Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree! Selecting a tree Get a healthy tree - Don't buy a tree that is losing green needles, or has dry, brittle twigs or a sour, musty smell. Excessive needle loss can be detected by vigorously shaking the tree, or dropping it onto the end of the trunk several times from a height of about 1 ft. The tree should have a good fragrance and an attractive green color, fresh tree will retain its moisture content and thereby keep its fragrance and needles, if kept in a stand that has a good water holding capacity. Limbs should be strong enough to hold ornaments and strings of lights. The needles should be resilient. Take hold of a branch about six inches from the tip, between your thumb and forefinger, then pull your hand toward you allowing the branch to slip through your fingers. Bottom of the tree - Note the location of large branches at the bottom. Be sure that the handle is long enough to allow display of the tree without cutting off the lower large branches.

Storing the tree before bringing it in the house Keep out of the sunlight - Do not leave a cut Christmas tree lying in the sunshine, especially if warm. Fresh trees will dry rapidly. Keep it in water - Stand it in a bucket of water in a cool, shaded location, either indoors or outdoors.

Setting up the tree in a stand

Cut off a disk of wood about 0.5 to 1 inch (1.25 to 2.5 cm) thick from the base of the trunk immediately before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Do not cut at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree plumb in the stand, and reduces

6

the amount of water available to the tree. Do not bruise the end of the trunk or get it dirty. Use a stand that fits your tree. Some stands have circular rings at the top, so the ring must be large enough so the trunk goes through the hole. Other stands are open, which allows more range in trunk size. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed. Use a stand with an adequate water holding capacity for the tree. Using stands that are too small is a very common mistake. The stand should hold enough water to last 24 hours.

Watering your tree

Always keep the tree stand filled with cold water. Dried sap will form a seal over the cut stump within several hours if the water level falls below the base of the tree. If this occurs, make another fresh cut in the butt-end and promptly fill the stand with water. Use hot tap water which will soften sap and facilitate absorption. How much water - A tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the 24 hours after it is cut, and one litre everyday after. Maintaining a steady water level prevents the needles from drying out and dropping off and the boughs from drooping. Water will also keep the tree fragrant. Do not allow the water pan to empty or go below the tree base.

Get Fit For Life! Personal trainer Jade Parsons explains why nutrition and training work so well together

N

utrition and training work together, so regardless of your goals you will see less results and even nonexistent results if you are not giving enough attention to both of these areas. We should all eat healthily and exercise every day, but take into account the reality of life! So yes its Christmas, but that doesn’t mean you need to forget exercise or forget to eat healthily whilst enjoying all the Christmas goodies. Nutrition and training are both still important NOW as well as in the New Year! Plan your nutrition and training: At certain stages of a program or goal, I think paying more attention on one thing over the other will help with larger improvements in your bodies’ health and goals. At the beginning of most goals nutrition is far more important than training hard and should become your number one priority! This is because if you are doing everything else right but still eating lots of processed fats and refined sugars, you wont see the results. If you cut these out and try replacing them with good fats, you will make an enormous and noticeable difference in your physique very quickly. We gain weight when we eat more calories than we expend. In order to lose one pound of fat, we must create a 3,500-calorie deficit, which can be achieved either through exercise and or diet. But sometimes if we exercise too much we can still over eat as you think you are burning more calories than you

14

are. The muscular and nervous systems of a beginner are unaccustomed to exercise. This means it may be hard to start and keep going sometimes as it feels like too much. But you must stick with it, it does get easier! Any training in the gym, at home or classes can cause muscle growth and strength development to occur because it's all a "shock" to the untrained body. Water is the most important nutrient and yet it’s usually overlooked. Water and fluids are essential to keep the body hydrated and at the right temperature. Your body can lose several liters of sweat in an hour of vigorous exercise. So getting enough water will help with every goal. Easy tip is to make sure you drink plenty of fluids with every meal, whether you will be exercising, or not. Please remember that keeping your body weight too low, losing weight too quickly, or preventing weight gain in an unnatural way can have negative health effects. People are always to hard on them selves, even me. It leads to craving bad stuff, or wanting to give up so be sensible about it. Its important to set realistic body weight goals. It’s not a race! Take one-step at a time, or you will only just put the weight back on and be unhealthy. Charity Focus

S

December 16th is first National Local Charities Day established to celebrate local charities. Here we focus on Sensory Services by Sight For Surrey

ensory Services by Sight for Surrey is the largest charitable organisation in Surrey working with people who are visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing or who have combined sight and hearing loss. The charity has provided support to the blind and partially sighted community since 1922. It began to deliver services to the deaf and hard of hearing in February 2016. Its mission is to help anyone whose eyesight or hearing has become a cause for concern, whether they are registered with a sight impairment or not, to help them lead full and independent lives. To achieve this a wide range of services is provided to vision impaired people and their carers: • A team of Communicator Guides provide specialist support to anyone with a combined sight and hearing loss and enable them to get out and about. • A team of specialist Hearing Loss Advisors offer support in managing hearing loss and ensure the right support and guidance is provided. • Mobility and life skills training to children and young people. • A team of qualified social workers and Deaf community officers work with amily and carers. • A strong team of volunteers befriend and support our members. • Specialist technology training is provided at all levels. • The charity is present at hospital eye clinics to advise and support the newlydiagnosed with eye disease. • Innovative projects including children’s recreational trips and an

18

Employment Club provide mentoring to people with a vision impairment in the workplace or who are seeking employment. The staff have a real understanding of the practical and emotional aspects of living with hearing and sight loss. Volunteers are at the heart of everything the charity does to support and empower people with a vision impairment to live independent and full lives. Becoming a Sight for Surrey volunteer can be a rewarding way to reach out to people in your community and unlock your own potential. If you speak to people who already volunteer they will tell you they do it because they love it. So why not help people who have a vision impairment or combined sight and hearing loss and have fun at the same time? Sight for Surrey offers training, support and reimbursement of out of pocket expenses to all volunteers. All volunteers are DBS checked and references are taken. Regular catch up meetings are held across the county, inVOLve, a newsletter is produced specifically for volunteers, an annual award ceremony is held and ideas and feedback are solicited on how support for volunteers can be improved. If you are interested in finding out more about these fulfilling roles and would like an informal chat to discuss the volunteering opportunities, please contact Sight for Surrey’s Helpdesk on 01372 377701 or email volunteering@sightforsurrey.org.uk

Legal Matters

T

Nicola Dudley on the responsibilities of being an Executor

he death of a loved one can be a traumatic experience, especially if you have been appointed as their Executor and are having to deal with the practicalities of administering their estate. An Executor has responsibilities and liabilities and acting as an Executor is not straightforward as it is easy to make mistakes. Before deciding whether to instruct a professional to assist, an Executor should consider the following:Liability to Beneficiaries – if you cause loss to the estate you will be liable to the beneficiaries. For example, if you misinterpret the Will. Duty to exercise Care and Skill – this is a duty laid down by statute and professional Executors have a more onerous duty than a lay Executor. Personal Liability for Acts and Omissions – if you act reasonably your expenses can be recovered from the estate assets. Even though you will be personally liable for the cost of any professional you engage e.g. Estate Agents fees, you can recover the charges from the estate. If there are insufficient assets, however, then the Executor is personally responsible for any shortfall. Debts – if an Executor distributes the estate to the beneficiaries without discharging all the outstanding debts then they will be personally liable even if they didn't receive any of the estate themselves. They may also be personally liable to a beneficiary’s creditors if they pay a legacy to a beneficiary who is bankrupt. Inland Revenue (HMRC) – Executors are personally responsible for completing selfassessment tax returns for the period of the estate administration, both for Inheritance Tax, Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. Any penalties incurred as a result of failing to complete returns or pay tax on time may not be recoverable from the estate and may be due from the

20

Executor personally. Duty to Account - Executors have a duty to keep accounts and if they do not have relevant experience they are also under a duty to instruct a competent person to prepare them. The beneficiaries are entitled to see the accounts and the Court could order that accounts are prepared if they are not forthcoming. Protection – there is some! Executors can advertise for creditors of the estate and will not be personally liable to any creditors who miss the deadline for a claim, they can be relieved from personal liability for breach of trust or duty (but this involves a Court process) and they can take steps to identify missing beneficiaries to protect themselves against any claims once the administration is complete. Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk. Fun at Christmas! Ideas for parlour games at Christmas Remembering Christmas Gather up about 25 small objects related to Christmas and put them on a tray. Put the tray in the center of the room and give people three minutes to study the items. Then remove the tray, give everyone a paper and pencil and see who can come up with the most items. Christmas snooze Put a folded slip of paper for each person in a bowl; on one slip, write the word "elf." Have a lighted candle or other small light to put in the center of the room or table, or use the light of the Christmas tree. Turn off all other lights. Each person draws a slip of paper, and the one who gets the "elf" is it. He must slowly and secretly wink at another member of the party. That member then falls asleep. The object is for other people to guess who the elf is before everyone can be put to sleep. Take turns guessing, but there should also be a penalty for an incorrect guess, such as having to skip a turn. If the elf can put everyone to sleep before his identity is discovered, he wins a prize. If not, put the papers back in the bowl and let someone else be the elf. What's in the stocking? Fill an oversized Christmas stocking with a number of holiday objects. You can use things like holly, tape, pine cones, candy canes, Christmas ornaments, etc. Close the top, so you can't see inside. Pass the stocking around and let everyone feel it. Then give them a piece of paper to write down as many objects as they can. The one with the most correct answers wins. Candy Cane Relay You need two inflated balloons and two

22

candy canes. Divide into two teams and decide on a common goal line. Each team lines up. The object is to balance the balloon on the candy cane and carry it across the goal line and back. If the balloon falls off, it must be replaced before the person can continue on. The first team to get their members across the line and back wins. Santa’s Helpers Divide the players into teams of two. Give each a present and wrapping materials. The object is to be the first team to get their present wrapped. But there's a catch. Each person can use only one hand; the other must be held behind the back. To get the job done, team members will have to communicate and work together. The Blind Cook The player has a large spoon, a bowl of marshmallows and a blindfold. The player must put on the blindfold and try to transfer as many marshmallows as he can to another bowl during a one minute time limit. When his time is up, tally up the marshmallows and then the next player gets a turn. After all players have had a try, the one who scooped the most marshmallows wins — and everyone gets to eat the marshmallows.
