Bids come in too low for Eve’s Garden By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Auctioneer Marty Higgenbotham called a halt to the public auction of real estate at Eve’s Garden when it became clear the bids were too low. But, Higgenbotham and owner Evie Lynn say they will keep working to sell the property for the best price they can get. “It was too soon, too quick,” said Lynn of the auction’s scheduled date of June 10. Potential buyers didn’t have enough time to review the site’s commercial potential and make an offer, she said. Higgenbotham Auctioneers International handled the auction of real estate, plants and inventory at Eve’s Garden, 5602 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. After 33 years, Lynn is relocating her business to about 55 acres in Groveland in See EVE’S, page 11A

Ryan Paul James’ first brush with fame came at the age of 6, when his name was listed in The Laker/Lutz News. “I was playing Little League there, with the Red Sox. All of the players were mentioned there in an article,” said James, a former Land O’ Lakes resident, now an actor and writer who lives in Los Angeles. Since moving to L.A., he’s performed in two dozen plays, has written 10 plays and is now shopping a pilot for a television show he’s written called “The Comeback Kids.” The show is about a pair of actors who were famous as children and are attempting a comeback, decades later. While no one has picked up the television show yet, it has been screened at film

festivals in such places as Los Angeles, Honolulu, Miami, Switzerland,Australia and London. It also has picked up a number of awards. It’s a project James has been working on for five years. He’s written eight episodes of the show and has casted most of them, with different stars who would be making appearances as themselves, or performing a role in the sitcom. The TV pilot most recently screened on June 10 at The Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. James said his desire to act began when he was a young boy, when his dad was a wildlife officer and the family lived on the grounds of Pine View Middle School in Land See PILOT, page 11A

Children who normally eat lunch at school when classes are in session have a free alternative during the summer months. Both Hillsborough and Pasco counties are participating in a summer food service program that provide free lunches and afternoon snacks at numerous sites around each county. The program begins on June 13 and concludes on Aug. 3. The sites are situated in areas where at least half of the children qualify for free or reduced price meals during the school year. The meals and snacks will be offered at local parks and other community locations to all children under 18 in the area. No applications are required and summer camp registration is not required. The Summer Food Service program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.

A new Famous Tate could be open as soon as fall. Site preparation for the 13,700-squarefoot appliance store is underway off U.S. 41 in Lutz. The store will sit on an outparcel in front of the Walmart Supercenter, and will be Pasco County’s third Famous Tate. Famous Tate of New Tampa Inc., purchased the 1.5-acre vacant lot in March 2015. Owner John Horst said at the time that he wanted his company to be “a player” in the growth coming to the area. “We have a lot of customer base,” said Claude Ward, the company’s general manager. But, growth in the area also will bring more traffic, he said. “As traffic becomes a hardship, people only drive so far, so we have to be more centrally located for our customers.” Bulldozers recently cleared the land. The next step will be building permits to begin the store’s construction. It tentatively is set for a fall opening, said Ward. Famous Tate was founded in 1954. Its Pasco locations are 5419 Village Market in Wesley Chapel, and 8010 Grand Blvd., in Port Richey.

A new Famous Tate off U.S. 41, in front of Walmart Supercenter, is expected to open by fall. It will be Pasco County’s third Famous Tate appliance store.

The store will have company, as developers are starting to buy more of the outparcels surrounding the Walmart location. The discount store and the County Line shopping plaza are located in a pie-shaped swath of land between U.S. 41 and North Dale Mabry Highway, with entrances off both roadways. New Port Richey Hospital Inc., a subsidiary of HCA Holdings Inc., recently

bought a 1.6-acre vacant lot, across from Famous Tate. Plans are to build a health care facility, according to a press release from The Land Sharks LLC, which brokered the sale. Another outparcel is slated for a StorKwik Self Storage. Mark Cooney of The Land Sharks also anticipates a restaurant and automobile store are potential new tenants on other outparcels.

Tiny dog’s barking saves family from fire Sadly, Peanut, the dog, doesn’t survive By Diane Kortus

dkortus@lakerlutznews.com

Peanut, a tiny black Chihuahua, saved the lives of three generations of a Lutz family on June 3, when his insistent barking awakened family members at 3 a.m., alerting them to a fire in the rear of their home. Peanut’s barking from her crate awakened Jeff DeRolf and his 26-year-old daughter, Maria, who together started down the stairs to see why the dog was barking. “When I was about halfway down the stairs, I heard my mother scream at the top of her lungs,” said Maria.“Our French doors leading to our back patio were engulfed in flames.” Those screams woke up the rest of the family — Maria’s 22-year-old brother, Jeff, her 7-year-old daughter, Michelle, and a friend of Jeff’s who was spending the night. They all were able to get to the front of the house and get out safely. Sadly, Peanut did not survive. “My dad and brother started back into the house to get Peanut, but by then the smoke was thick and was pouring out of the house,” Maria said.“My brother actually had to hold my dad back to stop him from going back in.” Peanut, just 6 pounds and still a puppy at a year-and-a-half, was technically her daughter’s dog, Maria said. “But, everyone loved Peanut. Her barking saved all of our lives — she is our hero.” The family escaped from the house with

just the clothes on their backs. “We were able to retrieve my grandfather’s ashes and a few pieces of clothing, but that was all,” Maria said. That means everything else was gone — every treasure that a family of five has amassed after 30 years of living in one place. Jeff and Carmen DeRolf moved into their two-story home at 17838 Morninghigh Drive in the Barrington subdivision before they had their children. “This is the house that we SUZANNE BEAUCHAINE/STAFF PHOTO lived in for our whole lives. No progress yet on reopening Lake Park By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

A park in Lutz that draws an estimated 300,000 users each year will not be reopening anytime soon. Lake Park, at 17302 N. Dale Mabry Highway, has been closed since Dec. 2 due to a sinkhole that spans 6 feet across and is about 90 feet deep. No progress has been made in repairing the sinkhole because Hillsborough County has not yet negotiated a new lease with the City of St. Petersburg, which owns the park, said Forest Turbiville, Hillsborough County’s director of conservation and environmental lands management. A meeting regarding the lease has been set for June 23. “During those discussions, we will talk about sinkholes, who’s responsible for paying to remedy that situation, and other issues, too — like the term of the agreement,”Turbiville said. The county prefers a lease that lasts around 30 years,Turbiville said. “If we’re going to be spending several hundred thousands of dollars over the next few years to make various improvements, whether it’s filling in the sinkhole or paving the main road, upgrading facilities — we want to make sure we have a long-term agreement,”Turbiville explained. The existing lease agreement for Lake Park expires on June 3, 2019. Under that deal, Hillsborough County pays just $1 per year to the City of St. Petersburg to operate the park. However, Turbiville said the City of St. Petersburg has proposed a new lease agreement requesting $3,000 per month, or $36,000 per year. It also is requesting $2,000 per month from the county to lease Lake Rogers Park. That lease agreement expires on Sept. 30. “One of the things we’re going to discuss in our meeting (with St. Petersburg) is what the basis is for those numbers,” Turbiville said. The low-end estimate to repair the sinkhole is $103,000, but Turbiville said the cost could be nearly double that amount, based on the county’s previous experience in re-

pairing sinkholes in other locations. He also noted the sinkhole repair would likely take six weeks to eight weeks, after a new lease agreement is executed. “We’re hopeful that (the park) will be open sometime this year; that’s the best I can say,”Turbiville said. Flooding on Lake Park’s central road also must be addressed,Turbiville said. Two lakes situated near the flooded road have begun to merge — caused by a significant drop-off in water pumping by the aquifer, he said. “Those lakes are...filling up almost like a bathtub, and they’re going over the road, so about nine (months) to 10 months out of the year, we have a couple of feet of water over the road,”Turbiville explained. “Ever since 2013, the pumping has dropped from 10 (million gallons) or 12 million gallons down to 1 million gallons per day. As a result, the lakes and the wetlands within the park have come back up, so what you have now is a much wetter park than you did even five years ago,”Turbiville said. Turbiville believes the nearly three-quarter-mile stretch of road will have to be repaved and elevated. The estimated cost for the project, which is about $850,000, would likely fall on the shoulders of Hillsborough County, he said. The project would require culverts or some other type of system that would allow water to flow underneath the road, he noted. Other long-term Lake Park improvements include renovations to the park’s main offices and restrooms, and upgrades to the concession area. Lake Park, a 589-acre site, features an archery range, a BMX bicycle track, two equestrian arenas and a radio-controlled car track. Based on revenue figures from 20142015, the park typically nets about $10,000 per month in revenue from park-goers. Due to Lake Park’s closure,Turbiville said most of the park’s employees have been temporarily reassigned to other locations within the regional park system.A skeleton crew remains at Lake Park for upkeep and maintenance.

Resetting U.S.-Russia relations, one hug at a time

By Tom Jackson

tjackson@lakerlutznews.com

A

long, long time ago, in a country far, far away, a new president’s secretary of state presented her Russian counterpart with what clever minds at Foggy Bottom must have imagined was simple genius: a “reset” button, symbolizing the Obama administration’s desire for a fresh start between our nations. We’ve seen how that worked out. Anyone seeking an enduring USA-Russia reset needs to program his GPS for a lowslung block house off 20 Mile Level Road in Land O’ Lakes. There, amid the managed chaos and loving clutter of a makeshift family, is the nerve center of a genuine international coming-together. Four boys from St. Petersburg, Russia, have spent their coming-of-age school years here under the guidance of transplanted Hoosier Eric Wilson. And, they enjoyed valueadded assistance from the village network that is nearby Academy at the Lakes, the lads’ welcoming school. The quartet — Gleb Barkovskiy, Maxim and Tioma Stepanets and Daniil Shcherbinin — has shrunk, through graduation, to a duo of Tioma and Daniil. By late August, the household will shrink again to Wilson and Tioma, plus languid Sam, the rescue coonhound mix. By then, Daniil, 18, will have been dispatched to Springfield, Ohio, and Wittenberg University. How are the other alumni doing? Barkovskiy, the son of a former Soviet nuclear submarine captain and a rising senior at Bucknell, is interning at Goldman Sachs. Max

Daniil Shcherbinin with his mom, Katarina Ilina, at an airport.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF ERIC WILSON

Daniil Shcherbinin and Sam, a rescue coonhound mix, in the woods near their Land O’ Lakes house.

Stepanets is a rising sophomore at Alma College in Michigan, where he’s a member of the football team and majoring in business. As for Shcherbinin (“Sher-ben-in,” but for simplicity’s sake, hereafter Daniil), he anticipates a summer of unofficial occupations. Here on a restrictive student visa, this perfect prospect for stocking the top shelves at Publix — he’s 6 feet 5 — ruefully concedes he can’t collect “a regular paycheck,” but he needs to save for college expenses. So he’ll mow lawns, paint houses, help out with the household’s pooch-sitting operation, “move really heavy furniture” and do whatever other honest odd jobs come his way. After all, if he’d wanted to be idle and tempted into troublemaking, he could have stayed in Russia. That depressing prospect is the future Katerina Ilina, a real estate agent in a perpetually tough market, was hoping her only

child could avoid when she presented him nearly 10 years ago for evaluation by an associate of the Renaissance Project. The plan was to identify promising St. Petersburg boys and invite them to attend a posh private school in Boca Raton, where they would be groomed to become citizen ambassadors for America back home. Alas, the original plan soon collapsed. By then, however, Wilson wasn’t just on board, he’d become a passionate believer and the boys’ best advocate. Long story short, he found a like-minded administrator at Academy at the Lakes, and through a combination of scholarships, fundraising schemes, donations, a generous landlord, philanthropic medical professionals and stretching Wilson’s teacher’s paycheck, they’ve made it work. (Read more about their efforts here: http://renproject.org.) It hasn’t hurt that each of the Russians has been an exemplary student and — as much as any teenager is capable — a model citizen. Daniil captained the football and basketball teams, served as student body vice president and played Mr. Darling in the school’s springtime production of “Peter Pan” — notably, without attempting a British accent. The amateur thespian explains:“When I try to do an English accent, my Russian really comes out.” (Not that he hasn’t waxed the

Volga boatman when it might charm an American girl, or get him out of a tight spot with a teacher, he concedes.) Otherwise, looking for highlights in an eventful senior year, two stand out: First, the March afternoon he learned he’d been accepted, with generous underwriting, at Wittenberg. Second, the recent two weeks he spent here, with his mom, during Katarina’s first visit to America. What did she learn? Americans are uncommonly welcoming to newcomers. “Everyone is so friendly,” she says.“Everyone wants to hug.” Maybe, she says, it’s the residue from Stalin, an era of suspicion, but Russians are rarely so open to strangers. Experiencing it for herself, Katarina came to appreciate how this kid from a factory district —where V.I. Lenin once lectured on communism — had become upbeat and open-hearted, phonetically, “dobriy” in Russian. What a contrast to his somber, pessimistic peers back home. Here she saw real evidence of that elusive reset. And, for those back home who fret their countryman has gone native, not to worry. When he’s not fetching and lifting this summer, Daniil will be immersed in Russian literature, Mikhail Bulgakov’s fantasy parable, “The Master and Margarita.” “I am proud to be Russian,” he says flatly. “I never want to lose that.” Neither does anyone else in the Renaissance Project. They like him just the way he’s turned out. And, so this happened. On the day of the open house on 20 Mile Level Road, when teachers and friends came to celebrate Daniil’s graduation, they brought presents for him, and for Katarina. Gifts for the graduate Katarina understood. But for her? Why? “We brought you gifts,” explained one of the moms, her eyes shining, “because you shared your gift — your only son — with us.” They hugged and wept happy tears. Because that’s what moms, wherever they’re from, do. It’s from such embraces, real, lasting resets emerge. Tom Jackson, a resident of New Tampa, is interested in your ideas. Woman’s club hosts ‘sleepover’

Members of the GFWC Lutz-Land O’Lakes Woman’s Club staged a murder mystery theater production of a ‘Sinister Sleepover.’ The ‘whodunit’ robbery and murder mystery was ultimately solved by members of the audience, many of whom complemented the sleepover theme by wearing pajamas, robes, slippers and even holding teddy bears. The proceeds of the dinner theater fundraiser will help fund donations to the many local community organizations the club supports each year. COURTESY OF BENEDICTINE SISTERS OF FLORIDA

Sister Roberta chosen, again, in canonical election

The Benedictine Sisters of Florida have re-elected Sister Roberta Bailey, center, as prioress/president for the next four years. Benedictines follow the Rule of St. Benedict, who set forth in the sixth century, the qualities of the prioress, her election and her role. Sister Lynn McKenzie, right, president of the St. Scholastica Federation, addressed the sisters and pointed out that the most important ‘rule’ for a prioress is that she ‘holds the place of Christ in the monastery.’ Sister Bernadine Reyes (left), prioress of the Boerne, Texas, Benedictine community, facilitated the discernment process.

PREVENT HEAT-RELATED CAR DEATHS

Each year in the United States, an average of 38 children and hundreds of dogs die from hyperthermia (heatstroke) in hot cars. At 70 degrees on a sunny day, a car can reach 100 degrees within 15 minutes. Body temperatures for children and dogs rise three to five times faster than an adult’s, and brain damage can occur in a matter of minutes. Reduce the risk through A.C.T.: • AVOID heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in the car, not even for a minute. Be sure to keep your car locked when you are not in it, so kids don’t climb in on their own. • CREATE a reminder by putting someContinued on next page

41,000 LBS. Lost In 10 Years! In the 10 years that Gerri Willet and her family have owned MediWeightloss in Lutz, they have assisted several thousand patients lose approximately 41,000 pounds. “It is very rewarding knowing we’ve helped so many people become healthier,” said Gerri. “Although everyone wants to lose weight to look better, we believe the most important aspects are improving our patients’ health and adding years to their life.” This month, Gerri and her staff of health care professionals are celebrating the clinic’s 10th anniversary, including an open house hosted by the Wesley Chapel and Central Pasco chambers of commerce. “In addition to celebrating with the business community, we are inviting the public to stop by and tour our facility,” said Gerri. “We genuinely want people to see our clean, comfortable offices, meet our staff and learn about a weight loss program that really works.” Visitors don’t need to worry about being pressured. “We know people are most successful at losing weight when they decide it’s time to take action,” said Gerri. “We just want to educate folks, so when they are ready to lose weight, they know we’re in their neighborhood.” Medi-Weightloss is located on S.R. 54 at Oak Grove Boulevard, just east of the Ferman Auto dealership. It has been at this location for all 10 years because it is convenient to people living in Lutz, Land O’

Lakes and Wesley Chapel. “Our location may be the same, but not our program,” said Gerri. “In the past 10 years, there have been many, many positive changes and additions because of all the research our company conducts,” said Gerri. These include: • Pharmaceutical-grade supplements • Informative tip sheets and easy-to-use food calendar • Full-time nutritionist • Low-calorie, healthy recipes • High-quality, prepacked foods, including nutrition bars, shakes, soups, meal replacements and sugar-free candies • Interactive website with a patient portal • Inexpensive exercise equipment that’s easy to use at home and work The one constant at MediWeightloss is its physician-supervised program. Because weight loss impacts every aspect on a person’s body, Medi-Weightloss has always employed physicians to work with patients. “We have a medical doctor on site most days, and patients can consult with a doctor anytime they want,” said Gerri. “This is what truly sets us apart from other weight loss clinics.” A typical patient at MediWeightloss loses 35 pounds, Gerri said. “And, because your lifespan increases by one-and-a-half years for every 10 pounds you lose, most of our patients will live an additional five years!”

Saddlebrook fire: Dorm rooms destroyed, no one hurt By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Quick actions by a student at Saddlebrook Preparatory School averted the potential loss of life, in the early morning hours of June 9. About 2:30 a.m., the student smelled smoked and went searching for the source. When he saw smoke, “he pulled the alarm. He started knocking on doors. His roommates went and knocked on doors. He called security, and security came down and they knocked on doors,” said Pat Ciaccio, general manager of Saddlebrook Resort Tampa, at 5700 Saddlebrook Way in Wesley Chapel. The resort has been home to an international school for aspiring professional tennis players and golfers since 1993. Ninety-six students, from 26 countries, attend the school, including 54 who board at the resort. While the school is for students from grade three through 12, it only boards eighth- through 12th-graders. There were 28 students and two adults in the boys’ dormitory which caught fire, and everyone got out of the building without injury, Ciaccio said. “We were able to get all of the students out actually, before there were flames. There was just smoke at the time,” Ciaccio said. “From that point on, it turned into a three-alarm,” Ciaccio said. Pasco County Fire Rescue Training Chief Shawn Whited said when the fire department crews arrived, “they had heavy fire through the roof of the building. “As we were getting there, we realized there was a lot of fire there, so we called for a second- and third-alarm to help fight the fire,”Whited added.“The building was heavily damaged. The roof was burned off.” It took 55 firefighters more than 1 ½ hours to put out the fire, and fire department investigators were still on the scene hours later, trying to determine the cause for the blaze,Whited said. It turns out that the fire was started by a faulty bathroom exhaust fan/ bathroom heater mounted in the ceiling,Whited said. No estimates were available on the extent of the loss, but Whited described the damage as extensive.“They’re going to have to gut the entire building,” he said. On the afternoon after the fire, Ciaccio said,“Really, the extent of the damage — it’s too early — the adjusters aren’t even at the property yet.” In the short term, the boarders from the

COURTESY OF PASCO COUNTY FIRE RESCUE

It took 55 Pasco County Fire Rescue firefighters more than an hour-and-a-half to extinguish the blaze that broke out in the boys’ dormitory at Saddlebrook Preparatory School in the early morning hours of June 9. No one was injured, but the damage was extensive.

boys’ dorm were relocated to the next courtyard. “They’ll remain in there, those that stay for summer school, and then next school year, we’ll go back into there until Courtyard 11 is rebuilt,” Ciaccio said. The general manager praised the students, resort staff and emergency rescue workers for their response. The student who smelled the smoke “went into fire-drill mode,” Ciaccio said, explaining that the school and dormitories have monthly fire drills to know how to handle such emergencies. “When your chief of security is calling you at 3 a.m., it’s not a good phone call.To arrive on property shortly after that and to have everything as buttoned down — you don’t ever want the tragedy to happen, but you feel good about the preparation,” he said. “In an hour’s time, we had them (students) relocated to another courtyard, and they were in rooms, laying down,” he said. He was particularly impressed by the way the students conducted themselves. “They are in pressure situations all of the time on the tennis court, on the golf course. And, obviously that just extended into their personal lives, because they handled this situation so effortlessly. “We were business as usual today. The kids were in class, taking exams,” Ciaccio said. That is, except for the 28 who were in the dorm on the night of the fire. They were excused from exams.

Susan Barreto and her brother-in-law, Frank Corradini, both of San Antonio, bid on several bonsai plants during a public action at Eve’s Garden.

EVE’S, from page 1A Lake County. She anticipates a grand opening in December. About 20 people waited under an intense sun, as Higgenbotham kicked off the auction. Only two people bid on the real estate, and their offers climbed no higher than $445,000 for one parcel. Bidding started at $400,000. “We sell mobile homes for $400,000.Are you kidding me?” Higgenbotham said. Total acreage is about seven acres, with frontage on U.S. 41 and lake frontage to the rear of the site. The parcels, of 2.1 acres and 4.7 acres, could be purchased separately or together. The property includes the nursery, gift shop and warehouse. Inventory included

PILOT, from page 1A O’ Lakes. “Living in the middle of nowhere and playing there on the campus of Pine View, I would let my imagination go. “I remember, that, like for a year, they were building their (Pine View Middle) gym. I don’t think I can get in trouble for this anymore — but I would go in there and play Indiana Jones,” James said. “I would watch probably too much television,” he added. His acting debut came in 1994 when he played the role of a Mousekateer on the Mickey Mouse Club, filmed in Orlando. His acting teacher, who was the show’s casting director, got him the gig, he said. He knew from the beginning the role would be a short run. “When I was brought on, they’d already announced that the show was cancelled,” James said. He replaced a cast member who wanted to go to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. James moved to Los Angeles in 1995 to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. But, that didn’t last long, either. “I was so homesick, and I hated L.A. — could not stand it,” he said. So, he returned to the Tampa Bay area, where he became a disc jockey on 100.7 Kiss FM. “I wasn’t really looking to get into radio, but it just happened for me. I bounced around to a couple of other radio stations.A radio station out here in Los Angeles heard one of my air checks, and they called me up and wanted to see if I would be interested in coming out here,” he said.

bonsai, bamboo plants, koi fish, jewelry, nursery supplies and other gift items. Local gardeners often came to Eve’s for bonsai and other plants and gifts. But, the vast majority of Lynn’s business has been on the wholesale side, nationwide, to gift shops, nurseries and brand name stores, such as Walgreen’s and Publix. Her bonsai nursery is one of the largest in the nation. While the real estate didn’t sell, some plants and other inventory from Eve’s Garden and gift shop did sell. San Antonio resident Frank Corradini and his sister-in-law, Susan Barreto, bid on several bonsai plants. Corradini has created his own bonsai for about 40 years. He admired Lynn’s specimens. “These are just so nice,” he said.“I want to expand my garden a bit.”

He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. So, he prayed about it. “I was like,‘God, you’ve got to give me a sign here’,” James said. He knew he couldn’t afford to move to L.A., but within a month of his prayer, he had booked two national commercials and had received the offer from the radio station. “And, so I thought,‘I’ll give L.A. one more shot.’ “Here I am, 12 years later, married, with a kid,” James said. His wife, Melissa Disney — a cousin of Walt Disney — is a voiceover artist. Though not a household name like her cousin, she has attracted her own share of fame. She narrated the trailer for the action movie,“Gone in 60 Seconds,” — widely credited as one of the first major movie trailers to employ a female voice, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She also has voiced The Academy Awards, The Emmy’s and the Billboard Music Awards. While James and his wife work in the industry, their 4-year-old son, Ryder, gets a chance to dip into the lifestyle, too. He already has met such international stars as Madonna, Harrison Ford and James Earl Jones. Although the Land O’ Lakes native has lived in L.A., for a dozen years, he still gets homesick and travels back to the area to visit family a couple of times a year. Every time he comes home, he must make one stop before returning to L.A. He drops by Larry’s Deli, on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard, where he loads up on Cuban sandwiches to take back to California. The mere mention of them, James said during a recent telephone interview, makes his mouth water.

Lutz Cemetery Association seeks donations By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

The Lutz Cemetery has been a landmark in the community for a century, but it often goes unnoticed. There’s a group of dedicated volunteers, with the nonprofit Lutz Cemetery Association, who want to make sure that the grave sites within the cemetery off U.S. 41 are not neglected. Donations help pay for upkeep, including mowing grass and maintaining gravesites. Many burial plots over the years were sold without perpetual care plans, according to Kathy Vanater, secretary/treasurer of the association. The group raises money to help maintain the cemetery. It will have a booth at the annual Fourth of July festivities in Lutz, but donations are welcome any time, Vanater said. About 1,600 people are buried at the Lutz Cemetery, including members of prominent families, past and present. Among them are Fred Polen, a teacher at Myrtle School, and later a mail carrier; Herbert Vernon, owner of Vernon & Land

Co.; and, three generations of the Goheen family. It is also the final resting place of Oscar Cooler, a champion of Lutz youth sports; and Carolyn Meeker, former president of the Lutz Civic Association. The hallowed ground is a legacy donated to Lutz residents by C.E. Thomas, who was president of the North Tampa Land Company in the early 20th century. A group of Chicago investors bought about 32,000 acres, north of the city of Tampa. They sold vacant lots to some of the early settlers of Lutz, and made an offer that anyone who bought 10 acres could have a free lot in town or a burial plot in the cemetery. For many years after its founding, Lutz residents would gather once or twice a year to clean up the cemetery. However, that practice ended long ago. In the 1950s, the nonprofit association stepped in to fill the gap. For information or to make a donation, people can stop by the association’s booth on July 4. Or, donations can be mailed to Lutz Cemetery Association, P. O. Box 1353, Lutz, FL 33548.

Justin Dargahi has a penchant for knocking down 3-point shots. So much so that he holds the Guinness World Record for the most 3s made from NBA range (23 feet, 9 inches) in one minute. Firing three after three inside the Land O’ Lakes High School gymnasium, Dargahi knocked down 26 treys in 60 seconds on Jan. 4, breaking the previous set mark of 25. His feat became an official Guinness World Record in early May. “I’ve always been the best shooter on my team in school,” said Dargahi, the head JV (Junior Varsity) coach for the Land O’ Lakes girls basketball team and former basketball player at Cambridge Christian School. “Shooting was always easy to me.” The skill comes so easily for Dargahi that he claims he makes anywhere from 75 percent to 80 percent of 3-pointers he attempts when he’s “just shooting around for fun.” He figures he can make about 95 percent of his free throw attempts, too. “Anytime I was on a (school) team, I would always be the technical free-throw shooter,” said Dargahi, who began playing organized hoops at 11 years old.“I had a green light to shoot 3s most of the time. It was always like, ‘If we need a three, let’s get (Dargahi) the ball or set a screen for him.’ “In games, I would show off sometimes shooting 10 feet behind the (3-point) line,” he said. Out of curiosity, the JV coach decided to look into some of the timed 3-point records a few years ago. When he saw some of the record totals, he realized he might have a decent chance at knocking down some of them.

Justin Dargahi broke the Guinness World Record for most 3-pointers made in one minute (26) on Jan. 4.

“When I saw that record of 25, I was like, ‘I could get that,’” Dargahi said, with an air of confidence in his voice. On his first attempt at the record, he nailed 18 shots. While impressive for most, Dargahi knew he could shoot at a much higher clip. “I had a lot of bad luck; I had one of my friends helping me, and we weren’t clicking,” Dargahi said. “It just wasn’t scripted too well.” To better organize a record-breaking strategy, Dargahi reckoned his best chance was to enlist the help of some of his JV roster at Land O’ Lakes. About eight or nine of his players aided Dargahi by fetching loose balls and rapidly handing them to him at the top of the threepoint arc as he continually fired from deep range. The strategy worked, as he eventually

knocked down 26 shots after a January JV practice. “It was still kind of shocking when he got it,” sophomore Land O’ Lakes JV captain Claire Valeski said. “We were all happy and all thought he would get it, but then again, it’s one of those things that’s like the luck of the draw,” she said. Dargahi’s shooting philosophy was fixated on conserving energy. “If I’m not on a great pace, I would stop. If I only have five or six (made 3s) after 20 seconds, instead of consume all my energy, I would just stop,” he said. He also uses his arms more than his legs. Dargahi admits he wished he could’ve put the record out of reach — perhaps making 29 or 30 3-pointers — knowing full well he may have to attempt the endeavor all over again if someone surpasses his current mark of 26. While a prolific shooter during his high school career at Cambridge Christian, Dargahi didn’t receive much interest from college coaches. “It’s hard when you’re 6 feet to play bigtime college basketball, even if you are the best shooter,” said Dargahi, a 2007 graduate of the University of South Florida (USF). “I probably should’ve practiced on other stuff like dribbling and my defense.” Instead, Dargahi settled for playing intramurals at USF, and occasionally entered shooting contests — which he typically won. The love of the game and high-pressure competition led him into coaching, where he said he enjoys watching his players mature and develop their skills over the course of a season. Despite his proclivity for making shots, Dargahi said he doesn’t particularly work with

his JV players on their shooting technique. “It’s hard for me to see through their eyes, because to me, it’s so easy,” he said. “I can’t get along their thought process, so I’m probably not the best shooting teacher.” But, that doesn’t stop him from giving his players a few tips along the way. “I would tell people:‘Don’t worry about your form.’The best shooters — a lot of them have weird form,” Dargahi said, noting that former NBA great Reggie Miller would cross his arms during his 3-point attempts.“I think form is totally overrated; I think (setting your) feet is more important. Do whatever you’re comfortable with.” Dargahi doesn’t plan to end his shooting record quest anytime soon. The Land O’ Lakes hoops coach also has his eyes set on breaking the record for most made free throws in one minute (52) and the most 3pointers made in two minutes (44).

year honors

Saint Leo University head men’s golf coach Chris Greenwood was named the 2016 Dave Williams Division II National Coach of the Year Award by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The third-year coach led the Lions to back-to-back NCAA National Championship appearances, but this season concluded with a title in hand. The No. 2 Lions defeated No. 1 Chico State 3-2 in the national finals on May 21 in Denver, Colorado, to culminate in the University’s first-ever team National Championship. During the season, Greenwood guided Saint Leo to 11 top-five tournament finishes. Prior to working at Saint Leo, Greenwood served as the Director of Golf at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for one year, and also spent seven seasons as the head men’s golf coach at Lynn University in Boca Raton. A former golf pro, Greenwood spent 12 years on the Canadian Golf Tour before becoming a college coach.

New rules for ‘live contact’

The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) recently announced new football practice procedures that limit live contact. The procedures, which aim to improve player safety, take effect Aug. 1, the first practice day of the 2016 season. During the regular season, live contact will be restricted to 30 minutes per day and 80 minutes total per week. Live contact — defined as drills with game-like conditions where players are taken to the ground— will not be allowed to occur on more than two consecutive days, and cannot exceed three practice days per week. “Player safety has and will always be the number one goal of the FHSAA,” outgoing FHSAA Executive Director Dr. Roger Dearing said in a release.“Protecting our student-athletes is paramount in growing the game of football and this administrative procedure is a step in the right direction.” From day six of preseason practice (Aug. 1) through the Monday of the first regular season game, live contact will be limited to 40 minutes each day, with no more than two straight days of live contact. During two-a-days, only one practice can include live contact and cannot surpass 40 minutes. On that Monday, the regular-season guidelines come into effect for the remainder of the season.

$90,000 makeover gives pool a fresh look By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

S

wimmers were splashing around the pool at the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, enjoying the facility which recently received a $90,000 makeover. Some adult swimmers swam laps, while some kids received instruction from Coach Robin Hilgenberg. A little while later, others joined in, taking a refreshing dip on a scorching hot day. Normally, the pool is open in time for Memorial Day holiday, but this year it wasn’t, because of delays on the project to upgrade the pool. Besides resurfacing the pool, and repainting the deck, the pool’s shower facilities were improved, too. The last time the pool had been resurfaced was during the 1990s. Jordan Wheeler, a head lifeguard at the pool, said the improvements are noticeable. “If you go in there, it feels a lot better on your feet. There were some holes on the backside over there, that got completely mended,” he said. It looks better, too, he said. “The water, now, is a lot more blue,” said Wheeler, who is working at the pool for his third season. The pool has a capacity for 150 guests, but typically doesn’t get that crowded, he said, noting the most he’s seen there at one time was about 120. A number of summer camps visit the

pool, and the kids seem to enjoy themselves. “It gets rowdy, that’s for sure,” he said. The pool’s upgrades were done primarily in the off-season, he said. “We were only closed for about a week and a half in the time that we’d normally be open,”Wheeler said.“It was less than optimal that we didn’t get to open on Memorial Day. Usually, a lot of people want to come by. It’s practically the first day of summer. People want to go out and spend their day out at the pool.” “We’re really excited to have this facility cleaned up a little bit, because last year it was kind of in sad shape,” said Kristany Fitzthum, supervisor at the site. With the repair work completed, Fitzthum hopes people will take advantage of the pool. “I don’t think many people know that we’re open. Our first day, we had four people here.Yesterday, we had 12 or 13,” she said. To make matters worse, there was lightning on both afternoons, which meant they had to clear the pool. When lightning is within a 10-mile radius of the pool, it is cleared for a half-hour before swimmers can return, Fitzthum said. The price of admission is reasonable, Fitzthum noted. The daily charge for swimming is $4 for adults and $3 for children. Passes also are available. A family of four, with two adults and two children, is $120; an adult pass is $80, and a child’s pass is $60. “The New Port Richey Recreation Center, it’s $7 to get in and swim, per per-

son,” Fitzthum said. Another advantage at the Land O’ Lakes complex is that there’s an adults’ only hour from 11 a.m. to noon, she said. The pool temperature is kept at 80 degrees to 83 degrees. “Most of the people who come here are really local. Most of our people who come are regulars. So, we can form really good relationships with them.We know all of them by name,” Fitzthum said. Nancy and Bernie Guss, who live in Plantation Palms, are both retired from Pasco County Schools. They began using the pool when it opened, and their now-grown daughter was a member of a swim team there. “We can do our yard work in the morning, and then just come over here in the afternoon and relax,” Nancy Guss said.“I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of classes they offer. I hope they have a variety of classes,” she said. Marie Berghoefer, who was doing laps, said she’s been swimming at the pool for 10 years. A lifelong swimmer, she said she enjoys coming to the pool and will be there as often as she can be this summer. Carrie Kukuda, also of Land O’ Lakes, was swimming laps, too. She said she appreciates the convenience of the pool, not only for herself but for members of the triathlon team from Get A Grip Total Fitness, where she is the owner, trainer and head coach. As Coach Hilgenberg taught her class, some parents looked on. Debbie Fisher has two kids — 13-yearold Tyler Esenberg and 11-year-old Kayla

They want to be ready,” Fisher said.Tyler is going into eighth grade, and Kayla will be in seventh. “They learned how to swim in Coach Robin’s backyard when they were young,” Fisher said, but they don’t swim competitively, and they want to learn the proper techniques. She was glad they were there. “They look happy,” Fisher said. Curbelo, who lives in Wilderness Lake Preserve, said her 12-year-old son is “big into fitness now.” She’s impressed by the pool at the Land O’ Lakes complex. “It’s a beautiful pool,” she said. “It’s great that they have somewhere to go,” Curbelo added. The pool is open Tuesdays through Sunday. It opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays, and closes at 6 p.m. It opens at 11 a.m. on weekends, and closes at 7 p.m.
