Top 10 toys on your childrens’ Christmas 2015 wishlist 1. Toot-Toot Friends Busy Sounds Discovery Home, £45 This big interactive house has seven 'MagicPoints' where the Miss Nora doll will talk, sing, light up and move to encourage imaginative play. 2. Disney Frozen Sing-A-Long Elsa, £39 This year Elsa is singing her heart out – and is ready for the perfect duet – as the clever microphone can recognise who's singing. Put the mic near Elsa's mouth to hear her belt out 'Let It Go' then take it off her – she'll stop singing and start playing just the music so your child can do her best solo. She lights up and is fabulous too – because Elsa's still got it. 3. LEGO City Deep Sea Exploration Vessel, £80 This Lego set comes with SO many great bits – from the sub and scuba scooter to the white shark, swordfish and octopus – the detail is amazing. The winch system works to lower the exploratory submarine into the water and you can put your bravest minifigure in the shark cage. 4. Little Live Pets Cleverkeet, £60 Get this – it’s a parrot you can teach to talk, sing, dance and swing on a perch. Just like the real thing – but with a microchip. 5. Lego Star Wars Kylo Ren's Command Shuttle, £100 This highly-detailed Starship has loads of features: the front opens, it has rear and bottom storage bays and spring-loaded shooters. Just for recreating scenes from Star Wars: The Force Awakens though, definitely NOT for firing at little sisters. 6. Thunderbirds – Interactive Tracy Island, £80 This brand new 2015 version boasts smart

6

technology, to go with the new CGI TV series, so the island knows which craft is launching and has 40 action and rescue sounds, plus a wearable communicator. Be warned however. You need to buy the rescue vehicles and action figures separately – the rockets cost from £10 to £40, while Virgil and brothers cost £8 each. 7. Paw Patrol Paw Patroller, £60 Fans of the Nick Jr show Paw Patrol will love this big rescue vehicle. The Paw Patroller comes with Ryder and his ATV vehicle and can hold 3 Paw Patrol vehicles inside or display 6 vehicles when open. 8. Pie Face, £20 Forget Monopoly, this messy game is bound to be a Christmas Day hit. Just put some whipped cream or a wet sponge on the hand and start turning the handles. But be warned – it could go off at any time! 9. Star Wars Bladebuilders Jedi Master Lightsaber, £50 This has to be the ULTIMATE lightsaber. It comes with a main lightsaber with lights and sounds but also has two independently-lit light daggers, an expansion hilt, two elbow connectors, a dual connector, and a cross connector. Just make sure they don't swing it about near anything breakable. 10. Star Wars The Force Awakens Millennium Falcon, £120 This massive Millennium Falcon opens up into a playset for the Chewbacca, Finn and BB-8 figures that are included. It also has a pop-up blaster that fires Nerf Elite darts – what more could you want?

Get Fit For Life!

M

Will there be more of you after the festive season? Personal trainer Jade Parsons shows you how to make a new start

any people get demoralised when year after year they make resolutions that they keep for only a few weeks or maybe even just a few days. There are mistakes that people tend to make before they even start to make their New Year resolutions! Usually they think about what they "should" do, rather than what they really want to do. I would always recommend fitness and health to be someone’s resolution, so here are a few steps I think will help. 1. Choose a resolution that you really want to achieve and you must be realistic! Then write this down a few times and stick it in places around the house as motivation and a little push! 2. You could do your goal with someone else, which will encourage you to stick to it, or book in to a course or classes. You could even get a personal trainer to help you reach your goals. 3. Think of it as a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. I would try to do some body measurements or weight targets, this is so that you have a number to work towards. You are more likely to succeed if you have confidence in your exercise ability, so make sure you ask for help if you need it. A New Year resolution doesn’t need to be weight related. I think the New Year is about feeling better, and there are lots of other things to make you a feel better that do not include having to

16

lose weight or join a gym. Why not look at other things to do with your health. Two things I think are worth talking about areCOFFEE I love coffee and I think I need to make it a goal of mine to drink less. In the UK coffee has replaced tea now and too much caffeine has been linked with increasing stress, poor sleep and long term heart diseases. It’s now said to be a global addiction! Over all its not harmful for most people but it affects people differently. I know I would like to stop relying on a high stimulant. ALCOHOL can be poisonous, addictive and overall a bad thing for most people. We all know having too much is bad for someone and I don’t need to say it. Also the recommended glass is just an average so we don’t really know how it’s affecting our bodies. The calories in alcohol can be very confusing, which could easily be making you unhealthy and gain extra fat. Even if you believe that alcohol has possible health benefits ‘you can really have too much of a good thing’. Maybe add this to a New Year plan? Winter-proofing your home, part 2

T

he days are getting shorter and colder, which means Jack Frost is at your door and he’s looking to freeze your pipes and give you the flu as an early Christmas gift. Fortunately, here are some tips that’ll keep you warm and protect your home from the jaws of winter. Guttering As summer draws to a close, the leaves will start falling, and gutters and drainpipes will start to get filled with loose foliage. Once the blockage becomes too much, water will start to back up in the guttering and leak into the roof and down the walls of the house. Make sure your gutters are completely free from grime and dirt to minimise water blockage. Tree trimming You know who’s to blame for your guttering getting clogged up with leaves? It’s those trees, making a mess of your house and getting away with it. Take a stand against them and get them trimmed away from the house. This will reduce the amount of foliage that will drop into the guttering, and will also reduce the build-up of snow on the tree that could cause damage from broken branches. No entry for draughts Those chilly winter breezes are wily things, and they’ll try everything they can to slip through the nooks and crannies of your home. Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and you can either seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips, or get one of those funny draught

24

excluders shaped like a snake or a dog. Bonus tips Stock up on hot chocolate. It doesn’t matter if it’s pouring down with freezing cold rain, in the middle of a blizzard or gale force winds, sitting down on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate in winter is one of the best feelings ever. Keep blinds and curtains closed to make sure you don't lose warmth through the windows. Be prepared for a power cut - with candles, matches and torches to hand. Don't forget to check the batteries! Ordinary household salt and warm water will unblock a frozen drain - fast. Keeping the hatch to your attic ajar will stop overhead pipes and tanks freezing. Protect your indoor pipes when you're out - keep the central heating on low, and leave internal doors open. Going away? Shut off the outside taps and drain any standing water to avoid outside pipes bursting. No hot water? There are a few simple checks you can carry out: Check the boiler to see if the pilot light is lit. To re-light it, follow the instructions in the manual or on the side of the boiler. Make sure there's power going to the boiler by checking all switches are on. Try a new fuse in the plug. Also, check the hot water thermostat is on, and set high enough. If you're still faced with cold water, it's time to call in a professional. Ahead of the freeze, put a tennis ball in a fish pond - then remove it to let oxygen into the water. Keep a supply of salt for clearing ice off your paths.

Nicola Dudley on inheritance tax planning for businesses

hen making your Will there are some particularly important Inheritance Tax planning aspects to bear in mind if you own your own business or shares in your own company. Shareholders and Cross Option Agreements Have you considered what would happen to your shares on your death? If your current Will leaves your estate to your spouse or partner then that gift will include your shares or interest in your business. Your spouse may not wish to be involved in the business or you may intend that the business be carried on after your death by someone other than your spouse or children. It is possible to provide in a Shareholders or Cross Option Agreement that any shares you own when you die are immediately offered to the other shareholders so as to ensure that the business continues on your death. The agreement can provide that they pay your estate the market value for the shares and then the value, rather than the shares themselves, will pass to your family via your Will. In order to ensure that the other shareholders have sufficient funds with which to purchase the shares from your estate it is advisable to put in place “Key Man life insurance on your life. The proceeds of the policy should be payable to the shareholders rather than to your estate. Business Property Relief You should check whether your business interest qualifies for Inheritance Tax Business Property Relief at either 100% or 50%. If it does then you can gift the qualifying aspect of your business interest into a trust in your Will for the benefit of your family (or gift it absolutely other than to your spouse or civil partner). This will potentially save 40% of the value of your

32

interest on your spouse’s death by removing the value from their estate whilst not incurring any immediate charge to Inheritance Tax on your death. Lifetime Inheritance Tax Planning If you are nearing retirement you may wish to consider reorganising your company shares and gifting your interest over time during your lifetime so as to remove the value from your estate. This needs careful consideration of the law relating to companies and to both the Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax implications. Lasting Power of Attorney As well as considering what would happen to your business on your death you should also make provision for someone to look after your business interests in the event that you loose either physical or mental capacity. You can put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and appoint someone specifically to run the business for you if you are unable to do so.
