She’s graced stages in more than 30 countries, has danced many classic ballet roles and has offered private coaching and workshops. But last week, Russian ballerina Zhanna Golubenko was in Lutz, posing for photos and autographing posters at Dance Gear, Etc., 1707 Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz. Golubenko has been traveling in recent months to cities throughout the Southeastern United States, sharing her passion for ballet and helping to promote upcoming performances of Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker. That production will be performed in numerous cities, including St. Petersburg. Besides letting people know about the upcoming show, she’s also putting the word out about audition opportunities, said Carolyn Jackson, owner of Dance Gear, Etc. Jackson was pleased to host the ballerina’s visit. “It was just a fabulous opportunity for the community. Everybody loves The Nutcracker,” Jackson said. Golubenko, who was dressed in costume, said she began dancing when she was 6.That was two decades ago. Retail is coming to Ballantrae Village By Kathy Steele

New retail is headed to State Road 54 in Land Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Lakes, as Dunphy Properties prepares to start construction on the first shops at Ballantrae Village. A groundbreaking is expected in January for a Circle K, a Dairy Queen, a Dunkinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Donuts and a Taco Bell on outparcels on the northeast corner of State Road 54 and Ballantrae Boulevard, according to a news release from Dunphy Properties. An additional four parcels are on the market, and a 13,200-square-foot building also is planned. Tenants have not been signed as yet. New access is planned to get into and out of the shopping plaza. Plans for retail at the master-planned community of Ballantrae Village has been slow in developing largely due to the economic downturn in 2007 and a slow recovery. But growth is gathering steam, es-

Moore said he listened to the criticisms, and requested county staff members to tweak the ordinance. For instance, owners won’t have to worry about code enforcement inspectors defining buildings that had too much peeling paint. “It’s very hard to measure that so we took it off,” he said. Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco supported the ordinance as a tool to raze abandoned buildings that are havens for criminal activities. Nearly 600 service calls have been answered so far this year around the intersection of U.S. 19 and State Road 52 where there is an empty retail store, fast-food restaurant and a boarded up bank building. And, the Sheriff’s Office has responded to more than 200 calls from an area near U.S. 19 and Alternate U.S. 19, near a closed medical clinic, according to the law enforcement agency’s data. For billing adjustments, Schrader preferred a 50,000-gallon a month threshold, based on data and an initial recommendation from county staff members. An average for most customers is about 6,000 gallons a month. Commissioners were told that during the hottest months, customers with irrigation systems would typically use 20,000 to 30,000 gallons a month, and sometimes more. Schrader said the county could expect a lot of complaints based on the 20,000-gallon threshold, and might need to adjust the number. “I think it’s easier to go back down than to go back up,” he said. Bruce Kennedy, assistant county administrator for utilities, also issued an apology to Pasco water customers. “We know the way we handled these billing issues has not reflected our commitment to good customer service,” he said. “Our policies and procedures certainly need revising.They need repair.”

But under the new ordinance, her reduced charges would be about $125, according to county calculations. That’s a 94 percent reduction. Gritmon believes the policy is unfair. From her seat in the audience, she told commissioners that even under that policy, she’s being billed “for water I did not use.” She believes it would be fair to charge her just under $41, which is on average what the county has billed her monthly over the past year. Previously county officials said they had no way under current regulations to remedy bills for Gritmon or others in similar situations. Only billing errors and verifiable leaks could prompt billing adjustments. County officials cited the audit, which found water meters were recording correct-

She created a Facebook page for “Land O’ Lakes Beautification Efforts”, a grassroots campaign that has garnered about 570 signatures on a petition to clean up U.S. 41. Property values can drop because of blighted buildings, she said. “It’s been depressing to watch the complete degradation of (U.S.) 41 specifically. We desperately want this enforced on U.S. 41.”

t 128 feet tall and 26 feet around, a bald cypress tree in Pasco County is the eighth tallest of its kind in Florida. And, it will always be protected in the Upper Pithlachascotee River Preserve, 1 mile east of the Suncoast Parkway. The land was purchased from the proceeds of the Penny for Pasco 1-cent sales tax approved by Pasco County voters. That is good news for future generations. Because it only took 37 years for the Cummer Sons Cypress Company to log the centuries-old cypress trees for the company’s logging operations. Loggers like Jacob Cummer, who harvested much of the old-growth cypress in east and central Pasco County, probably skipped over this tree because of a large scar on its western side, presumably from a lightning strike. Cummer had bought land for timber in Virginia, North Carolina, and Louisiana. In 1922, the Cummer operation acquired a 100-acre site in Lacoochee to construct the largest sawmill and box factory in the South. A railroad was built in the Green Swamp to transport cypress trees from land that totaled more than 50 square miles in east Pasco and west Polk Counties. Many of the cypress trees were cut with an ax before the chainsaw was invented. Using a sophisticated network of levers and racks, cypress logs as large as 6 feet in diameter were lifted out of the swamps and, at one point, produced more than 100,000 citrus crates each day. With 700 employees and the largest payroll in Pasco County, coupons could be used as part of workers’ paychecks in the prospering downtown of Lacoochee. In the years after the Cummer sawmills opened, a two-story, 30-room hotel was built.

Land O’ Lakes watercolorist Bob McAnespie doesn’t like to refer to himself as an artist. He calls himself a painter. In his view, an artist is to a painter, what a chef is to a cook. The Land O’ Lakes man teaches a watercolor class for beginners at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex. The three-hour sessions are held on Thursdays and cost $10 each. Supplies for the class cost about $50. McAnespie encourages anyone who is interested in creating watercolor paintings to give it a try. “The only way you can fail in watercolor is if you quit. Pasco’s tourism sets new record

Pasco County has posted its best year in tourism, according to county officials. “This last year has been one for the record books,” Ed Caum Tourism Manager for VisitPasco, said in a news release. “We surpassed our prediction of 10 percent growth and are up 17 percent over last years collections,” he said. Specifically, Pasco County posted $968,263 in Tourist Tax collections, in the period between October 2014 and the end of September 2015. Pasco’s results are in keeping with record numbers of tourists visiting Florida. That trend is expected to continue, according to VisitFlorida, which is predicting that tourism and the hospitality industries will continue to experience growth. Counties surrounding Pasco County also have experienced record years in Tourist Tax collection. “We have expanded our marketing reach in the last two years to reach out to international travelers, as well as North America,” Caum explained. “Last year we focused on Germany and this year we will be reaching out to the United Kingdom and into South America to the Spanish speaking countries.” VisitFlorida trends show that Florida is expected to attract tourists from the emerging markets of Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina and Mexico. The impact of tourism on Pasco County is captured in a report from the U.S. Travel Association: • Travel spending in Pasco was nearly $466 million, generated from more than

500,000 visitors • Travel created nearly 6,000 full-time employees, with an annual payroll in Pasco County of $106.2 million • Local sales tax generated from those visitors totaled more than $14.9 million “Tourism continues to be an economic engine in Pasco County,” Caum said. Caum offered additional details at an breakfast meeting of the Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce. Caum also talked about bright prospects for a greater number of tourists, as attractions such as Tampa Premium Outlets and Florida Hospital Center Ice open in Wesley Chapel, and people take advantage of the newly opened Tree Hoppers in Dade City and Sunwest Park in Hudson. The hospitality industry is gearing up for increased tourism. Pasco County currently has 3,556 hotel rooms, according to Caum. He expects Pasco’s hotel stock to increase by 75 beds a year for the next five years. Besides the growth generated by new attractions, Pasco has long been a magnet for skydivers and for visitors to the county’s nudist resorts, which attract visitors from throughout Florida and from around the globe. Caum said healthy tourism figures bode well for people who work directly in the hospitality industry, as well as for all Pasco business owners and residents. The taxes paid by tourists reduce the tax burden for Florida residents, tourism provides jobs, and the amenities that are created to attract visitors, Caum said, can be enjoyed year-round by local residents.

Rack Room Shoes, for instance, will give shoppers a chance to win a $500 gift card and other giveaways, including coupon books with discounts, according to a news release from the shoe company. The 441,000-square-foot mall is designed with a “Key West” vibe, with airy pastel colors, a multitude of palm trees, covered walkways and water features. The centerpiece is a clear blue lagoon outside the Market Hall, which houses customers services, the food court and a lounge where people can sit and watch television. A bridge crosses the lagoon, which is surrounded by a deck with benches and bistro chairs. A fire pit and Adirondack chairs are nearby. “I think it will be a feature where people will want to take their picture by,” Nance said. Traffic in and out of the mall is expected to be heavy but Nance said talks have been ongoing for months with Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Typically, opening days at malls see parking lots turn over four or five times. “It’s going to be a constant ebb and flow throughout the day,” Nance predicted. The mall will offer valet parking on a trial basis. If successful, Nance anticipates the service will become permanent. On opening weekend, 12 extra duty law enforcement officers, paid for by the mall, will be stationed at mall entrances as well as inside the mall, Pasco County Sheriff’s spokesman Kevin Doll said. The officers will include two supervisors. If more help is needed, Doll said the sheriff’s citizen patrol group could be tapped to help with traffic. “We’ve handled big events in the past,” he said.“Hopefully this will go smoothly.”

Outlet mall openings are special events wherever they happen, said Linda Humphers, editor in chief of Value Retail News/International Council of Shopping Centers. There are only about 100 outlet malls or so in the nation. In the central Florida area, Tampa Premium Outlets is situated between outlet malls in Orlando and New Ellenton. “That’s part of the mystique of them,” Humphers said. “You go there. You stay longer and spend more. It’s not like going to a mall and getting something you need.” Outlet mall developers typically look for locations with easy access, high visibility, lots of rooftops and a solid tourism base, Humphers said. Pasco scores on all counts for Tampa Premium Outlets, which is off State Road 56 and the Interstate 75 interchange. And the county recently released a report showing a record number of tourist visitors and revenues in the past year. Marketing for the Tampa Premium Outlets extends into the Tampa Bay region, but in future could spread a wider net, Nance said. “We’ll definitely be looking at that when we get further along in our marketing plan,” she said. Pasco’s future is set on a course for more retail and rooftops as developers saturate commercial corridors such as State Road 54 and State Road 56. New shops are coming to property northeast of the Shoppes at Wiregrass.The Florida Center Ice sports complex is expected to open in 2016. Cypress Creek Town Center is anticipating openings for Chick Fil A, Culver’s and Cheddar Café.And the town center’s representatives recently met with county planners to discuss construction of a retail building, parking space and a boat storage area. Speculation is that sporting goods retailer, Cabelas, is on the way to Wesley Chapel, too. And there is a lot of buzz swirling around Tampa Premium Outlets’ opening day, Humphers said. “Retail begets retail,” she said.

Gallagher said dancing helps her to convey her emotions, and she enjoys stepping into the role of a character. Dancing, she said,“allows me to transfer into somebody else for a just a little bit of time.”

PET PEACE OF MIND

Schneider deals with issues related to pets outside the bereavement sessions. Gulfside Hospice received a grant for the Pet Peace of Mind program from Banfield Trust, which enables them to assist Hospice patients and their pets. That assistance might include providing food, boarding assistance or basic veterinary care. It’s not unusual for patients to be concerned about the welfare of their pets, Schneider said, and the Pet Peace of Mind

Polom made that tough decision, and a month later she still felt guilty. “I can’t seem to forgive myself,” she admitted.“She was like my little partner.” One thing that sticks in her mind is how Annie seemed to be doing better right at the end of her life. It’s a common occurrence, even with humans, for the sick to experience a rally of sorts even as their condition worsens. Polom experienced the same thing with her father when he passed away. But seeing Annie behave normally, even for a short time, makes her question if she did the right thing.And after losing her husband to cancer a decade ago, letting Annie go has left her alone. The parallels between human and pet loss aren’t unique to Polom’s situation. According to Schneider, the grief and loss can be similar, so helping those in mourning can be similar as well. “A lot of what we do in the pet group is what we do with families, because we live in a society that really doesn’t educate, and doesn’t really like to talk about death and dying,” she said. In the session, Schneider, a licensed clinical social worker, and Michael Merritt, a chaplain, offer advice and comfort. But they also do a lot of listening, from stories about Annie’s loving personality, to the guilt and grief Polom feels about losing her closest companion. Just knowing that those feelings aren’t unusual, and being able to share their story can be extremely beneficial to those who have lost a pet. Especially when they know they’re talking to people who share that love of animals, like Schneider and Merritt, and understand the degree of closeness that owners feel. Polom said attending the group was beneficial for her. “I think it’s part of the journey. I think it’s a good part for me,” Polom said. “It makes me feel normal, like I’m in my element.”

program helps alleviate those concerns. In less than two years they’ve cared for more than 80 animals, and found new homes for more than a dozen. Knowing that Hospice will be there to assist them with anything from grooming to dog-walking to providing food and kitty litter lifts a burden from patients, and provides comfort with the knowledge that someone will step in and help care for a pet if and when an owner cannot do so anymore. Again, Schneider notes the similarities in concern for pet welfare, and that of human family members. “One of the great things about the Pet Peace of Mind program is that they want us to come up with an individual plan of care for the pet, just like we do for our patients,” she said. Just like with humans, consistency of care is considered important. If a pet sees a certain veterinarian, efforts are made to ensure that relationship continues. The pet loss support group is free, but they do accept donations to keep Pet Peace of Mind funded and active. Whether it’s reading a pet-related poem, offering thoughts as a fellow animal-lover, or just listening to a grieving owner’s stories, Schneider wants the pet loss support group to be available for anyone in the area who needs to know that their feelings are normal, their sense of loss is valid, and they’re not alone in forging special relationships with their pets. “It’s really to bring peace of mind and decrease their own emotional and spiritual pain and suffering,” Schneider said. All of his starters play at the club level, and many athletes on the junior varsity team participate, too. That extra coaching, experience and playing opportunity helps keep the high school team operating at a high level, Koleduk said. While Sunlake has run into some talented teams at the state level, junior Sebastian Restrepo doesn’t mince words when explaining why they haven’t advanced to the state finals. “We needed a lot more heart,” he said of last year’s semi-finals performance. “The other team wanted it more than us at one point.” This year, he sees a team that’s more focused, works well together and has the

While Florida lacks the glorious display of colorful fall leaves other parts of the country enjoy, there is one clear sign that fall is in the air here. Pumpkin patches are popping up at locations all over northern Hillsborough,

Central Pasco and East Pasco counties. There’s a patch near Seal Swim School in Lutz, and there was one at the San Antonio Rattlesnake Festival & Run in San Antonio, and this pumpkin patch, at Harvester United Methodist Church in Land O’ Lakes, featured some 2,000 of the orange orbs.

Six year-old, Reno Horne of Land O’ Lakes was happy about his find in the pumpkin patch at the Harvester United Methodist Church. Reno plans to transform his pumpkin into a Jack o’ lantern for Halloween. He and his mom, Leslie Horne and Reno’s sisters, 4year-old Brighton, and 11-year-old Ayla, checked out the patch for additional pumpkins of various sizes to use for decorations.

Charlie and Eddie are 4-pound Chihuahuas and are sweet as can be. We rescued both of them — Charlie four years ago, and Eddie two years ago. Eddie was afraid of everything, and cried at every little noise and movement we made. It took us a year to work with him, and now he is a really happy dog that loves to lie in the sun and play with Charlie. They travel everywhere with us, even to Europe every year. We can't imagine being without the boys, and adopting them was the best decision ever for our family. Charlie’s and Eddie’s proud owners are Connie and Doug Goserud.

CareerSource Pasco Hernando received an $80,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, according to a news release from Career Source. The funds are from a statewide Sector Partnership National Emergency Grant of nearly $7 million that is targeted at long-term unemployed individuals in health care and manufacturing. The funds will help transition 25 individuals who have been unemployed for longer than 20 weeks. Classroom instruction in manufacturing skills will be offered that will lead to an industry certification. Participants will then be eligible for short-term on-the-job training with a local manufacturer. First enrollments will be in February/March 2016.
