President’s Message Spring 2015

W

ith a new year just around the corner, now is a fine time to set goals for 2015! Maybe you’d like to advance your career by gaining a new skillset. Or perhaps, you’d like to finish the degree you started years ago. Maybe you’re a high school senior looking for the best college to fit your aspirations and needs. Whatever your college or career goals might be, Lake Land offers something for everyone. In fact, more than 20,000 students choose Lake Land College each year to help them advance in their lives, careers or educational goals. We are proud to be a nationally recognized institution offering more than 140 associate degrees and certificates that get you ready to transfer or enter the workforce.

Full Circle is published each

semester for the students and residents of Lake Land College District #517 by Communications and Creative Services at Lake Land College, 5001 Lake Land Blvd., Mattoon, IL 61938. This magazine will introduce you to Lake Land College and provide you with resources to get started or continue your education with us. For inquiries, please contact Communications and Creative Services at 217-234-5408.

On the cover is Brandi Hall, Clay City, who is pursuing an associate degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. She is pictured in her AC Circuits I class, checking the voltage of a circuit board using a oscilloscope.

Did you know that Lake Land was ranked 41st in the nation and 5th in Illinois for producing one-year certificate graduates? Furthermore, the college ranked 12th in the nation and second in Illinois for associate degree production in agriculture, agricultural operations and related sciences. We are 38th in the nation and 16th in Illinois for production of associate degrees in multi/interdisciplinary studies and 28th in the nation and second in Illinois for production of sales, merchandising and related marketing operations associate degrees.

There is so much to explore here at Lake Land and we know that focusing on a career path or narrowing down a class choice can sometimes be challenging. That’s why I encourage you to take the Career Cluster Quiz on page 6-7, to begin identifying a career area based on your interests and personality. You can then determine which programs are available to study at Lake Land College in that area. Or, see page 12-13 to better understand why students like you choose Lake Land College. Our affordable, quality education stands out above the rest and students from east central Illinois and beyond come to Lake Land to experience the personal, one-on-one instruction, handson, quality training and once-in-a-lifetime experience that Lake Land College offers students of any age. We invite you to visit us online or in person on campus to see how many opportunities there are to help you engage your mind and change your life through the power of learning. We’d like to get to know you and hope you’ll consider becoming part of the Lake Land College family.

Alumnus starts his successful career at Lake Land

- returns to inspire others as an instructor

hen you walk into Mel Cloe’s classroom at the Western Region Center in Pana, it’s not easy to identify who the instructor is.

“I have my students sit in a circle, so we can look at each other and discuss the information,” explained Cloe. “I sit alongside them in that circle because I learn from my students just as much as they learn from me. I really value the experiences each person brings with them and often times, it’s those personal experiences that we learn from the most.” Cloe has a long history with Lake Land College. After losing his job of 20 years as a brick layer, he turned to Lake Land College to earn an associate degree in 1985. “I didn’t necessarily want to return to laying brick, but I knew I needed a degree to find a good job,” he said. “So I went back to school, and I can honestly say if it wasn’t for Lake Land College giving me a good start, I would have quit because I hadn’t been in school for so long and I was scared to death.” Cloe completed an associate degree from Lake Land and transferred to Sangamon State University to complete a bachelor’s degree, where he also completed a master’s degree after that institution changed to the University of Illinois – Springfield. He said that while his educational journey took him 10 years to complete, and that it wasn’t easy to also work full-time and raise a family, it was the best thing he’s ever done.

FULL circle • Spring 2015

“After I lost my job, I was hired at Kemmerer Village in Assumption as a case aid. Once I completed my associate degree, I got a promotion; once I completed my bachelor’s, I was hired as a therapist; when I received my master’s I was hired as the director of the organization,” said Cloe. “My educational attainment directly affected my career

growth and allowed me to climb the ladder at Kemmerer.” For Cloe, taking classes for an associate degree in his hometown allowed him to spend more time with his family and save money because he didn’t have to commute to Mattoon. “I am so proud I was able to complete my associate degree right here in Pana. In fact, I never stepped foot on the main campus,” he said. “The Western Region Center is a great community resource. We are lucky to have access to higher education right here.” Cloe came back to Lake Land as an adjunct instructor in 2000 and teaches Psychology, Human Development, Family Relations and Death and Dying. He said that working in social services inspired him to pursue teaching so that he could help people better understand and relate to one another. “I try to teach people about who they are. It’s important to me that my students leave my classes knowing a little more about themselves because there’s more to education than just books. It’s about personal enrichment and growth,” said Cloe.

Ask Mel, the instructor!

Q: If you knew a potential student who was nervous about returning to college after years of not being in a formal education setting, what advice would you give that person?

5

FULL circle • Spring 2015

A: Don’t let your fear hold you back because you are not alone! So many non-traditional aged students are scared about returning to school. They feel like they can’t do it. But by starting at a community college, you can ease into school. Maybe start by taking a night class or by going part-time. The instructors at institutions like Lake Land will work with you and over time, your confidence will grow and you will learn that you can, in fact, succeed in college. The community college is built for non-traditional students. It offers smaller classes and instructors are more personal than at larger universities. So, by the time you transfer to a four-year school, if that’s the goal, you’ll have the support, knowledge, confidence and ability to do it!

Don’t be!

Lake Land College is here to help! If you’re serious about attending college but need financial assistance, there are many opportunities to financially support you as you pursue your academic goals. To start this process, ALL students requesting financial aid must complete the 2015 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible.

After submitting your FAFSA, explore the following options to help you reach your academic and career goals. The following financial aid options do not require payback or reimbursement:

Those who do not qualify for state, federal or local scholarship options can explore: 1. Paying the bill in full by the due date 2. Signing up for the Nelnet tuition payment plan! LLC offers the Nelnet payment plan that allows students to spread their tuition payments out over the semester as opposed to paying their bill in full at one time. Advantages include easy online enrollment, flexible payment options and no interest!

Explore the affordable, quality With so many colleges and universities out there, deciding on the right fit can be a tough choice. That’s why so many students begin their academic career at Lake Land College. According to a recent Noel Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory, the top four reasons students selected to attend Lake Land College are:

1. Cost 2. Financial Aid Opportunities 3. Academic Quality and Reputation 4. Personalized Attention “I looked at a technical school in Indiana and discovered it had very little hands-on training and was about four-times the cost of attending Lake Land. When I visited Lake Land, what drew me was the hands-on practice and experience I would gain in the classroom. I wanted to go to college where I would receive the hands-on training needed for the electronics field with up-to-date technology and resources to transfer to a four-year school.” -Brandi Hall, Clay City Freshman studying Electronic Engineering Technology

Now, let’s break these down to understand why Lake Land College is the top choice for so many. 1. Cost •

Lake Land College is more than just one of the most affordable higher education options for you. It’s the place that you can earn a college degree that will benefit you for the rest of your life. It’s an investment with an enormous return that no one can ever take away from you.

FULL circle • Spring 2015

2. Scholarship Opportunities • The Lake Land College Foundation assists the college in developing and enhancing the educational opportunities and service to its students, alumni and citizens of the district, and a big part of that is providing academic scholarships to Lake Land College students. For the 2013-2014 academic school year alone, the Lake Land College Foundation awarded more than $409,000 through more than 430 scholarships. Scholarship awards range from $100 to $2,000 per year.
