Pack Up and Go! Travel light this Summer by following Connection’s guide to packing the ultimate capsule wardrobe

veryone’s heard of a capsule wardrobe – that elusive chic and stylish holiday attire that fits in your handbag if you get it just right. You know the kind – colourful kaftans; little black dresses that are beach wraps by day and smouldering man-magnets by night: versatile thongs (we’re talking feet) and a push-up bikini that doubles as a peek-a-boo bra over evening drinks. If you’re not careful the capsule wardrobe can prove just as elusive as that perfect beach-babe body (tell me you didn’t embark on the cabbage and lentil detox diet pre-hols. However, there is something to be said for packing creatively, and eliminating post-vacation ironing piles, to say nothing of hefty excess luggage fines. A few hints, therefore wouldn’t go amiss... The first thing to do is to lay out everything you think you need. Get rid of half. You don’t need it. Honest. Then think about what you’re going to be doing. Chilling on the beach, shopping, sightseeing, cafe lunches, romantic dinners... Start to think about what you’ll wear for each occasion. This is where ‘capsule’ comes in – key items that work in lots of settings. Choose a core colour that will team up with neutral basics – blacks, whites and beiges (great with a tan), and keep fabrics plain, so you can jazz

6

them up with chunky jewellery, a wide belt or a colourful scarf. Here are some summertime basics that will stand you in good stead. Elegant white linen trousers. Light and cool in hot sunshine, but easily dressed up with a bit of bling and heels. Go for a wide-legged style. Summer dress. Great for both daytime and evening wear, and easily dressed up or down with accessories. Choose a cotton jersey or crinkly viscose so you can wear it straight from your case. Versatile skirt. Can be teemed with t-shirts or slinky camisoles, and is more stylish than shorts. Crop trousers. A fashion essential Cotton t-shirts. Two or three plain t-shirts in your core colours will team up with all your basics. If you like, swap one with a camisole or floaty top. Summer cardigan. A slinky wrap-around or v-neck cardie looks great over a dress or vest top when the temperature starts to drop. Swimsuit and sarong. Go for a classic one-piece and a bikini. They’re small enough to pack two! Embellished strappy sandals. You can get away with these on the beach, and on nights out. Throw in a pair of wedge sandals for added chic. Oops... better stop now. We’re meant to be thinking ‘capsule’!

Get Fit For Life!

Personal trainer Jade Parsons on why you must always combine exercise with good nutrition to achieve your fitness goals

W

hen you put exercise and nutrition together then you are likely to see the best results from your body. If you’re just eating the healthy things for your body, then yes you will lose some weight but that won’t be the to help you look better. If your goal is losing weight, find the most realistic way for you and your lifestyle and make sure you combine exercise with it. The food you eat depends on the amount of weight loss you will achieve, but the amount of exercise you do will be what makes you look and feel good. The exercise must suit you, your lifestyle and what you’re eating. Your behaviour and the way you look at life will be the real turning point for whether you achieve your chosen goal, or not. For the nutrition side of things, think about trying to do a food dairy. This means you will become accountable for everything you eat and are less likely to eat as much “of the bad stuff”! It’s a very useful method for helping you cut back on the things our body actually doesn’t need. It will make you aware of what you are eating during the day, and if it is at the right times of the day. Timing is important, the early you eat, and the early your body will start working. The later you eat, the less likely it is your body is able to do anything with the food. This is because our bodies will be tired and just store

14

food instead, as it needs its rest! You might find looking at your food dairy after a few days, that all you are lacking is a few vital things, like dairies; white meat and vegetables. In which in the long run, this makes you crave other foods, which could be high in fat or sugar. The average person should be having about 4-5 servings of vegetables a day, and 3-4 servings of meat and fish a day. People usually are not eating enough vegetables and they are a very important sources nutrients and vitamins. While sorting out your nutrition you must take into account factors like your lifestyle, age, occupation and amount of exercise you are getting. This all has in impact on what we eat and how much we need of it. Your body will get used to your new eating patterns and will cope with the changes well. On to exercise. You must try to introduce both cardiovascular exercises and some sort of resistance-based |exercise, or weight training like a weighted deadlift or weighted squat. If you include some resistance training everyday, it will help to tighten and firm the muscles of your body, and maintain weight loss. This will of course, increase your over all fitness. This will help your body internally and externally. Exercise is one of the best ways to remain as young as you can and feel good at the same time. Legal Matters

Solicitor Nicola Dudley talks through making provision for children in your Will

f you are making your Will and have children you should be thinking about who you would want to look after them and at what age you would want them to be able to spend their inheritance without anyone making decisions for them. Executors Your Executors are responsible for carrying out the terms of your Will and will collect in your assets, discharge any liabilities and tax and pay any legacies. What is left will be held by them as Trustees for your children (or other beneficiaries). The Trustees are usually the same people as your Executors, although they do not need to be. Guardians These are the people who will make decisions concerning your children who are under 18. You can choose as many Guardians as you wish, although you should consider the practicalities of more than two Guardians. It is a good idea to have different Executors to Guardians as the Guardians will be looking after the children on a day to day basis and will be aware of their needs whilst the Executors can make more detached decisions concerning the application of the funds that they are holding on their behalf. Inheritance Tax (IHT) on their Inheritance Whether there is additional IHT to pay will depend on the age that you choose for your children to inherit. Up until the age that you choose your Trustees will decide how to use the funds for them. If you choose 18 years there will be no additional IHT charges other than the usual charges which occur upon death. If you choose an age between 18 and 25, when payment is made and when the children inherit absolutely there can be exit charges up to a maximum of 4.2% of the value above the nil rate band (currently £325,000) at that time. If funds are left in

22

trust for children beyond the age of 25 there can be additional IHT charges such as 10year anniversary charges and exit charges up to a maximum of 6% of the excess. However, there are ways in which you can mitigate ongoing charges to IHT on a children’s fund, which will also protect the fund should your child become bankrupt, divorce or die. If you think that 18 is too young to inherit a large amount of money then you should consider the tax implications of inheriting at a later age or providing for your estate to be held on a more flexible trust, which may save ongoing IHT charges on your children’s inheritance. Next steps? Disabled Fitness Instructor Scheme Returns To Surrey uilding upon the success of the disabled people who became fitness instructors last year, the multi award winning InstructAbility programme returns to Guildford, to offer disabled people a FREE opportunity to become qualified fitness instructors, with a course starting in July at Surrey Sports Park. Since InstructAbility launched in 2011, one hundred people, with a wide range of impairments, including wheelchair users, have qualified as gym instructors. Many of the instructors are part way through the programme, progressing to the Level 3 Exercise and Disability qualification and undertaking industry work placements. Those who have graduated have contributed to more than 10,000 hours of voluntary service in over forty different leisure facilities across London and the South East. Not only are they supporting other disabled people to get active but as much as fifty percent of graduates have also gained employment. Sam James, 34 years old from Swindon, joined the Surrey based InstructAbility programme last year and has been in demand as a fitness professional ever since. Sam, who has cerebral palsy has been employed by Swindon and Wiltshire Borough Councils to deliver exercise sessions and assist the health improvement team. After going on to qualify as a Zumba and Boxercise instructor Sam is also now employed as a school physical disabilities outreach worker.

28

Sam said, “I wanted to help other people to use the gym and show them that it can help them to manage their conditions and prevent them from getting worse. I love teaching disabled people Zumba as the fun music always gets everyone moving. It is amazing to do something I love as a career.” Another success story of the InstructAbility programme is that of father of four, Richard Claridge, who is registered blind. Despite being an international goalball player, Richard struggled to gain employment but has now been offered work at the Arena Leisure Centre in Surrey. Arena Operation Manager, Jonny Gosnell, said, “Richard is clearly an excellent fitness instructor and really has great knowledge. Richard has worked very closely with the sales team with community outreach to encourage participation of those that wouldn't usually use the gym. Richard’s knowledge and caring approach has helped members of the local community feel comfortable with coming to use the facilities at the Arena Leisure Centre.” The FREE programme, funded by Sport England is open to unemployed, disabled people who are over sixteen years old and have some gym user experience. You can apply online at www.aspire.org.uk. Call: 07917 822977 or Email: instructability@aspire.org.uk for further information.

Computer Tips

A

from Keystroke Associates

Don’t forget to back up this summer!

s we start to think about our summer holidays we should also be thinking about making sure our systems are backed up before we go away in the event of any issues on our return. While we are thinking of backing up we could take the opportunity to perform a clean up too. Your system creates logs, backups and other data dumps in the background continually. These temporary files should be automatically deleted, but sometimes events conspire to cause them to hang around. If the pc crashes mid operation for e.g. each file has to be read and catalogued so over time as they accumulate they will degrade a computers performance, a clean up gets rid of them. A routine called disc cleanup is a useful tool to use and this can be obtained from the

start menu, Computer, right click, select properties and click disc cleanup. You also have the ability to defragment your disc This rewrites all your files, which might have become scattered across many different sectors on the disk and group them together by type to improve performance. A bit like cleaning the tin cupboard out and finding suddenly you have more space.

If you would like help on any of these tidying up routines to keep your computer humming then please call Keystroke associates on 01883 346 516.

Reach your target customer every month from as little as ÂŁ25 per issue.
