Get Fit For Life!

Personal trainer Jade Parsons on the benefits of interval training

nterval training is used in most exercises the best way to describe it is a mix of low to high intensities all linked together. Interval training will involve a different numbers of high and low intensity intervals for all over the body; this might also have different lengths of time for each interval. This type of exercise allows you to burn more calories in a shorter period of time and should improve your aerobic capability at a faster rate. It’s not easy as it is not for everyone. You must remember to think of your healthy and safety first. It is very hard on the body, so think about your limitations and what you should and shouldn’t be doing. This type of training is not for beginners, people with cardiovascular problems or other risk factors. If you are a beginner I would recommend you try a circuit class first before you do this to see if your body can keep up with a quick change of pace. There are different types of names and approaches for most interval training. It is all really along the same lines just adjusted different ability’s. Some just call it circuits, others just interval training and then it can be called HIT which is high interval training, HIIT, which means high intensity interval training. This type of training with bursts of harder exercises or move intense moves may be more effective at fat loss than moderate intensity training. This is

14

because your heart rate will change; your body will not be able to plateau as it would not have had time to get used to the exercise. This should increase your metabolism. It will help improve your all over fitness and performance. You must build your stamina with cardio workouts before adding interval training to your routine. The exercises should be training and conditioning both your anaerobic and aerobic energy systems. It will increase the amount of calories you burn compared to a normal gym session or workout once your have built your stamina up. A session like this should not be done everyday and should be an added plan to any exercise routine if possible. How to plan a simple interval workout at home: Choose a group of exercise like step-ups, squats, jump squats, jumping jacks, push-ups, running on the spot, mountain climbers on the floor and basic crunches. Then set a timer that should go off every 20,30 or 40 seconds give you self a rest period of 20-40 seconds as well and choose when fits you. You should try to repeat 3-4 times. Once you are able to do this you can make this harder by adding less rest, weights or harder exercises like the lovely burpes. Please remember to take your time and rest when your body needs it, listen to you body and never over do it! Legal Matters

Solicitor Nicola Dudley explains the two types of powers of attorney

asting Powers of Attorney are legal documents that allow you to appoint someone to make decisions for you in respect of your financial arrangements or health. There are two types of Lasting Power and you can have both or either of them. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney there is no one, neither your spouse, parents, siblings or children who will legally be allowed to make decisions on your behalf should you be unable to make them due to mental or physical incapacity. The time to consider making a Lasting Power is not when you think that you may be losing your capacity but whilst you know that you still have mental capacity. Without this document someone, and it does not have to be someone you know, can make an application to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy and they will then be able to make decisions for you. The person appointed might not be someone you would have chosen yourself and the process is long and expensive. Lasting Powers give you the opportunity to make your own choices and decisions and to provide a degree of comfort to your relatives in knowing that there will be someone who will be able to help you should the need arise. Like an insurance policy, you may never need them but if you do they will be invaluable. If you are considering Lasting Powers of Attorney, here are some matters to consider:• Who to appoint? You can appoint anyone over the age of 18 who is not bankrupt and who has mental capacity themselves. You can appoint more than one person. If you appoint more than one • person you can choose whether they are to act together or independently of each other.

18

• What if they can’t act? You can also appoint Replacement Attorneys. • What will they be able to do? Anything that you can but restrictions, guidance and conditions can be included. • Does anyone else need to be involved? You will need someone to |confirm that you have capacity, that you know what you are signing and that you have not been put under any pressure to sign. This person can be a friend or a professional. • You can choose to notify someone that you are signing the Lasting Power. Everyone should have a Lasting Power of Attorney! Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Dudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 833 9025 or 07900 931478 ndudley@pwtadvice.co.uk

Make Your Chimney safe this Autumn

Part 2 of Advice from the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) on maintaining a safe chimney.

N

ACS Chimney Sweeps are very mindful and conscious of making as little mess as possible, and are in fact trained in the prevention of dust escaping during sweeping. Normally Chimney Sweeps will need a clear passage to the chimney and adequate space to work in. They may suggest you clear any ornaments from the hearth and mantelpiece, and perhaps you could clear the grate of any fuel, ash or rubbish etc before the sweep arrives. Gas and oil flues will also need to be swept. It is essential that all flues are kept clean and clear of debris and vermin nests. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have just moved house, then it is important you have your chimney swept as soon as possible as you may not necessarily know when it was last cleaned properly by a professional Chimney Sweep. Always ensure you receive a NACS Certificate of Chimney Sweeping. Your Chimney Sweep will also provide advice on your Chimney, heating appliances, what fuels to use, and the best practice for fuel storage.

26

Chimney Sweeps that are Members of the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) undertake an extensive training program and have to successfully complete a full assessment prior to becoming and trading as a NACS Member. All NACS Members must hold valid insurance for Chimney Sweeping, of which they provide a copy of to the Association on an annual basis. They must also have the correct equipment to be able to undertake the job which is checked at the time of their assessment. You can search for a NACS Chimney Sweep in your area by visiting the NACS website www.nacs.org.uk. NACS Chimney Sweeps are: All trained and qualified Fully insured Issue an Industry Standard Certificate of Chimney Sweeping for every Chimney cleaned Follow the Industry Standard Code of Practice Able to inspect and survey Chimneys using CCTV equipment. Go to www.nacs.org.uk for further information.

How to carve a Jack O’ Lantern

A

well carved pumpkin will impress your friends, neighbours and best of all, you're trick-or-treaters! Carving a pumpkin into a Jack-O'-Lantern freehand is the traditional way of doing it, it is very easy and only takes a few basic tools. These include a large spoon or ice-cream scoop, a thin bladed knife and some newspaper.

With a long, thin bladed knife, cut out the top of the pumpkin a few inches out from the stem. The hole should be large enough to allow you to scoop out the guts (seeds and stringy membrane) by hand and with a large spoon. Generally, the size of the hole should be about two-thirds the diameter of the pumpkin. While you can cut a round circle out, you'll find that cutting a five or six-sided opening will work the best. As you cut out the top hole, angle the knife so that the lid and hole will be somewhat cone shaped. This will help prevent the lid from falling into the hole. Now use the spoon to scrap the inside walls clean.

Inspect the surface of the pumpkin to decide the best side to carve your face. Now, visualising the face you want to carve, use your knife to carefully cut out the individual parts of the face or you can pre-mark the pumpkin by using a crayon to draw the face onto the surface of the pumpkin and cut through the lines you drew. When you are finished cutting, carefully push out the pieces to view the final results. Make sure that you have scraped the bottom of the pumpkin flat, so that the

candle will sit level in the pumpkin. A Votive candle, placed in a clear glass candleholder is safer and will actually last quite long. Also, plain white candles give off the most light and will illuminate the inside of your Jack-O'-Lantern the best.

S

hocking as it may seem, we have already started to think about creating labels for Christmas card envelopes with our clients and have decided to run a workshop on the 7th November at 9.30-11.30 in Chaldon for £25 per person on how to accomplish this task using Excel and Word. There are only 5 places so if this is of interest, please give us a call. I want to also talk about BACKING UP in this issue, partly because someone who is now a client, recently noticed his system slowing down and rather than doing anything about it immediately due to pressures at home he also did not make time to back up. His system suddenly failed. Although we can, in some cases recover data from a hard drive by removing it and attaching it to another machine, in this case it was impossible because malware had corrupted the

from Keystroke Associates drive. He lost legal papers and all of his photos of a recent trip to South America as well as everything else. Please, p l e a s e BACK UP. You can use a Seagate Expansion Drive and set the back to automatically run every month or use Memory sticks and manually back up. It’s not a job that should be left to chance. Our Man In Havana by Graham Greene adapted for the stage by Clive Francis 28th, 29th and 30th November at 8pm The Riddell Hall, Walton on the Hill. Jim Wormold, an under-employed vacuum cleaner salesman living in 1950s Cuba, is struggling to pay for his teenage daughter’s increasingly extravagant lifestyle. So when the British Secret Service asks him to become their ‘man in Havana’ he can’t afford to say no. There’s just one problem . . . he doesn’t know anything! To avoid suspicion, he begins to recruit non-existent sub-agents, concocting a series of intricate fictions about them. But he soon discovers that his stories are closer to the truth than he could ever have imagined . . . in a darkly comic tale, how will ‘our man’ come out on top?
