Valentine’s Day Traditions Around the World Italy: Originally, Italians celebrated Valentine’s Day as the Spring Festival. The young and amorous gathered outside in gardens and tree arbors to enjoy poetry readings and music before taking a stroll with their beloved. Today on Valentine’s Day Italians prefer having romantic dinners and exchanging gifts. Also, there is a tradition of giving chocolate to loved ones and Italians believe that in this case, size does matter – the bigger the chocolate, the stronger the love you will have. France: The French like to think of themselves as the most romantic people in the world, and it’s often claimed on Gallic shores that the first Valentine’s Day card originated in France when Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent love letters to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. Estonia: Valentine’s Day celebrations in Estonia have their own twist: February 14 is called “Friend’s Day”, so single, lovelorn people don’t feel left out. That means everyone’s a winner thanks to nice presents offered between friends and family members. On this day single people also get the chance to take a ride on a special ‘love bus’ where they can meet others looking for love. Japan: Japanese Valentine’s tradition switches traditional gender roles around, with women often presenting chocolates to men instead of vice versa. March 14th is then a day when men return the favor with white chocolate, which is why the March holiday is known as ‘White Day’.

6

Ghana: Though Ghanaians have adopted many of the same Valentine’s traditions as other parts of the world, since 2007, Feb.14 has also been known as ‘National Chocolate Day’ in Ghana, one of the world’s largest cocoa exporters. The move, which aims to promote Ghana’s contribution to chocolate production through museum exhibits and special chocolate-themed restaurant menus, was pushed by the country’s tourism ministry as a means of attracting visitors to the West African nation. Philippines: One Valentine’s Day tradition that has become increasingly popular in the Philippines is the mass w e d d i n g celebration, which brings together hundreds of couples in large, open spaces across the country to be married in a colossal public ceremony. Around 4,000 couples were married in Valentine’s Day mass wedding ceremonies in 2013 South Africa: Some young South Africans celebrate Valentine’s Day by pinning the name of their sweetheart to their sleeve, in a tradition that is known in the country as Lupercalia, in reference to the ancient Roman fertility festival that preceded Valentine’s Day in the West. Saudi Arabia: Perhaps the only country in the world where Valentine’s day is banned. In 2008 Saudi officials told florists and gift shops to remove all red items until after Valentine’s Day, calling the celebration of such a holiday a sin as it ‘encourages immoral relations between unmarried men and women’.

Nicola Dudley on Stamp Duty Land Tax and Trusts

ou may have read recently in the press about the Treasury’s proposals to levy Stamp Duty Land Tax (or SDLT) on second properties and although it is clear that this will effect those intending to purchase a second home it will also effect trust arrangements and Inheritance Tax planning. When will the new tax apply? It is proposed that an addition 3% SDLT be charged on the purchase of a second residential property on purchases where the contract was entered into on or after 26th November 2015 and completion takes place after 1st April 2016. This is the case whether the buyer is resident in the UK or not. How will it work? Cohabiting married couples and civil partners will only be able to own one main residence between them. So an individual will be liable to the additional SDLT if their spouse/civil partner or any minor child has an existing residential property. An additional property purchased as a furnished holiday let will also be chargeable. It is not clear how the tax would apply if two or more people purchase a property together if it were a first purchase for any of them. The tax may apply to the whole of the purchase price or just the proportion purchased by a buyer with another property. Problems for Trusts Beneficiaries who have an interest for their lifetimes in a second property will be liable for the additional tax. Moreover, it is proposed that the purchase of a property by Trustees of a trust will be liable to the surcharge whatever the circumstances. It may be that HM Revenue & Customs will not consider a property purchased by a discretionary trust to be subject to the additional tax but this is not yet clear.

10

When does the new tax NOT apply? • The new proposals do not apply if you sell your existing main residence as long as it is sold within 18 months of the purchase of the new property. If there is any doubt as to whether a property is your “main residence” then HM Revenue & Customs will decide. • If you live in rented accommodation, the purchase of a property as an investment will not attract the additional SDLT. So there are still Inheritance Tax planning opportunities available without incurring additional SDLT but care will be needed. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0345 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk PWT Advice LLP charge fixed fees and provide full Inheritance Tax planning advice with even our basic Wills. A Little Bit of Pancake Trivia

S

hrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Day) is on Tuesday 9th February this year. Get your frying pans at the ready, crack those eggs and beat those whisks - it's that time of year again. We love it, the kids love it, just about everyone loves it! It's the one day a year when the whole world goes pancake crazy, flipping, tossing and filling pancakes in kitchens all around the UK. Pancakes: Did you know...? • Pancakes were originally invented as a way of using up all the leftover fatty and rich foods before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. Whoever thought of that idea is a genius! • The most flips anyone has ever done with a pancake is 349 flips in 2 minutes, which set the bar pretty high as far as world records go. Good luck to anyone who tries to beat that!

• The largest stack of pancakes was made up of 60 huge pancakes and measured an impressive 76cm tall, which broke the Guinness World Records in 2012. • Archaeological evidence suggests that pancakes date back to prehistoric times (yes, when dinosaurs ruled the earth) as one of the earliest and widespread cereal foods known! We

14

wonder if the dinosaurs got in on the pancake action? • It is estimated that us Brits use a staggering 52 million eggs come Pancake Day, which is 22 million more than on a regular day. • The most watched pancake related video on YouTube is of cartoon character Pingu and his family making pancakes. It's been watched over 10 million times and counting. • The biggest pancake ever made measured a whopping 15 metres long and weighed 3 tonnes. Woah! Made in Rochdale in 1994, this pancake was estimated to contain a whopping two million calories! • The largest pancake ever flipped measured 15 metres in diameter! Did they use a crane or something?! • One of the oldest pancake traditions takes place in Olney, Buckinghamshire, and dates back to 1445. On Shrove Tuesday, at the sound of the church bell, local housewives race with their pancake and frying pan to the church. This tradition still carries on today and the Olney pancake race has become one of the most famous pancake races in the world!

arpet Care Plus is a family business owned and operated by Steve Barnett. Based in Walton on the Hill, we cover the whole of Surrey. We offer a specialist carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning service, incorporating leather cleaning, rug cleaning, stain removal and anti-stain protection treatments. In addition we also clean, restore and seal a wide range of hard floor tiled surfaces, including Marble, Limestone, Granite, Ceramic and Porcelain. This year we celebrate 35 years in the carpet industry. This knowledge and experience, combined with top of the range equipment, enables us to offer outstanding cleaning results at competitive prices. Carpets are an expensive purchase so it makes sense to maintain them on a regular basis. Regular vacuuming is fine for surface cleaning of the pile, however, you should consider professional carpet cleaning every year for deep cleaning of your carpets. Carpets act like a filter, grabbing hold of grit, soil, dust mites and dead skin cells. Think of all the surfaces that you wouldn’t think twice about cleaning regularly – your kitchen floor, work surfaces, bathroom tiles – and yet the surface that we walk 20

across every day often gets neglected, sometimes for years. Traffic lanes build up in the heavy wear areas and the grit at the bottom of the pile acts like sandpaper, wearing away at the fibres. The hot water extraction method of cleaning that we use will clean to the base of the pile, leaving your carpets soft to the touch and smelling fresh. In addition to our cleaning services, we also supply and fit new carpets to a high standard. We will visit you with samples and carry out a full measure and survey. We will discuss the logistics of moving furniture and plan the work to your convenience. Vacuuming newly laid carpets and removing our rubbish from the job is all part of the service. If you have had a bad experience previously of using carpet retailers, then maybe it’s time to treat yourself and employ the services of a specialist carpet company. You will be amazed at the difference in customer service, attention to detail and quality of installation. So for all your cleaning, restoration and new carpet requirements call Steve Barnett at Carpet Care Plus on 07768 648863 for your FREE survey and quotation. Our existing clients can vouch for our trustworthiness, friendly customer service and first class cleaning results.

Get Fit For Life!

D

Are you still carrying round extra weight from Christmas? Personal trainer Jade Parsons has the answer

iets are short term but healthy eating is for life. Eating food that you like which is good for you food and burning fat simultaneously sounds nearly impossible, but it’s not. Decreasing the amount of calories you consume in a day or a week because of a diet, and doing more active things is will help, but it has been proven that this is not actually enough for someone looking to shed a fair bit of body fat in a year. The reason is the continuous change in what are bodies really need to function. Insulin is an important hormone your body produces after eating sugar. Insulin converts sugar into cells that is used for energy and it will store the sugar for a later time. SUGAR = ENERGY But the big problem is when you don’t use that energy, most people eat too much sugar to use all the energy it proves our bodies. SUGAR = FAT Sugar can become addictive and there are lots of reasons to watch our intake. Sugar causes cravings and that causes us to eat more. It can increase the production of insulin and then make the body more resistant to the effects of insulin so we produce more!! We then crave more, which leads to over consumption and getting fat! What to do? Easy thing is to cut sugar out. Yes it’s hard but we can start with baby steps. Start with thinking about Processed

26

foods being cut or only enjoyed as “cheat meals.” By having a “cheat meal” it can allow your body to maintain balanced insulin levels but still burning more fat as they are no longer being stored. Another thing is not to buy the stuff! Don’t add sugar to things when its not actually needed. Tea, coffee and cereals do not need sugar and if you can’t have it without adding sugar just don’t have it! Simple. Don’t drink sugar, I don’t drink fizzy drinks and the only reason is I like sugar! I would rather save myself and have some chocolate then waste my sugar intake on a drink. Its worse for you in everyway and most people are doing it to excess. Your weight accounts for bone density, muscle mass, fat, water weight, and much more so the scale is not always the answer. This does not mean your bones got heavier over Christmas! Losing weight very quickly is not the answer; focus on fat loss not weight, think about doing more and eating less sugar. I know it is easier said than done but we can all make one change. Also its not always about us, think of the others around you and how your eating and health might be affecting them? Relax and keep everything simple! CALL Jade on 07564525351 for personal training and nutrition guidance or email: jadeptraining@hotmail.com I do home training and work at Twist Gym, Kingswood.
