STUDENTS PROVE THEIR SKILLS WITH MICROSOFT EXAMS This past fall, the Lake Land College Business Division became a certified testing center for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams. The MOS certification exam tests students’ skills in Microsoft Office 2013 programs—Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, SharePoint, Office365. In just the first semester, 79 Lake Land College students have earned MOS certifications. Microsoft Office Specialist certification provides students with an advantage in their educational and workforce pursuits by providing a competitive credential.

OFFICE PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS MEET WORKFORCE DEMANDS

6 LAKE LAND COLLEGE w LAKELANDCOLLEGE.EDU

We recently discussed changes in the office professionals curriculum with Lake Land College Instructors Lisa Earp and Kathleen Daugherty.

Q. You recently renamed several of your

academic majors that lead to careers as office professionals. What prompted you to make these changes?

A. The new names better reflect the content of these majors and the future careers our students are seeking.

Q. Where do your graduates find jobs? A. Our graduates are prepared to work

in any office that needs professional office support to manage office daily activities whether large or small. The advantage of Lake Land College’s majors is that students can choose to specialize in specific career fields. Our graduates are employed throughout our region in health care facilities such as hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, veterinarians, chiropractors, dentists and optometrists. In addition, many of our graduates find jobs in insurance, legal, agricultural, manufacturing, education, financial, and real estate offices.

Q. What characteristics does a person need to be successful in one of these programs?

A. Students who have good verbal

and written communication skills, time management and customer service skills, as well as those who are good with computers and software are ideal candidates for these majors. Students who are able to multitask, are self-motivated, organized and good problem solvers excel in these careers. Students who have a strong work ethic, professionalism, business etiquette and the ability to plan special events/meetings/travel are also successful.

Q. What internships are available to office professional students?

A. Students who earn a degree also

complete an internship (or take a certification prep class for the medical coding majors) where they work in an office. This provides students with a realistic learning experience that prepares them for employment. This is especially helpful for students who are looking for a career change and have no previous office experiences. Many local businesses contact us asking for recommendations.

BRIDGING A GAP

FOUNDATION REACHES OUT TO HELP THE GED PROGRAM

8 LAKE LAND COLLEGE w LAKELANDCOLLEGE.EDU

Last fall, when Lake Land College was facing a difficult decision to temporarily close its Adult Education programs due to the lack of a state budget, the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors asked how it could help. “We know how important the GED and English as a Second Language classes are to our communities. We didn’t want those students to have to put their hard work on hold,” Bob Pancoast, immediate past president of the foundation and chair of the finance and investment committee, said. “I am pleased that we could offer the assistance the college would have needed until the state approved funding.” While the college did end up receiving limited federal funds to hold classes in the spring, the college was extremely grateful for the foundation’s pledge of support.

There are about 180 students enrolled in Lake Land College’s Adult Education programs.

MEET THE FACULTY

WINNING GRADES 10 LAKE LAND COLLEGE w LAKELANDCOLLEGE.EDU

Lake Land College athletes are excelling in the classroom as well as in competition. Overall, the teams had a combined GPA of 3.12 for the fall semester with 10 student athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. “Our athletic program develops young men and women to reach their potential both in play and in the classroom. Our focus on academics is reflected in the achievements of our current athletes and we are very proud of them,” Lake Land College Athletic Director Bill Jackson said. The softball team had the highest GPA of 3.35, followed by baseball with 3.19, women’s basketball at 3.16, volleyball at 3.1 and men’s basketball at 2.81. Individually, 58 out of 86 student athletes earned GPAs of 3.0 or better. Each program requires athletes to attend study tables and workout schedules throughout the entire year. “During the school year there are many demands on our student athletes. They have to be very focused and organized to be successful as a student athlete,” Jackson said.

Sophomore Hayden Cole, who is one of the baseball players who earned a 4.0 this past fall said being a student athlete requires a person to work ahead and take advantage of windows of time to study or complete assignments, as their commitments usually go until 9 p.m. most nights. “Athletes are known to work hard to have success but we have to be just as disciplined and hard working when it comes to homework and classes,” Cole, a Windsor High School graduate who is majoring in ag transfer, said. “Studying a little every day will dramatically increase your knowledge of any course you are in and I think that has been the most influencing part of my success. Being a student athlete is very rewarding but remembering that student comes before athlete is very important.”

DURING THE PAST NINE YEARS, LAKE LAND COLLEGE HAS HAD: •

21 Academic All-American Teams

46 individual Academic All-Americans

26 teams with GPAs above 3.0

Five teams compete at nationals

DIG IN WITH HORTICULTURE

HORTICULTURE MAJORS

Lake Land College offers both a certificate and a degree in Horticulture. All of the horticulture courses include a laboratory component in addition to the classroom. Students maintain and work in 2000-squarefeet of greenhouses on campus. Projects include seed production, cutting propagation, tree grafting, walkway, retaining wall and other landscaping construction, tree pruning techniques, worm compost production, and many others. In addition, students get hands-on experience in paid internships. POSITIVE JOB GROWTH Illinois ranks in the top 10 states for jobs/sales in Landscape and Horticulture production. Many opportunities to own your own business have enabled several past graduates to start their own companies after graduation. The green industry labor force is expected to grow by 13 percent in the next 10 years. Source: bls.gov

The beautiful and historic Missouri Botanical Garden spans 79 acres in the heart of St. Louis. In the midst of the garden is the Kemper Center for Home Gardening whose educational center and eight acres of residential gardens inspire hundreds of enthusiasts every day. All this allows visitors to enjoy the work of a team of horticulturists that includes Lake Land College alumna Linda Stalling. “I am responsible for various garden areas with the Outdoor Kemper Horticulture Team. It is a very fun, interesting and physical, but exciting job,” Stalling explained one afternoon. Stalling’s position is a 40-hour per week, yearlong adventure. On a typical day, she reports in, checks her areas, helps with any special projects and continues with individual job requirements for her area such as planting, maintaining, doing new designs, picking up leaves, removing snow in the winter, making baskets and containers, watering all those in the hot summer, chipping woody material and working the special shows. “In the summer we continue to maintain the beauty of the Garden in all ways and share watering duties within the horticulture department. In the cold winter hours we finish designs, help with the Christmas and Orchid shows being set up and we also report in for snow removal. It is always fun and interesting to work with great people – both employees and the wonderful Garden visitors.” Stalling said she uses the knowledge she learned in her horticulture program at Lake Land College on a daily basis and is certain it is one of the reasons she was hired full time after serving as a volunteer at the Garden. “The volunteer program the Garden has is

great. You learn so much working with the Garden employees. By doing the jobs they ask you to do, you put in place all the things you learn from the classes at Lake Land and with that thought - the volunteering and the degree both helped me get the job and also enjoy the work I do,” Stalling said. “Lake Land College gave me the credentials to get the job.”

MEET THE FACULTY

Stalling graduated from Lake Land College at the age of 54. Following her lifelong interest in horticulture was a natural fit as her husband had also returned to college later in life to pursue a nursing degree from Lake Land College and then bachelor’s and master’s degrees. “As a non-traditional student it was a very good experience. The faculty and fellow students were all great to work with,” she said. Following graduation, she and her husband moved to St. Louis in 2007 after living in Watson for 28 years. Stalling said no matter your age, if you are interested in horticulture – dig in. “If you love working with horticulture – pursue your interest; stay involved with gardening groups, classes and seminars; keep reading and learning and find a related job. After working for a time and having experience – you will find you can supplement your income by doing side jobs for people who realize you have the love of doing horticulture work.”

DYKE BARKLEY Horticulture Instructor Barkley has been teaching at Lake Land College for 16 years. The owner of Barkley Farms Nurseries in Paris, Ill., he started as an adjunct instructor and then developed the horticulture/ landscaping program. He teaches horticulture and agro-ecology classes at Lake Land as well as Master Gardner courses in Indiana and Illinois. “My favorite pastime is to get people enthused about planting plants. As a self-proclaimed ‘plant geek’ my students would agree that I love to talk about plants.”

THE LAKE LAND COLLEGE PROMISE

COMMITTED TO STUDENT SUCCESS 14 LAKE LAND COLLEGE w LAKELANDCOLLEGE.EDU

During these uncertain times in higher education, Lake Land College is making a bold commitment to its students. “We want our students to know their goals are very important to us. With the Lake Land College Promise, they can register for summer classes with the confidence that their schedule will go as planned,” Lake Land College President Josh Bullock said. “As long as the class has eight students enrolled, we will be teaching the class as scheduled. If there are fewer than eight students, we will do everything we can to work with the students to help them complete the class either on an individual basis or to find a suitable replacement.” The Lake Land College Promise allows students to confidently plan their work and family obligations around their college schedule.

“Lake Land College faculty want students to know we are here for them. The Lake Land Promise demonstrates our commitment to helping students complete the classes they need to successfully reach their educational goals at the pace they have mapped out with their faculty advisor,” Heather Nohren, academic counselor and president of the Lake Land College Faculty Association, said. Lake Land College Student Trustee Adam Doty said, "This pledge will improve all students' experiences by taking the worry out of the scheduling process. Lake Land students lead busy lives, so knowing the schedule we plan will remain intact is invaluable."

“Right now, as part of our Promise, I am teaching a smaller class because a few students need to complete the class before starting their internship. It is a very important class for them to stay on track and I am glad to help them out,” Human Services Instructor Helen Hendren said. Accounting Instructor Cindy Phipps, who recently helped a student who was working full time and struggling to align her schedule, agreed with Hendren. “Students have work and family obligations, and they want to complete their degree in a reasonable amount of time. The Promise is one way we can help students graduate in the timeframe they intended.”

Lake Land College faculty often help students make special arrangements to help them progress toward graduation.

Nohren has worked at Lake Land College for 14 years. She coordinates New Student Orientation and helps students in Business and Agriculture, as well as those who are interested in transferring to Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Illinois State University.

Hendren started working at Lake Land College in 2001 as the internship supervisor for the Human Services program. She moved into her current position in 2007.

Phipps began teaching at Lake Land College in 1995 following a career as a certified public accountant in Indianapolis.

“I emphasize the experiences students have in their required internships. I help them see the value of that real-world experience as they get ready to enter the workforce. I also appreciate the opportunity to teach these students who will be going out into our communities and providing professional services to people in need. I enjoy getting to know my students. I tell them all the time, ‘I learn from you.’”

“Joining Lake Land College 20 years ago after working as a CPA allows me to share real-world situations with our students and helps prepare them for their careers. I enjoy working closely with students to help them learn the principles of accounting and see how accounting fits into a larger picture in the workplace. Our graduates are in high demand in our area.”

“As an academic counselor, I help people get started at Lake Land College every day. I enjoy working closely with them to help them make decisions about their career choice and the appropriate major they should pursue to reach their career goal. Assisting students with educational planning and seeing them at graduation reaching their goals is a rewarding experience for students, their families and all of us at Lake Land College.”

DESTINED FOR SUCCESS

TRiO DESTINATION COLLEGE HELPS STUDENTS REACH THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOALS

20 LAKE LAND COLLEGE w LAKELANDCOLLEGE.EDU

Helping students realize it is possible to go to college is the greatest strength and pride of the Lake Land College TRiO Destination College team. “When we meet our students for the first time they often look puzzled when we tell them we want to help them enroll in college,” TRiO DC Director Lori Ohnesorge said. “When we say good-bye to them as seniors, they are confident successful students excited to enter their freshmen year as college students.” The TRiO DC program is a federally-funded program design to provide guidance, tools and mentoring to low-income, first-generation students. Lake Land College’s program serves more than 600 students in 12 schools ranging from grades six through 12. TRiO DC advisors create individualized plans for each student and reach out to include parents in planning, activities and paying for college. They also have a lot of fun along the way, meeting monthly at the school with participants and hosting events outside the school day. “We plan several activities a year to help students have cultural experiences, learn about careers and colleges and succeed in school and life,” Ohnesorge added.

Activities include career day, national college fairs, college visits, special events, summer camps, awards banquet and workshops. TRiO DC advisors also assist students in completing college applications, identifying scholarships and filling out applications, preparing for the ACT and filling out financial aid documents. Each year students and parents are invited to a banquet where participants are recognized for their achievements. Having been in existence for 10 years, TRiO DC alumnus are sharing their achievements as well. “If it wasn’t for the support of the members and staff of TRiO, I wouldn’t have had the courage and mindset to reach for my goals. I am now a licensed chiropractor and I am relieving people from pain and giving them their lives back,” Mandy Jones, former Ramsey High School participant, said.
