Interview with…

Simon Sheridan

Simon Sheridan is well known for his knowledge on all things to do with cinema, cheerful child nostalgia and pop music. Simon has written many critically acclaimed books over the years and is best known for writing ‘The Complete Kylie’. We talk to Simon about Kylie and the success of his book Hello Simon, Can you give us a little background on you and some of your earlier work? I started my career working in newspapers, but about 15 years ago I decided I wanted to break free and become a freelance writer. It was quite a daunting prospect, but I’ve had quite a varied career so far – writing about television shows, movies, music and all aspects of entertainment. I particularly love writing about the 1970s and 1980s! Now for those who don’t know, you wrote the critically acclaimed Kylie biography entitled ‘The Complete Kylie’. Can you tell us what sparked the idea to write a biography about Kylie?

wanted to take the plunge. So I went back to my publishers and suggested I do a book on Kylie instead. They agreed immediately, and that’s how The Complete Kylie came about. It was definitely the right decision, as the book has now gone to three editions. The most recent came out earlier this year. I’ve always loved Kylie’s music and she’s a fascinating performer too

In about 2007 I was invited to write a biography on Madonna. Are you a fan of Kylie? I thought about it for some time, but wasn’t entirely sure if I I bought ‘I Should Be So Lucky’

on 7” vinyl all those years ago, and it would be true to say that I’ve liked Kylie ever since she was in Neighbours! That show was so big in the 1980s when I was growing up. My friends and I would rush home from school to watch it. It’s hard to comprehend just how popular it was back then, but it used to get viewing figures of something like 16 million per episode, which is unheard of today. I remember watching the iconic ‘wedding episode’ when Scott married Charlene and the newspapers

were reporting that 23 million people saw it. That’s more than the entire population of Australia! So yes, Kylie was a big part of my youth. Fans have always commented on the accuracy of the information in your books. How do you ensure that all the information is as accurate as possible? I’ve tried to be as accurate as possible in The Complete Kylie. I double-check as much as I can by going back and reviewing old newspaper stories and Kylie interviews, plus I spoke to a lot of people who’ve worked with her over the years. Also, Terry Blamey, Kylie’s manager was extremely helpful and supportive.

that. I deliberately wanted to avoid the usual tabloid obsessions about Kylie’s personal life – you know her bum (!), the Michael Hutchence stuff and her courageous battle with cancer. Obviously I’ve mentioned those things in my book, but The Complete Kylie is primarily about her career achievements. I wanted the book to be like a CV of absolutely everything she’s done in her professional life. A review by The Sunday Express said; “A showstopper! Simon Sheridan charts Kylie’s inexorable rise from fresh-faced teenager to accomplished showgirl.” As an author how would you describe the praise the books have received? I’ve had some very nice comments about the book over the years, and I know Kylie has seen it and approves. I just hope I can continue to update it over the coming years. 2012 has been an especially big year for her as she’s celebrated her 25 years in music, so there’s plenty of new stuff to go in the next edition. In fact, I can’t wait for that!

Following on from the previous question, many biographies tend to focus more on the personal aspects of a celebrity’s life whereas ‘The Complete Kylie’ looks more at the discography. Would you say that, up until this point, that there has been a gap in the market for these types of books? It is also worth noting that you have also written an updated I wanted my book to be totally version of your ABBA biography different from the other entitled ‘The Complete ABBA’ unauthorised Kylie books out which is a very similar title to there. The Complete Kylie is ‘The Complete Kylie’. Are there really about her career. People any plans to release any more forget just how successful books under ‘The Complete’ Kylie has been – from a child name? actress to a multi-million selling recording artiste. She’s I’ve written a Complete ABBA been selling records for 25 book too, which is in a similar years, and so few other artists vein to my Kylie book, but Kylie is can boast by far my favourite. Perhaps one

day I’ll get round to writing a Madonna book! I’ve a few other ideas too, but they will have to remain secret for the time being! We would like to extend our deepest thanks to Simon for taking time out to talk to us about his book. Simon’s updated version of ‘The Complete Kylie’ is out now and can be purchased from all good bookstores

6 With the release of her new album ‘The Abbey Road Sessions’ we take a look at Kylie’s compilation of re-mastered hits and at what made 2012 the perfect time to release an album like no other Over the years Kylie has had many hits and even became the first solo artist in the history of the UK charts to have four No. 1 albums spanning four decades but 2012 saw Kylie back with a new album unlike any before. ‘The Abbey Road Sessions’ is an album that sees old classics reinterpreted with whimsical vocals and melodies and, it’s only too clear from the outset that Kylie’s voice is well and truly the best it has ever been. The album launches straight into ‘All the Lovers’ and almost immediately you feel as if you have been invited to your own private showing with Kylie and her accompanying orchestra. ‘All the Lovers’, although reworked, still references its original version perfectly and is a perfect three and a half minute preview as to what to expect from the album. Beginning with a gentle guitar strum the chorus blossoms into a big swooping orchestral violin section with the beautifully crystal clear but powerful voice of Kylie cutting straight

through, however at no point does there ever seem to be a clash of sounds between the orchestra and Kylie.

‘Honest’ and ‘True’ It only seems right for ‘On a Night Like This’ to follow and here we get the first taste of some of the backing vocals which feature on many of the songs. Unlike many of Kylie’s previous albums “The Abbey Road Sessions” features four backing singers giving each song more depth and individuality as well as making the album by far one of the most live show orientated albums Kylie has ever produced. One thing that shines throughout the album

is how pure Kylie’s voice is. One reason for this is the much welcomed lack of reverb which makes the Abbey Road Sessions one of the most ‘honest’ and ‘true’ albums released this past decade. One song that has been getting a lot of attention from fans is “Never Too Late” and it’s no surprise. With unprecedented vocals and the simple use of a piano the legendary acoustics of Abbey Road Studios creates emphasis on the devastating lyrics and create a sense of depth which draws you into the song. Although being very different to the original, for the first time, ‘Never Too Late’ appears to have become a more emotional song demonstrating its timeless nature.

7 ‘Hand on Your Heart’ is another song which has received similar rave reviews from fans and has even been considered by some to be a “cover of a cover” in reference to the cover version of the song performed by José Gonzalez. This new rendition of the song is a stark contrast from the bubblegum pop Kylie we were first introduced to in 1988.

Fans have been divided Moving on from Kylie’s earlier hits to some of her more recent we come to ‘Come into My World’. Over the years fans have been divided over the original and it seems that once again fans are still divided; however, it does seem that more people are warming to the new version. With a stripped back production featuring a lone piano, the song sounds completely different to the original; and just how can you resist those beautifully bone chilling “Na na’s”? Also falling into a similar category is ‘Slow’ only this time ‘Slow’, which is a song that was deemed by so many as one of Kylie’s most sensual songs, has become even sexier. With the tempo slowed right down there appears to be added emphasis on each word and with the addition of a sound that can only be described as sounding like a ‘whale song’ the whole song just oozes sex.

‘Flower’ is the only new song to feature on the album and was chosen as the lead single. First debuted as a ballad during Kylie’s ‘KylieX2008’ world tour the new ‘Abbey Road Sessions’ reinterpretation does not stray far from it’s original.

It’s the little song that could ‘Flower’ itself is about Kylie’s desire to have children and the use of a piano and strings based backing track makes it one of the most emotional tracks on the entire album. Kylie most notably said about the song “It’s the little song that could”. Many have said that the song ‘I Believe in You’ has not changed much from the original but we are inclined to disagree and believe the song is sometimes misconceived.

The new interpretation unlike the original becomes a quiet but very sensual song being completely stripped of its original electro edge and could be even compared with that of a lullaby. The song ‘Finer Feelings’, always took the stance of “What you can do, I can do better” and this message could not be portrayed any better in any other version than that of the ‘Abbey Road Sessions’. The song looses its original twinkly and slightly tinny sound and becomes a powerful dramatic combination of strings and percussion. It is well and truly Kylie and the orchestra working as one. Moving on from the quieter songs we come on to a 60’s inspired re-make of ‘The Locomotion’; the song that started it all, ‘The Locomotion’ is one of the most nostalgic songs on the entire album

8 however it is also a bit of a dark horse in that it is the only high tempo, fun and bubbly type of song on the whole album but even that has its advantages becoming a bit of a three minute respite. The fun does not last long before a powerful, violin based rendition of ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ takes over and greets you with one of the best renditions of the song to be produced. Creating a version of a song that was a huge hit in its original form is no mean feat but Kylie seems to never be phased by any challenge that comes her way and it’s this determination to succeed and better previous attempts that puts this version on par with the original. Now would be a good time to mention the amazingly dark and seductive ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’, and much to the surprise of fans the song, which is the only duet on the whole album, features the re-recorded vocals of Nick Cave who agreed to join Kylie at Abbey Road Studios. Backed with nothing more than a gentle but dark and mysterious reinterpretation of the music used in the original version it is clear that not only does Kylie sound so crisp and clear during the song, but so does Nick, and his return is just perfect for the album. Also receiving similar treatment is ‘Confide in Me’. For the last 18 years the song has been reinvented again and again and it seems that regardless of

what’s done to it, it cannot be ruined only improved. The Abbey Road version once again demonstrates this. One of the most defining features of the song is the eerily seductive whisper of “Stick or twist the choice is yours, hit or miss what’s mine is yours”. Coming to the end of the album we meet an entirely different take on the song ‘I Should Be So Lucky’. The song is nothing like it’s original and has become more of a monologue with ones self, becoming almost the cry of a hopeless lover. A similar sentiment is echoed in ‘Better the Devil You Know’ which again takes on a persona all of its own hinting at how Kylie wishes she can be shown the way and ultimately be set free. The penultimate song on the album, ‘Love at First Sight’, although keeping its original happy-golucky persona, has also had a new lease of life breathed into it with it becoming much simpler than its original counterpart. This is mainly due to the reduced tempo of the song and the stripped back music featuring an acoustic guitar giving it an almost folk song appeal which allows Kylie to experiment with her voice more. It’s clear already that the consensus is that the album is one of the most sympathetically executed albums Kylie has released this past decade and is one of, if not the best release to come out of K25. This is the kind of album many artists

would dream of being able to do and for each person each individual song has a very special and unique meaning to them. This album is a masterpiece and there is nothing quite like being able to sit back and bask in its unadulterated bliss. With its calming nature and pure vocals ‘The Abbey Road Sessions’ is an album packed with 16 reinterpreted songs all worthy of their places; it is clear that this is an album that Kylie and creative director Steve Anderson have both enjoyed producing, but have also been wanting to produce for a very long time.

The cherry on the top of the cake that is K25 K25 was the perfect time for Kylie to experiment with something new and different. This is most certainly an album to be proud of being by far one of the best and most pure albums of 2012. ‘Abbey Road Sessions’ is the cherry on the top of the cake that is K25 and what better way to end the year than by revisiting the hits that helped make Kylie into the international star she is today. Kylie’s confidence 2012 is a very special year for you! How are you celebrating? After 25 years in the music industry I really wanted to celebrate and to thank my fans for all their loyalty and support. K25 means so much to me and so far it’s been a year full of surprises and there will be a lot more coming up! As part of this special anniversary, I wanted to create a special fragrance for my fans to mark this event, which is how I came up with Music Box.

You have recorded some of your iconic songs this year at Abbey Road in a very classical, acoustic way. Did this new turn in music inspire you to create Music Box? Music is always an inspiration to me so this fragrance is a beautiful way to represent this. Recording my hits in a new way at Abbey Road was such a rewarding experience. I hope fans will love these fresh interpretations. Music Box is a new twist on a classic, just like these recordings. And like the recordings, I want it to bring beautiful memories and conjure up delicious dreams.

The bottle shape of Music Box is really fun and never seen before! Where do you find all your inspiration? I remember having a music box as a little girl and I was completely entranced by its magical quality. I was just really inspired by the way it used to make me feel. It was like a box of promise.

For which kind of woman did you create Music Box? Music Box is for women like me. Women who like to dream, to dare and to feel feminine

10

In 25 years of songs and music, is there one song that stands out above the rest and of which you are particularly proud and fond of? It’s impossible to choose one favourite song. They all represent different times and emotions in my life. I am always asked this question and am never able to give the answer. It becomes even more difficult having just recorded new interpretations of many of them. It’s like breathing a new life into them or dressing them in new clothes. Their essence is the same but their presentation makes me appreciate them in a new way.

K25 also represents 25 years of your now famously exciting shows and dazzling costumes, as well as many years of working with William Baker who also photographed on the Music Box print ad. What was you inspiration behind this ad? Our inspiration was glamour, elegance and fun. Instead of the classic ballerina, our Music Box girl is a modern twist on a classic look, cabaret.

What was it like working with William on the shoot? We always have fun shooting, even when it’s difficult or challenging. We love that. And we were so excited to bring this campaign to life.

25 years in music is a huge milestone. What’s your secret to such a long lasting career and the fact that your music remained so popular? I can’t tell you the secret as I don’t know it! But I do know that I’ve learnt so many lessons along the way and I continue to learn aspects of my craft all the time. I still feel inspired and challenged and that is what keeps me going.

Retrospective:

Please Stay ‌.12 Years on

12

Please Stay was released on the 11th December 2000 and was one of the last singles from Kylie’s comeback album ‘Light Years’. Despite being overshadowed by the single ‘Your Disco Needs You’, which had been protested for release worldwide, it still managed to reach #10 on the UK Charts and #15 on the Australian Charts. Please Stay is a breezy, summery tune, which, when released came with 2 b-side tracks; ‘Good Life’ and ‘Santa Baby’, the latter being released as a promo to UK radio stations to aid sales of the single during the Christmas period. The music video was shot by James Frost and Alex Smith and features Kylie in a variety of different scenes from her in a car to her lying awake on a bed before proceeding to dance to the chorus. It also features Kylie sliding down a fireman’s pole and dancing on a pool table 12 Years on from the release and Please Stay is still popular amongst many fans. With 9 official remixes, various fan mixes and a spate of live performances the song has undergone numerous changes but has stood the test of time.

MINOGUESCOPE

Red Blooded Woman (21st March – 20th April) LOVE: You can be the one hoping for better things this year, because whatever you’re romantic status, the last few years has probably had its fair share of bumps in the road. You, too, may have put down a marker and that is that you don’t want to accept second best. If a relationship seems touch and go as you read this, try to be philosophical, for instance, have you been demanding everything on your own terms? If so try to use this year to examine your values to intimacy, sharing and generosity. HEALTH: The big thing you will notice this year is that you are much less affected by the attitudes of others. You will find yourself to be more philosophical about all sorts of things. So, whether it’s the stresses and strains at work, a grumpy boss or a partner who is less ‘tuned in’ for you if changes are needed, you are going to be more accepting. Although your energy may lower for the first quarter of the year by the end of that quarter you should start to get moving once more.

Better The Devil You Know (21st April – 21st May) LOVE: The next two years are going to be very important for you romantically. This is going to ask a lot of questions of you, and see some other people ask some questions of you too. With your feelings close to the surface, this is a great time for making bold moves at work, but less helpful if you want a relationship to be all on your terms. If you do tend to be a bit bossy, try to guard against this. HEALTH: Pacing yourself is the key. If you are finding life uncomfortable the temptation may be to go on yo-yo diets, when a more consistent approach would work better. The good news is that this will not last long and at the end of the first quarter of the year you can start to think more positively about your self-image. However, your willpower could be tested again when your natural sweet tooth, looks to be born again.

Timebomb (22nd May – 21st June) LOVE: You can start the New Year in an adventurous mood, it could be someone you encounter in a very practical environment who can register on your senses. If you are loved-up a very steamy clinch is possible, however work pressures and low energy may have a role to play. Early on in the year could see a big attraction, perhaps with a friend, or triggered by one playing Cupid. The last months of the year could see you add weight and look at the downside but if you seize the chance something could get very interesting indeed, and quite intense. The end of the year could also be the time of the year which rocks, so accept all invites! HEALTH: Look to raise your game at every single level. That means thinking about what you put into your body, making time for proper meals, making them yourself if possible, drinking less, exercising more, and in general being a whole lot more organised about your life, because if you are not, this is where the rub will come. Work strains can also predominate this year but your gift for communication is undoubted. Keeping trim on the scales is once more going to require selfdiscipline.

16

Spinning Around (22nd June – 23rd July) LOVE: If your partner is not happy, or you are not settled, you may have to roll up your proverbial sleeves to get through it, and it may not be a joyous process, at least at times. Early on in the year is an important time for needing to be able to balance the needs of your friends, aspirations and social activities, with what you want from your most intimate relationship. Mid way though the year you may start to feel much bolder, and this may see you taking the initiative to reach out to someone you like, or to inject an existing bond with more daring. HEALTH: You can begin 2013 full of positive intentions, and why not? It's possible that there are some tests heading in your direction. The more you can stretch, walk, and swim, the more your body will thrive on just the right amount of exercise. You may even find yourself enjoying some team sports

The Locomotion (24th July – 23rd August) LOVE: This could turn out to be quite an exciting year for your love life, but it may not turn out as you expect. This could be the year when you find yourself becoming bored with the same old patterns and even cheerful chat up lines can lose their sparkle as you yearn for something deeper and more meaningful. HEALTH: If you are a fantastic natural athlete, and work out regularly, then all’s well and good but what about if you like to stick a little nearer to your pride? Well, there is nothing to stop you from walking around the block each day, or going for a swim in the nearby leisure centre or fitness suite. You may find that family, home or personal issues may not always go exactly to plan, However if you choose the right people to work with about this, this year can prove to be a time when you learn a lot about what makes you really tick.

Confide In Me ( 24th August – 23rd September) LOVE: Using your willpower in a positive go-getting way, if you can, take up the hobbies and interests which expand your social circle, this can draw goodness your way. Yet this is going to be a year, when communication is going to be more vitally important than probably ever before. Now there can be times this year, when rather than being a person of principle, you can be seen as being set in your ways, and bordering on pedantic. Developing your listening skills is going to be a vital component of keeping your chances good. HEALTH: This year could leave you feeling drained, and even if you are a natural night owl and this is something you're going to need to top up at every opportunity. If you are wanting to open up your world, travel, train, absorb new ways of looking at life, someone, somewhere, may try to stop you. This could be someone close, it could be an authority figure or it could be rules and regulations. And the rule of law can be important too. Any obstacles like this may prove incredibly frustrating and very stressful. Even everyday conversations could get blighted by politics. In this situation you will have to learn to switch off

17

Some Kind Of Bliss (24th September – 23rd October) LOVE: You have learnt that you don't need anyone in your life, not unless they are someone truly special who makes a full contribution. So hold with your self-esteem but remind yourself if you are ever pondering the downside of this, well at least you are free to meet someone special. You are wise enough to see that nothing is truly perfect. Sometimes when you get a bit annoyed, is when you are at your best. Follow your own instincts, and a lot of good stuff can unfold this year. This may mean working out some coping strategies which will help you to enjoy more interaction. HEALTH: Now of course the odd tasty morsel is impossible to resist. If balancing the books is proving challenging, or a close intimate relationship is not quite going to plan, these kind of issues can affect your peace of mind. Fortunately by adjusting your hopes and expectations, and especially of other people you will be able to revive your ambitions. Steer clear of anyone who does little to nurture and support you.

Never Too Late (24th October – 22nd November) LOVE: Mental stimulation is going to be an important factor in helping you to feel fulfilled in your love life this year. Now, you are someone whose energies can often be complex. Anything which is not good may need to go. Anything which is good should be welcomed. The first half of the year may seem as if the world is ganging up on you at times but this is all about you developing a new reality in relationships of all kinds. But if you have been clinging on to a tie because change feels scary, try to reassure yourself that you are at your very best; when the changes come thick and fast, however much this is what you resist. HEALTH: You can be a creature of routine and this is a good time to evaluate and start to simplify your approach to life. If that means giving up some things that have been mainstays in the past, then so be it. If you have tended to be the dominate person in a union, your partner may challenge this. If you have tended to be more centred on your own needs, someone somewhere may tell you, very bluntly, how they feel. None of this is going to be great for your ego or confidence, but you can learn a great deal about yourself and how people see you.

Did It Again (23rd November – 21st December) LOVE: You have a reputation as being the most tricky to pin down. You may be surprised by how much more a sensitive dimension influences your decisions. This may also mean coming to terms with any past separations or sadness that you carry to this day. Now you may not be keen to acknowledge some of these but if, however, you find yourself reacting to situations in a defensive way, or walking away from the potential for romance, at any point, this may be driven more by fear and past anger. If you can tackle this, your prospects can brighten. In the second half of the year you may get a massive opportunity to gain from joining together, rather than going it alone. HEALTH: One of your great traits is your thirst for information. This year, you can gain a lot health and fitness wise. From a food perspective, you might find yourself keener on whole foods or organic merchandise. Your exercise interests may also change. Your intimate relationships can be complex from June. Look to create tranquillity, relaxation and if need be, mediation, whenever possible.

18

I Believe In You (22nd December – 20th January) LOVE: Through the year you will have an inherent energy which will allow you to express yourself and your individuality. Now this can be through a creative project or hobby or by being the heartbeat of a situation which is very much steeped in your personality. However success alone may not be enough to give you the inner happiness you crave. This year you will want to feel that there is real depth and meaning to your bond you share with your partner or you will want to feel that the friendship element is strong. HEALTH: How are your nerves? Now, whether life pressures came from work, lust or just through deep personal issues, the outcome has probably been similar, with too much responsibility and not enough help. There is a whole raft of benefits to tap into. If you can reach out to others, work closely with them, and embrace the concept of co-operation. Accepting that others can do as well as you, even if not quite in the same order, could prove really liberating. Furthermore, enjoying linking with others through clubs, activities, and sports teams can be a great way to tune up your body into better shape.

I Should Be So Lucky (21st January – 19th February) LOVE: Your preferred state is often to retain some detachment, even if you are in a relationship, and very loyal to the one you love. Furthermore, on the first day of 2013 you may experience added confidence and help you believe that your love life can be something better. Now, if you are single, it also points towards getting to know someone slowly, potentially, yet if you do pitch in too quickly you may suddenly get a stab of anxiety. In the later part of the first quarter work pressures and responsibilities may be heavy. Be conscious that however you see yourself may not be how others see you, and a surprise can be sprung, so it’s important that you don't take your love life for granted. HEALTH: This year begins with you getting onto a better footing. This will give you a real determination and drive although stresses and strains may come because you are doing so well. You will need to have some external diversions to help you to deal with these. Through June you will experience an appreciation of fun and sociability and with added financial progress; this can help you to step up in ways, which in the past may have seemed closed to you.

In Your Eyes (20th February – 20th March) LOVE: This is an important year for your love life but you might need to be a lot stronger in showing leadership, to yourself. Keeping clear lines of communication is also going to be important as wires may well get crossed. Towards the end of the year, travel can certainly bring a stale tie to life, or if you are solo, you can meet someone through a knowledge based situation such as at a seminar or at college. HEALTH: This year can see you starting to expand, quite a few strands of your situation, but progress will come from and openness to knowledge. Now this may see you formally learning new skills, or deploying experience you have gained in recent years. If you can apply this way of looking at what you eat and drink and how you exercise. Yet there may be some clashes where you may encounter someone more forceful, or more opinionated.
