OVERVIEW

Boasting the grand elegance of the historic Mitchell Wing and the modern versatility of the Macquarie Street Wing, the State Library of New South Wales is truly a unique venue. The more contemporary Macquarie Street wing houses the Metcalfe Auditorium; fully equipped with racked seating and a state-of-the-art projection room ensuring the success of presentations, conferences and lectures. The Mitchell wing houses the Galleries; with a broad exhibition programme, it provides the ideal space for product launches and larger cocktail-style receptions. TheDixsonRoomwithglimpsesacrosstheDomain,isideallyutilisedforconferences, wedding receptions or corporate events. Smaller rooms are also available for more intimate gatherings.

DESCRIPTION AND RECOMMENDED USE

The 130 seat Metcalfe Auditorium provides an effective venue for a wide range of presentations, seminars, meetings and lectures. Its modern decor, spot lighting and seating, facilitate comfort and concentration. The Auditorium has been recently updated with a fully equipped projection room; catering can be provided in the nearby McDonalds Room

The McDonalds Room is ideal for meetings, presentations, workshops, luncheons and for up to 100 people cocktail parties. It is a modern triangular shaped room, featuring a wall of glass, overlooking the courtyard between the old and new wings of the State Library and often used as the catering area for the Metcalfe Auditorium

MITCHELL WING - Ground Floor FUNCTION ROOM

DESCRIPTION AND RECOMMENDED USE The Dixson Room is located on the ground floor of the Mitchell wing and offers an elegant historic setting with views across the Domain and to Woolloomooloo. This is a warm and spacious room with high ceilings and original oil paintings adorning the walls; it is ideal for conferences, luncheons, dinners and cocktail parties. Often used for sit-down meetings and weddings for up to 120 people.

DIXSON ROOM

The Shakespeare Room located on the ground floor of the Mitchell wing commemorates the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. Arthur G Benfield’s stained glass window, the Seven Ages of Man, depicts a scene from As You Like It. This intimate room is ideal for small dinners and cocktail parties for up to 15 people

SHAKESPEARE ROOM

The Friends room is on the ground floor of the historic Mitchell Library building. This beautiful space is the original Mitchell Reading Room, opened to the public in 1910. It features enameled steel and leadlight bookcases which hold editions of Cervantes’ Don Quixote from the magnificent collection of the late Dr Ben Haneman. This space is often use for cocktail parties for up to 130 people

FRIENDS ROOM*

The Vestibule of the Mitchell wing features; the Marble replica of the 1644 Tasman Map, some of the finest stained glass in Sydney by artist Arthur Benfield and a magnificent white Italian Botticino marble staircase with turned balustrades. All of these features add to the neo classical splendour of the historic State Library. The Mitchell Vestibule is a unique venue for cocktail parties and ceremonies for up to 150 people

DESCRIPTION AND RECOMMENDED USE The Jean Garling Room located on Level 1 of the Mitchell wing, is a heritage listed venue which will simply take your breath away. With the warmth of its surrounding timber features along with stained glass windows with view of the CBD and Harbour Bridge, it provides and ideal venue for seminars, workshops and meetings. It is a beautiful setting for intimate The Jean Garling Anteroom is a classic room with natural light, located on level 1 of the Mitchell wing. The room is adorned with oil paintings and is enhanced by its heritage surroundings. Equipped with modern technology, it is the perfect venue for seminars, meetings and presentations. These are smaller rooms that are available for more intimate gatherings. All located on Level 1 of the Mitchell wing they all provide a professional and supportive environment designed for seminars, workshops and training sessions

The Mitchell Galleries located on Level 1 of the Mitchell wing offer a rare quality of simple splendour and warm hospitality. Cocktail parties and presentations are accommodated and enhanced by the classical surroundings of Australian craftsmanship along with the current exhibitions

The State Library of NSW has a single licensed contract catering arrangement in place with Laissez-faire Catering. At Laissez-faire we are committed to sourcing the best single ingredients available at the right time from the right supplier, and maximising our purpose-built kitchens and team of chefs to best utilise each of those raw ingredients. We work with premium and local seafood and beef suppliers; artisan cheese producers and quality local fruit and vegetable growers to develop inspiring, seasonal driven menus that will bring the best produce to your table. Our Food and Beverage team believe passionately that food and wine are fundamental to the success of any event large or small, and are committed to providing an unforgettable experience through innovative and creative cuisine, and outstanding service. GENERAL INFORMATION ENTRANCE AND INVITATIONS Unless with prior arrangement the entrance for guests is via the Mitchell entrance on Shakespeare place. EVENT TIMES So your event runs smoothly, your selected venue/s are only available to guests as per the agreed times in your proposal. This ensures the rooms will be set and food and beverage service available. If you expect guests to arrive early please let us know in advance and we will try to accommodate. All guests must depart within 30 minutes of the agreed departure time. After this time a fee of $150.00 per hour or part thereof applies. A security fee is applicable for all events outside State Library operating hours: $85.00 per hour – Weekday, Saturday, Sunday State Library operating hours are Monday to Thursday: 9.00am-8.00pm Friday: 9.00am-5.00pm Saturday and Sunday: 10.00am-5.00pm BANNERS, DECORATION AND DISPLAY MATERIAL Most venues within the State Library are heritage listed. All banners, decorations and displays need to be free standing. We would be happy to discuss with you ways to display your material. VENUE SET UP A floor plan will be provided to you prior to your event. This floor plan will clearly show the layout and number of tables, chairs and any other furniture or equipment you have requested. While we will endeavour to assist with any requests for additional items on the day we may be unable to assist due to the amount of stock we have on hand. AUDIO VISUAL Please confirm all audio visual requirements a minimum of three working days prior to your event. It is recommended that you discuss this with us at the time of booking. We can produce very competitive quotes on any requirements such as audio recording, video recording, media splitters, large sound systems, plasmas, rear projection and many more items. Please discuss your requirements with your event manage. Parking There is no onsite parking at The State Library of New South Wales. GENERAL INFORMATION CATERING REQUIREMENTS Your Event Manager will discuss with you your catering requirements, ideally three weeks prior to your event. At this time if you have any special requirements please let us know. Additional charges may apply for some dietary requirements. An Event Order will be produced outlining the catering and associated services required for your event. CONFIRMATION OF NUMBERS To ensure the success of your event, we ask that you indicate the approximate number of guests seven days prior to your function. The guaranteed number of guests is required five working days prior to your function. This is the Minimum Number for which you will be charged. SURCHARGES • Continuous tea and coffee is available and pricing is on request • For functions with fewer than 30 guests additional staff charges will apply • To allow sit-down with any stand-up only/buffet menu an extra $5.00 will apply per person • Functions held on weekends and public holidays will incur additional staff charges PLEASE DISCUSS WITH YOUR EVENT MANAGER • Function finishing after midnight will incur a labour levy of $3.50 per guest per hour after midnight • Menus served with “alternate choice” will incur a surcharge of $5.00 per course per guest • All surcharges are based on the Minimum number provided five days prior to your function • Please note we will cater for approximately 10% of Minimum numbers as vegetarian INFORMATION We can tailor our food to suit your needs and your event. Please discuss your food and beverage ideas with your Event Manager. Due to health and safety issues, all food and beverages remain the property of the caterer and can not be taken away by the client after an event. Menus are priced on a per person basis. All menus stipulate Minimum Numbers; please consult your Event Manager for functions with fewer guests. Other charges may apply.
