capable, dynamic, organized and giving. They said she was a woman who held leadership roles in the woman’s club, was passionate about raising money for Canine Companions for Independence; was involved in her church, First United Methodist Church of Lutz; and, was devoted to her family. David had been battling health problems for some time, and Edwina had been hospitalized in recent months, several sources said. Friends were shocked that the couple died just one day apart.

The couple is survived by their son and his family, Keith, Pam and Gwen Vickery, of Brandon. Even though Edwina was known for not calling attention to herself, she was widely known in the community because of her leadership and good works, several sources said. She was president of the woman’s club during the years 2010 to 2012.And, she was named Lutz Guv’na in 2006, an honorary title secured by raising money to help comSee PASSING, page 13A

Regla Sanchez has always been a fan of the performing arts. And, on one occasion, while attending a show with her daughters, she thought to herself: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if everyone in the theater could bring a less advantaged child to a future show? The typical audience at a performing arts center is made up of people who have grown up going to the theater, Sanchez explained. “Spending hundreds of dollars for one performance is nothing for some of these families,” the educator said. By contrast, many of the families she works with are struggling to get by. So, Sanchez decided to try to expand the opportunities for the families she serves. The result is a partnership she inspired between Pasco County Schools and the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Tampa.

Since the partnership began two years ago, it has made it possible for 500 people — children and chaperones — to attend performances at the Straz. Shows they’ve seen include “Wicked,” “Cinderella” and “The Phantom of the Opera.” The educator’s initiative also has yielded a national award for Sanchez, presented by the Broadway League, the national trade association for the Broadway industry. Only four educators nationwide received the distinction. The partnership between the Straz and Pasco County Schools began shortly after Sanchez became the school district’s Parent Engagement Coach for Parents of English Language Learners. Sanchez wanted the families she works with to have exposure to the theater because she believes the experience can help broaden one’s view of the world and expand one’s aspirations. The Market Place at Hibiscus Place in Dade City will be marking its fifth season, with its first event this year set for Sept. 1. The market is held on the first Saturday of each month, September through May, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free, and both people and pets are welcome. Shoppers will have plenty of choices, said Lucy Avila, event coordinator. “We have a variety of vendors,” said Avila. “We could be as many as 25 to 30.” Some of the items that will be available for purchase include soaps, birdbaths and feeders, honey, fresh produce and jewelry. Patrons also can purchase cookies and scones, enjoy Italian ices and hot dogs, and sample various wines. Guests can stroll through the park, relax at picnic benches, listen to music — or step up to perform for others with the help of a karaoke machine. “It’s a hometown feeling because Dade City is that,”Avila said. All proceeds will go toward the Dade City Youth Council, which will be taking an active role at The Market Place. Camille Hernandez, Mayor of Dade City, oversees the Youth Council and has been instrumental in helping its members broaden their horizons. The Youth Council has had the opportunity to visit City Hall, where members have been able to learn about different aspects of government and how to officiate meetings. The group also has shown movies to students at Rodney B. Cox Elementary School. Avila hopes that the event will encourage patrons to attend other Dade City events, including the Festival of Christmas parade,

First female pilot earns private license in PHSC program By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The first time she steered a plane, Vanessa Baker was hooked. It was that moment, on an introductory discovery flight, that she knew piloting was the career for her. “The second you do it, you fall in love,” Baker said.“It was kind of like an addiction after, like you do it and once you’re like, ‘This is awesome! I want to do this again!’” Baker, 24, is the first — and currently the only— female pilot student at PascoHernando State College to have earned a private pilot’s license, through the school’s professional pilot technology program. Baker’s interest in flying piqued after her father showed her a magazine about the PHSC’s new aviation department at the East Campus in Dade City. A self-proclaimed “wild child,” Baker figured she’d give it a shot. She’s had fun ever since. “Literally, every day I’m there, I have the best time,” she said of learning to fly. Baker began taking classes in January and earned her first wings in July. “I do feel a sense of accomplishment, like,‘Hey, I was the first female to do this. If I can do it, you can definitely do it,’” she said. Along with the designation at PHSC, Baker joins rare company nationwide. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reports about 7 percent of all pilots are females, equating to about 42,000 total. Even fewer are commercial pilots, which Baker wants to become someday. Said Baker:“I definitely do think it’s interesting that it’s mostly a male-dominated field. I think that’s very weird. It doesn’t make any sense to me at all, and I think it would be really cool if that changed.” Mark Aragon, PHSC professional pilot director, said other female students are enrolled in the PHSC aviation program, but have yet to get their private pilot’s license. He also noted just 10 percent of all pilot students across each state college end up earning their wings, making Baker part of an “elite group.” Aragon taught Baker her aviation ground school classes. The instructor admits Baker struggled early on, but her effort and dedication has won out in a pilot technology program, which he said “is like drinking from a fire hose.” “She’s going to be very successful,” Aragon said.“She has that stick-to-itiveness, that drive and desire that like,‘This is what I want to do. This is what I want to be. I’m not going to let anything slow me down.’” Private pilot license in hand, Baker is still seeking her instrument pilot rating, multi-engine pilot rating and commercial pilot license — all through the two-year professional pilot technology associates of science degree program. She’s racked up more than 100 flying hours at the American Aviation Flight Academy at the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport. She needed about 40 hours to earn her private license.

Vanessa Baker is the first, and currently the only, female piloting student from PascoHernando State College to have earned a private pilot’s license through the school’s professional pilot technology program. She began taking classes in January and earned her first wings in July. She has about another year-and-a-half in the associates of science aviation degree program.

At the academy, Baker trains in a Cessna 172, a four-seat, single-engine, high wing, fixed-wing aircraft that cruises at 140 mph and reaches more than 180 mph. She’s flown throughout Florida, passing over Naples, St. Augustine, Crystal River, Gainesville, Ocala and Crystal River, and even going as far north as Valdosta, Georgia. The thrill of flying still hasn’t worn off, Baker said. “You definitely feel alive,” she said.“I still look out the window when I’m flying, and I’m just like,‘Wow, I can’t believe I get to do this!’” In between her busy class and flight schedule, Baker works as a phlebotomist at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel, not leaving much room for free time. “It’s a lot of work, but totally worth it,” Baker said.“I think this is probably the best decision I’ve ever made — definitely the hardest decision I’ve ever made.” The state college launched its aviation department last August. It began offering two Associate of

maintenance administration and unmanned vehicles systems operations. The two–year programs are designed for students interested in becoming private and commercial pilots or airport managers. Other possible career opportunities include flight dispatchers, transportation security officers, various Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) occupations, aviation safety and aircraft manufacturing. Pilot students, who receive more than 200 flying hours during the entire degree program, also train on the FAA-approved Advanced Flight Simulator Laboratory, located at PHSC’s East Campus. The simulators can be reconfigured to emulate all types of aircraft in any environment or weather condition, providing a realistic experience. Besides flight training, other classroom topics cover meteorology, flight safety and security, flight theory, and aviation regulations, among others. Baker and other PHSC aviation students seem to be entering the aviation industry at an ideal time. A 2017 report by Boeing estimates airlines in North America are going to need 117,000 new pilots and more than 200,000 aviation mechanics in the next 20 years, as passenger and cargo airlines worldwide are expected to buy 41,000 new airliners through 2036. And, retirements at U.S. airlines will start to rise precipitously starting in 2021 as the current crop of pilots turn 65, the mandated age of retirement. More than 42 percent of active U.S. airline pilots at the biggest carriers will retire over the next 20 years, according to a 2017 report by Cowen & Company. In Florida, meanwhile, employment as a professional pilot is expected to grow by about 13.5 percent between 2016 and 2024, according to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (FDEO). Pilots in Pasco and Hernando counties typically earn entry level salaries of about $30,000 for a private pilot, and up to $104,000 for a commercial pilot, the FDEO says. “The risk is worth the reward,” Baker said.“I think it’s a great thing to get into, and I don’t know why more people don’t do it.”

The Laker/Lutz News announces staff changes By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Staff writer Kathy Steele has retired from her post at The Laker/Lutz News, stepping away from the county government, development, business and transportation beats. Those responsibilities will be assumed by B.C. Manion, editor of the newspaper. At the same time, Brian Fernandes, a graduate of the University of South Florida’s journalism program, has joined the staff, and will be concentrating his efforts on feature profiles, community events and general assignment reporting. The Laker/Lutz News appreciates Steele’s dedication to accuracy and her ability to track wide-ranging issues that are important to our readers. At the same time, the newspaper is excit-

ed to expand its coverage of the people and places within the region through the addition of Fernandes to the editorial team. In recent months,The Laker/Lutz News has increased its use of photography to help tell the story of community life within our coverage area. Those visuals have been generated by regular contributor Christine Holtzman, who has demonstrated her ability to capture a broad spectrum of life through her artistic eye and outstanding photography skills. As always, The Laker/Lutz News welcomes story ideas and pitches for feature profiles, event coverage or photo opportunities. We evaluate every idea we receive. If you have a suggestion for us to consider, please email us at news@lakerlutznews.com.

What’s Cookin’ Do you know the ‘Muffin Man? How about your muffin pan? By Betsy Crisp

Tuna-Tomato Melts

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

I am always looking for quick, easy, unique recipe ideas – this time I had a convenient source of inspiration. I just reached into my kitchen cabinet and pulled out a common baking pan – the muffin pan! The beauty of cooking in a 6- or 12-cup muffin pan is that recipes become individual, pre-portioned servings, that are very portable (grab and go) and can easily be served. Some can even be frozen for reheating/eating at a later date. You can make appetizers, breakfast, main dishes, side dishes and even desserts. The muffin pan is a very versatile pan that produces its own unique shape. The pan comes in mini (12 or 24 wells), standard (6 or 12 wells), and jumbo (6 wells). Of course, I have them all. The pans are now produced in silicone, as well as the traditional metal pans — which also come with a nonstick finish. In the past, I primarily used my pans in various sizes mostly for a wide variety of muffins and cupcakes. However, I did branch out at times to line them with corned beef hash with an egg in the center of each cup and for mini-meatloaves. But, that was about as creative as I got. Since retirement, I have had more time to participate in family reunions and covered-dish community events, so I have been

experimenting a little more. My old family favorite recipes, such as crustless sausage quiche for breakfast, and baked macaroni and cheese with breadcrumbs easily can be converted to muffin pan cooking. Recipes can be created to use up leftovers and will save cooking time because of the smaller size. At this time of year when kids are starting back to school, these kid-friendly recipes will come in handy. Ingredients: • Olive oil cooking spray (or butter/margarine to grease wells) • 3 light whole grain English muffins, split in half • 2 cans (7 ounces each, or three 5 ounce cans) light or Albacore tuna, packed in water and drained • 1/3 cup light mayonnaise • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • ½ small lemon, zested and juiced • 3 Tablespoons spring onions (scallions), chopped • 2 Tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (or 2 teaspoons, dried) • ½ teaspoon dried Italian herbs • ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper • 2 plum tomatoes, sliced

Crusty Loaded Mashed Potato Cups (Use a standard 12-cup, nonstick muffin pan)

Ingredients: • 2 Tablespoons unsalted butter (or margarine) • 4 Tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated • 8 Tablespoons Italian breadcrumbs • 2 large eggs • ¼ cup light sour cream • 1 cup extra-sharp cheddar cheese • 2 Tablespoons fresh chives (or scallion tops), chopped • 3 tablespoons precooked bacon pieces (or approximately 3 strips cooked and crumbled) • ¼ teaspoon pepper • 4 cups leftover mashed potatoes Instructions: • Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit • Mix parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs together • Grease each well with butter/margarine.

Cheesy Broccoli-Rice Cups (Use a standard 12-cup, nonstick muffin pan)

Ingredients: • 2 cups brown rice (or white), cooked • 2 cups broccoli (fresh or frozen – thawed and patted dry), chopped • 2 cups cheddar cheese (mild or sharp yellow), shredded and divided by 2 • ½ cup ranch dressing • 4 large eggs, beaten • Salt and pepper, to taste Instructions: • Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

• 1 ½ cups (6 ounces) shredded or 6 slices of cheese (sharp cheddar or Italian Blend/mozzarella) Instructions: • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit • Spray each well with cooking spray • Press half an English muffin into each well • In a medium bowl, combine the tuna, mayo, mustard, lemon zest, lemon juice, onion, parsley, Italian herbs, and pepper. Gently stir to mix. • Evenly divide tuna mixture into each well on top of English muffin • Top each with a slice of tomato and a slice of cheese • Bake for approximately 12 minutes or until cheese is bubbling and starting to brown Yield: 6 servings. Divide breadcrumb mixture evenly into each well, and press on bottom and up sides to form a crust. • In a large bowl, whisk eggs and sour cream • Add cheese, chives, bacon, pepper, mashed potatoes, and mix well • Divide evenly into the 12 wells (cups) • Bake 30 minutes or until the potatoes begin to pull away from sides of the pan and cheese is golden brown • Let the potatoes cool for 5-10 minutes in the pan. Slide knife blade around the edge to help loosen before removing and serving Yield: 12 servings. Note: Using this same three-ingredient “crust recipe,” you can substitute your favorite baked macaroni and cheese recipe for the potatoes mixture. Just be sure to make a little more of the crumb mixture to sprinkle on the top! • Grease a standard 12-cup muffin pan • In a large bowl, stir together all ingredients (retain 1 cup of cheese) until well-mixed • Divide evenly into the 12 wells and top with the remaining cup of cheese • Bake for 25 minutes to 30 minutes or until edges of cheese start to brown • Remove from oven and run a knife around the edge of each one to remove easily and cleanly Yield: Makes 12 muffins. (2 muffins = 1 main dish serving) Note: Cooked/canned chicken could be added to increase protein.

A Personal Approach to Plumbing By William Jacko Special to The Laker / Lutz News

When people think of an American success story, they may very well be thinking of Vladimir Breton and Optimum Plumbing. After earning a civil engineering degree in his native Dominican Republic, Breton immigrated to the United States and took a job as a plumber’s assistant in New York. He did not speak English, but he had a plan — to one day own his own business. Breton eventually moved to Florida to fulfill his dream. Starting with nothing, in just five years he proceeded to build a successful plumbing business. It was 2012 when Breton founded Optimum Plumbing in Land O’ Lakes with just one truck, and today the business has grown to five trucks servicing customers throughout Tampa Bay. Services include new plumbing fixtures, leak detection, inspections, gas and waterline repair, re-piping, sewer line video inspections, repair and installation of garbage disposals, tubs, sinks, and water closets and whole-house water filters. “We are also a licensed general contractor,” Breton said. “We wanted to offer more than just plumbing, and are now doing kitchen and bathroom renovation locally, and hotel and apartment complex renovation everywhere in Florida.” Breton strongly believes in soliciting feedback from his customers to improve service. “We always follow up with the customer,” he said. “We call the next day to make sure everything is OK, to ask, ‘How was the service? How was the technician?’ As soon as we close the call, we send a thank you email and send a link and to give us a review.” Optimum Plumbing has earned more than its share of recognition. In 2013, the

COURTESY OF DAVE FUSON

Hispanic Business Initiative Fund awarded it Startup of the Year. In 2016, it won the Pasco Economic Development Council Service and Distribution Industry of the Year Category 1 Award. The Better Business Bureau has rated it A+ for three consecutive years, and Angie’s List has awarded it Super Service in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Breton appreciates the importance of community and is active in the Central Pasco, Upper Tampa Bay, and North Tampa Bay chambers of commerce. “My wife and I have become part of the community,” he said. “Wherever we go, people know us. The business has been a way to meet people and to support community projects.” Family is very important to Breton, and not surprisingly, several family members are involved in the business, including his wife as office manager, his sister-in-law as marketing director and even his 20-yearold college-student daughter, who works part- time in dispatching.” Being licensed, bonded and insured, Optimum Plumbing offers 24-hour emergency service for plumbing, drain service and water heaters, and provide warranties on all of their work. “We stand by our work, everything that we do, no matter what it is, from a job as simple as a garbage disposal to a sewer line cleaning,” Breton said.

Donation benefits heroes

John Mucci and the Oasis community presented a check in the amount of $4,531 to Operation Patriot at the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home. Operation Patriot is a 501-C3 all-volunteer charity that helps provide some of the needed basic supplies and fun events to aging heroes. In the last four years, Oasis in Land O’ Lakes has raised $11,000 for Operation Patriot through its annual July Fourth event.

Pasco creates Ridge Road Extension website The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Pasco County’s engineering service department has created a website that tracks progress of the proposed Ridge Road Extension project. The website (http://bit.ly/RidgeRoadProject) provides information about the history of the project, a project overview, current activities, a project fact sheet and the latest information. The road is intended to improve east-west roadway capacity and enhance overall mobility within the area bounded by State Road 52 to the north and State Road 54 to the south, U.S. 41 to the east and Moon Lake Road, Decubellis Road and Starkey Boulevard to the west, according to the website. The project will also provide additional roadway capacity and improved routing

away from coastal hazard areas, and improve hurricane evacuation clearance times in the event of a hurricane or other major weatherrelated occurrence, the website adds. The county has sought approval for the road project for about two decades. The proposed 8-mile extension would link Moon Lake Road in West Pasco to U.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes. The county has identified the road extension as a priority, but it continues to face opposition because a part of the project would cut through a portion of the Serenova Preserve. Detailed construction plans are being prepared and are anticipated to be completed prior to the permit decision. The county expects a permit decision by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in late Summer 2019, according to the website.

CARES (Community Aging & Retirement Services) was the recipient of monies raised by the Pasco County Tax Collector’s five offices through its monthly charitable giving program. CARES is a Pasco County-based organization that provides services to seniors to keep them in their homes and be independent. ROBOTIC GUIDANCE SYSTEM

Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is the first hospital in the Tampa Bay area, and only the second in Florida, to offer the Globus ExcelsiusGPS surgical robotic guidance system through its neurospine program. The system is the first and only robotic platform for spine surgery that combines surgical navigation and robotic guidance, and improve accuracy and patient care for precise minimally invasive spine surgeries by using robotics and navigation. The system provides real time imaging to physicians for increased safety and accuracy; more precise positioning of screws during surgery, less exposure to radiation; and potentially shorter surgery and recovery time for patients. The hospital’s neurospine program launched in October 2017 in response for a growing need from the community and a desire for patients to have a long-term solution for spinal pain.

FLORIDA HOSPITAL GETS NAME CHANGE

Florida Hospital and its parent company, Adventist Health System, will be renamed AdventHealth effective Jan. 2, according to a news release from the hospital’s parent company, Adventist Health System. There will be no change in ownership. The rebrand will make it easier for customers to distinguish AdventHealth’s care locations and service, the news release stated. Nearly 50 hospital campuses, with more than 80,000 employees, will be unified under the single name. “Becoming AdventHealth allows us to be a fully integrated and distinguishable health system across all aspects of the care continuum, while also speaking to our Christian healing ministry, message of wholeness and our rich Seventh-day Adventist roots,” Terry Shaw, president and chief executive officer of Advent Health System, the hospital’s parent company, said in the news release. A transition campaign with television and print advertisements will be featured in September, in various media markets nationwide. Signs and other visual elements at hospitals and other care facilities will be changed in January.

RECYCLE WITH CRAYOLA

Crayola ColorCycle was launched as a way to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment. Through the initiative, students in kindergarten through 12th grade in schools across the United States and parts of Canada can collect and repurpose used Crayola markers. Teachers and students have the opportunity to explore eco-friendly practices through specially developed standardsbased lesson plans to enrich instruction and

promote lively class discussion. There are four steps to becoming an EcoCool School. • Inform the school administrators or parent-teacher organization about participating in the ColorCycle program. • Set up a collection station in the school for used markers. Count up all the markers. • Pack markers in a cardboard box (with minimal outer markings). Print out a shipping label. • FedEx Ground will pick up the markers – Crayola pays all the shipping charges. PASSING, from page 1A munity causes. “Edwina was one of the most generous people you’d ever run into,” said Nancy Fisher, who has known Edwina since 2005. She was a good friend, too. “Anyone that was sick, down, whatever — she had a cake there. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen her take cakes to people,” Fisher said. “She was a wonderful baker, fantastic cook. Her home was always open to have events for the woman’s club,” Fisher added. Edwina and Fisher worked closely together to raise money for Canine Companions for Independence, a service dog organization. “She headed DogFest for three years,” Fisher said, noting Edwina was instrumental in raising more than $130,000 for service dogs.“It would not have gone (on) without her. She put her whole heart into it.” When the woman’s club holds a BowWow Bingo Fundraiser on Aug. 30, it also will honor Edwina, Fisher said. “I’ve asked everyone to wear pearls. She always had pearls — a bracelet, earrings, a necklace, something,” Fisher said.“We want to remember her.” Pat Serio, another woman’s club member, met Edwina through the club. “I remember Edwina showing obvious signs of leadership from Day 1, and she lost no time in immediately accepting duties, club offices,” Serio said, via email. “Family, her strong faith and service to her community meant everything to her. We, in the club, have missed her terribly during these past 5 months of her illness and will continue to feel the void for a long while,” Serio said. “Edwina’s beloved David survived her by only one day, and we rejoice in that they are

VISION, from page 1A serves come from families with parents who work as migrant laborers, so they don’t know any different kind of career, Sanchez said. And, some of them have never left their community or had a chance to see downtown Tampa, she said. Sanchez came up with a bold approach: She’d make a cold call at the Straz to pitch her idea. “The security guard literally said,‘Do you have an appointment?’ “I said, ‘I do not. I just need to speak to someone about my vision to see if they

now reunited for eternity. RIP dear friends, Edwina and David,” Serio said. Mike Mullins, a friend of David’s since 1971, recalled that the couple met when they were supervisors in the Youth Conservation Corps program. Both of them were science teachers, said Mullins, who met David during a teacher conference on Sanibel Island. David taught at Eisenhower Junior High School and Jefferson High School, Mullins said. “He was the kind of guy that would go out and bring in stuff for the kids to see. He

was a very interactive teacher.” David also loved to cook out, was involved in karate, was a firearms expert and instructor, and enjoyed spending time on his lake, Mullin said. Rick Cabot, the pastor at First United Methodist Church of Lutz, said Edwina was involved in many ways at the church. She helped with the massive project to relocate the church from its former site on Lutz Lake Fern Road near U.S. 41, to its current location, on Lutz Lake Fern near North Dale Mabry Highway.

It was a huge undertaking, involving the acquisition of land, design of the building and scores of other details, Cabot said. Edwina also helped raise money to pay for the project, which Cabot estimated at between $5.5 million and $6 million. Additionally, Edwina was dedicated to preparing communion for the congregation. She was typically there by herself early on Sunday mornings, Cabot said. “She would have the biggest smile on her face,” he said, and as she filled each communion cup “it was like she was concerned for that person that would be partaking it. She just did it with so much love.” “Edwina’s heart for people and heart for God were simply incredible,” Cabot added. “I just can’t say enough kind things about her.” “The biggest thing is how she made people feel when she was around them: Loved and cared about, that they were important,” the pastor said. In a previous interview with The Laker/Lutz News, Edwina said she wanted to join the woman’s club because it was genuinely determined to serve the community. She also offered her impression of the Lutz/Land O’ Lakes community. “Lutz and Land O’ Lakes have this old town flavor,” she said.“I grew up in a little town in Brevard County (Cocoa), so it takes me back to my youth. There are a lot of great traditions in this area.” When the woman’s club was celebrating its 50th anniversary, Edwina, then president, described the group as purposeful, empowered women. She said she was attracted to the club because of its focus on service. “I was raised with the idea that you are not a burden to your society and that you give back,” she said. Apparently, those lessons stuck. A service for the couple is pending.

would partner with me and support my idea.’ “That’s how it all started,” she said. Sanchez wound up talking to Alice Santana, community programs manager for Patel Conservatory at the Straz. Santana described what happened, via email. She said Sanchez explained the need, and the Straz decided to respond. “Regla was so passionate about exposing her students to more that we quickly jumped at the opportunity to bring her vision to life,” Santana said. Next, Sanchez reached out to her supervisor, Katty Chois, to see if funding could be obtained to pay for buses.

That happened, too. Under the partnership, the Straz provides tickets, which are distributed to different schools serving students learning English, Sanchez said.Typically, a group of students will go, accompanied by chaperones. Sometimes the performances are on the weekend, so parents take their children. Sanchez is thrilled that the partnership came together and is continuing. “I’ve loved this from (the) get-go. I love to see the children engage.Their faces glow in the theater when they look around,” she said. The Straz has the opportunity to nominate an educator each year for a Broadway League’s Educator Apple Award. “This year, across the department, it was a

unanimous decision to submit Regla for this honor,” Santana said. “Regla is a true advocate for her students and their families, and a champion for theater,” Santana explained. The educator was determined to find out-of-the box opportunities. The structure of the partnership between Pasco schools and the Straz will serve as a template for replicating the program with other counties, Santana added. For Sanchez, the national recognition is icing on the cake. “I was already rewarded. This is like a dream come true. God had blessed me with this opportunity. I’ve had doors open,” Sanchez said.

Ian Flores receives state, national honors By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

H

is high school soccer career is over, but Ian Flores is still picking up accolades for his contributions at Wiregrass Ranch High School. Last month, Flores was named the 2018 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Florida State High School Player of the Year. That followed another prestigious designation he earned recently: 2017-2018 United Soccer Coaches Winter-Spring Boys High School All-America. Flores, who graduated in May, was one of just two players from Florida (and 20 total nationwide) to be selected to the AllAmerica team. In the last six years, just 11 players from Florida have received the award. As a senior, Flores tallied 20 assists in more than 1,900 minutes of play— an integral part of a Bulls team that went 24-6-1 and reached the Class 5A regional semifinals. Flores, however, wasn’t anticipating such individual honors as he played out his senior season. His main goal instead was to try and help his teammates win a state title. “Really, getting All-America or high school player of the year wasn’t in my head at all. It just kind of happened just from playing naturally with my teammates,” said Flores, also a First Team All-Sunshine Athletic Conference selection. Even so, the state and national recognition is “very exciting” to Flores, who was a team captain and three-year varsity player at Wiregrass Ranch. “I know that not a lot of people have gotten such honors like that before,” Flores said.“I didn’t know that would reach Pasco County.” Flores and other 2017-18 United Soccer Coaches All-Americans will be formally recognized at the 2019 United Soccer Coaches Convention in Chicago, Jan. 9 to Jan. 13. Longtime Wiregrass Ranch head coach

COURTESY OF CARLOS FLORES

Wiregrass Ranch product Ian Flores, right, was recently named 2018 NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) Florida State High School Player of the Year. He’s pictured here with Wiregrass Ranch head coach Dave Wilson.

Dave Wilson said the postseason awards bestowed on Flores are well-deserved. “Skill-wise and talent-wise, he was fantastic. The little things that make one a great player is really where Ian shined, too,” Wilson said. “There were games that he would score goals, and there were other games we’d score goals because of him,”Wilson said.“He was pretty much picture perfect on the field.” Size, or lack of it, is a trait Flores often had to overcome to become a top player. At 5-foot-6 and 125 pounds, Flores has relied on his soccer IQ as much as his quickness, footwork and passing skills. “It’s always about being smarter than

your opponents,” Flores said.“If someone’s bigger than you, you have to adjust. If you’re going up against a 6-foot-4 striker, you have to play smarter to beat him to the ball.” The impact on the field speaks for itself. But, Flores’ leadership qualities stood out, too, his high school coach said. “He was such a good leader and such a good, positive role model,” Wilson said. “Even when he was younger, just his work ethic and everything he did, he was just so positive that it’d be really hard to measure how important he was to our team.” Wilson has had many elite players come through the Bulls over the years. As many as 14 of his players have gone on to play collegiate soccer scholarships.

Flores, however, was the most sought after in program history, receiving dozens of scholarship offers and inquiries from over 60 colleges of all levels — Division I, Division II, Division III, and NAIA schools. Said Wilson: “He had more offers and more interest from colleges than any player we’ve ever had. To have someone get as many offers as Ian did and then all the accolades that came along with it — it’s pretty impressive.” Out of the many postsecondary suitors, Flores signed with Oglethorpe University, a Division III program in suburban Atlanta. Flores feels it’s the right fit over other Division I and Division II schools and the handful of professional invites he received. “I was looking for a place where I was just going to be happy playing. I knew that if I came here, I would’ve had a great opportunity to play,” Flores said. Now in preseason practices at Oglethorpe, Flores is adjusting to a higher level of play and training. That includes 5 a.m., daily workouts. “The level is much more intense once you get into college,” Flores said.“The level of play is much more different, much more faster. More people play one, two touch instead of dribbling.” But, Flores seems to be handling the transition well, looking to make an immediate impact. He recently recorded the top mark of all Oglethorpe freshmen in the program’s YoYo intermittent endurance test, used to measure a player’s cardiovascular fitness level. The feat obviously caught the eye of Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin, who played soccer at Saint Leo University and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame in 1999. “Everything that we recruited him for he’s delivering on,”Akin said of Flores.“He fits in well with the team, and I think he’s going to be a player who — on a very, very talented team— will be able to contribute this season. “We’re very glad he’s with us. We think he’s going to be extremely successful,”Akin said.

Enjoying nature’s grand displays By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A

ny time that Lillian Cucuzza and her husband, Dave, want to take in a nature show, they just look out their back window, step out into their backyard or walk around the culde-sac to a pond near their yard. The Land O’ Lakes nature lovers enjoy a visual feast every day. They see hummingbirds, Carolina wrens, cardinals, red-shouldered hawks and all of the birds of prey. There are birds that come by to grab a bite from a feeder, enjoy the nectar from a plant, or make a snack on insects. “If you want to attract the really nice birds, get the golden safflower bird feed,” Lillian advised.“It doesn’t sprout. The black birds and doves and pigeons — they don’t like it because it’s bitter to them.” “We get our bird feed from Wild Bird USA,” Lillian said. “It’s nonsprouting, so it doesn’t grow weeds.” She also noted: “We used to put out a hummingbird feeder, where you had to put the sugar water out. But, you have to change it almost every day, otherwise it’s not good. “I’m like,‘I’m not doing that’. “We also have a suet feeder out there that we get from Wild Bird. It’s the suet dough. It’s not greasy. We get a lot of the woodpeckers and different warblers,” she said. Dave’s in charge of stocking the feeders. Some birds hang out in a birdhouse out back or in the nearby woods. Others make their home in a pair of palm trees near the couple’s front door. “We get little cardinals. They make little nests in there,” Lillian said. Besides observing wildlife in their backyard, the couple also enjoys sightings of deer, blue herons, ibises, white egrets and other winged creatures in or near a pond, on a neighboring property. “There’s a little gator in there,” Lillian said.“I saw it recently.A little 3- or 4-footer.” When she was waiting for the gator to make an appearance one day, a trio of deer showed up.

SOME POINTERS FOR CREATING YOUR OWN BACKYARD HABITAT

If you’d like to make your yard a welcoming place for birds, butterflies and other creatures, here are some pointers from Lara Milligan, a natural resources agent at Pinellas County Extension. She provided these tips during a seminar she gave earlier this year at the Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park community center. “We’re exploding with development and construction, leaving less opportunities for our native wildlife to live and exist,” Milligan said. “Any little bit that we can do in our yards, or in your community or neighborhood, is helpful and beneficial for wildlife. “Just like us,” she reminded the audience, “wildlife need food, water, cover and space.” When it comes to creating conducive conditions to attract wildlife, it’s important to think big, and small, she said. “We often think of wildlife as some of these bigger creatures, but it’s really important that we’re also attracting the little creatures. If you don’t have the little guys, we’re not going to be attracting anything else,” Milligan said. Here are some of her tips. Tip No. 1: Limit the amount of lawn that you have. Turf grass doesn’t do much for wildlife. Consider providing alternative ground covers, such as beach sunflower or sunshine mimosa. Tip No. 2: Increase the vertical layering in your yard. You want stuff to be at all levels, from the ground level up to the tops of trees. When planting, think about what the plant will look like at maturity. You don’t want giant gaps in your landscape. Tip No. 3: Keep those dying and diseased and knocked over trees in your landscape, unless they pose a hazard to your house. Woodpeckers and other cavity nesters rely on these snags for shelter. Screech owls can’t excavate their own cavities, so they rely on woodpeckers to do that for them. Tip No. 4: Keep brush piles in your yard, but not next to your house. They provide shelter for the smaller organisms,

Blue-gray gnatcatchers are tiny — only about 4 inches from the tip of their beak to their tail, and they’re quite quick — catching gnats mid-air.

which are an important part of the food chain. Tip No. 5: Provide water.Any source of water you provide in your yard will benefit wildlife. Tip No. 6: If you have a birdbath, remember to keep it filled at 2 inches to 3 inches of water. Birds won’t use it if the water is too deep. Also, keep it clean and don’t use chemicals to clean it. A sturdy scrub brush should do. It’s also important to keep the space around it clear so birds can see potential predators. Tip No. 7: Plant native plants in your yard. They resist pests and diseases, and generally require less care. If you want butterflies, be sure to have plants that are appropriate for caterpillars and for butterflies. Create a small moist area of sand in

your yard. Butterflies will suck water out of moist sand to give them the minerals and nutrients they need. Tip No. 8: Add bird feeders. The diversity of bird feeders that you install will increase the diversity of birds that you attract. The same goes for seeds. Be sure to keep your bird feeders clean.

Devour Right Now Pulled Pork Sandwich. That’s everyday easy.

Tip No. 9: Manage your pets. Cats and dogs can have a really huge impact on native wildlife species. Tip No. 10: Seek natural solutions to pest problems. Being vigilant can help nip pest problems in the bud. Often, spraying pests off with a hose can solve the problem. If pesticides are needed, use sparingly.

LOCAL WILDLIFE

Mr. Bean is intelligent and compassionate Mr. Bean is an English Springer Spaniel that was rescued from a puppy mill, along with his two brothers. While in a shelter, Mr. Bean was very ill and appeared to be depressed. Now, at 11 years old, he is a healthy, loving dog thanks to a foster program, his former foster mother, and the veterinarians at a local shelter. Mr. Bean seems to have a sixth sense about people and how they feel. Every night he spends time with his owners, Howard and Natalie Engel, on the couch, while they are watching TV or reading. Mr. Bean and the Engels reside in Country Walk in Wesley Chapel.

The chamber is sponsoring a day of community service to help residents by painting and doing basic landscaping. The event will be on Sept. 15 at 9 a.m., at 7809 N. Glen Ave., in Tampa. Cash, checks, gift cards, movie tickets and event tickets also are needed. Drop-off sites for donations will be at Uncle Maddios, 3949 Van Dyke Road in Lutz; U.S. Renal, 3421 N. Lakeview Drive in Tampa; and Subway, 13032 Race Track Road in Tampa. This also would be an opportunity for children who need to fulfill community service hours for school. Donations being sought include bed linens for twin and full size beds; washcloths, hand and bath towels; toiletries for travel or full size; and drapes for eight bedrooms. For information, email Jody Fowler at Jodyfowler@moresinsuranceservices.com.

COFFEE SOCIAL

The North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce will have its Monthly Coffee Social on September 18 at 8 a.m., at Buttermilk Provisions, 2653 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., in Wesley Chapel. This is a “no agenda” event with time for social networking. For information, call Grace Martin at (813) 994-8534.

Have you noticed?

MDHearingAidÂŽ uses the same kind of Advanced Hearing Aid Technology incorporated into hearing aids that cost thousands more at a small fraction of the price. Over 300,000 satisďŹ ed MDHearingAid customers agree: High-quality, FDA-registered hearing aids don’t have to cost a fortune. The fact is, you don’t need to spend thousands for a hearing aid. MDHearingAid is a medical-grade hearing aid offering sophistication and high performance, and works right out of the box with no timeconsuming “adjustmentâ€? appointments. You can contact a licensed hearing specialist conveniently online or by phone — even after your purchase at no cost. No other company provides such extensive support. A study by the National Institute on Aging suggests older individuals with hearing loss are signiďŹ cantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s and dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. They suggest that an intervention — such as a hearing aid — could delay or prevent this by improving hearing!

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR 45-DAY RISK-FREE TRIAL! Hearing is believing and we invite you to try this nearly invisible hearing aid with no annoying whistling or background noise for yourself. If you are not completely satisďŹ ed with your MDHearingAid, return it within 45 days for a FULL REFUND.
