Interior Design Tips for the new season: Part 2 Slip into something a little more comfortable! Slip covers often have a bad image but they are truly wonderful things. They can serve as a means of changing your furniture’s look to reflect the seasons. These easily removed coverings allow you to have a sophisticated look without constantly worrying about people dirtying or spilling on your furniture. Slip covers are ideal for rooms used frequently by children. Wicker baskets. Wicker baskets are an economical and elegant way to add storage to any room. Baskets can be used to store and display books, architectural and decor magazines, toys, towels and blankets to name a few. Place a couple of small wicker baskets on the counter-tops in your kitchen to beautifully display and store your fruit and vegetables. Go green. Add plants to your living space. Add them to every room, small or large, few or many. Plants are an inexpensive means to accessorising your space and adding color and texture. Not only are plants beautiful but many can clean household air and balance humidity. They can absorb pollutants and remove harmful gases from the air. No home should be without these wonderful greens! Paint or wallpaper your bookcases. This instant pop of color will brighten and re-energize any room. It’s amazing

6

how something so simple as a coat of colorful paint can instantly energise and transform your space. Perhaps the simplest and most inexpensive way to transform a boring space is to apply a coat of paint somewhere unexpected. Bookcases are an ideal place to start because you don’t need to paint a large area. Other fun places to add a pop of color include painting fireplace mantels, the insides of closets, hallways and ceilings. Use area rugs to soften hardwood floors. Throw rugs give warmth and can add great texture, color and personality to your living space. Hardwood floors are beautiful and easy to maintain but they lack the comfort that carpeted floors offer, especially in the cooler months. Area rugs can add fun and functionality to your living space. Use several of varying patterns and fabrics together to showcase your character. Or add several rugs of the same pattern and fabric, or different textures but the same color. The possibilities are endless. You can change your area rugs to reflect the seasons using warmer tones and fabrics for cooler months and lighter ones for the warmer days of the year. There are many lovely cotton, washable area rugs which are ideal for those homes with children. There really is no reason why a home with young children cannot also be a stylish one.

Get Fit For Life! Personal trainer Jade Parsons explains how exercise can make a ‘better you’.

W

hen someone has a type of anxiety or depression, exercise often seems like the last thing on their mind. Although once someone can get motivated, exercise can really make a huge difference to that person. Exercises can help to and improve health problems; this could be high blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis also. Lots of research on anxiety, depression and the effects of exercise show the psychological and physical benefits of exercise could really help reduce anxiety in a lot of people. Exercise may also help to keep types of anxieties and depression from coming back. The reason exercising and moving more helps is because it is releasing a chemical in the brain that make you feel good, (neurotransmitters, endorphins and endocannabinoids). It has a calming effect on the body as it increases the temperature of your body and can be a good distraction from your normal day. It also helps reduce immune system chemicals that could worsen types of depression. Many people find that they can really boost their confidence through exercises as they get to learn about their body, push them selves and build new relationships as well as improving there life and appearance. It helps people take control and do something positive for themselves. Any exercise should improve someone’s mood it does not need to be an exercise program or a set thing or set time. We just

12

need to add more! Physical activity and exercise is not the same thing, but both are beneficial to your health. • Physical activity is activities that will contract muscles and use energy and can include work or household just normal day things. • Exercise is a planned, structured and repetitive body movement done to improve or maintain physical fitness. (This doesn’t mean it should be the same every time. Also does not need to be a confusing plan and structured to the minute, you should make your self flexible so that you can still do something even when you really don’t feel like it!) Exercise can be lots of things that boost your activity level to help you feel better. How to stay motivated? • Try going to set classes of the type of exercise you think you like. • Prepare your self to have rubbish days of weeks and think about your barriers. • Set little reminders for to make time each day to add something active. • Try things you did as a child. • Bring friends with you when you exercise. • Make an activity day out of it, like a group bike ride? • Try doing it for a charity • Exercise as a family. • Try to get a training/gym partner where you can push each other. • Set goals for your self. • Ask for help! ever before has a combination of Reigate’s horrible history, paranormal activity and unexplained events been put together in such a way as the ‘Reigate Ghost Walk’. The 90 minute tour takes in haunted buildings, sites of murder and historical nasties and costs £6 each (exact money please). It’s all terribly over-acted and audience participation is encouraged. Gavin has spent an evening in Knight’s department store with Val Hood (a psychic/medium who has appeared in Living TV’s ‘Most Haunted’), the Sussex Paranormal Investigation team and the shop’s staff. ‘Why does Knight’s merchandise move around at night? Who is Joshua, and why does the purple lady haunt this store?’ All will be revealed on the Reigate Ghost Walk, as well as many other tales of mystery from beyond the veil. Hear of Reigate's witches, ghosts, hangings and highwaymen.

Legal Matters Nicola Dudley on inheritance tax planning for lump sum payments

D

o you have life assurance? If so, do you know what happens to the funds when you die? If the funds are paid to your estate and your estate is likely to be liable to Inheritance Tax on your death then you have potentially already lost 40% of the value of any lump sum payments. You may also be entitled to a death in service benefit, meaning cash will be available if you die while still employed. Your pension will probably provide a similar lump sum if you die before retirement. It would be useful if these lump sums did not form part of your taxable estate on your death. The solution The answer is to make sure any cash payable on your death is paid directly to your family rather than via your will. However you may not be sure how you’d want the funds to be divided up. Giving a large amount of cash to your children may be unwise but giving it all to your spouse or partner would only increase your combined estates resulting in the lump sums being liable to Inheritance Tax on their death. The answer is to use a Pilot Trust. This is a simple trust set up in your lifetime with a small amount (usually £10). You can then nominate that trust to receive the funds on your death, which means that they will be outside of both yours and your spouse’s estates for Inheritance Tax purposes. The trust can be for the benefit of all your family, but leaving the trustees to choose how much to give to each of the beneficiaries and when. You can also leave a letter setting out your wishes to give guidance to the trustees. The advantages A Pilot Trust has a number of potential advantages:

26

• Asset protection – the trust can help protect your money from the divorce or bankruptcy of a beneficiary or if your spouse re-marries. • Flexibility – The trustees can take each beneficiary’s circumstances and needs into account, perhaps making loans if they’re not sure the beneficiary can be trusted to receive money outright. • Investments – the trustees can use the trust to invest in assets to produce income for your family. • Easy administration – if you have lots of separate death benefit payments, it will be far easier for your Executors to keep track of the money if it’s all in one trust. Computer Tips

from Keystroke Associates

T

here is a lot being said about cloud computing so what is it? In the simplest terms, cloud computing means storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer's hard drive. The cloud is just a metaphor for the Internet. What cloud computing is not about is your hard drive. When you store data on or run programs from the hard drive, that's called local storage. Everything you need is physically close to you, which means accessing your data is fast and easy, for that one computer, or others on the local network. Working off your hard drive is how the computer industry functioned

for decades; some would argue it's still superior to cloud computing. The problem comes when the provider of the cloud has a technical difficulty and you cannot get at your data. How reliable is it? There are many providers now for cloud services. Want to know more call Judy on 01883 346 516. For further advice on all things computing, please call Keystroke Associates on 01883 346516.

THE GAGE PLAYERS 2015 is our 65th anniversary year! Our November 2015 production is The Teahouse of the August Moon by John Patrick, based on the novel by Vern Sneider, directed by Gill Lucas. This is a light-hearted comedy about the American occupation of Japanese islands after the Second World War; it features a misfit captain sent to ‘Americanise’ a village and the wily village head man assigned to him as interpreter, who runs rings round him. Instead of building a pentagon-shaped school, the villagers inveigle the captain into building a teahouse, and instead of touristic merchandising, the captain happily comes up with a plan to mass-produce the local hooch, and sell it to the American bases. Fun and games ensue, amid the attentions of a graceful Geisha, and it is an open bet how the ‘Americanisation’ pans out. Performance dates: 8pm on Thursday, 26th November, Friday, 27th November and Saturday 28th November at the Riddell Hall, Walton on the Hill. Doors and bars open at 7.30pm. Tickets £10. Box office: 01737 812 703.
