REDI is the Rotarian Emergency Disaster Initiative.

Launched in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by the three Rotary Directors of the paired zones along the gulf coast, REDI has become a source of disaster awareness for Rotarians, Rotary Clubs, Zones, and Districts. Don Mebus, Barry Rassin and Bob Stuart convened the North American-Rotary Emergency Disaster Initiative “REDI” to discuss what had been learned and help the zones be prepared for any future disaster.

Since that time, REDI’s scope has broadened to include the Caribbean and South America. This new scope triggered a name change in 2010 to Rotarian Emergency Disaster Initiative.

REDI is not a part of Rotary International; rather it is an initiative by Rotarians for Rotarians.

REDI's Mission is to train Rotarians to be prepared when disaster strikes. REDI does not provide disaster response, but is dedicated to training and preparation.

Once designated as a well-kept secret of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal can be enjoyed in all its splendor and tranquility.

Even in the busiest resorts in the Algarve, it only takes a short bus ride or a walk in the countryside to enjoy the rarely visited places that still offer the feeling of discovery – a sense close to the Portuguese soul.

Portugal offers an old-fashioned charm, with medieval castles and villages scattered along the coastline and on slopes covered with flowers.

From the famous university city of Coimbra, to the favorite haunt of the poet Lord Byron – Sintra – you may feel the wonderful and proud history of Portugal.

The beautiful Portuguese beaches like Cascais and Sagres offer the most various attractions. Indeed, our pristine beaches with their dunes, its hillsides with stunning views to the sea and the islands of sandy coastline have long enchanted visitors from all over as well as its locals.

Meanwhile, the capital of Portugal – Lisbon – and its northern rival – Oporto – are magical places to visit, with splendid views over its rivers, Portuguese cobblestone streets, typical Trams, this all framed by beautiful cathedrals.

ROTARY CLUB OF ST. THOMAS …submitted by Karen John

On December 20, 2012, the Rotary Club of St. Thomas distributed Christmas presents to the St. Thomas Boys and Girls Club, to children ages 5 – 17.

There were 70 gifts passed out. There was also a raffle for three bikes. The kids had a ball!  

Santa Claus was there in person (Paul Davis), handing out the gifts.

Jackie Brown the head of the Club also cooked a Christmas lunch for all in attendance.

These gifts were donated by members of Rotary Club of St. Thomas and Guardian Insurance Company. The smiles on the faces of the children make contributions like these so worthwhile.

VISITING ROTARIANS (for a day) HELP WITH A PROJECT What a great idea!

Nana Baby Home, St. Thomas Thanks to the organizational contact with International Capital Management and Karen Hughes, and with the help of Rotarian John Foster, the Nana Baby Home hosted ten people from the Venture of the Seas cruise ship on January 21 2013, who wanted to volunteer to do a community project while their ship was in St.Thomas for the day.

They all arrived by taxi van driven by George Sebastian at 10:15a.m. With the help of Anna Paiewonsky and Bernie Roy of the Rotary Club of St. Thomas (Bernie supplied all the liquid refreshments and Anna supplied painting instructions), we were able to complete the painting of the gate and roadside entry to the Nana Baby Home.

The crew then went on a conducted tour of the Home with Rita ad Beulah, meeting the children under our care. Finally they presented Beulah with a check for $250.00 as their collective donation to the home.

Recently, the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten-Mid Isle hosted some 20 Rotarians and spouses from the Rotary Club of Santiago Monumental, which is based in the Dominican Republic. The Santiago Rotarians were on a cruise passing through St Maarten and wanted to meet some Rotarians from St Maarten.

During the meeting which took place at Taloula’s Mango, the president of the Santiago Monumental Rotary Club Roberto Almonte thanked the Mid-Isle Club for their hospitality, and offered to help or work together on some projects. Present from Rotary Mid-Isle were President Jon Hart, Past Assistant Governor Louis Wever and members Ramesh Manek, Sanjay Surtani, Hose Booi, Peter Mazereeuw and Tony da Cunha. Also joining the fellowship were members of the Rotary Club of Sint Maarten, Fred van der Peijl and Nick Hemrajani. The Rotarians from both clubs exchanged some ideas and projects, and got to know each other, and hope that this short meeting bears fruit in the future in the form of a joint project which can benefit both communities.

ROTARY CLUB OF LIGUANEA PLAINS ‌submitted by Carolyn Graham

WALKS FOR CHARITY What better way to start the year? Giving service, while contributing to one's health and promoting Rotary and RCLP, all at once, in an atmosphere of love and peace which included the entire family. The photos show the excellent turnout!

These objectives drove RCLP's fourth staging of its annual 5K Run/Walk held on Sunday, January 13, 2013. This was a proud day to be a Rotarian. On this day, the Rotary Club of Liguanea Plains was staging its fourth annual, and largest so far, 5k run/walk. Over 700 participants registered to run or walk!

The event firstly served two very important purposes. The walk is RCLP’s signature fundraising event to fund its community service projects as well as for Rotary awareness. This year, most of the proceeds will go to the refurbishing and purchase of equipment for the dental clinic at the National Chest Hospital which is currently non-operational due to the level of disrepair and no equipment.

Additionally however, the event provided a fun filled way for families both Rotary and in the wider community, to fellowship, learn about Rotary and the work of RCLP, while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

The event was aptly held at the salubrious Hope Botanical Gardens, supported by the Tea House restaurant on location.

ST. MAARTEN MID-ISLE PROMOTES LITERACY THROUGH ESSAY COMPETITION

Photo of the Seventh Day Adventist School where an iPad was presented to the winner of the Rotary/Rotaract Seven Seas Haliborange Essay Competition. The winning essay now goes forward to the regional competition held between the Caribbean islands, and the winner will get a paid vacation for 4 to Orlando and Disney World.

ROTARY CLUB SUNRISE OF ROAD TOWN …submitted by Ken Guiste

Wheelchair Donation Geoffrey Kennedy was 19 years old and lived with his parents at their Frenchman’s Cay Hotel in West End, Tortola. Whilst on a trip to St. Thomas,USVI, he was involved in a shooting incident and consequently became a paraplegic.

Over the last 14 years, Geoff has strived to achieve monumental accolades in sporting activities including “Iron Man” competitions internationally.

Recently Geoff contacted Sunrise Rotarian Colin Bramble and offered this wheel chair to a good home in BVI. It had been donated to him by Achilles International and was surplus to his immediate requirements.

After consultation with Ms. Lorna Dawson, Rotary Sunrise chose the recently opened BVI Autism Centre as being the most worthy recipient. The chair will be put to good use by several of the regular patients receiving therapy at the centre.

Rotary Awareness Month (January 2013) Leadership and Peace through Cultural Diversity

RYLA CONFERENCE

Rotary Clubs of St. Martin/Sint Maarten …submitted by Maria Buncamper-Molanus

The Four Rotary Clubs on St. Maarten/Saint Martin are planning one of the largest Youth conferences St. Maarten has hosted for the second time called RYLA. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is Rotary's leadership training program for young people.

RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but most clubs and districts choose to focus on a narrower age range, such as 14-18 or 19-30.

Above right - Milton Peters College Interact Club RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for the youth, provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders, encourage leadership of youth by youth and recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.

The St Maarten/St Martin hosted RYLA will take place February 14-17, 2013.

The conference will target persons between the ages 14-17 years old from 10 countries in the Caribbean. In addition to Intercators from St. Maarten and Saint Martin, participants are expected to come from Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts & Nevis, Us Virgin Islands, Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Island, Turks & Caicos and Anguilla.

Between 70 and 200 participants are expected to attend the conference and preparations are in full swing.

Interactors on St. Maarten/Saint Martin are making their preparations for the Valentine’s weekend during which the 3 day conference will be held. The conference is being made possible through the generosity of sponsors such as CIBC, Nagico, Sol and Russell Bell Transportation.

In addition to being fun filled and an opportunity to make new friends, the young leaders will be brushing up on their leadership skills such as listening and feedback. Effective public speaking, conflict resolution, dealing with bullying in an assertive but non aggressive way and much more are on the agenda.

But it’s not only the leadership skills that will be polished. Also team-building, culture and challenge exercises as well as community services projects are part of this grand event. The evenings are filled with more relaxing yet exiting activities which will put vocal cords and dancing skills to the test.

Rotary Club of Trafalgar, New Heights Pushes to Increase National Blood Supplies… … Partners with Calvary Gospel Assembly Church for Annual Blood Drive On Saturday, December 15, the Rotary Club of Trafalgar, New Heights (RCTNH) renwed its annual push to increase national blood supplies. This year’s Blood Drive was undertaken in partnership with the Calvary Gospel Assembly Church. It was scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. The Blood Drive took place at the Calvary Prep School on the church grounds (129 Sundown Crescent, Kingston 10).

Saturday’s Blood Drive was the RCTNH’s fourth attempt to raise national awareness of the need to give blood. The project seeks to add to the National Blood Transfusion Service’ (Blood Bank) supplies of the precious liquid.

Blood donors were asked to bear the following tips in mind before making their deposits on Saturday:       

Females especially should take iron supplements Eat dark leafy greens Get a good night’s rest nights Drink lots of nutritious fluid; Have a meal at least half an hour up to three hours prior to making donation Bring TRN/Driver’s License Take a friend who did not sign up, originally

The Rotary Club of Trafalgar, New Heights (RCTNH) is unique. Chartered in 2008, it was the first “New Generation” Rotary club in Jamaica which brought together young, mid-level professionals who share a common contemporary vision of energetic and innovative Rotary service to the community. RCTNH celebrates four years of service to Jamaica this year.

THE INTERACT CORNER T he Interact Club of Hugh Boyd Secondary School in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, is the grand-prize winner of the 2012 Interact video contest with its entry, Students Making a Difference.

The 80-member Interact club chose the theme, “Five ways my Interact club makes the world a better place.” The video tells the story of how club members collaborated on projects that made a positive impact both locally and internationally.

“When writing the script, our Interact club really wanted to emphasize the power of numbers,” says club president Shaane Nathu.

“The idea we wanted to convey is that an initiative can start with just one person and grow from there. This concept makes our hopes and dreams to make a difference a reality. We may be just students, but we can have an impact on our society.”

Nathu says it took about two weeks to produce the video, which highlights five projects that his Interact club took part in with its sponsor, the Rotary Club of Richmond Sunset.

Rotarian Magdalen Leung, a sponsor of the Interact club, says she knew the students had a good chance of winning the contest.

“Our Rotary club encouraged the Interactors to enter this competition because we have seen how committed and energized they are in every project they participate in.

We realized their successes would make a great story,” says Leung. “The recognition of their outstanding work will help other young people participate in the work of Rotary.”

Says Nathu: “The best part of making the video was all of us coming together and working as a team. We understood how much of an impact this video could potentially have on other Interactors.”

The Hugh Boyd club will receive a letter from RI President Sakuji Tanaka and an engraved plaque. And its video will be featured for a year on RI’s Official Interact Video Contest YouTube page. (http://www.youtube.com/interactofficial)

The first Rotaract club was chartered on 13 March 1968 in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.

Before the first Rotaract club was chartered, many Rotary clubs had been creating unofficial clubs for young adults, which helped fuel Rotaract’s initial rapid growth. A year after the first club was established, 289 clubs had formed.

There are now more than 7,400 Rotaract clubs in about 162 countries and geographical areas.

India has the most Rotaract clubs in the world (1,800), followed by Brazil (615), the United States (559), the Philippines (492), and Italy (397).

World Rotaract Week is celebrated during the week of 13 March each year, commemorating the date when Rotary International officially certified the first Rotaract club.

The goals of Rotaract include developing professional and leadership skills, emphasizing respect for the rights of others, providing opportunities for young people to address the needs of the community and world, and working in cooperation with sponsor Rotary clubs.

In 1989, more than 450 Rotaractors from around the world gathered in Seoul, Korea, to participate in the first Rotaract Preconvention Meeting. This annual two-day event, which takes place immediately before the RI Convention, brings together Rotaractors and interested Rotarians to discuss a wide range of topics related to Rotaract.

ROTARY CLUB OF NEGRIL The 8th Annual Negril Rotary Donkey Races will be held on Sunday February 10th at WAVZ on Negril beach.

The family fun day features 18 donkeys, all dressed up for the races in imaginative costumes, and is set in a buzzing fairground atmosphere with high excitement, kids rides, game booths, and free face painting.

A Jamaican bar and many food stalls offering Jamaican and International choices are priced to please the crowd.

Fabulous gate prizes are announced every half-hour including complimentary dinners, tickets to various Island attractions as well as weekends for two at fabulous resorts around the Island.

The Grand Gate Prize of an HP, fully loaded laptop computer has been donated for the lucky winner.

100% of funds raised goes toward youth education and community programmes. Last year’s proceeds helped 50 local children to attend school regularly, helped to provide a brand new community school bus, provided 10 young men with lifeguard training & accreditation and helped to provide a summer camp for 80 children here in Negril.

Gates open at 10am and the races begin at noon. Admission is only $200 for children under 12, and $500 for Adults.
