Pasco is redrawing school boundaries By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Turnout was light for a public workshop regarding school boundaries held last week at Wiregrass Ranch High School. Thousands of students will be affected by the proposed changes, but the vast majority of changes relate to Cypress Creek Middle School, which is set to open in the

fall of 2020. The school district initially had planned to open both a high school and a middle school on the campus at 8701 Old Pasco Road. But, the district was short on funding, so initially the high school buildings were used to house students in grades six through 12. When the new middle school opens

next fall, students in grades six through eight will shift to the new building. But, boundary changes are needed to fill up remaining capacity at both the middle school and the high school. The proposed changes primarily affect the Seven Oaks neighborhood, said Chris Williams, director of planning for Pasco See BOUNDARIES, page 15A

The Land O’Lakes Branch Library launched a new monthly program that aims to encourage kids to use their imaginations to create their own art, based on book illustrations. The Copycat Illustrators program is the brainchild of Karen Allen, the library’s youth services librarian, and is geared toward kindergarteners through fifth-graders. The group will meet each month on early school release days, at 3 p.m. A new book will be selected each month, inspiring kids to interpret the drawings in their own way, by using the crafting materials on hand. Registration is not required. To find out more, call (813) 929-1214. On the surface, it will appear like any typical fall festival. Vendors will line up, selling a wide array of items — and visitors to the Autumn Day at the Old Lutz School, 18819 U.S. 41 in Lutz, will be able to stock up on all sorts of stuff. There will be handmade soaps and scrubs. Salsas, jams and jellies.Wreaths.Terra cotta pots. Toys. Plants. Wooden signs and more. The event will be on Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Besides having the chance to check out scores of vendors, guests also can attend a free gardening workshop at 9:30 a.m. Lynn Barber, from the University of Florida/IFAS-Hillsborough County Extension, will conduct the gardening workshop, which will focus on using high-color, low-maintenance and drought-tolerant plants in your home landscape. On top of all that, people can tour the historic school building. In a way, that’s what the event is all about — a method to raise money for the upkeep and preservation of a building that has played an important role in the life of

Ensor is a member of the Citizens for the Old Lutz School Building, a group formed in 1978 to preserve the building’s past and assure its future. The group organizes an Autumn Market Day and a Spring Market Day each year, to raise money, she said. The fundraisers are used to help make repairs, she said, and keep the school open

for community events. Upcoming repairs will include new front doors for the schoolhouse and treating for termites, she said. “They’re repairing and rebuilding the existing windows. We can only do a few at a time because they’re really expensive,” Ensor said. “We’re only doing three windows now. We’re going to get some new front doors See SCHOOL, page 15A

Long-term planning efforts continue for Pasco’s roads By Brian Fernandes

MPO public workshops

bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

WHERE/WHEN: New Port Richey Public Library, 5939 Main St., in New Port Richey (Nov. 5 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.); Pasco County Historic Courthouse, 37918 Meridian Avenue in Dade City (Nov. 6 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.); The Shops at Wiregrass, 28211 Paseo Drive in Wesley Chapel (day/time to be announced). COST: Free DETAILS: The Pasco County Metropolitan Planning Organization will unveil and explain to guests its roadway projections for 2025 to 2045. INFO: Visit MobilityPasco.com.

Pasco County’s Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) will adopt a new plan, in December, pushing forward its long-term agenda for the county’s road system. Its 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan gives an overview of what roadway modifications could be made within a 20-year span. Wally Blain of Tindale Oliver and Kasey Cursey of AECOM, consultants who work alongside the county’s MPO, explained some highlights of the 2045 plan at a luncheon hosted by the Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce, on Oct. 8. Some key projects include: • Widening State Road 52 to six lanes, from the Suncoast Parkway to U.S. 41 • Widening State Road 52 to four lanes from U.S. 41 to Old Pasco Road • Widening U.S. 41 to four lanes, from its intersection with State Road 52, heading south to Connerton Boulevard • Extending Ridge Road, from Moon Lake Road to the Suncoast Parkway • Constructing a new State Road 52 alignment, east of Interstate 75, to connect with Clinton Avenue Improvements on State Road 54 also are planned, but how to proceed has not yet been determined. “We know that State Road 54 is a huge priority for the county,” Blain said.“There’s been much discussion about what would be the preferred solution or strategy for State Road 54.” The map indicates that the Vision 54/56 plan will be evaluated for potential transit improvements, overpasses, elevated lanes and alternative intersection designs. “[The] county and DOT (Department of Transportation) are working on the coordination of traffic signals on State Road 54,” Blain noted. However, there are no plans to widen State Roads 54 and 56 respectively, from U.S. 41 to U.S. 301, according to the map.

BRIAN FERNANDES

While State Road 54 continues to be an ever-congested corridor, especially at the intersection with U.S. 41, the roadway may see new improvements in Pasco County’s 2045 Long Range Transportation Plan.

Blain said: ”What we’re doing in the plan is we’re setting aside the money to do the project, and as those studies are completed, implementation can begin to happen right away.” Currently, there is $395 million set aside for Vision 54/56 studies and improvements. The long-range plan also proposes revamping the county’s public transportation system. That includes adding Sunday services, increasing the frequency for bus pickups and drop offs, and extending services to as late as 11:30 p.m. “The MPO is a federally funded and mandated organization. It’s required in large metropolitan areas to do the transportation planning – where will people live and where will jobs exist, according to our crystal ball, by the year 2045,” Blain said. Based on those projections, schematics of Pasco County were drawn showing potential road connections and widenings, as well as improvements to the transit system, he said. Pasco County residents were surveyed in

2018 to get feedback on the MPO’s proposed plans. About 1,600 surveys were received. Needs were identified, and then, he said, “we look at our revenues and what can we afford based on our expected revenue streams.” Another survey was conducted for additional public feedback over the summer, to consider practical suggestions that could be implemented in the MPO’s cost-affordable plan. While Pasco County’s transportation system receives appropriations from the federal and state levels, it also collects revenue from the county’s Penny for Pasco surtax. The program raises funds through a onepenny surcharge for every dollar of sales tax collected by the county. Of the portion allocated to the county, 18% goes toward transportation. The 2045 long-range plan calls for the renewal of the Penny for Pasco program after 2024, as it currently stands.

Transportation revenues collected from federal, state and county levels are projected to exceed $7 billion from 2025 to 2045, Blain said. Every five years, the Long Range Transportation Plan is reevaluated for potential modifications. The 2045 plan would see slight allocation increases to specific projects in contrast to the 2040 plan. Here are some specifics: • Road capacity would receive 69%, compared to 64% • Sidewalks and bicycle facilities would receive 3%, compared to 1% • Technology and congestion management also would receive 3%, compared to 1% • Roadway maintenance would receive 15%, compared to 9% But, Blain also noted that transit projects would see a decline from 25% to 10%. That decrease is due to the MPO’s assumption that there will not be any new local taxes or revenues generated toward transportation, Blain added. The public is encouraged to engage in a 30-day comment period, starting on Nov. 1. For more information or to give comment feedback, please visit MobilityPasco.com.

Changes could lead to ‘employment village’ By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco County Commission has approved a rezoning on 130 acres on the southwest corner of State Road 52, about 70 feet west of Bellamy Brothers Boulevard, to allow 1 million square feet of light industrial and 200,000 square feet of support commercial. Commissioners approved the request as part of their consent agenda, which means it was recommended for approval by the Planning Commission and county planners, and there was no public opposition. The application for the request was filed by 3KS Family Limited Partnership. The site is currently unimproved and is being used for agricultural activities.

County staff has initiated a comprehensive plan amendment to allow multiple master-planned unit developments on the acreage, rather than a single master-planned unit development, and to make some additional changes. Development on the site will be limited to light industrial or a target primary business, as identified by Enterprise Florida as a qualified target industry for the tax refund program, or a business that is identified by the Pasco Economic Development Council Inc., on the economic development target industry list. Access to the site will be off State Road 52, according to county documents. The project is currently being evaluated by the Pasco Economic Development Council for the Pasco Ready Site Program.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Coach Ryan Prior is hosting a grand opening celebration of the Pryor Baseball Farm — an event where friends, family, leagues and members of the media can visit the outdoor training farm. The baseball school is intended to be a place where young athletes can bridge the skill gap to pursue their dreams of reaching high levels within baseball and softball. The grand opening is set for Oct. 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., according to a news release about the celebration. Pryor is the former varsity assistant coach at Wiregrass Ranch High School and a varsity assistant at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School. Both programs enjoyed considerable success during his work there. A number of Pryor’s former players are now playing on Major League teams.

The baseball school is situated on a 5acre-plus site, off Old Pasco Road and Hadlock Drive, at 8931 Elkmont Lane in Wesley Chapel. The facility, called the “Farm” for short, includes: • Hitting stables with six batting cages and machines • Pitching pens with five bullpens • The Julie Parker drill field • Golf-style batting Tee ranges (over pond) • Full video evaluations • Outfield range • Long-toss throwing lanes, up to 300 feet • Practice drill fields For more information about the event, or the facility, call Coach Ryan Pryor at (813) 992-1030, or email pryorbaseballfarm@gmail.com.

STUDY ON ER MANUALS

Oak Hill Hospital’s Dr. Wayne Simmons, first-year anesthesiology resident, and Dr. Jeffrey Huang, program director of the hospital’s anesthesiology residency, published a peer review manuscript entitled,“Operating Room Emergency Manuals Improve Patient Safety:A Systematic Review.” The aim of the review was to highlight the latest movements surrounding emergency manual implementation nationally and abroad within perioperative medicine, with a focus on studies linking the emergency manuals to patient safety. An emergency manual is a tool made to command all resources at hand in order to provide an anesthesia delivery plan, in conjunction with members of the anesthesia care team and operating room personnel in

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Florida Department of Health in Pasco County encourages all women to receive regular screenings to promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Women should talk to their health care provider about their individual risk factors and the frequency of receiving mammograms, as well as complete any recommended mammography screenings. Women can help lower their risk by: • Maintaining a healthy weight • Being physically active • Limiting or avoiding alcohol • Choosing to breast-feed • Quitting smoking and/or vaping The Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides access to the screenings doctors recommend. The screenings are free or low-cost for those who meet the program eligibility requirements. For information, call the Department of Health-Pasco at (727) 619-0369.

A play with a purpose By Mary Rathman mrathman@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Fire Rescue is hoping to raise awareness on fall prevention for seniors, with a unique, free theater event. The award-winning play, “Denying Gravity,” will be presented on Oct. 20 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Heritage Springs Clubhouse, 11345 Robert Trent Jones Parkway in Trinity. Performed by SAGES Theater, the play follows a minor misstep that interrupts a retiree’s busy life and she’s fallen down a rabbit hole into the realm of the unexpected.

The comedy/drama also allows audience members to engage with the actors on stage dealing with issues faced by older Americans. Actual EMTs from Fire Rescue will be cast in cameo roles. Falls are the leading cause of injury or death for seniors, and the play hopes to send a strong message that falls can be prevented. Doors will open at 1 p.m., to give seniors time to obtain information about fall prevention services and products. For information, visit SagesTheater.org, or call (727) 536-7076.

HELP THE NICHOLS FAMILY #TEAMNICHOLS & Their 5-Year-Old Daughter, Baylor The Nichols family needs your help. Dad, Donnie Nichols, is a Brooksville firefighter, and Mom, Carly Nichols, is a Hernando County middle school teacher. This local couple has three beautiful daughters. In April, the Nichols received the worst news any parent can hear — their middle daughter, 5year-old Baylor, has an inoperable brain tumor and the diagnosis is terminal. In the past five months, this tiny dancer has been through six weeks of radiation, two surgeries and is participating in a clinical trial at Children's National Hospital in Washington, DC. All this has helped to improve Baylor’s quality of life; however, as her neurosurgeon said from the beginning, the family only has a year left with her; two years would be a rare, best-case scenario. Baylor’s grandparents, Dean Rusk and Cheryl Hill, also live in Brooksville, and are working to raise money to help the family through this devastating blow, and to make the most out of every moment they have together.

Baylor’s Disease Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma is the worst brain cancer in existence, with most victims being children. Sadly, DIPG ultimately steals every life it walks into, with a median survival of just 9 months after diagnosis. In the last 50 years, 200,000 children and adults have died from this tumor, and every year 4,000 new cases are diagnosed. DIPG is nearly impossible to treat. It is located in the brainstem, which is the lower part of the brain where it meets the spinal cord. It cannot be surgically removed because it is not one solid lump, and it grows in such a vital place in the brain. The tumor wraps itself into healthy tissue, and has several tiny "branches" that quite literally do what they want. Removal of this tumor would result in unavoidable removal of healthy tissue, which would cause severe brain damage and even death. www.LakerLutzNews.com

BLEACHERS CLOSED, TEMPORARILY

Pasco County Schools engaged a structural engineer to conduct safety inspections of seven high school concrete stadiums. Two of those schools require temporary closure of bleachers. Locally, Pasco High School visitors’ side bleachers will be closed for maintenance for the rest of the football season, and likely through the end of the school year. The closure is not expected to affect high school football, cross-country, soccer, track and field, or middle school events at the stadium. The home bleachers at Pasco High will accommodate both home and visiting team fans.

BOUNDARIES, from page 1A County Schools. Specifically, the school district is proposing that 613 students now zoned to Wiregrass Ranch High School be shifted to Cypress Creek High School, and seven students zoned to Pasco High School be rezoned to Cypress Creek High School. If that’s approved, the estimated enrollment at Cypress Creek High School would be 2,080, in a school which has a permanent capacity of 2,090. After the proposed shift, Wiregrass Ranch would have an enrollment of 1,606 students, in a school with a permanent capacity of 1,633. Pasco High would have an enrollment of 1,602, in a school with a permanent capacity of 1,491. The proposed boundary changes also call for shifting over to Cypress Creek Middle, an estimated 446 students now zoned to John Long Middle and five students now zoned to Pasco Middle. If those changes are approved, Cypress Creek Middle would have an estimated 1,554 students, in a school with a permanent capacity of 1,600. John Long Middle would have 1,167 students, in a school with a permanent capacity of 1,327. Pasco Middle would have 918 students, in a school with a permanent capacity of 875. Under the proposal, seven students living along State Road 52, at the north end of Old Pasco Road, would be reassigned from Pasco High to Cypress Creek High. That shift is being proposed because where they live is a straight shot to Cypress Creek High, Williams said. “We felt that made sense.” The district also is proposing to shift an attendance area with 17 students in San Antonio Elementary over to Quail Hollow Elementary. “These kids currently go to San Antonio Elementary, Pasco Middle and Pasco High. So, now they’re going to go to Quail Hollow Elementary, Cypress Creek Middle and Cypress Creek High,”Williams said. In another proposed change, an attendance area with 143 students now zoned to Wesley Chapel High would be reassigned to Zephyrhills High. That would bring Zephyrhills High’s enrollment to 1,780, at a school with a permanent capacity of 2,004. It would bring Wesley Chapel High’s enrollment to 1,438, at a school with a permanent capacity of 1,506. Williams said the change addresses a previous boundary shift. “We rezoned some kids several years ago out of Wiregrass and John Long into Wesley Chapel and Weightman. We kind of shifted these kids over to Stewart Middle, but there wasn’t room at Zephyrhills, so they went to Wesley Chapel. “The bulk of these kids go to Chester Taylor Elementary, then they go to Stewart and then they go to Wesley Chapel,” Williams said. The planning director also noted that “Wesley Chapel has all of this growth coming from Epperson Ranch. “So, we think it makes sense to fix the

SCHOOL, from page 1A

feeder pattern. Elementary and middle doesn’t change: They’ll still go to Chester Taylor and Stewart Middle. But, now they’ll go to Zephyrhills (High),”Williams said. Zephyrhills High has room because the district just built a new classroom wing there. As of last week, Williams had not received any feedback on the proposed shift affecting Zephyrhills High. Overall, he has received about three dozen comment cards regarding the proposed boundary shifts changes — the vast majority coming from the Seven Oaks neighborhood. As is often the case, those commenting said they’d bought their home in a specific neighborhood because of the school their child would attend, or they objected to the change because the new school is farther away from their home than their current school. When the district drew up the original boundaries for Cypress Creek Middle High, it announced it would likely be shifting the Seven Oaks neighborhood over when the new middle school opened. But, apparently that word did not get out to everyone,Williams said. Jessica and Alex Morales, who live in Seven Oaks, said they moved into the neighborhood so their daughter could finish high school at Wiregrass Ranch. But, it now appears that their son, who is a freshman at Wiregrass Ranch, will be reassigned to Cypress Creek High next fall. They attended the public workshop to see if there was any possibility their son could stay at Wiregrass Ranch High. “We had moved from New York. He met all of his friends in sixth grade,” Jessica Morales said. Under the proposal, he’ll be attending a high school that’s different from many of his friends. “We’re trying to lessen that blow,” she said. The family also has a second-grader they need to think about, too, she said. They are planning to learn more about what Cypress Creek High has to offer. Williams said there are other boundary changes proposed that would affect an area near State Road 52 and the Suncoast Parkway that is currently undeveloped, but has been approved for a massive development. The proposal calls for assigning the entire area to Mary Giella Elementary, Crews Lake Middle School and Hudson High, Williams said. Under the current boundaries, some of that future growth would have been assigned to Land O’ Lakes High, Pine View Middle and Connerton Elementary. Anyone who wishes to comment on the district’s proposed boundaries can fill out a comment form by going to the district’s website, at Pasco.k12.fl.us. The Pasco County School Board will have a public hearing on the proposed boundaries on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m., at 7227 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes. The final public hearing is set for the same location on Nov. 19 at 6 p.m.

because those have rotted out.” The Old Lutz School is an important building in Lutz, Ensor said. It is on both Hillsborough County’s Historic Landmark Registry and the National Register of Historic Places. The old brick building, which has Colonial Revival architectural style, was designed by Frank A.Winn Jr. He also designed the Seminole Heights Methodist Church in Tampa, the Municipal Fishing Pier and Pavilion in Ballast Point Park and Tampa Heights Methodist Church, according to the Citizens for the Old Lutz School’s website. Originally, the building had four rooms downstairs and a large auditorium upstairs. But, within a few years, the auditorium was divided into four rooms, plus a teacher’s room, the website adds. The school educated generations of Lutz families, before closing decades ago. Volunteers now run the building, Ensor said. And, each year, it is opened during the month of December, to welcome families to visit the school for several evenings of free community celebrations during the holiday season. “This will be our 23rd year of hosting Christmas at the Old Lutz School. “We host it for the whole month of

December. It allows a place for the community to come together. It’s totally free. It just sort of gives back to the community, which has given to us,” Ensor said. The building serves as a local gathering place, and helps to preserve “the small-town feel of our community,” Ensor said. “We’ll get families that will meet up there with their little kids, and the kids are running around and playing, and watching a movie in the entertainment tent. It just gives everybody a real sense of community that is hard to come by these days.” “It’s so genuine. “We get so caught up in our day-to-day lives. It gives us a chance to slow down. And, that’s what we love about the schoolhouse,” Ensor said.

Local fisherman enjoys trip of a lifetime By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

A

n August saltwater fishing adventure to the Mississippi River Delta in Louisiana marked “a once in a lifetime trip” for Wesley Chapel’s Keven Barber. Even better yet, it was all caught on national television. Barber was featured as part of the Union Sportsman’s Alliance “Brotherhood Outdoors” television series on the Sportsman Channel. The episode premiered on Oct. 8 and reaired several times during that week. It can now be viewed anytime on MyOutdoorTV.com. “Brotherhood Outdoors” is described as “a unique TV series that tells the stories of hardworking union sportsmen and women, and takes on them on the hunting or fishing trip of a lifetime.” The Union Sportsman’s Alliance each year selects a handful of union members for the show. Selections are based in part on passion for the outdoors, union membership and involvement, volunteer efforts and more. Barber, an ironworker affiliated with Tampa Bay-based Ironworkers Local 397, fit the profile of what showrunners were looking for. The avid outdoorsman said he’s been fishing, well,“since birth.” Growing up in East Pasco, Barber would fish with his father and grandfather on lakes throughout Land O’ Lakes and Zephyrhills. He hasn’t stopped angling since. “I’ve always loved fishing,” Barber said, in a recent interview with The Laker/Lutz News.“When you go fishing, you get time to spend with your family. It’s innocent, quiet. You never know what you’re going to catch. You never know what you’re going to see.” Barber conveys the same level of enthusiasm about fishing as he does in giving back to the community. The father of four boys is a scout leader, and longtime area youth and high school football coach. This year he launched the Wesley Chapel Coyotes Youth Football and Cheerleading League, with the Wesley

He also was one of 65 labor volunteers who in May helped build a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk and fishing pier at the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center in Apollo Beach. The $800,000 project took nine days and 2,300 volunteer hours, and was the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s largest conservation project to date. Barber said he hopes the new fishing pier indoctrinates a new generation of fisherman. The volunteer program also will include the donation of 500 fishing poles to youth at a Nov. 2 pier dedication ceremony. Barber underscored the importance of fishing and getting outdoors for youth:“It definitely keeps them out of trouble, plus it gives them a hobby to do the rest of their life.” He added: “The kids just need to be given a chance and opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, and (for) some of them, this

will be the first time they’ve ever been out fishing — and hopefully they enjoy it and continue to do it throughout their life.” As for Barber’s televised venture to Louisiana, it really couldn’t have gone better. He joined Union Sportsman’s Alliance Conservation and Communications Director Forrest Parker for two days of redfishing and a night of bowfishing in the untamed marshes and swamplands of Venice, Louisiana. He celebrated his 40th birthday out on the waters, too.“I was like, ‘Man, this is awesome,’” Barber recalled. Barber caught a number of Louisiana redfish that measured 40 inches to 50 inches long — considerably bulkier than the 15-inch to 20-inch redfish he often snags at the Skyway and Fort DeSoto fishing piers in St. Petersburg. Louisiana is the natural habitat of redfish, he noted, hence the larger hauls. “Every fish I caught was a personal best.

There is a recreational daily bag limit of 1 gallon of claws per person or 2 gallons per vessel, whichever is less. Recreational harvesters who are age 16 and older and fish with traps are required to complete an online, no-cost recreational stone crab trap registration and place their registration number on their traps before using them. To register, visit GoOutdoorsFlorida.com. For more information in recreational stone crab harvesting, visit MyFWC.com/Fishing and click on “Saltwater Fishing.”

It was unbelievable,” Barber said.“We used the popping rigs, and we were catching monsters in 8-foot of water that was murky. The water wasn’t even clear at the time.” Besides landing giant redfish, Barber said fishing in Louisiana is “totally different” compared to the Florida’s Gulf Coast, noting there’s more inlets, canals, marsh and swamps. “It was pretty neat. There’s a lot of good fishing out there,” he said. Navigating Louisiana water wasn’t the only new first-time experience for Barber. Being in front of omnipresent television cameras for multiple days was another. “I was kind of nervous at first with the camera, but after a while, it just becomes natural,” Barber said.“They said,‘Do whatever, act normal, and we’ll edit out whatever we need to.’ I said,‘I hope so, because there might be some bleeps in there!’” “Hopefully, I didn’t embarrass myself too much,” he joked.

In a purple and pink parachute, Gerry Austin soars through the clouds with her tandem instructor, Paul Wolfe.

Gerry Austin jokes around with a group of her supporters in the waiting area of Sky Dive City.

86-year-old woman scratches skydiving off her bucket list By Christine Holtzman choltzman@lakerlutznews.com

G

erry Austin is a spry woman. And, she’s a busy one, too. She is a regular churchgoer. She volunteers at Pregnancy Care Center in Zephyrhills. She belongs to a group that sews items for the homeless. And, she crochets hats for village children in Papua, New Guinea. But, all that seems rather low-key compared to what she did recently. The 86-year-old just skydived for the first time. It was a feat that fulfilled a promise she’d made to herself decades ago. The Wesley Chapel woman got the idea during the 1990s, while working for the Pasco News. She’d heard some ladies from Zephyrhills say they would be jumping for their 80th birthday. It sounded fun, she thought, and promised herself that she’d skydive at 80, too. But, one thing led to another, and time slipped away — and the opportunity never arose. Until earlier this month, that is. While she had never jumped out of an airplane before, Gerry said her fascination with flying is nothing new. Her husband, Richard, was completing his courses to become a pilot, before he passed away 25 years ago. She, too, had taken lessons — completing 40 minutes in the air. She had no desire to become a pilot. She just wanted to be able to land the plane, in case of an emergency. Gerry’s confident that if Richard could see her now, he’d applaud her decision to skydive. And, if he were still here, he’d probably go along for the jump, she said. When Gerry made up her mind to skydive, she heard a mixture of reactions. She shared the news with members at Charity Baptist Church, in Wesley Chapel, where she attends. One response:“You’re crazy.” Another:“Why do you want to do that?” Her answer:“You know everyone has a bucket list.Well, this was on my bucket list, and I decided because I’m getting older, I need to start completing my bucket list.” Others in her circle thought it was a fabulous idea. In fact, Betsy Strickland, of Zephyrhills, and Alvin Davis, of Wesley Chapel, had their own skydiving ambitions. Betsy always wanted to try it and figured now was as good a time as any. Alvin, a former pilot and cancer survivor, wanted to cross off skydiving on his own list.

After their first skydiving adventure together, the trio hold hands in celebration, as they walk back to the staging area. From left: Alvin Davis, Gerry Austin and Betsy Strickland.

With her instructor Paul Wolfe’s help, Gerry Austin enters the plane that she will soon jump from, at an altitude of 13,500 feet.

They asked Gerry if they could join her, and she was delighted. Their original jump date was set for Aug. 11, but a thunderstorm thwarted that plan. They jumped, instead, on Oct. 5. The trio of friends and dozens of supporters, were at Skydive City, 4241 Sky Dive Lane in Zephyrhills, for the big day. Cam King, Skydive City’s operations manager, explained that the group would do a tandem jump out of the plane at 13,500 feet. He told them they would complete a 60second free-fall, reaching speeds ranging

from 110 mph to 120 mph. The parachute would be deployed at 8,000 feet, giving them a 5- to 7-minute ride back to the ground. Gerry was visibly excited, as she waited for her group to be called. She was surrounded by dozens who had come to witness her big moment. Her tandem instructor, Paul Wolfe, came over to give her some pointers on what to expect, and as he headed off to another group, he told her:“It’s going to be exciting, it’s going to be a good day.” Minutes ticked away in what seemed like

an eternity. Finally, it was time for Gerry and her group to get strapped into their gear. Their church pastor,A. C. Bryant, led the group in a prayer, before the trio of jumpers headed to a small plane that would lift them up beyond the clouds. Gerry’s friends looked up, shielding their eyes from the sun, to watch Gerry sail in the sky. She moved gracefully, in her bright pink and purple parachute. From the ground, Gerry appeared to have a nice, long ride down to earth. Once she landed, she was quick to tell others, it was more than just a jump and descent. Her instructor turned them around several times, she said, pointing out places of interest — including a view of Tampa, from thousands of feet above the ground. As she and the others made their way back to the staging area, they held hands, savoring their shared experience. When Gerry reached the staging area, she was swarmed by her supporters, wanting her to share her take on skydiving. As adrenalin coursed through her body, she told them: “It was breathtaking. I’m speechless. You just got to do it. No words.”

To be one of the first 50 for a free vaccine, email PCAS at adoptionpartners@mypasco.net with your name and how many pets you plan to bring. You will be contacted by a PCAS staff member to confirm eligibility for a free vaccination. Be sure to bring a government-issued ID and previous rabies vaccination history on Dec. 4. To assist with a quick check-in when clinic services resume in December, the PCAS representative may ask you to complete a pet/owner information form in advance. Pasco County residents will be required to purchase a county license for their pets. To learn more, visit bit.ly/PCASclinics.
