Get Fit For Life! Personal trainer Jade Parsons says there are no excuses not to exercise! I can’t exercise because…. Attitudes and exercise! Yes you are busy, yes you have a lot of responsibilities, but we all have the same amount of time. The truth is it’s about priorities and getting it done. So unless you believe being healthy and doing a bit of exercise to benefit your life is a priority, you will not fine time. Try to remember that other stuff you were so busy doing could mean nothing without your health. Remember that any exercise is better than no exercise and there are ways to get more results in less time, if you’re willing to do it. Plan something easy and put it in your dairy. It could be something simple like 10 minutes of walking before having a lunch break at work... or when get home, instead of sitting down, go for a brisk walk for 20 minutes. It’s getting sunny outside so you can - no excuses!! Start with short, time-efficient workouts and add more when you can. I can never figure out how something like a foot injury could lead someone to believe they can’t do any exercise at all. I had a client recently who came to me twice a week with her crutches as she had a big cut on the base of her foot so couldn’t walk on it, BUT SHE STILL CAME!! Naturally, some injuries can lay you up completely, and you should always follow the advice of your doctor. However, many common injuries are localized and may prevent certain activity around those areas, but not necessarily

14

in the rest of the body. Another excuse and a bad attitude habit is ‘all or nothing’. Many people see one diet mistake as a reason to give up on their entire day. You can’t think like this, if you slip off track JUST GET BACK ON! Like my client this morning had a donut. She wasn’t going to as she is training hard and watching her carbs, but she did it anyway. But instead of just saying I have wrecked today, she said because I ate it I will work harder and make sure I eat healthily for the rest of the day! When you understand that you can get great results from eating nutritious food 90% of the time, then if you mess up a meal or two, you know that won’t make or break you. You won’t feel guilty or worry because you can just count that slip up as one of your 10% meals. You do get some people think that if you cannot follow a good diet, there’s no point in training. The real fact is that if you really can’t workout or train then nutrition is more important than ever! It’s not black and white, its not easy but your body will thank you. New legs, bums and tums class run by me! An update on the Residence Nil Rate Band from Nicola Dudley

ou may remember from previous articles that I made reference to the “Residence” Nil Rate Band (“RNRB”), which will increase the Inheritance Tax free allowance when passing your home to your children or lineal descendants if you were to die after 6th April 2017. When it was proposed it was difficult to understand how the new allowance would work in practice but some aspects are becoming clearer. It is understood that the term “lineal descendants” may include not only children and grandchildren and their issue but also stepchildren, adopted children, foster children and possibly children for whom the deceased was a guardian. It may also include the spouse or civil partner of a lineal descendant. However, brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces etc are not included. The property could be gifted by Will or under the Intestacy Rules (if there is no Will) into a trust, although not all types of trust will qualify. The proposal is that if you have downsized then the RNRB may still be available, provided your former residence was sold on or after 8th July 2015 and either a less valuable property was purchased or no property was purchased. You would still have to leave your estate to lineal descendants to be able to claim the RNRB. The Executors of an estate that qualifies for the RNRB must remember to claim the relief, you don't get it automatically. Each individual will have their own RNRB, so a couple will have an allowance each. If the estate in total exceeds £2 million then the amount of RNRB that can be claimed will be reduced. It would appear that, as with the Nil Rate Band, it is possible for a surviving spouse’s (or civil partner’s) Executors to claim a transferrable RNRB of up to £100,000 even

22

if the first spouse died before 6th April 2017. So, there now appears to be four Nil Rate Bands :• The general Nil Rate Band (currently £325,000) • The transferrable Nil Rate Band (up to the current rate), for spouses and civil partners • The Residence Nil Rate Band (up to a total of £175,000 each individual by 202021) and • The transferrable Residence Nil Rate Band (up to the applicable RNRB rate) This sounds like good news but watch this space! Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk. Pack Up and Go!

E

Travel light this Summer by following Connection’s guide to packing the ultimate capsule wardrobe

veryone’s heard of a capsule wardrobe – that elusive chic and stylish holiday attire that fits in your handbag if you get it just right. You know the kind – colourful kaftans; little black dresses that are beach wraps by day and smouldering man-magnets by night: versatile thongs (we’re talking feet) and a push-up bikini that doubles as a peek-a-boo bra over evening drinks. If you’re not careful the capsule wardrobe can prove just as elusive as that perfect beach-babe body (tell me you didn’t embark on the cabbage and lentil detox diet pre-hols. However, there is something to be said for packing creatively, and eliminating post-vacation ironing piles, to say nothing of hefty excess luggage fines. A few hints, therefore wouldn’t go amiss... The first thing to do is to lay out everything you think you need. Get rid of half. You don’t need it. Honest. Then think about what you’re going to be doing. Chilling on the beach, shopping, sightseeing, cafe lunches, romantic dinners... Start to think about what you’ll wear for each occasion. This is where ‘capsule’ comes in – key items that work in lots of settings. Choose a core colour that will team up with neutral basics – blacks, whites and beiges (great with a tan), and keep fabrics plain, so you can jazz

28

them up with chunky jewellery, a wide belt or a colourful scarf. Here are some summertime basics that will stand you in good stead. Elegant white linen trousers. Light and cool in hot sunshine, but easily dressed up with a bit of bling and heels. Go for a wide-legged style. Summer dress. Great for both daytime and evening wear, and easily dressed up or down with accessories. Choose a cotton jersey or crinkly viscose so you can wear it straight from your case. Versatile skirt. Can be teemed with t-shirts or slinky camisoles, and is more stylish than shorts. Crop trousers. A fashion essential Cotton t-shirts. Two or three plain t-shirts in your core colours will team up with all your basics. If you like, swap one with a camisole or floaty top. Summer cardigan. A slinky wrap-around or v-neck cardie looks great over a dress or vest top when the temperature starts to drop. Swimsuit and sarong. Go for a classic one-piece and a bikini. They’re small enough to pack two! Embellished strappy sandals. You can get away with these on the beach, and on nights out. Throw in a pair of wedge sandals for added chic. Oops... better stop now. We’re meant to be thinking ‘capsule’!
