Bay Area ‘Big’ and ‘Little’ honored By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

Just three years ago, Howie and Hunter were complete strangers. But, through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay program, the two have become best buddies. In fact, their friendship has earned them the district’s 2019 Big Brother and Little Brother Award. “It wasn’t something we were striving for, so it made it that much more of a surprise,” said Big Brother Howie Taylor.“It’s quite an honor.” They were nominated by their match specialist who initially introduced them in 2016 and believes their friendship exemplifies the kind of relationship the program strives to achieve. Every year, Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs volunteer adults, referred to as Bigs, with youths, referred to as Littles, around the country. See BROTHERS, page 19A

Elaine Pittman is looking forward to the annual flea market at the Old Lutz School. She’s a staple at the annual event, hosted by the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club. Nicknamed the ‘Plant Lady,’ Pittman will have her signature booth displaying an array of plants and flowers outside. “Plants have always been my hobby,” the 87-year-old explained.“I had my first garden bed when I was about 11 years old living on Long Island.” Over the years, she has sold African violets, Christmas cactus, amaryllis and kalanchoes plants of different sorts. Not far from Pittman’s booth will be the woman’s club ‘juniorettes.’ The teenage girls will be selling baked goods to satisfy hungry patrons. Rooms throughout the school have been stocked with various goods. Each room has its own theme. One room displays racks of clothes organized by size, while others offer jewelry, chinaware and electronic appliances, among others. Outside, there will be tents showcasing furniture, handbags, shoes, toys and seasonal decors. Pat Serio, another club member, said “you can’t beat our prices.” Plus, she noted: “Everything is carefully

cleaned, organized and well-priced.” The club is still accepting donations to help raise money to benefit the woman’s club scholarship program and other local causes. The money that Pittman raises through plant sales is used to benefit Christian Social Services, which, among other things, helps feed the hungry. Donors who have items they’d like to contribute to the flea market are welcome to drop off items at the school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. February 27 is the last day to drop off donations. This year’s flea market will be March 1 and March 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission and parking will be free to the public.

Marilyn Wannamaker leaves a legacy of service By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

She was a fixture for years at Independence Day celebrations in Lutz, overseeing the annual Cake Bake Contest. She was a regular, too, at the Christmas House at the Old Lutz School, serving up hot chocolate and doling out cookies. But, those are just a couple of the many, many ways that Marilyn Wannamaker served the community of Lutz. She was deeply involved in the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club, occupying nearly every office, including president for two terms. She was devoted to helping young girls develop a heart for community work, as well as leadership skills, through her role as adviser to the Little Women of Lutz.

Marilyn Wannamaker’s life was remembered on Feb. 23, during a Memorial Eucharist at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Tampa. During the religious ceremony, she was eulogized by her sons, Mark and Scott Peterson; and by Annette Bellinger, a first vice president of the Woman’s Club, and Jane Mason, current adviser for the Little Women of Lutz. Her son, Mark, also shared some thoughts provided by his wife, Val Peterson. Bellinger recalls feeling a little bit intimidated when she met Wannamaker, who was president of the woman’s club at the time — and had total command of club protocol. But, Bellinger said her initial concerns were quickly erased, as she witnessed Wannamaker’s incredible warmth. Wannamaker paid attention to people, WWW W.FRANKY-DS.COM 18450 US 41 & SUnSet Rd

and became aware of not only details in their lives, but in their loved ones’ lives, as well, Bellinger said. Wannamaker led by example. “She was always willing to work,” Bellinger said. “Even when she didn’t feel that great, she still turned up.” Mason, who now works with The Little Women of Lutz, recalled Wannamaker’s passion for that group. During Wannamaker’s tenure as its advisor,The Little Women of Lutz cooked dinner at the Ronald McDonald House, helped at the Lutz Branch Library, kept a stretch of road clear of trash; and helped a family at Christmas, and performed other acts of community service. Working with the girls was a source of joy to Wannamaker. “To me it’s wonderful to watch them grow and develop into wonderful young women,” she told The Laker/Lutz News, in a feature story about the group. Wannamaker’s sons — Mark and Scott — were unabashed in expressing their affection at her memorial. “Mom never missed an event,” Mark said. “She graded our homework. “She was our life coach. We have so many fond memories of our mom,” he said. “Our mom volunteered for everything,” Mark added. Over the years, she was active on the board of the Lutz Volunteer Fire Department, held the honorary title of Lutz Guv’na, was head of the St. Clement’s Altar Guild, and was a Salvation Army bell ringer, among other things. Mark said her calendar was so crowded that he would have to call her weeks in advance to get a date to take her out to dinner. He wasn’t complaining: He was proud. Her son, Scott, said his mom was a good sport. When he was playing Little League baseball, she’d put on a glove to go outside to play catch with him. And, she stepped up to become the official scorekeeper.

COURTESY OF PAT SERIO

Marilyn Wannamaker was known for her steadfast service to the community of Lutz, and her kind, caring ways.

“She had immaculate penmanship,” he marveled. She encouraged his love of music, even to the point of allowing his bands to practice at their house. “I don’t know how many times that poor woman had to hear ‘Gloria,’” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd. Wannamaker enjoyed traveling and had the chance to visit such places as Scotland, Australia and the Far East. She enjoyed those trips, but she was always happy to return to Lutz, where she spent much of her time and energy working to improve community life. After the service, her friend Pat Serio, another member of the Woman’s Club, described Wannamaker as “a very, very involved friend, and a dear, caring person. “Marilyn will definitely leave a large void in my life, as well as in our club and the Lutz community,” Serio said. She was always thinking of others, even to the end, her sons said. One of her final requests was that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Little Women of Lutz, c/o Lutz Land O’ Lakes Women’s Club, P.O. Box 656, Lutz, Florida 33548-0656.

Summit addresses mental health challenges By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Overcoming mental health and substance abuse issues in local communities seems a daunting undertaking — but offering a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on may be a good place to start. At least that’s what a group of educators and faith-based leaders asserted at a recent mental health summit at Pasco-Hernando State College’s (PHSC) Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, in Wesley Chapel. The state college’s Bridging Faith and Mental Health Communities Summit brought together dozens of faith-based leaders, public and private clinical agencies, students, educators and community members. They discussed ongoing problems and solutions on topics such as depression, suicide and substance abuse, wellness and recovery. A plenary panel discussion addressed those topics head-on. University of South Florida philosophy and religious studies professor Garrett Potts tried to pinpoint the root of mental health issues. He suggested that depression and addiction have been exacerbated because there’s “a crisis of meaning” and “a loss of hope” in society and culture today. And, as a result, he said, people have turned to drugs and alcohol, as a coping mechanism. The panelist advised that if you think someone may be suffering from substance abuse or a mental health crisis, empathy and guidance without judgment can go a long way. “We have to be able to sort of lay our cards on the table and say, ‘Hey, I’m with you,’” Potts said. “Try at all costs to avoid the shame cycle that our fellow addicts and sufferers are already stuck in. They don’t need any more shame than they’re already placing on themselves.” He added,“A lot of times, what you hear with individuals who are struggling with suicide, is they’ve found themselves in a place where they’re isolated. Either something they’re struggling with is stigmatized to the point that they don’t feel loved, or

they feel like no one around them cares about them or can help them.” Another panelist, Dr. Eddie Williams, director of PHSC’s behavioral health department, pointed out those dealing with depression and suicide “often disengage from everybody” in their personal and social life, and in the workplace. Williams underscored the importance of reaching out before a particular mental illness worsens. A decreased functioning in everyday life and a general feeling of sadness are some warning signs to watch out for, he said. “We need to make sure that person gets reconnected,” Williams said, “to let them know that they’re loved and understood.” He added:“Don’t take no for an answer, if you start to see someone disengaging from life. Sometimes, it just takes that one act of courage and that could save someone’s life.” Williams also observed those who’ve successfully recovered from substance abuse or mental illness must “give it back and try to help someone else reach that level of recovery.” Williams added:“You’ve got to have that support from people who’ve been in similar situations.” Pastor Doug Zipperer, of Shady Hills’ United Methodist Church, called for more fellowship and outreach groups. He mentioned organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous do a good job of bringing people together and helping each other, so they’re not fighting mental health and addiction battles alone. Zipperer put it like this:“The words and encouragement and counsel of a real close

friend is probably more lasting than hours of clinical counseling or the professional help of somebody they don’t trust.” Another panelist, Taiwan Simmons, the co-founder of Inside Reach Ministries in Wesley Chapel, suggested there’s not a onesize-fits-all answer to people struggling with mental health issues and substance abuse. Offering care and affection to loved ones may not be enough, Simmons said. Still, the panelist said there’s a responsibility to reach out to those dealing with those troubles — even in the face of getting rejected by that person. “We have people who are hurting,” he said.“They need our prayer, they need our support, they need our attention, they need our encouragement. “You have to be engaged and you have to empower not just yourself, but the peo-

Tampa Bay Parade of Homes Showcases Bexley Community

I

t is estimated that homebuyers visit 10 homes before they find “The One.” Potential buyers will have a chance to walk through dozens of model homes at the annual Tampa Bay Parade of Homes, which is being held the first two weekends in March. This year, Bexley by Newland Communities will play a prominent role as the featured Showcase Community. Seven models representing three of Bexley’s award-winning builders will be on display during this popular twoweekend event. “We’re honored to be this year’s Showcase Community, and to have the opportunity to show potential homebuyers what the Bexley lifestyle has to offer,” said Pam Parisi, vice president of marketing for Newland Communities, developer of Bexley. The Parade of Homes is an exceptional time to see the floor plans, interior designs and architecture of model homes, which are also judged by a panel of industry experts. Featured homes in Bexley will include models from popular builders Cardel Homes, David Weekley Homes and Homes by WestBay. Parade visitors can tour Cardel Homes’ Henley and Savannah models. The two-story, four-bedroom Henley provides more than 3,900 square-feet of living space, while the four-bedroom Savannah floor plan features three baths and more than 3,300 square feet of living space in a single-story design. This popular builder’s newly designed Tangelo floor plan features four bedrooms and 3.5 baths in a single-story home with just over 3,000 square feet. The Sandpiper and Cypress models from Homes by WestBay offer stately four-bedroom and two to 2.5bathroom floor plans. The one-story Sandpiper provides just over 2,000 square feet and a two-car garage,

As one of Pasco County’s premier master-planned communities, homeowners at Bexley have access to a wide range of amenities and activities. The central hub of the community is The Bexley Club. This lakeside clubhouse is a popular meeting place for residents and the surrounding community. Many come in to enjoy great food at the Twisted Sprocket Café, which serves breakfast, gourmet lunches, desserts,

smoothies, wine, craft beer and coffee drinks. Next door to the clubhouse, Suncoast Trailside Bicycles sells a variety of bikes, including mountain and electric bikes, gear and clothing. The shop also offers repairs. If you’re looking to cycle around the community or hit the Bexley BMX pump track, you’ll find everything you need at this one-stop shop. In addition to two resort-style pools and a fitness center, residents also enjoy miles of multi-surface Avid™ trails, ideal for walking, biking, jogging and strollers. Fit Stations located along the trails add fun and variety to workouts. Want to know what it’s like to live at Bexley? Sign up for the “Resident for a Day” program, which lets prospective homebuyers utilize many of the community’s amenities to get a true feel for what it’s like to live there. “We love giving people an opportunity to experience life in Bexley firsthand. The Resident for a Day program gives prospective buyers an opportunity to enjoy the amenities, talk with residents, and see for themselves why so many families have chosen to make Bexley their home,” said Parisi. Bexley’s Parade of Home models are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., on Sunday. 93 Models To Tour In This Year’s Parade Of Homes

T

he 2019 Tampa Bay Parade of Homes, hosted by the Tampa Bay Builders Association (TBBA), takes place over the next two weekends — March 1 to March 3 and March 8 to March 10. This is one of the largest Parades in Florida, with 93 model homes representing 40 builders at locations throughout Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas Counties. The Parade of Homes is a hands-on way to see the latest in floor plans, interior designs and architecture styles of the area’s most prominent builders and developers. There is no cost or appointment needed to tour Parade homes. Included in today’s Laker/Lutz News is a 12-page Parade of Homes Guidebook, which gives detailed maps pinpointing the location of each Parade home. In Pasco and south Hernando counties, there are 40 homes to tour, and in north Hillsborough County, 12 homes. You can create a self-guided map of homes you want to tour at the Parade’s website, TampaBayParadeOfHomes.co m. You can also view individual model homes online by builder, as well as entries from custom builders and remodelers. A great place to start your tour is in Land O’ Lakes at the Parade’s showcase community of Bexley, a master-planned development by Newland Communities, located on State Road 54 and the Suncoast Parkway. Seven models representing three of Bexley’s award-winning builders are on display

during the Parade, with entries from Cardel Homes, David Weekley Homes and Homes by WestBay. “It is a great time to buy a new home in Tampa Bay with a wide range of price points, including very affordable options, Cheryl McCormick Brown, chairperson of the 2019 Parade of Homes. “The variety of plans, locations and price points that our 93 entries represent is truly indicative of the spectrum of buyers moving into this market every day. There truly is something for everyone at every life stage,” she said. Parade of Homes models are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Friday and Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m., on Sunday. During the Parade, home entries are judged by an expert panel of building industry professionals from across the country, who consider site plan, curb appeal, design, materials, outdoor living spaces, architectural detailing and workmanship. In addition to Bexley, other sponsors of the 2019 Tampa Bay Parade of Homes are MidFlorida Credit Union, TECO Peoples Gas, and Opendoor. The TBBA has more than 800 members from the local building industry, including builders, developers, suppliers, subcontractors, lending institutions, architectural and engineering firms, as well as other related businesses. The organization promotes professionalism and continuing education within the tricounty building and development industry. For further information, call (813) 571-TBBA, or visit TBBA.net.

Choose The Best Cardel Homes Community For You

C

ardel Homes is one of few builders to offer buyers communities of all sizes and price points — from moveup developments like Bexley with its many active living amenities, to those like the Enclave at Lake Padgett and Oakwood Reserve with acre lots, pristine privacy and luxury custom features. Here is a quick look at communities where Cardel Homes is building that are attracting buyers from Pasco and north Hillsborough counties.

THE ENCLAVE AT LAKE PADGETT

There are only a handful of lots remaining on Lake Padgett, which is why Cardel Homes is so excited to be building homes in the Enclave At Lake Padgett. This secluded, gated community of just 18 homes is conveniently located off U.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes, just two miles north of State Road 54. All homesites back up to a natural lagoon that flows into Lake Padgett, and all lots can be permitted for docks that are large enough for fishing, waterski and pontoon boats. “It’s almost unheard of to find new home construction on Lake Padgett, said Brian Phillips, vice president of sales and marketing at Cardel Homes. “We have eight large homesites remaining — all very private and perfect for families wanting a waterfront home with no CDD fees. Cardel Homes is offering three one-story plans at the Enclave, all with tile roofs and brick paver driveways as standard features. The Henley, Wesley and Savannah plans range from 3,000 to 3,308 square

feet, and offer four bedrooms, three or four baths and three-car garages. If your family is looking for a new home now, the St. Lucia model home is ready for a quick move-in. This stunning home is 3,336 square feet with 12-foot ceilings, white cabinetry, quartz countertops, wood-plank tile and tray ceilings in the foyer, bonus room and master bedroom. The four-bedroom, three-bath home is on a wooded lot with a large front porch and covered lanai. An oversized dock is perfect to dock a boat and enjoy the natural backyard setting. “Living in the Enclave is the best of both worlds — all the recreation that Lake Padgett offers in a private oasis setting, and the convenience of Land O’ Lakes’ central location and top-rated schools, said Phillips.

OAKWOOD RESERVE

If you’re looking for a new home in Hillsborough County that’s close to USF, Oakwood Reserve may be the perfect community for you. Only five lots remain in this exclusive community of 1-acre homesites on Clement Road — a quiet, rural street tucked between Hannah Road and Livingston Avenue. Oakwood Reserve is just 25 minutes to downtown Tampa, and minutes from Moffitt Cancer Center, James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital and AdventHealth Tampa. This rural community has lots ranging from 1 to 1.55 acres with magnificent mature trees. Two homesites have already been sold, and an inventory home is under construction and will be ready in May.

“Our first two buyers are young professionals who love the location and wanted a small community with no CDD or HOA fees, said Phillips. Homes in Oakwood Reserve begin at $447,90, and range from 2,507 to 3,393 square feet. All have four to five bedrooms, three to four baths and three-car garages.

BEXLEY

Cardel is being showcased in this year’s Parade of Homes over the next two weekends with two model homes in Bexley — a masterplanned community being developed by Newland Homes along the State Road 54 corridor in Land O’ Lakes. Parade visitors will be touring the Henley and Savannah models. The two-story, four-bedroom Henley provides more than 3,900 square feet of living space, while the fourbedroom Savannah floor plan features three baths and more than 3,300 square feet of living space in a single-story design. Both models have three-car garages and have been newly decorated. Cardel Homes has been building in Bexley since the community opened in 2016, and recently expanded into Phase 2A, with beautiful lots and floor plans beginning in the upper $300s. Two quick inventory homes are available in this new phase, as well as the St. Lucia model home in Bexley’s first phase. Bexley is known for its pools, parks and trail system designed for active family living. It encompasses 1,200 acres of preserved wilderness and 13 miles of breathtaking trails that connect to the renowned Suncoast Trail.

SANDHILL RIDGE

Located across the street from FishHawk Ranch in south Hillsborough County is Sandhill Ridge — one of Cardel Homes’ newest communities. This private, gated community of just 33 Cardel homes is selling quickly because of the affordability of its large family homes and its Arated schools. Prices begin in the high $200s for homes that range from 2,010 and 3,132 square feet. “We have already sold nine homes in Sandhill Ridge, and anticipate that this community will sell out quickly, said Phillips. “The land is beautiful, with a canopy of oak and pine trees, and people want to live in a quiet community like this with no CDD fees. Cardel Homes’ models are open Mondays through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.

Down Payment Assistance for First-Time Homebuyers

T

he Florida Housing Finance Corporation is re-launching the Florida Hardest-Hit Fund Down Payment Assistance Program in five approved counties, including Pasco and Hillsborough counties. This federal program was implemented to prevent foreclosures by stimulating home purchase activity and stabilizing neighborhoods in counties that demonstrate high levels of housing market distress. The program provides up to $15,000 in down payment and closing costs to eligible first-time homebuyers, and is forgivable over five years. Florida Housing has successfully disbursed 100 percent of the over $1 billion in program funds two years ahead of schedule, and is now using approximately $20 million in loan repayments to assist additional Florida families. “Statistics show that foreclosures have drastically decreased in

Florida and that our state has recovered from the housing crisis,” said Trey Price, executive director of Florida Housing. “This funding will further assist with the continued stabilization of recovering, distressed neighborhoods.” As of this past January, 52,742 Florida families have received assistance through Florida Housing programs, including more than 20,000 families who received down payment and closing cost assistance. It is estimated that approximately 1,500 eligible firsttime homebuyers will be assisted with this additional funding. Florida Housing was created by the Florida Legislature more than 35 years ago. It is the state’s housing finance agency that administers state and federal resources to help provide affordable homeownership and rental housing options for Florida residents. Mattamy Home’s Fabulous Spring Sales Event

W

ith two new townhome communities opening in Lutz and Citrus Park, Mattamy Homes is offering families special savings on new, quick move-in townhomes for a limited time only, including paying closing costs. A variety of three- and fourbedroom townhomes are available for move in this spring, at Avea Pointe in Lutz and Lakeview at Citrus Park.

NEW MODELS IN CITRUS PARK

Mattamy Homes been selling in Lakeview at Citrus Park in August, and already has sold more than 30 townhomes. And now, with the opening of three new, professionally decorated models, Mattamy expects sales to move even faster in this gated community off Ehrlich Road and the Veterans Expressway. “Lakeview at Citrus Park is one of the prettiest and most convenient locations in the north Tampa area,” said Kathleen Dec, marketing manager for Mattamy Homes. “Our homeowners love being so close to Westfield Citrus Park Mall, and value their easy access to the Veterans and downtown Tampa.” New models are beautifully decorated and furnished, and feel just as spacious and private as single-family homes. The Marianna (1,667 sq. ft.) and Ormond (1,888 sq. ft.) have 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and single garages. The Venice (2,574 sq. ft.) has 4 bedrooms, including one downstairs, 3 baths and a double garage. Prices begin in the mid $200s. The community, which will have 124 townhomes when completed, overlooks Gant Lake at the end of Tom Fuller Road. Residents have access to the lake for fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding from its community pier. Other amenities include a children’s playground.

AVEA POINTE IN LUTZ

Avea Pointe is Mattamy Homes’ newest townhome neighborhood in Lutz, located off Van Dyke Road on

Townhomes by Mattamy Homes offer spacious floor plans and two-car garages.

Lakeshore Drive, and directly across from Lakeshore Preserve —a Mattamy townhome community that sold out in less than 18 months. “The demand for our townhomes in Lakeshore Preserve was so incredible that we’re very happy to be offering families more townhomes in the same great location,” said Dec. Avea Pointe’s first residents will be moving into their new homes this spring. The community’s amenities will be ready this fall, and include a resort-style pool, cabana and sun deck. At completion, Avea Pointe will have 224 homes. This gated community offers three spacious floor plans designed to live like single-family homes, incorporating large open kitchens, optimized living spaces, covered lanais and 2-car garages. Avea Pointe offers very distinctive

plans— the Santa Rosa at 1,913 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 2.5 baths, with an owner’s suite on the first level; the Sebring at 2,230 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths; and the Venice at 2,574 square feet with 4 bedrooms (including a first-floor bedroom) and 3 baths. Base prices are from the low $300s. “We offer some of the most spacious townhome floor plans in the area,” said Dec. “Their unique designs meet the needs of first-time homebuyers, families with children and empty-nesters.”

IN DEMAND LOCATION

Mattamy’s Lutz communities are just minutes from St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, and are convenient to shopping, dining and entertainment in Carrollwood, Lutz, Land O’ Lakes and Wesley Chapel. Located within

two miles of the Veterans Expressway makes them an easy commute to Tampa, the airport and area beaches. “This desirable location is one of the main reasons our homes at Lakeshore Preserve and Avea Pointe are selling so quickly,” said Dec. “Excellent schools are another reason — parents want their children to attend the area’s best schools.” Children at Lakeshore Preserve and Avea Pointe attend Steinbrenner High, Martinez Middle and Schwarzkopf Elementary, all less than three miles away on Lutz Lake Fern Road. Also close-by is the Sunlake Academy of Math and Science charter school. Visit MattamyHomes.com, or call (813) 580-7303, to learn more about these communities, the Spring Sales Event, or to schedule a VIP appointment.

58 Years of Experience at Shell’s Feed & Garden Supply

I

n a time when many families are exploring sustainability and growing their own food, a family operation like Shell’s Feed & Garden Supply is just the kind of store they need to answer their questions and guide them. “Whether it’s backyard chickens or growing vegetables, our employees are an amazing resource for families who have limited experience in gardening or raising chickens,” said Greg Shell, whose family has owned Tampa’s oldest feed store since 1961. “Most of our employees have worked here for many years, and have an incredible amount of experience to share with customers,” said Shell. “Our customers come from as far away as Brooksville and Sarasota, not only because of the quality plants and products we carry, but also to seek advice from our staff.” Shell’s Feed got its start when Greg’s father, Charles, was 21 years old and just out of the Army. It was 1961, and Charles was looking for something to do when a feed store came up for sale at Nebraska Avenue and Busch Boulevard in Tampa. Charles bought the store and changed its name to Shell’s Feed. “It was a good fit for my dad, since my grandfather sold Purina products for many years, and dad was familiar with the feed business. Plus, our family’s farm was in Lutz, and the store was close to our home,” said Shell. Charles began updating the store, and in 1965 married Betty Tamargo, whose family owned a dairy farm off Casey Road in what is now Carrollwood. Back then, Tampa Bay was still very rural, and Shell’s Feed took care of farmers and ranchers in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Polk counties. “Dad started selling to Busch Gardens when it was just a two-man operation in the 1960s, and also serviced Hillsborough and Pinellas County Animal Services,” said Shell. The city grew up around the feed store, and when Busch Boulevard was widened in 1967, the store moved four blocks north to its current location on Nebraska Avenue. Shell’s first job at the store was pick-

ing up trash in the parking lot when he was 8 years old for 25 cents a day. As he got older, he began stocking shelves after school, and eventually became a manager at age 20. Shell left the family business for eight years in 1999 to open a pet store in Lutz. By 2007, his parents wanted to be less hands-on at the feed store, and he returned to the family business.

GARDENING AND PETS

“When I came back, I spent the first six months as a regular employee, helping customers and asking what they liked about the store, and what they wanted to see,” said Shell. “This was when I learned our customers were very interested in gardening, and wanted

more offerings in pet foods and supplies, so we expanded in both areas.” “We carry pet food that is equal in quality to the brand names, but without the high prices,” said Shell. “We also sell a wide assortment of bulk treats, so you don't have to buy a whole bag, like you do at most stores.” Shell said many pets today have allergies, and most are food related. “We have hypo-allergenic dog foods that work great and won't break the bank,” he said. Gardening is also a big part of Shell’s business. “Our vegetable plants are grown by a local grower, and are healthier than those sold in big box stores,” said Shell. “Our staff can answer questions on gar-

Since many customers are inexperienced gardeners, and many want to learn how to raise chickens in their backyard, Shell’s offers Saturday classes for its customers. Its next class is March 9, and the topic is growing and harvesting Earthbox gardens, which are ideal for suburban patios and urban balconies. The class is from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration and information for all classes and events are at www.shellsfeed.com/store-classes-events/. Shell’s also hosts free Saturday Seed Swaps once a month from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., for most of the year. The next two Swaps are March 23 and April 20. “Our Seed Swaps are a great way to swap seeds, cuttings and seedlings for something new. Plus, it's a great way to meet people who also love to garden,” said Shell. Through the years, chicken feed has always been Shell’s top seller, although much of today’s feed now goes to families with backyard chickens. “Chickens are very easy to take care of. A family of four can keep three hens and have all the fresh eggs their family needs,” said Shell. Shell’s Feed & Garden Supply is still the old-fashioned, down-home shop Greg's parents started, but with products and services suburban families want today, including online ordering and shipping. “We invite you to bring the kids and visit our store for an old fashion experience that the whole family will enjoy,” said Shell.

Sharing the love

The GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club has already had a busy 2019. After a successful book drive, the club donated 155 books to two local Title 1 elementary schools, including Mort Elementary and Lacoochee Elementary, as well as Palmetto Elementary in Orlando. The club also engaged in several service projects in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day; members collected magazines and delivered them to local laundromats; volunteered at the Light Up the Night 5K race and 1-mile walk, an event to bring awareness to human trafficking; and made 750 valentines that were delivered by Meals on Wheels. Above, The GFWC New Tampa Juniorettes (ages 12 to 18) made a visit to the residents at Legacy at Highwoods Preserve, an assisted-living facility, for a ‘Share the Love’ event. Residents were given homemade valentines and goody bags. For information, visit GFWCNewTampaJuniors.org.

the county’s South Market area and is suitable for the proposed planned development designation. The South Market Area, according to planners, “is envisioned as ‘an urban gateway opportunity area.’” The proposed uses also coincide with a county policy that promotes the creation of high-density mixed uses that attract a broad spectrum of employers and businesses, offer opportunities for people to live and work in the same area, and offer maximized transportation opportunities. No one spoke against the proposal at the board’s Feb. 19 meeting. Clarke Hobby, the attorney representing the applicant, told commissioners “What you’re doing today is setting up Cypress Creek Town Center for success over the next 15 to 20 years, until its ultimate buildout.”

Blanket Tampa Bay Hopes To Build Urban Rest Stop By William Jacko Special to The Laker / Lutz News Beth Ross dreams of building the first Urban Rest Stop in Tampa — a place where the homeless and working poor can use restrooms, take showers and launder clothes, and eventually get haircuts, conduct job searches, and access financial and mental health counseling. Until that dream becomes a reality, Beth and her husband, Ray, will continue to help the homeless through Blanket Tampa Bay, a nonprofit they founded to feed the homeless and distribute blankets, toiletries and bicycles. Although they did not realize it at the time, the couple’s Urban Rest Stop dream began five years ago while they were attending Oakwood Community Church in Carrollwood. “The church had a really large donation,” Beth said. “They gave every family in the church a hundred dollars, and said, ‘Go do something good with this.’” Since Beth Ross hates cold weather, she decided to give blankets to the homeless for warmth, padding and protection against insects. She created a Blanket Tampa Bay Facebook page, and with the church’s seed money, distributed more than 1,000 blankets the first two years. In time, the Rosses expanded their mission from blankets to hygiene products, bicycles and other items the homeless need. Their volunteer work attracted the attention of corporate sponsors, including the New York Yankees, who donated $10,000. That donation inspired the couple to explore new ways to help the homeless, which led them to Seattle to tour the country’s first Urban Rest Stop. When Beth speaks to groups about Blanket Tampa Bay, she tells stories of unexpected blessings, happy endings and new beginnings —stories that motivate people to act. One of her favorite stories is about a homeless man she passed on her way to work who hadn’t moved from the same bench in several days. He repeatedly rejected Beth’s offers of help, so she asked a police officer to check on him. The officer was able to involuntarily commit the man to St. Joseph’s Hospital for

medical evaluation, where he was treated for a broken hip and kidney failure. “He was in so much pain that he couldn’t move off that bench,” Beth speculated. She soon learned the man’s backstory. He had worked for Pinellas County Schools for more than 30 years and was entitled to a pension that he was not receiving. Social services intervened and helped him get his pension, and today he is healthy and living in an apartment. Had Beth not intervened, the man would have likely died on the street, virtually invisible, amidst the averted eyes of hundreds of people waiting at the nearby bus stop or driving by. “That man wasn’t a bum. He wasn’t an alcoholic. He wasn’t doing drugs or anything. All it takes is one life-changing event to be homeless,” Beth said. On Monday nights the Rosses serve the homeless in the parking lot at St. Peter Claver Church, located at 1203 Nebraska Ave., from 7 p.m. to 8p.m. “We serve about a 160 to 180 homeless people every week,” Beth said. “There are so many men, women and children out there who are homeless and need help. I can’t wait to build an Urban Rest Stop so the homeless have a place to clean up, use the bathroom and launder their clothes.” To learn more about Blanket Tampa Bay, and to donate, visit BlanketTampaBay.org, or call Beth at (813) 300-9277.

UNION PARK CELEBRATES ITS SCHOOL

In the few months that Union Park Charter Academy (UPCA) in Wesley Chapel has been open, there have been many exciting events and accomplishments. The Kinder Community at Union Park celebrated 100 Days of School with crafts, individually decorated Tshirts, and a parade through the corridors met with cheers from the upper grades and staff. The school’s soccer team led by Coach Frank Richardson had its first win against Hillsborough Academy of Math and Science. Fifth- and sixth-graders received a visit by the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a federally chartered nonprofit youth organization for youth ages 10 to 17. The UPCA’s Jr. Thespians team, under the direction of Myndee Washington, received five medals in competition in Orlando. And, gifted students are exploring and researching ways to help provide clean water, preparing lessons about electricity for younger students, and investigating their own curiosities. The school serves kindergarten through sixth grade for the current school year, but will be adding seventh and eighth grades in the upcoming two academic years. For information, call Danielle Rosario at (813) 358-7306, ext. 1008.

Earth Fare’s opening festivities included a ribbon cutting. Shown here, are the dignitaries involved in that ceremony. They are second from left, is store manager Mike Hall; President and CEO Frank Scorpiniti; North Tampa Bay Chamber President /CEO Hope Allen; and Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore; while others look on.

EARTH FARE, from page 1A and within weeks will open stores in Boynton Beach and downtown Orlando. “We see an opportunity for our brand to fill a void in the marketplace,” Scorpiniti said. “Americans, just generally, are seeking healthier alternatives to feed their families and their children,” Scorpiniti explained.“We have found that there is a lot of need of what we bring to communities. “We don’t want to be preachy. That’s not our mission here. Our mission is to make health and wellness easy to come by, at Earth Fare,” he said. “Our first litmus test is whether or not what we sell is healthy,” he added. If it’s not, it doesn’t make the cut. The grocery chain’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Angela Hind helps assure that Earth Fare meets that commitment, Scorpiniti said. “She and I have become very close colleagues in helping refine Earth Fare’s assortment, and understanding that this is a journey. We’re all learning still. But, when we look across North America, no one else is doing this,” Scorpiniti said.

READING LABELS NOT REQUIRED

Earth Fare pledges that its foods are free

of: • Added hormones • Antibiotics • Artificial fats and trans-fats • High fructose corn syrup • Artificial preservatives • Bleached or bromated flour • Artificial colors or flavors The grocer also maintains a Boot List on its website, listing all of the food ingredients it has banned from its stores. Besides the groceries it sells, the store has an organic juice bar, a salad bar, a hot foods bar, a pizza station, a sandwich counter and packaged meals-to-go. It also has a café. People might not view pizza as being healthy, Scorpiniti said. But, Earth Fare’s version is made with organic dough. It uses sauce with tomatoes from Italy, when the tomatoes are at their sweetest — foregoing the common practice of adding sugar to the sauce. The cheese comes from Italy, too, and the pepperoni has no nitrates or nitrites, Scorpiniti said. “Dare I say, it’s an amazing-tasting pizza,” he added. On opening day, customers appeared to be enthusiastic about having a new grocery option. “It’s proximity is really great,” said Lynn Pabst, who is retired and lives in Lutz.“To be able to get things that are fresh and healthy, and to promote that kind of style of living is very important, and it’s nice to have in our community.” C. Walker, who lives in Wesley Chapel, likes the choices that the store offers. “I’m a plant-based eater, and they have everything I need in this store,” she said, adding that now she won’t have to drive out her community to get what she wants. Interest in the store was apparent in the early afternoon on Day 2, when it buzzed with customers. Shoppers perused shelves. They added fruits, vegetables, rotisserie

Earth Fare, a 24,000-square-foot healthy food supermarket WHERE: 25535 Sierra Center Blvd., in Lutz HOURS: 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., daily DETAILS: The store offers a wide selection of healthy fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and other foods. Its services include delivery and catering. Earth Fare’s Lutz/Wesley Chapel location opened last week. It has 107 employees.

Earth Fare: • Uses the heat generated from cooling its freezers and refrigerators to heat its water • Has polished concrete floors to eliminate the need for harsh cleaning chemicals • Is built with a reflective roof to reduce cooling costs in warmer months • Uses LED bulbs, which consume 60 percent to 75 percent less energy • Uses pure water, filtered through reverse osmosis, throughout the store — including in its produce misters

chickens and other items to their carts. Others took a break to grab a bite, and ate it on the patio. Earth Fare has come a long way since it debuted in Asheville, as a 1,200-square-foot store called Dinner for Earth. It was the city’s first health food store, and it offered a modest selection of organic dried bulk goods and wellness process. Over time, it has opened locations from Portage, Michigan to Palm Beach Gardens. Its assortment has evolved, but its commitment to healthy food has not wavered, Scorpiniti said. The grocer promises its customers that they can shop in every aisle of the store without ever needing to read a label, and they can be confident that their food selection will be healthy, the executive added. He also touched on what he considers to be a misperception when it comes to the price of healthy foods. “I think health and wellness eating has sometimes created this connotation that you have to pay a lot more to be healthy in the food you buy,” Scorpiniti said. Earth Fare thinks it can provide, with a curated assortment in a 24,000-square-foot store, “a nice, bright, shoppable, friendly store,” and do it efficiently, in order to sell a 98-cent, non-GMO, baguette, every day, and a $5 rotisserie chicken, every day, she said As a newcomer to the area, the company also has reached out to learn what the community needs from Earth Fare, Scorpiniti said. It has a 19-member community advisory board, which provided suggestions regarding items to stock on store shelves, and offered input on what local cause the store should support. In this case, it is the New Tampa YMCA, which received a $3,000 check from the grocer. When Earth Fare opens a new location, it’s a big day for the company, the president and CEO said. He said he typically gives the new team a pep talk. In essence, his message to them is this: “This is a different mission. It looks like we’re selling groceries, but we’re changing lives.”

See Better. Live Better.™ Established in 1981

The key is for a Big to be a positive mentor to a child of the same gender – being a confidant, helping with academics and having fun. “We don’t just play in the park – we’re learning about volunteerism, citizenship, respect [and] responsibility,” Howie explained. “Apparently that’s something that other people are looking at and saying ‘Hey, that’s cool stuff that you’re doing.’” Before meeting Hunter, Howie said he’d suffered the passing of his younger brother, Chris, in 2014. Howie and his wife also became emptynesters, when their two daughters moved away from home. So when the 52-year-old spotted a flyer for Big Brothers Big Sisters at a local Dairy Queen, he was curious. He decided to attend a volunteer orientation and was instantly hooked. “This sounds like an amazing idea,” Howie thought to himself.“This is going to fill that void I had in my life.” The program’s match specialist soon paired Howie with Hunter – a then shy 13year-old with an affinity for video games. Hunter also had experienced a shift in his family: His older brother had left home for college. Howie initially met Hunter and his family at their Land O’ Lakes home. Hunter recalls that first meeting. “There was a strong bond from the beginning, but it got better over time,” Hunter said. For their first adventure, Howie found a way to get Hunter more engaged outdoors. He took him to a local park in Land O’ Lakes to fly a drone — something Howie uses in his work. Hunter was more than happy to take the drone for several spins. “I’m a programmer by trade,” Howie said. “Obviously I swell with pride when it’s something he’s interested in, too.” Since then, Hunter’s Big has helped him to see there’s a whole outdoor world waiting to be explored. They have enjoyed deep sea fishing together, have attended charity walks, have gone to amusement parks, have watched baseball games and have gone to concerts, to name just some of their activities. They’ve also adopted a signature look: Wearing fedora hats just about everywhere they go. And, Howie got Hunter involved with the Krewe of Blackbeard’s Revenge – an organization that raises funds for charities every month.

The group also participates in the Gasparilla Kids’ Parade – where the two brothers dress in full costume. “He makes a great pirate,” Howie said, with a chuckle. Food is another common interest for the Big and Little. They took a six-week cooking course, allowing them to prepare and taste new recipes. They acknowledge that, as pizza lovers, they were reluctant to add spinach as a topping, but they said, the taste grew on them. While they enjoy having fun, Howie is also ready to help Hunter with homework so he maintains good grades. “I was struggling with ASL (American Sign Language),” the teen recounted. “We both watched it together and figured it out.” Howie said that he wants Hunter to become a well-rounded adult. He takes Hunter to autism and cancer walks not only to be charitable, but also to help him develop a sense of gratitude for what he has in life. The mentor also teaches the importance of financial responsibility and punctuality. But, Hunter isn’t the only one on the receiving end. Howie has also learned valuable lessons, too. The friendship has helped him to become more patient and a better listener. “I wait for him to ask for advice,” Howie said.“Sometimes he doesn’t need somebody to solve a problem for him. Sometimes he just needs somebody to listen to him.” He also credits Hunter for giving him a chance to feel like a kid again. During their three-year friendship, Howie has watched Hunter grow physically, and in other ways, too. “I saw a lot of myself, when I was that age, in him,” Howie stated. Later this year, the pair will attend a Big Brothers Big Sisters bowling event. Such fundraisers help raise money, but state funding is needed, too. Howie plans to visit Tallahassee to speak with legislators, to seek more state assistance for the program. Both Howie and Hunter are also looking forward to being recognized at an awards ceremony in September. Both plan to don tuxedos. They’re also now eligible to compete for the Big Brother and Little Brother national award. No matter how that goes though, they both feel like they’ve already won the best prize: The mentorship program may have brought them together, but they’re confident they’ll be lifelong friends. Locals named to All-State football teams By Kevin Weiss

2018 FloridaHSFootball.com All-State teams

A

thletes within The Laker/Lutz News coverage were well-represented on the FloridaHSFootball.com’s AllState teams for the 2018

season. In total, 24 players from nine local schools in Hillsborough and Pasco counties were named first-team, second-team, thirdteam or honorable mention for their respective classifications. The All-State teams were compiled by FloridaHSFootball.com, along with the consideration of coaches nominations and consultation of all-area/all-county teams and members of the media from around the state. Zephyrhills High School and Zephyrhills Christian Academy were most represented among local schools, with five selections apiece to the Class 5A and Class 2A All-State teams, respectively. Zephyrhills High — which went undefeated in the regular season and reached the Class 5A regional semifinals — had two first-team selections (senior defensive tackle Samuel Bergeron, senior returner/athlete Cartrell Strong), a second-team selection (senior utility Tre’ Pavis Mobley), and two honorable mentions (senior quarterback Doug Crawford and junior offensive guard Demetris Wright). Bergeron, though undersized at 5-feet-9 and 192 pounds, registered big numbers with 104 total tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 15 sacks, 21 hurries and eight forced fumbles. The same can be said for fellow Bulldogs first-teamer, Strong. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound returner/athlete finished the 2018 campaign with 1,709 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns. Also a defensive standout at cornerback/safety, Strong added 98 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two interceptions, nine passes defensed and three forced fumbles. Mobley, the Bulldogs second-teamer, also generated impressive numbers on each side of the ball. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound athlete registered 51 tackles, four interceptions and four passes defensed on defense, and 759 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns on offense. He also served as the team’s kickoff specialist, where he averaged nearly 39 yards per kick and had three touchbacks. Zephyrhills Christian — which finished with a 7-4 mark and reached the Class 2A regional semifinals — had two first-team selections (senior utility Javion Hanner, senior cornerback Kavbion Marbra) and three second-team selections (junior offensive guard Malik Jones, senior defensive end Jalen Spencer, senior outside linebacker Nyjohn Moody). The 5-foot-9, 188-pound Hanner posted 1,408 scrimmage yards and nine touchdowns in 10 games played. His 1,201 rushing yards ranked sixth in all of Class 2A.

Confederate Soldiers fire during a Civil War battle re-enactment at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village in Dade City.

Civil War history comes to life at Pioneer Florida Museum & Village The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

C

ivil War buffs had a chance to see history come to life at the Pioneer Florida Village & Museum over the weekend. Re-enactors also had a chance to take part in battles and skirmishes on the museum grounds. The sounds of soldiers shouting commands and the smoke from firing guns

filled the air. Little ones shielded their ears to avoid the loud sounds of the guns. Besides seeing the soldiers in action, visitors could tour confederate and union camps, see re-enactors in character and get a glimpse of Civil War life. They also could see traditional period demonstrations and a ladies fashion show feature clothing from that period. There was live music, too.

Portraying a Confederate courier, Chuck Sheridan, of Sanford, delivers a message to Gen. Harding.

From the audience area, Samantha Johnston, of Seffner, portrays a Southern Belle. She was applauding the efforts of the 5th Florida Company B, at the end of the Civil War reenactment event.

The trio, 7 lbs of Bacon, entertained the crowd by playing music of the 1800s.

The Union soldiers defeated the Confederate soldiers on one day of the two-day event, and the Confederate soldier defeated the Union soldiers on the other day.

Six-year-old Gregory Jacobsen holds his ears during the booming sounds coming from the 12-pound Mountain Howitzers. This was the young boy’s first experience of seeing a Civil War re-enactment. He was there with his dad, Benjamin Jacobsen, of Tampa.

Mickey is in training Mickey is a 5-month-old goldendoodle. He is in training and working hard to be a service dog. Mickey enjoys going to Petco and visiting with his trainer, Slyvie, and loves playing fetch in the backyard. Mickey is shown here with his mom, Melissa Murphy. Other proud family members include dad Justin Teisch, brother Gavin Murphy, and sister Gabriella Teisch, of Wesley Chapel.

Orion is waiting for you Orion is a handsome 5-year-old pup that arrived at the end of January. He loves attention from the staff and volunteers, and enjoys a good scratch under his neck. Orion, who weighs about 50 pounds, is a great size pup for anyone. He is heartworm positive, but this is something that can be treated. Interested adopters can speak with a staff member about the treatment options that may be available with their veterinarian.

If you would like to adopt Orion or Virgo, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes.
