VCNP

The Valles Caldera supervolcano erupted 1.2 million years ago and has been home to awe-inspiring views and adventures ever since. Located just 14 miles west of Los Alamos, the scenic 30-minute drive through the Santa Fe National Forest opens unexpectedly onto the Valle Grande (big valley) section of the Preserve. The second largest elk herd in the state calls the 89,000-acre Preserve home and is frequently seen in the Valle Grande.

Winter Caldera

Bike or hike along one of the 54 miles of trails, pausing to photograph a spectacular view or allow some elk traffic to cross. Angle along 30 miles of trout streams where the quiet beauty of the caldera will be a constant fishing companion.

VCNP

Take in the sights, sounds and history of the Preserve from the comfort of a van tour that explores the landscape. During the winter months, vans give way to sleigh rides where you can watch visitors snowshoe and cross-country ski across the snow covered Valle Grande.

Leslie Bucklin

Outside Fuller Lodge stand life-size bronze statues of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie R. Groves, the leaders of the Manhattan Project who worked in an unusual partnership to develop and test the world’s first atomic weapons, bringing an abrupt end to World War II.

Manhattan Project National Historical Park Coming Soon! With the passing of the National Defense Authorization Act in January 2015, Los Alamos is now the designated hub for three national parks: Bandelier National Monument (page 1), the Valles Caldera National Preserve (page 6), and the new Manhattan Project National Historical Park. The park will be one of the few national parks that focuses on American science, technology and industry during World War II. Three non-contiguous sites across the country will feature the structures associated with the research and production of the atomic bomb: Oak Ridge, TN (uranium enrichment); Hanford, WA (plutonium production); and Los Alamos, NM (atomic bomb design and testing). In addition to the science, the park sites will interpret the social and cultural life of the individuals and families that lived and worked in these “secret cities.”

Los Alamos National Laboratory

Stop by the Los Alamos Historical Museum and learn about the places that will be featured in the new park, including those you can visit today.

Interactive exhibits at the Bradbury Science Museum demonstrate the commitment to innovation that began with the Manhattan Project.
