Ania Bieszynska looks at Poland’s positive transformations during the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship
SPORTS any people in Poland were afraid that we would not be able to organise EURO 2012 and that we would embarrass ourselves in front of the whole world. However, the reality surpassed the wildest dreams of the Poles. From all sides, you hear words of delight, admiration and congratulations. You can also see: great stadiums in Warsaw, Poznan, Gdansk and Wroclaw; the new airport, refurbished; new railway stations; a motorway (the one to Warsaw was opened 40 hours before the start of the event); many investments in cities; and great public transport. However, the greatest was the attitude of the Poles. It started with volunteers; 24,000 applied to help. Five thousand, five hundred people were employed from 142 countries (and the oldest volunteer was over 80 years old). They greeted fans at airports and train stations; they were in the stadiums and fan zones; they handed out plans of the cities, advised people and directed them to public transport, and worked in newspaper offices. Poland united in an extraordinary way: cities full of flags, flags on cars, white and red dresses on the streets (even as Poland dropped out of the competition). People on the streets were smiling at each other, helping foreigners. Many people supported their teams in the fan zones; in Warsaw (in front of the Palace of Culture), in one match, there were over 100,000 people. There was

Wspaniałe stadiony w Warszawie, Poznaniu, Gdańsku i Wrocławiu, nowe lotniska, odnowione lub nowe dworce kolejowe, autostrady (ta do Warszawy oddana do użytku 40 h przed początkiem imprezy), wiele inwestycji w miastach, świetna komunikacja. Jednak najwspanialsza była postawa Polaków. Zaczęło się od wolontariuszy – zgłosiło się 24 tys. osób. Pracowało 5,5 tys. ludzi ze 142 krajów (najstarszy wolontariusz miał ponad 80 lat). Witali kibiców na lotniskach, dworcach, byli na stadionach i w strefach kibica – rozdawali plany miasta, doradzali, kierowali do komunikacji, pracowali w biurach prasowych. Polska zjednoczyła się w niesamowity sposób – miasta pełne flag, flagi na samochodach, biało-czerwone stroje na ulicach (nawet jak Polska odpadła z mistrzostw). Ludzie na ulicach uśmiechali się do siebie, pomagali obcokrajowcom. Wiele ludzi kibicowało w strefach kibica – w warszawskiej (przed Pałacem Kultury) na jednym meczu było ponad 100 tys. ludzi.
