By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Dade City teenager Alanis Sophia has come a long way from belting out tunes in local libraries and graduation ceremonies. In fact, she’s headed to Hollywood as a contestant on ABC’s hit television show, “American Idol.” The 19-year-old college student and Pasco eSchool graduate’s first audition was aired on the Feb. 28 season premiere of the

nationally televised music competition show. Performing a rendition of “Anyone,” by Demi Lovato, Sophia wowed the distinguished group of celebrity judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — securing a golden ticket to advance to the next round of the popular competition series watched by millions. Perry, one of the world’s best-selling pop singers, characterized Sophia’s performance this way: “She’s the best we’ve seen today.”

Richie complimented “the purity” of Sophia’s voice and personality during the aired segment, adding the young singer has “huge potential.” The teen vividly recalls how it felt to perform in front of the trio — who are among the most successful and recognizable personalities in the music entertainment industry today. When Wesley Chapel’s Carmen Quiles’ family received a stimulus check from the federal government, her initial reaction was — who can’t use some extra cash during a pandemic? But then, she thought, there are others who need the money more. She turned that generous impulse into action, packing up “Bags of Love” for the homeless — and distributing them in hot spots throughout North Tampa. She packs sausages, cookies, crackers, peanut butter cups, sanitizers, socks, blankets, Band-Aids, ointments and more into her bags. Quiles’ husband, Hector, a retired Navy Captain and former nurse manager of specialty clinics at the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital, had no idea what his wife had in mind when he noticed various supplies being stocked in their garage. When she outlined a plan to help the needy with their excess funds, he was delighted and supportive. “You see the happiness and excitement in people’s eyes and that’s a feeling that’s very satisfying,’’ he said.“We’re not looking for publicity or kudos, but if it could inspire others to help or do something similar, it’s worth shining a light on this. “You can always find people in need. Sometimes, I will be driving and see someone. I wish I had brought a bag in the car to give them. I need to start doing that,” he said. Quiles said her idea has been greeted enthusiastically — sometimes with disbelief. “The first time I was out, a policeman

stopped me and asked,‘What are you doing here?’” Quiles said. “I think he was concerned about safety and my husband was, too. So he comes with me. “You see white people, Black people, Hispanic people. You see males and females, sometimes couples. You never know the circumstance or what has happened. But when you give something and it might be the only thing they eat that day, it’s an overwhelming feeling.’’ Quiles said she returned to an area where she had distributed her gift bags and she noticed a group of people were gathered around, sharing the food. “That gave me a little tear,’’ she said. Quiles and her husband, originally from Puerto Rico, were on active military duty for 30 years. They lived in places such as

The signs sprouting along U.S. 41 — which is also known as Land O’ Lakes Boulevard — are an indication that new development is beginning to take root, on the main artery through Land O’ Lakes and Lutz. New restaurants, a car wash and gas stations are coming. A new coffeehouse and meat shop have opened. A medical center and other developments, are planned, too. None of this is on the same grand scale of the Tampa Premium Outlets or the Cypress Creek Town Center along State Road 56, but something is happening along Land O’ Lakes Boulevard that hasn’t happened in years. New businesses are taking a chance on a long overlooked, heavily traveled highway. “This is great,” said Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore, whose district includes Land O’ Lakes. “As they have begun filling up along State Road 54/56, you’re seeing more happening along U.S. 41.” Much of the new activity on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard extends from Bell Lake Road north toward State Road 52 and a nearly $50 million highway project that passes through Gowers Corner at U.S. 41. For sale signs are plentiful, sites have been cleared and construction is underway — conveying a sense that new commercial projects are on the way, or could be coming soon. This K9 is trained to help rescue people from disasters By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco Sheriff’s Office has added another police dog to its ever-growing K9 Unit — and this one brings a unique set of skills to the job. K9 Maddie — a two-year-old black Labrador Retriever — is the agency’s firstever “live-find” K9.That means the dog has been specially trained to find people missing in natural or other disasters, such as a building collapse or the aftermath of a hurricane. So-called live-find K9s like Maddie must be confident working at a distance from their handlers and sure-footed, with a keen sense of smell, sheriff’s office officials say. Maddie came to the sheriff’s office last May from Maine-based Maranatha Farm Kennels, and began three months of training to pass state certification for search and rescue efforts. Her handler, Deputy Robert Lewis, also has received intense training in rescue operations to best assist the canine when deployed, acquiring fire rescue certifications in ropes, rescue, trench and confined spaces operations. Together, they have continued training almost daily on two of the agency’s FEMA-certified “rubble pile” training facilities, which simulate a variety of scenarios, such as a parking garage or house collapse. Once the duo secures federal certification, the unit will be able to deploy to disasters outside of Florida, if necessary. Lewis, a sheriff’s office employee since 2015, has previous experience as a field training officer. When asked by agency leadership about partnering with a live-find K9, he jumped at the opportunity. “It was very interesting to me,” Lewis said in a video media presentation produced by the sheriff’s office. “It’s a completely different task that no one’s done for the agency yet. Also, the fact that more than likely you’ll get to travel to respond to natural disasters, whether it be a hurricane somewhere else, or out of state.” Lewis also noted:“I always wanted to be a K9 (deputy). I grew up around a lot of dogs for pet purposes and also hunting purposes.” The advanced canine is named in honor of Madison “Maddie” Moore, a River Ridge High School student who passed away unexpectedly in 2017 at the age of 17, before her graduation. She died after a blood clot in her brain caused a massive stroke. Her parents, Ed and Angie Moore, donated funds to the sheriff’s office to make the K9 purchase. Inspired by television shows like Criminal Minds and CSI: Miami, Madison

COURTESY OF PASCO SHERIFF’S OFFICE

K9 Maddie, a 2-year-old black Labrador Retriever, is the Pasco Sheriff’s Office’s first ‘live-find’ K9, meaning it’s specially trained to find people that are missing in natural or other disasters, such as a building collapse or the aftermath of a hurricane. The law enforcement agency now has 31 K9 units.

Ed and Angie Moore contributed funds for the Pasco Sheriff’s Office to acquire its first ‘livefind’ K9. The Moore family made the donation to honor their daughter, Madison, who suddenly passed away in 2017 at the age of 17 from a blood clot. Madison is remembered as an animal lover, who had aspirations of working in forensics. From left: Cpl. Jimmy Hall, Ed Moore, Angie Moore, Deputy Robert Lewis and Forensics Supervisor Sue Miller.

dreamed that she would earn a degree in forensics and become a crime scene investigator. She showed miniature horses, competitively, and was known for her love of animals.

“Madison was a very outgoing kid,” Madison’s father said in the video.“We feel very fortunate…we were able to continue her legacy and put forth something that she was looking forward to in her life. “It means a lot to us. It means even

more that the dog was named after her and it will continue to carry her legacy.” Including K9 Maddie, the sheriff’s office now has 31 K9s, which are funded through community donations and contributions. In addition to live-find capabilities, the sheriff’s office operates K9s certified in narcotics detection, explosives detection, tracking, patrol work, human remains detection and animal assisted therapy. The agency also has K9s assigned to its highway interdiction and SWAT teams. Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco underscored the importance of the agency’s K9 Units, during the video series. “It’s about saving people, protecting our citizens,” the sheriff said.“When somebody’s in need, a child goes missing, a person with Alzheimer’s is lost, we can go out there and search for them. You know, if we have to hunt down a bad person, we find that bad person, but at the same time...the vast majority of our calls for service is to find people, to save people, and that’s what our K9s are out there doing.” On K9 Maddie joining the force, Nocco said:“We’re blessed to have K9 Maddie now. I’m happy to see who she’s going to find in the future.”

Pasco School Board asks for reprieve By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco County School Board has passed a resolution asking for a reprieve from the state’s accountability standards this year, to avoid potential punitive consequences. The board is seeking to avoid any negative outcomes on teachers, students or schools that could occur based on results of the Florida Standards Assessments, known as FSA for short. Specifically, the board approved a resolution that requests the governor and commissioner of education “to provide safe harbor to students, teachers, schools, and districts, by pausing negative consequences of the accountability system based on statewide assessments for the 2020-2021 school year.” The resolution was adopted on March 2, on a 4-0 vote, with Allen Altman, board chairman, absent. The board’s action followed a discussion of the issue on Feb. 16, prompted by concerns raised by board member Alison Crumbley. Crumbley said it wouldn’t be fair to use the FSA results for anything other than a diagnostic tool to identify strengths and weaknesses, because of COVID impacts. Other board members agreed noting teachers shouldn’t be held responsible for testing results, especially for MySchool Online students who had failed to participate. At the same Feb. 16 meeting, Crumbley questioned how school grades could be “considered accurate, during these COVIDrelated times.”

In other action at the March 2 meeting, the board: • Renamed the James Irvin Education Center and Harry Schwettman Education Center. The new names will be the East Pasco Education Academy, James Irvin Campus and the West Pasco Education Academy, Harry Schwettman Campus. These schools will begin offering voluntary placements options with diploma pathways for students. The Harry Schwettman complex will be relocated to the former Hudson Elementary School site. Additionally, the programs at Achieve Center of Pasco will be relocated to these schools. • Superintendent Kurt Browning reported that the Department of Health-Pasco County had agreed to 2,500 doses of vaccine, expected as early as the weekend of March 6 and March 7, to vaccinate school district employees, who are at least 50 years old. Those vaccines are in addition to the 500 second doses for district personnel, scheduled the same weekend. Board member Cynthia Armstrong said she has been vaccinated, and encouraged others to get vaccinated when they can.“It brings you wonderful peace of mind, to go ahead and get the vaccine,” she said. • Don Peace, president of United School Employees of Pasco, announced that both school-related personnel and instruction staff overwhelmingly approved this year’s contracts. The SRP contract passed with 98% approval; instructional passed with 95% approval, he said. Peace thanked the superintendent and the board for their part in the negotiations. “I think that the results show that this was a fair and equitable contract,” Peace said.

Make small adjustments inside and outside your home, to conserve water and avoid excessive water use — it can help save money, too.

Small changes, big difference By Mary Rathman mrathman@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Utilities (PCU) encourages residents to take the time to check inside and outside their homes for ways to conserve water and avoid excess water use. When it comes to saving water and money, small changes can make a big difference. Here are some helpful tips from PCU: • Check for leaks. The Water Research Foundation found that 13% of water used indoors was being lost to household leaks. If the toilet runs or you have to jiggle the handle, more than 180 gallons of water can be lost per hour. • Clean or replace filters in your water softener, pool, refrigerator ice/water dispenser, and under the sink. Filter maintenance helps appliances to run effi-

ciently and reduces the potential for leaks. • Use a spray nozzle to prevent outdoor water loss. When a hose is forgotten and left running, up to 500 gallons of water can be wasted per hour. • Pool covers help to retain water levels and to keep out debris.Water evaporates at the rate of about 1,000 gallons per month from a pool. • Change the batteries in an irrigation system. During a power outage, the battery backup prevents the system from resetting to the factory setting, often programmed to water daily. • Establish the right plants in the right place to decrease the use of water, pesticides and fertilizers. New office space may be coming to Wesley Chapel By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco County Planning Commission has recommended approval of a request that would allow a new professional office district on a 9.1-acre site on the west side of Wesley Chapel Boulevard, about ½ mile north of State Road 54/56. Planning Commissioners voted unanimously on March 5 to recommend the change be approved by the Pasco County Commission, which has final jurisdiction on zoning requests. The applicant for the change is the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Cypress Ridge Professional Center. The office development would include a 70,350-square-foot building and 327 parking spaces, according to a site plan included in the planning commission’s agenda backup materials. The surrounding area is characterized by conservation lands, professional office, commercial, and residential uses. The owner has volunteered a deed restriction to the property that states within 30 days of the county’s request, the owner shall dedicate at no cost to Pasco County, a drainage easement of approximately 15,426 square feet.

This rezoning request is a companion to a request to change the county’s long-range plan to allow office uses on the land. Both the land use and zoning must be approved, in order for the office development to proceed. Both requests have received recommendations for approval from county planners and planning commissioners. In other action, planning commissioners: • Recommended approval for a rezoning to permit a light industrial park on a 5-acre site, on the west side of Old Lakeland Highway, north of Townsend Road. The applicant for the request is BMI LLC.A change also has been requested to the long-range plan, to allow light industrial uses. If the subject rezoning is approved, it cannot take effect until the companion land use change is adopted and the appeal period for that change has ended. • Recommended approval of a request to rezone 10 acres from agricultural land into agricultural-residential, to permit a total of two homes on the two parcels located at 18400 Possom Trot and 18454 Possom Trot. The applicants listed for the request are Robert Wendell Pippin Jr., and Clay Turner Pippin. They have agreed to a deed restriction to allow just one dwelling on each lot, according to county planners.

AdventHealth expands cancer care in Pasco The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

AdventHealth Wesley Chapel has unveiled a 24-bed, inpatient oncology unit, dedicated to the care of cancer patients. The 13,000-square-foot unit has private rooms, to substantially decrease infection risks for cancer patients, according to a news release from the hospital chain. AdventHealth Wesley Chapel also unveiled two new state-of-the-art operating rooms, expanding the hospital’s ability to provide its clinical expertise in surgical care, the release says. “Many of our cancer patients have had to travel outside Pasco County for the specialized care they need, and we’re excited to provide convenient access to that expert care right here in our community,” Erik Wangsness, president and CEO of AdventHealth Wesley Chapel, said in the release.

The addition of the unit also allows the hospital to expand its workforce and hire more nurses, specifically for the care of cancer patients. “AdventHealth has a vision to expand its footprint to provide trusted, innovative cancer care to many of our growing communities,” Elizabeth Hayden, director of oncology for AdventHealth West Florida Division, adds in the release. “Our greater strategy is to build on our connected network of care to provide cancer patients in all of our counties with the access to exceptional cancer care when they need us most.” AdventHealth Wesley Chapel is home to a number of surgical cancer services and screening opportunities for the community and survivorship programs geared toward patients who are post-treatment and in remission, the release says. Hillsborough County Social Services and the Community Action Board again are partnering to offer scholarships up to $5,000 to eligible students. In response to the impact of COVID-19, the program will feature expanded eligibility criteria. The scholarships are awarded to students to help alleviate some of the financial burden of college tuition, so students can focus on furthering their education, not paying bills. The scholarships can be used at trade schools, community colleges or four-year universities. Both first-time students and students returning to school can apply.Applications for the 2021 scholarships will be accepted through March 31. Recipients will be notified in writing prior to the start of the fall semester. Application materials and detailed instructions can be found at tinyurl.com/fyner9md. IDOL, from page 1A perience during a recent phone interview with The Laker/Lutz News. “When I walked into that room, I enter saying,‘Oh, my gosh, I can’t believe I’m actually here,’ because I didn’t expect it. I knew it was coming, but it doesn’t really take you until you’re in front of them, and then they’re like,‘Hey, what’s your name? Sing for us,’ so it kind of still feels a little bit surreal that I even passed. “Not that I don’t believe in myself, but just because of the fact that they’re just these big celebrities with so much success and they have a lot of influence in the industry, and as an artist who’s trying to make it, it’s kind of hard to believe. “It still feels a little surreal. I still pinch myself,” she said. The next step for Sophia is the show’s Hollywood Week, airing March 21. Contestants must pass through three rounds of performances at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, something Sophia acknowledged is “a little hectic, a little crazy.” The young artist initially received an email from a casting director for the show last summer, who invited her to audition. That actually was pre-recorded back in November. The opportunity has been a “dream that came to life,” Sophia said.“Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be in the show.”

NO STRANGER TO FAME

It’s almost as if Sophia was destined to be an artist. The area teen’s mother, Katherine, actually named her after Canadian-American alt-rock singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette. Naturally, Sophia lists Morissette as one of her many influences, stylistically: “You can hear that kind of in my voice because I grew up listening to her, and lyrically, kind of the same.” Sophia’s sound has likewise been shaped listening to classic rock acts like Journey’s Steve Perry and Queen’s Freddie Mercury. “My voice has a lot influence from the ’90s, and the ’80s and the ’70s, but then musically, it’s more of like the modern sound of now,” she said. And, she’s no stranger to the big stage and bright lights. Her first major break came in 2013. Then, at age 12, Sophia was a contestant — and finished runner-up — on Telemundo network’s “La Voz Kids” (The Voice Kids), a Spanish-language singing competition in which kids are chosen because of their vocal talent. Fast-forward to 2017, where Sophia inked a record deal with Big Machine Label Group — believed to be the first Latinx singer to sign with a major country music label. Though no longer with the label, Sophia regularly commuted from Florida to Nashville, working alongside several music professionals, including multi-Grammy Award winning record producer and songwriter Julian Raymond, who has collaborated with Cheap Trick, Glen Campbell, Hank Williams Jr., and Sugarland, among others. Sophia sung background vocals and on stage for those bands including Cheap Trick, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has sold more than 20 million albums. She also recorded more than 100 songs, in some form or another. The myriad opportunities with the label has proved beneficial for her career. “All of those songwriters and producers helped me figure out what type of songs I want to write and kind of guide me into who I actually want to become,” Sophia said.“They gave me the experience that I needed,” she said, noting she had the chance to work with musicians in the studio and to do some cowriting. “I’d never co-written songs until I worked with them, so they gave me all of the experience that I needed, working in the studio and all that,” she said. Sophia also has been featured in numerous commercials over the years, for the likes of Walt Disney and Sea World. She even served as an ambassador for a Visit Florida tourism campaign for which she recorded jingles that have aired all over the world. Sophia has built up quite an online fol-

lowing over this time. Her Facebook page boasts 373,000 followers, while her Instagram page sits at over 87,000. She acknowledges that being in the public eye for so long has given her a bit of an edge in the American Idol competition. “I’ve had experience since I was like 11, so I kind of have an understanding how all of this might play out,” she said.

SMALL TOWN GIRL

Sophia was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but moved with her family to Wesley Chapel around age 5, and then to Dade City a few years after that. Growing up in Pasco, it was always very comfortable because of the fact that it’s a small town and I love small towns. In Puerto Rico, we lived in a small town, so it kind of felt like home away from home,” Sophia said. She still lives in her childhood home in the quaint East Pasco town with her parents and three siblings, and three dogs. She leans heavily on family for advice and comfort — especially now as her fame and music career is poised to skyrocket. “They’re my support system, who I fall back to whenever I’m upset about anything or wherever I’m feeling stressed because I have a lot going on. “They’ve always been supportive, because they don’t care what I do. If I want to do singing, if I want to do acting, if I want to work at a 9-to-5 job, like they don’t care, just as long as I’m happy doing what I love to do, and something passionate, yet stable,” she said. Sophia detailed sacrifices her parents, Carlos and Katherine, have made to help in her pursuit of a career in show business. Her mother quit her job to accompany Sophia on a demanding travel schedule that’s taken her to Nashville, Los Angeles and Miami, among other places. Despite a tight budget, her father has paid for dance classes and music instruments, and makes the effort to travel overnight to catch Sophia’s numerous performances or television interviews. “Anything to make my dreams come true — they would do that,” Sophia said. She also credits Pasco County Schools, and Pasco eSchool — the county’s virtual instructional program — for allowing her to showcase her talents and original songs on various livestreams and other events during her youth. “The support system was actually crazy,” she said.“They had me perform in graduation ceremonies and sing some original stuff on like their websites and livestreams. I really enjoyed that, and they even still ask me if I want to do livestreams.”

SINGER STAYS BUSY

Between working part-time and studying media communications at Full Sail University, the self-described homebody mainly spends the days fine-tuning her craft. She aims to write at least one song every day, to keep her writing skills up to date. She practices singing and dancing choreography in her bedroom, and records covers and other content to post to her social media pages. She also is learning to play guitar and piano. The onset of the coronavirus pandemic has allowed Sophia to focus on her music and online branding, since other activities have been so limited. She’s taken advantage of the time to record videos on YouTube, to join TikTok, to do more songwriting and to record covers. “It kind of helped me grow as an artist,” she said. Being featured on American Idol also has kicked her work ethic into high gear. At the same time, in between her concentrated music regimen and schedule, she makes it a priority to “take a breath”— which can mean hanging out with family and friends, or cuddling with her pets. Beyond aspiring to make it as far as she can on American Idol, she plans to continue to release her own music, which she hopes will connect with people to “change their lives or make them escape from any type of situation that they’re in, just for a couple of minutes.” To learn more about Alanis, visit AlanisSophia.com.

Redstone Commercial is marketing more open land next to the Circle K. Ps & Qs will be fluffing and styling pets from a new doggie day and boarding facility planned for 7495 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., near the community of Connerton. No details are yet available regarding what the new restaurant will look like, or the type of cuisine it will serve. The old restaurant structure has fallen into disrepair, after its closure in 2013. Longtime Land O’ Lakes resident Sandy Graves remembers how popular Rapscallions was, especially among nearby Bell Lake residents. Graves is pleased to see some new development and redevelopment along Land O’

GENEROSITY, from page 1A Orlando, Jacksonville, Virginia Beach and Northern Virginia during the Navy stint. Quiles did volunteer work at most of those stops and that opened her eyes. “I was a nurse before, and I worked at free clinics and soup kitchens,’’ Quiles said. “You would see the same faces. There is great need. “Sometimes, we tend to judge people. You don’t know their situations. Sometimes, people wind up on the streets because things happen. They might lose their jobs. It’s tough out there, especially these days.A lot of people were getting by with two jobs. Now they might not even have one. So they wind up in a situation they never expected.’’

Lakes Boulevard. “It’s nice to see any kind of progress,” Graves said.“I’d love to see more. It’s nice to see a new restaurant.” There’s definitely room for improvement, she added, noting there’s still a lot of Land O’ Lakes that looks “stuck in the ’60s.” Graves looks forward to bicycle trails being built in the future that follow along the old railroad tracks. And the completion of the Ridge Road extension, which will emerge at U.S. 41 across from Connerton, also could help, she said. “It will be a lot easier going east and west in the county. I think things are looking up for Land O’ Lakes, which extends to the outlet mall.” Graves sees positive changes along the northern corridor at the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. County officials and officials from Pasco County Economic Development Council Inc., previously have touted potential economic investment in the area that is likely to result from the development of the K9 Tactical Center/Florida’s Forensic Institute for Research, Security, and Tactics, or F.I.R.S.T., and the Adam Kennedy Memorial Forensics Fields, also known as the body farm. These facilities are expected to attract forensics-related businesses and organizations, as well as national and international visitors to forensics conferences. Road improvements on a northern segment of U.S. 41, plus substantial improvements along State Road 52, also are expected to support new development efforts. And, the development of the Angeline community — along with a planned Pasco County campus of Moffitt Research Center — are expected to have a significant economic impact in Land O’ Lakes. Projects such as those are expected to attract additional commercial development along U.S. 41.

Quiles said she has been conscious of these unfortunate situations. She feels fortunate to offer some help. “This makes me happy,’’ Quiles said. “There’s a lot of help that’s needed. It gives me joy if I can help to make a difference. “I see a smile from them, even though sometimes they might not have teeth.’’ And, that fact has sparked another idea: Quiles wants to explore the potential of finding dental volunteers, who can help by providing cleaning and hygiene. The Wesley Chapel woman would like to keep her program going, and possibly expand it, by organizing additional donations and volunteers. If you are interested in finding out more, Quiles can be reached at miislita100@gmail.com.

Bishop McLaughlin makes history in state title bid By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

hey couldn’t quite win it all, but they got pretty darn close — and they’re primed for another good shot come next season. The Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School varsity boys basketball program’s historic season came to a close in an 85-76 overtime loss against Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian Academy at the FHSAA 3A state championship game at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland on March 5. 2021 FHSAA Class 3A Boys Basketball State Tournament Feb. 18: Clearwater Calvary Christian— region quarterfinals (62-48 win) Feb. 23: Carrollwood Day — region semifinals (84-66 win) Feb. 26: Fort Myers Canterbury — region finals (47-42 win) March 3: Jacksonville Andrew Jackson — state semifinals (79-71 win) March 5: Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian Academy — state championship (85-76 overtime loss)

Forced to play with their junior varsity squad instead, the Hurricanes suffered a major 69-25 defeat — therefore requiring them to navigate the playoff season entirely on the road. But they handled the challenge well, downing Clearwater Calvary Christian (6248), Carrollwood Day (84-66) and Fort Myers Canterbury (47-42) in regionals to advance to the state final four, then beating Jacksonville Andrew Jackson (79-71) in the semifinals before ultimately losing in the championship game.“Our road to states was pretty much on the road,” said Derrick Sharp. Meanwhile, the program faced a strategically built challenging regular season schedule from November to February. This included trips to face large in-state schools like Orlando Dr. Phillips and Punta Gorda Charlotte, as well as premier out-ofstate tournaments like the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where the Hurricanes went up against state powerhouses, including North Carolina’s Greensboro Day School and Ohio’s Archbishop Moeller, among others. The arduous collection of road games and foes was designed to give Hurricanes players a taste of tougher competition and intensity level; the team can expect another rough slate again next season. Said Derrick Sharp: “I didn’t care if we won those games or lost them, I just wanted the guys to get that experience and get battle-tested, and that kind of is what ultimately helped us (in the state tournament), so, that’s definitely what we’re going to look for when we’re setting our schedule (in 2022). He added:“Look at Calvary, they went 177, but all their losses were against tough teams and it made them tougher, and it showed in that fourth quarter where they were down and they came out and kind of punched us in the face, and that’s what we have to learn, that type of toughness if we want to be champions…”

t was one of those days when everyone went home a winner. About 30 athletes even had medals to prove it. They clearly relished their moment in the sun, as they demonstrated their skills in jumping, balancing, running, and kicking a ball during the Special Olympics Showcase at Achievers Day School, in Lutz. Players from the Tampa Bay Tornadoes arena football team were on hand during the Feb. 26 event, to help out with the special track and field events.

Staffers from Achievers Day School — a private school for children with special needs — also were there to offer help or moral support, as the athletes rounded the bases, or ran on the track, or did their bit to shoot a soccer ball or make an athletic move. It was an afternoon that gave these young athletes a chance to put into action the motor skills they’ve been developing all year. And, it wasn’t always easy to tell who was happier — the athletes, or the spectators there cheering on as their favorite athlete showed what he, or she, could do. Five-year-old Alessia Bowman, of Land O’ Lakes, bounces off the soccer netting — after kicking the ball into the goal.

Yara Caceres’ glasses reveal the track and field event she was watching at the Special Olympics. The Land O’ Lakes resident was waiting for her son, Sebastian Ortiz, 13, to round the track.

Three year-old Wyatt Edwards, of Dade City, beams with pride and happiness, while holding the Special Olympics gold medal he just received from ‘Coach' Zack Cimaglia, a kicker for the Tampa Bay Tornadoes professional arena football team.

Fourteen-year-old Savanna Sanders flashes a smile of success, during a ball game at Achievers Day School, on Special Olympics Day. Registered behavioral therapist Payton DeAndre, of Plant City, doubled as a base coach that day. Athletes and staff members make their way around the track during the Special Olympics Showcase, at Achievers Day School, at 18288 U.S. 41 in Lutz. The school is for children with special needs, and on this day, they had a chance to show off skills they’ve been developing through the year.

LONG-NECKED AND LONG-LEGGED

David Pagni, of Wesley Chapel, snapped photos of this wood stork that was flying around the pond at the entrance to Seven Oaks. Wood storks are hefty wading birds with football-shaped bodies perched atop long legs. They fly with their neck and legs outstretched but tend to perch with the neck drawn in, giving them a humpbacked appearance.

INVASIVE REPTILE RULES

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has approved staff recommendations to create new rules to address the importation, breeding and possession of high-risk invasive reptiles, according to a news release.

The approved rule changes specifically address Burmese pythons,Argentine blackand-white tegus, green iguanas, and 13 other high-risk non-native snakes and lizards that pose a threat to Florida’s ecology, economy, and human health and safety. Commissioners also approved the staff recommendation to create a Technical Assistance Group, which will include representatives from the pet industry, environmental groups and other affected parties, to help develop a comprehensive regulatory approach to managing non-native species in Florida. And, the commissioners gave approval to an amendment to extend the time frame for animal owners to come into compliance with outdoor caging requirements. Marbles is enthusiastic If you're in the market for an affectionate, loving pup, Marbles is your guy! His favorite thing is to sit next to his person and be petted. He can sometimes be a little too enthusiastic and could use some work on his manners, like not jumping — but he's just so eager to be loved. This 4-year-old, 65-pound boy enjoys playing with dogs close to his size, but may do best in a home without cats. He also isn't the biggest fan of sharing his toys with other animals. Marbles knows sit, down and shake; will do just about anything for a treat; and loves to go for walks.

Lucky is affectionate Lucky is a calm, quiet guy who is curious and watchful of his surroundings. This 5-year-old becomes very friendly when petted or talked to. He curls his head into your hand for more petting, purring softly, and he'll press his forehead to yours to show his affection. If you're looking for a sweet feline friend to keep you company, this is your ‘Lucky’ day!

At U.S. 41, they can head north traveling toward Hale Road, or

south, traveling toward State Road 54. Those east of the closure, can travel east on Bell Lake Road to Collier Parkway. At Collier Parkway, they can head north to Hale Road, where they can head west on Hale Road to get to U.S. 41. Or, they can head east on Bell Lake Road to Collier Parkway, and then go south on Collier Parkway to get to State Road 54. During the closure, residents will have access to their homes, via various subdivision streets. Also, emergency vehicles will have access. The project that is being completed consists of extensive infrastructure and safety improvements – including road reconstruction, stormwater modifications, curb and sidewalk.

New partnership aims to prepare tomorrow’s workforce By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County Schools has launched a new CTE Career Advisory Council aimed at helping the district’s graduates prepare for the world of work — while, at the same time, giving employers a chance to weigh in on what skills are needed for employees to be successful. The advisory council also aims to give local businesses a chance to help develop the community’s future workforce. Kristine Hensley, a career counselor at Wiregrass Ranch High School and Jennifer Batchelor, a career specialist in the district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) division, explained the new advisory council during a recent breakfast Zoom session, and invited members of the North Tampa Bay Chamber to get involved. The advisory council’s work has the potential to affect thousands of students enrolled in career and technical courses and programs across the district, Batchelor said. “Currently in Pasco County, we have programs of study, or academies, that fit into 13 of the National Career Clusters. Within CTE — Career and Technical Ed — in Pasco County Schools, we’ve got 574 courses that are specific to those programs. “We’ve got 17,000 middle and high school students — over 17,000 middle school and high school students — that are currently enrolled in one of these courses, or programs of study,” she said. Previously, schools had their own advisory councils. This new approach puts the focus on career fields, with the aim to improve the district’s preparation of students, as well as expand their opportunities to get

real-world experiences. Concerns about keeping people safe during COVID has had an impact on opportunities that are currently available, but once things open up, the district hopes that will change, Batchelor said. “We’re going to be looking for experiential learning opportunities. We need our students to get hands-on experience,” said. Besides learning about occupations and jobs, the idea is to get students out to see how what they’re learning plays out in the workplace. “They need to be out there seeing what it’s like in the real world,” Batchelor said. There will be many different ways to get involved — through sharing expertise or providing suggestions on curriculum, to job-shadowing or offering other ways for students to get a real feel for the world of work. “Work-based learning experiences are key for these students,” Batchelor said. Hensley, career specialist at Wiregrass, told the chamber members, via Zoom: “Your involvement will be key to making sure that we are actually aligning what we’re teaching to what all of you need.” Besides inviting chamber members to get involved, both Batchelor and Hensley encouraged them to put out the word to others who might want to get involved. The advisories are career-focused and will help students across the district, rather than at any particular school, Batchelor said. She added:“There are a lot of ways to help these students figure out what they are going to do, once they leave high school.” Those interested in getting involved, or learning more, should contact Pam Willoughby at pwilloug@pasco.k12.fl.us or Jen Batchelor at jbatchel@pasco.k12.fl.us.

USDA conservation program accepting applications The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)— through the Conservation Stewardship Program — helps agricultural producers and forest landowners earn payments for expanding conservation activities while maintaining agricultural production on their land. The Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) also encourages adoption of new technologies and management techniques, according to a news release. The application deadline to participate in the CSP is March 26, for fiscal year 2021. Changes in the 2018 Farm Bill authorizes NRCS to accept new CSP enrollments from now until 2023, and it makes some improvements to the program. These updates include: • NRCS now enrolls eligible applications based on dollars rather than acres. For fiscal 2021, NRCS in Florida can spend up

to $3 million in the program, which covers part of the cost for producers implementing new conservation activities and maintaining their existing activities in all eligible land, such as private and tribal agricultural lands, cropland, rangeland, pastureland, private non-industrial private forestland (NIPF), farmstead and Associated Ag Land. • Higher payment rates are now available for certain conservation activities, including cover crops and resource conserving crop rotations. • The annual payment limitation of $40,000 no longer applies. While applications are accepted throughout the year, interested producers should submit applications to their local NRCS office by the deadline to ensure their applications are considered for 2021 funding. For additional information about CSP, contact your local USDA service center.

Mariano is regional planning council chair The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano has been selected to chair the board for the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, according to a news release. Mariano was selected as chairman of the board for 2021, during the board’s Feb. 8 meeting. The council represents the Tampa Bay region, with its board leadership coming from Manatee, Pinellas and Pasco counties. Mariano, who was first elected to the Pasco County Commission in 2004, is now serving his fourth term on the county board. He has previously served as chairman of the county board and also of regional planning council. Only four elected officials during the regional planning council’s 59-year history have been selected to be board chairman twice, the release says. The regional planning council works with six counties and 21 municipalities as they make long-range plans related to the future of the Tampa Bay region. The council’s work focuses on resiliency, planning for climate change and sea level rise, environmental management, water quality, emergency preparedness planning, protection and restoration of the

Tampa water changes to affect Pebble Creek The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report A Tampa Water Department maintenance project is expected to affect some Hillsborough County water customers, including those living in Pebble Creek, according to a Hillsborough County news release. The Tampa Water Department plans to temporarily change its water disinfection process to chlorine, from March 8 to March 29. The water distributed in Pebble Creek during that period will be converted from chloramine to chlorine disinfection. The system is scheduled to return to chloramine disinfection by March 30, according to the release.

Customers within the affected areas may notice a slight difference in the taste and odor of their drinking water while chlorine is in use. Users of dialysis machines and owners of aquarium fish are advised to seek professional advice to ensure that the pretreatment steps they currently use to remove chloramines will accommodate the scheduled change in water disinfection. Customers with any health questions or concerns are encouraged to contact their health care provider. For additional information, customers may contact Hillsborough County Water Quality at 813- 264-3835 or 813-7445544.
