Impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic have forced businesses to shutter, and others to regroup — but activity continues to hum along at the Cypress Creek Town Center, near Wesley Chapel. Located at Wesley Chapel Boulevard and State Road 56, the outdoor mall features a broad array of shops, restaurants, stores and a hotel on the north side of State Road 56. Pasco County’s COVID-19 cases surpass 10,000 mark By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

As Pasco County’s COVID-19’s positive cases surpassed the 10,000mark, local officials continue to consider their best responses to the threats. The Pasco County Commission and the Pasco County School Board were both scheduled to take up the issue during their meetings on Oct. 20, which occurred after The Laker/Lutz News’ deadline. Pasco County commissioners were expected to hear an update on local COVID-19 conditions, from the health officer for Department of Health-Pasco County, during the board’s morning session. During a September update, Mike Napier, the public health officer for Pasco County told the board he realized there was significant interest on when it would

be appropriate to lift mask mandates and social distancing restrictions. At that time, he told them the best time would be when a vaccine was available, or medication was available to treat it. From a practical standpoint, though, he told commissioners that the positive cases would need to be lower — and he said he would report back in October. Napier also told commissioners that

he’s on regular conference calls with health officers and county officials around the region, and they were leaning toward trying to come up with a regional response to the issue of face coverings. The idea is to come up with a consensus on the numbers and benchmarks to use, and to consult with academics to determine the approach, Napier said. Presumably, the presentation at the board’s Oct. 20 meeting provided an update on those issues. Meanwhile the Pasco County School Board was set to take up the issue of masks and other personal protective equipment during its afternoon workshop on Oct. 20. Board members were expected to consider a proposed rule change that would require mask or face coverings for everyone on a school campus, through the end of the 2020-2021 school, in the interest of protecting the health and welfare of students, staff and visitors. The proposed rule also calls for observing social distancing, washing hands frequently and using other personal pro-

The Pasco County Commission has approved spending $48,000 for an economic impact study related to tourism. During the board’s Oct. 6 meeting, commissioners approved a consulting services agreement with Downs & St. Germain Research Inc. (DSG), to perform the analysis. The company, a market research firm based in Tallahassee, specializes in develop-

ing marketing and strategic recommendations from survey results and focus groups through tourism studies such as visitor tracking, potential visitor research, branding research, event research, return on investment research and other methods, according to agenda backup materials. The consulting company has substantial experience in Florida tourism market research. Commissioners previously approved an agreement with the market research company, known as DSG, on Jan. 23, 2018, to

conduct the county’s first Visitor Profile and Economic Impact Study of Tourism. Since then, the research company has partnered with several events organizations, tourism attractions, venues, and short-term rental accommodations to run face-to-face, phone and online surveys to Pasco County visitors.As a result of these interviews, DSG has been able to profile visitors coming to our destination and quantify the economic impact that the tourism industry brings to See TOURISM, page 11A

Wesley Chapel woman pens children’s book She hopes to set an example for her girls — encouraging them to let their imaginations run wild; pursue their dreams. By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A conversation Jessica Valentin had with her daughter, Isabella, inspired the Wesley Chapel woman to write her first children’s book. Jessica said they were in the car on the way to an appointment, when she was encouraging her daughter to use her writing and drawing skills. To make the conversation more concrete, she asked her daughter what kind of story she would like. Isabella responded: “Mom, I love unicorns.” So, they began brainstorming about a story that would involve the mythical creature, and from that kernel of an idea, Jessica fleshed out the outline of a story. They decided that Jessica would write the story, and Isabella would draw the characters. “It became a family affair,” Jessica said. Kayla, Isabella’s twin sister and the twins’ younger sister, Iliana, suggested names for the other characters in the story, and shared their perspectives. They decided to try to publish the story, and Jessica decided to hire a professional artist to illustrate the book. She selected professional artist Stephanie Richoll to illustrate the book, and the two plan to continue the collaboration on future projects. Jessica’s husband, Anthony “Tony,” a retired New York City police officer, has been a huge supporter, the author said. He’s the one who is covering the costs for the venture. Initially, Jessica had hoped to find a literary agent and a publisher for the project. But, when she wasn’t making any progress, she didn’t want that to be the end of the story. So, she decided to self-publish the book, “Tony and His Mythical Friends,” and is selling the book on Amazon.

Jessica Valentin teamed up with illustrator Stephanie Richoll for the book, ‘Tony and His Mythical Friends.’ Valentin is already working on a second book, in what she hopes will become a series of books.

At one point, the book reached No. 59 on Amazon, in the Children’s Folklore and Myths category, she said. The book tells the tale of a camping trip, where a boy notices a flickering light at a nearby campsite and decides to check it out. He discovers a group of unusual-looking campers. It’s a story that touches on the themes of kindness, inclusion, empathy and friendship. Of course, publishing a book in the time of COVID-19 has its complications. On the one hand, the pandemic gave Jessica time to work on her first book, and another one that’s in progress. On the other hand, book readings she’d hope to give to help promote the book have been put on hold.

Dr. Craven Says Goodbye AFTER 42 YEARS OF CHIROPRACTIC CARE After 42 years of providing chiropractic care to families in Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and the surrounding areas, Dr. Michael Craven has sold his practice. He and his wife, Linda, are planning a months-long, bucket-list journey next summer with their two dogs, traveling out West in their Fifth Wheel RV. “As much as we hate saying goodbye to our patients and community, Linda and I are ready,” said Dr. Craven, who turned 67 in September. “We are looking forward to spending more time with our grandchildren and visiting extended family out of state. Plus, we’re planning on buying that mountain cabin in the woods we’ve always dreamed about.” For the past few weeks Dr. Craven has been introducing patients to the new owner of his practice — Dr. Michael McClure, who has relocated to the area from Pittsburgh. “When I met Dr. McClure, I knew almost immediately that he was a perfect fit,” said Dr. Craven. “His medical experience and philosophy, and how he sincerely cares for patients like they are members of his family, were exactly what I was looking for in a doctor to take over my practice.” Buying a practice like Craven Chiropractic was a longtime dream for Dr. McClure and his wife, Julie. The couple had been wanting to move from Pittsburgh to Florida for several years, to be closer to Dr. McClure’s parents who live in Spring Hill and to get away from the cold.

After talking to Dr. Craven, Dr. McClure quickly surmised the strengths of Craven Chiropractic. “And, the more I got to know Dr. Craven, the more I was amazed at how much we had in common – he was almost a mirror image of myself,” he said. Like Dr. Craven, Dr. McClure is upbeat, high energy, and deeply listens and cares for his patients. “I feel completely confident turning my patients over to him,” said Dr. Craven. Remaining at the practice as office manager is Lori Rivera, who Dr. Craven describes as the best office manager he has ever worked with. “Lori is a huge help to patients with their insurance claims, appointment scheduling and making them feel welcome,” he said. SAYING GOODBYE “When you sell your business, it’s not like you’re selling your house. It’s more like hiring a babysitter, because you are entrusting the person to care for the people very important to you,” said Dr. Craven. “I could not think of a better chiropractor to take my place than Dr. McClure. He not only delivers a great adjustment, but his style and personality are very similar to mine. He is someone who I know will treat you as a friend, and not just a patient,” Dr. Craven wrote his patients when announcing his retirement. Reminiscing about his professional life, Dr. Craven shares that after graduating from Palmer College of

Meanwhile, she’s using social media tools — such Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — to help get the word out about her book. She realizes that she is an unknown author, with much to learn. She’s undaunted. She wants to help children to develop a love for reading, and she hopes this book — and others she has planned, will help make that happen. “They can escape their world or their stress,” Jessica said. Surprisingly, the author did not enjoy reading or writing when she was young. “I wanted something different for my girls,” she said, adding that she frequently read to them when they were small, hoping to help them appreciate the power of stories.

Chiropractic Medicine in 1977, he worked in a group practice in Tampa for five years before opening his solo practice in Land O’ Lakes in 1983. His prior office was in the Village Lakes Shopping Plaza, where he built his practice serving families in Lutz, Land O’Lakes and Wesley Chapel. In 2008, the Cravens built a new office designed specifically for the needs of a modern chiropractic center, just north of the Land O’ Lakes Post Office. “It’s been so much fun and rewarding to see kids and grandchildren of previous patients, who became my patients. We even have a few fourth generations,” said Dr. Craven. Asked what is the biggest change he has seen since he started practicing, he quickly responds the Internet. “Because of Google searches, patients are much more informed today and come prepared with many questions,” Dr. Craven said. “There has also been lots of changes in documentation that consumes so much of a doctor’s time. I am glad to be done with all the regulations, documentation and paperwork.” Biggest technical improvement? “By far, laser therapy. In the last seven years, we’ve seen incredible results with laser therapy in pain reduction, stimulating healing and reducing inflammation at the cellular level. It’s the most dramatic improvement I’ve seen in 42 years of practice,” he said. The couple plans to settle not far from their daughter, Kristin, and three grandsons who live in Dahlonega, Georgia. Two of the boys are in middle school and play football — games their grandparents have only seen once. The Cravens have two other children — son Michael, a mechanical engineer in Oviedo, and daughter Lacey in Tampa, a mother of three and foster parent. The Cravens have six grandchildren who have always been an important focus in their lives It is apparent that retiring was not an easy decision for Dr. Craven, who loves being a chiropractor today as much as he did when he first started out. “It has been tremendously rewarding to enjoy what you do and put down such deep roots in a community,” said Dr. Craven. “Knowing our practice has helped many people and made a difference in their lives has been very fulfilling. It will be difficult to leave a community that has given so much to me and my family.”

She has big ideas for where she wants to take her writing. “I want to reach more kids. I’m just at the beginning,” the author said. She acknowledges achieving her goals will take time and won’t be easy. “You always start at the bottom. No one really starts at the top,” she said. Even if her books never become No. 1 bestsellers, she thinks her efforts are worthwhile. “It’s a love letter to my kids,” the author said. ABOUT DR. MCCLURE Dr. McClure and his wife, Julie, almost made the move to Florida three years ago, and actually explored Land O’ Lakes back then and loved the community, but could not find a practice that fit with their goals. “It was actually my mother who saw the listing for Craven Chiropractic. When she called me about the opportunity, I said to my wife, ‘Oh My God, Julie, there is a practice in Land O’ Lakes that seems perfect for us.’” Dr. McClure wanted a single-chiropractor office that he could expand into new areas, including weight loss and sports injuries. He has a CCSP Certification in sport injuries, and in 2009-2010 was a staff chiropractor for the PGA Tour in New York State. With his varied background, Dr. McClure is changing the name of the practice to Lakes Chiropractic and Wellness. Dr. McClure comes from a large practice in Pittsburgh with two offices and five chiropractors, where he was a majority partner for the past 17 years. “While I loved my practice and patients in Pittsburgh, I wanted to be out on my own.” He made the decision to focus on finding a Florida practice to buy this past spring during a snowstorm. “I’ll never forget the day because it was Cinque de Mayo — May 5, and I was so tired of the snow and cold,” said Dr. McClure. Once he connected with Dr. Craven, things moved quickly, and the McClure family relocated to Land O’ Lakes this summer, buying a home in Lakeshore Ranch, a subdivision less than 10 minutes from his new office on U.S. 41 in Black Lake Professional Office Park. The McClures quickly got their children involved in local sports —7-year-old Camden is a goalie for the Tampa Bay Crunch youth hockey team in Wesley Chapel, and 9-year-old Daniella competes at Florida Elite Swimming Club in Land O’ Lakes. The past few months have been a whirlwind for the McClure family as they get settled. “The community has been so welcoming and we are thrilled to be here,” said Dr. McClure. “It’s exciting to be starting a new chapter in our lives — both professionally and personally.”

A cancer diagnosis has forced the retirement of one of the Zephyrhills Police Department’s police dogs. It was a somber moment inside the Zephyrhills City Hall chambers when Zephyrhills Police Chief Derek Brewer on Oct. 12 officially retired 4-year-old K9 Oscar, amid what he called “an aggressive form of cancer, which is quickly spreading.” The more technical term of K9 Oscar’s cancer is hemangiosarcoma, whereby malignant tumors are derived from the cells lining blood vessels. “Unfortunately, he’s starting to exhibit signs of rapid decline in his health, and at this time we think it’s best for him to retire,” said Brewer, who was noticeably choked up. With the retirement, ownership and care of the dog has been transferred from the city to his handler, Officer Morgan Upchurch. plus years completed 163 narcotics searches (yielding 134 findings) and 86 arrests. In those findings, K9 Oscar recovered methamphetamines, opiates, heroin, cocaine, fentanyl and other prescription pills. “His value to us is going to be wellmissed,” Brewer said.“I just want to tell you how much Oscar has meant to all of us, and none more than Morgan (Upchurch), and it’s a shame that he’s only 4 years old, and already suffering these types of issues, and we’re going to miss him a lot.” The law enforcement agency operates with three police canines, with a long-term goal of working with four. The police chief later told The Laker/Lutz the agency plans to find K9 Oscar’s replacement “as soon as possible,” but added there’s not yet a set timetable “because many factors go into purchasing a dog.” A slew of law enforcement officials and K9 units attended the retirement proceedings as a show of support for the Zephyrhills Police K9 team. A video tribute of K9 Oscar also was played for the audience at the meeting. “It’s heartbreaking that such a young dog has to go through this,” said Zephyrhills City Council President Charles Proctor.“My heart goes out to Officer Upchurch. I can’t imagine. Having to put down one of our beloved dogs is always incredibly hard, so my heart goes out to him and the entire police department for their loss.”

Community input sought on strategic plan The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Pasco County is embarking on its fiveyear strategic plan and is seeking feedback from its stakeholders and the public in general to help shape the plan. The county had planned to hold SWOT — Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats — analysis sessions before the COVID-19 pandemic put a halt to its plans, and now it is reviving the effort, according to a Pasco County news release. A series of community meetings will be held to solicit feedback and ideas.The first session is set for Oct. 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Cooperative Extension Office, at 36702 State Road 52 in Dade City. The Pasco County Commission is seeking input on these topics: • Identifying Pasco’s competitive advantages in the Tampa Bay region • Exploring opportunities for increased levels of service • Preparing Pasco County for the next five years of growth • Identifying potential challenges

• Improving operations and service delivery to the community The SWOT strategic planning tool helps to clarify and summarize key internal and external issues and opportunities that affect Pasco County. By conducting these sessions, the county is seeking to gain a better understanding of Pasco’s unique assets and competitive positioning in the Tampa Bay region, according to the news release. This process will help develop the strategic plan — in areas related to capacity for growth, as well as cultural, economic, technological, intellectual and physical assets to promote Pasco County’s economic vitality. Preregistration is required, face masks are required and social distancing guideline will be followed. Several virtual sessions will be offered for those who prefer not to participate in person. STATE COLLEGE GETS GRANT Pasco-Hernando State College has been awarded a $449,311 grant through the CARES Act Governorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Rapid Credentialing Program. The joint venture with the Florida Department of Education as a new workforce education initiative is to raise awareness of short-term career and technical education programs. The rapid-credentialing programs will provide Floridians the opportunity to complete curriculum in 18 weeks or less, aiding in accelerated recovery for residents and the economy. The college will use the grant to launch training in the areas of manufacturing, welding, health, informational technology/cybersecurity/ unmanned vehicles/drones, real estate, and more. The school also will award scholarship opportunities to cover tuition and materials for qualified applicants. ‘We know COVID-19 is highly infectious and we know it can stay longer in the air, like when a smoker leaves the room, but you can still smell the smoke,’ said Rafael Rosado-Ortiz, an associate professor of health care management in Saint Leo University.

Brandy Policita, an instructor of health and wellness at Saint Leo University, said there has been considerable research on the harmful effects of technology on children, but some of those factors are coming into play for adults in the workplace, too.

‘If an employee comes to work and has symptoms or if they become ill during the workday, obviously the person should be sent home,’ Kathleen Van Eerden said. ‘But, it could also involve making sure they don’t use public transportation, rideshare or taxi that would put others at risk,’ said Eerden, an associate dean in Saint Leo’s College of Health Professions.

‘Many of us are working at home and not going out as much as we did. For employees, this can create stress, anxiety and loneliness,’ said Sheri Bias, a Saint Leo University associate professor.

The COVID-19 virus era has changed the American workplace in the short term — and maybe in the long term, too. Safety precautions are paramount. Many employees are working remotely with new equipment, and a different process, overall. The upside, of course, is skipping the commute, but a recent Saint Leo University webinar — “Workplace Reimagined/Human Capital and the Return to the Workplace’’ — pointed out unintended consequences that could extract a huge toll on productivity, the human connection and mental wellness, too. “Most businesses had a contingency plan based on natural disasters, such as hurricanes, but based on the duration and magnitude of this pandemic, many businesses were not ready for something like this,’’ said Sheri Bias, a Saint Leo associate professor with a deep background in human resources.“Now that employees are re-entering the workplace, consideration must be given to a lot of different measures. “Employers must be cognizant of continuity and the impact on people.They need to understand wellness from a mental standpoint. And, they must understand mental health concerns as they relate to new work demands.’’ Bias said World Health Organization (WHO) research indicates that for every dollar invested by a company in mental wellness, a $4 return can be expected through improved employee health and wellness.

“Employees are juggling multiple things during this pandemic,’’ Bias said.“They may have their own health concerns.They may be dealing with elder care or helping their children with a new online environment at school. And, this is all while balancing their own workload. “Many of us are working at home and not going out as much as we did. For employees, this can create stress, anxiety and loneliness. There’s Zoom (video conferencing) burnout. From an organizational leadership standpoint, you must show you care. Pick up the phone. Reach out. Ask what you can do for the employee.Those type of gestures can be resounding. It’s establishing that personal connection and, in times like these, that is so very important.’’ Brandy Policita, Saint Leo’s Instructor of Health and Wellness who was a corporate wellness manager for three Fortune 500 companies, said a new term has emerged in her field. Digital wellness. “Before the pandemic, we were already getting a mass amount of emails and texts,’’ Policita said.“Now, communication has gone through the ceiling. The manner of consumption has changed. We’re not engaging. We are numb to it all. Distraction can come into play.’’ Policita said there has been considerable research on the harmful effects of technology on children, but some of those factors are coming into play for adults in the workplace. “The migration to mobile has been going on quite some time, and we like our mobility,’’ Policita said. “But, as we migrate away

from the office space, the lines have been blurred.We thought we were always on before. Now we are really always on. “It’s causing an array of issues.The multitasking tendencies and technology are leading to eyestrain. Most of us don’t blink enough because we’re always on tech.We’re seeing an increase in headaches, the next for physical therapy or occupational therapy, anxiety and depression.This always-on culture is going to affect employees.’’ Policita said technology has created adverse effects that impact focus, engagement, memory and resiliency. She added that multitasking is a myth, leading to feelings of being overwhelmed and the inability to complete job functions.

SO WHAT TO DO? “The goal is to be in the flow in the workplace, in the zone, where it feels effortless with no distraction,’’ Policita said.“It needs to be intentional.You need to be in control and employers need to facilitate that. “We don’t do enough daydreaming, where we reflect and process the day. If we pause now, we probably check our phone. We need harmony and that could mean a digital intervention,” she said. She continued:“Employers and supervisors need to model proper behavior. They need to encourage weekends, vacations, work recovery. You can pause emails at 6 p.m., and turn them back on at 8 a.m.That could be policy. It would show that time away is not only encouraged, it is valued.’’ Beyond technology-related concerns, COVID-19 also has created heightened precaution and preventative health measures in

the workplace. Most of them are related to common sense. “To be in compliance and to protect everyone, it’s social distancing, wearing a face covering, washing your hands, the things we’ve been hearing all along,’’ said Rafael Rosado-Ortiz, an associate professor of health care management in Saint Leo’s Tapia College of Business. “We know COVID-19 is highly infectious and we know it can stay longer in the air, like when a smoker leaves the room, but you can still smell the smoke. You’ve got to do the right things and know things like hand sanitizer is not a substitute for soap and water. You’ve got to routinely clean and disinfect the routinely touched areas. In the classroom, it’s desks and computers. In restaurants, it’s the tables, the door handles, the bathrooms.’’ Kathleen Van Eerden, an associate dean in Saint Leo’s College of Health Professions, said employers must be vigilant. “If an employee comes to work and has symptoms or if they become ill during the workday, obviously the person should be sent home,’’ Van Eerden said. “But, it could also involve making sure they don’t use public transportation, rideshare or taxi that would put others at risk. “You want to follow all the CDC guidelines in terms of when an employee can come back because you don’t want exposure to other employees or customers. It’s just being aware and following through,” she said. Being tuned in to employees — whether at the office or remotely — is part of keeping up with a very different workplace in the era of COVID-19.

The Pioneer Florida Museum and Village, in Dade City, held its annual Scarecrow Festival on Oct. 10. With the purchase of a $5 admission ticket, attendees could participate in games, costume contests and petting zoos, as well as

enjoy watching performances from soccerplaying dogs and a bubble balloon magician. The most popular activity was â&#x20AC;&#x153;Make Your Own Scarecrow,â&#x20AC;? where guests could create life-sized scarecrows by stuffing them with loads of hay. he grand opening celebration of the Sarah Vande Berg Tennis & Wellness Center was serenaded in maybe the most Zephyrhills way possible — with a slew of skydiving parachute landings on the nearly 10-acre property, at 6585 Simons Road. If the Oct. 17 event is any indication — even amid the COVID-19 pandemic — the state-of-the art tennis complex may put the city on the map not unlike how the airborne extreme sport has for decades. Over 400 mask-wearing visitors turned out to get a firsthand look at a finished product five years in the making — accomplished through myriad partnerships between city, state, and private investment and donations. The $4.9 million tennis complex is labeled,“Tampa’s first boutique-style racquet sports and wellness club.” It lives up to the billing through: • 11 regulation-sized outdoor tennis courts (nine clay surface, two hard surface) • Eight outdoor pickleball courts • Four outdoor padel courts • Outdoor multipurpose turf field • The nearly 8,000-square-foot indoor clubhouse, featuring a full-service restaurant/cafe, fitness center, salt room, yoga room, cryotherapy chamber and pro shop Aside from showing off wide-ranging amenities, the grand opening celebration was filled with entertainment and people congregating to partake in music, food, drinks, dancing, giveaways and conversation. The three-hour event was climaxed with the unveiling of a life-size bronze statue of Sarah Vande Berg, making a tennis serve. It overlooks the facility’s exhibition show court. SARAH’S LEGACY LIVES ON The facility opens five years after the tragic death of Sarah Vande Berg, a former Zephyrhills High School district champion and three-time state qualifier who died in an automobile accident in South Carolina at the age of 21, on Oct. 11, 2015. She was a member of the University of South Carolina-Upstate women’s tennis team at the time of her passing.Those closest to her described Sarah as a fierce, but gracious competitor, both on and off the court. She was widely known for her infectious laugh and love for life. It was shortly after Sarah’s death when local real estate developer David Waronker donated the property adjacent to Dean Dairy Road/Eiland Boulevard, to be earmarked for a community tennis facility “to ensure Sarah’s name and legacy would live on.” “We got off easy. All we had to do was donate the land,” said Waronker, humbly minimizing his role. Sarah’s father is longtime Zephyrhills Planning Director Todd Vande Berg. At the ceremony, he expressed his pleas-

ure regarding how the final product shaped out. The tennis center named in his daughter’s honor is a “game-changer” and “raises the bar” for the community, he said. “You know, I’ve been at a lot of facilities throughout the state and I’m not aware of any that compares with what we’ve built here in Zephyrhills,” he said.“I know Sarah’s looking down on us from heaven, smiling, amazed at what we’ve been able to create here.”

A LENGTHY, COLLABORATIVE PROJECT The project was quite an undertaking. The vacant piece of land was bereft of waterlines and powerlines, and had limited access through a dirt road even when a groundbreaking ceremony took place some 15 months ago. The facility originally was expected to open in the spring, but the pandemic, combined with weather issues and other logistical hurdles, pushed back completion. He highlighted: “The emotional journey we experienced, while making sure every detail would be worthy of Sarah’s legacy, and the wide range of friendships that have blossomed through the entirety of this challenging venture.” Added Zephyrhills City Manager Billy Poe: “It has not been a smooth road, but we’re here. It was longer than anticipated, but look where we are.” The city manager described the facility as “the beginning of an exciting future for sports and wellness in Zephyrhills.” He also noted the facility “will serve as an economic driver for our region.” Poe said Zephyrhills is already known for its pure water and skydiving, and now will be known for its tennis, too. Poe went on: “We have a World Series champion in (former New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals pitching coach) David Eiland. We have a Super Bowl champion in (former Green Bay Packers defensive lineman) Ryan Pickett. No pressure, but hopefully we’ll have a Grand Slam champion who can say they got started here.” Sarah Vande Berg Tennis & Wellness Center CEO Pascal Collard, too, served up his experience on the venture, since his management firm partnered with the City of Zephyrhills three-plus years ago. Collard and his team were responsible for leveraging connections and forging partnerships with individuals and organizations to bring aboard some of the facility’s splashier features — such as the salt room, cryotherapy, and restaurant.The city — with the help of a state appropriation and other impact fees — funded the tennis portion of the facility. Collard brings a wealth of tennis experience to the table, having founded 33 academies in his native Belgium, and being the former tennis director at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel and The Merion Cricket Club, in Haverford, Pennsylvania. His coaching includes working with several widely known tennis pros, including Younes El Aynaoui and Martin Verkerk, both of whom coincidentally ranked as high as No. 14 in the ATP Tour rankings back in 2003. Collard had broader and more meaningful aspirations though. One of them was wanting to help create a top-of-the-line public tennis facility in the United States, welcome for all. “I always wanted to create something different and something unique…and we did, and it’s right here,” said Collard. He continued, “Our goal is to create a place of gathering. fter a lifetime of preparation, Olivia Jenkins was ready to fly. She boarded a Cessna 172 Skyhawk — and her instructor stayed on the ground. She took off from Tampa North Flight Center in Lutz on Sept. 23 and flew her pattern, soaring to 1,000 feet, then she touched down flawlessly to begin a run of three landings. Her quirky goal was complete. “I flew a plane solo before I drove a car solo,’’ she explained. Jenkins, 16, has many more goals in mind (including getting her driver’s license — one day). On her birthday — Feb. 10 — she intends to take her last check ride and finalize her private pilot’s license.Then she can fly without restrictions and even take some passengers aboard. She’s a member of Mitchell High School’s Navy ROTC program and will seek a congressional nomination to a military service academy. One day, she hopes to fly for the U.S.Air Force or perhaps fly helicopters for the Army. “I would not put anything past Olivia,’’ said Robert Crews, her flight instructor.“For a 16-year-old, she approaches it so professionally.When you ask her to do something, she does it and she understands it. “You know how 16-year-olds are? They say, ‘Yeah, I got it, I got it.’ Then they don’t have it. When Olivia says she’s got it, she’s got it.” Jenkins, whose family lives in Trinity, has a 3.9 grade-point average. She has honed her skills and training through the North TampaLutz Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, an auxiliary unit of the U.S. Air Force. As a cadet commander, she has taken advantage of the opportunity to participate in orientation flights, where cadets fly with instructors and take the controls themselves, while soaking up knowledge. “Beyond the flight experience, the Civil

Air Patrol has allowed Olivia to build a lot of character and leadership skills, as she has progressed through the ranks,’’ said Rich Jenkins, her father.“I think it has all shown her raw ambition. Whenever we set a goal for her, she has always outperformed that goal. She takes it on and masters it, whether it’s schoolwork or anything else. “But, clearly, she has a passion for flying. And, she had it from a very early age.’’ Jenkins’ father helped with that.As a private pilot himself, he took Olivia on flights when she was still in a car seat. She doesn’t remember much from those early days. But, the father recalls when they were at the top of the old Pier in St. Petersburg. She had a clear view of Albert Whitted Airport. She spotted the landing indicator lights and knew if the planes were coming in too low. Olivia was 4. She attended the Sun ’n Fun Aerospace Expo in Lakeland annually with her father, but her flight interest really took off at age 10, when she participated in the Experimental Aircraft Association (EEA)

Young Eagles program. That’s when she set her goal. She wanted to fly solo before she could drive solo. Mission accomplished. “I just love the feeling of flying,’’ Jenkins said.“I always had an interest, I think, but the Young Eagles experience really showed me what it’s like to be in the air. “I was a little nervous on my first solo flight, but I was prepared. I studied hard and was confident in what I was doing. When I flew the approach nicely and touched down nice and smooth, that was absolutely the best part. It’s like achieving a lifelong dream. I’m excited for what’s ahead,” she said. Jenkins is nothing but prepared. She served an internship last summer in the office of U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, who represents the 12th congressional district in Florida. Jenkins is back in Bilirakis’ office for occasional work, some of which involves helping organize students who are seeking nominations to military service academies. By next

summer, with her connections firmly in place, Jenkins will be seeking her own nomination. She also has maximized her experience with the Civil Air Patrol, taking five orientation flights (almost mini-flight lessons), getting accepted into a summer flight academy and securing most of her Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examinations, the precursor to a private pilot’s license. She has about 13 sessions remaining with Crews, her flight instructor, before the birthday flight that will make things official. If the weather conditions are right, Jenkins can rent a plane at the Tampa North Flight Center for a brief flight. On a whim, she did that recently. It was after-hours, calm and quiet. Taking the plane up was a thrill. The landing was perfect. “The sunset was amazing that night,’’ Jenkins said.“It was just awesome. I think I’m always going to love the feeling. I can’t wait for what’s ahead.’’ Off she goes into the wild blue yonder. She’s ready to fly.

These snakes are common in grasslands, open woodlands and suburban areas. The racer often is found near water where prey is plentiful. A lively daytime predator with excellent vision, it is plain to see how this speedy, agile snake got its name as it quickly hunts down frogs, rodents, lizards, fish, insects and other snakes.

PET PAWS CHANGES TO FLOUNDER FISHERY The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) approved draft changes to the management of Florida’s flounder fishery. Proposals included in the draft rule changes would: • Extend all FWC flounder regulations into federal waters • Increase minimum size limit from 12

The Alliance for Substance Addiction Prevention’s 11th annual National Overdose Prevention and Education (NOPE) Candlelight Vigil will take place on Oct. 22 at 6 p.m., virtually. The emcee for the event once again will be Evan Axelbank of Fox 13 News. The keynote speaker will be Melanie Waxler, Pasco-Hernando State College associate dean, marketing and public relations. Waxler lost her sister to an overdose a few years ago and she will share her story. Hon. Judge Shawn Crane of the Sixth Judicial Court will discuss the Drug Court program and how it is offered to Pasco County residents for treatment, rather than prison time. Captain Toni Roach of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office will talk about the office’s Behavioral Health Intervention Team (BHIT). The event also will feature three breakout sessions focused on education — one for survivors and those in recovery; one on the “Change the Language” campaign; and, one on teaching how to administer overdose-reversing Narcan and where to get if for free. ALZHEIMER’S WALK The Alzheimer’s Association will host its annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 24. HOSPITAL EARNS PLATINUM RECOGNITION Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point has earned platinum-level recognition for its work and dedication in support of organ, eye and tissue donation and public health, while serving on the front lines against the COVID-19 pandemic. Between October 2019 and April 2020, Bayonet Point participated in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration’s Workplace Partnership for Life program. The program challenged hospitals and health care organizations to team up with local organ procurement organizations, in this area LifeLink of Florida, to “let life bloom” by educating hospital staff, patients, visitors and surrounding communities about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation, and by offering the opportunity to register as a donor. LUTZ MAKES FIT CITY LIST BarBend.com, a strength training resource and news outlet, has compiled a comprehensive list of the top fittest cities across Florida, according to a news release. BarBend used data backed by studies based on a variety of factors that was combined to create an overall fitness score out of 100 for each city on the list. Fitness factors in the study include exercise opportunities, access to healthy food, air pollution, drinking water violations, physical inactivity, obesity and smoking, among others. Lutz emerged in the 264th position with an overall fitness score of 75.25. The town was found to have a high rate of exercise opportunities at 920 (per 1,000 people), which suggests that the surrounding environment can play a key role in determining people’s fitness level. Residents who live in neighborhoods with access to grocery stores where fresh fruit and vegetables are offered are more likely to have healthier diets. The climate of Florida also creates a backdrop for outdoor pursuits, such as scenic trails and walks along the coast. Additionally, Lutz was found to have comparatively low levels of air pollution, and low rates of physical inactivity, obesity and smoking. WOMEN’S SERVICES EXPANDED AdventHealth has signed an agreement to acquire Tampa Bay’s leading provider of comprehensive women’s services, Exodus Women’s Center, and its affiliated entities, according to an AdventHealth news release. The agreement includes the purchase, or lease, of all 12 medical office locations in Hillsborough and Polk Counties, as well as an administrative office. Clinical operations under AdventHealth are expected to begin in early 2021, and once final, all Exodus Women’s Center clinical locations will become part of the AdventHealth West Florida Division. The West Florida Division continues to grow its network of care in response to the needs of the communities it serves. The division also recently announced its partnership with Moffitt Cancer Center to expand cancer services in Wesley Chapel, and opened an outpatient imaging center and expanded physician locations in Brandon. In addition, the AdventHealth West Florida Division network of care includes 10 hospitals, four freestanding emergency rooms, one long-term care facility, urgent care centers, express care clinics, mobile mammography services, hundreds of physician practices and a clinically integrated network. Anne M. Cameron Anne M. Cameron, 71, of Land Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Lakes, Florida, passed away on October 12, 2020, at AdventHealth, in Tampa, Florida. A private ceremony will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Cameron residence. Anne was born in Flint, MI to Kenyon and Doris Siebert on August 27, 1949. She graduated from Warren Woods High School in Warren, MI in 1967. She married Craige Cameron on June 15, 1968 in Roseville, MI. She graduated from Virginia Farrell Cosmetology School. She worked as a beautician for 3 years, and then became a cosmetology instructor, for 7 years. She was involved in the altar guild and scripture reader at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lutz, FL. She also volunteered and served as a board member for Christian Social Services. She also served on the Board of Directors for her neighborhood association. Anne was preceded in death by her father and mother, Kenyon and Doris Siebert. Anne is survived by her husband Craige; sister Kristen (Randy) Jehn; sister-in-law Autumn VanLoo; niece Erin (Eric) Soriano, niece Autumn (Randy) Walters, nephew Christopher (Erin) VanLoo; great nephews: Logan Soriano, Cameron (Rachel) Walters, Aiden VanLoo, Connor VanLoo, Nolan VanLoo, great nieces: Megan Soriano, Autumn (Joseph) Liniarski, Randy Marissa (Geoffrey) Kapanka and Natalie VanLoo; seven great-great nephews and four great-great nieces.
