“I started advertising in Connection Magazine in April 2011 and the response has been tremendous! The phone calls have risen month on month and I now get on average 5 calls a week. This has made a big difference to my business. I could safely say that 20% of my work comes from the adverts with Connection.“ Motor Vehicle Services “In the first two years of being in Connection Magazine I have won jobs, directly from that advert, which amount to £20,000 of profit, not turnover, profit!” Carpet care plus “We have been advertising with Connection for around 7 years, we have found it a great way to advertise our offers and news from the salon and have gained a lot of clients through this. We often have clients comment on the fact that they see our adverts every month. The adverts always look fab and I would definitely recommend Connection to any local business looking to advertise!” Bliss Hair Salon

Get Fit For Life! Personal trainer Jade Parsons explains why you need lose fat and not just weight when on a diet. Obesity UK is on track to have the highest obesity levels in Europe, while a fifth of world’s obese adults live in six high-income Englishspeaking countries. Around one in every 11 deaths in the UK is now linked to carrying excess fat. This is because being overweight or obese means a high risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoarthritis. It also can make people much more likely to develop types of cancer. Eating healthily is not always easy but we can all try to be more aware. I do think we need to take control and not just rely on a tax on foods or being told by the doctor. We all should know if food is bad and if we don’t we should look it up not waiting till after and then ask for help when there is a problem. Lets start now!! Sugar is a big part of the obesity crisis but actually carbohydrates are too!! Most people have heard of a low carb diet somewhere and it really does help you to lose that extra fat. Fat loss not just weight loss! A low-carb diet and life style means you eat fewer carbohydrates and higher amounts of good fats. You also need to minimize your intake of sugar and starches. Low-carb eating makes it easier to lose weight and to control your blood sugar levels. Carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars in the intestines. The sugar is then absorbed into the blood, raising the blood glucose levels. This increases the production of the hormone insulin, our fat storing hormone. Simple.

14

Carbohydrates have a vicious cycle leading to weight gain as I body just doesn’t stay full and it’s not long before we what to eat food again! Low carb eating can really help the release of fat from its stores especially around the stomach. If you stop eating sugar and starch you usually have some side effects as your body adjusts. You can get headaches, fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations and irritability. The side effects rapidly subside as your body adapts and your fat burning increases. The main reason for this is that carbohydrate-rich foods usually increases the water retention in your body, so when you stop having high-carb foods you’ll lose the excess water through your kidneys. This can actually result in a slight dehydration and a lack of salt during the first week, before the body has adapted. Some people prefer to decrease their intake of carbohydrates slowly to minimize the side effects. But actually doing it quickly can make you feel better. Removing most sugar and starch often results in a big weight loss on the scale within a few days, it can be mainly fluid but should stay off if you stay off the carbs. Why not give it ago and see if it helps you? LEGS, BUMS AND TUMS CLASS! Legal Matters

B

Nicola Dudley on Lasting Powers of Attorney

y Lasting Powers of Attorney are legal documents that allow you to appoint someone to make decisions for you in respect of your financial arrangements or health. There are two types of Lasting Power and you can have both or either of them. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney there is no one, neither your spouse, parents, siblings or children who will legally be allowed to make decisions on your behalf should you be unable to make them due to mental or physical incapacity. The time to consider making a Lasting Power is not when you think that you may be losing your capacity but whilst you know that you still have mental capacity. Without this document someone, and it does not have to be someone you know, can make an application to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy and they will then be able to make decisions for you. The person appointed might not be someone you would have chosen yourself and the process is long and expensive. Lasting Powers give you the opportunity to make your own choices and decisions and to provide a degree of comfort to your relatives in knowing that there will be someone who will be able to help you should the need arise. Like an insurance policy, you may never need them but if you do they will be invaluable. If you are considering Lasting Powers of Attorney, here are some matters to consider:• Who to appoint? You can appoint anyone over the age of 18 who is not bankrupt and who has mental capacity themselves. You can appoint more than one person. • If you appoint more than one per-

26

son you can choose whether they are to act together or independently of each other. • What if they can’t act? You can also appoint Replacement Attorneys. • What will they be able to do? Anything that you can but restrictions, guidance and conditions can be included. • Does anyone else need to be involved? You will need someone to confirm that you have capacity, that you know what you are signing and that you have not been put under any pressure to sign. This person can be a friend or a professional. • You can choose to notify someone that you are signing the Lasting Power. Everyone should have a Lasting Power of Attorney! Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0345 833 9025 or 07900 931478, email: ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk

R

eaders interested in horses or photography need venture no further than Denbies in Dorking early this summer. From 6-12 June at the Art Gallery, Denbies, Surrey, RH5 6AA, Surrey-based equestrian photographer Carys Jones holds her first solo exhibition entitled ‘Equine & Abstract’ featuring a collection of beautiful equestrian images captured in Iceland and the French Camargue, alongside a handful of her more abstract images. Launching her equestrian photography career on the back of redundancy a few years ago, Carys now juggles two professions, one of which involves spending time photographing horses - her passion, being both a long-standing horse owner and rider. She specialises in capturing horses at liberty in their native environments and often presents her pictures in black and white, as fine art prints and framed images, ideal for home decoration. Carys also carries out a small number of commissions of people with their

30

horses each year. As well as the beauty of the horse, Carys is intrigued by the creative abilities of the camera and is drawn increasingly to abstract and impressionistic photographic interpretations of what she sees around her. Against this backdrop, the exhibition will also feature some of her more abstract interpretations of nature, particularly flowers and water.

The exhibition is free to visit and a percentage of the proceeds from sales will go to Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled’s ‘Riding High’ fundraising campaign (http://www.cranleighrdagroup.co.uk - launched to help it raise over £1/2million needed urgently to rebuild its main premises). More examples of Carys's work are available at www.carysjonesphotography.co.uk. Carys can be contacted by email on studio@carysjonesphotography.co.uk or by phone on 0790 4066465 and looks forward to welcoming you to her exhibition.

Computer Tips

W

e have had a number of experiences now with installing Windows 10 machines and upgrading Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 machines and I wanted to share these with you so that you can prepare or call us to help. It is rumoured that Windows 10 free upgrade will become unavailable from July 29th 2016. DO NOT let this push you into upgrading, you must think carefully before you do it. You must backup all of your data before you attempt the upgrade, you should also allow at least 2.5 hours for the upgrade depending on your download speed. Windows 7 does not always download using the ntegrated windows update routine and you need a special download

from Keystroke Associates media pack. You need at least 6gm RAM for windows 10 to run smoothly and if you use office starter pack I have seen some upgrades knock this software out. The issue with that situation is that starter pack was free with windows 7 and you are unlikely to have a copy of the software. Don’t buy Office 365, you will be paying for it every year, if you can hold back go to amazon and purchase office home and student which will be an infinity license, until it stops operating with the next operating system of course. We are gaining experience by the day so if you need us please call Judy 01883 346 516.
