Nine reasons chocolate is good for us!

I

n celebration of Valentine’s Day this month, here are 9 reasons to tuck in: 1 It may help lower blood pressure. Flavanols found in cocoa beans aid production of nitric oxide, which stimulates blood vessels to dilate. One analysis of 850 mainly healthy participants found that flavanol-rich chocolate and cocoa products had a small but statistically significant effect in lowering blood pressure in the short term. 2 It might help to keep you smart. A nice mug of cocoa might also help an ageing brain, a recent study in the journal Hypertension found. Elderly participants who received high flavonol chocolate drinks had improved mental performance after eight weeks. 3 It doesn’t give you spots after all. This is a myth, as no one food that can cause acne, though there is some evidence that an unhealthy diet in general – high in refined carbohydrates, low in fruit and vegetables – may be a factor. Interestingly, both dark and milk chocolate have a relatively low glycaemic index, having a more favourable effect on blood sugar and insulin – and, potentially, your skin – than other sweet foods like sugary drinks or marshmallows. 4 It could help protect against heart attacks and strokes. Chocolate is high in saturated fat, but the particular type – stearic acid – predominant in cocoa butter does not raise cholesterol like other saturates. Research at Cambridge University found that people consuming the most chocolate had a 37% lower risk of heart disease and a 29% lower risk of stroke than those who consumed less chocolate. However, this “high” intake only amounted to 63g a week. Chocolate may be beneficial, but it should be eaten in a moderate way, not in large quantities and

6

not in binges. 5 It’s good for bones. This is where the sweeter, less cocoa-rich bars actually score better, as they count as a dairy-rich food that helps keep your bones strong. A small (50g) bar of white chocolate contains one sixth of the recommended daily allowance of calcium, and the same size bar of milk chocolate contains a little less. 6 It may fight PMS. Chocolate contains magnesium, which can help alleviate cramps and increase energy. As usual, however, it’s important not to overindulge. The best way to take advantage of its benefits is to limit yourself to a small amount – a couple of pieces. 7 It could boost levels of cancer protection. Spanish researchers studying rodents fed a diet containing 12% cocoa, found that it protected against the development of colon cancer. 8 It could help with chronic fatigue. A small study of 10 chronic fatigue patients carried out at Hull York Medical School, found that those given 45g of 85% cocoa chocolate daily reported less fatigue, anxiety and depression than those given placebo chocolate with low antioxidants. The researchers say larger studies are needed to confirm the findings. 9 It doesn’t (necessarily) make you fat. Strangely (and wonderfully), people who eat chocolate on a regular basis are, on average, actually thinner that those who don’t, an American study reported. How so? Nobody quite knows, but it might be that people who eat chocolate as part of a balanced diet are healthier than those who have occasional big chocolate binges. Unfortunately though, you can’t get round the fact there’s a whopping 270 plus calories in a titchy 50g bar. Hmmm.

Legal Matters

M

Nicola Dudley on the importance of getting your will right

aking a Will may seem a very simple exercise, especially if you do not consider your wishes to be especially complicated but it is easy to get it wrong. Not only could your estate pass to someone you would not wish to benefit, which would be distressing for your family, but your estate could end up paying more tax than it needs to. The law provides that if your Will contains a gift to your child (or their issue ie. grandchildren) and your child dies before you then, unless you provide otherwise in your Will, the issue will inherit. This may be what you want to happen but it may be that you would not want all your grandchildren or an adopted or step grandchild to benefit. If you have made gifts (of anything with a value, not just cash) during your lifetime then these gifts will not automatically be taken into account when dividing up your estate. For example, if you have given money to one of your children expecting them to take the amount into account when they inherit your estate (so that all your children will be treated equally, for example) they don’t have to and will ultimately have received more of your estate than their siblings. You can make sure that all lifetime gifts are taken into account on your death by including a “hotchpot” clause in your Will. If you leave a gift of a particular item (for example, your car) then the gift will be of the car that you own when you make the Will, which may not be the same as the car you own when you die. If you do not own the same car then the gift will fail unless you specify that it is to be the car that you own “at the date of your death”. When making a gift to a charity always check that it is a registered charity and if possible include its registered charity number in your Will. Sometimes part of an organization may be a charity and part

16

may not and it is important to make sure that your gift is to the charitable part. If the gift is not to a registered charity then it will not benefit from the Charity Exemption for Inheritance Tax, which will possibly result in more Inheritance Tax being due from your estate. Make sure you include your beneficiaries full and proper names (and their addresses) to make sure they can be identified. Imagine that someone who does not know you is administering your estate. Will they know who you mean? You may always have known someone by a “nick name”, which may not be their full legal name and they may not be able to identify themselves in order to claim their legacy if you have not included their proper names. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478, ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk.

Holistic Health

with Eleana Needham

Don’t go breaking my heart.... “How can it be that the results of one flawed skewed study could cause such far-reaching damage?

Y

ou know the drill: low-fat, lowsugar, low-fat, low-sugar, low-fat, low-sugar…. We have had this mantra rammed down our throats for the last 50-odd years. A whole industry of low-fat, low-sugar blossomed and burgeoned as a result, promising us slimmer figures, healthier hearts, lower cholesterol... So, why after over half a century of this are we facing the biggest cardio-vascular and obesity epidemic in the Western ‘civilised’ world? Take one flawed study: back in the 1950s a researcher called Ancel Keys produced a study which linked high saturated fat consumption with mortality from arteriosclerosis and degenerative heart disease. Cherry pick and manipulate data: Keys interestingly took data for his research ; from 22 countries, however, he only presented data from six – those that fitted his preconceived idea that a high consumption of saturated fats corresponds with a higher incidence of deaths from heart disease. Jump on the bandwagon: somewhere along the line Keys’ study was taken and quoted. But quotation and repetition of the suggestive association soon creates the impression that the relationship is truly valid and ultimately it acquires status as a supporting link in a chain of presumed proof: otherwise BLIND FAITH

22

in something that has no real scientific proof or backing. Enter low-fat, low-sugar: an enthusiastic public aided an abetted by glitzy advertising embraced the new shiny cure-all and fat became the new big baddie. Low fat foods became de-rigeur and ‘the skinny’ drinks and muffins have reined supreme alongside their tasteless brethren, the margarines, hydrogenated spreads, toothkinds and ‘sweet and lows’. Collateral Damage: So what happened? Why aren’t we all as skinny as Twiggy and as fit as Usain Bolt? Why are our waistlines expanding dangerously and more than ever people develop heart disease and associated vascular diseases like Alzheimer’s? Why do our children have more asthma, more eczema, more allergies, less energy? The fat of the land: The truth is we threw out the baby with the bathwater. There certainly are ‘bad fats’ but all fats got a bad rap sheet as a result of cleaver advertising, flawed science an blink faith. So all the lovely good fats which keep us healthy like organic butter from grass-fed animals, raw full-fat milk, raw cheese, good animal fat like beef dripping and lard as well as organic eggs became dirty words. Good fat in goof got replaced by cheap starches an even cheaper sugars which put stress on our liver (the liver is responsible for metabolizing

Please mention CONNECTION when responding to adverts

excess sugar into fat to be stored for leaner times), also causing a higher incidence of fatty liver disease once mainly the privilege of alcoholics) and making diabetes numbers skyrocket. And to top all this, we are now seeing a resurgence of rickets in young children. You know why? I will let you in on a secret: in order to metabolise calcium, our body needs magnesium and vitamin D. Do you know where you find vitamin D? In FATTY foods! So, for example, when you take the fat our of the milk, you take away the nutritional value this milk has for the body because without the vitamin D in the fat the body cannot metabolise the calcium efficiently: you might as well be drinking the carton the milk came in. The Crunch? So now you get a glimpse of what happened. We became malnourished and obesity is the body’s way of desperately trying to hold on to fat in the face of famine. We need

good fats in our diet to help keep our cells in good condition. Fats literally oil the works; they keep our blood flowing, they help the repair and maintenance of our cell walls, they keep our skin elastic and dewy. Our brain is about 60% fat! So eat your good fats as part of your balanced diet: animal fats from organically raised, grass fed animals, organic butters, full fat yoghurts, full fat milk, good quality oily fish, coconut oil, ghee, cold pressed seed and nut oils such as olive, hemp, linseed, avocado, nuts an seeds are also high in good fats. Feast on unprocessed, original foods with as few food miles as you can. And remember: read the packet ingredients! If it has more than five ingredients and especially if you can’t pronounce some of them, leave it on the shop shelf. Chances are your body won’t be able to pronounce it either!

Get Fit For Life! Have you fallen off the health and fitness wagon?

Y

our human it happens. Too many people put to much pressure on themselves to be perfect. I do this too, and it’s not helping anyone! Yes you need to be consistent over a long period of time if you want to make considerable changes in your physique, but we are not perfect. If you are over exercising or under eating you are more likely to fail. Most people fall of the wagon with eating, as they have a life and its not easy to be strict and cut things out. Its not health to cut everything out all the time. I don’t mean eat whatever you want when you want I mean you only life once, so look after yourself have a little bit of what you like and live your life. The key to any diet working is thermodynamics. Thermodynamics refers to energy balance. Which means to lose fat - calories intake must be lower than calories out. So if your calorie in and calories out are the same, your weight will remain stable, and then if calorie intake outweighs calories burn, you’ll put on weight. This is true no matter what style of diet and eating plan you follow!! You could even live off lettuce and put on fat if you ate enough of it. I believe the trick is to be flexible with you’re eating, meaning eat what you like, but just eat sensible amounts. Calories are used and processed differently but the rule is a calorie is still a calorie!! The confusing bit is that macronutri-

26

ents (protein, carbs and fats) have slightly different thermic effects. This refers to how many calories are burnt off in the digestion process. Being flexible promotes having a healthy macronutrient split, as you don’t have to cut things out. You work out what fits you’re body to hit your goals. Try and tailor your eating to your needs by looking at the amounts of protein, fats and carbohydrates you need to hit goals. Your body recognizes and tracks calories and macronutrients, even if you don’t actually do it yourself. The key to a calorie deficit if you were trying to loss weight, is eating enough protein. Protein is the most important macronutrient because you need it to preserve muscle mass when dieting. Protein has the highest thermic effect of any macronutrient, meaning that around 20-30% of the calories are burnt off in the digestion process, and a higher intake is much more satiating. Usually 1g per pound of body weight would be enough for the most regular exercisers but you can have less. Contact me if you need help working out your macronutrients, so that its easier for you to keep on track with your goals. Flipping mad: Ten surprising Pancake Day facts We’ve taken a look at some of the most surprising pancake facts in celebration of this age-old tradition

O

n February 12th in kitchens across the country, mums and dads will be flipping pancakes in an age-old tradition. Pancake or Shrove Tuesday is something that’s part of our psyche. And the idea of eating pancakes on the day before Ash Wednesday is over 1,000 years old. Many don’t realise that the reason for this was, in the days before chocolate and crisps, making pancakes was a way of using up rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before the fasting season of Lent. In religious terms, the 40 days of Lent meant eating plainer food and refusing meals that would give pleasure. In many cultures this means no meat, dairy or eggs. We’ve taken a look at some of the most surprising pancake facts in celebration of this age-old tradition. 1. The first recorded pancake race was in Olney, Buckinghamshire in England in 1445. 2. The first pancake recipe appeared in an English cookbook in the 15th century. And it’s a tradition that continues all over England. It is said to have originated in Olney as a housewife was so busy making pancakes that she forgot the time. When she heard the church bells ringing for mass she ran out of her house, still carrying her pan and pancake. Olney still has a pancake race every year. 3. The largest number of pancakes tossed in the shortest amount of time is 349 tosses in two minutes, which was

28

achieved by Dean Gould at Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1995. 4. The longest race in the quickest time was held in Melbourne, Australia. Jan Stickland covered 384m in 59.5 seconds on 19 February 1985. 5. The largest pancake ever made and flipped measured 15.01m wide, 2.5cm deep and weighed 3 tonnes. It was made in Rochdale, Greater Manchester during August 1994. 6. It is customary in France to touch the handle of the frying pan and make a wish while the pancake is turned, holding a coin in one hand. 7. On Pancake Day in Newfoundland, Canada people place items in the pancake batter before it is cooked to tell the future for family members. If it happens that boy receives item for a trade, it means he will enter the trade but if a girls receives item from a trade, it means she will marry a person from trade. 8. Maple Syrup was originally a sweet drink, discovered by the Algonquin Indians who collected sap from Canadian sugar maple trees and then boiled to produce the delicious beverage. 9. The first ready-made pancake mix sold commercially was Aunt Jemima pancake flour. It was invented in 1889 in St. Joseph, Missouri. It wasn’t very popular at the beginning. 10. Pancake Tuesday is known as Carnivale in Italy which comes from the Latin for ‘goodbye to the flesh’.
