Cybercrimes on the rise, expert says

By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Cyber-related crimes don’t appear to be going away anytime soon. Pasco Sheriff Sgt. Sam Pepenella knows that better than most — as the unit supervisor of the agency’s cyber and computer forensic investigations. He shared some of his insights as the featured guest speaker at an East Pasco

Networking Group meeting in Dade City last month. The Sheriff’s Office processes about 9,000 digital devices — phones, tablets, computers — every year, a significant rise from when Pepenella helped form the special unit nearly a decade ago. “It’s getting busier,” the law enforcement officer said. In traditional crime, perpetrators use a pry bar and pop open a door, Pepenella

said. Cybercriminals, he said, run their fingers over a keyboard and find a way to break in. Much of Pepenella’s talk focused on common online scams his unit has been seeing lately. One, known as phishing, is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit See CYBERCRIMES, page 15A

A FUNTASTIC SUMMER EXPO

DIRECTORY Inside this week Pages 8A & 9A

The Pinellas Community Foundation and the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas are working together to assess the unmet needs of seniors and their caregivers. A survey—the Community Assessment Survey of Older Adults — will be sent to 10,000 randomly selected households across every Pinellas and Pasco zip code in which at least one resident is known to be aged 60 and over. The survey will be sent the week of April 8. Residents will receive a postcard in advance, as well as instructions (in both English and Spanish) with the survey. Data collection will continue through May 21. In addition to the mailed survey, two focus groups will be conducted in Pasco County – one in Dade City and one in New Port Richey. “We’re really excited to be able to do this because it’s the first time ever that seniors will have a voice across both counties on what their needs are,” said Anne Marie Winter, executive director of Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas. “As far as we know, it’s (the survey) never been done at all in Central West Florida,” she said. “We want to hear from the seniors. We don’t want to be the ones that decide what seniors need, based on what we think,” she said. The postcard and letter are being sent to make sure that survey recipients “know that this is official, that it is going to be used for their best interest. “We’re not going to try and sell them anything. We’re not going to try and use this See SURVEY, page 15A

COURTESY OF THE ITALIAN-AMERICAN SOCIAL CLUB OF TAMPA BAY

Although the Italian-American Social Club of Tampa Bay focuses on community outreach, they also know how to have a good time. Last year’s Columbus Day event, allowed members to sway with their partners on the dance floor.

Local club celebrates Italian heritage By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznew.com

Members of the Italian-American Social Club of Tampa Bay meet monthly in Lutz with the goal of preserving their heritage for future generations. The nonprofit club also provides a social atmosphere that’s conducive to meeting new friends. And, it supports local charities. “We’ll talk about events we’ll want to do – our future plans, but mostly it’s the camaraderie of the folks,” said Frank Giordano, the club’s marketing officer.“The folks really enjoy the togetherness.” The organization initially branched off from the Italian-American Club based in Ybor City in 2014. Italian descendants who attended the St. Timothy Catholic Church in Lutz noticed the ethnic group’s large number in the Tampa Bay Area – especially in North Tampa. So, about five years ago, the church members decided to open a new branch to accommodate residents living in this region. It was a matter of geographical convenience — because it eliminated the commute time between North Tampa and Ybor City. “I’ve been looking for a local club, so I joined,” said Giordano, who’d been invited to a meeting by a member.

Currently, the second generation ItalianAmerican is among the club’s estimated 150 members. Part of the reason the club has so many members is that it welcomes non-Italians to join. All are welcome to join, Giordano said, whether the person is married to someone of Italian descent, or has no ethnic connection whatsoever. With a grin, Giordano said newcomers can be expected though to hear members brag about their heritage. Indeed, he might be the one who is bragging:“I’m very proud to be Italian,” he said. Of course, club meetings aren’t complete without delicious food. Members bring dishes to share in a potluck meal before the business part of the meeting begins. Some of the foods they share include pizza, spaghetti, pasta, salads, sausage and chicken, to name just a few. With Italian music playing in the background, it is customary to stay active with several rounds of bocce – an Italian ball game. Some of the club’s members hail from the homeland, and are known to tell stories about life in Italy. They also provide advice to other members who are planning to travel to the “beautiful country,” Giordano said. International music composer calls Pasco home By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

When it comes to music,Wesley Chapel’s Nick Coetzee does a little bit of everything. He’s a songwriter. He’s a composer. He’s a producer. He’s a worship leader. “I love being creative, Coetzee said.“I love doing something different every day. An ear for melodies has led to a lasting 30year career that’s taken him pretty far — literally. Born and raised in South Africa, Coetzee’s first big break came in Australia in the early 1990s, when he was tasked with helping churches craft contemporary style music programs. “I started getting into programming music for songwriters, and I started writing my own songs and creating my own albums, Coetzee explained. Opportunities followed for Coetzee while in the land Down Under. He scored music for more than 250 episodes of an Australian television drama series called,‘Paradise Beach.’ He used a guitar to score the five-night-a-week soap opera, which also aired in several European countries in the early 1990s. Coetzee is modest about the TV project, though. “It was like a low-budget ‘Baywatch,’ Coetzee said, but added,“the residuals were really good. Meanwhile, Coetzee wrote the halftime music for an international rugby final between South Africa and Australia in 1993, at Ballymore Stadium. The match was significant, as it marked the first tour of a South African team to Australia since 1971, when the former was subjected to a variety of international boy-

cotts due to its apartheid policy. “It was a big event with 35,000 people. I was on the stage there with my band and we performed the song, Coetzee recalled. Coetzee started reaching into America shortly thereafter, in the mid-1990s. He first landed in South Carolina, then Florida, orchestrating music training workshops for community churches, steering them from classical hymns and choirs to more contemporary “kind of rock band style. “I’ve always traveled, I’ve always recorded, and I’ve always led worship in churches. Like those three things have been constant, Coetzee explained. While in the States, Coetzee also wrote and composed a theme song for the RP International Vision Awards in Los Angeles,

However, these days, at 58 years old, Coetzee keeps a bit of a lower profile. He does much of his work from his own recording studio, conveniently located on the second floor of his Watergrass home. The soundproof room is equipped with all sorts of instruments, from guitars to banjos to keyboards, along with various recording hardware and software, nestled into a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. “I don’t know if there’s many home studios like this in Wesley Chapel, Coetzee said with a chuckle. It’s where he goes to work on his next major project — co-writing songs for Netflix original programming, building up an action sequence or a dramatic moment. It’s also where the South African works with local songwriters and musicians of all genres. Developing local talent and maximizing their musical gifts, has become one of his most enjoyable initiatives. He most recently helped record some tracks with Phase III, a Dade City-based folk band that frequently performs live shows at local hot spots like Ukulele Brand’s, Zephyrhills Brewing Company and Prime 19. “I really love to help people that maybe have got something to say with their music, Coetzee said.“I enjoy being able to pour into people and see their results. That’s part of who I am, is really like a coach and a mentor to see the next generation raised up. And, it’s something he foresees doing for years to come in the East Pasco community he and his wife have lived since 2014. “We like Wesley Chapel, he said.“Part of my goal is to help unlock people’s creativity. There’s a huge creative community here in Pasco.

which celebrates some of the most prolific actors, directors and producers in the world. Coetzee would go on to perform at the event for more than a decade, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Josh Groban, Phil Collins, Hans Zimmer and other celebrities. Said Coetzee: “It was a really interesting sort of angle that I had writing songs. I became this sort of songwriter for big themes; I’ve written quite a lot of songs. That he has — mainly through his work with multiple Christian-based record labels. He’s produced more than 150 contemporary Christian and worship albums, including an instrumental jazz album, Reflections, which sold over 300,000 copies worldwide. One of his most noted works came in 1995. That’s when he was hired to produce the first U.S. release of Darlene Zschech’s ‘Shout to the Lord,’ at the time one of the world’s top gospel songs. Being the first person to ever produce the song for the U.S. market, Coetzee calls it his “claim to fame. “It’s kind of helped me get work. I mean, it’s become prestigious, Coetzee said. He also said of the song:“It’s been recorded probably 500 times or more by artists all around the world.‘Shout to the Lord’ it’s kind of like (the Beatles’) ‘Let it Be’ in the world. I mean, it’s the most famous (gospel) song in the world. Over the years, Coetzee has gone on to work with and produce for other big names in the music industry, including Abraham Laboriel, Pedro Eustache and Genesis’ Chester Thompson. “I’ve been involved in a lot of interesting kind of projects over the years, he said. “Sometimes I forget all the things that I’ve done.

Custom orders always welcome!

Allyson Marino, a faculty member at Saint Leo University, will help to teach the new medical humanities program. It will be one of four new majors at Saint Leo University beginning in the fall.

Saint Leo adding four new degree programs By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Saint Leo University will offer four new degree programs, beginning in the fall. It also will expand its existing Bachelor of Arts in English to include a minor in education. The new bachelor’s degrees will include the following majors: • Software Engineering • Data Science • Medical Humanities • Theater “They’re wonderful opportunities for students,” said Dr. Mary Spoto, vice president for academic affairs at the university.“They’re cutting-edge programs, meet employer demands, workforce demands, and they really do prepare students.” The software engineering program is much needed, based on information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Spoto said. Software developer jobs are projected to grow by 24 percent, in the 10-year period between 2016 to 2026, according to bureau statistics. The Bachelor of Science program will be available both online and on campus, with courses in software architecture, design and development. It is also the only new program that will offer a master’s degree. “The graduate program is a 30-credit program and you can complete it in one year, if you’re going full-time,” the vice president added. Data science also will be a Bachelor of Science program, but will only be offered on campus. It will delve into mathematics, statistics, computer science and even psychology, among other fields. The Bachelor of Arts in medical humanities will branch into two divisions: the pre-medical track, and the health and humanities track. The pre-medical option will offer courses such as biology and chemistry, and will be geared to students who may aspire to go on to medical school. Health and humanities, however, will help prepare students looking toward social work, psychology or occupational therapy.

The medical humanities programs will be on campus, only. The Black Box Theatre, on campus, played a role in inspiring the new Bachelor of Arts in Theater. “Once we had that, we knew we had a good, bona fide performance space for students and would be able to launch a theater major,” Spoto said. Besides working on campus theater projects, students will take coursework in acting, directing, production and writing. While not all the new programs will be available online, campus-bound courses will be flexible, as they’re scheduled at various times on weekdays. Saint Leo also has education centers in Tampa, Spring Hill and other areas for those unable to make a long commute. The decision to implement these programs was years in the making. The university went through a program review process, examining whether existing majors were reaching standards to achieve student success. It also analyzed research data to see what careers were flourishing in industry, and surveyed students to determine what jobs appealed to them. Employers from various lines of work were also asked for their feedback. Based on the collected data, these majors were chosen as a good addition to the university. It was also determined that courses for these majors should be incorporated with ‘power skills’ learning. Those skills aim to teach students how to better present themselves for the workforce. That includes enhancing their verbal and writing skills, and helping them to become thoughtful problem solvers. “Those are the skills that employers are telling universities across the country,‘We really want these and we’re not sure we’re getting them from graduates,’” Spoto said. She also noted that “students should pursue what is a genuine interest, because they will perform academically the strongest and have confidence in knowing that all of our programs are preparing [them] for what is to come.”

Culinary Excellence just off the Suncoast

O

ne of the best restaurants in Pasco and north Hillsborough is in a place many would never expect — The Hilton Garden Inn in Lutz, located next to the Suncoast Parkway on State Road 54. “People are always surprised by the outstanding food and service we offer here,” said Robert Scaffedi, who has been executive chef since the hotel opened two years ago. “Everything we make is from scratch — the soups, sauces, stocks and desserts — both for our restaurant as well as our banquet foods,” said Scaffedi. “We have some of the most experienced and talented chefs in all of Tampa Bay, and our skills and passion are evident in everything we prepare and serve.” Assisting Scaffedi in the kitchen are Sous Chef Jay Raskin, who has 26 years in food service, and Pastry Chef Luciano Visentin, who began his career in his native Italy over 35 years ago. “We’re reversing the perception that mid-range hotels have just average food,” said Scaffedi. “Luciano’s pastries are off the charts, and Jay’s vast knowledge and energy are key to our success. We complement each and have created a dream team in our kitchen.” The restaurant’s name, The Garden Grille & Bar, is misleading because it offers extensive menus for breakfast and dinner. Plus, its holiday buffets are an epicurean dream that boast an extensive menu, especially considering its affordable family pricing. The Hilton’s April 21st Easter Brunch is $32.95 for adults, and even includes a complimentary mimosa.

This trio of chefs at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lutz has over 60 years of combined experience. Left to right: Sous Chef Jay Raskin, Executive Chef Robert Scaffedi and Pastry Chef Luciano Visentin.

Pricing for kids between 4 and 12 is just $14.95. Just look at what’s on this festive buffet line. Carving stations of Colorado Leg of Lamb with mint jelly, and Prime Sirloin with Rosemary infused Aujus. Spiral Ham with pineapple glaze, cherrywood bacon, sausage links, mashed and sweet potatoes, grits, made-to-order omelets and eggs, pancakes made on the spot, French toast, homemade muffins and pastries, cheese blintzes, four kinds of juice and coffee. The dessert table includes chocolate-dipped strawberries, guava-stuffed pannacotti, chocolate mouse with raspberries, and Italian cakes. “Everything on our buffet is homemade,” said Scaffedi. “We take the time to make everything from scratch, so we know it is made right.” The Hilton Garden Inn is serving its Easter Buffet from 11 a.m. to 2

EASTER BRUNCH

p.m. Seatings are every half hour, and reservations are recommended. You will also find exquisite offerings on the hotel’s dinner menu, including Fusilli Carbonara, 12 oz. Ribeye Steak, Sticky-Finger Ribs and Citrus Grilled Salmon Bowl. Dinner is served from 5 to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 5 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Pastry Chef Visentin makes all of his deserts, including Mason Jar Chocolate Fudge Cake, Caramel Apply Granny, New York-Style Cheesecake and Rockslide Brownie. “We are very proud that our desserts are all homemade, and not ordered in from the outside,” said Visentin. The daily Breakfast Buffet is also 100 percent from scratch, and includes eggs made to order, pancakes, French Toast, homemade muffins and pastries, grits, breakfast

potatoes, bacon and sausage. Plus, every day the chef creates a special hot item, such as corned beef, cheese blintzes and ham. The Breakfast Buffet is just $10.95 ($5.95 for kids), and includes four kinds of juice and coffee. It is served 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays, and 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. on weekends. It is open to hotel guests and the public. The hotel’s excellent food is one reason it is such a popular venue for weddings, baby and bridal showers, bar mitzvahs, Sweet 16 parties, and other family and business celebrations. The hotel can also provide custom decorations for theme parties and events. “Our banquet facilities accommodate up to 275 people, and we have small private rooms for small groups, for as few as 20 people,” said Lei Rosasio, director of sales. “We also are a popular venue for corporate and executive meetings, because we can provide excellent, high-end menus and superb customer service,” she adds. Some of the exclusive meals Scaffedi’s team prepares for banquets include Benevento Chicken, Filet Mignon with Porcine Sauce, Chicken Saltimbocca and Grouper with Picante Sauce. For Scaffedi and his team, it's the variety of things they prepare in their kitchen that make them enjoy and appreciate their jobs at the Hilton Garden Inn. “We love the variety of foods we get to prepare at the hotel,” said Scaffedi. “The compliments we get from our guests, and their surprise reaction that our food is so good, give us great pride and satisfaction.”

Museum aims to tell Dade City’s story By B.C. Manion

If you go

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When people visit The Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum they’ll not only have a chance to learn about Dade City’s history but also to get to feel — literally — objects that are part of the city’s past. Joy Lynn, director of the museum, said the idea is to give visitors a true hands-on experience. Items on loan to the museum will be kept behind glass, but many of the objects in the collection will be available for guests to pick up and hold. Also, instead of reading all about the items on display, museum staff will share stories about the items with visitors, Lynn said. It’s important that items kept in the collection help reveal Dade City’s history, Lynn said. Objects on display at the museum must be from Dade City proper, not some nearby place, the museum director said. They also need to help provide a glimpse into the city’s history. “Most everything in the building has a story, or some significance that will develop a memory when you leave here,” the museum director said. “If it doesn’t have a significant story — you can buy it at a yard sale, it’s just a piece,” she said. The official ribbon cutting for the train depot museum was on Feb. 14, a date deliberately chosen to signify that history and heritage are at the heart of Dade City, Lynn said. The train depot, where the museum is housed, also has a rich history.

The Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum WHERE: 14206 U.S. 98 Bypass, Dade City WHEN: Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Tuesdays. COST: Suggested $5 donation DETAILS: The museum offers visitors a chance to see artifacts from Dade City and to hear the stories behind them. In addition to visiting the museum, it also is possible to learn about Dade City’s history by taking a walking tour downtown. Those are offered on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. INFO: Call (352) 424-5778, or visit DadeCityHeritageMuseum.org.

The Dade City Heritage and Cultural Museum is housed within the Dade City Atlantic Coast Line Depot. The depot building was built in 1912, to replace an earlier frame structure that had been about a quarter-mile north of the building. It was the first site in Pasco County to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places, according to a plaque on the building.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. It was built in 1912 by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, now known as CSX. Originally, it accommodated freight and passenger traffic. “Designed in a traditional style for southern railroad depots constructed in the late 19th and early 20th century, this building is utilitarian in layout, yet possesses finely crafted structural and ornamental Folk Victorian style details,” according to docu-

ments related to its historic designation. The building’s architectural elements include gable dormers, bay window, wraparound loading platform, and interior finishes, the document says. “Railroad stations served as major community commercial and social centers, linking each of the small towns with the rest of the world. At the turn of the century, therefore, railroads and associated depots play a significant role in the development of central Florida communities, such as

Dade City,” the document adds. “Of the four historic railroad depots that have served Dade City, the Dade City Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Depot is the only one that remains,” the document continues. In addition to the collection at the museum, staff will help tell Dade City’s story through downtown walking tours. The walking tours are offered on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The museum also plans to present a Haunted History walking tour on the first Friday evening of the month, which it held for the first time on April 5. ‘Out & About 2019’ offers fun for the whole family By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

If you go

The Out & About 2019 Expo invites families to find out more about what’s happening locally, and give kids a chance to have some Easter fun. The event, presented by The Laker/Lutz News, is set for April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Plantation Palms Golf Club, 23253 Plantation Palms Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes. “The No. 1 reason why people read The Laker/Lutz News is because they’re looking for things to do locally,” said Diane Kortus, the newspaper’s publisher. The expo will bring that concept to life — with people representing dozens of companies and organizations coming together to give visitors a chance to learn about local options for children and adults, alike. Indoor booths will have representatives providing information about summer camp programs, museums, day trips, restaurants, specialty shops and area businesses. Those visiting also will have a chance to take part in activities, and take home some swag. Outdoors, kids will have a chance to hunt for Easter eggs at 10 a.m. Once they find some eggs, kids will be able to exchange their eggs for “goodie bags” loaded with prizes. But, kids won’t be the only ones having fun searching for eggs. There will be an egg hunt for adults, too, who will also have a chance to win prizes. Other activities will include bowling and hockey games, as well. The Easter Bunny is also expected to hop in, to pose for photos with guests throughout the event.

Out and About 2019 Expo WHERE: Plantation Palms Golf Club, 23253 Plantation Palms Blvd., Land O’ Lakes WHEN: April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. COST: Free DETAILS: An Easter-themed expo will grant guests the opportunity to learn about local attractions and summer camps. Games and egg hunts will be offered, as well as snapshots with the Easter Bunny. INFO: Contact Diane Kortus at (813) 9092800 or at DKortus@LakerLutzNews.com; Jodie Sullivan at (813) 927-2730 or at JodiePitrone@gmail.com.

All of those activities will probably make people hungry, so guests will be able to partake of appetizers and other refreshments, and adult beverages will be available from Tropical Wine Shop. The event is free and so is parking - yet limited. Guests are encouraged to park at the Harvester United Methodist Church at 2432 Collier Parkway in Land O’ Lakes. From there, shuttles will run throughout the event, escorting guests to and from the golf club premises. For additional information, please contact Diane Kortus at (813) 909-2800 or DKortus@LakerLutzNews.com. Jodie Sullivan, event coordinator, can also be contacted at (813) 927-2730 or JodiePitrone@gmail.com.

Four-year-old Brooklyn Holtzman is all smiles as she awaits Easter festivities. Children who find eggs at the Out and About 2019 Expo on April 20 will likely be all smiles, too. Easter and breakfast: Where are the eggs? Hop Into A N

P R O F I L E

Sweet Frog

By Shari Bresin

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

It’s April, which means eggs will begin to make their appearance for Easter egg hunts and Passover Seders. For many cultures and religions, the egg symbolizes the season of spring. Of course, from a food perspective, it’s also associated with breakfast. How did eggs become such a popular breakfast food in the United States? Numerous sources say that advertising and marketing played a role, and that it was originally more about bacon than eggs. According to “The Eater,” before the 1920s,Americans had light breakfasts of usually just a fruit, coffee, and a grain, such as a roll, oatmeal or boxed cereal, which was still relatively new. In the 1920s, a company that produced pork wanted to increase sales, and so they hired public relations expert Edward Bernays, who is considered the pioneer of public relations and marketing. He also happened to be related to Sigmund Freud. Knowing that the mornings weren’t a common time to eat meat, and with the rise of physically demanding jobs, such as factory and farm workers, he knew it was a good marketing opportunity to get people to eat bacon and eggs for a filling breakfast. His strategy? To persuade the company’s physician that a heavier breakfast is better, and to make bacon and eggs the best example of what a heavy breakfast should look like to provide needed energy for the day. The doctor agreed, and Bernays influenced him to spread this message to thousands of other physicians to have them confirm that a heavier breakfast is better. Newspapers starting running headlines about it, and Americans began having heavier breakfasts — with bacon and eggs becoming the biggest breakfast staple. The pork company achieved its goal of increasing sales, thanks to this PR move. Of course today, we may not want or need such a heavy breakfast. But, eggs have stuck around as a symbol of breakfast. Here’s a little nutritional information about eggs. In one large egg, you can find 70 calories, 6 grams of protein, antioxidants, amino acids, and 13 vitamins and minerals, and other nutrients, including vitamin D (important for bone health and immune function), choline (for DNA synthesis) and selenium (good for thyroid health). And, the protein helps us feel full, warding off hunger for longer periods of time. So, if you still feel hungry after having breakfast, consider adding more protein, such as eggs. So, what about cholesterol from eggs? You might have heard of that new study that was released in March that said eggs raise cholesterol. But, there were a few things in that study that should be noted: It looked at six different studies that didn’t look at all aspects of participants’ lifestyles, it was based on people going back several weeks and remembering what food they ate, and it doesn’t directly prove eggs cause high cholesterol, just that there’s an association. Yet other studies show that despite eggs being high in dietary cholesterol (about 186 mg in a large egg), they do not necessarily raise blood cholesterol; more research shows that saturated fat raises blood cholesterol more than dietary cholesterol. And, while there is a little saturated fat in eggs (about 1.5 grams), there are other

A look at a different take to the phrase ‘Easter eggs in a basket.’

Easter Bunny Eggs in a Basket Ingredients • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 2 Tablespoons parsley, minced • Pinch of salt and pepper • 2 Tablespoons olive oil • 1 sourdough baguette, about 24” long • 6 large eggs Directions • Preheat oven to 400° F • Mix the garlic, parsley, salt and pepper with olive oil • Sauté in a small saucepan until garlic is slightly browned • Place baguette on a sheet of foil and roll up the sides to keep bread in place • Cut 6 holes on top of baguette with a small serrated knife, spaced out evenly (make sure hole is wide and deep enough to hold one egg, and don’t cut through the bottom of the bread) • Press down on the bread in the hole to make room for the egg and olive oil mixture • Spoon olive oil mixture into each hole • Crack one egg into each hole • Cover baguette with one large piece of foil to create a “tent” for the first 5 minutes in oven • Open the tent and cook until egg white is set and yolk is firm, between 15 and 20 minutes

If you crave a tasty and healthy treat, and want to support a business based on Christian principles, then it’s time to check out Sweet Frog Premium Frozen Yogurt in Lutz, at the corner of Collier Parkway and State Road 54. Upon entering Sweet Frog, customers known as ‘froggers’ are embraced with vibrant greens and pinks that brighten the store, lift the spirit, and transport customers to a fun “Candy Land” atmosphere. Sweet Frog carries 18 flavors of yogurt, including its combination swirls. Owner Jai Thomas says her most popular flavors are vanilla, chocolate, cake batter, cotton candy and caramel. With the yogurt comes 42 different toppings of fruit, nuts and candy, plus syrups to pour over the top. Maraschino cherries, strawberries, kiwi, pineapple, peanuts, almonds are some of Sweet Frog’s healthiest options, and chocolate chips, caramel cup pieces and a wide selection of candy will sweeten any frozen yogurt creation. “With the health benefits from frozen yogurt, you can indulge a little, with less guilt,” said Mrs. Thomas. Sweet Frog premium yogurt contains active live cultures that aid in digestion, and provides generous amounts of calcium and vitamin B2 that increase metabolism and replenish yeast levels. Sweet Frog makes its frozen yogurt fresh daily in both low- and no-fat flavors. For those with restricted diets, it also makes yogurt with no-sugar, gluten-free and dairyfree.

foods that are much higher in saturated fat, which can negatively impact your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, such as the bacon you had with your eggs. So what should we do? Enjoy eggs in moderation. Also, consider cutting out the calories from butter or oil by making them hard boiled or poached. If the cholesterol concerns you, you can still enjoy egg whites, since the cholesterol is contained in the yolk. One egg a day for healthy adults is within the current guidelines, but if you want to go by that latest study, limit to three or four eggs per week. More research is needed on egg consumption in diabetics and for those with heart disease.Anyone with those health concerns should talk with their doctor or dietitian.

“We have a suggestion box here, so I get an idea of what flavors and toppings people want,” said Mrs. Thomas. Sweet Frog prides itself on its Christian principles. The word “FROG” in its name is an acronym for “Fully Rely On God.” To give back to the community, Sweet Frog sponsors schools, collaborates with teachers through its Leap Forward program, and offers Scouts ways to earn merit badges through its Groups and Troops program. Sweet Frog also helps charities raise money by offering gift card fundraisers and benefit nights, allowing nonprofits to earn back up to 25 percent of sales. “We want people to know how much Sweet Frog can do for the community,” Mrs. Thomas said. “Our staff is friendly, the store is clean, and most people come back again and again. They tell their friends, and that’s the way most people learn about us.” Regular Sweet Frog customers join its loyalty program to receive 10 percent off their entire order. On their 10th visit, they get a free cup of yogurt up to $5 in value, as well as a free cup on their birthday. Sweet Frog will soon be adding catering, and recently added smoothies with optional protein. The survey tool was developed by the National Research Center (NRC) and has been administered in other places around the country. Data returned from the survey of local residents will be benchmarked against other communities nationwide. The survey covers numerous issues, including questions regarding access to food, transportation and affordable housing. “Every zip code in both counties is going to be covered,”Winter said. “We’re seeing changes in the demographic, in the population. What we need to see is ‘Do we need to do things differently?’ Do

ITALIAN, from page 1A While meetings are based at the Lutz Cheval Golf and Athletic Club, members occasionally go out for social gatherings. This includes dining at Italian restaurants. They also host holiday functions, such as the Columbus Day event and a Christmas cookie exchange. But, the club goes beyond building friendships and socializing. It also finds ways to give back to the community. Members raise funds by volunteering their time doing customer service for the New York Yankees’ spring training at George Steinbrenner stadium in Tampa. With about 20 club members on staff each game, they help to distribute memorabilia and souvenirs. “We like doing the team store – selling the goods,” Giordano explained.“Last year, we made $20,000.” With those funds, they contributed to

The spouse used to be, Anne Marie Winter and still is, the primary caregiver for their loved one. But, more and more, seniors are living longer and their children are taking care of them. “How do we address the needs of those caregivers? Do we need more adult daycare programs, for respite, so you can drop off mom or dad when you go to work and they have a safe place where they will continue to be intellectually stimulated and provided with a good hot meal?”Winter said. The survey is intended to yield information that will guide future efforts, Winter said. “We want our future planning to be data driven, and we feel that this survey will be an important component in that,” she said.

the charities ALS Association of Florida, Guiding Light and Make a Wish. The club also places emphasis on higher education for high school students. A portion of collected funds goes toward as many as five scholarships - $1,000 each. The club sets criteria for what makes students eligible - foremost, being a family member of someone within the organization. Mostly made up of older generations, the club is trying to attract younger members. One of the club’s future plans involves inviting students from Steinbrenner High School’s Italian club, in Lutz, to their meetings. Building membership will help the club sustain itself and will help it do more charitable work, as well, Giordano said. The club welcomes new members, he said. “Come to a meeting; [we would] love to have you,” Giordano said. For meeting dates or additional information, visit ItalianAmericanSocialClubTampa.com.

card details by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing scammers often send emails or texts posing as a bank or financial institution, to try and bait users into providing their bank account information or click links or attachments that then download malicious software. He pointed out financial institutions never ask for any personal or account information, via email, unsolicited phone calls or text messages. To protect against phishing, the speaker advised users to do their due diligence before opening and responding to any solicited emails or text messages. Securing and frequently changing passwords is another way to reduce risks. Said Pepenella: “Make sure you know what you’re opening. Make sure you know what you’re clicking on. If you’re not 100 percent sure on who you’re receiving this information from, don’t click on it.” The same goes for accepting friend and follower requests, and messages from strangers on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, he said. “If you don’t know them, don’t accept them as a friend,” he advised. The speaker mentioned that even the Nigerian scam is still prevalent and has victimized people locally.“It is happening,” he said. These type of scams involve someone overseas offering a share in a large sum of money or a payment on the condition you help them to transfer money out of their country. While these scams originated in Nigeria, they now come from all over the world. Stolen money is rarely recovered in these cases, Pepenella said. He explained:“It’s not uncommon for us today to get complaints from citizens,‘Hey, my life savings is gone.’We find out they became a victim of a Nigerian scam. All a sudden they got an email, the scammer gains the trust of the person…and they just tug on the heartstrings. “Unfortunately, once that money leaves this country and leaves our borders, we have no jurisdiction over it,” he explained. The speaker also touched on some alarming figures related to online child sexual solicitation and exploitation. Reported complaints of suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has increased by more than 10 million nationwide in the past two years alone, he said. He surmised the rise in tips to NCMEC is partially explained by the recent proliferation of family plans from cellphone carriers.

Pasco Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Sam Pepenella was the featured speaker during a recent East Pasco Networking Group meeting. Pepenella supervises the agency’s cyber and computer forensic investigations unit.

As a result, the number of digital devices have skyrocketed— and, that, combined with a lack of oversight from parents when it comes to technology, gives youth unfettered access to smartphones, tablets and computers. The law enforcement official went on to explain that online predators will communicate with adolescents through the chat feature in Xbox and PlayStation video games. The predators try to develop a relationship with youths, and attempt to gain their trust and confidence with the promise of gifts and money. From there, Pepenella said, offenders begin a “grooming” process over a period of time, coaxing children to take and send sexually explicit photos and videos of themselves via cellphone. The Pasco Sheriff’s cyber investigations unit has found children as young as age 9 who were sexually solicited by online predators, Pepenella said. Many of the offenders are in another state, he said. Said Pepenella,“Unfortunately, in a lot of those cases, they happen out of the area. They might happen in Missouri or New York or California. What we do is put as much of the case together as possible and ship it off to that jurisdiction.” Meanwhile, Pepenella urged parents to limit their children’s screen time, use parental controls on digital devices and have access to all passwords. “Be nosy about what your kids are doing, and do not allow that device out of your sight,” Pepenella said.

Sunlake sweeps conference track championships By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

F

or the second straight year, the Sunlake High track and field program reigned supreme at the Sunshine Athletic Conference (SAC) Eastside championship meet, as its boys and girls teams earned firstplace overall finishes to best six other east Pasco high schools. The Sunlake boys team tallied 189 points, comfortably ahead of second place Wiregrass Ranch (101) and third place Land O’ Lakes (94.5). The Sunlake girls team registered 253.5 points, more than doubling the point totals of both Wiregrass Ranch and Land O’ Lakes, who tied for second with 125 points. Cypress Creek, Pasco,Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills also participated in the April 3 meet at Cypress Creek Middle High School in Wesley Chapel. Both Seahawks squads combined to place first in 18 of the 34 events. That included a near sweep of middle and long distance events, which encompasses the 4x800 relay, 800-meter, 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs. Land O’ Lakes senior Natalie Abernathy was the lone non-Sunlake distance runner to win an event, placing first in the girls 3200-meter, clocking 11:46.60. The feats by many of Sunlake’s distance runners shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering the success of the school’s cross-country teams this past fall.At the 2018 FHSAA Class 3A state championships in Tallahassee, the Seahawks boys team finished fourth overall and the girls placed 10th. Grueling summer and fall workouts for cross-country hence laid the groundwork for track season, Sunlake distance coach Randal Reeves said. “We kind of knew we were going to be out front,” Reeves said of the conference meet. “They’ve been working their butts off.” Sunlake junior distance runner Liina Winborn turned in one of the more noteworthy meet performances. She took first place — and set personal bests — in both the girls 1600-meter (5:09.25) and 800-meter (2:27.35). She opted not to compete the 3200-meter run, though she was seeded No. 2 entering the event. Winborn’s mark in the 1600-meter was particularly eye-opening — a whopping 21 seconds quicker than second-place finisher, Abernathy (5:30.49), a two-time SAC East Track Athlete of the Year. “I feel really great because I PR’d and I tried my best, and I had a lot of great supporters out here,”Winborn said of her meet results. “I want to do my best every race. I don’t really have a specific time in mind. I just set my goals high to where they can be achievable.” Winborn has picked up right where she left off in the fall, where she finished sixth in the Class 3A cross country state meet. Established as one the state’s top distance runners, Winborn is receiving looks from “quite a few” NCAA Division I programs, her coach said. “Overall, as a runner, she’s probably top 10 in the state, performance-wise,” Reeves said.

Donte Sol, running for Wesley Chapel High School, is in the lead during the boys 400meter dash.

Her achievements — in track and crosscountry — don’t come by accident. Reeves said the distance runner has never missed a practice — even in times when she’s been sick. The coach added Winborn also makes it a point to train alongside the top distance runners on the boys team. “She is a coach’s dream,” Reeves said.“She does everything I ask of her — and asks for more. Her dedication really says it all. She puts it all out there, and she’s a leader in that regard.”

Special needs youths have a chance to shine By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

W

ith stage lights glaring down, Jaden Figueroa enthusiastically runs through his lines during a rehearsal for Aladdin Jr. There’s no hint that this is the 12-yearold’s first experience of acting in a play. The young actor was among a cast of three dozen special needs youth taking part in the play — based on the popular Disney film — at the University Area Cultural Development Center in Tampa. The New Tampa Players production’s performances of the play are over. They were held April 5 to April 7. But, the value of the experience for these young actors goes far beyond the applause received during the public performances. They’re also getting a chance to learn about acting and find out about the work involved to pull off a successful show. Nora Paine, director of Aladdin Jr., said the aim is to help those who are involved with the play to develop their skills. “We’re looking at the things they do well,” Paine said.“We’re looking at the things that make them happy and they’re excited to do.” The casting became possible through a recent merger of the New Tampa Players and The Penguin Project, a nationwide theater program that casts youth with developmental disabilities to be a part of stage performances. As of last year,Tampa was the first city in Florida where The Penguin Project added a new branch. Paine, who also is president of New Tampa Players, spread the word to special needs schools and organizations – which brought new talent to the stage. Jaden initially tried out for the role of the Genie. The casting director, however, had a more prominent role in mind for him – Aladdin. “I didn’t try out (for Aladdin), they just said that they wanted me to be this part,” the Land O’ Lakes resident recalled. Taking on the lead role was a good experience, and fun, he said. His dad attended the April 1 rehearsal. “I think all the kids are doing great,” Ozias Figueroa said, noting he thinks it has been a beneficial experience for his son.“He started to see the hard work you have to put in.” The actors aren’t the only ones involved in the production. Each actor is accompanied on stage by a mentor who is there to help the actor memorize lines, as well as song and dance routines. From the first rehearsal to the last stage performance, mentors are ready to whisper lines or flash a cue card in case actors forget lines. In the University Area gymnasium, actors and mentors stood side by side to practice singing routines. Brad Roberts, the singing coach, guided the cast through a range of high to low pitch drills to warm up their voices. “We’re also looking at the relationship between the mentors and the young artists so we can find those matching pairs,” Paine noted. One good match was found when Marian Storvik partnered with Zoe DeJoseph. “Getting to work with her and having

fun, encouraging her to do the best she can – it’s honestly been a blessing,” said Storvik, who is a mentor. DeJoseph, who is 18, said she was thrilled to be selected to perform as Princess Jasmine, a leading role. Unlike some cast members, though, she is no stranger to stage work. She’s been involved in theater performances since the ninth grade, and said she’s been singing for as long as she can remember. Even with all of that experience, she said she could barely contain her joy when she was asked to play Jasmine. “I was happy that I got a role that is major,” the Wesley Chapel resident said.“It’s

kind of nerve-wrecking, but also really awesome to play a princess.” The dress rehearsal provided a glimpse of what these actors would be presenting during the public performances. As the stage lights brighten for the first scene, the background art of the fictional city Agrabah, becomes visible and the Genie emerges. Performed by Connor Olsen, the Genie sings “Arabian Nights” with a prominent voice that amplifies the stage. The 17-year-old’s love for singing is apparent. Olsen also came to the role after previous theater experience. His mentor, Olivia Carr, also is an accom-

plished young performer, who played the lead role in the play,“Violet,” last year. As Olsen’s mentor, the Lutz resident explained her task to help memorize lines, music routines and build her partner’s character. While not a lead this time, Carr said she’s happy to help someone else on stage. Working together helped them form a strong bond. “I’ve had a lot of fun,” Carr said. “We’ve gotten to be really good friends.” The actors also enjoy getting into character, and wearing costumes, Paine said. Behind the stage, rows of costumes hang on a rack ready for the actors to pick them up. “When they could finally put on their costume, look in the mirror and see themselves as the character, it really made a difference,” the director said. At the dress rehearsal, there were parents in the audience — applauding and demonstrating support. The director said she hoped that at the actual performances there would be youths with special needs watching the plays — which might prove particularly inspiring for them. “It’s very important for everyone to be able to see someone on stage that’s like them, so they know they can do this, too,” Paine said.

PROTECT YOUR PETS FROM CANE TOADS

As weather becomes warmer and wetter, people are more likely to encounter amphibians, including non-native cane toads. These toads, also known as bufo toads or marine toads, are poisonous to most animals that try to bite or consume them. This can prove deadly for your dog or cat. A cane toad’s toxin can kill a pet in as little as 15 minutes, without proper treatment. If your pet bites or licks a cane toad, it will likely start acting strangely with frantic or disoriented behavior. It may also have brick-red gums, seizures and foam at the mouth. If symptoms are visible and you believe your pet licked or bit a toad, immediately wash toxins forward out of the mouth using a hose for 10 minutes, being careful not to direct water down the throat. Wipe the gums and tongue with a dish towel to help remove the toad’s milky, white toxins that will stick to your pet’s mouth. Once you have done this, get your pet to a veterinarian as quickly as possible. Keep an eye on pets when they are outside, especially at night when cane toads are most active. To make your property less attractive to cane toads, these tips can help: • Cut grass regularly. • Fill in any holes around structures.

• Trim the underside of shrubs and keep branches off the ground. • Clear away brush piles and remove clutter. • Feed pets indoors when possible. Bring outdoor pet food and water bowls in at night. • Clean up any food scraps from pet bowls or outside tables and grills. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) encourages landowners to kill cane toads on their own property whenever possible. Cane toads are not protected in Florida except by anti-cruelty law and may be removed from private property year-round with landowner permission. Invasive cane toads can closely resemble native southern toads and other species of native amphibians, so proper identification is required. Wear latex, rubber or nitrile gloves to safely handle cane toads. Captured cane toads may not be relocated and released. Homeowners that need assistance removing cane toads from their property can hire a wildlife trapper. To learn more, visit MyFWC.com/Nonnatives.
