Pop Up Shakespeare Presented in collaboration with The Cat’s Grin Theatre Company

Inheritance Tax Have you made use of your annual allowance for Inheritance Tax? Individuals can gift up to £3,000 each financial year without reducing the amount that will be chargeable to Inheritance Tax at 0%. You can also give away as many “small gifts” of £250, provided you do not give the small gift to anyone who has received your annual allowance or any part of it. Have you paid for something on someone else’s behalf? Do you contribute towards an elderly relative’s care in the expectation that you will be repaid from their estate when they die? If the intention to repay is not recorded then you are not guaranteed to be repaid and the debt may not be deductible from the estate when they die. This could result in your loan being included in their estate for Inheritance Tax purposes and potentially taxed at 40%. Property Interests Protect your interest in property by putting a Deed of Trust in place to record your share. If you have lent money to your children to buy a house and expect them to repay it or wish to protect your investment in the event of their divorce, bankruptcy or death a Deed of Trust can evidence the respective shares in the net sale proceeds. Make a Will Do you have a Will? Does it reflect your current wishes? If not, consider putting in place at least a very simple Will to ensure that your estate passes to those you would wish to benefit on your death.If you have a disabled or vulnerable beneficiary a Will can protect their inheritance by placing it in trust for them

so as not to affect any income they currently receive, which they may not be entitled to if they inherited from you. Executors can decide when they receive their entitlement so as to protect them from outside influences. Lasting Powers of Attorney Is there someone you would trust to look after your finances or your health care decisions if you were unable to make decisions for yourself due to old age or incapacity? If you do not have an Enduring or Lasting Power of Attorney in place then anyone can apply to the Court to be appointed to look after you and your money. Make the decision yourself and consider putting Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. Next steps? Charlie’s Delight

embers of the Rotary Club of Ewell, led by their President Mike Shone, recently visited the Epsom workshops of MERU (Mechanical Engineering Resources Unit) and were shown around by Site Manager Hayley Philipault and Rotarian John Davis, a regular volunteer for MERU. MERU designs bespoke equipment for children and young people with disabilities and the group were very impressed with the wide range of equipment provided. Charlie, 4yrs old, is a delighted user and his mum says: "It has made such a difference to Charlie's life having a PlayStation 3 controller adapted by Meru. Charlie has spinal muscular atrophy, which causes severe muscle weakness and he is in a wheelchair full-time, struggling with most day-today tasks due to his muscle wastage. Charlie loves to play his PlayStation and used to have great difficulty pressing the buttons and reaching the back buttons on an original controller, getting very frustrated at not being able to play his games properly. He would always need help from an adult and get very disheartened. He can now play all his favourite games independently and with ease. He can also play with his friends online too, which he was unable to

do before." During the evening the Rotary Club of Ewell presented MERU with a cheque for £400 to help them continue with their essential and deserving work. MERU is part of Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People Family of Charities, and works in partnership with other charities in the group for the benefit of children and young people with disabilities. he fact is that a lot of people skip meals regularly, they'll take in less total calories and lose weight more successfully. Skipping just one meal will result in a drop in your body's blood sugar levels. When skipping breakfast your body loses an opportunity to start. Going for a long time not eating, you can force your body to shift to breaking down energy stores within the muscle. This means you will lose body strength and our body needs muscle to survive. Your body needs adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals each day. Skipping meals can make your body weak and unhealthy. Vitamins and minerals in foods benefit processes such as growth and development, disease prevention and overall well being. It’s a lot more beneficial to swap the calories, as we need to maintain a healthy lifestyle and set your body up to succeed. Going too long without eating will switch our body into "survival mode," which isn’t good. Your body will then store calories not burn calories. Also this might mean you to eat more calories than you would have done. It is best to listen to your body to tell if you are hungry or full. Don’t wait until you feel starving to eat, turn to healthy meals and healthy snacks throughout the day. If you miss meals because time is an issue, plan ahead to have some foods available that you can eat on the run.

A good meal in the morning can help your body prepare for the day to come, and lower your risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Remember the saying - “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.” I couldn’t agree more! Eating a healthy big breakfast is good because it’s when your body needs the most calories for energy. We need to eat less in the evening as what you don’t burn off is more likely to be stored as fat, as you become less active toward the end of the day. Also eating too close to bedtime can increase your blood sugar and insulin, which means it can be harder to fall asleep. So your last meal should be the lightest of the day. We also should be eating at least three hours before you go to sleep. It's important to note that everyone is different. There are a multitude of influences that can play a role in an individual's health and weight. Yes we need to eat less, but we still need to eat! Eating healthy food with the right amount of calories for what we do is the best plan. The general recommendation is to have healthier eating patterns and incorporate more physical activity, rather than skipping meals to lose weight.
