Research Research is a key part LAF’s strategy to increase our collective capacity to achieve sustainability through landscape architecture. Since 1986, LAF has invested over $2.1 million in research initiatives.

Landscape Performance Series The Landscape Performance Series (LPS) is an online interactive set of resources to evaluate performance, share best practices, and make the case for sustainable landscape solutions. This award-winning platform showcases evidence-based environmental, social, and economic benefits of landscape, sharing information and innovations from design research, academia, and professional practice. Awareness and use of the LPS has increased steadily, with 36,000 unique visitors and nearly 200,000 pageviews in 2013. LAF presented the LPS to 1,400 professionals at 50 venues and developed a half-day workshop on the process of evaluating performance to show impact. In March, LAF awarded $22,500 to researchers from Utah State, Kansas State and Temple Universities to catalog and analyze the metrics and methods in first 60 LPS Case Study Briefs and make recommendations to improve the rigor of future case studies. The product will

“The concept of landscape performance bridges the gap between allied professions. Everyone can understand the benefit and purpose of landscape architecture when we can talk about what the landscape actually does economically, socially, and – Landscape Performance Series User ecologically.” be a guidebook on metrics and methods for evaluating performance, expected in mid-2014. To accelerate the adoption of landscape performance in design education, LAF launched a two-year $25,000 teaching grant initiative, offering five $2,500 mini-grants to select university faculty for the Spring 2014. Participants will work with LAF to develop and test models for integrating landscape performance into standard landscape architecture course offerings.

The Landscape Performance Series is made possible with support from Founding Partner: JJR|Roy Fund; Annual Sponsors: AECOM, American Society of Landscape Architects, CLASS Fund/Ralph Hudson Environmental Fellowship, and AILA/Yamagami/Hope Fellowship; Education Grant Sponsor: ICPI Foundation for Education & Research 6  |  Landscape Architecture Foundation

Case Study Investigation (CSI) The Case Study Investigation (CSI) program is a unique research collaboration that matches LAF-funded faculty-student research teams with leading practitioners to document the benefits of exemplary high-performing landscape projects. Teams develop methods to quantify environmental, economic and social benefits and produce Case Study Briefs for LAF’s Landscape Performance Series. Nine faculty Research Fellows, 12 student Research Assistants, and over 20 design firm liaisons participated in the 2013 CSI program to evaluate and document the performance of 24 projects, from Detroit’s Milliken State Park to private residences in Aspen to the 1,000-acre Napa River Flood Protection Project. [See p. 7]

The CSI program is highly collaborative with the goal of better integrating the innovative work being done by academia and practice to advance our knowledge of landscape performance. The program also provides participants much-needed research and professional development opportunities. By investing in this research, LAF hopes that CSI can be a key impetus in moving the landscape architecture profession toward designing every project with specific performance objectives, routinely collecting performance data, and integrating landscape performance in design education.

“ Before CSI, we talked about how projects performed, but we didn’t use those words. We didn’t build a baseline of evidence. It was all anecdotal. Now, for every project we do, we have metrics on our radar screen.” — 2013 CSI Firm Liasion “ I feel like I am a step ahead of most students entering the work force because of the critical thinking skills I have developed through CSI.” – 2013 CSI Research Assistant

Leadership Since its founding in 1966 by leading landscape architects of the day, LAF has worked to strengthen the profession and collaborate with leaders in practice, academia, and industry to provide thought leadership in designing sustainable landscape solutions. LAF also supports the development of emerging student leaders and young professionals.

XTreme LA XTreme LA is a creative challenge for the design leaders of tomorrow. This unique professional development program teams select young professionals and students with prominent landscape architects for an intense two-day charrette, in which participants develop design solutions for a significant local or regional challenge in a host city. The fifth XTreme LA Challenge was the most critical and complex to date. Held on April 3, 2013 at the University of California, Berkeley, participants were asked to develop design strategies and responses to address the impacts of projected sea level rise in the San Francisco Bay area around Berkeley Pier. Thirteen young professionals, who were identified by their firms as rising leaders, came from around the country to work with 15 students from the UC Berkeley graduate

program in landscape architecture under two distinguished team leaders: Kevin Conger, President and CEO of CMG Landscape Architecture, and Brian Jencek, Managing & Design Principal at Hargreaves Associates San Francisco. The two teams worked together to create a common kit of parts, then divided to develop two radically different proposals: “Soft and Safe” and “Pierscape.” Presentation of these approaches spurred lively conversation among the policy-makers, designers, and scientists in attendance. Xtreme LA was developed by Landscape Forms and is co-sponsored by LAF. In addition to fostering critical thinking, team building, and creative expression, the program provides a unique opportunity for intergenerational professional development.
