to getting participants outside at the Little Orange Creek Preserve in Hawthorne, the project will include education on gun safety and land management for game species. Up to 100 new hunters will learn all aspects of hunting and have a chance to harvest their first animal in a safe environment. The overall goal of the grant is for new audiences to gain an appreciation for the connection between well-managed wildlife habitat, game species and conservation efforts. Grant funding came from the “Wildlife Foundation of Florida” license plate, which includes an image of a deer. From each purchase, $25 supports protection and management of lands open to public hunting, hunting safety programs, and training in archery and other shooting sports for women and men of all ages and backgrounds.

PETSNIP OPENS NEW LOCATION

TLC PetSnip will open its fourth location in early 2020. It has partnered with Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) to bring high-quality, high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter services to Pasco County. TLC PetSnip is expected to open on Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes, with PCAS as its neighbor. According to its website,TLC’s founder Terry Sandlak and her late mother, LaVerne Peyton, had a dream to start up a

high-quality facility that supplied affordable pet care that owners could trust. The nonprofit was created out of the concern of pet overpopulation in the community. Sandlak discovered that the main reason people do not spay/neuter their pets is due to the high cost or the lack of availability to the services. TLC PetSnip Inc., was formed in 2012.

FOUNDATION CELEBRATES 25 YEARS

The nonprofit Fish & Wildlife Foundation of Florida is celebrating its 25th birthday, this fall. Since its founding, the foundation has raised and donated nearly $40 million to conserve Florida’s best lands, waters and wildlife, working closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and many other partners. Florida panthers, manatees, black bears, turkeys, wood storks and red snapper are just a few of the species it has helped conserve. And, with The Nature Conservancy, the foundation invested $120,000 this year into restoring critical manatee freshwater springs habitat. One of the foundation’s priorities is increasing public access to and enjoyment of traditional outdoor pastimes, such as birding, fishing, boating, hunting, archery and more. And, many of its outdoor programs benefit returning veterans, women and at-risk youth. The foundation also responds to emergencies, whether it’s hurricane disaster relief for FWC employees, identifying technologies for mitigating red tide or helping fund rescue of corals. “For 25 years, we’ve worked to conserve nature and our outdoor heritage, thanks to help from the public and many partners,” said foundation president and CEO Andrew Walker, in a release.

GRANT SUPPORTS BIRDS AND HABITAT

Duke Energy Foundation’s $27, 340 grant will enable West Pasco Audubon to support bird and habitat conservation through the construction of a bird blind in Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park. The new bird blind will be constructed over Grassy Lake, which will allow for optimal unobstructed viewing and monitoring of several threatened species, including roseate spoonbills, wood stork, sandhill cranes, little blue herons, tricolored herons and southeastern American kestrels. Data gathered from the bird blind will be shared with land managers, and may be used to inform decision-making for the lake. Once built, Pasco County Parks and Recreation will maintain the bird blind. The blind also will be available to the general public using the park, Pasco County’s Parks and Recreation programs, school students, those who visit the park to learn about ecosystems, and local nature photographers.

Meredith likes to people-watch Sweet little Meredith is very shy but has done some exploring. She loves to look out windows and take advantage of the nearest cat stand to start a people-watching habit. Meredith arrived over two weeks ago as a stray and is about 2 years old. She has attended playgroups before and was a bit nervous with larger crowds of pups.
