THE COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AND DIRECTORY FOR RESIDENTS OF KT20

may 2017 issue 108

Advertising in CONNECTION MAGAZINE could be the best decision you ever make for your business! Many local businesses think so.... “I’ve tried several different ways of advertising and leaflet distribution and without any doubt Connection is the most effective way. It hits my exact target market – local people. Each advert increases my revenue by 15% per week – or an increase of about £500 – that’s a great return on investment on an £88 advert!” Grant Hardy, Hardys Fish & Chips, Burgh Heath

“Since featuring in your magazine we have noticed an incredible rise in visits to our website – in fact they have doubled! As the web address only really features in our cat of the month ads we are confident that awareness has been raised through your incredible generosity by featuring us monthly – huge thanks!” Pamela Green Cats Protection, Epsom & Ewell

“Advertising with Connection Magazine has made a real boost to the number of enquiries we are now receiving – they are up by 35%! It has raised local awareness of our business and brought in local custom. If you are considering advertising with Connection I would strongly suggest you do. It has made a huge difference to us.” Karl and Nicole, Bodyworks Practice, Banstead

C O N N E C T I O N

“I have recently purchased a database package that allows me to enter customer details and compile a report of where the work comes from, website, referrals etc. I have been in your magazine for over 2 years now and I have won jobs, directly from that advert, which amount to £20,000 of profit, not turnover, profit! Steve Barnett, Carpet care plus, Walton on the Hill

“Connection Magazine has been a great find for me. I find the response has been far better than the previous ads via yell.com and the Local Guardian free sheet and all the leads are local cutting costs. Keep up the good work.” Doug Muldoon, High Trees Carpentry, Burgh Heath

M A G A Z I N E

“I started advertising in Connection Magazine in April 2011 and the response has been tremendous! The phone calls have risen month on month and I now get on average 5 calls a week. This has made a big difference to my business. I could safely say that 20% of my work comes from the adverts with Connection.“ Kevin Butterfield, Motor Vehicle Services, Lower Kingswood

Get Fit For Life! Is it pain? Is it DOMS or are you doing something wrong?

P

ain is not nice, but what if the pain you are feeling is doing you good? Exercise pain is a different type of pain but that doesn’t mean it feels nice. Some people enjoy the ache and sometimes it’s too much…. but in most cases it’s doing you good. Studies have found that people who exercise and stay flexible manage their pain much better than those who don’t. The most common area for pain is your lower back. Exercises for lower back pain can strengthen the back, stomach, and leg muscles. They help support your spine, relieving back pain. Always ask your doctor before doing any exercise for back pain, as some exercises may not be recommended and can be harmful. Exercise is good for low back pain but not all exercises are beneficial. Any mild discomfort felt at the start of these exercises should disappear as muscles become stronger. Always ask for help and think about if you are performing the exercise the right way. Exercise is there to help you manage pain better. There are different types of pain and some people don’t know the type of pain they are feeling. If you are doing things correctly and getting the right help you should not be causing damage. The idea that if you want to build muscle, get stronger or even lose body fat, you have to hurt is wrong. IT IS NOT GOOD! You should not be in pain! As I said, people don’t know different types of pain. If It’s ‘DOMS’ then it’s ok –

12

it’s normal. Delayed onset muscle soreness, (DOMS) can occur when you do a new exercise and or change your exercise routine, but will decrease as your muscles get used to the new thing. When your muscles are required to work harder it is believed to cause microscopic damage to the muscle fibres, resulting in muscle soreness or stiffness and DOMS. The soreness is part of an adaptation process that leads to greater stamina and strength as the muscles recover and build. DOMS can last between three and five days. The pain, which can range from mild to severe, usually occurs one or two days after the exercise. This sort of muscle pain should not be confused with any kind of pain you might experience during exercise, such as the acute, sudden and sharp pain of an injury, such as muscle strains or sprains. You can exercise with DOMS, although it may feel uncomfortable you could focus on exercises targeting less affected muscles to allow the most affected muscle groups time to recover. Exercise is the best thing for pain. trust me, I know. Just do more! H

Nicola Dudley asks: does your will need changing?

aving a valid will is better than not having one, however, it may be some time since you made your Will and it may need updating or revising. It is advisable to check on a regular basis that your Will still reflects your wishes. Circumstances change, the people you wanted to benefit five years ago might have died, you may have lost contact with them or they may have become involved in a bad relationship or have money problems. Your family arrangements may have changed, you may have become divorced, have had grandchildren or married. Your Will may NEED changing! • If you get divorced your Will will still be valid, although it will be interpreted as if your ex-spouse had died before you. The provisions you made to cover this event will come into effect. You may need to appoint another Executor. • A marriage or registered civil partnership will revoke a Will. Your estate will be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. This may not be want you want. It is possible to revive your Will by way of a Codicil rather than having to re-do the whole Will. A Codicil can also be used to make simple changes to your Will. • Following the Finance Act 2006, the way that gifts left to children are taxed has changed considerably. If you have left your estate to your children for them to inherit at an age in excess of eighteen then you should be aware of the possibility of additional tax on their inheritance which can be avoided by restructuring your Will. • If a beneficiary is in financial difficulties it may not be prudent to leave them your estate as it may go straight to pay off their debts. It is possible to protect their inheritance via your Will.

20

• You may have had children since you made your Will and need to appoint Guardians to take care of them were you to die whilst they are still young. • Recent changes in the law relating to Inheritance Tax may mean that your Will is not as tax efficient as it was only a few years ago. It is a good idea to have any existing Will checked for tax efficiency. What can I put in my Will? Not only does your Will make sure your assets go to the people you really want to benefit but you can also: Choose someone you trust to make sure your wishes are carried out. Appoint someone to look after your children. Pass on heirlooms or items of sentimental value. Give cash gifts to friends, godchildren or charities. Reduce Inheritance Tax by gifting a percentage of your estate to charity. Record your funeral wishes. Set up a trust for a vulnerable person.

The Children’s Trust charity launches new campaign

A

ctress Emily Carey launched a new fundraising campaign, #MyBrave, at The Children’s Trust Easter Fair in Tadworth on Saturday 15 April. The event, which raised over £10,000, pushed Emily out of her comfort zone by challenging her to confront her fears, as part of the campaign which calls for supporters to do something brave to help raise money for children with brain injury. Known for her role as Grace in Casualty (BBC 1) and set to appear in the forthcoming film Wonder Woman, Carey took on a series of #MyBrave challenges which were open to the 2,000 members of the public who attended the event. The challenges included climbing a 24ft climbing wall, a claustrophobic cave experience, holding a creepy crawly and putting her hand in mystery ‘brave boxes’ which were made by children at the rehabilitation centre. The 13 year old actress who plays the young Diana Prince in the forthcoming Warner Brothers film, said: “I first became involved with The Children’s Trust when researching for the part of Grace Beauchamp in Casualty, Grace was to be involved in an accident and acquire a severe brain injury. I visited The Children’s Trust to meet families affected by brain injury and I was humbled by their strength and bravery. I am delighted to be able to support the charity in its work and be part of #MyBrave. Taking on a personal challenge to help raise

24

money means everyone wins, and most importantly, the charity can continue its amazing work helping children with brain injury.” Every year more than 40,000 children in the UK are left with a life-changing brain injury as a result of an accident or illness. Specialist rehabilitation provided by The Children’s Trust gives these children the best chance at recovery. They confront some of the biggest challenges of their lives, trying to relearn the basic skills they lost such as movement, communication and feeding themselves. The Children’s Trust wants you to take on a challenge, and raise money for children with brain injury live the best life possible. Whether it’s a sponsored swim, abseil, or something totally unique to you. Find your brave, visit www.mybrave.co.uk for inspiration.
