Miniprint Finland NÄYTTELY Jo vuodesta 1992 lähtien järjestetty kansainvälinen Miniprint Finland pienoisgrafiikan triennaali on koonnut alansa huiput ympäri maailmaa yhteen näyttelyyn. Vuoden 2014 Miniprint Finland järjestettiin Hyvinkään taidemuseossa 28.3. - 18.5. Aiemmin tapahtuma on järjestetty aina Lahdessa; Galleria Marian Portissa ja vuodesta 1998 lähtien Lahden taidemuseossa. Lahden taidegraafikot ry:n järjestämä, osallistujamäärältään Pohjoismaiden suurin kansainvälinen taidegrafiikan näyttely on profiloitunut selkeästi: Miniprint Finland on graafikoiden keskuudessa hyvin tunnustettu ja suosittu näyttely niin kotimaassa kuin kansainvälisestikin. Näyttely on varsinkin nuorille taiteilijoille hieno mahdollisuus saada töitään esille. Triennaali lisää graafisen taiteen kiinnostavuutta, ymmärrystä ja arvostusta niin taiteilijoiden kuin katsojienkin keskuudessa. Miniprint Finlandiin osallistuva taiteilija saa ehdottaa näyttelyyn enintään kolmea grafiikan ja piirustuksen menetelmin toteutettua työtään. Ehdotettujen teosten enimmäismittat saavat olla enintään 17 cm x 20 cm, syvyys enintään 5 cm. Teoksia ja taiteilijoita haetaan kaikkialta maailmasta pääosin sähköisten menetelmien avulla. Sosiaalinen media on osaltaan edesauttanut ”Miniprint Finland-tietoisuuden” leviämistä ja Miniprintin facebook-sivuilla onkin jo yli 1500 seuraajaa. Miniprint Finlandiin lähetettävien teosten taso on korkea, mutta valitettavasti monet teokset karsiutuvat itse näyttelystä. Tämänkertaisen näyttelyn teokset valitsi viisijäseninen jury kaksivaiheisessa jurytyksessä. Ensimmäiseen vaiheeseen

saapui reilusti yli 2000 teosta 758 taiteilijalta 34 maasta. Näistä varsinaiseen näyttelyyn valittiin 368 teosta 138 taiteilijalta 34 maasta. Miniprint Finland -näyttely on vakiinnuttanut asemansa taiteilijoiden keskuudessa, ja näyttelyyn lähetetään joka kerta lähes sama määrä teosehdotuksia. On hyvin mielenkiintoista seurata, minkälaisia maakohtaisia muutoksia eri kerroilla tapahtuu. Vuoden 2014 näyttelyn erityispiirteiksi nousi Iso-Britannian tavallista suurempi ehdotettujen, ja myös näyttelyyn päässeiden teosten määrä. Toinen poikkeama oli perinteikkään taidegrafiikan maan Puolan tavallista pienempi osallistujamäärä. Yhteistä kaikille Miniprint-näyttelyille on tietenkin Suomen vahva edustus sekä muun muassa japanilaisen taidegrafiikan hämmästyttävän korkea taso ja runsas osallistujamäärä. Näyttelyssä on esillä lähes kaikilla mahdollisilla grafiikantekniikoilla toteutettuja töitä. Miniprint Finlandiin valikoituneiden teosten tekniikoiden ja ilmaisutapojen moninaisuus antaa kattavan kuvan siitä, miltä taidegrafiikka maailmalla tänä päivänä näyttää. Näyttelyssä esillä olleet työt ripustettiin tänäkin vuonna maittain. Näin katsoja pystyy hahmottamaan nopeasti, miten eri puolilla maailmaa taidegrafiikka ymmärretään, ja mitä eroavaisuuksia tai yhtäläisyyksiä tekotavoissa, sisällöissä ja ilmaisussa on. Järjestyksessään kahdeksannella Miniprint Finland triennaalilla oli ensimmäistä kertaa teema, ääretön ∞. Pääsarjan lisäksi näyttelyssä oli oma osionsa exlibriksille.

Miniprint Finland EXHIBITION The international Miniprint Finland exhibition, which has been organised since 1992, has gathered the top of the field from all over the world in one exhibition. The 2014 Miniprint Finland was held in Hyvinkää At Museum 28.3. - 18.5. Previous exhibitions since 1996 has been held in Lahti Art Museum and before that in Gallery Marian Portti. The internationat small sized graphic art exhibition, organised by The Graphic Artist Association of Lahti, is Scandinavia’s biggest measured by the number of participants and has profiled itself clearly. Miniprint Finland is very recognized and popular exhibition among graphic artists in both nationally and internationally. The exhibition is, especially for the young artists, a great way to exhibit their work. The triennal increases the intrest, understanding and appreciation towards graphic art among both artists and spectators. Miniprint Finland participant can offer up to three works produced by printmaking and drawing methods. The maximum dimensions of the offered works are 17 cm x 20 cm and the depth can be not more than 5 cm. Works of art and artists are called for all over the world mainly by using electronic means. The social media has been a positive factor in spreading the ”Miniprint Finland-awareness” and the miniprint Facebookpage has already gathered over 1500 followers. The quality of the prints sent to the exhibition is high, but unfortunately many of them are eliminated from the actual exhibition. The art works, to the exhibition taking the place this time, was chosen by a five-member jury in twostaged process. In the first stage there was send

well over 2000 works from 758 artists from 34 countries from which the jury chose 368 prints from 138 artists to the actual exhibition. Miniprint Finland -exhibition has entrench its position among the artist, and the number of offered works is virtually the same for every exhibition. It’s very fascinating to monitor the changes by countries that take place each time. The characteristic for the 2014 exhibition was the unusually large number of participants from the United Kingdom. Another surprising statistics was the low participant activity from the traditional printmaking country Poland. A common factor for all the Miniprint exhibitions is, of course the strong representation of Finland and among others the high quality of the Japanese printmaking and their great amount of participants. The exhibition showcases almost every printmaking techniques imaginable. The variety of the techniques and the ways of expression in the prints, chosen for the Miniprint Finland exhibition, gives us an inclusive perspective of what printmaking looks like today. This year as other years the exhibition was built by countries. This way the exhibition visitor can quickly perceive how printmaking is understood in different parts of the world, and what differences or similarities can be found in the means, the content of art and the ways of expression. The eighth Miniprint Finland triennal had a theme, for the first time in its history - Infinity ∞. In addition to the main category there was also an own section for the Ex Libris -exhibition.

Nykyään yhteiskuntaamme on keskittynyt mitattaviin arvoihin. Metsän arvosta tulee metsäyhtiön arvo, eikä metsän meille tarjoaman hengitettävän ilman arvo. Taiteen arvo jää taloudellisen kasvun varjoon on piilossa Jo heti synnyttyämme, meillä on kielellinen kapasiteetti, joka on meidän olemassaolomme keskus. Ja kaikki taide juontuu tästä kielen kyvystä. Joten: taide on eksistenitiaalinen työkalu kommunikointiin välillämme.

Our society today is preoccupied by measurable values. The value of forests becomes the value of forest enterprise and not the value of breathable air that the forests provide us with. The value of art is hidden in ideas of economic growth and not in the language possibilities that art gives us. From birth we have our language capacity, it is the center of our existence. And all art comes from this language ability. So; art is an existential tool for communication between us.

Luottaaksemme tähän kykyyn, taiteen on kommunikoitava, liittyttävä mahdollisuuksien maanalaiseen rihmastoon ja vastustaa nykyaikaista harhaanjohtavaa arvostusta kaikkea mitattavaa kohtaan. Nämä totiset ajatukset eivät vastusta tämän päivän juhlaa (Miniprint 2014 avajaiset, suom. huom.). Päinvastoin. Se, mitä näemme tänään on todellinen panos elinvoimaiselle tulevaisuudelle, ja osa ilmiselvää vastaliikettä: jatkaa monenlaisen taiteen tekemistä, ottaa ohjat ja kertoa siitä keitä ja mitä olemme.

To trust the ability art has to communicate, to join an underground mycelium of possibilities and to resist the contemporary misleading valuation of the measurable. These serious thoughts do not oppose the feast we have here today (Miniprint 2014 exhibition vernissage, translator’s note). On the contrary. What we see here is a true contribution to the living future, a part of the obvious counter-move: to continue to make art of every kind, to take command and tell about who and what we are.

Grand Prix Taidegrafiikka on toiminut ilmaisuni muotona viime vuosien ajan. Erityisesti avainlaatta –menetelmällä olen pystynyt luomaan muotoja puhtaalla, mutta kuitenkin narratiivisella tavalla. Toistuva puupiirroslaatoilla työskentely ja värikerrosten vedostaminen tuottavat sekä yhtenäisyyttä että erilaisuutta. Teokseni ilmaisevat satujen sisäistä maailmaa sekä prosessin aikana tulevia iloisia yllätyksiä. Taide on näkymättömien asioiden ilmentymistä kuten myös niiden jakamista muiden kanssa. Grafiikka on luovana prosessina tuottanut minulle onnellisuutta ja tyytyväisyyttä vedosteni paljastaessa erittäin ainutlaatuisen fantasiamaailman, jonka minun ”sydämeni” näkee.

Printmaking has been my major form of expression for the past years. Particularly with the reduction block method, I have been able to produce forms in a pure yet narrative manner. Repeatedly working on wood blocks and printing layers of colors produce unity as well as differentiation. My works convey the inner most world of fairy-tales and joyous surprises during the process of making. Art is about manifestation of things which cannot be seen as well as the delight in sharing such with others. Printmaking as a creative process has given me happiness and satisfaction as my prints reveal a very unique fantasy world that my “heart” sees.

Honourable Prize Sisäisenä vaistonani taiteilijana/graafikkona on halu tutkia viivaa ja tilaa syövytetyn pysyvyyden ja rekonstruktion kautta. Käytän viivaa sekä järjestäytyneenä että viitteellisenä tapana ilmaista elämässäni olevaa rytmiä. Vertaan usein tätä rytmiä musiikkiin johtuen kokemuksestani jousisoittimien parissa. Sekä musisointiini että taiteen tekemiseeni on kehittynyt selkeä malli.

My core instinct as an artist/printmaker is a desire to explore line and space through etched permanence and reconstruction. I use line in both an orderly and gestural manner to convey a rhythm that exists in my life. I often compare this rhythm to music because of my experience playing stringed instruments. There is a distinct and developed pattern that is created through my act of playing music and making art.

Nykyiset teokseni hyödyntävät perinteisen grafiikan prosessia, piirtämistä ja kollaasin elementtejä sekä sisällyttävät visuaalisen musiikin ja rytmin käsitteet. Teoksissani visuaalinen musiikki ja rytmi ilmenevät jälkien energiana, muotojen toistona sekä hienovaraisina värien variaatioina. Musikaalinen sointiväri, tai äänen/ nuotin väri, auttaa erottamaan samaan aikaan soivat soittimet. Monissa visuaalisissa asetelmissani olen sitoutunut luomaan dynaamisen soinnin.

My current work utilizes the processes of traditional printmaking, drawing, and collage media elements and incorporates the concepts of visual music and rhythm. In my work, visual music and rhythm appear through the energy of the marks, repetition of shapes, and subtle color variations. Musical timbre, or the color of sound/tone, helps to distinguish instruments playing together in the same time. In many visual compositions I am engaged in creating a dynamic timbre. Honourable Mention Esillä olleet teokseni ovat osa suurta, 100 teoksen etsaus-sarjaa bunkkereista. Bunkkerit, vaikka ovatkin pieniä kooltaan, toimivat monumentaalisina luoden vaikutelman tuhoutumattomuudesta, läpipääsemättömyydestä, turvallisuudesta ja agression mahdollisuudesta... mutta nämä pienet mustat bunkkerit suuren aiheuttavat lukumääränsä ja määrittelemättömän taustansa (tyhjyys) avulla hämmennyksen, päämäärättömyyden, eristäytymisen ja epäonnistumisen tunteen, joka voidaan yhdistää nykyiseen maailman tilaan, jossa elämme. Symboliikka on selvä: ei ole olemassa täysin eristäytynyttä ja turvallista tilaa, eimuilta eikä itseltämme.

Works that have been exhibited are part of the large (100 pcs) series of etchings with views of the bunkers, which, although small dimensions, working very monumental causing the impression of indestructibility, impenetrability, safety and possibility of aggression... but, these tiny black bunkers due to their large number and undefined background (emptiness) causes feelings of confusion, aimlessness, isolation and failure that can be put in the context of the currently state of the world in which we live. The symbolism is clear, there isn’t a place of complete isolation and security nor from others and even from ourselves.

Honourable Mention Puupiirros ”Tamarind” on 15 x 20 cm kokoinen värivedos vuodelta 2013. Tamarind on trooppinen puu, jonka siemenistä ihmiset tekevät siirappia. Itse puuta käytetään myös teolliseen tarkoitukseen.

The woodcut” Tamarind ”is a collourprint 15 x 20 cm, from 2013. The Tamarind is a tropical tree and gives seeds from which people can make syrup. The wood is also used for the industry.

Tamarind-nimi liittyy myös Tamarind Instituuttiin New Mexicon yliopistossa. Tämä Instituutti on hyvin kuuluisa, ja se on rohkaissut taiteen tekemistä taidegrafiikan, erityisesti litografian keinoin. Tamarindin julkaisema litogafian käsikirja on maailmankuulu.

Tamarind is also the name of the Tamarind Institute at the University of New Mexico. Since 1960 this Institute is very famous and encouraging for the art of printmaking and special lithography. The Tamarind Handbook of lithography is world-famous.

Honourable Mention Tämä teos kuvaa merta Oostenden edustalla. Oostende on merenrantakaupunki Belgiassa. Olin siellä taiteilijaresidenssissä viikon ajan. Halusin piirtää, en pelkästään merta itseään vaan myös sitä, mikälainen muutosvoima ja vaikutus luonnolla on. Meri kaikessa voimassaan muistutti minua Fukushiman tsunamista. Maanjäristyksen jälkeen käsitys aalloista on muuttunut täysin. Nyt aallot muistuttavat japanilaisia katastrofista vaikka teos ei kuvaakkaan tsunamia. Aalto ei näyttäydy pelkästään kauniina tai dramaattisena kuvana vaan myös pelkona, voimana, luonnon mahtina.

This work is describing the sea in Oostende. Oostende is a seaside city in Belgium. I had an artist in residency in that city and stayed there for 1 week. I wanted to draw not only the sea itself but moreover the change and impact nature has. The sea with its power reminded me of the Tsunami in Fukushima. After the earthquake, the perception of waves has been changed completely. Now it reminds Japanese people of the disaster even if it is not related to the Tsunami. It shows us not only a beautiful or dramatic image but also fear, strongness, the power of nature.

Honourable Mention Työskentelen taidegrafiikan, piirtämisen ja maalamisen parissa, tässä järjestyksessä. Prosessin fyysinen vaihe on minulle erittäin tärkeä, kuten myös läsnäolo, haastavuus ja suhde taidon luonteen kanssa. Viime vuosina teosteni aihe olen ollut minä itse ja oma olemassaoloni. Teokseni eivät kuitenkaan ole sisäänpäinkääntyneitä tai vailla nykyaikaista kontekstia, päinvastoin; kaikki on suodatettu minun ja mielipiteiteni lävitse - ilman kompromissia.

I work with printmaking, drawing and painting, in that order. The physical part of the process is incredibly important to me, as is the presence, the challenge and the relationship with the nature of the craft. In later years the context of the work has been about myself and my own existence. Not that my work is introverted or without a contemporary context, quite the opposite; but everything is filtered through myself and my point of view – without compromise.

Selected Artists More than 2,000 works from 758 artists were electronically sent to the first phase of Miniprint Finland 2014 -triennal. For the second stage, 378 artists were asked to send their original works of which the jury chose 368 works from 138 artists from 34 countries for the exhibition. With emulsions it is possible to exposure photos to the mesh or stencils are used for more simple forms. The term silk-screen refers to the material of the mesh used before - silk. Nowadays the material used is in most cases polyester.

Viivasyövytys / etching 3 Viivasyövytys on taidegrafiikan syväpainomenetelmä, jossa haluttu kuva syövytetään hapon avulla painolaattaan. Kupari-, sinkki- tai teräslaatta päällystetään haponkestävällä pohjustusaineella. Haluttu kuva piirretään raaputtamalla sitä niistä kohdista, joihin viivojen halutaan syntyvän. Etching is a printmaking method where the plate is covered with acid resistant liquid. The picture is then scrathed to plate thus allowing the acid to corrode the lines. Aplied and cleaned printmaking ink stays in the furrows made by acid. The plate is printed with intaglio press.

Akvatinta / aquatint 3

Puupiirros on kohopainomenetelmä, jossa haluttu kuva kaiverretaan puulaatalle. Painoväri telataan koholle jääneisiin kohtiin jättäen kaiverretut kohdat valkoisiksi. Laatta vedostetaan joko käsin tai painoprässillä.

Akvatintassa painolaatan pinta peitetään hienojakeisella hartsipölyllä tai muulla haponkestävällä suojasumutteella. Sen jälkeen laatan haluttuja osia peitetään vaiheittain suojalakalla, ja syövytetään niin, että ne kohdat joihin halutaan tummimmat sävyt, ovat pisimpään syöpymässä hapossa. Woodcut is a relief printmaking technique where the picture is carved to a block of wood. Non-carved areas holds the aplied color while the carved are left white or empty. Kaiverrus (puu-, alumiini-, kupari-) / Engraving (wood, aluminium, copper) 2, 3 Kaiverruksessa haluttu kuva kaiverretaan yleensä kovaan ja tasaiseen laattaan. Lopputuloksena voi olla joko itsenäinen objekti tai laattaa voidaan käyttää vedostamisessa. In engraving the picture is engraved usually to hard and flat plate. The end product is the plate itself or prints made with the plate.

In aquatint technique the plate is covered with rosin powder or with other acid resistant spray. Lightest areas are covered with acid resistant stopper before putting the plate in acid. The darkest areas are the one with most time in acid. The plate is printed as in etching technique. Mezzotinto / mezzotint 3 Mezzotinnossa painolaatan pinta rouhitaan rakeiseksi kaarevalla rouhimella. Haluttu kuva syntyy tasoittamalla laatan karheutta siihen valmistetuilla työkaluilla. Mitä enemmän pintaa silotetaan, sitä vaaleampi sävy saadaan aikaan. Mezzotintolle on tyypillistä pehmeät sävypinnat ja -siirtymät. Mezzotint plate is roughed evenly by metal toll. The image is created by burnish areas with metal tools. Smoothened areas holds no color at all. Mezzotint is known for its tone qualities.

Offset litografia / off-set lithography 4

In drypoint technique the image is incised directly on the plate with a sharp diamond or metal point ”needle”. The depressions and burrs holds the applied ink. Printing is done on an intaglio press. Chine collé / Chine-Collé 1, 2, 3, 4 Chine collé-metelmässä vedos kiinnitetään vedostettaessa toiselle, yleensä kestävämmälle, väriltään poikkeavalle paperille. Tämä mahdollistaa vedostamisen huomattavasti herkemmille, läpikuultaville papereille. Chine-Collé technique allows printing to more sensitive and opaque papers. The print is bonded to heavier support paper which usually differs in color.

Offset litografiassa laattana käytetään kalkkikiven sijasta offset-peltiä. Haluttu kuva maalataan tai tulostetaan kalvolle, joka valotetaan valoherkälle laatalle. Vedostettaessa painoväri siirtyy valotuksen mukaisesti vedostuspaperille. Instead of limestone the off-set lithography uses light sensitive off-set plate. The picture is painted or printed to transparent film which is exposed to the plate. Printing method is similiar with stonelithography. Valotustekniikoita / photo-mechanical methods 3 Taidegrafiikan menetelmiin kuuluu myös muita valotustekniikoita. Näissä tekniikoissa hyödynnetään valoherkkää kalvoa tai emulsiota sekä UV-valoa. Yleisimpiä valotustekniikoita ovat: •

Fotoetsaus: laatalle levitetään UV-valolle herkkä emulsio ja laatta valotetaan negatiivin kanssa. UV-valolle altistuneet kohdat liukenevat lipeään. Menetelmällä saadaan täysin mustavalkoisia vedoksia. Filmioriginaalia voidaan rasteroida, ja/tai laattaa jatkokäsitellä akvatintamenetelmällä harmaasävyjen saavuttamiseksi.

Heliogravyyri: tekniikassa käytetään pigmenttipaperia, jonka pinnalla oleva gelatiinikerros herkistetään UV-valolle kemiallisesti ja valotetaan positiivifilmin kanssa. UV-valolle altistuneet kohdat kovettuvat. Valotettu gelatiinikalvo siirretään akvatintamenetelmällä pohjustetulle laatalle ja kehitetään lämpimällä vedellä, jolloin UV-valolta suojassa olleet kohdat liukenevat. Laatta syövytetään.

ImageOn: valoherkkä kalvo kiinnitetään laatalle ja valotetaan UV-valolla filmin ollessa tiiviisti laatan päällä. UV-valolle altistuneet kohdat kovettuvat ja valolta säästyneet liukenevat kidesoodaliuokseen. Laattaan muodostuu syventeitä, joihin painoväri vedostettaessa kerääntyy. Harmaasävyt syntyvät valottamalla laattaan erikseen pienistä pisteistä koostuva ns. rasterifilmi. ImageOn kalvo on fotopolymeerin

Monotypia / monotype 4 (1, 2, 3) Monotypia on painomenetelmä, jossa painoväri levitetään laatalle maalaamalla, telaamalla tai muilla halutuilla tavoilla. Laatta vedostetaan paperille käsin hiertämällä tai painoprässin avulla. Menetelmä tuottaa yhden uniikin vedoksen. Monotype is a technique in which the picture is painted or otherwise applied directly on the plate. Monotype can be printed both by printpress or by hand. Technique provides one unique print. Litografia / lithography 4 Litografiassa laattana käytetään tasaiseksi hiottua kiveä ja menetelmä perustuu veden ja rasvan hylkimiselle. Rasvaisella liidulla tai tussilla piirretty kuva mahdollistaa painovärin tarttumisen kostutetulle kivelle. Vedostamisessa käytetään litografiaprässiä. In lithography the image is drawn with oil, fat or wax onto a smooth stone plate. Instead of the moistened areas on the plate the color sticks to greasy areas made. Printing is

Polymeerigravyyri (fotopolymeeri): painolaattana käytetään valmista teollisuuden tarpeisiin kehitettyä valoherkällä aineella päälystettyä polymeerilaattaa. Laatta valotetaan kuten ImageOn-tekniikassa. Harmaasävyjen aikaansaamiseksi laatta valotetaan vielä rasterikalvon läpi. Rasterikalvon pienet pisteet toimivat akvatintan tapaan. Valottumattomat kohdat liukenevat veteen ja tuloksena on syväpainolaatta. Filminä voidaan käyttää positiivifilmiä tai kalvolle tehtyä piirrosta/maalausta.

Printmaking techniques include many different photomechanical methods. These techniques utilizes a lightsensitive film or an adhesive and UV light. The most common of these are: •

Photo etching: UV light-sensitive emulsion is applied onto a plate, which is then exposed to UV light with the negative. Those parts exposed to UV light will dissolve to caustic soda. This method gives a complitely black and white prints. The original film can be resterized, and/or the plate processed further with aquatint to achive shades of gray.

Photogravure: in this technique a carbon sheet that has a gelatine layer is chemically made UV light sensitive and then exposed to the light with a positive film. The areas exposed to the light are solified. Exposed gelatin is then tranferred onto a plate that has an aquatint treatment. The plate is developed in warm water and the areas covered from the UV light will dissolve. The plate is etched (corroded).

ImageOn: the UV light-sensitive sheet is attached onto a plate and exposed to UV light, the film original being tightly on the plate. The areas impervious to UV light will set and others dissolve to crystallized sodium solution. Depressions are formed onto the surface of the plate in whereto which the ink builds up when dumping. The gray shading is created by exposing the plate individually so-called composed of small dots. rasterifilmi. ImageOn film is one embodiment of the industrial photopolymer process.

Polymer gravyre: The plate is exposed as in ImageOn

technique. To achive the whole gray scale, the plate must be exposed also with raster film. The small dots of the raster will work similar as rosin powder in the aquatint method. Unexposed areas of the plate surface are dissolved in water and the end result is a intaglio plate. Positive film or drawing/painting on a transparent sheet can be used for the exposure of the plate.
