2001 NCAA CAA Tournament First Round In 2001, the University of Kansas soccer team shocked the Big 12 as well as the rest of the women’s soccer community by storming out to a program-best 13-7 record, including a 7-3 mark in conference play and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in Lincoln, Neb. Kansas faced Brigham Young University in the opening round of the national tournament, which included 64 teams for the first time. After a scoreless first half, the Cougars notched the game-winning tally in the 76th minute.

Monica Brothers

Despite the loss, the Jayhawks could be proud of their accomplishments in 2001: • KU appeared in the Central Region poll for 11-straight weeks, and received votes for the national top 25 poll for the first time in school history. • Four Jayhawks earned All-Big 12 Conference honors - junior Pardis Brown and senior Hilla Rantala were selected to the second team, while freshmen Monica Brothers and Meghan Miller made the Big 12 All-Newcomer team. • The Jayhawks made their second-straight trip to the Big 12 Soccer Championship in San Antonio, Texas. • Three Kansas players recorded hat tricks - Monica Brothers (at Oklahoma State), Natalie Hoogveld (at Colorado) and Brianna Valento (vs. St. Louis). • Rantala set a new single-game record for assists with four at Oklahoma State. KU’s only losses during the regular season came against nationally ranked opponents. After splitting the first two matches of the season, the Jayhwaks won six of their next seven to enjoy their best start in program history.

Hilla Rantala

After a tough loss at No. 5 Nebraska, the team set a program record by collecting its fifth Big 12 victory of the season. Prior to this season, KU’s top conference cee mark was 33-5-1, 5 11,, which was achieved in its first season in the Big 122 of 1996.
