Lawsuit challenges road extension

By Brian Fernandes bfernandes@lakerlutznews.com

The Sierra Club Florida Conservation has filed a lawsuit against the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers for issuing a permit to Pasco County, to allow the construction of an extension of Ridge Road. The legal action aims to halt the project, which is a 9-mile corridor that would add

an additional transportation link in the county. The extension would give another option to motorists who now travel east-west across the county, using State Road 54 and State Road 52. The new link will reduce traffic on those other corridors, and it provides another evacuation route in the event of an emergency, according to Pasco County officials.

Plans call for the corridor to be lengthened from New Port Richey to the Suncoast Parkway, then further east to U.S. 41. Ridge Road also would extend through the Serenova Tract of the Starkey Wilderness Preserve. Currently, land is being cleared to establish what will be the new roadway, heading See LAWSUIT, page 11A

Seed library debuts in Land O’ Lakes

Library patrons can now learn how to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers at home, plus get some free seeds to start their garden. The Land O’ Lakes Branch Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, debuted its Seed Library on Jan. 21. Patrons can select seeds from within the library’s collection and find the growing instructions for them on the outside of the packet. The library’s website has a list of the seeds that are available. The donated seeds are courtesy of True Leaf Market, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, Burpee Gardens, BBB Seed Heirloom Vegetable & Wildflower Seeds, and the Friends of the Library. For more information, visit PascoLibraries.org/services/seed-library/. Above, Catherine Seavey, the adult services librarian at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library, reads through the seed binder located at the library’s new Seed Library. The binder, provided by UF/IFAS Extension, contains detailed information on the various types of seeds offered through this new program. Seavey was one of the people responsible for bringing the program to the library.

If you’re a local and a fan of the movie, “Edward Scissorhands,” you may already know that much of the movie was filmed in the Carpenters Run neighborhood of Lutz. Of course, Carpenters Run no longer boasts the bright pastel-colored homes or topiaries featured in the film, but Kenny Caperton, of On Set Cinema, plans to bring elements of the movie to life in a special event planned for the evening of April 25. Caperton, who created On Set Cinema, describes himself as a “cinema dork.” He’s been visiting filming locations for about 20 years, and a couple of years ago, he said:“I got this fun, crazy idea:Wouldn’t it be cool to show movies where they were actually filmed?“ He knows that’s not an original idea, but he said,“as far as I know, there’s never been a film series that exclusively does this.” So, over the past two years, he’s arranged a couple of dozen screening events at filming locations for movies. Saint Leo University will soon be home to a sprawling $20 million wellness center —integrating student recreation, fitness, health services, counseling services and campus ministry. A groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month celebrated the forthcoming 59,000square-foot wellness center, to be situated on the west end of the campus by Lake Jovita. Construction tentatively will begin in April, and university officials hope to open the wellness center in fall 2021. The new facility will provide space for group exercise, spinning and yoga classes, and a large community fitness center. There also will be two indoor basketball courts, an See WELLNESS, page 11A

The Aldi store in Odessa is expected to open this spring, and the Wesley Chapel store is expected to open by this summer. That’s according to the latest information provided by Matt Thon, the vice president for the Haines City Aldi division. An opening date for the Aldi in Zephyrhills has not been determined. The Zephyrhills branch has not been built yet, says Todd Vande Burg, planning director for the City of Zephyrhills. Work is underway to analyze the best relocation spot for traffic lights at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Pretty Pond Road,Vande Burg said. The Aldi stores in Odessa, at 12134 State

Road 54, and in the Lutz-Wesley Chapel area, at 2215 Sun Vista Drive, combined, are planning to hire 20 to 25 employees. The Aldi website has information about available positions, explains the anticipated number of working hours, and details starting pay rates. Openings include store associates, cashiers and stockers. The website details duties for the various positions and qualifications needed for the job. There also is information about benefits offered by Aldi and tutorial videos that give applicants an idea of what to expect. The three new Pasco County Aldi stores will join the over 1,900 grocers nationwide. To learn more about job opportunities, visit Aldi.us.

Portions of U.S. 41 soon will be repaved, or will have new landscaping, on the corridor, which runs through Lutz and Land O’ Lakes. In Land O’ Lakes, resurfacing will be done on U.S. 41, to give motorists a smoother ride between Ehren Cutoff and Caliente Boulevard. Repaving began last summer and includes both sides of the four-lane stretch – divided by a median. The $2.5-million project also includes a sidewalk on the west side of U.S. 41, where it intersects with Lake Bambi Circle and Gator Lane. It also incorporates a shared use path

along the east side of U.S. 41, where it intersects with Caliente Boulevard and Carriker Road. Plans also call for minor drainage modifications. Roadwork is occurring during the day and evening, with lane closures. The Lutz project involves new landscaping at the apex of U.S. 41 and North Florida Avenue, to create a more inviting entry into Lutz or Tampa, depending which way you are driving. The $500,000 project began in January. New landscaping is being installed in the medians, which includes native trees, palms, shrubs and groundcover, surrounded by decorative wood fencing. Both projects are scheduled to be completed by spring.

Renowned rabbi lectures on faith, prophets By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

Rabbi Jack Bemporad is one of three rabbis who blessed Pope John II before his death. He also had a personal audience with Pope John XXIII. And, he is the first person to receive an honorary doctorate degree from Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome since its founding in 1577. Earlier this month, the renowned religious scholar led a discussion at Saint Leo University on the topic of faith and message of the prophets — through the college’s Center for Catholic-Jewish Studies. His talk centered mainly around the Book of Amos, the first prophetic book of the Bible to be written. In the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament,Amos was one of the Twelve Minor Prophets. An older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, Amos was active during the rule of kings Jeroboam II and Uzziah. He was from the southern Kingdom of Judah but preached in the northern Kingdom of Israel. Bemporad outlined Amos’ series of teachings that began around 750 B.C., in the northern Kingdom of Israel, where he claimed to have been selected by God to spread his word and confront sinners — specifically judges and leadership who accepted bribes and exploited others. Bemporad pointed out Amos is credited as “the first person ever in history” to condemn a society that is unjust and takes advantage of the vulnerable, the poor and needy, and so on. The prophet also foretold the northern Kingdom of Israel would one day be destroyed, because of their behavior of “trusting in weapons,” Bemporad said. The kingdom was destroyed about 30 years later, in 722 B.C. Said Bemporad, “If you trust in weapons, guess what? There’s no end to that.” The scholar explained people in that era believed “the day of the Lord” was a day when your country wins all its battles and conquers all its enemies. Amos, however, preached the “day of the Lord,” in its ultimate sense, is a time “when all human

beings live a life of peace and tranquility,” Bemporad said. The rabbi circled it back to present times:“Imagine you could live a life where you don’t have to worry that we’re building trillions of dollars’ worth of nuclear weapons, that we’re not making all kinds of wars and guns so that we can destroy each other, (but) we can really sit and no one be afraid.” Bemporad mentioned Amos, too, spoke out against animal sacrifices to God — which was a groundbreaking position at that time. In those days, the priests’ main function was to offer as many animal sacrifices as possible, mainly to absolve sins of the wealthy, Bemporad said. The religious scholar observed,“They felt by offering animal sacrifices to God, they were fine,‘Why do I have to worry about the poor and needy, if I’m offering up sacrifice?’”

But,Amos felt and expressed it differently.

GOD IS INTERESTED IN JUSTICE Bemporad explained:“He’s the first person in history to say,‘God’s not interested in sacrifices. God’s interested in justice and righteousness.’That’s a revelation. That’s an absolute revelation. All the other prophets, in one form or another, say something similar to that.” Bemporad went on to explain the prophet deals with “a fundamental, more profound problem” throughout his teachings: “If you continue living a detestable lifestyle, you will no longer have access to that which is spiritually nourishing.” Otherwise known as “the great despair,” the rabbi put Amos’ sentiments in different terms. “Because you pursue exploitation, and wealth and bribery, and lying and cheating,

and all that,” Bemporad said, “you won’t have access to God, because it’s not that God isn’t available, it’s that you’re not allowing God to be available.” It’s a dilemma that proves to be a major theme throughout the Bible, Bemporad said. “You have so many instances in the Bible where people find, because of the way they live their life, that their habits become such that they sort of have an overlay that prevents them from really experiencing real life in anything that is truly meaningful and truly life — which is that we’re standing up for something that is just and true, and we’re connecting to what is true and what is real,” he said. Put another way, Bemporad said biblical history is simply about,“how do we relate to God, and how do we relate to our fellow human beings?” Beyond that, Bemporad stated everything else in this world should be treated as secondary. He put it like this:“Who cares about the politicians? Who cares about all the businesses? Who cares about all the voyeurism that we see in the press and on TV? Is that really real? Is that really truth? Seek the truth, and it’ll make you free. And, the Bible is the path to find it.” Bemporad then challenged the audience to spend the rest of their lives studying the Bible. Of the Bible, he said:“It’s something that you will never fully understand, because it’s too profound, it’s too deep. It’s not only a word of wisdom, but in our respective (Jewish) religion, we believe that it contains in some form or another the word of God, and so anything that has that wisdom to it… is the sort of thing we have to approach it, with first, humility; second, respect; and thirdly, a real sense that if we understand it, if we spend time with it, we will benefit greatly from it.” Bemporad currently is director of the nonprofit Center for Interreligious Understanding (CIU) in New Jersey, which he founded in 1992. He also is director of the John Paul II Center and professor of interreligious studies, both at the Vatican and St.Thomas Aquinas University in Rome.

NATURE NOTES

Protect your palms against disease By Nicole Pinson Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Many palm species are now listed as susceptible to the disease called lethal bronzing. Lethal Bronzing Disease was formerly known as Texas Phoenix Palm Decline. When we first learned about Lethal Bronzing Disease, we knew beautiful (and often expensive) palms of the Phoenix species, such as Canary Island Date palms (Phoenix canariensis), Sylvester palms (Phoenix sylvestris) and pygmy date palms (Phoenix roebelenii), as well as our native cabbage palms (Sabal palmetto), were the top species affected by this disease. But, recently, University of Florida/Institute of Agricultural and Sciences researchers updated the list of palms that may test positive for the disease. The expanded list includes Christmas palms (also known as Adonidia palms), Bismarck palms, coconut palms, Chinese fan palms and queen palms. Hillsborough and Pasco counties are

among several other Florida counties with confirmed cases of Lethal Bronzing Disease. These types of palms are hosts for Lethal Bronzing Disease: Christmas, Bismarck, Pindo, Carpentaria, Coconut, Chinese Fan, Canary Island Date, Edible Date, Pygmy Date, Wild Date, Fiji Fan, Buccaneer, Mexican Palmetto, Cabbage, Queen and Chinese Windmill. If you have one of these palms, it is important to keep an eye on it and check for disease symptoms. The disease is caused by a phytoplasma, a type of bacteria that doesn’t have a cell wall. The phytoplasma is transmitted to the sap of palms by insects, such as planthoppers, when the insects feed on the palms. The disease cannot be transmitted by pruning tools. Symptoms of the disease include fruit drop; discoloration of the oldest (lowest) leaves; brown or dead flower clusters; the collapse of the spear leaf at the top of the palm (newest leaf); and, quick decline (usually about four months to five months). To test for Lethal Bronzing Disease, sub-

mit a trunk sample for testing to the UF/IFAS Plant Diagnostic Center, and follow the palm trunk sampling instructions available at this link: https://plantpath.ifas.ufl.edu/misc/media/P DC/palmsampling.pdf. The cost is $80 per sample. The lab will provide a report about whether the palm is diseased. If you have susceptible palms without symptoms of the disease, you may inoculate them preventatively with an antibiotic called oxytetracycline. This may be done by a professional landscape company or by an arborist. Homeowners may choose to inoculate their own palms, and there are instructions available and companies online that sell the antibiotics to homeowners. But, antibiotic injections are not a onetime cure-all. They must be injected into healthy palms every three months to four months, which may be a significant investment of time and money, over several years, for some homeowners. If the disease is confirmed, removal is recommended. You don’t want the disease

to spread to other palms in your landscape or neighborhood. For additional information, email pinsonn@hcflgov.net, or call (813) 744-5519, ext. 54145. Nicole Pinson is the Urban Horticulture Agent in Hillsborough County.

Customers Become Friends at Prime Time Home Team By Deborah Bostock-Kelley Special to The Laker / Lutz News

It’s not just about finding that dream home, or quickly selling a client’s property, for the Prime Time Home Team. According to partners Ernest Van Glahn and Debi Bolusi, their business is also about building long lasting relationships that often evolve into friendships. With over 22 years of combined industry experience, the two Realtors train under the Craig Proctor Coaching Program, where Ernest is also a certified coach. This past November, the pair was honored with the program’s Quantum Leap Award for exceptional gains in real estate. “We have some really innovative consumer programs” said Debi. “For instance, if buyers don’t Love Their Home Within 18 Months After Purchase, We Will Buy it Back or Sell It For Free, and for sellers, We Will Guarantee The Sale of Their Home or We’ll Buy It (conditions apply).” “We also provide our buyers with a free 13-month home warranty,” said Ernest. “We recently had a client who was so grateful for this warranty because his hot water heater stopped working three days after he purchased the home, and the home covered the replacement of the hot water heater, saving him hundreds of dollars.”

The Prime Time Home Team specializes in first time homebuyers and also works with current homeowners who are downsizing or need more space for their growing family. Seniors often call looking for a maintenance free villa, and they regularly work with retirees and others moving to Florida. The Prime Time Home Team also offers programs for military (retired and active), as well as first responders. They work with several lenders and loan options, and can assist with down payment assistance programs. A retired New York City Police Captain, Ernest was a first responder on 9/11 and believes in the importance of assisting his brothers and sisters in arms. Today, Prime Time Home Team donates to the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation, named after a New York City firefighter who lost his life on 9/11. This foundation pays off the mortgage of first responders and members of the military when they are killed in the line of duty. “Both of us being from New York and having lived through the tragedy of 9/11, this foundation is very close to our hearts” said Debi and Ernest. “Our goal for 2020 is to donate $10,000 to the Stephen Siller Foundation by donating a portion of our commission on every closing.”

LAWSUIT, from page 1A toward the wetlands. Environmentalists, such as the Sierra Club, argue that going through that tract will be detrimental to the wetlands and the wildlife that live in the preserve. However, county officials assure that cautionary measures will be taken to minimize impacts. The new roadway would be incorporated with 16 bridges that overpass wetlands. Guardrails also would be installed to keep wildlife from entering onto the roadway. This would lessen impacts to the Serenova Tract by 83%, said Sam Beneck, Pasco County project manager. “We did understand that this was a project that was very significant to [the] Sierra Club,” he noted. In regards to the lawsuit, filed on Feb. 6, the county anticipated that the “challenge was likely, and so did the Army Corps,” Beneck said. Tim Martin is a member of the Sierra Club, and issued the press release announcing the legal action against the federal agency. “We feel that the Army Corps has made some serious mistakes and violations of federal regulations in granting this permit. I think we have a very strong case proving that,” Martin said. The 59-page lawsuit contends that the Army Corps breached the National Environmental Policy Act – neglecting “to adequately evaluate the direct, indirect, and cumulative harm to threatened and endangered species, their habitats, and wetlands located within RRE (Ridge Road extension) permit area of impact.” Martin said this speaks directly to the removal of gopher tortoises from the Serenova Tract, and its resulting implications. The county has been working in conjunction with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, to find another suitable habitat for the tortoises so they are not harmed during the extension project. However, the Sierra Club has pushed back, stating that removal of the tortoises will only cause greater harm. “When you remove the gopher tortoise

burrows, you’re not just picking up tortoises and moving them to another park in South Florida,” Martin said.“You’re actually destroying this highly evolved, very critical habitat that 350-plus species depend on for survival.” The extension project also has received the backing of U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis who has been a staunch advocate for the roadway. He implored the Army Corps to issue a permit. And, in 2017, Bilirakis sent a letter to President Donald Trump, asking him to make the extension’s completion a priority. Earlier this year, Bilirakis joined Pasco County officials during the project’s ribbon cutting ceremony. There he explained the corridor’s importance to residents when faced with a natural disaster. But, Martin contends that Ridge Road would not be a viable alternative for an evacuation route. During Hurricane Irma, U.S. 19, which runs north and south from Pasco County into neighboring counties, did not have overcapacity and would have been a more suitable route, Martin said. The documentation also claims that the Army Corps violated another law that requires that a least-damaging alternative be taken to sustain water-related ecosystems. There were other locations for the corridor that would have caused less damage, Martin said. Elise Mysels belongs to the Pasco Activists group, which has worked alongside the Sierra Club in resisting the extension. She said that she is not against the county building a third corridor, but it shouldn’t be Ridge Road because of the wetlands it will cross. “What they are basically proposing is to go in and fill 40 acres to allow for this highway to go in,” Mysels said. She attended the gopher tortoise vigil held at the current dead-end of Ridge Road, where it intersects with DeCubellis Road and Moon Lake Road, in New Port Richey. Environmentalists rallied at the intersection on Feb. 9, holding protest signs and encouraging passersby to get involved in the cause. Legal action followed a two-decade wait for the permit to be issued.

EDWARD, from page 1A “I’ve had the opportunity to do some absolutely incredible screenings,” Caperton said, noting he’s had events for “The Shining,”“Halloween,”“Beetlejuice” and others. To hold a screening, Caperton must secure rights to screen the film, make arrangements with the property owners and organize the event. Most of the movies he’s screened are from the horror genre, and they attract fans from all over, he said. “I’m used to getting a lot of out-of-towners and not so many locals. “I do about one a month, and I do them in different states.” “I did “Twilight” in Oregon, and I had people that came from five different countries,” he said. “The Shining — that one made national news,” he added. Some screenings take on a life of their own, he said. For instance, at the screening of the remake of “The Blob,” in Abbeville, Louisiana, people approached him and said,“Oh, I have pieces of the Blob.” “When that movie came in there and they filmed, it was very big deal for that town, and it did a lot for that town,” Caperton explained. “People brought out pieces of the actual Blob. They gave me pieces,” he said. The movie, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” had some incredible scenes shot at a department store, he said. A guy at the department store went up in the attic and unearthed some big signs that had been used in the movie. The signs hadn’t seen the light of day for 20 years but the guy put them back on the building, so the fans could enjoy them, Caperton said. “Really cool stuff like that, happens,” said Caperton, who’s such a die-hard horror film lover that he lives in a house he had built that’s a life-size replica of Michael Myers’ house from “Halloween.” Caperton, who lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina, is excited about the upcoming screening of “Edward Scissorhands.” He loves the Tim Burton film that stars

“Edward Scissorhands” screening event at filming location in Lutz

WHEN: April 25 WHAT: Event includes neighborhood walking tour, interior tour of home, backyard barbecue, haircuts in the backyard and outdoor movie screening. COST: Tickets are $60 (only 50 will be sold); additional charges for food and drink from barbecue and haircuts. To order tickets and for more specifics, visit www.myershousenc.com

Johnny Depp, Dianne Wiest and Winona Ryder. Caperton has long wanted to visit the house where scenes were filmed in Lutz, but just never made it into the area. Now, that he’s secured permission to have a screening at the house, he plans to make the most of it. This will be the first time that fans are officially sanctioned to visit the house, take an interior tour of the home and hang out in the backyard for a barbecue. Other highlights will include a limited number of haircuts being done by a stylist in the backyard, and a walking tour of the neighborhood, where Caperton will describe scenes shot in those locations for the movie. Caperton surmises the neighborhood must have been fairly new when the movie was filmed because that would explain how Burton “was able to get ahold of all of these houses and paint them.” Tickets for the “Edward Scissorhands” event are $60, which includes neighborhood and home tours, as well as the screening. There will be an additional charge for food and beverages from the barbecue. Only 50 tickets will be sold, because of the size of the backyard. He’s not expecting to rake in substantial revenue from the event. “At the end of the day, I’ll probably just break even,” Caperton said. That doesn’t bother him. “It’s going to be really fun,” he said.“I love movies. I kind of create events that I would want to go to.”

From left: Jon Akvan, project manager, JLL; Troy Powell, project manager; Creative Contractors Inc.; Dr. Melanie Storms, Saint Leo University senior vice president; Jose Caban, Saint Leo associate vice president of facilities management; Dr. Jeffrey D. Senese, Saint Leo president; Celine-Deon Palmer, student government union president; D. Dewey Mitchell, Saint Leo Board of Trustees chair; Alan Bomstein, CEO, Creative Contractors; and Joshua Bomstein, Creative Contractors president, at the ceremonial groundbreaking of Saint Leo University’s new Wellness Center.

WELLNESS, from page 1A indoor walking track, a healthy café and smoothie bar, a resort-style outdoor pool with a lakeside infinity edge and outdoor barbecue, as well as a relaxation terrace and garden. There also will be several multipurpose rooms, which could be used as space for meditation, specialty classes, gaming and so on. Many of those amenities, such as a dedicated cycling and yoga studio, aren’t presently offered on campus. Also,“There will be new machines, new equipment on the fitness floor that we don’t currently have,” said Dr. Melanie Storms, senior vice president at the university, who is spearheading the wellness center project. The university’s current recreation and fitness offerings are mainly housed at Marion Bowman Activities & Aquatics Center. But, once the new wellness center opens, the Bowman Center will become an exclusive training ground for Saint Leo’s various athletic programs, Storms said. The Bowman Center has been somewhat limited for recreation and intramural activities because the space also is shared by the university’s intercollegiate athletic programs, such as the Saint Leo men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. Because of that, Storms said the regular student body has been pining for a “fully dedicated rec gym” the wellness center will offer. “We definitely have had high student demand — voices from the students saying they needed additional space, that the (recreation) hours and offerings just haven’t been sufficient to meet the needs,” Storms said. The wellness center primarily will be for Saint Leo students, faculty and staff, but some features may be open to be public. Storms said summer pool memberships will “definitely” be offered to the local community, while public-use options for the fitness center and health services are still being explored by university officials; the university is in talks with several health care providers that potentially could serve the community by delivering medical services on-site.

Storms said student health and counseling services currently offered at DeChantal Hall will move to the new facility once it opens, making it the “single source of health services” at Saint Leo. She added the DeChantal Hall building will stay in use for other purposes for the time being, as it also houses other university departments, such as theology faculty. The wellness center project has been under discussion for a number of years, but officials say now was the time to proceed — as the school in the fall welcomed its largest incoming group of students in the university’s 130-year history (1,001 new students). The school now has about 2,100 students on campus, plus more than 700 faculty and staff. Said Storms,“With the increase that we saw in our student population this past fall, and the anticipated coming in next fall, we just realized it was time; our recreational facilities are overloaded.” Creative Contractors of Clearwater is serving as the construction firm for the project, while S3 Design Inc., of Braintree, Massachusetts, is handling the architectural design; and JLL of Tampa will provide project management services. The university has secured financing to proceed on the multi-million project, but also is working to secure private fundraising and state funding, Storms said. The wellness center is going on land that originally belonged to the Benedictine Sisters of Florida. With that, Storms believes the facility “fits within the historical context of who they are and how they used the space.” She observed,“The site is very special in the sense of being dedicated to the mind, body, spirit, and the sort of holistic well-being of the individual, and sort of carrying forward their legacy in that way. It’s beautiful because it’s lakeside, it’s very serene, and I couldn’t think of a better way to use the land than this.” At the groundbreaking, Saint Leo president Dr. Jeffrey Senese predicted the new wellness center will have a significant impact:“We are creating an iconic building for Pasco County,Tampa Bay and Florida. It is our vision that this building will take your breath away.”

Over 50 local athletes sign with colleges By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

M

ore than 50 local high school athletes signed their letters of intent (LOI) earlier this month to various colleges and universities as part of National Signing Day, held annually on the first Wednesday in February. From The Laker/Lutz News coverage area, Steinbrenner High and Wiregrass Ranch High each had the most signings with 10 apiece, followed by Sunlake High (seven) and Wesley Chapel High (six). Bishop McLaughlin, Carrollwood Day School, Cypress Creek, Freedom, Land O’ Lakes, and Zephyrhills Christian Academy also were well-represented as part of the signing day festivities. Locals signed to play at the next level for the following sports — acrobatics & tumbling, baseball, cheerleading, cross-country, fencing, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball and track. Here is a closer look at some of the notable signees and their high schools: Jordan Almasy, Wesley Chapel, softball (University of Central Florida) — The 5-foot-7 right-hander has etched her name in Wesley Chapel softball history — eclipsing school records for strikeouts in a game, strikeouts in a season, pitching wins, and innings pitched her junior year.Through three varsity seasons, she has compiled 31 wins, a 1.99 earned run average, 365 strikeouts and a .203 opponent batting average in 306.1 innings pitched. Also, Almasy was a freshman ace in the Wildcats softball program’s first ever winning season, in 2017. Tony Bartalo, Gaither, football (Bethune-Cookman University) — The 6-foot-2, 210-pound signal-caller put together a senior campaign to remember, ranking second in the state in passing yards (3,194 yards) and guiding the Cowboys to a 12-2 mark and the Class 6A state semifinals. Bartalo’s other passing figures were likewise impressive — 62.6% completion rate and 50 total touchdowns with just 14 interceptions. Bartalo’s teammate, linebacker Chance Coleman, also signed to play Division I football, at Florida International University. Ethan Jones, Wesley Chapel, baseball — The 6-foot-5 lefthander posted a 1.64 earned run average and 73 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched last season, guiding the Wildcats to an appearance in the Class 6A regional tournament. Jones, ranked one of the state’s top 200 baseball prospects by Perfect Game, also broke out on the travel ball circuit — part of the 2019 Perfect Game Super 25 national championship team and named to the WWBA (World Wood Bat Association) World Championship All-Tournament Team. Malik Jones, Zephyrhills Christian, football (Florida Atlantic University) —

Orange Blossom Garden Club has deep roots By Karen Haymon Long Special to The Laker/Lutz News

E

ver wonder how to attract butterflies to your garden, or unravel the mysteries of growing herbs? Can you tell the difference between a cattleya, oncidium or phalaenopsis? Hang out with members of the Orange Blossom Garden Club of Lutz for a day, and you’ll learn all those things and more. The club, whose history dates back to 1941, has 24 members who collectively know all sorts of interesting things about flowers and plants, gardens and pests, rooting, trimming, grafting and growing. They learned recently at one of their monthly meetings about a smartphone app that helps identify plants. But, then, they already have Harriet Vaughan or Sara Rametta for that. “Someone in our group always knows what a plant is,” says Lee Ann Brown, club president, while driving members to Everlast Orchids & Supplies in Spring Hill for a club field trip. Along the way, she explains how much members learn from each other and from speakers at their monthly meetings. At State Road 52 and U.S. 41, she abruptly interrupts herself: “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe they’re taking down all those trees,” she says, wearily. That’s a theme repeated by others on the outing. Some members - most past 60 - grew up in Florida and remember when the state was much less developed. Some even fought the widening of U.S. 41, the very road they were traveling on, on the way to Spring Hill. Club members are drawn to a variety of plants and flowers. Brown — who taught theater to high school students, some of whom made it to Broadway — rescues all sorts of plants from estate sales for a couple of dollars each and coaxes them back to beauty. “Usually, they just need a little attention,” she says. Former city planner Barbara Leiby says she learned about begonias at a club meeting and now grows her own. Another member, Eva Balogh, says, “I can’t limit myself, so I grow everything.” Her friend, Darwin Brew, takes the opposite approach. He has 600 orchids and couldn’t resist buying more at Everlast. He meticulously labels them and spends days bringing them in from the cold. But, he doesn’t seem to mind. “It’s fun,’’ he says. His first orchid was a pink phalaenopsis. “It was 10 bucks, so I bought it, brought it home and put it on a table, and it bloomed and bloomed and bloomed.” He was captivated. At Everlast, he helped Eva Balogh decide between a delicate white cattleya hybrid or a yellow one, both with a splash of purplepink. “This one has more buds,’’ he tells her, as she spots yet a third choice. “And, look at that one,” she says, pointing to another prize winner. There are just so many to choose from. Hong-Chia Lee and his wife, Andrea Macias, who own Everlast, have 200,000 orchids in greenhouses spanning an acre off U.S. 41 in Spring Hill. They sell to the public, as well as to florists, garden shops, and to brokers who sell to Lowe’s and other chain stores. Lee offers growing tips, as he leads 16 garden club members on a tour of his greenhouses. “Most people do too much to orchids,” he tells the members. “Just like your husbands, just leave them alone. We like to be left alone,’’ he said, laughing. “They’d rather be dry than wet. Water them every 8 to 10 days. Not every day.” Since most of his orchids come from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Thailand and other warm places, they like the heat. One of the best places for them in the winter, he says, is a warm and humid bathroom. He spends $30,000 on propane to keep

Eva Balogh and Darwin Brew ponder between two orchids, before Balogh spots yet a third contender.

Hong-Chia Lee has 200,000 orchids in his greenhouses off U.S. 41 in Spring Hill. He sells to the public and to florists, garden shops and plant brokers.

Lee Ann Brown, president of The Orange Blossom Garden Club of Lutz, tries to decide which orchid to buy at Everlast Orchids & Supplies.

GARDEN CLUB The Orange Blossom Garden Club of Lutz meets at 10 a.m., on the first Wednesday of the month, from September through June, in the Lutz Civic Center, 98 First Ave., N.W., in Lutz. (December’s meeting is a holiday luncheon and June’s is a scholarship luncheon). For more details, call (813) 949-1301.

ORCHID SHOP Everlast Orchids & Supplies is at 17019 U.S. 41, Spring Hill. Open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call (727) 235-1386, or visit www.EverlastOrchids.com.

his stock warm every winter, but then, he orders 9,000 plants and 1,200 bags of moss at a time, and 18-wheeler trucks deliver his fertilizer. Asked how many orchids he has at home, he smiles and says,“Zero.’’ Of course, he doesn’t have to go far to see them. He and his wife, and his 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter, live in a house on their 9-acre nursery property, so,“If I want to see an orchid, I just come here,” he says.

Some garden club members have been to his nursery before and he donates orchids to their annual plant sale, whose proceeds fund a yearly $500 scholarship to a high school senior planning to concentrate on agriculture of some sort. This year’s sale is March 7 from 9 a.m. to noon, at County Line Produce, at County Line Road and U.S. 41 in Lutz. Club members also collect canned goods for a food bank and donate throws, socks and other items to a nursing home. At lunch after their nursery tour, they talk about herbs and coffee plants (they both like shade); bromeliads (The University of South Florida’s Botanical Gardens has pretty ones); bleeding hearts (they’re wonderful, but have to be thinned sometimes); camellias (lovelier than roses); orchids (addictive); deer (bad) and snakes (good). Their conversations have that good friends’ easy feeling, with no mention of politics, religion, sports or the state of our union. But, then, that’s what garden clubs are for — friendship, learning and swapping stories about flowers, gardens and other Andrea Macias is Hong-Chia Lee’s wife. natural wonders.

Piper is a golden girl

Clara Urena submitted this photo of a male Muscovy duck at Bexley, in Land O’ Lakes. This strange, warty-faced duck causes confusion for some bird watchers, as it's very distinctive and quite commonly seen, yet does not appear in some field guides. Wild Muscovy ducks are glossy black with bold white wing patches and are forest dwellers that nest in tree cavities.

Piper is 7 years old and last year moved to Lutz from North Carolina. She enjoys swimming, napping, and going where her family goes. The Farrell family — J.J., Rachel, Graysen, Ellie, and quadruplets Ava, Kate, Will and Jack — all love Piper.

Parker is a ball of energy Parker is electrifying! He is an awesome pup that needs a family that is just as active as he is. Parker loves to play fetch with the balls in the play yard, along with running around and just being silly. Parker is dog-selective. He is very social, however, he does play rough and rowdy when he is with other dogs. He prefers dogs that have that same play style. Parker does well with children, and he is very protective of children. He is a loyal and loving pup that loves belly rubs. Parker has been at the shelter since last July.

If you would like to adopt Hector or Parker, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The adoption center is open Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6:30 p.m. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines. For more information, email adoptionpartners@pascocountyfl.net. PET PAWS NEW VACCINE FOR DOGS AVAILABLE Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) is now offering leptospirosis vaccinations for dogs at its weekly, low-cost vaccine clinics, as well as to all shelter dogs upon intake. Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that causes severe illness in dogs, as well as other animals and humans. When left untreated, it can cause serious and life-threatening damage to the kidneys, liver, brain, lungs and heart. Pets most at risk for infection are those that frequent parks and trails, have access to open/standing water, and encounter wildlife. The vaccine is being offered on its own, or as part of a combination vaccine. If the pet has never received the vaccine before, a booster vaccine is required after three weeks. The leptospirosis vaccine will be added to the popular Clinic Combo, which includes distemper, leptospirosis and Bordetella vaccines, as well as a heartworm test. The PCAS low-cost vaccine clinics are available on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 11

a.m., with no appointment required. For more information, please visit bit.ly/PCASvaccines.
