Men, Learn to Sing!

music national education charity is providing an opportunity for local men to become singers with a free six-week course starting on 1 October. The North Surrey Barbershop Harmony Club, more popularly known as The Downsmen, will be hosting the Wednesday evening sessions at the Methodist Church Hall in Leatherhead. The Downsmen perform locally at fairs, for charity fundraisers and even in national competitions. Its members give different reasons for joining saying: they thought they couldn’t sing; they last sang at school; or that their partners thought they should get out more! Learning to sing barbershop is both a challenge and a reward. Songs need to be learnt by heart which is good for keeping the mind active. Breathing is improved by pulling in air from the lower lungs.

10

Singing as a group increases awareness of those around you. And it also helps chaps that are shy by surrounding them with a team of supportive guys. The Downsmen consists of men from around north Surrey, especially Sutton, Epsom and Leatherhead. aged from 3080! For people who can’t read music they have ‘teach tracks’ that can be downloaded and listened to. They sing ‘a cappella’ and there are four different voice parts: leads, who carry the tune, and tenors, basses and baritones who create the harmony. The group’s experienced musical director Lisa chooses the tunes, teaches good practice and helps develop individual members to sing and present to their best ability. For more information, please call Allan Scott on 020 8642 8104 or David Tidd on 01372 723 206, www.downsmen.co.uk

Make Your Chimney safe this Autumn

Advice from the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) on maintaining a safe chimney. Concludes next issue

UK fire statistics show that each year on average over 30 thousands houses have chimney fires. This will be largely due to not getting the chimney swept often enough or burning fuel that is inappropriate for the appliance and causing tar to build up in the chimney. Most insurance companies will no longer pay out for claims made due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a professional chimney sweep and a valid certificate of sweeping issued that is recognised by insurance companies. If the fire brigade is called out to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been properly maintained, then the local council can bill you for the call out, which can be expensive! Chimney fires can not only destroy homes but also endanger the occupiers of the dwelling. Slow-burning chimney fires don't get enough air or have enough fuel to be as dramatic or visible as their more spectacular cousins. The temperatures they reach are very high and can cause damage to the chimney structure and nearby combustible parts of the house. Use only recommended fuels for your appliance and flue type (if you are unsure check your manufactures instructions, ask your stove supplier, or a NACS Chimney Sweep).

22

Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires. Chimney Sweeping will also help to increase the efficiency of appliances. The frequency of Chimney Sweeping will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel used, appliance, duration of use, moisture content of wood fuel, and the type of chimney you have. Your local NACS Chimney Sweep will be able to advise on the sweeping frequency during the appointment. The sweeping frequencies below are for guidance purposes only:• Smokeless Fuel: At least once a year • Wood: Quarterly when in use • Bituminous Coal: Quarterly when in use • Oil: Once per year • Gas: Once per year Part 2 follows in October and explains what to consider when choosing a chimney sweep. Get Fit For Life!

E

Personal trainer Jade Parsons on how to build muscle safely

veryone needs to be strong but that does not mean you are going to be big. Male and females are different so don’t get worried about looking like something you’re not. Yes having large muscles are not for everyone, having large muscles does not always mean you are stronger. Hypertrophy is the enlargement of an organ or tissue from the increase in size of its cells. This is the word used for putting on muscle. Your need to increase the volume of work for hypertrophy to happen and change the movements you do. It needs to be in a controlled way and you should be feeling tension in the area. The exercise should not take too long and there should be more rest time in between sets of the exercise. When training try to concentrate on an area or two, doing a body part split works really well. This could be done by doing just your arms; for that day of training, which would be biceps and triceps exercises. We don’t want to ever over do it when training for size, so never feel you have only managed half a repetition of something. This means you have probably done to much. Every set needs to be hard, very hard in fact. This way you will reach your potential. Don’t just think about that one area you wish to increase, it’s about training all over your body, its all linked. Basic movements for a main area will work

32

others hard as well. You'll see maximum benefits when you do give all muscle groups equal attention through out your weekly routine. To add quality muscle weight to your body, you need to have more calories than normal. These are not just any calories, so forget biscuits, coke and bread rolls as they won’t help. You need protein; you need enough to help you support the growth of bigger muscles. Make sure that you're eating clean and healthy, and you are not eating too much. Drinking water and lots of it is the key to success! Your body needs a good amount of water to help build muscle. Rest. Rest. REST! If you are not taking time to rest, how will your body be able to recover? You need to est the muscles you have used from training hard, so they are able to rebuild and come back even stronger. You shouldn’t be training for longer than 45 minutes to an 1-hour at max. If you work hard throughout the 45 minutes there should be know need to carry on. Remember not to over train, which for some people is difficult because it becomes a quick fix and addictive. Over exercising or over training is the same as over working, everyone needs rest at times! The trick is to get plenty of sleep at night, eat well and then you can train correctly. Getting the most from your tablet

pads and Tablets have become very popular over the last couple of years and the very interesting aspect of them is that many people are not aware of the microphone dictating facility they hold. For non-typists out there, it is an absolute saviour. When your in email simply press the microphone symbol – speak, it will listen AND translate every word you say. We used to have something called Dragon Naturally speaking for the PC – well forget that, use the inbuilt facility for free! One client asked recently ‘Do I have a Spanish keyboard that I can use for my Spanish homework?’ I learnt something that day. By going to keyboards in settings and then general you can create a new keyboard for any language and then use the world

symbol to switch between the two or more keyboards – amazing! Taking Photos with your ipad and sending them to people is so much easier than attaching or using drop box and so quick. Downloading your pictures from your camera to your ipad is also quick and easy with a wonderful little accessory called ‘Apple ipad Camera Connection kit’ currently retailing at £25 on their site. Makes downloading a doddle. If you would like to know more about the power of ipads and tablets then just give Keystroke Associates a call and we will be glad to help. Call Judy 01883 346 516.
