“I started advertising in Connection Magazine in April 2011 and the response has been tremendous! The phone calls have risen month on month and I now get on average 5 calls a week. This has made a big difference to my business. I could safely say that 20% of my work comes from the adverts with Connection.“ Motor Vehicle Services “In the first two years of being in Connection Magazine I have won jobs, directly from that advert, which amount to £20,000 of profit, not turnover, profit!” Carpet care plus “We have been advertising with Connection for around 7 years, we have found it a great way to advertise our offers and news from the salon and have gained a lot of clients through this. We often have clients comment on the fact that they see our adverts every month. The adverts always look fab and I would definitely recommend Connection to any local business looking to advertise!” Bliss Hair Salon

Time for a spring clearout? Not sure where to start? Get creative with the ideas below to help begin your spring declutter.

T

he idea of living a simplified, uncluttered life with less stuff sounds attractive to many. They have considered the benefits of owning fewer possessions: less to clean, less debt, less to organize, less stress, more money and energy for their greatest passions. They are ready to declutter but some get quickly tripped up by the very next question… where in the world do I begin? The decluttering journey doesn’t need to be as painful as some make it out to be. Use these creative ways to get started: Give away one item each day. If you did this every day for a year just think how much clearer your house would be with 365 fewer items in it. Over several years there would be quite a transformation by simply reducing your stuff one day at a time. Fill one rubbish bag. This is a really simple decluttering technique. Just grab a large rubbish bag and see how quickly you can fill it. Try the Wardrobe Hanger Experiment. To identify wardrobe pieces to clear out, hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct direction. After six months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you can easily discard. This experiment could also be applied to a number of clutter areas in your home (cleaners, toys, linens, tools, hobbies and craft items). Make a list. Create a list of places in your home to declutter beginning with the easiest. And then when you’re done with one area, STOP. This list could be made as easy or difficult as you want

6

based upon what areas of your home make up the list (drawers/closets /rooms) and could easily fit into any schedule. Take the 12-12-12 Challenge. A simple task of locating 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to be returned to their proper home can be a really fun and exciting way to quickly organize 36 things in your house. This challenge can become a quick competition between you and your kids who don’t have to be too old to take part. Experiment with numbers. Project 333 challenges people to wear only 33 articles of clothing for 3 months. If 33 articles of clothing seems too little or too many, adjust the rules as you need by picking a new number. The important thing is to challenge yourself to live with less and see what you learn from the experiment. Use your imagination. Psychology Today recommends using your imagination to help declutter objects that may seem difficult to remove. Try asking yourself unique questions like, ‘If I was just buying this now, how much would I pay?’ These creative techniques may prove to be very helpful for some with difficulties removing unneeded clutter. The Four-Box Method. Take four boxes into an area to be decluttered: rubbish, give away, keep, or relocate. Each item in every room was placed into one of the four categories. No item was passed over. Each was considered individually. Some projects may take an hour, others days or weeks. But the technique and principles remained the same.

Personal trainer Jade Parsons gives the lowdown on muscles and how to look after yours

e have around 650 muscles in your body. These muscles help you move, lift things, pump blood through your body, and even help you breathe. Healthy muscles let you move freely and keep your body strong. There are Skeletal muscles, Smooth muscles (which are also called involuntary muscles) and your Cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscles cover your skeleton, giving your body its shape. They are attached to your skeleton by strong, springy tendons or are directly connected to rough patches of bone. Skeletal muscles are under voluntary control, which means you consciously control what they do or don’t do. So we need to be mindful about working them and using them right. The gluteus Maximus is the largest muscle in the human body. Standing up from a sitting position, climbing stairs, and staying in an erect position are all aided by the gluteus maximus. We need to use this muscle a lot. Not training your legs is the biggest training mistake you can make. I feel your Legs, Glutes and Core have to be the main muscles you should focus your training around. Your ab muscles and core area are linked directly into your pelvic floor and also many of the muscles in your upper legs originate in the same area of your lower abdomen. So you are training legs your midsection gets tighter and tighter. The more you are able to train and work your legs the more muscle you can build and the stronger you can be. Lifting heavy weights does not guarantee bigger muscles.

12

Building and strengthening skeletal muscle fortifies the bones, ligaments, and tendons. This will minimize the risk of injury that can occur in sports, training, getting out of your car, or playing with your kids. The more muscle you have the better your chance of a longer life. More muscle means more insulin receptor sites, more insulin receptors means it's easier for your body to minimize fat and stay lean!! Other things it can help with are posture, shape and pain levels. More strength in your legs is helping work core muscles more and more, which will lead to increasing your strength on upper-body movements. Squats & Deadlifts strengthen your legs & lower back. You should always make sure you are doing this correct and get the right advise. Lots of people don’t train their legs and it’s because it is physically & mentally hard. Everyone should try and add basic movements like squats into there day. Running, cycling or walking is for cardio and yes you are moving your legs but will never work your legs like squats, lunges & deadlifts exercises do. So try both and you’ll see how it will help you get better at sports and how your posture and strength of your upper-body will improve. LEGS, BUMS AND TUMS CLASS! Legal Matters

A

Nicola Dudley on the importance of making a will.

rticles urging you to make a Will appear with alarming regularity and hopefully most of you reading this article will have an up to date Will in place! As it is such an emotive and important issue, however, it is worth highlighting the instances where future upset can be avoided (or at least minimalized) if a valid Will exists. Valid Will It goes without saying that it is important that any Will you make is valid. A Will must be “workable” and is best prepared by an experienced professional. Some points to bear in mind are:• Include beneficiary’s full names and address so that they are easily identifiable, not everyone will know who “Auntie Joan” is. Make sure you use their given name rather than the name you know them by, they are often different! • Make sure that your intentions are clear. Don't assume that something will happen automatically, the children of a beneficiary who dies before you will not necessarily inherit. • Make sure your Will is witnessed correctly. If a beneficiary witnesses your Will they will not receive their inheritance. • Any amendments or alterations to a Will must be made at the time of signing and not afterwards and should be initialled by the person making the Will and the witnesses. Inheritance Tax If it is likely that Inheritance Tax will be payable and you are leaving a share of your estate to charity, would you want the charity to pay Inheritance Tax on their gift? Charities are exempt from Inheritance Tax but a gift of a share of your estate to charity could result in either the charity or your other beneficiaries receiving less than you anticipated. If you have remarried (or entered into a

16

civil partnership) following the death of a spouse then there is opportunity to save additional Inheritance Tax by careful Will drafting, making use of your deceased spouse’s Nil Rate Band which would otherwise be wasted. Second Families There are ways of making sure that your children from a previous relationship don’t “miss out” if you have remarried or have a second family. There is no need for your new family to be unduly prejudiced and with careful preparation everyone’s needs can be catered for and bad feeling (and cost) avoided after your death. Next steps? Bereavement Help

T

he death of someone close to you is a devastating experience whatever the circumstances and even when a death is expected – feelings of shock, disbelief and unreality can move into anger, panic and guilt. It can be a very lonely and frightening time – particularly after a funeral when the reality of everyday life can be overwhelming. It’s at this time that the support of others is important, and this time can be hard for family and friends too. Don’t be afraid to share your feelings – the family may feel they want to protect you by not talking about your loss when it might be the only thing you want to do. Grief has no timeline – it can strike out of the blue months and years after your loss when a piece of music or a programme on television brings back the memories. There is no right or wrong way to grieve and each person is different.

Mother’s Day 18th March Mother's Day History Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in the UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support. Earliest History of Mothers Day The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honour of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome. Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. The holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering

26

Sunday. History of Mother's Day: Mothering Sunday The more recent history of Mothers Day dates back to 1600s in England. Here a Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor mothers. After a prayer service in church to honor Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers. On the occasion, servants, apprentices and other employees staying away from their homes were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honor them. Traditionally children brought with them gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a simnel. Custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely by the 19th century. However, the day came to be celebrated again after World War II, when American servicemen brought the custom and commercial enterprises used it as an occasion for sales. Present Day Celebrations Today Mothers Day is celebrated in several countries including US, UK, India, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Mexico, Canada, China, Japan and Belgium. People take the day as an opportunity to pay tribute to their mothers and thank them for all their love and support. The day has become hugely popular and in several countries phone lines witness maximum traffic. There is also a tradition of gifting flowers, cards and others gift to mothers on the Mothers Day. The festival has become commercialised to a great extent. Florists, card manufacturers and gift sellers see huge business potential in the day and make good money through a rigorous advertising campaign.
