Election supervisors in Pasco and Hillsborough counties plan to expand opportunities to voters in the coming General Election, to make it easier for them to have their voices heard. Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley has announced plans to add more early voting sites for this year’s Presidential Election. The county also will extend the length of the early voting period, according to a

news release from Corley’s office. The changes are being made “in anticipation of increased voter turnout and the inevitable potential for long lines and wait times due to social distancing and CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)-recommended cleaning guidelines,” the release says. The early voting period in Pasco County is Oct. 18 through Oct. 31, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., including weekends. The county also has increased the number of early voting sites. “A longer voting period and a total of 14

locations marks a new high for Pasco County,” the release from Corley’s office reports. “In partnership with Pasco County Administration, we have secured additional sites to include Veterans Memorial Park Gymnasium, J. Ben Harrill Recreation Complex Gymnasium, Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex Gymnasium and Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus,” Corley says, in the release.“The response from Dan Biles, County Administrator, was without See VOTING, page 7A

He decided to announce that the aquarium would be shuttered until May 10. “I caught some flak, as a business leader, from a few folks, saying,‘“We don’t know it will be that long, you’re not providing hope’,” Germann said. But, he knew that he had the option of reopening within 48 hours, if conditions changed. He also wanted to come up with a re-

Construction of the new Starkey K-8 school is well underway, and Pasco County Schools has begun notifying families that may be affected by the boundary changes that will be required to assign students to the school. The school — part of a complex that includes a theater, library and cultural center — is scheduled to open in the 2021-2022 school year. Significant progress has been made on the construction. “I drove by Starkey K-8 the other day and it is just incredible how that building has come up out of the ground,” Superintendent Kurt Browning told Pasco County School Board members at their Sept. 1 meeting. “It is a phenomenal facility,” Browning said.“It’ll be a huge addition to the Starkey Ranch development, so we’re excited about that.” But, whenever a new school opens, the district must draw new boundaries — a process that can sometimes become controversial. Browning told board members that the district is preparing to begin the boundary process for Starkey K-8. “We’ll be communicating with potentially impacted families currently attending Odessa Elementary School, Longleaf Elementary School and River Ridge Middle School, regarding the timeline and the

Like many businesses across the state, The Florida Aquarium was on a roll — before COVID-19 slammed the brakes on the economy, especially the tourism sector. “We had two years of just record attendance and record revenues, and we were growing,” Roger Germann, president and CEO of the nonprofit conservation organization, said, during a Zoom breakfast meeting with the North Tampa Bay Chamber. In mid-March, though, aquarium operations came to a halt. Initially, Germann thought the shutdown would be for two weeks, but it soon be-

Eagle Scout project yields outdoor classroom By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Ashton Offutt was just in fourth grade when he came up with the idea of creating an outdoor classroom — but it wasn’t until he was a high school junior that the idea became reality. Ashton, who is seeking the rank of Eagle Scout, enlisted the help of volunteers and raised money to create an outdoor learning space, with a sunshield, at Claywell Elementary. Ashton said part of the motivation for creating the classroom outdoors is because he knows having that would have benefited him, personally, during his early school years. The Gaither High student estimates it took about 40 hours to plan the project and about 30 to complete the work. He had lots of helpers. Tampa Electric Co. stepped up, donating six 15-foot poles and a crew to help install them. They had planned to use a crane, but that had to be scrapped because the concrete was too thin and the weight of the crane could have cracked it,Ashton explained. So, five grown men worked together to lift and guide the poles, which had to be buried 5 feet into the ground to support the sunshade,Ashton said. The weather-resistant fabric stretches above 12 classroom benches, a dry erase board and a communication board. The communication board is a tool to enable students who can’t speak to convey what they want to say,Ashton said. In addition to the TECO crew, folks from the BPOE Elks Tampa 708 and others pitched

in — for a total of 57 volunteers.Ashton also raised $3,845 to pay for the project. Scouting has been a way of life for Ashton who became a Tiger Scout shortly after finishing kindergarten. He’s now a member of Boy Scout Troop 339, in Lutz. Ashton has a connection to Claywell because he went to school there. To this day, he appreciates the help he received from his tutor, Jenny Paloumpis, who is still a teacher at the Northdale school. Permission for the project at the school came from Claywell Elementary Principal Rob Jones and from the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, said Lynnette Offutt,Ashton’s mom. Besides scouting,Ashton enjoys orienteering with the Gaither High School ROTC program, and operating remote-control cars. He plans to attend college, but isn’t sure which one yet — and he aspires to join the U.S. Army, where he hopes to be part of a bomb squad, working with canines to sniff out explosives.

The Pasco County Planning Commission has recommended approval of a rezoning to allow the construction of an industrial material sorting facility and commercial uses on a 65.71-acre site, in Central Pasco County. Specifically, the rezoning would allow recycling operations in a 500,000-square-foot industrial sorting facility and 150,000 square feet of commercial uses on the site. The new facility would be located on the north side of State Road 52, about 2,400 feet west of U.S. 41, according to Pasco County documents. The current zoning on the land is agriculture, general commercial and light industrial. The new zoning would be for a masterplanned unit development. The request received a recommendation for approval by county planners and was on the Planning Commission’s consent agenda. No one spoke against the request during the Aug. 27 public hearing, and planning commissioners unanimously recommended approval of the request to the Pasco

County Commission. RBR Properties West Florida LLC is the applicant for the rezoning to allow the project known as Paw Materials, according to county documents. Most of the property is currently unimproved, with the exception of some existing structures and a pole barns, from a closed saw mill, abutting State Road 52. The Planning Commission’s recommendation for approval is contingent upon 53 conditions, which include specific hours of operation; regulate noise, spell out types of recycling activities and other uses that are allowed; and specify buffering, fencing and other requirements. The applicant also must meet requirements of environmental agencies and must abide by conditions related to traffic circulation, turn-lanes and other improvements. In the office development portion of the rezoning, the maximum building height shall be 75 feet, and the maximum lot coverage will be 75%, according to the conditions. The request next will be considered by the Pasco County Commission, which makes final zoning and land use decisions.

Parenting in a pandemic is challenging, pediatrician says By Joey Johnston Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Are my kids safe? Is it OK for them to attend school or should they be kept home to learn virtually? What if they get sick? What if I get sick? What if they want a playdate? How can we cope if it seems overwhelming? Parenting already seemed daunting, but parenting during a pandemic? It’s filled with starts and stops, rapidly changing information, anxiety, guilt and exhaustion. Does that sound familiar to you? You’re not alone. Maribelis Perez, a pediatrician at Premier Community HealthCare’s Dade City office, said parents, teachers and caregivers must focus on their physical and emotional health during these challenging times of COVID-19. “As parents, it’s important to get educated about everything that is going on,’’ Perez said during a recent Zoom video teleconference with the public.“Pandemics aren’t new. They have happened before. But, this one has brought everything to our doors. “Prevention is always going to be the key. We have always known that infectious diseases can be prevented by simple measures such as hand-washing. Think about just six months ago, how careless we were. Now, we are washing our hands like our lives depend on it.’’ Hand-washing is a tangible answer.

Maribelis Perez, a pediatrician at Premier Community HealthCare’s Dade City office, offered guidance regarding parenting during a pandemic.

Perez said many parents are searching for solutions when it comes to emotional losses. That is more difficult to define. “We all have been stressed and anxious,’’ Perez said. “This is all very challenging. We need to remind our children they’re not alone with these feelings. We need to normalize that feeling and validate it.We can provide reassur-

If you want to help kids, Kiwanis Club wants you By Joey Johnston Special to The Laker/Lutz News

A new Kiwanis Club in Wesley Chapel is looking for civic-minded people who want to help build leadership-related activities for school-age children. “If I asked you,‘Would you like to be part of an organization that gives all of its money to children and the development of children’s programs,’ how can you say no?’’ said Joe Meyer, a Sarasota-based Kiwanis member who specializes in building and maintaining clubs. The Kiwanis Club has four new Tampa Bay clubs forming, including one in Wesley Chapel. Florida has 240 adult chapters with approximately 6,900 members. In the United States, the organization raises more than $100 million annually and dedicates it to 150,000 community service projects, which translates into 18.5-million service hours. The clubs are involved in all sorts of public service works. They have built all-access playgrounds, restocked libraries, created food pantries, bought medical equipment, hosted diversity fairs, and stuffed backpacks with school supplies. Ed Anderson, a Wesley Chapel realtor and Kiwanis member since 1977, is serving as advisor for the new Wesley Chapel club. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced most of its organizational meetings to be held via Zoom video conferencing, but Anderson is encouraged by the initial response. “Wesley Chapel is such a fast-growing area, one of the fastest-growing places in Florida, that it just seems like a natural to establish a club that could really grow,’’ said Anderson, who has most recently served as secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Carrollwood.“Even though Wesley Chapel is a fairly affluent area, there are still folks who need things. “Once you’re a Kiwanian, it becomes part of your life. Once a Kiwanian, always a Kiwanian. You’re able to impact the community and make a difference. There are many networking groups and business groups. They are great, but their purpose is to build businesses. In Kiwanis, your sole objective is giving back to the community — specifically kids.’’ What are some of the Kiwanis projects? The Terrific Kids bumper stickers, as in “I have a Terrific Kid at Wesley Chapel High School,’’ is a Kiwanis project. The Key Clubs that exist in most high schools, emphasizing leadership, character development and service? That’s Kiwanis.

Kiwanis Club in Wesley Chapel is seeking new members

The BUG (Bring Up Grades) programs that recognize students who raise their grade to an acceptable range and offer certificates, buttons and parties? That’s Kiwanis, too. Kiwanis also is about people such as Alex Dang, a Wiregrass Ranch High School graduate and a University of South Florida freshman who’s majoring in bio-medical sciences. He has designs on medical school and becoming a pediatrician. In his sophomore year at Wiregrass Ranch, Dang joined the Key Club. “The comparison of myself from the beginning of high school compared to now is so dramatic,’’ said Dang, 18. “I’ve learned about social networking, communication skills and public speaking. I was a Key Club board member, so I had to speak and become a leader. “Before, I didn’t really pursue any of those skills. Key Club gave me a push in that direction and really put my life on a different course.’’ Dang has joined the Kiwanis Club of Wesley Chapel. “Wesley Chapel is such a tight-knit community, so I really think a lot of people are going to join and participate in the activities and sponsorships,’’ Dang said. “The best thing about Kiwanis Club is anyone can join, no matter what skill set you have. In fact, it’s even better if you have a different skill set because that makes the club more diverse and strong.’’ Meyer, a membership-building specialist, said all walks of life are welcome. “We get bankers, real estate professionals, insurance people, automotive repair, sales people, retailers, school employees … you name it,’’ Meyer said.“It’s all about getting people to work together and helping children in the community. You have to have a big heart and the desire to help kids. There’s great camaraderie in the club and the rewards are immense.’’ For any men or women interested in the opportunity, the Kiwanis Club of Wesley Chapel’s Facebook page summed it up: “Kids are curious, lovable and hilarious. They are also wild, impatient and vulnerable. Help us look out for kids in Wesley Chapel and around the globe.’’ For more information on the Kiwanis Club of Wesley Chapel, contact Ed Anderson at (813) 841-2773 or ed@edwardanderson.com.

ance and tell them how to be safe, but we can’t control everything.’’ For kids who are employing virtual learning at home, there is some control that parents can utilize, though. “It’s unrealistic to think the kids are going to stare at their screens for hour after hour,’’ Perez said.“There must be some breaks and pauses. They have to be engaged in some activity and movement. Let them dance. Let them stretch. It’s always hard, depending on the setup at home, but there must be some form of down time.’’ Preparation is also important for at-home learning, Perez said. “We’ve all been forced to rethink our daily lives,’’ Perez said.“None of us were necessarily prepared to turn our homes into classrooms. But, if your children are staying home to learn, it really helps to have a stimulating environment, whether it’s a small space or a large space. “They must have the necessary tools for schoolwork without the distraction of televisions and other things. Ideally, they are not in their bedroom or in bed. Those two spaces should be separated. There must be a way to emphasize and prioritize the schoolwork.’’ For children returning to the school campus, there are different issues. “Obviously, people with various conditions, such as respiratory illnesses and diabetes, may be at higher risk, not just (to)

corona, but (to) other viruses, as well,’’ Perez said.“Conversations need to take place with health care providers, and it’s how you feel as a parent, as well. “Schools have been working on solutions for about six months now. They are keeping kids 6 feet apart in the areas where they congregate.A lot are making use of their outdoor spaces. Face coverings and face shields are going to be really important. The hand-washing and using hand sanitizer is also very big. Most schools have escalated their cleaning. I think the proper precautions are being taken. But, of course, it’s still an individual choice for each family, and it’s not an easy choice.’’ Regardless of the school choice, Perez said it’s imperative to have healthy routines. “Daily habits and daily routines are so important,’’ Perez said.“Set up the alarm clock to get the child moving. Have an hour a day where they’re walking outside. Get to bed early and get eight to nine hours of sleep. “Don’t forget the eating habits. When kids are at home, it’s important not to overeat.Try to work on portion control. Drink water most of the time because we often confuse being thirsty for being hungry. Just do all you can to model healthy habits because they are so important in these times. And, know that when you’re feeling anxious or stressed, those are common feelings for everyone. Take a deep breath and know that we will all get through this,” Perez said.

SAINT LEO KEEPS TEST SCORES OPTIONAL

As many high school students are scrambling because of the cancellation of SAT and ACT college admissions testing, Saint Leo University leaders are reassuring students that they still will be able earn a college degree, according to a school news release. Since 2018, Saint Leo has made the SAT/ACT scores fully optional as part of the admissions process for prospective students. The university adopted a holistic approach to admissions and looks at the whole student experience, rather than just their test scores. “With universities across the state of Florida still requiring students to submit standardized test scores for admissions or scholarship purposes, we want to reassure students that they do not need to submit these scores for Saint Leo University,” said Dr. Senthil Kumar, vice president for Strategic Enrollment Management. “We pride ourselves on making a Catholic, private University experience affordable and accessible to students of all backgrounds,” Kumar continued. “During this pandemic, students should not need to be worrying about the potential impact that these tests have on their future.” Instead of test scores, Saint Leo looks at a

high school student’s unweighted GPA; courses taken, including AP, IB, CLEP, and dual-enrollment subjects; and more, when admitting a student. The rigor of a student’s coursework is taken into consideration for additional scholarships. The university focuses on each student’s experience. “We prefer to consider the whole student, not just the numbers,” Kumar said. Many high school students are worried that if they do not take the tests and submit scores, they will not be eligible for scholarships. Kumar said,“If you are delaying sending in your application because you are worried about this, go ahead and send it now, as test scores are not necessary for your application to be reviewed as complete.” Test anxiety plagues many students, while for those with special needs, testing can be especially difficult. Some high school-age students may not be able to afford tutoring sessions, special classes and workbooks, and the tests themselves. Making college admissions testing optional helps Saint Leo welcome a more diverse student body. While many institutions of higher learning are just now dropping the test score requirement, Saint Leo University implemented this approach in order to look at each student as an individual. Applications are being accepted, and scholarships are available for the fall 2021 semester. For more information, please email admissions@saintleo.edu, or call (877) 588622-2009.

FEE ADJUSTMENT MEETING

Pasco-Hernando State College’s (PHSC) District Board of Trustees (DBOT) will consider approving proposed adjusted

course-related fees at its board meeting on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m., at the Spring Hill campus. If the meeting is switched to virtual viewing, details will be available online at PHSC.edu. Fee adjustment proposals are reviewed and approved for DBOT consideration by PHSC’s Council of Academic Affairs, a committee that includes representation by administrators, deans, academic department chairs, program directors, faculty and staff. For details regarding the adjustments, justification for the fees and fee implementation details, visit Policies.phsc.edu/policies-andprocedures/public-disclosure. Questions or concerns about the proposed fees should be directed to the appropriate dean listed on the webpage. Many fee adjustments relate to vendor increases for workforce courses, laboratories, and program testing. Some fees may be covered by financial aid, scholarships and grants. All fees charged by vendors are negotiated by the college, with additional fee increases and decreases expected in the coming academic year.

GRANT WRITING WEBINAR

Saint Leo University will host a free webinar entitled “Grants and COVID-19” on Sept. 18 at noon, through Zoom, for professionals working for human and social service agencies/nonprofits. The guest speaker will be Jenenne Valentino-Bottaro, Ph.D., and instructor at the Saint Leo University Center for Alternative Pathway Programs. Valentino-Bottaro will share strategies that can help grant seekers navigate the process in the current climate and locate pertinent information available now. North Tampa Bay Chamber accepting award nominations The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The North Tampa Bay Chamber has reimagined its annual Celebrating Excellence Awards, in light of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Every year, the awards celebrate businesses in the region, recognizing the people and companies that have demonstrated a unique vision, innovation, and best business practices, according to a chamber news release. This year, the 2020 Celebrating Excellence Awards will honor organizations that have demonstrated commitment and resilience during the past year and which have benefited the community, the release says. “We recognize COVID-19 has affected businesses across our region in a variety of ways, resulting in new innovations and adjustments to business models,” the release says. “As such we have reimagined our Annual Celebrating Excellence Awards. This year the awards ceremony will be held November 12th via a professional production fully streaming with live remotes, live feeds, and celebratory toast.” The North Tampa Bay Chamber prides itself on its 4 Core Values. It will be presenting these awards this year:

PANDEMIC, from page 1A sponsible reopening plan, and to give his 270-member staff a sense of stability in the interim. “It was an investment in my staff. Hey, ‘You’re OK for eight weeks,’” Germann said. “I need to have you looking at the next 24 months, not the next 24 hours.” “I have to invest in my people. I have to invest in making sure that we are strong enough to reopen, and the survivability of The Florida Aquarium is well beyond the next 24 hours — it’s the next 24 years,” he said. By giving them a longer runway, the staff could maintain operations, take care of the animals, and figure out how to safely and successfully reopen, he said. “We worked first with Tampa General Hospital and USF Health,” he said, noting those experts did site visits and helped the aquarium prepare to reopen safely. The health professionals continue to monitor the situation, at least once a month, he added. “We never want to let our guard down. Things change regularly, as you know, in science, especially in this particular case,” Germann said. The shutdown also provided opportunity for introspection: “How do we look at our business model? What are things that we need to change? “As a business leader, you make your decisions. It’s not always the bottom line that’s the focus. I knew that that money we were going to lose during that time — I call it Monopoly money, it is gone,” Germann said. “We’ll probably lose close to $10 million in earned revenue by the time the fiscal year

• Excellence in Integrity Award: Honoring an organization whose demonstrated commitment and resilience during the past year has benefited the community and region • Excellence in Collaboration Award: Honoring an organization that has sought to build bridges and partner with individuals and groups that has strengthened the community and region during the past year • Excellence in Inclusivity Award: Honoring an organization that has demonstrated, through its organizational culture or in service to the community, leadership in diversity and inclusion practice during the past year • Excellence in Innovation Award: Honoring an organization whose demonstrated unique ingenuity during the past year has benefited the community and region In addition to the four Core Value awards, the chamber will be adding a Community Hero(es) Award, which provides a way to highlight some additional individuals — in addition to organizations — who are being honored for their efforts, concern and compassionate response to the pandemic. To find out more about the awards, visit NorthTampaBayChamber.com.

ends at the end of this month, but that certain portion is gone,” he said. Just months before the pandemic, the aquarium launched a $14 million capital campaign. “We said, ‘We’re making no little plans. We’re going to continue to upgrade the facility. We’re going to continue to make sure that it is a facility that you are proud of,” he said. The capital campaign calls for investments, to enable the facility — which has been named by USA Today readers as the No. 2 aquarium in North America — to grow and expand. “These are ideas (in the capital campaign) that are just on hold. They have not gone away by any means. They are just on hold,” Germann said. Now celebrating its 25th year, the aquarium has been working on ways to strengthen connections within the community, Germann said. It’s encouraging locals who haven’t been to the facility in downtown Tampa in awhile, to come check it out. It wants to show off its animals, share the story of its conservation efforts and invite people to enjoy fun experiences there, he said. While the pandemic has presented challenges, Germann is optimistic about the future and eager for the aquarium to continue pursuing its mission. “We were the first aquarium in North America to reopen. We reopened on May 10,” he said. “We were ready to go, and we were ready to contribute — really, truly — back to the mental and emotional health that we needed in this healing process. “We all need to lift each other, and we’re all in this together,” Germann said.

VOTING, from page 1A hesitation and completely in the spirit of being on the same team.” The release also notes that the addition of county sports complexes and gymnasiums will give Pasco voters more options for casting their ballot in-person, and, in terms of size, will accommodate more voters while still social distancing. The Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex Gymnasium will replace the Land O’ Lakes Library. The library, which is next to the recreation complex, has been a well-attended early voting site, the release says. Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer reports that his county has 24 early voting locations — offering convenient options for voters throughout the county. Hillsborough County will begin mailing out vote-by-mail ballots on Sept. 24. Ballots must be return to the supervisor’s office by 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, which is Election Day. Hillsborough also is adding curbside drop-off tents at Latimer’s four offices, which will operate seven days a week, beginning Oct. 1. Early voting in Hillsborough is Oct. 19 through Nov. 1, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

STARKEY, from page 1A process,” Browning said. “Our plan is to open the K-8, as a K-7, its first year, and then become a K-8, in its second year,” Browning said, noting that district staff would be sending out communications in the afternoon. following the board meeting. “I wanted the board to know about it, first,” he said. Watergrass and Wesley Chapel elementary schools also may see some boundary shifts, Browning said, but he added there are no students currently in the areas that would be affected. “Proposed maps will be developed this month and a parent night workshop is planned for Oct. 6, at Odessa Elementary School,” Browning said.“The public hearing for the boundaries proposal is planned for Nov. 17 at 6 p.m., with final school board action on Dec. 1. “We’ll continue to communicate with potentially affected families throughout this process and provide opportunities for feedback. And, this time, we’ll be relying heavily on our ‘Let’s Talk.’” In other news, Deputy Superintendent Ray Gadd shared information regarding the district’s inventory of surplus sites that are available for future construction of schools, as the district grows. There was a time when the district didn’t have any land for future schools,

Gadd said, describing how he would drive around the county in his pickup truck searching for acreages with for sale signs. When he found one, he’d have Chris Williams, the district’s director of planning, check it out. Over time, the district has acquired a number of sites, through purchases and as part of development orders that require sites to be dedicated for schools, as part of development approvals. “We now have very tight procedures for receiving land from developers,” Gadd explained to board members. “We are well-positioned for the future, in terms of building schools and preparing for future growth in this county," Gadd said. School board member Alison Crumbley applauded Gadd and other district staffers who have addressed this issue, noting she remembers when the district faced significant challenges in securing affordable land. Meanwhile, the Pasco County Planning Commission recently took an action that relates to a planned district school site. Planning commissioners voted on Aug. 27 to recommend the school district’s proposed site for the Kirkland Academy of Innovation, on a 104.4-acre site, southeast of the intersection of Curley Road and Kiefer Road. The planned project will consist of two buildings, totaling 228,458 square feet. No one spoke in opposition to the request at the planning commission’s meeting.

Nationally, President Donald Trump has raised questions about the integrity of the vote-by-mail process, although he has said that Florida’s vote-by-mail system is safe and secure. Latimer assured voters that “in Florida, our systems will not allow us to accept more than one ballot from a voter. “A voter’s record is updated to show that a mail ballot has been mailed to them, and updated again when the voted mail ballot has been received and verified. “Poll workers have this information during early voting and Election Day. If a voter has received a vote-by-mail ballot and shows up to vote in person, one of two things happen:“If the ballot has not been received yet, the voter may vote in person and their mail ballot will be canceled. If the mail ballot arrives at the office after they voted in person, the mail ballot will not be accepted. “If that voter’s vote-by-mail ballot has already been received, it is deemed “cast” and they will not be allowed to cast an in-person vote,” Latimer said, via email. etter late than never, and something better than nothing. In typical years, Florida’s high school football season kicks off sometime in August with a preseason game followed by a 10-game regular season schedule. This year isn’t like any other, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) weeks ago gave the OK to begin fall sport tryouts on Aug. 24, with competition beginning Sept. 4, though many programs have elected to take the gridiron on Sept. 11 with a contracted eightgame slate. Locally, prospects are high for some teams, while others hope to use this season as a learning experience for ensuing years. Without further ado, here is a look, a primer, of all the Hillsborough County and Pasco County prep teams in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY Carrollwood Day School Patriots

Coach: Mark Jones (fifth year) Following a winless 2019 campaign, Carrollwood Day School is poised for a major turnaround thanks to a trio of Seffner Christian Academy transfers in senior tight end Michael Trigg, junior defensive tackle Brandon Cleveland and offensive tackle Clay Wedin, plus the addition of defensive tackle Desmond Mamudi, a Steinbrenner High School transfer. All of those players are viewed as high-level Division I talents — most notably Trigg, widely regarded as one of the nation’s top five tight end prospects for the 2021 recruiting class. Meanwhile, Cleveland is a Miami commit; Mamudi, a USF commit; and, Wedin boasts nearly two dozen scholarship offers from the likes of Alabama,Auburn, Ohio State, among others. Size alone should provide a mismatch in the small-school 2A ranks.Trigg is 6-foot-4, 230 pound; Cleveland is 6-foot-4, 250 pounds; Mamudi is 6-foot-3, 310 pounds; and,Wedin is 6-foot-6, 280 pounds.

Freedom High School Patriots

Coach: Christopher Short (second year) Freedom felt significant struggles offensively last year under new head coach Christopher Short, being shutout in half of their contests. Perhaps a roster with 16 seniors and a seemingly manageable schedule will yield more victories this time around.

Gaither High School Cowboys

Coach: Kirk Karsen (fourth year) Gaither looks to reach the playoffs for a fourth straight year and build off its most successful season in school history — a 122 mark and reaching the Class 6A state semifinals. Despite the graduation of stat-stuffing quarterback Tony Bartalo (3,194 passing yards, 50 total touchdowns) and some other standouts, the Cowboys remain loaded with more than a handful of Division I talents. That includes quarterback Kiael Kelly (Ball State commit), lineman Andrew Kilfoyl (USF commit), cornerback Jordan Oladokun (Iowa commit), tailback Ricky Parks (Utah commit), and cornerback Jordan Young (Florida commit), among others. National high school sports website MaxPreps.com tabbed Gaither as the state’s No. 10 team regardless of classification in its 2020 preseason rankings.

Steinbrenner High School Warriors

Coach: Andres Perez (ninth year) Like Gaither, Steinbrenner, too, is coming off its most prolific campaign in program history — going 12-2 and reaching the Class 8A state semifinals. Also like Gaither, the Warriors must pivot its passing game with the graduation of uber-productive quarterback Hunter

Carlson (2,582 passing yards, 35 total touchdowns) and top two wideouts Dean Patterson (58 receptions, 837 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Aidan Bitter (54 receptions, 807 yards, 13 touchdowns). With that, expect the Warriors to rely heavily on a running game paced by Iowa State commit Dean Silas, a 5-foot-7, 170pound senior who tallied 985 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 113 carries (8.7 yards per carry) last season. Also of note, the Warriors feature one of the nation’s top-ranked prep long snappers and punters in junior Griffin Wiltse. He averaged 37.9 yards per punt last season.

PASCO COUNTY Academy at the Lakes Wildcats

Coach: Shawn Brown (sixth year) Academy at the Lakes is seeking its third eight-man state title in four years. After winning back-to-back eight-man state crowns in 2017 and 2018, the Wildcats last season went 6-2 and were eliminated in the first round of the Sunshine State Athletic Conference playoffs. Keeping senior quarterback Jalen Brown — the team’s starter since eighth grade — healthy all season is paramount to another deep run. Same goes for fellow seniors and team captains Adrian Leverette, Sean Saccomanno and Dwight Downing, plus others.

Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School Hurricanes

Coach: Ken Stills (first year) New head coach Ken Stills takes over a Bishop McLaughlin program that woefully went 1-7 and was outscored by a 274-91 margin. The Hurricanes, of course, hope for a turnaround under Stills, who brings quite the gridiron pedigree, having played for the Green Bay Packers (1985-1989) and Minnesota Vikings (1990) following a decorated college career at Wisconsin. Stills most recently served as a running backs coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton and also is a former head coach for the River City Rage of the United Indoor Football, and former running backs coach of the XFL’s Los Angeles Xtreme. He’s also the father of former University of Oklahoma and current Houston Texans’ wide receiver Kenny Stills, who’s embarking on his eighth NFL season.

Cypress Creek High School Coyotes

Coach: Mike Johnson (fourth year) Cypress Creek enjoyed its first winning season and first playoff berth since the Wesley Chapel-based school opened in 2017. Replacing the talented twin duo of Jalen and Jehlani Warren will be tough, but the Coyotes look to have a quarterback to build around in junior Owen Walls, who entrenched himself as the team’s starter midway through last season.

THE TEAMS

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SCHOOLS (2019 records) • Carrollwood Day School Patriots (2A) (0-9) • Freedom High School Patriots (6A) (2-8) • Gaither High School Cowboys (6A) (12-2) • Steinbrenner High School Warriors (8A) (12-2)

PASCO COUNTY SCHOOLS (2019 records) • Academy at the Lakes Wildcats (eight-man) (6-2) • Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School Hurricanes (Independent) (1-7) • Cypress Creek High School Coyotes (4A) (6-5) • Land O’ Lakes High School Gators (6A) (2-8) • Pasco High School Pirates (6A) (4-6) • Sunlake High School Seahawks (7A) (4-6) • Wesley Chapel High School Wildcats (5A) (5-5) • Wiregrass Ranch High School Bulls (7A) (7-4) • Zephyrhills Christian Academy Warriors (2A) (6-5) • Zephyrhills High School Bulldogs (5A) (5-5)

Land O’ Lakes High School Gators

Coach: Trac Baughn (first year) After a disappointing 2-8 mark last season, Land O’ Lakes turns to a football coaching lifer who hopes to steer the program back to winning seasons and playoff berths. In new head coach Trac Baughn, the Gators get someone with more than 30 years combined experience at the college and prep level, mostly throughout the state of Mississippi. His two seasons as head coach at Kosciusko High School in central Mississippi may serve most relevant to the Gator programs. Baughn guided that team to 10-3 mark in both 2015 and 2016, reaching the third round of Mississippi 4A playoffs both years. He was twice named “Area Coach of the Year” as those teams finished ranked in the Mississippi Associated Press’ 4A Top 5. Baughn in interviews has said he operates a system predicated on running the football and being fundamentally sound on defense. While the team will trot out more than a dozen seniors, the Gators have an unfavorable schedule against the likes of Mitchell, Tampa Catholic, Gaither, Wiregrass Ranch, Fivay and Calvary Christian high schools, among others.

Pasco High School Pirates

Coach: Jason Stokes (second year) Pasco finished 4-6 last year, but proved competitive in several of their defeats — losing four games by seven points or fewer. The Pirates return more experience compared to last season, but also have a challenging schedule that features Auburndale, Hollins, River Ridge — each of which tallied at least eight victories last season. The Pirates should continue to be one of the county’s better defensive teams with the return of First-Team All-Conference linebacker Amir Burgess and linebacker Gabriel Barnes, the team’s top two tacklers from 2019.

Sunlake High School

Coach: Trey Burdick (second year) Sunlake may still be in a bit of transition mode under second-year head coach Trey Burdick, who took over from area coaching legend Bill Browning — the man who built Sunlake from scratch in 2007, guided it to seven straight winning seasons and retired as one of the winningest coaches in Pasco and Hernando counties. Meanwhile, the Seahawks must find a way to replace the impact left behind by several All-Conference performers, such as tailback Zach Spicer, linemen Hunter Feiden and Cayman Wiseman, linebacker Damian Riewold, and athlete Jacob Schwarz, among others.

Returning junior quarterback Kevin Spillane, however, provides some stability offensively and turned in a respectable 2019 campaign, completing 63.3% of his throws for 921 passing yards and seven touchdowns and six picks, and adding another 130 yards on the ground.

Wesley Chapel Wildcats

Coach: Tony Egan (fifth year) The Wildcats haven’t suffered a losing season with head coach Tony Egan at the helm. A somewhat manageable schedule, which includes matchups against Anclote, Gulf and Tarpon Springs — programs that went a combined 4-26 last season — should help keep that deed intact. Finding consistent and reliable quarterback play will be critical, plus the needed emergence of some playmakers to help replace of two-way standout Jelani Vassell (graduated) and defensive back J.T. Anderson, a Division I prospect who transferred to Chamberlain High. Meantime, the Wildcats have boosted its coaching staff with notable program alums Kenny Roberts and Ellrie Allen.

Wiregrass Ranch High School Bulls

Coach: Mark Kantor (sixth year) Wiregrass Ranch is seeking its fifthstraight winning season, but it won’t be easy replacing the production of nine AllConference seniors from 2019. That includes the reigning Sunshine Athletic Conference Eastside Offensive Player of the Year (wideout Keith Walker) and Defensive Player of the Year (linebacker Dylan Ridolph, the county’s all-time career sacks leader with 48.) Luckily, the Bulls do benefit returning arguably the county’s top quarterback in junior Rocco Becht, who completed 52.1% of his throws last season for 1,985 yards, 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The son of 12-year NFL tight end and ESPN college football analyst Anthony Becht, the pro-style signal-caller is a consensus threestar recruit with already a half-dozen scholarship offers from Division I FBS programs (FIU, Iowa State, Southern Miss, Toledo,Wake Forest,West Virginia). Another bonus: The team boasts one of the nation’s top-ranked kickers in Adam Mihalek, who last season registered 31 touchbacks, averaged 56.1 yards per kickoff, was successful on 36 of 39 point-after touchdown attempts, and made three of seven field goals, including a long of 39 yards.

Zephyrhills Christian Academy Warriors

Coach: Mike Smith (sixth year) Zephyrhills Christian has enjoyed fourstraight winning seasons and corresponding playoff appearances, but will have a colossal void to fill with the graduation of two-way lineman Malik Jones — arguably the most decorated athlete to ever come through the program. The 6-foot-2, 296-pound Jones — now a freshman on scholarship at Division I FBS Florida Atlantic — registered a single-season county record in sacks (26) in 2019, to go along with 113 total tackles. A two-time state wrestling champion, his strength and push on both lines of scrimmage will be missed dearly. Offensively, the 2A school must replace the production of tailback Tyler Davis, who rushed for 1,274 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior last season.

Zephyrhills High School Bulldogs

Coach: Nick Carroll (fifth year) Zephyrhills last season experienced its first minor setback in the Nick Carroll coaching era — finishing with a pedestrian 5-5 mark. By comparison, in the previous three seasons, the Bulldogs under Carroll went a combined 29-6 en route to two district titles and another runner-up. Expect the Bulldogs to be feared again this season, with a more experienced roster, plus a slew of returning All-Conference performers in tailback Zyre Roundtree, defensive back Tre Gallimore, offensive lineman Jarrin Galyan and defensive end Maguire Neal. A full year of experience under the belt for incumbent dual-threat quarterback Timothy Jackson should lead to a leap in production and decision-making for the rising junior. Last season he completed 50% of his passes for 924 yards, seven touchdowns and 13 interceptions, and added 371 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Barry needs a ‘Mandy’

Seamus is goofy, loving and smart

Barry Manilow is a 4-year-old medium-size pup with a sharp tuxedo coat, an extremely fashionable white blaze down his nose, and the fattest head on this side of the Mississippi. With a butt that's always wiggling and a face that's always smiling, Barry adores all his people friends! His ideal home would have someone just as dedicated to snuggle time as he is, and he would absolutely love to be the 'king of his castle,' as the only canine in the home to better soak up all the love and attention. Barry is working hard on his obedience basics and has recently mastered ‘sit.’ What he doesn't have in experience, he makes up for in enthusiasm and willingness to learn.

Seamus is a 6-year-old border collie/lab/terrier mix, and was on the streets for a year before his owner was lucky enough to find him at the local animal shelter. Seamus passed all his training in record time to qualify to be his owner Colleen Davis’ service dog. Seamus sleeps with Davis, and one morning woke her by scratching her shoulder. Davis woke and couldn’t breathe, and was rushed to the hospital, diagnosed with a blood clot. Davis said she is alive and well because of Seamus, and he means the world to her. They live together in Lutz.

Bobby Flay serves up love Bobby Flay the cat may not star on “Iron Chef” or make a mean shrimp and grits like Bobby Flay the human, but he still brings plenty to the table. At a little more than 14 pounds, Bobby serves up love and plenty of snuggle time in your lap. He is a gorgeous middle-age golden tabby that is used to living in a home and sharing space with other kitties. Bobby is clean and respectful of his kennel in the shelter. One of his favorite pastimes is snuggling under his blankets like a little 'purrito,' but he is always thrilled to meet new friends. Bobby Flay overall is fairly healthy for his age, but has some age-related medical changes that an Animal Services’ team member can discuss.

If you would like to adopt Barry Manilow or Bobby Flay, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The adoption center is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6:30 p.m. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines. For more information, email adoptionpartners@pascocountyfl.net.

CHAMBER BREAKFAST CANCELED

The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the First National Bank of Pasco, has canceled its Sept. 15 breakfast meeting. "Even with slightly improving numbers, the safety and comfort level of our chamber members, attendees, volunteers and staff of both the venue and the chamber are paramount,” John Moors, the chamber’s executive director said, in a chamber posting. “We had provisions to limit the number of attendees and ensure CDC guidelines are followed, but with the uncertainty and planning time, we felt it appropriate, and good leadership, to cancel this event and hope for a successful chamber breakfast in October,” Moors said.

FOUNDATION MAKES DONATION

The Wells Fargo Foundation has made a $20,000 donation to the SMARTstart Microloan Fund, which is a program of the Pasco Economic Development Council. During the past decade, Wells Fargo has made 12 donations to the program, for a total of $163,000, according to a Pasco EDC news release. The Microloan Fund supports small businesses and start-ups in Pasco County that are not able to receive loans through traditional means. “Small businesses are the fabric of our

communities,” J. Bradley Smith, a Pasco EDC board member, said in the release. This fiscal year, four microloans have been awarded — to a delicatessen, packaged beverage manufacturer, online home health agency and a gourmet café.The loans totaled $147,500. “Our SMARTstart program supports Pasco entrepreneurs and small businesses through a variety of resources,” Bill Cronin, president/CEO, Pasco EDC, said in the release.“This donation adds financial support for businesses when they are ineligible for traditional bank loans. The fact that Wells Fargo still sees the value in our small businesses and is willing to help through a private donation speaks volumes to them as strong partners in our community.”

SMALL BUSINESS ASSISTANCE

Hillsborough County has paused a business assistance application program — to replace it with a process that's easier and allows for larger awards. The assistance is intended to help businesses in Hillsborough that have been affected by the sustained COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, according to a Hillsborough County news release. The County’s Rapid Response Recovery Program (R3) is being reformatted so that more businesses can qualify for assistance. The county expected to launch its new Phase 4 program on Aug. 31. Through the first three phases of the program, the county has been working with more than 3,000 small businesses on requests for nearly $32 million in direct funding. Phase 4 is designed to expand access to more businesses and increase award amounts, simplify qualifications, and make applications easier. Changes include: Increasing awards to up to $40,000 for operational/working capital expenses to provide an immediate infusion of capital to

local small businesses. The awards will be based the size of the small business, with tiers based on the number of employees. Eligibility has been expanded to businesses established before Jan. 1, 2020. Applicants who were denied in Phase 1 through Phase 3 may now qualify under the Phase 4 criteria and can simply resubmit their existing application.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY HELP

Wells Fargo Foundation has awarded Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco County with a $15,000 grant to build an affordable home in Dade City, according to a Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce posting. The funding is part of an $8.1 million donation to Habitat for Humanity International for capacity building and direct mission support to build, renovate and repair more than 350 affordable homes across the United States, according to information shared by The Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce. The grant is provided through Wells Fargo Builds SM and is part of the Wells Fargo Foundation's $1 billion philanthropic commitment to create more housing affordability solutions by 2025.

JOB SECURITY A BIG CONCERN

A new WalletHub survey found that one in three Americans is worried about layoffs. The survey also found that 74% of people think that Congress should continue to give extra unemployment benefits until the COVID-19 pandemic ends. The current rate of unemployment is 10.2%, according to WalletHub, which recently released a nationally representative Coronavirus & Labor Day Survey. The survey also found that 77% of Americans do not trust others to be responsible with social distancing over Labor Day Weekend. Also, the survey found that half of Americans think they've worked harder since the pandemic began.

BLACK BUSINESS OWNERS HIT HARD

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have varied across demographic groups, and black business owners have shown the biggest decline in business activity, according to information released by the Office of Advocacy for the U.S. Small Business Administration. The number of black people who were working and self-employed in July 2020 was 18.4% lower than in July 2019, while the decline for everyone else was 6.3%, the SBA reports. Declines have been bigger for black women than for black men, with a decline for black women in July of 19.8% and a decline for black men of 17.6%. Cleanup volunteers needed The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report Volunteers are needed to help with the International Coastal Cleanup in Pasco County. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the efforts are shifting to smaller groups at more sites, to encourage social distancing, according to a Pasco County news release. Volunteers are encouraged to find a public area in their community that needs to be cleaned, and recruit a small team to assist. Pasco is again partnering with Keep Pasco Beautiful in the effort to help clean public lands, roads and waterways. The annual International Coastal Cleanup, presented by the Rotary Club of New Port Richey and Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative Inc., will take place

throughout Pasco on Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon. Anyone who would like to volunteer must register at bit.ly/2020CoastalCleanup. Face masks, disposable gloves, and trash bags will be provided, as well as Coastal Cleanup face buffs while supplies last. “We’re thrilled to have the partnership and funding support of Withlacoochee River Electric, the Rotary District 6950 Foundation and our local Rotary Clubs – including West Pasco Sunset, New Port Richey, Trinity and Dade City Sunrise, Keep Pasco Beautiful Coordinator Kristen King, said in the release. The purpose is to clean up and track the trash collected. Since 1986, the International Coastal Cleanup has captured more than 334 million pounds of trash with the efforts of more than 16 million volunteers.
