University of Kansas became the first public institution in the United States to adopt a faculty open access policy. In July 2011, KU Dean of Libraries Lorraine Haricombe invited deans and directors at universities and colleges with established open access policies to discuss the possibility of organizing. The result of that call was the formation of the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (COAPI), a growing organization of 41 North American universities that collaborates and advocates on a global level.

his October, KU reaffirmed its commitment to making scholarly work widely available by signing the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities (www.berlin9.org) in conjunction with International Open Access Week.
