Winter 2015

REGENERATION FOR CHARLEMONT The long awaited redevelopment of the City Council flats complex at Charlemont is due to start shortly. The contractor is expected to start on site in December. Up to 150 new social housing units will be delivered to replace the old Tom Kelly flats as part of a mixed development on the 5 acre site. The initial development will comprise 79 apartments and a community centre as part of the land swap deal. The Charlemont Regeneration is the only public private regeneration partnership to survive the recession. A total of over 250 apartments will be built on the overall site over 5 blocks, and the initial 79 social housing units will be built first.

First Block will include 79 new homes & Sports Hall

GRAND CANAL CYCLEWAY UPDATE

NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL FOR SOUTH CITY AREA

There are plans to extend the Grand Canal cycleway from Portobello to the Blackhorse Inn in Inchicore. Detailed design and assessment works are being compiled. The key link in Portobello will be from Richmond St along the Canal bank onto Portobello Road, Windsor Terrace and Clanbrassil St. The exact details of the design will be made clear when the Council seeks Part 8 planning permission and the public will be able to make observations.

The School Building Programme, just announced, shows that there will be a need for a new public secondary school in the south city area, to open in 2018 and take up to 1000 students. There will be a patron selection process and a site will have to be secured. However, this provides the potential for a much needed, free, non-denominational secondary school to serve the needs of local families.

NEW SCHOOL FOR GRIFFITH BARRACKS A new school will be built for Griffith Barracks Multidenominational National School. There will be 16 classrooms over 3 stories. The OPW is handling the project. Tenders for the construction work are currently being assessed. Funding is secured. Once building work is underway, the school will move to temporary accommodation on a site at Cólaiste Phiarsaigh, Clogher Road, Dublin 12.

DESIGN COMPETITION FOR HARCOURT TERRACE SCHOOL

As you may know the closed Garda Station and Film Censor Office on Harcourt Terrace were secured for public use by my colleague Ruairi Quinn when he was Minister for Education. This site will be redeveloped into a new 24 classroom primary school with a special needs unit, to open in 2018. An architectural design competition was recently held by the RIAI and won by Tún architecture + design. Following that, building work will get underway, and a patron selection process will be held. The pictures show the proposed new school entrance and general purpose hall.

KEVIN ST GARDA STATION

Building work continues on the new Kevin Street Divisional Headquarters for An Garda Síochána. The €27.5 million project is due to open in 2017. There has been a police presence on this corner for over 200 years with the first HQ of the Dublin Metropolitan Police located in the current Garda station also known as the ‘Palace of St Sepulchre’. For 600 years before that it was the official residence for the Archbishops of Dublin. I support the restoration of this historic building for cultural or other public use.
