FISCAL YEAR 2015 LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION

ANNUAL REPORT

BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES AND STRONGER COMMUNITIES THROUGH EDUCATION.

Building brighter futures and stronger communities through education.

JOINT LETTER FROM THE LAKE LAND COLLEGE

FOUNDATION PRESIDENT & FOUNDATION CEO

Students, faculty and staff on campus remark that, “It’s a great day to be a Laker!” This annual report demonstrates a few of the reasons why that statement is true. Through your support, our vision of building brighter futures and stronger communities through education is being realized in the lives of students every day. Students are receiving the financial assistance they need to achieve their educational goals. Faculty are receiving the additional support needed in the classroom that keeps our graduates competitive in the workforce. YOU help make every day a great day to be a Laker! This annual report focuses on a few of the people who make a difference in the lives of our students through their generous support. As you read their stories, we think you’ll agree that they have changed lives. They are extraordinary people who chose to support our students and their communities, and in the process, were changed themselves. We were saddened this year to learn of the passing of a person who made a true difference at Lake Land College. Although the term “legacy” is often overused, Dr. Carol Sanders left behind a very real legacy, which has had a great impact upon the Lake Land College Foundation. Dr. Sanders, who served as vice president for the Lake Land College Foundation, was responsible for the activities of the foundation from 1988-1998. Under her leadership, the Lake Land College Foundation grew and fundraising efforts matured, which made a difference for future generations. On a personal level, every one of us who knew Carol will remember her with great affection—her infectious smile, her stories of travel with her husband, J.W., her love of the outdoors, golf, fine food, and fine wine, and especially her love of Lake Land and the students and communities it serves. When all is said and done, however much you like your work, it’s the people who you meet in it that truly matter. People like Carol Sanders were very special; you don’t come across many of them, and when you do, they leave a lasting impression. This year’s Foundation Golf Classic was dedicated to Carol, and we remember her in this annual report with great fondness.

LETTER FROM THE

LAKE LAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT

Relationships are important at Lake Land College. The strong relationships between our students and faculty create a motivating and encouraging learning environment designed to help students achieve their educational goals. The relationships built between students add to their quality of life, allowing them to engage in social and organizational activities that build character while providing a different perspective of classroom principles. The relationships the college builds in our communities strengthen the overall quality of life of our district, and they engage our future graduates with prospective employers. Relationships strengthen education at all levels and make east central Illinois an attractive place to live, raise families, work and obtain an education. Those relationships also support Lake Land College’s efforts through your gifts to the Lake Land College Foundation. Your gift isn’t just a financial resource. We view it as an investment in our mission, our students and the communities we serve. That investment makes a difference in the lives of so many, but first and foremost, our students. Gifts of scholarships ease the burden of students, who in today’s world, often see financial support for their education shrinking. Gifts of program support make a difference in the lives of faculty members, needing new technologies to fully prepare students for their careers. In this report, the Lake Land College Foundation recognizes your relationship with the college. This year, we renamed and expanded the lifetime giving societies, which recognizes levels of giving aligned more with the college. No matter your level of giving, every gift to the Lake Land College Foundation is important and makes a difference. Together, we are One Laker Nation! Sincerely,

Dr. Josh Bullock President

CORPORATE INVESTMENTS

ENHANCE STUDENTS’ LIVES & COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Corporate giving is common in the world of non-profit organizations and the Lake Land College Foundation is no exception to this. In fact, more than 600 corporations and businesses, spanning the entire state of Illinois and beyond have given to the foundation since its inception in 1970. For many corporate donors, these investments reach beyond tax deductions and offer tremendous and lasting good for the communities they serve. For instance, take Farm Credit Illinois (FCI), which gave its inaugural gift to the foundation in 2013. According to Vice President for Marketplace Engagement Rod Stoll, FCI engaged with the foundation because as a business structured as a cooperative, its top motivation is not to maximize profits. Rather, its overriding business priority is to create value for the 8,500 farm families, rural landowners and agribusinesses who own FCI. “Part of the value proposition of FCI is to invest in the marketplace and communities where our members work, live and learn,” Stoll explained. That’s why FCI made a $100,000 commitment to the Lake Land Foundation in support of the Agriculture Division in 2013. Half of that commitment was designated toward naming the “Farm Credit Illinois Training Center” in the West Building and a portion of that funding was allocated as an endowment, which is being invested for the first five years. Stoll said in 2019, the endowment’s annual income will be available to begin providing annual support of the Agriculture Division into perpetuity. The remaining funding from the initial investment will be paid in five annual installments of $5,000 from 2014 to 2018 to support initiatives such as the Post-Secondary Agriculture Student Organization and annual scholarships awarded by the foundation to students from farm families. “FCI recognizes that the agriculture programs at Lake Land College are a treasured gem for Illinois farm families and the agriculture industry,” Stoll said. “Lake Land plays an essential role in growing and developing the next generation of farm families and future talent for the greater agriculture industry. It makes terrific sense for our cooperative to make an investment and strengthen our relationship with an institution so well aligned with our core mission.” Stoll said that Lake Land College stood out to FCI as an investment opportunity because as the cost of higher education skyrocketed in the past decade, community colleges deliver exceptional value in educating students who either transfer to fouryear institutions, transition directly into the workforce, or join their family’s farming business. Stoll said that FCI is passionate about equipping young people with skills, strategies, attitudes and information needed for them to be successful in their farming and agricultural careers. In fact in May, the company filled a new position, the director of marketplace education and development, with a Lake Land alumnus. Clay Zwilling, Lake Land Class of 2011, just completed a graduate degree from Texas A & M after

finishing a bachelor’s degree at Oklahoma State University. In this new role, Zwilling will explore opportunities for FCI to deliver more educational value to high school and college students, as well as farmers of all ages who are lifelong learners. Similarly, C.H.I. Overhead Doors in Arthur believes that investing in local school systems and area communities through philanthropic work is a key component of fulfilling its mission - “Be the best partner possible for our customer and co-workers.” The company, which established scholarship funding for its incumbent workers, believes that investing in the foundation is a way to attract quality employees, while at the same time promote Lake Land as a top educational option for students. “The most notable direct advantage of engaging with the foundation is that every applicant for our scholarship has an incentive to be a quality employee,” said Katy Hogan, human resources generalist for C.H.I. “A quality employee at C.H.I. shows up to work on time every day and displays attributes we value like efficient leadership, effective teamwork and excellent workmanship.” To learn more about giving to the Lake Land College Foundation and the advantages it will bring your organization, contact Executive Director for College Advancement Jackie Joines at 217-234-5354 or jjoines@lakelandcollege.edu.

LEAVING A LEGACY OF GENEROSITY

TWO SISTERS GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THEY LOVED Tear gas, imprisonment and danger were not enough to deter a young Karen Fuqua from doing what she believed was right. In fact, Fuqua was arrested and sent to jail four times before she ever even graduated from college. However, this is something the late attorney and her surviving sister Marilyn FuquaThompson are not ashamed of. Rather, this is a proud memory, one that quintessentially illustrates Fuqua’s values.

have an education beyond the 7th grade, educational attainment for his children was the impetus for his career of hard labor.” In fact, the Fuqua family was a strong proponent of establishing Lake Land College. In the mid-1960s a steering committee seeking to establish a career and vocational training school passed a tax referendum establishing Lake Land College. The referendum followed a year of intense lobbying on the parts of area educators, local business owners and concerned residents.

“Sis had a passion Karen Fuqua served as a Lake Land College Trustee from 1997-2003. their college and career goals. In fact, Fuqua served as a Lake Land College Trustee from 1997-2003. As a faculty member for the Allied Health Division from 1981-2008 and division chair from 1985-2008, Fuqua-Thompson saw first-hand some of the struggles that students faced while pursuing an education – managing school and family life, financial constraints, and coming back to school as adults. She would often share those stories with her sister, who then decided that together, they would help students in-need. To this end, the sisters funded scholarships through the Lake Land College Foundation in honor of their parents, Robert Fuqua and Mildred Harlen-Fuqua. “We got involved in giving to the foundation because we knew there are people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to have the opportunity to receive a college education,” FuquaThompson said. “We wanted to help and take care of others, just like our parents helped and took care of us, working long, hard hours on the farm to pay for every dime of our educations.”

Helping others was engrained in Fuqua’s professional life, too, as she often represented her clients’ legal affairs at a reduced rate or at no cost, especially later in life. “Karen became a lawyer because she was able to create more change, to affect more lives as an attorney,” said Fuqua-Thompson. “In many instances, she had clients who were already struggling financially and to pay attorney’s fees would have been financially crushing to them. So, she would often let unpaid bills go or represent people at no cost.” While Fuqua passed in late 2013, the memory of her generosity and kindness continues. In fact just last year, Fuqua was honored posthumously for the pro bono legal services she offered by the Fifth Circuit Pro Bono Committee, a group of lawyers and judges that strives to enhance equal access to justice by encouraging and promoting pro bono work. In support of her passion for justice, education and equal access, Fuqua directed the executor of her estate to establish a foundation that would

provide an income stream to specific charitable causes perpetually. According to Mike Metzger, executor of Fuqua’s estate, the Fuqua Foundation annually allocates its earning to three separate charitable organizations in the Mattoon area – the Lake Land College Foundation, the Salvation Army and Catholic Charities. “It is the goal of the board of directors of the Fuqua Foundation that our annual gifting will fund a minimum of four nursing scholarships at Lake Land College,” Metzger said. “Karen had a strong desire to quietly help those in-need in her community, both professionally and financially. Never seeking recognition, Karen was very generous with her time and talent and gave much back to the community she loved. Establishing the Fuqua Foundation will allow Karen to continue to quietly impact lives in her community for generations to come.” The Fuqua Foundation’s Board of Directors comprises representatives from each beneficiary as well as family members, including FuquaThompson and her daughter Nicole (Thompson) Zeller and son-in-law, Eric Zeller. “To be a part of sissy’s legacy is wonderful because it represents the kind, gracious and generous person she was, and that means so much to me,” said FuquaThompson.

The Fuqua family Laker legacy continues with Nicole Zeller’s career as a nursing instructor at Lake Land College. She is pictured here with her mother, Marilyn Fuqua-Thompson, a retired Allied Health Division Chair and nursing instructor.

HONORING THE PAST, HELPING CREATE THE FUTURE

HILL FEELS BLESSED TO GIVE TO EDUCATION

Leslie Hill established scholarships with the Lake Land College Foundation to honor her family members by assisting students with their education. She is pictured here in her home in Mattoon.

Leslie Hill is a seemingly ordinary woman. She lives in an unassuming house in an unassuming neighborhood. It’s the same house in which she grew up, and she adorns the interior with artifacts of her family’s history, something she cherishes dearly. She enjoys cleaning her home and working in her yard. She spends time with her cat Gracie Fern and participates in volunteer organizations throughout the community. For all intents and purposes, Hill is a pretty normal lady, but it’s not until you get to know her

do you realize this petite matron is actually doing extraordinary things. “There is no better way to honor my mother and father than to give to the Lake Land College Foundation,” Hill said. “It is a blessing to be able to give to others in hopes my gift helps them be successful in life.” Hill is making dreams come true with her support of the Lake Land College Foundation. In fact, she has established two scholarship funds with the foundation – the Fern Hill

Practical Nursing Endowment and the Hill-Hortenstine Agriculture Scholarship. According to Hill, she and her sister Nicki created these scholarship funds not only to honor her past, but as a way of looking toward the future. The impetus of her giving is her family. According to her, her mother Fern was a member of the second graduating class in nursing at Lake Land College in 1970. Enrolling in the Practical Nursing Program at the

age of 50, Hill said her mother set an example for her and the rest of her siblings. “My mother always wanted to be a nurse, but as one of 10 siblings, her family couldn’t afford to send her right out of high school,” Hill explained. “So, she married and raised her family like most young women did in that era. But it wasn’t until much later in life that she went back to school and completed the nursing program. Because of her example and strong will, she influenced me to make nursing my career choice too.” When her mother passed, Hill created the scholarship in order to assist adult students pursuing a nursing education. Hill said that it was important for her to establish criteria in her endowment that targeted older students because she understands the need students like this have.

than she anticipated. Working with her financial advisor, she reached out to the Lake Land College Foundation in 2009 and has given each year since. Additionally, she has made a significant bequest to the foundation in her estate plans so that her giving can continue in perpetuity. Hill said that she’s grown to develop a strong relationship with the Lake Land College Foundation. She meets the recipients of her gifts at the annual Scholarship Reception each spring and has gotten to know the students who benefit from her giving. “It’s such a blessing to help others in this way,” she said. “When I meet the students or receive a handwritten thank you note, it means a lot to me. It makes me know that I am making a big difference in their life.”

Fern Hill at left is pictured with her sister at the practical nursing pinning at Lake Land in 1970.

Pictured here is Fern Hill’s Lake Land College Practical Nursing pin from 1970.

“I think creating a scholarship for older students is important because right out of high school, you might not know what you want to do professionally, or you may not have the money to attend college right from high school,” Hill said. “So, it was important for me to give something that would help students who were in the same position as my mother was when she went back to school.” Recently, Hill established another scholarship, the Hill-Hortenstine Agriculture Scholarship, which is given to an agriculture student who demonstrates financial need and attains a 3.0 GPA. She created this fund as a way to honor her father and grandparents who farmed in Coles and Moultrie counties. “Giving to the foundation is a wonderful way to help others and also honor my family and heritage,” she said. “It means a lot to me to be able to contribute to others, especially those who need help the most.” Hill said that setting up the scholarship opportunities was easier

KEEPING HER HUSBAND’S MEMORY ALIVE, ONE DONOR

CONNECTS VETERANS & FAMILIES TO EDUCATION When Billie Jean Brant recalls the memories of her husband Toby, a certain glow lights her eyes. She remembers his rowdy playfulness and protective nature. She remembers how supportive he was of her music career and what a loving father he was for their daughters and grandchildren. “Toby was a big man with a big laugh, and he surely wasn’t afraid to weigh in on something,” Billie said. “He had an even bigger heart and a sense of humor that wouldn’t quit. I think that sass and attitude was helpful for dealing with the struggles he faced in his life.” Toby was a Vietnam combat veteran, who voluntarily enlisted in the Army in 1968. A Charleston native, who hadn’t explored much beyond Coles County, Toby was deployed to the Republic of South Vietnam in 1969. He returned home that same year, twice wounded, and as a double amputee. He was 20. “Toby didn’t let the loss of his legs define him,” Billie said. “His biggest challenge in life was dealing with how Vietnam veterans were treated when they got home. Things weren’t the way they are today. There wasn’t much work for a guy with prosthetic legs and there was this idea that Vietnam veterans weren’t well in the head, and that didn’t set well with a guy who voluntarily served his country out of a genuine sense of patriotic duty.” Billie Jean Brant created a Lake Land College Foundation Scholarship to help veterans and their families succeed in their college goals.

But those challenges didn’t stop Toby. He was honorably discharged from the armed forces and worked a variety of jobs throughout the years, raising his family. Although he didn’t receive formal education beyond high school, Brant said her husband was a voracious reader, educating himself and staying up-to-date on political issues. It was later in his life that Toby began to more formally share his perspective and stories with others. In 1988, he published a book, “Journal of a Combat Tanker,” where he chronicled his tour of duty. During this time, many young people turned to Toby to learn about his experiences in the Vietnam War and beyond. Brant said that her husband often allowed students to interview him about his life, and shortly after Toby passed away, she received a copy of a term paper from a student with whom Toby worked. “When I got that term paper in the mail, it touched me deeply,” Brant said. “To know he impacted the life of a young person and for that student to send me a copy of that work he influenced, meant a lot to me.” Two weeks before the revised edition of “Journal of a Combat Tanker” was due to be released in 2004, Toby died unexpectedly in a car accident. “His passing not only left a void in the lives of his family and friends, but the community as well,” Brant said. It was at that time that two close friends of Brant’s approached her with the suggestion of memorializing the spirit of her husband. “My close, dear friends Carl and Evelyn Furry came to me with the idea of establishing a scholarship on behalf of Toby,” Brant said. “I didn’t even realize this was an option, but it was something I agreed to do with the idea of helping veterans and their families go to college.”

To do this, Brant threw the biggest party she ever had, a benefit at the Charleston VFW, in honor of her husband. “I started working on it in July and we held it in October, 2005, on the first anniversary of his death,” Brant said. “I had received $6,000 in private donations in advance of the event and another $8,500 at the benefit itself.” Brant said that she was overwhelmed by the outpour of support the benefit received and is grateful to those who gave to Toby’s scholarship fund. “This is a way to keep Toby’s legacy alive and so many people who loved him came together to do just that,” she said.

“At the annual Scholarship Reception, I got the chance to meet Billie for the first time,” said Haney. “I was looking for her in the crowd, and when I found her, her face lit up. She was so happy to meet me, and I her. We hit it off and I am thankful for her gift to the Lake Land College Foundation and to have her in my life.” “I miss the good times with Toby and I’d give anything to have one more,” Brant said. “But by having this scholarship and by meeting the recipients of the scholarship, I always will stay connected to Toby and those good times.”

Brant said she chose Lake Land College as the recipient of her husband’s scholarship fund because not only were she and her stepdaughter alumnae of the college’s cosmetology program, but supporting the technical trades is important to her. “I decided to give to Lake Land because it’s the ideal school,” she explained. “It provides access to those who might not be ready for a four-year school, but also supports skilled trades, which I think is important.”

Billie Jean Brant is pictured with her scholarship recipient Tony Haney, Toledo.

Through the scholarship, which is geared toward financially assisting veterans and their families, including step-children, Brant stays connected with veterans who are working hard to receive an education. “I want to see our vets and their families go to school,” she said. “If we can help them in any way and if this scholarship is the difference between attending school and not, and ultimately impacting their life and career, then I have to do this.” So when Tony Haney, Toledo, who served three tours in Afghanistan received the Toby L. Brant Scholarship, Brant couldn’t have been more thrilled.

Toby Brant remembers his commrades at the Vietnam Veterans Wall before his passing in 2004.

LAKER EMPLOYEES UNITE IN GIVING Fiscal Year 2015 has been a time of evaluating and re-establishing core values and strategies for the Lake Land College Foundation and the organization’s Annual Fund was no exception. According to Executive Director for College Advancement Jackie Joines, the foundation’s Annual Fund seeks operational unrestricted monies, the opportunity to establish new donor relationships, and 100 percent participation for those donors to whom the foundation appeals during the Annual Fund drive. This year, the foundation conducted a yearend appeal to scholarship donors and endowment scholarship donors, worked with more than 20,000 alumni for a first-time appeal, and enhanced its Employee Giving Campaign. “I feel like the things we are working to put in place will establish the right kind of environment for the foundation to really grow,” Joines said. Joines said that while the Employee Giving Campaign was just one component of the Annual Fund, it was extremely successful. In fact, total employee giving increased by 56 percent from fiscal year 2014 to fiscal year 2015. “Part of our new strategy is to nurture a relationship with our donors,” Joines

explained. “People make transactions every day and those transactions usually have no emotional connection for them. But what we’re working to do is to build a relationship based foundation. When we can foster an emotional connection with a gift, it builds a relationship, and when that occurs, we’re engaging with our mission and fostering a connection.” Joines said that some of the best donors of an organization are its employees, and while they are often overlooked as key donors to an organization, it’s very important to include them in fundraising efforts. “The Lake Land College Foundation is unique in a way because our faculty and staff are the direct connection to the beneficiaries of the foundation’s gifts,” Joines said. “They often know students in need, or what might benefit their classroom or division in terms of equipment or materials. So having a close relationship with them and working together to help our students is advantageous to the entire organization.” To further connect with employees at the college, the foundation established division funds, meaning that a donor can specify the division at the college in which the gift is used, and these gifts support the overall program needs in each division.

According to Speech Communications and Broadcasting Instructor Greg Powers, he gave to the foundation during its Annual Fund drive because he was able to directly give to his division. “My hope is the gifts that our division receives can assist students in various ways inside and outside of the classroom, whether it is getting new equipment for our programs or assisting a student with tuition and fees,” Powers said. Powers said that the most pressing issue for students he works with directly is usually financial hardships. He said that he works with a core of students each day who have financial needs including tuition, gas money and rent, and many students really struggle to make ends meet, especially while attending school. “It’s been a great experience to initiate the Employee Giving Campaign,” Joines said. “We know our employees give their time and talents to Lake Land, and now many of them are giving their personal resources, which speaks a lot to their character and makes it more compelling for others to give when employees are willing to support their own efforts and invest in what they do day-to-day.”
