Rodeo action returns to Poway for 47 year TH

A

47-year community tradition returns Sept. 27 and 28 when the Poway Rodeo holds three performances in the Russ Sheldon Arena on the Poway Valley Riders Association grounds. The Friday night performance starts at 7:30 p.m. There is also a Saturday afternoon show at 1 p.m. and an evening show at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for all three can be purchased at powayrodeo.com. The three rodeo performances typically draw a total of about 12,000 fans, said Rodeo Committee Chairman Murray Bankhead. Last year the Saturday night show sold out, while Friday night came close to that mark, he said. Adults-only “Rodeo Jam” dances will be held after the Friday and Saturday night performances. They are free with paid rodeo admissions. Valid IDs are required. Music will again be by the Patrick Howard Trampus Band. (See related story.) In additional to providing family entertainment, the rodeo is a fundraiser for the community, Bankhead said. This year the rodeo committee will again make a donation to both Sam’s Posse and to the Jean McLaughlin Women’s Center at Palomar Medical Center Poway. (Formerly known as Pomerado Hospital.)

The rodeo is comprised of seven competitions: bull riding, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, calf roping and barrel racing.

“The Poway Rodeo is a great civic center,” said Saddle bronc riding will be among the competition highlights. Four-time PRCA Announcer of the Year Wayne Brooks will be Bankhead. Assisting will be announcer Wayne Brooks, the rodeo queens and princesses and professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls. A portion of this year’s Poway Rodeo proceeds will go to Sam Burt was born on May 31, 1993. He was eight weeks premature, and soon after his birth he was diagnosed with a genetic condition so rare, there were only five documented cases worldwide. He was both intellectually and physically challenged, and in his lifetime Sam would endure more than 30 surgical procedures, and countless hospitalizations. Sam was the friend you would be lucky to have. Kind, compassionate and funny. He loved horseback riding, baseball, puppets, music and books. Sam was always up for an adventure and would embrace a trip to Legoland or the feed store with the same enthusiasm. Throughout his lifetime, Sam maintained a strength and courage that would inspire all those around him. Unable to speak, Sam had a way to make you want to become a better person, without ever saying a word.

Registration for participants is on a first come, first served basis and is limited to 50 participants. Go to www.samsposse. org beginning to register. For more information, contact Deborah at info@samposse.org. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the event, please click on “Get Involved” then “Volunteer” to sign up. Be sure to reference Sam’s Posse Exception Rodeo in the “message” section. In 2009, a virus infected Sam’s heart and he was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. In March of 2013 Sam lost his battle with DCM, just two months shy of his 20th birthday. Sam and his parents did not let his diagnosis define who he was, or limit his activities. They embraced life together, and took every opportunity to educate the public on the importance of acceptance and inclusion, for people living with disabilities. Through Sam’s Posse, formed in 2012, Sam’s family continues to fiercely advocate for and support organizations with the same goal. The Posse would raise $100,000.00 in support of Make- A-Wish, funding numerous wishes and fulfilling the dreams of children with lifethreatening illnesses. Poway Rodeo traces its history back 47 years

T

29th Year Proudly Supporting THE POWAY RODEO!

he idea of a rodeo in Poway was started by two Poway Valley Riders Association members, John Walker and Jack Miller. It took them several years to prepare and make all of the necessary arrangements to sponsor a sanctioned PRCA rodeo in Poway. They and their wives traveled to Oklahoma City, to the National Finals Rodeo, spending their own money, to make the contacts with the PRCA, stock contractors, specialty acts, and rodeo announcer Bob Tallman. Through their efforts PVRA, The Lions Club, and the Poway Chamber of Commerce formed the Poway Rodeo Committee and produced the first Poway Rodeo in 1973.

The Poway Rodeo Committee is committed to bringing you a fast-paced, exciting event that will leave you at the edge of your seat.

The Poway Rodeo will continue to feature the traditions of the Old West and cowboy heritage while honoring our 46 years of hosting the Poway Rodeo. The event is a natural fit with Poway, whose “City in the Country” motto plays up a rural and horsefriendly atmosphere despite the city’s proximity to San Diego.

“The Poway Rodeo is a great civic center,” said Murray Bankhead, who became chairman two years ago after serving two years as vice-chair and seven years on the board of directors. He said it’s a tradition that over the years has gone from local to regional in interest, attracting fans from all over the county and beyond.

This Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned event is the final chance for the cowboys to earn money to qualify for the National Rodeo Finals in December. The Poway Rodeo is also one of seven regional rodeos belonging to the Southern California Rough Stock Association, which means additional prize money opportunities for cowboys.

Many volunteers make Poway Rodeo happen

he Poway Rodeo is fast approaching and while final preparations are being made, the work on this annual event began much earlier.

“(Organizing the rodeo) is a year-long thing,” said Murray Bankhead, the chair of the rodeo committee. “Planning for (the next year) by our volunteers starts almost as soon as we finish (the current rodeo).” Bankhead said finding sponsorships is the hardest part of organizing the rodeo and the part of planning that begins “almost immediately.” Members of the committee also attend rodeo industry meetings throughout the year, learning about what is new and what other rodeos are doing to increase attendance, among other things. This is Bankhead’s third year as chair of the rodeo. He previously served as vice-chair for two years and has been on the executive board for about nine years, he said. He became involved with the rodeo through his work with the Poway Valley Riders Association, of which he is a past president. Bankhead and his family moved to Poway in 1999, drawn by its horse-friendliness, though he now lives in Ramona. “(Poway being horse-friendly) is what makes it the city in the country,” he said. “Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch are great places, but there’s no horses.” He became involved in the PVRA through his wife and stepdaughters, who were riders. His daughter was a rodeo queen, he said.

“It’s a learning process each year,” said Bankhead. “I learned that unlike a lot of other rodeos, Poway gets a lot of new patrons, people who are new to rodeo.” Bankhead said the Poway Rodeo draws people from all over the county and is a big draw for international visitors. “(The rodeo) is a true piece of Americana,” he said. He added that the rodeo is also a draw for millennials, who are “always looking to try new things.” The rodeo committee has changed its marketing strategy to embrace social media, he said, which seems to reach a new audience. One challenge the Poway Rodeo faces that rodeos in places like Ramona and Lakeside do not is the Poway Rodeo does not have its own rodeo grounds; it uses the PVRA arena. “We have to transform the PVRA grounds to rodeo grounds and tear them down after,” Bankhead said. This includes adding cattle chutes, pens and more bleachers. Another challenge is the time limitation for setup, as the rodeo only gets access to the arena one week prior to the actual rodeo events. “My hat is off to the grounds crew,” Bankhead said. “Many of these volunteers take days off work to do it.” Bankhead credits the work of the rodeo executive board and its many volunteers with its success. “They really make this happen,” he said. “They work very hard year round. Without them, we couldn’t pull this off.” He also credited the rodeo’s sponsors, “without whom we could not put on as top-notch a rodeo as we do,” he said.

Rodeo livestock have long and healthy lives: Many of today’s top bucking horses are 20 years old, and many bulls are active buckers at 15 years of age. Veterinarians attribute these long, healthy life spans to good care, quality feed and adequate exercise. Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association rules prohibit the use of sharpened spurs and other implements that could harm an animal. Human skin is one to two millimeters thick; horse hide is five millimeters thick; bull hide is seven millimeters thick. Stock contractors invest a great deal of money in their breeding and purchase programs; many contractors pay up to five or even six figures for a top-rated bucking animal. Naturally, they are very motivated to take care of these investments.

PRCA rules require flank straps to be lined with fleece or neoprene in the flank area; flank straps are tightened just enough to encourage the animal to kick behind itself instead of hopping around the arena. Overtightening would result in the animal’s refusal to move at all, much less buck. Flank straps do not contact an animal’s genitals.

Both bulls and horses have natural bucking tendencies; many do so while playing together in pastures, just as horses naturally race each other. What makes an animal a candidate for rodeo livestock is the absolute determination to buck if something is on its back – often an inherited characteristic, which breeders now work carefully to bring out in “Born to Buck” programs.

Rodeo queens are ambassadors to community

By Elizabeth Marie Himchak

lways wanted to know what team roping entails or more about the event you are seeing during the Poway Rodeo on Sept. 27 and 28? Just look to the rodeo royalty for the answers.

Poway Rodeo Queen Kristen Lopez, Junior Queen Makenna Hyland, Young Miss Stella Erb and Little Princess Jackie Sipe will be available throughout the two-day event to answer questions, sign autographs and fill other ambassador duties during the 47th annual event. The 2019 Poway Rodeo court competed earlier this year in personal interview, horsemanship and public speaking to prove their equine, rodeo and current events knowledge plus their riding ability. They also had to demonstrate proficiency in horse science, tack and terminology before having the opportunity to represent Poway at rodeo events throughout Southern California. Lopez, 23, is a Lakeside resident and vet assistant in the emergency critical care department at Pet Emergency and Specialty in La Mesa.

Hyland is a 16-year-old Escondido resident and junior at San Pasqual High School. Poway Rodeo Junior Queen is her second title, after having served as Junior Miss Rodeo Lakeside in 2017 and 2018. “I only started riding four years ago, but most of my whole life ... have been in pageants, starting when my mom had to walk me onto the stage,” she said. Hyland said she “found my niche” with horses and has fully immersed herself in “supporting the Western way of life. ... It is a sport I love.” She added, “Ever since I was a young age, my mom taught me to go for my dreams and work hard. I like the grittiness of rodeo. It is the most dangerous sport on dirt and one of the best.” She is the first in her family to ride horses, which Hyland said she has loved since childhood when she would ride her friends’ horses for trail riding. Queens, continued on page 9

She is a newcomer to the rodeo pageant world, having just started riding horses 1 1/2 years ago. While Poway Rodeo Queen is her first title, Lopez said she has been involved with rodeos for many years since her brother is a former bull rider and her family has helped out at local rodeos for a long time. “All my friends are in the rodeo queen world and they talked me into it, saying I should try (entering a pageant),” she said. Her favorite aspects of being a rodeo queen include how the children come up to request her autograph. “I’m excited about this year and am looking forward to meeting everyone who comes (to the Poway Rodeo),” Lopez said. When seen riding during rodeo events, such as the queens’ run, Lopez said she will be on a quarterhorse named Jack, a rope horse whom she leases and called “a sweetheart.” As for her favorite event to watch, “It is definitely team roping,” Lopez said. “When I started seriously riding I learned how to team rope ... instantly fell in love with it ... and have always wanted to watch this section (of the competition).”

“I instantly had a passion for rodeo,” she said, which led to her competing in barrel racing, roping, pole bending, team tying, breakaway and goat tying through the California Junior Rodeo Association. “It is the amateur league for rodeo,” she explained. Due to her junior queen responsibilities — including running sponsor flags, the queens’ run and helping get cattle out of the arena, all while on horseback — Hyland said she will not be competing at the Poway Rodeo. She will be riding Peewee, her Appendix horse, which she said is a thoroughbred and quarterhorse mix.

His name is “ironic,” Hyland said because “He is huge, 16 hands, which is very large for a horse. A lot of people ask me how he could get the name Peewee (considering his size). It is because when he was younger, in the pasture, he was very small and the vet said he would not grow.” She plans to take time to watch the team roping because “I know how hard it is ... (and it is) exciting and thrilling.” Stella is a 10-year-old Lakeside resident and fifth grader at Lakeside Farms Elementary who, in addition to her Young Miss responsibilities, will be competing in junior barrels during the Poway Rodeo. She will be riding Vixen, a bay roan quarterhorse that has been a “queen horse” in the past and is “nice and adorable,” Stella said. She has two horses at home — a 10-year-old muddy buckskin quarterhorse named Playboy and a 27-year-old quarterhorse pinto named Kiki. While she practices her rodeo events on Playboy, Stella said she will not be riding him at the Poway Rodeo because “most of the time he will not listen and he gets stage fright.” She said junior barrel racing is her favorite competitive event for her because “I like going fast and barrels are really fun.” As for what she is looking forward to watching at the Poway Rodeo, Stella said, “I’m definitely looking forward to the mutton busting because it is adorable to watch little kids riding sheep.” She also will be watching the bronc riding because “I like watching cowboys riding bucking broncos.” Jackie is a 6-year-old San Marcos resident in first grade at Knob Hill Elementary School. The Poway Rodeo Little Princess pageant was her first competition, something she wanted to do “because I saw the rodeo queens doing (their duties) and thought it would be fun.” She attended the Poway Rodeo for the first time last year, but added, “I have been going to other rodeos since I was very tiny.” Jackie — who comes from “a horse family” — said she started riding horses at age 2 and won her first silver buckle at age 3 for winning a series of riding shows. During the Poway Rodeo she will be riding a quarterhorse named Bob, whom she called “a sweet hugger.” Jackie said she is looking forward to riding around the rodeo grounds in a truck while passing out T-shirts, greeting people and signing autographs. When she gets the opportunity to watch some of the action in the arena, her focus will be on the steer wrestling because “it is really fun to watch.”

Rider Kiesner to entertain at rodeo performances By Emily Sorensen

P

oway Rodeo attendees will experience the many skills of entertainer Rider Kiesner at the Poway Rodeo.

Kiesner will perform his signature trick roping, gun spinning and whip cracking acts at the rodeo, which will be held Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Poway Valley Riders Association arena, 14336 Tierra Bonita Road. He is a four-time world champion trick roper, a two-time world champion gun spinner and a two-time world champion all-around western performer. He has been nominated four times as the PRCA Dress Act of the Year. Kiesner described his acts as traditional Western acts and part of the traditional American West, such as with Will and Roy Rogers. “I try to add some flash and flare, but it’s what you would have seen at a rodeo 100 years ago,” Kiesner said. Trick roping is like dancing with a rope, he said, and began as a competition in Mexico before evolving into a performance. Gun spinning is “like the movie ‘Tombstone,’ (doing) tricks,” Kiesner said. Whip cracking involves creating its signature cracking sound by breaking the sound barrier. Kiesner is a fifth-generation cowboy. Born in San Luis Obispo, he grew up traveling the country with his horse trainer father and his family, competing in rodeo events alongside his father and brothers. He competed in youth and little britches rodeos as long as he can remember and won his first buckle when he was 5 years old. Kiesner said he moved nine times before he was 11 years old, as his father trained horses on ranches around the country. When he was 9 years old, he was given a Will Rogers trick roping kit for Christmas. “It was a cold winter in Wyoming, so I practiced (indoors all winter),” Kiesner said. Two years later, he began performing at professional rodeos and with his family at shows. Kiesner performed alongside his family, traveling the country in a truck and trailer, until he turned 18 years old and was able to obtain his own professional card. He has been performing as a solo entertainer since. He has performed in 49 states (only missing Hawaii) and multiple countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Oman, Dubai, Lebanon and France. For anyone wondering how to be like him, Kiesner said that like anything, his western entertainment and rodeo skills take a lot of practice. “My brother (a rodeo competitor) and I aren’t special, we just worked at it a lot,” he said. He has practiced his skills every day for the last 19 years, he added.

‘Rodeo Jam’ dances after evening rodeos njoy a good country time at the adults-only “Rodeo Jam” dance following the Friday and Saturday night rodeo performances.

New this year will be an opportunity to win two Disneyland “park-hopper” tickets. A pair will be given out Friday and Saturday nights. Participants need not be present to win. Music will again be provided by the popular Patrick Howard Trampus Band. Trampus is a Southern California country music artist. Growing up in rural San Diego County, he found a love for hay fields, dirt roads and country music. Influenced at an early age by artists like Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams, Jr., he honed his singing skills in church and around campfires. By age 18, Trampus formed his first band. They played the Southern California country

scene, opening for major acts like Billy Ray Cyrus, Mark Chesnutt, Wade Hayes and Jamie O’Neil. Trampus took time away from music to raise his family, but his love for music and entertaining never left him. In 2014, he began his musical journey again, forming a new band in San Diego and playing venues from Petco Park to The San Diego County Fair. Trampus is once again doing what he loves: Bringing a stadium-like show to a honky-tonk near you. Trampus has joined forces with Los Angeles-based Whiskey Tango, a talented, young and hungry group of musicians. This is no traditional country band! Their country-rock roots show in every song they play. Patrick Howard Trampus and Whiskey Tango promise one killer experience!
